Adding a storage array to HP Proliant dl380 g6

Q: Adding a storage array to HP Proliant dl380 g6

Hello everyone,

We are currently using a HP Proliant DL380 G6 that has an array consisting of 8x72GB SAS drives. I am looking to add a second array to this machine. I have done some research but haven't found much on the topic. I am beginning to wonder if this is even at all possible.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thank you,

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have a brand new Proliant 380DL G3 out of the box. Raid 5 configuration. I can't get the Hard drive to recognize the 680 Gigs I have. Recongizes 4 gig. Deleted array and rebuilt same thing. What am I doing wrong. Configured right out of the box on previous and it recogized it all.
Used SmartStart 6.40 on first try. 2nd try Used F8, delete the array, added logical drive. Logical drive appears as 682 gig but C drive is 4 gig.

I have done this before and never had this issue....

Hello nice forum you guys have here

Here is something i just got on EBAY!

I wish to install Windows 2003 server on this system. So far I have

Used the SmartStartCD 5.5 and installed the BIOS.
I have set up the raid0 array and i have created a logical drive.
I have chaged the boot order in the newly installed BIOS to go to CD first.

When i place my Win 2K3 server cd in the drive i get a non system disk error
I can place the same disc in my XP home machine and i get no trouble booting. The smartstartcd boots fine.

Why is the windows CD not booting?

Thanks for taking time reading my post

Dear All, We have HP Proliant DL380 G6 Server with only one 460w power supply, I am new IT guy and I thinkg this server runs on limits. I want to upgrade power supply to 2x1200w or at least 2x750w. I ask for spare parts and firm providing power supply told me that if 460w installed we should buy 460w 750w or 1200w won't work. Is that true or not ? Regards.

I have an HP Server dl380 G10, it was working fine for several months, but suddenly it started to shut down by itself at random times, with all the leds flashing for three times which means memory power fault as by the documentation, when starting over the server and running all diagnostics for the memory and HDD they all are passed, stress test is passed for 48 hours, but the server still crashes at random time, from the iLO 5 the reported error is under BIOS/HARDWARE HEALTH which is always green and OK unless when the server is crashed it gives the System Error:

Server Critical Fault (Service Information: Runtime Fault, Memory, Processor 2 Memory Channels 1-3 (04h))

I have only one Memory DDR4 size 16GB located on Processor 1 DIMM 8

I have only one processor (Processor 1)

The fault message says processor 2 channels 1-3 and those are all empty.

Searched a lot but no help,

I would appreciate any help or idea about this issue.

Thanks in advance.

I currently have win7 x64 installed, i have a 320GB partitioned for a dual boot, XP and win7, then i have a 1.5TB storage drive which is filling up, im thinking of getting 2 or 3 1TB drives to create a raid array(0 or 5, not sure whether to have fault tollerance or not).

if i were to start with 2 drives (no parity) could i add another to the array later and could i then include partiy at a later date?

A:Setting up a RAID storage array

This depends on your RAID array and it's capabilities. I was able to do it with my RAID cards (Highpoint) - but you'll have to check the documentation/FAQ's for your RAID controller.

FWIW - I switched RAID controllers when I installed the 7 RTM - and lost everything off my RAID 5 array (luckily I thought this might happen, so I backed everything up).

i have a wd 120 hd need more drive space for digital editing bought HITACHI 2x250 for a striped array. how do I add these so i have one drive for os and raid for video storage?

A:adding a striped array

Basically your going to have to make a raid array via your motherboad manufatures requirments.....See the manual....

When you create the array it combines the two drives into one technically, so your going to get 1 drive equal to 500GB

So your going to have to partition this drive into 2. Probably allocating about 100 gig for Windows and the other 400 for storage.

This can all be done when you freshly reinstall XP. Just follow the directions

We have an older HP Proliant ML350 G4 server that someone installed a custom program directly to C:

They did not utilize an Array controller.

It is running Windows 2003 server with one logical & primary disc.

My question is, can I now add an Array Controller, configure an array with the currently unused hard drives, and then move with Partition Magic or similar the server to the array?

It doesn't seem possible, but because of a VERY strange application on the server it would save me time.

