Preferred Solution: Function key doesn't work properly

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After recently purchasing a new pc, I have found that my copy and paste function no longer works correctly. When I copy something, half of the time it does not paste, or pastes a random single letter.

Is this a problem that could easily be fixed, or could it be something that has infected my pc?

Thanks in advance.

I've had windows 10 for several months (previously had windows 7). Up until yesterday, when I clicked on "all apps" an alphabetical list would come up, I'd scroll to what I wanted, and click on it. If there was an item with a sublisting, like Microsoft office a down symbol would appear. Click on that and the sublisting would appear and I could select word, excel, etc. Now when I click on the down symbol it just flips to an up symbol ^ and no sub menu appears. I'd really like to get to excel. This failure to bring up a sub menu happens for every down symbol, not just Microsoft office. What do I do? Try to re-load Windows 10? Uninstall and reinstall Office? Thanks

A:"All Apps" function doesn't work properly

Hi, do you have any idea what happened yesterday? For example, if you look at your update history- did you receive an update?

Do you have System Restore on, and do you have any useful restore points?

Do you use system imaging (Windows Backup and Restore) or disk imaging which we keep strongly recommending here; that means you can restore an image previously created and get your Windows back running as was without technical help - and even recover from a disk failure or an unbootable PC? (e.g. Macrium reflect (free)).

Those could give you ways to recover.

What is your build version? (Windows key + R, winver).

If you haven't started using those vital recovery methods yet, you could try this:

Hello,
I am having problems with my TV out. I have recently had my video card replaced and now have Geforce Nvidia FX5200. I can see the desktop on the TV, but I cannot watch movies, I only see the frame of the player and blackness in it, no movie.
I have tried updating the drivers. Nothing works. I am sure there is something somewhere I have to check or uncheck, but unfortunately I don't know what or where.
I would be very pleased if anyone could help me out here. TV out has no meaning if I cannot watch movies.
Much obliged,

Update to the newest drivers.

Un-Install your other drivers from add/remove programs. Reboot. Now install the new drivers from www.nvidia.com

This is quite a weird problem and it started when I replaced Firefox 3.6 with Firefox 4 (as in uninstall Firefox and install Firefox 4).
Everytime I am browing now Firefox 4 doesn't function properly in the taskbar. I made a screenshot of it which shows the problem much better.
As you can see Chrome and Foobar2000 are function properly and the way I want it, but Firefox 4 doesn't. It show the open browser and the icon to start another Firefox window and that's not how I want it.
Could anyone help me with this small problem?

I'm not having any problems with FF. I'm using RC1 version... Click on that icon and remove it from taskbar. After that click with right click on firefox icon(that you browse) and select Pin to Taskbar.

I have no idea what my sister and her friends were doing on the comp for a couple of days that i decided not to use it, but now:

- a few programs take forever to load or don't load at all, but they do show up under the processes tab in the task manager
- after pressing Ctrl Alt Del, the task manager icon appears in the system tray, but the thing only shows up a minute later
- my system recovery is "not able to protect my computer," and restarting does nothing
- actually, when restarting or shutting down Windows, it stops at where it only shows my desktop background and cursor [which is still able to move] and nothing else after that, so i have to hold the power button and force it to shut off
- when I right click the desktop and click on "Properties..." [or something similar to this action] it doesn't show up at all, and whenever I try to open any application after that, they don't even load at all either

Things i've tried to get rid of these problems:
- Virus scan with avast!, a couple viruses found and fixed, but nothing changed.
- disk clean up, nothing changed
- registry clean, nothing changed
- CURRENTLY defragging my C drive, hope something changes..

Anyone know what the heck's going on!?
Anyone got any suggestions on what to do next?
Anything helps and would be greatly appreciated!

A:Apps not starting properly, sys. recov. doesn't work, can't shut down properly, etc..

no replies yet?

anyway, just stopped by to say that when shutting down, it takes forever to get to the "Saving your settings..." screen, and that's where I decided that it stops and nothing else after that.
Defragged my C drive, still no results besides the computer feeling a bit smoother-running o_o

Hi every one, first post here. I've been using Win 7 Ultimate 64 since the end of 2013 and never experienced any issues until now. Here is the problem:

The right click menu on most of the desktop icons doesn't open the programs. The menu opens, however clicking the "open" option or some of the other options doesn't work. Left clicking the same icons opens the programs without any issues. All the programs that do not open using the right click method are programs installed to windows. Programs like "Computer" "Recycle Bin" "Control Panel" etc. which are generic windows programs work as expected.

My computer is custom built by myself and has been rock solid. What I did was uninstalling some of these programs and reinstalling them with no resolution. Just finished a session with a MS attendant that finished in error when he was restarting my PC, but it didn't look like he had any idea what the problem was, he just run some tests that didn't show any errors.

I installed Kasperski Total Security about a month ago, but uninstalling the program didn't change anything.

