Ideapad Yoga 11s shuts down when plugged IN

Q: Ideapad Yoga 11s shuts down when plugged IN

Hi, I have an Ideapad Yoga 11s for about 4 years and it shuts down whenever I have it plugged IN...yes PLUGGED IN. So when my laptop runs low on battery, I plug it in and within 10 seconds, it shuts off by itself. It has happened to my previous Lenovo so I guess the problem was never solved. Any suggestions? It only started happening within the last 5 months or so.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My Yoga 11s shuts down without any warning when it's plugged in. It may operate for a few or several minutes but will always eventually shut off--completely, almost violently and requires a reboot. This issue only occurs when plugged in. No problems with sudden shut down when running on battery power. The battery fully charges without issue when closed and not in use. I have been just making sure I keep it charged and use it unplugged. However use often extends beyond the battery life. The random and persistent shut off has become extremely frustrating.  What is the problem? Any solutions or ideas?

My Yoga 500 ideapad totally loses it when I plug it into power. The CPU slows down imidiately and runs at 100% usage every time I make an action (opens Chrome takes like 30 seconds). In Speccy, I can see, that the CPU runs at a speed of approx. 500 Mhz (Core speed). If I unplug the laptop, the speed goes up to like 1,9 Ghz when I opens chrome (chrome opens instantly) and CPU usage maxes out at 40% or so. I can now close Chrome, plug in the laptop once again, and if I open chrome now,it maxes out at 500 Mhz speed with 100% CPU usage. I have just completely reinstalled windows (10, 64 bit) hoping that this would solve the problem. But it haven'tI have downloaded ALL the drivers and software possible from Lenovos own support page for my laptop, I have ran numerous tests from Lenovo, and other thirdparty applications, no one in which finds any problems. What should I do? I have done everything in my power to try and fix this problem. I have tried every possibly advanced power options, I have even changed the "when plugged in" power options to match the "on battery" ones, but without any change in performance. I cannot figure out, if this is a problem with my power supply? Or the CPU itself? And no tests suggests any problems...  Anyone able to help me out with troubleshooting? My Yoga Ideapad 13 often freezes (no warning or indication) and then will shut down after about five minutes.  There's no frequency or activity pattern that I can work out, sometimes it happens soon after I start up the notebook and at other times I can be working for days without incident, and I don't think it's related to overheating or processor demand either. I have tried all the updates I can find but still have this problem.  It seems to happen more when I am connected to my docking port, but that may be just coincidence as I use it more than just the notebook on its own. Although I have my Office Apps autosave set for 1 minute I still lose work, or have to waste time recovering the data back to the working file.

Hi, I have a Yoga 14 20FY0002US running Win 10 Home. BIOS 1.49. Once in a while, the laptop will freeze if it is running on AC power. If I disconnect and reconnect the AC power, the laptop becomes responsive. I haven't detected a pattern. Naturally, if I'm at the computer, it isn't a big deal. But I use it to control a lab instrument and it needs to run experiments for hours at a time. Right now, my only "fix" is to use battery power (it hasn't frozen yet). Any solutions for this? I am VERY reluctant to update my BIOS (from 1.49 to 1.57). The last time I tried that, it bricked the laptop and had to go back for factory repair. Thanks.

I've had this problem for quite a while on my laptop. Almost every time (95% of the time) I plug the charger in, the computer automatically turns off. This is also happens when I remove the charger. This is quite a hassle and I was hoping someone could diagnose the problem.

A few stats on the computer:
It is a 5 month old, Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series non-touch.
It has an Intel i3 core.
It shows no other serious issues.

I can try my best to answer any other questions you have.

You need to contact Dell for a warranty service. If it's shutting completely off you have a hardware fault that needs to be address with them.

