Updates loop, SFC won't run, SURT doesn't work, Can't System Restore

Q: Updates loop, SFC won't run, SURT doesn't work, Can't System Restore

How's that for a Topic?

I first noticed the problem while trying to install QuickBooks.
It complained about the .NET framework.
When I went to Add/Remove Windows components, it was blank.
I googled and studied more.
I tried SFC /scan now. "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."
Notice Application log is full of 1001 - Windows Error reporting with the following:
WindowsWcpOtherFailure3Not available06.1.7601base\wcp\componentstore\storelayout.cpp

SURT appears to install, but really doesn't run.
There are more symptoms, but that's enough for starters.

CBS logs attached.

I appreciate any help you can offer.

I recommend trying the free service from Zip Cloud. It's currently our users' favorite backup and storage solution and will save you headaches down the line.

You can get it direct from this link http://goo.gl/rFYDxc. (This link will open the Zip Cloud homepage.)

A: Updates loop, SFC won't run, SURT doesn't work, Can't System Restore

The CheckSUR reports this...

Code:
Checking Packages

This means that there is a major problem with your registry.

I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

So about a day ago my desktop began displaying the blue screen upon login and then instant restart. I tried startup repair, memory diagnostics tool, system recovery, nothing worked. so i cleared everything on my drive (unforunately) only to find once i got to "set up is preparing your computer for first use" an error message saying something along the lines of "the installation has unexpectedly restarted, please restart to install windows". Everytime i restart, its the same thing. I really have no idea where to go from here and would seriously appreciate help!

Sounds like a hardware issue can you boot into safe mode (F8)?

If you can get into safe mode go to the system control panel and uncheck auto reboot.

I have a 4y old Sony VAIO (VGN-NS11J) that stopped working today morning after making a whirring noise

Repeated attempts to restart failed and after many attempts, I managed to get to the Startup Repair mode - after a long time, startup repair says it failed to automatically repair the problem

I managed to run system restore but after a while I got the following message: "System restore failed due to an unspecified error. The disk strucgture is corrupted and unreadable (0X80070571)

My laptop did not come with a Windows Vista CD/Recovery disk

My first priority is to recover a few files in the laptop - if I am able to do this, then I dont mind junking the laptop

Since this is an old laptop, I would prefer not to use an expensive professional to recover the data

Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated!

Rgds

Hi, my name is Stormy, I'm new to this forum since I really haven't had any issues in the past.

I am running Vista Home Premium 32bit on my desktop. I restarted it a few days ago to install SP1, it rebooted and started installing 3 updates. Once it reached 100% it kicked into System Repair. After running through it, it restarted and did the same thing. Now 3 days later, it's still in that process where it installs updates, goes to system repair, restarts and starts again.

I tried interrupting it and doing a System Restore, but even at the earliest date on it, it goes right back to that repetitive process. Now I can't get to any of my files or anything else on there. I'm stuck, and I need some help please!

My Win 7 was installed in February 2010 and at first I could use System Restore without problems. However, after some time it stopped working due to unknown reasons and now when I try to do a System Restore it looks as if it is going to be OK, but when it restarts I see the following error message:

Quote:
System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details:

System Restore failed while mounting the registry from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x800703f1)

You can try System Restore again and choose a different restore point. If you continue to see this error, you can try advanced recovery method. For more information, see What is Recovery?

I tried to fix it by doing the following things:

1) Perform SFC /SCANNOW

it returns the following message:

Quote:
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of th
em.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example

and nothing gets better regarding System Restore.

2) Do System Restore from Safe Mode:

I run XP in a Dell Inspiron with Norton AntiVirus. I tried System Restore a week ago, but it didn't work. It ran but at the end I got the error message that it didn't complete and couldn't restore to the earlier point. It displayed the red "X." I deleted all of the restore points and set the amount of store to the maximum and set a new restore point. Still it didn't complete. I also ran Malwarebytes - it couldn't find any issues.