I believe I lost my boot drive. My computer hangs when it can't find SATA4 in BIOS. I tried switching cables, but it did not help. I have 4 drives in a storage spaces array and a single boot drive. The computer is older, so I am thinking about pulling the 4 drive array and putting it in a mediasonic 4 bay box. I would attach it via usb to a windows 8 laptop. I only use the array for media storage.

Will the laptop see the array correctly in the usb box?

A:Boot Drive Failure with storage spaces array

So I went ahead and bought the mediasonic 4 bay box. I put in the 4 drives from the array and they showed up without any problems on my windows 8 laptop. They are linked by USB, but still show up as a regular hard drive.

First of all, thanks for the read, like the forum, tons of info here. Second, I tried to search and find my problem here, and just didn't see a thread that fits what I see... lots of problems, but so far nothing matches me. Finally, seems to be some very savvy PC guys here, so hopefully you can help.

background: Last year sometime, my install and all that went flawless, I put win7 64 bit pro on a fresh drive, let it format and install as it wanted, zero problems. Boot drive was alone in the PC, its a WD black 320, I dont have the model or part number in front of me, but it seems to be a solid drive. The PC is a built clone, using Asus mobo and AMD dual core, spec's are in my profile if anyone needs to look that up, basically I don't see any of that mattering in my problem but there you go.

problem: added a promise RAID card last night, using an existing array from a previous build, and the system worked great and booted great once. I thought I was home free, but rebooted just to check since I have so little faith in PC's until they work twice, and sure enough I get hung at the glowing windows screen if this card is installed

I have read all I can here on this, and have been thru much troubleshooting... BIOS is fine, boot drive reads fine... the card and its fast track utility see the array fine... all those drives recognize just fine... the problem as I think today is, with the new array in place, windows can't figure out where to boot.

The old array was bootable year... Read more

Just wanted to post this to the internet since there are literally no other posts about this exact scenario, which I could see others running into. Short story - I lost 2 drives in a 4-drive parity array.

I had a shotty storage spaces array in my home desktop comprising of 2x2TB WD Green drives, 1x2.5TB Seagate Green, and a 2TB WD Red in a Storage Spaces array. A small mirror volume spreading all 4 drives was created first, which would host my critical files (this array never failed, by design), and a parity array that filled the remaining capacity, which also spread across 4 drives. I ran in this configuration for over a year before experiencing hardware failures.

First off - Never run green drives. I don't care your reasons for wanting to buy them or receive them for free (sell them if you do), but I've lost several dozen green drives over the last few years. They will fail! They're bottom bin drives that didn't make the cut.

I upgraded my computer case (Cooler Master's HAF XB Evo Lan Box is incredible and worth every penny), and while doing so, accidentally dropped two powered-off green drives about 3" onto a soft surface. I can only deduce that this is what caused the drives that worked pre-case-upgrade to fail. Upon booting the system back up, Storage Spaces started throwing notification errors at me that 1 drives was missing. So I hopped into powershell and ran get-physicaldisk, and one of the drives wasn't showing up in the list. After some quick troubleshooti... Read more

I've posted on the problem I'm having with my Storage Space (set to file 2-way duplication) before.  I know I'm going to lose some files.  I removed one drive to reformat it to a larger clustersize and, while the array was repairing itself, I lost
a 1TB drive that will no longer connect.

I've "Removed" the drive and gotten the error "Can't remove the drive from the pool" because "...not all the data could be reallocated.  Add an additional drive.."

I already can't re-add the old 4TB drive (even though I've done nothing to it) because Storage Spaces says it's now an "unrecognized configuration".  At least a disk recovery tool can find files on it (though they're all named nnnnnn.JPG or nnnnnn.AVI
or nnnnnn.DOC)

However, my 15TB array (X:\) can't be seen because it thinks it's lost two drives - fair enough - and even though I know I'm going to lose some files (the most important of which were backed up in File History) it refuses to allow me to remove the faulty 1TB
drive.  I added a new disk and it STILL won't let me.

How can I get my X: drive back? All of the disks in the array are 40-60% full - there's PLENTY of space to duplicate the files that ARE down to one copy!  What can I do?