I am a very frustrated and angry customer at the moment as i keep running into Road Block and unacceptable answers.  This issue is enough to cause me to never buy another Lenovo laptop or any laptop at Best Buy!I bought my computer in July and in September i noticed a key had popped off-  the "< ," key next to the M key.  I have used the key board only when i was setting up-  now at my office and at customers i set it in downward dog mode ;-) and use a blue tooth key board.    So it is not from use that it broke.   I took the laptop into BEST BUY and was told that the key was missing a metal part on the back so they could not fix it onsite-  i would have to send it in and be without my laptop for a week to 10 days - unacceptable -  this was a month or more ago. I searched on the LENOVO website and could not find a way to purchase a single or the entire set of Keys!  I am self employed as a software consultant.   My life is pretty busy and i finally decided today to bite the bullet and ask for a call from Lenovo support.  Again i am told the only way to fix this is to send my laptop in for a repair.  I asked to just be able to buy a KEY - i am told that well they do not sell individual keys - they would replace the entire keyboard!  So sell me the keyboard and or send me one an i will take into best buy to have them replace it while i wait.  They cannot do that.   I live... So my grandpa got a new laptop for his birthday a while ago... Strong laptop, nice hardware. Can't remember the name or model though...
Anyway, so he runs Windows 7, and he told me that every time when he pluggs out the charging cable, the computer shuts down. But when the cable is plugged the computer runs just okay and the battery is full.

Any ideas on what might be the problem?
He only has this latop for a few weeks now, he said he didn't drop it or hit it in any kind of way...

A:Plugged = runs okay, Unplugged = Shuts down

Bdani, it looks like your battery is not connected or is not working. I would check the contacts on it and clean them. Even new ones can have corrosion.
It would help if you could find the make and model of the laptop.

Ok, I need to consult the Hive Mind bc I am at a loss. I have an HP Pavilion 15t-n200 laptop, running Windows 7. And I have been having power issues. The issue is (Within the last 2-3 weeks): My laptop turns OFF every time it goes to sleep when it's plugged in (without running through the usual shut down of Windows.). And won't turn back on unless I unplug it, take the battery out, and put it back in again. AND, if I turn it off before plugging it in, it doesn't charge the battery.I have replaced the battery with a "new" one. (It was a generic and it said it had 88 days on the battery) I have run through calibration on the battery four times. I have taken the battery out, hit the power button, and drained the battery down and recharged it. But it charges fine - I get about 2-3 hrs on it. That doesn't seem to be the problem.I have recently placed the adapter. Laptop does the same thing. My power options have not changed. Hey, I've got a  annoying problem with my laptop and was wondering if I could try to get some ideas on how to fix it.Lately, my HP pavilion has been suddunly shutting down(in like the way it does when it overheats) what seems to be prematurely, with maybe about fifty percent battery(but it isn't always at this point in time), when I don't plug it in.  There's no indication of when it will shut down, no warning, and the laptop always indicates that there's still at least some charge left when it does. I don't think the problem is overheating as this doesn't happen when the laptop is plugged in.It takes the laptop to be plugged in for the laptop to start up again.I would try to drain the battery but its premature shutdown keeps me from doing just that. Any suggestions?

Hi I have an acer aspire one 725 and I'm having some battery issues. The laptop will power up and run fine without a battery inserted, but when you insert one it immediately shuts down. I have tried with 2 brand new acer branded batteries

A:Laptop powers when plugged, but shuts down when battery

welcome to the forum....

its been seen at ours with several makes and as the batteries are new and branded, this narrows down the possibilities to points and the new battery short circuiting the laptop.

power down the machine, unplug the power supply. power the machine back on (battery). once its fully up and running plug the power supply back in....this should reset the power plan software.

now unplug the power supply and see if the machine stays on, which would be and sorted. if when you try to power the laptop back on and it doesn't light up.. then it is either physical damaged, such as a connector or a trigger within the system os.

The other day my PSU stopped working. I took a PSU from another computer and hooked it up and it worked fine, it just didn't fit inside my case. So I called a friend who had extra PSUs. He brought them down and we hooked them up. None of them seemed to work. When I hooked the PSU that didn't fit into the case back up, this time it didn't work. I looked on line and found a way to test the PSUs to make sure they were working by attaching a 18ga wire into the green and black 20 pin. Then I tested each component separately. The PSU stay on until I got to the ATX12V 4-pin power connector. That's when it shut off. Does this mean the motherboard is now fried? Help me please.