I tried it in Safe Mode and it worked - it set the new point and renamed three files - two of them were Norton files, the third I didn't recognize. I set a new point and again it DID NOT COMPLETE - I got the same error message!!

Sorry for the long message, but I wanted you to know I already tried some troubleshooting. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi everyone, this is my first post so please be gentle if I break protocol or seem stupid or something. >_> <_<

Anyway, I'm having a really frustrating problem...I tried uninstalling a program with Windows Install Cleanup, but it didn't get all the files apparently - it was still showing up in the start menu and Programs and Features. Well, I thought, no big deal, I'll just do a system restore to before I installed it (I was trying the program out and I didn't like it, so it was only a couple days ago) but now I've run into a bigger problem...

I try to do system restore, and it seems to go fine, but when the computer reboots it tells me:

"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details:

System Restore failed to extract the file (C:\ProgramData\Trusteer\Rapport\store) from the restore point.
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x80070005)"

I've tried 3 different restore points and keep getting this same message, although sometimes the file it can't extract is C:\ProgramData\Trusteer\Rapport\store\app-config.cfg

Please help! I don't know what to do now. The program's "ghost" is still on my computer, but that's not nearly as worrisome as the inability to system restore at this point. What should I do?

A:System Restore Doesn't Work?

Hello,

To fix this problem you should downloaded Rapport again directly from here:
http://download.trusteer.com/Gcur4Wtnu/RapportSetup.exe
Or from our website www.trusteer.com

Once you have installed and restarted the computer the System restore should work.

Good day,
I went to do a backup after last W7 update. The external SATA drive was not recognized. Found it inactive and without a drive letter and set them. Unit works on other computers with a USB. Ran a sfc /scannow with errors that couldn't be corrected. Attempted a restore which after reboot fails. Did a system image restore to a preupdate version (Paragon), apparently successfully. sfc still shows errors.
I am asking if I should go directly to the update section and do the MS download and gather the CBS.log?
Oh an of course lost the registration for the W10 download.
Thanks for pointing me in a correct direction!

In trying to solve a problem I've been having with VPN (I think? see post here), I've tried to use System Restore in order to go back to a working configuration. Problem is, for some reason, System Restore refuses to restore my system. Is system restore turned ON and configured?

System restore sometimes has problems with proprietary chipset drivers; ie drivers written for a big box system.

FWIW system restore is pretty useless; a MUCH better option is to make an image backup of your system drive. With the price of hard drives so cheap AND the image software being free, there is no reason to not have an image backup.

In early January, I made a post about a restore problem. Thought that it was cleared up. I am unable to acess any of my or XP's restore points. When I went to restore to an earlier date. All appeared to be going as it should. However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. Any help would be greatly appreciated? Is there a utility to use to check and see if there is something corrupted? If I need an HJT Log let me know and I'll repost.

I noticed about a week ago that my system won't go to sleep unless I force it to sleep using the using the Function and F1 buttons on the keyboard. I also noticed about the same time that I tried to set it to use the ribbon screen saver and that doesn't work either. The screen saver looks fine in preview but it won't start up on it's own.

I tried working through the "Vista sleep problems" tutorial that was posted in a previous thread but none of that helped. I also tried doing a system restore several times and each time I get a window telling me that "system restore did not complete successfully becasue system restore couldn't access a file, probably due to anti-virus software. An unspecified error occured during system restore 0x80070005." I've tried disabling Norton Anti Virus and running system restore -- same result.

The rest of my system seems to be running fine and I really don't want to get into advanced recovery methods or doing a full restore of Windows if I don't have to. I don't know if this would matter but I did install a second internal HDD. It's not in any kind of RAID configuration or anything. I use it to capture/store video footage and I keep backup copies of several personal folders on it. I think sleep was working for a time after I installed the second drive.

Any advice to get sleep to function again? Thanks.