Here is an example: right clicking the Google Chrome icon in the tray opens the menu, left clicking "Chrome" opens the browser however clicking on all the other options listed doesn't work, most of the other icons in the tray work properly, there are other icons on the desktop that behave in a similar manner, actually there is one Google Chrome that opens u... Try going to MSCONFIG and performing a clean (diagnostic) boot. If that works, something in startup is breaking the context menu. Next, go to Programs and Features and sort by install date, and see if uninstalling something works. Then do the same for Windows updates. You also could create a new user account and see if it works there.

If you have taken anything out of startups via msconfig please go to Start – Run – type in msconfig – click OK and click on the Startup tab. Put a check mark beside everything you see listed there and then please do the following:

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Have you checked to see if the search function works in SafeMode?

Have you installed any updates to the current software like your AV program for instance?

Anyway, the first thing I'd try would be to run SFC from a command prompt within Windows XP and see what happens

sfc /scannow

BTW, in reference to the services, I doubt that's an issue. Windows XP will start a service if it's needed, regardless of whether you've disabled it.

Hello Bill

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder.
Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install.
You'll need your XP CD or the files from the I386 folder.

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders.
Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View
Check ?Show hidden Files?
Uncheck ?Hide protected system files?
Apply

You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf folder.

I have about 600 gigs of storage space and windows search doesn’t work so I’m a bit frustrated at this problem.

When I run windows search function I get 2-3 recently created files and nothing else. The process of getting these results take less than a second sometimes and it doesn’t comb threw my folder structure the way it used to. I have indexing on and I’ve had indexing off but this does not effect the results. I’m not sure when this problem first popped up but I assume it was about 4-5 months ago when my step dad changed my network settings because of some bad advice from some tech support who didn’t know what kind of system I had.

I’ve tried using “Windows Desktop Search” and that didn’t work either so I uninstalled that. I don’t want to use 3rd party search programs just because the windows search has worked fine for me so far with the exception to this. Any help is appreciated

Thanks.

I recently upgraded my 3 computers to Windows 8.1. Only 1 PC (INTEL) is working as it should. The other 2 PC's are AMD based and the search function is acting funny. When I search it gives my the results, but when I click on says I'm looking for DEVICES AND PRINTERS and I search "printers", it gives my the result. If I click on DEVICES AND PRINTERS tab it doesn't respond, but when I click on say my Canon printer's link to MY PRINTER it responds. I ran SFC/SCANNOW and also DISM (Micorsoft actually ran it) and nothing changed. It sometimes locks me onto the Meto screen and I have to reset the PC to get back to my normal Desktop. When it does that non of the Metro tiles works. Micorsoft technician also tried to create a new user account which comes out blank and when creating another account, as soon as you log into the account it immediately signs out of it and don't allow you access. I tried to refresh the pc, but the frustrating part is, it asks you to choose a keyboard layout, but disables all USB and PS ports. Now how do I choose a keyboard layout, unless I have a touch screen. Microsoft really didn't think this trough. Is there anybody that perhaps now how to get the searh to work. Oh I do have searchindex.exe in my system32 folder and in services I stop and restarted Windows Search, but still no change.

A:Search function in Windows 8.1 doesn't work as it should

Problem solved. After Microsoft technicians tried everything and my PC crashed I decided to just redo. Then I found out that a program called Wisecare 365 that I was running on my Windows 8 PC caused all the problems. It went and deleted registry and other files that windows 8.1 need to operate with. So it's no longer on my PC and so far Windows 8.1 is running fine.

Bill

A:Restore function doesn't work anymore

It sounds as if System Restore may have become corrupted. You can try reinstalling the feature. Here's how:In Control Panel or Windows Explorer, click Folder Options and then View tab
Under Advanced Settings, scroll down and find "Show hdden files and folder." Check the box.
Find "Hide extensions for known files types." Uncheck that box. Click Apply, OK.
In Windows Explorer, find your Windows folder (usually on the C: drive but not always). Navigate to the inf folder and open it.
Find a file named sr.inf
Right click the file and select Install.

Important: This creates a new installation of System Restore, but it will delete any restore points that you had created previously.

I recently installed new hard-drives, 1 master and 1 slave. I still have all of my data from the new drive transfer, I can install and run programs on my new drive, but some of existing applications aren't working properly.

The most critical is my problem with " System Restore". Everytime I run System Restore from the Start Menu > Accessories > ... , I get the pop up for debugging it. The pop up is the grey box that says "Send Error Report or Don't Send". While it was working I used it everyday, but now it always crashes when I open it up. What happens if something bad happens to my PC, how will I be able to restore my PC to an earlier secure stage? Please help me, it's critical that I get use of my System Restore back again. Do I have to reinstall WinXP again or what?

Microsoft Word keeps telling me to "repair" the program everytime I open up a word document. Now, I'm able to open up a word document, read it, edit and save. But when I open them up it also talks about the repair, a "Windows Installer" box pops up, then disappears, afterwards telling me to reinstall\repair Word 10.0 or something like that because there's an error in Microsoft Office. Should I reinstall\repair my Microsoft Office CDs?

Hi there
For a lot of people the ability to mount ISO's natively on a REAL (not a Virtual) Machine was a great addition to the basic functionality of Windows.

This worked really well on the preview edition of W8 (the one with the sideways fish at longon) but doesn't work properly on a few computers I've seen.

