wont wake up after hibernation

Q: wont wake up after hibernation

Got an Inspiron 6000, XP home sp2. When I let the battery run down (or whatever) and the puter hibernates it won't wake up and keep the files that were still open. I basically have to reboot it and find that everything is gone. Yes, I have low battery alarms set, but sometimes I underestimate the time it takes to get plugged back up.

Is this a hardware problem? Puter is still under warranty.

Is this a Windows problem?

I just need some general direction, don't know where to begin w/tech support if it is a hardware problem.

Thanks!

Preferred Solution: wont wake up after hibernation

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: wont wake up after hibernation

Are you saying that you keep using it until the battery is flat and shuts down from alck of power...or as you say hibernates and when you get the main power back on or restart it you files are gone that you were using?

You can go to Control Panel under power Management and set the alarm to warn you way before it gets that low....if it gets so low then your files won't be saved

My computer is to be having some problems booting when it has been asleep/hibernating/turned off. At first it seemed to be just when it had been asleep or hibernating, but recently it wont boot after being turned off for a short while (an hour or so).

What happens, is that after turning it on, I get a "No signal" message on my monitor, and nothing shows up on it. The computer turns on, it makes the usual noises, but no signal comes through to the monitor.

The only way I can seem to get it started after this is if I leave it unplugged for a while, usually at least an hour and a half or so, then it will either boot from scratch or resume Windows from sleep/hibernation.

I never have the problem turning it on at the beginning of the day when it's been off all night, so it's as if it needs to be off for a long while for some reason.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on an AMD A10-5800K and Gigabyte F2A85X-D3H, with 8GB RAM.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

A:Windows wont wake up from sleep, hibernation or turned off for a short time

Before going too deeply into this, if the light on the monitor is lit, try a different cable.

Actually, I got it going. I think it was a combination of low battery and hibernation. When I plugged it in and hit the power button it started.

Hello,

I noticed something strange and I don't understand the reason for that.
Ive got my Win7 machine set up to go to sleep after 15 minutes of idling, after another 15 minutes, it wakes up for a sec, dumps the ram into hibersys file and goes into hibernation mode.
It all works ok but the strange thing is the wake-up times. From sleep mode, it wakes up almost instantly obviously. From 1-2h hibernation mode it shows me the post screen, 'resuming windows' screen for 3-5 seconds, the 3-5 seconds of cursor flashing in upper left corner and then desktop... BUT after ~16h of hibernation, it can take up to 2-3 minutes for it to wake up. The 'resuming windows' takes much longer and the flashing cursor thing takes long enough for me to think it hung up on me.

I pretty much understand the technical side of hibernation mode. Thats why It seems strange to me - It shouldn't make any difference whether it hibernates for 1h or 15h. The ACPI state is the same, there are no changes done to the system during that time. It looks like it needs to warm itself up after longer periods of hibernation but its microelectronics, not tube radio.

If anyone got any idea, maybe a way to change it and make the wake up times more consistent, I would be really glad because it bugs the hell out of me.

Also, I could check it myself but I would have to change my power plans :P. If I allow hybrid sleep, go to sleep and then to hibernation - will it wake up to dump RAM do HDD or will it just, after ... Read more

Hi,

Basically my PC is refusing to wake itself up from hibernation (or standby) as it has done in the past. It seems like the actual task I schedule to run DOES run, but the PC stays in either hibernation or standby mode and doesn't bring itself to life. I've tried searching the Net but I haven't had any luck finding a solution so I thought I'd ask here!

I did have to restore my C: drive from a backup a few weekends ago as I installed Kaspersky AntiVirus and it basically made my PC unusable so I ended up formatting the C: partition and restoring it from my backup (going back to avast! in the process). However everything else seems to be working OK so I don't know why it's refusing to wake itself up! :-(

I'm only doing what I used to - using Scheduled Tasks and ticking the box 'Wake the computer to run this task' - but it's not working. The same tasks run fine while the PC's in 'normal' mode and my laptop has no such problem waking itself from hibernation either.