(As per a suggestion in my other thread, I tried a System Restore to before the point where I'd Removed the 4TB drive and that didn't help since I couldn't select the X: drive to restore!)

On the left side is a card slot.   You put one of these in the card slot. An SD card you can buy at any office or camera store.    To insert a card: Hold the card label-side up, with connectors facing the slot, insert the card into the slot, and then push in on the card until it is firmly seated. To remove a card: Press in on the card it until it pops out Once the card is in the slot it will show up as a device and you need to give it a drive letter, generally D: After that, you can move all the files in your libraries (documents, pictures, etc) and your downloads folder to the SD card. This tells how generally: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-increase-storage-space-on-windows-8-1-devices-with-sd-cards/ This says Windows 8 but the process is similar in Windows 10. By default they want to install in C:\program files. Put a program files folder on the SD card and then you can direct program installs to the SD card where you are given the option. You might even uninstall some of the ones you already have and reinstall them on SD card.  Post back if you need more help. If this is "th... Read more

I have a 4x 2TB drive storage pool setup with storage spaces under parity mostly used for movies/tv shows. I decided to buy 2 more 4TB drives and add them, but I only have space for 1 more at the moment (only 6 SATA connectors on my MB). After adding it (and appearing successful), it attempted to rebalance but eventually stopped changing the %complete and Storage Spaces eventually crashed. I tried again with my second drive, and the same problem. If I do "get-storagejob" in Powershell, every time i boot up it has 3 jobs (screenshot in linked Imgur album) and 2/3 of them always fail at 42%.
I've tried removing both of the drives that failed to add (crashes), I've tried cancelling the rebalancing (crashes), and many other things but Storage Spaces continues to crash as soon as those 2 jobs reach 42% or I do anything to change something.
Data on the drive appears accessible, but any attempt to view results in eternally spinning progress bars (sometimes a second or two of video before sputtering out). I'm usually pretty good with Google and can solve my own problems but this has had me spinning my wheels for days.
OS - Windows 10 Pro
CPU - i7 6700

Right guys,

hello again . First of all thanks to everyone who helped me with my previous problem...thanks 2 u guys i have now a brilliant network with seperate back.

Okay, I'm now thinking of adding some form of additional network storage to allow everyone to share, but the problem is my house is fairly big, so signal can be an issue with wireless, especially if i want to stream HD movies from this device.

Have a look at my current setup below:-

As you can see, my stuff is all over the place, so i now want to add a network storage device, but with my house being large and having thick walls, i'm worried that if i want the network device to stream videos properly then i need it pretty close to the media centre pc downstairs. The rest of the computers/laptops only need to share/copy files to and from this device, so no video streaming is need for them.

I want to know what setup you guys recommend and if you need to adjust/move any item around, then pls do so and we'll see if its a viable option.

I eagerly look forward to your ideas.

A:Adding more storage space on a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2nd Gen

2nd gen means the model number starts with 20A7 or 20A8.  Those drives were all SATA based, so most retail 2280-format SSDs will work (not NVMe).  The biggest drives that were sold with the machine were 512GB, although 1TB and 2TB drives can be found.  The safest thing is to buy one with a Lenovo FRU on it.  Here is the parts list"  (SSDs are at the bottom)

I figured out why the error occurs. In order to add or remove drives in a storage pool, the volume needs to be deleted in disk management. So IDE drives can be added into the pool. I was having "access is denied" error both adding and deleting to the spaces with IDE and SATA drives.

Hi Everyone,

I have just cloned a RAID array and I am concerned about it's performance.

A bit of background...

My Motherboard = ASUS Z9PE-D16
RAID Card = PIKE 2008 LSISAS RAID card

The initial RAID array consisted of 6 x 1TB Seagate Constellation (ST1000NM001) SAS drives in a RAID1+0 (10) configuration.

The new array consists of 6 x 4TB WD SATA drives in a RAID1+0 (10) configuration.

Initial performance is quite slow, but this may just be due to parity checking. On paper the original, and new drives are comparable.

Whilst the original drives were SAS and the new drives are SATA they both operate at 7200RPM and have 6Gbps interfaces.

My question is - "Is my initial slow performance likely due to parity checking, or will I experience ongoing slowness?"