Thanks.

A:Win7 HP 64b system restore doesn't work

Hello Toadstoll Welcome to the Seven Forums!

Would this be on a custom build where you installed Windows yourself or on an OEM premade system?

The most likely problem you ran into was a bad restore point. That can happen on occasion when you only have one or two depending the time of the month and seeing the older ones automatically being cleaned up.

Every so often a bad point is created where choosing the next older if found would be the next step. That would be the first suggestion to start with by opening the restore option again to see how many points are still seen to try another to go back a little further to see if that goes well on the next try.

Other things like running the System File Checker tool can help with minor problems. But if you are stuck trying to remove a new program tracking down entries in the system registry can be tricky at times for seeing it manually removed.

So I went back 2 days and tried it - same result. Back 3 days same result.

The error msg gave no explanation other than it could not restore my computer.

I don't use restore that much but it makes me kinda nervous knowing it doesn't work.

Thanks for your help.

But when I open them up it also talks about the repair, a "Windows Installer" box pops up, then disappears, afterwards telling me to reinstall\repair Word 10.0 or something like that because there's an error in Microsoft Office. Should I reinstall\repair my Microsoft Office CDs?

Hi all
I wanted to do a system restore but it didn't work.
My computer has two hard drives, C:\ and D:\ and a CD drive E:\, I also plug a portable hard drive into it from time to time that shows up as F:\.
So I try to run system restore and it brings up a warning that it will not be able to change anything on F: because it is no longer available (I think that was the massage, something like that anyway), okay it was not plugged into the computer so I click to go ahead with the restore. The computer looks like it's doing its restore thing, tha bar graph runs and all but when it should be finished it tells me nothing was changed so pick an earlier restore dat and try again so I did that, same F: drive warning, same results. I plug the portable disk in and try again, same thing.
How can I get the System Restore to work???

Thanks in advance

A:System Restore Doesn't Work. Is It A Virus?

Hello Cross,Because you have an HJT log posted, as you stated above, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. If after ten days you still have received no response, then post a link to your HJT log in the th... Hello,

I'm doing everything as said, and the "previous versions" doesn't work. Why?
I also did manually a system restore, and it doesn't create a copy of files (for previous versions).
What can I do?

Thank you,
Patrick

Try Shadow Explorer, The link says Vista but it works for Windows 7 as well. You may find your file that way.

New Acer Aspire, but I pitched the box, so can't return it. Anyway, It initially worked fine for about a week, including Windows Update. Got to a point where every window would say (Not Responding) and resources were maxed out. I couldn't isolate the problem and didn't have any valuable info on the laptop yet. So I did a complete System Restore back to OEM spec.
I tether to my cellphone for internet. So I installed drivers and Access Manager for that. I go into Windows Update and click to check for updates. It runs for about 20 seconds then disconnects from the internet and pops up an error code. I've gone through all the steps that can be run down there.
SP1 is not installed yet.
I'm at a loss here and need help, I'm not tech/nerd savvy, but I'm not computer shy either.

A:vista system restore doesn't work, any clues how to fix this?

I don't know much about this, but it appears that it's either turned off - or that you haven't given it any space to store the restore points in.

Don't have a copy of Vista handy right now, but I think if you go to Start and type in "sysdm.cpl" (without the quotes) and then press Enter. That'll open a window with tabs across the top. Select the System Protection tab and see if you can start/allocate space from there.

Hi there. Recently I restored my computer. I was able to get almost everything back to working order except for the sound which refuses to work. Using Everest, I was able to find out that my audio adapter is Intel 82801EB ICH5 - AC'97 audio controller and my motherboard name is Intel La Crosse D865GLC. I tried downloading this driver: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...ional&lang=eng but every time that I try to install it it says "Driver not found! Reboot your system, and run this setup again." I rebooted my system but when I tried to run the setup again, I got the same error. Any help with this issue would be appreciated.