I really need to get this fixed in the next week as I go away on holiday on Friday and want to use the PC to record programmes while I'm away.

System details as follows:

Hardware: Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.00 GHz, 2 Gb RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS, ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe ACPI BIOS Revision 0706 (21/08/2006)
Operating system: Windows XP Home SP2

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm thoroughly stumped at the moment!

Thanks
Steven

Do you have an error message of some sort when you try to get out of the hibernation ? I only found this link on microsoft database about that kind of problem, don't know if it will help :

Maybe you could also try to disable hibernation, reboot the computer then reenable it.

I have to manually shut down my machine each time I try to wake it up after putting it in sleep or hibernation mode for an extended period of time. This just started happening a few weeks ago.   I did some Google searching and saw where some said it was due to my video driver needing to be rolled-back.   This is the driver I currently have installed, FYI.  Any ideas?

I decided to roll it back to the previous driver from 2015, hopefully that helps.  Not sure what else to try.

I close the lid of the laptop and the computer goes to sleep.
I open the lid and the computer says its exiting hibernation, and a text status bar goes across the black screen (before the Windows logo shows up)
Once the bar is full, the computer stops responding.
This started a few weeks ago intermittently, now it does it every time.
I have to hold the power button to turn it off, and when I restart it, it asks whether I want to delete my old restoration data and start anew, or pick up where I left off last time. (Option 2 usually has the same results as the original exit from hibernation)
So far its just an extreme aggravation. Once its running, everything works like before.
Anybody know what's up?
Its a Toshiba laptop, about 3 years old, running the original install of WinXP Home with SP2. If any more info is needed, I'll provide, but I can't think of anything right now that would be relevant.
Thanks for the help,
-Geoff

A:WinXP freezes on wake up from hibernation

Regretably its not uncommon for PCs to die in their sleep in this manner under hibernation.

Hibernation and Standby modes under Windows are problematic at best, but most laptops seem to cope to varying degrees (but fewer desktops will run the modes with success).

Its likely to be a driver issue, have you updated any recently?

Try reloading the latest Toshiba drivers for XP for that model laptop (they should be available to download from their website). Video, chipset drivers etc.

Not the BIOS update unless its specifically stated as a cure (if a BIOS update goes wrong your laptop becomes a doorstop).

Speaking from many years of experience with laptops (6 or 7 different types) I gave up on using anything but a full shutdown, you can change the "lid down" settings under Power options in Control Panel. I set mine to just turn off the screen, and I did a shutdown if I was not going to use it for a while.

I also found that odd problems with programs disappeared when not using standby or hibernation, overall reliability was vastly improved.

I recently completely wiped my hard drive because there were a lot of problems with it. I had to update and install a few drivers but every thing worked fine, 120% better than it did before. But last night told it to hibernate and i couldn't get it to wake up. The screen is blank nothing works.

the cd/dvd rom starts up and then shuts down a few seconds later. the mouse pad and the keyboard don't respond to anything. the only thing that works is the touch pad for volume, play, pause, stop etc... I've tried draining all the power from the pc (as well as the battery) but it doesn't start up all the same. It's about a year old and doesn't have any special software.

It has Microsoft Office 07, spybot, iTunes, and that's it.

If anyone has a solution or even a suggestion, it would be much appreciated.

A:BSOD when wake up from hibernation/sleep

0x116 bugchecks indicate an attempt to reset the graphics card and display driver failed to respond within the allocated time interval.
It's mainly caused by a failing GPU or bad display driver.

I suggest updating your display driver to the latest version.
If you are unsure how then here's some instructions.

I also recommend running Furmark to see if your GPU is failing (I doubt it but it's worth ruling it out as a possibility).