Hi. I am not a computer tech, so pardon my lack of pc language. I have a Dell Studio, running Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit OS). I have a docking station that I plug into with a monitor, keyboard, etc. For the past few months, I have not used the docking station, but this past weekend, I plugged my laptop into the docking station. I got a request for some sort of update (sorry I don't remember what for, but think it had something to do with video/monitor maybe). I went through the motions, and I think the update failed to install. I rebooted the system, and it runs fine. The only problem I encounter is when I play Runescape online, my laptop provides no warnings, and it just shuts itself off after about 15 minutes of play time. I have tried using different internet browsers (Firefox and Google Chrome) and that does not seem to help. I unplugged the laptop, and played RS and I had no problems, so I feel that the issue is with the docking station or monitor. I have no idea how to proceed in attempting to fix this issue. Please help.

After my sister knocked my laptop off my bed, immediately it began shutting off when I would plug the cord in. When that works, it shuts off when I unplug it or just move the cord a bit where it plugs into the laptop; then it won't turn on until the cord is plugged back in... I've been having overheating problems with this laptop; it overheats and shuts off every once in a while, in case that means anything to the problem at hand. Could all this mean I have a problem with the battery? I've already taken out the battery and put it back in, in case it got knocked around a bit when my laptop fell. The problem persists.

A:ideapad Z510 - turns on only if plugged in

Hi leocasasola,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You can start with the power check out guide from the hardware manual (page 21-22) testing on the integrity of the AC adapter and operational charging to isolate.

Further steps may require certain tools and skill as board level checking (power board , systemboard ports and chips etc.), so it would be best that you take time to back up your data while you can and check on your local service center.

So I bought this laptop 3 days ago. It seems like it has a charging problem. It sometimes charges when I let the laptop in sleep mode or close the lid. I sometimes get a full charge but then, when I'm using it, it just stops charging for no reason. To "force charge" it, I discovered that if I first unplug the charger from the laptop itself, then disconnect the cable from the power brick, plug it back in the laptop and connect the brick back again, it seems to charge for around 4 more minutes. I tried updateing the BIOS with the support from the official Lenovo support site (this one) but it does not work. I heard about the removing the battery and pressing the power button but I can't remove the battery.  The power brick and charger are original and seem to work fine. Should I try buying another charger? Please resond to this as I'm desperate. Thanks much !

Hello, I noticed this afternoon that the battery indicator in the system tray was at less than full and the status message reads "95% - Plugged in, not charging." This was not the case previously, and I haven't changed any battery or system settings that would affect this. I've only owned the computer for about a month or two and I'm concerned that there may be a problem with the battery. I looked up this issue online and attempted to uninstall and reinstall the driver that affects battery control in System Settings, but there was no change to this behaviour. Is there a way to test if the battery is damaged? What other problems could I be having that would produce this effect?

Hi Mina,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

1)  Shut down the computer.
2)  With the battery in (but AC adapter removed), attempt to turn on the computer by holding down the power button for 30 sec. This should not turn on the computer.
3)  Remove the battery.
4)  Again, attempt to turn on the computer (AC adapter not plugged in) by holding down the power button for 30 sec.  This should not turn on the computer either.
5)  Replace battery, plug in the AC adapter, and turn on the computer.  The battery should begin charging.

I hope the above information helps.

Laptop works like the charger wasn't plugged - energy drains from battery.I suppose that is a software problem, because when laptop is turned off or hibernated it charges normally.Formating didn't help at all.Microsoft support told me to recalibrate battery - didn't work.Lenovo support told me to try another charger in service - I will try if nothing else works.Maybe someone had the problem like that and solved it without going to service, which I want to keep as a last resort solution. Thanks in advance!