Any help here will be greatly appreciated. Furthermore whatever you offer with regard to help may assist a piece of Australian Cultural heritage!

Kind Regards,

After a few days of use I decided to see what happened when I tried to access it via the eSata port. No luck, due to a driver on the eSata card issue with Win 8. So I powered all back down and plugged back in via USB. At this point the Storage pool went

I have a DL 380, and I was told it was blue screening, so I put it up on the rack and powered it on, waited a day or two with no blue screen.

I then used Prime95 to stress test CPU and RAM to try to get a blue screen out of it that way, but all it does now is reset without a blue screen.

I disabled automatically reset on system failure, and it still resetted.

I then checked HP ASR to make sure it wasn't resetting the system after failure, but that was already disabled.

I checked event viewer theres nothing major in there really except a event saying the system shutdown unexpectedly.

There server has two power suppiles, one must be going bad because when I plug it in one I get the same result but only quicker thean the other.

Could the other power supply be bad aswell, and suggestion to what I should check, software/hardware wise.

If you need anymore info i'll reply quick!

A:HP DL380 Resetting randomly, NO BSOD

I would test power supplies first and then memory and temps.

I once had a power supply that failed intermittently. I got a volt meter that has a serial port interface and a program to record voltage every second. After two days, I confirmed what I suspected. The power supply would sporadically drop voltage low enough to restart the system.

I couldn't finda group for servers, so, I'm trying this one. I just bought two of these servers to fool around with.  Got them very cheap.  Trying to load Ubuntu Server onto it.   Problem is the monitor when I assume it wants to go into some sort of graphics mode.  I tried not to load anything with graphics, but, it is screwing up after I get through doing setup. My 2008 era LCD monitor just spazzes out, then finally comes up with a little box saying "Not optimum mode.  Recommend Mode 1680x1050 60Hz".  My newer monitor comes back with the message "Input not support". Specs say that's an ATI Rage XL video card in there.  Anyone know what upgraded graphics card might work?  Eventually this will be headless, but, since I'm VERY new to servers and networking, not exactly sure how to Telnet into the server, I'd like a monitor on it until I get everything set up. Thanks.  David

A:Monitor won't work with HP DL380 G3 Server

Hi, David:HP split into 2 companies a couple of years ago, and this forum is for printers, and consumer/business PC's. Servers, switches, tape drives, and the like are part of the HP Enterprise company now, You can also post your question on the HPE Community Support Forum -- Proliant Servers section. https://community.hpe.com/t5/ProLiant-Servers-ML-DL-SL/bd-p/itrc-264#.WLSQfOQzXGg

I also posted this on Technet, but I really need an answer to this.

It seems that If I can find and install another Nic Card in the Server I will also solve this problem. but to have to do this to 10 Servers is not a feasible option.

So my question is:
Why am I not able to map a network drive to a new HP DL380 G5 Server

I work in a mixed network environment and we are testing a new Point to Point Circuit.
We have many different types of Servers, but we mainly use Windows 2003 Server as our OS. As we began to test this new circuit we have found that we can map network drives to almost any Server except if it is a HP Proliant DL 380 G5.

That Server has a built in HP Embedded NC373i Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapter
It is a Broadcom chipset. Somehow there seems to be a problem with that NIC card.
It does not seem to be capable of receiving packets when they come from the PTP circuit.
If you use a regular circuit it works fine. Also this card has 2 ports for redundancy. We are using the second port for the PTP Testing. But this should not matter!

I contacted HP and they had me update the firmware and the driver for this card. The problem still occurs.

I thought it may be the point to point circuit but then I wonder why can I map drives to any other Servers that are not DL380 G5's they also have 2 port and built in NIC cards. Some of them are even Broadcom chipsets.

Well to my luck, HP told me that I will have to pay for additional Network Software support.

I want to add a second hard drive as a storage drive, without installing an OS on it. Which kind of partition (logical, extended, etc) should I create on the second hard drive to best make use of its 180 GB capacity?

Should I use NTFS or FAT32? I plan on making multiple partitions, so should they all be the same type (logical, extended, etc)?

I want to do all this using Partition Magic Pro 8.0.

Thanks in advance!