I live in a place where we have power shortages from time to time. I have my Dell desktop pc attached to a UPS and i have configured the pc to go to sleep after 5 minutes when on UPS. Is there anyway to wake up the pc automatically once the power is on? I have connected my UPS with USB cable to the pc, and the pc treats the UPS as a battery. I use this pc as a media centre so this feature is something i really need.
I am on Windows 7 Ultimate.

Thanks!

A:Wake the PC from sleep/hibernation when power comes up

With it being a Dell the option may very well be hidden (with no way to unhide it), but have a look in the bios under the Power options for anything relating to "restore on power loss". If it is there it is likely set to disabled (the default on most if not all motherboards), set it to enabled and that should do it.

If I were to let my computer go into sleep mode, if I let it go alll the way into it, I cant wake it up without having to turn it off and back on and having to log back in, not to mention losing open browser windows/tabs, and any other work.
Same with Hibernation, except, I cant stop that....
The simple answer would be to set it to not go into sleep or hibernation, but thats not a solution, just a temporary remedy.

Does anybody know some possible causes or other reasons?
or at least how to fix it?
I know Im clueless.

Hello ComputerTalk-Jayson,Hybrid mode is to have the computer go to sleep first, then after the time you set will go into hibernation. That is why it is taking a bit longer since your computer is resuming from hibernation and not sleep. For you what you want, you would need to set your Power Plan settings to "Sleep" and turn off "Hybrid" and "Hibernate" like in the recommended "Sleep" settings in the tutorial below. Afterwards, the computer should wake up from sleep and be ready to go in a second or two.Power Plan Settings ChangeHope this helps,Max

About 2 months ago I started noticing that my w7 professional x64 box loses its internet connection on every other wake up from hibernation.
I can connect to my local LAN but not further (I am not using wifi but wired connection).
After digging into it I found that ipconfig shows two gateway entries the 1st is 0.0.0.0 and the 2nd is the correct gateway.
I have no clue where the 0.0.0.0 comes from nor why there are 2 gateways shown.
ipconfig /renew doesn't help, but disabling the network interface and re-enabling it again fixes the problem.
Also a reboot fixes the problem.
Both solutions are only workarounds though.

I hope someone can tell me how to fix the problem.

This happens 95% of the time. sometimes it DOES work though. anyway, I looked through all the internet...or just about..and cannot find anyone who has found a cure yet. these are the symptoms.

When you go to sleep, or hibernate, when you try to wake it up, it gets stuck on a black screen for about 8 min. then restarts.

if you press shut down, it says "shutting down" and stays there 8 min. then restarts.

i have not been able to find a cure..please help.

also, i uninstalled all the windows updates from the past only leaving one. i unintsalled because i thoguht it might fix the problem and i would just search for updates so that i could get rid of the extra updates and only get the most recent updates. but now, i have no updates and when i press search for updates, nothing comes up. can anyone teach me how to reset so that any updates that apply will reappear? because i believe there are updates that apply, but since i uninstalled it, it is not going to show up on my updates list again. please help. thanks

Hi there,

I am running a Windows 7 64-bit setup, and I'm trying to get a timer to wake Windows from sleep or hibernation.

I've got it to work flawlessly on my desktop, however on my laptop, a Dell D630, I can't seem to get it to work. I've created a task triggering on a specific time and running the operation '/c "exit"', which should just start a command prompt and close it again. I've set it to "run with highest privileges" and "wake the computer to run this task". However, it just doesn't boot as scheduled.

The history of the scheduler says nothing at the moment that the trigger is set to go off, but a minut later (probably when I manually boot) I get a "Task scheduler "{....}" instance of the task "\Wakeup" due to a time trigger condition."

What can I do to fix this?

Thank you.

A:Scheduler fails while trying to wake Windows from sleep/hibernation.

Hello and welcome to Seven Forums.

Some things you can try for testing:

Turn off "run with highest privileges" - you shouldn't need it for this task

Try different setting combinations for:
"Run whether user is logged on or not" / "Run only when user is logged on"
"Start the task only if the computer is an AC power"
"Stop if the computer switches to battery power"

Compare each page in the Task settings between the Desktop and Laptop.
See if you can find some different setting(s) that might cause this.