A:[SOLVED] Sound doesn't work after system restore

Why did you run the System Restore? Some malware pretends to be drivers in order to protect itself from detection & deletion.

Hiya, all!

Auto Run and Auto Play just quit working. I did the basic, went to the drives concerned, the Auto Play is enabled, looks like.

The msconfig option is out of my expertize level. Would someone know what happened, and how I can get those options working again?

BTW, the System Restore quit working, too. I tried to roll back to a good working setting, but SR didn't restore. I tried several times, different dates. It only went back to July, anyway.

I'm not sure if those two problems are related.

My machine is Dell XPS, P4 3.4Ghz, 3 gigs of RAM, XP Pro SP3.

i have the problem update problem with the reboot loop on my vista, if you do not know what it is, whenever i start
my computer, it says it is cofiguring update 3 of 3 0% until it reboots and the whole thing continously happens.
the computer does work in safe mode though, and as i read in other forums, to get rid of the reboot loop i have to
to a system restore, either in safe mode or using the vista cd. since vista was preinstalled on my pc i tried the system
restore option, and whichever system restore point i select, it tells me that "system restore failed due to an unspecified error. the parameter is incorrect. (0x80070057) ...when i normally start system restore it also tells me i cannot carry it out in offline mode and i have to type a special
command to reach system restore, but i do not think it makes a difference. tell me if you need to know any additional information and please give me a step to step guide if you have a solution, i am not very experienced with computers. THANKS A LOT in advance, i really need your help guys!!!

Hi everyone. A few days ago I downloaded something that caused pop-ups, redirects and double tabs to open in my Google Chrome (even though the setting was set to only open ONE tab).

Malwarebytes found 83 malware files (at once) on my system and I cleared it out which removed the pop-ups and redirects, but I found I System Restore isn't working and I can't access the wizard. When I try, it says: SYSTEM RESTORE IS NOT ABLE TO PROTECT YOUR COMPUTER. PLEASE RESTART YOUR COMPUTER, AND THEN RUN SYSTEM RESTORE AGAIN.

However, restarting it and trying again gives you the same results.

I then used the patch #278 sysrestoreenable.reg from Kelly's Corner and it 'installed' but still, System Restore doesn't work.

Another site said that this is evidence I might still have malware that neither Malwarebytes or Ad-aware have been able to detect. Can someone look at the logs and see if there is something I should be concerned about? I couldn't find anything, but I could really use some experienced eyes taking a look.

1: I backed everything up.
2: XP Firewall is and has been on.
3: I downloaded and ran DDS and made logs of programs running (attached).
4: I made a Hijackthis log too (also attached)
My apologies if I did this request incorrectly.
Thank you in advance for your time.

Hi everyone,I believe I got a virus/rootkit/malware on my HP 620 Business Notebook with Windows 7...and now after a couple days of trying to fix it, I cannot even do a system restore with my restore disks. I am going to describe as much as I can about this and hopefully someone has some advice on how to fix my computer, if possible. Things started gong bad when I clicked on a gif image on an discussion board and it loaded halfway and then stalled. My computer seemed to be running slow since then, but it was still functional. It seemed to get slower though.I would click to open a folder and it would take a couple minutes to open and load completely.I also want to mention a few things about my computer that may be relevant:Computer is fairly new, bought it new and only owned it for a little more than a monthVisual Studio 2008 Pro was installedThe computer was dropped( fell about a foot and a half onto the ground)I had a File Shredder program and used that program a couple timesSo since my computer was going slow I tried to open Disk Defrag, but when I clicked the icon, it wouldn't open. (I disconnected from the internet from this point on)After trying that, I booted in Safe Mode and tried it, and Disk Defrag still wouldn't work.I tried Disk Cleanup and that did work (although it was very slow in opening)While Disk Cleanup was working, another pop up came up and said "This program is damaged" (the program it was referring to was Outlook, which I never ...