If you logon with a Standard account when the computer sleeps, try using an Admin account.

Hope this helps,
David

My Yoga 3 Pro won't wake up from sleep / hibernation, the only sign of activity is the keyboard lights just blinking, AGAIN! :-(. This is a common problem with Yoga 2 13 models I have learnt, not only from various boards, but also my self, when I returned a yoga 2 13 after 5 days, and got the Yoga 3 Pro model. The laptop is now only 6 months old. I experienced the same wake up problems 3 weeks ago with my 3 Pro, and the shop here in Copenhagen sent it back to service. When I got it back 4 days ago, the service team had just changed "Cinch Audio" and updated the BIOS. It seems like they never really fixed the real problem. Two days ago the computer again had problems to wake up, and now it seems to be frozen in this blinking mode. I I have tried hard reboot (holding the power button for ca 20 secs), but it won't solve the problem. Has anyone experienced the same problem, and any durable solutions to it? If it stays like this, I'll hand it in, try to get it reimbursed and I will gladly buy another computer, but not from Lenovo anymore.

Ok so I have a HP Mini 110 and lately my computer has been acting strange. It wont shut down. If I try to shut it down it will act like its shutting down then re boot back up. If it goes to "sleep" (the buttons are still lit, typically the power button will just flash on and off) it wont wake up unless I use the power button.

Now this all started happening when my computer stopped or failed to update my language packs which took 28 hours to fully finish. Only 14 out of the 32 downloaded ok fine so i shut it down to just finish those that were installed. Ok so shutting down then the whole "Dont turn off your computer installing updates" then it gets stuck at 15 % then it goes to a black screen that i think said something like "initiating updates in 0 outta 321472 files" this took a good hour to finish. Then brought me back to the 15% screen then that changed to "Updates Failed" and something else, then the computer restarted.

WHAT DO I DO?? could it possibly be a virus???

Ever since getting the Hibernation feature functioning on my machine about a month ago I've noticed a very peculiar problem with the machine waking up on its own, usually when I'm not around, and I need to know how to stop it. It usually happens after the PC has been powered down for several hours. Today I had put it into Hibernation and then went out, and several hours later when I got home the thing was on, apparently having turned on by itself.

Does anyone know the reason for this and how it can be stopped? This has occurred on about four separate occasions so far over the last month.

other than that could be windows checking for updates a virus scan or so on.

The last time I had this problem was after a system install of windows 7 and it turned out the only solution that worked was reinstalling Windows 7. I want to try and avoid that as the problem is user induced.

I have done -powerdevicequery and I have set the Keyboard and mouse to not wake the keyboard. I tried system restore. I even tried deleting the hiberfil.sys. None of these steps solved the problem.

It would help if you posted the make and model of this computer so we would know what we are dealing with.

Have you tried returning all of the power options to their default settings?

This was never a problem before...

Here is what happens... I am on my laptop, when i am done with it and go to bed, i close the laptop. It remains closed throughout the day until i come home from school. I open up the laptop and the screen is just black. It does not resume its self. The computer is on though becuase i can hear the fans going and other activity. So I have to manually hold down the button to turn it off and then turn it back on, which is a great annoyance.

How can i fix this from happening?
My computer is a Toshiba Satellite 1415

A:Laptop wont recover from sleep/hibernation

Alas it's not uncommon for the computer to act in this manner, its actually "dying while asleep" for want of a better term.

More likely it dies immediately it is asked to wake up.

The cause could be any of the drivers or added hardware (if any), it's very hard to diagnose.

Laptop hardware is usually OK with hibernation, the mode was designed for use with laptop hardware in mind.

Its even possible that Windows updates may have caused a problem, with some incompatability but that is also hard to prove.

I would start by reloading every driver with the latest available from Toshibas support website.

Hi, this from another post covers your problem:-

Quote:

Hi, since this revolves around "hibernation" lets take a look there. Your hibernation settings are contained in a file "hiberfil.sys" and if it is corrupt could be the cause of your problem (none of this will do any harm). Lets clear the file:-

Open a CMD prompt (as administrator, accessories right click command prompt select "run as administrator)

At the prompt type:-
Code:
powercfg -h off press enter
reboot to take effect
This will disable hibernation and clear the hiberfil.sys file.

After reboot open another CMD prompt (as administrator, as above) and type:-
Code:
powercfg -h on press enter
reboot to take effect
Now go to this site and apply the recommended settings for power saving (inc hibernation) read it all.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/63...-problems.html

Hopefully this will resolve your problem.(don't worry about the vista applies to 7 as well)

Hello

I need your assistance with wake on lan.

hardware
Asrock b75m B75 mobo, realtek NIC onboard, win 7 x64.

issues
I could wake the pc before so i assume the tools are working and the configuration is correct. Wol in the bios is active and the option in the nic driver in the OS too. The system is setup to enter sleep mode automatically.

The last attempts to wake the pc up were unsuccessful though. The sleep led was buzzing but sending the magic packet didn't do anything.

What could interfere with wakeup? Is there maybe a bios bug? Or an OS/driver issue?

A:PC wont reliably wake on lan

It could be a driver issue or it may be caused by a firewall blocking the relevant port. Try to temporarily disable your firewall and test.

Also, try the wake on LAN from a clean boot mode (Bar any applications that are needed in order to get it to work) and see if that resolves anything. If it does then a third party application will be interfering.

hi my laptop screen is set to turn off after 5 mins, when it does i cannot wake it, no matter what buttons i push or using my mouse. this black screen also happens when i restart my computer, it logs me off the the screen goes black and computer power lights are still on and it does nothing

A:screen wont wake

Hi,

This is likely a video card driver issue (or driver issue in general) not responding to to power state transitions correctly. I would expect you'd be getting 9F related BSOD's, however, it's always a possibility.

First thing I am going to recommend is that you update your video card drivers to the latest version (depending if you have AMD or nVidia) is the website you'll want to visit.

Patrick

Adam

The video driver provides the signal to keep the monitor out of standby so if it is corrupted somehow it might not be able to come out.

check the driver in device manager

What does the power button do? Wake it up, Resume Windows, or cold boot? I'm wondering if it is
actually going into hibernation. It might be worth double checking your power plan, which
probably includes HP's extensions. Is this a desktop? (That's what the model number brings up.)

I have a Logitech G15 keyboard with a built in lcd screen that works fine when I start my computer but it will not wake up coming out of sleep mode. It displays the logitech logo but will not do anything else. If I unplug the usb cable it will reset and work fine. I spent two weeks going around and around with logitech tech support and the best they could do was give me a discount on a refurbished keyboard. I've updated and back dated drivers as I was getting bsod's traced to an old keyboard driver and everything works ok but it would be nice if I could get the clock to work. Any suggestions?

I'd suspect a driver glitch, likely related to the other driver issues you were having. The only solution for such issues is typically a fresh OS install.

My computer will go into screen saver, but after a few hours the monitor will shut off, I am assuming sleep mode altho I dont have it set to do that. If it has only been a few hours I can move the mouse or hit any key and the monitor will come back on and all is well. If it has been over nite I can click the mouse or hit a key and the desktop will come up but I cant open any programs or start firefox. Using the start button and trying to restart or shut down will not open and occasionally all I get is a black screen. When I do have the desktop and try to open a program it gives me a message like "a window cant be opened" or it cant find the file...and a few others....This has been a few weeks now and the only solution is to manually turn the computer off, then on again. It will restart everything and all is well. I have taken to just turning the computer off when I am done but I sure would like to go back to leaving it on in screensaver mode.I updated the latest video driver about a week ago, but that didnt help.