(This is also AFTER a brand new install -- so it's nothing to do with any user installed drivers / components).

It also only happens on machines that have an INTERNAL DVD drive too -- it doesn't happen on my Netbook for example which doesn't have a DVD drive - even when an external USB one is attached.

You get the message "XXXX couldn't be mounted" or "Error in mounting XXX" -- can't remember the actual error as I'm typing this on an Android smart phone -- having a delicious Breakfast in a nice old fashioned "Greasy Spoon" place --before it gets replaced by those odious trendy "Trattoria" or whatever.

The Iso does actually get mounted by windows explorer on to a "Virtual DVD device" correctly and can be "ejected" when you've finished with it but the error message that appears every time is very annoying even if it can be safely ignored.

I REALLY LIKE this feature - also great when you'v extracted say two or 3 DVD ISO's to a usb stick --then mounting the DVD ISO's and playing the movies.

Cheers

Hi!
I'm about to prepare some OEM computers and have made a simple unattend.xml-file with help from the answering file sample from WAIK, but I can't get it to work properly.

I have copied the file to the root directory of an USB drive and it seemes like the installation program is reading the file (e.g. I don't have to specify an computer name when finalizing the installation) but it's not as automated that I would like it to be. I have to choose wich Windows version to install (basic, HP etc.), the disk partitions listed in the xml-file is not automated (I have to choose wich drive to use for installation), I need to confirm the license agreement, choose date and time options.

What can be wrong? I would like a clean, working autounattend.xml-file that automatically installs and also temporarily activates the administrator account so I can install updates, drivers and such and then seal everything up with sysprep.

Can anyone help me with this?

Hi. This problem affects my Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 computer.
Occasionally, when I log on the computer after locking it for a long time, the keyboard acts as if the Windows Key is depressed. (Pressing E opens explorer, R opens the Run dialog, U opens Accessibility Options, etc.)

This is fixed easily by entering the security dialog (Ctrl+Alt+Del). However, once I do this, the Windows Key appears to stop functioning.
Tapping it will not open the start menu (for the record, nor will Ctrl+Esc), and none of its combinations work except Winkey+L to lock.

Can someone explain to me why this happens and how to fix it?

Recently I've come across a situation where my computer will boot with no keyboard function. I cannot enter bios, boot in safe mode, etc. However, upon Windows 7 loading I have full function of the mouse. That is until I hit any key on the keyboard, then I lose left click function only. I can still move the mouse, I can still right click with the mouse. I also noticed that caps lock and number lock did not work either.

I figured that maybe the keyboard was bad and so I plugged in a different brand new keyboard and booted up the computer. Everything worked fine. The keyboard worked flawlessly, the mouse had no problems at all.

Restarted the computer to install windows updates, and upon the next boot I once again was left with no keyboard function and then once again no left click function.

These problems only began after a program was uninstalled due to it freezing up during use. (The program was a puzzle game that was purchased and installed from a reputable game website)

I am at a complete loss, and I cannot tell if this is a hardware problem or a software problem or even a virus problem.

Both the mouse and keyboard are USB. Other USB devices work fine, including a headset, a printer, and a scanner.

Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I've had this problem for quite some time and I think its about time I tried to sort it out.
I have a Toshiba satellite Laptop running windows XP and the latest WMP is my preferred media player.

About a year ago I had a Virus on this laptop that wouldn't allow me to connect to the internet. A friend took me through the steps in the security and the web part of this board and we dealt with the virus.

Ever since the play all function in windows that appears when you have media files in a folder has not worked. When I click play all I see the hour glass briefly but then nothing happens. If I try to select the files I want to play right click and then play all again nothing happens.

I don't get any warning or error messages, its as if the computer is ignoring my request

double clicking on a single file opens it in WMP normally.

I don't know if it is related but when this happened the quick media buttons on the laptop which allowed me to open WMP, play, pause, stop and select next track also stopped working and still don't.

Thanks for your help.

A:Play all function doesn't work for music or video files

To fix the file playing issue, try reinstalling WMP.

The buttons need special software installed and running. Try downloading it from Toshiba and reinstalling.

I realise this subject has just about been done to death, e.g. by Lithium on 07-06-2011, but I just have to let off steam somehow - it really doesn't seem to work! Let me explain.

I recently acquired an HP Pavilion dv7 laptop computer, with Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium pre-installed. While I was excitedly making my first investigations of Windows 7, I created another partition, labelled A:, and moved all my documents to it from C:, using the Location tab of My Documents Properties. I do this in order to have data in a different partition from the system files, in case the OS partition gets trashed for any reason.

Eventually, I needed to find a file which I knew existed amongst a certain group of folders. I was astonished when Search failed to find it, and I eventually had to track it down by hand. Since then I have established that Search will not find any files on my A: partition, no matter what folders I specify in the Included Locations on the Indexing Options dialog box. Indeed, if I select Advanced, to go to where I can force a Rebuild of the index, when I come out again Indexing Options will remove any additions I made to the search locations, and reinstate the original (not very useful now) defaults of Start Menu and Users. Even if I do a search from Windows Explorer while sitting in a folder on A: just above where I know a specific file is, Search will fail to find that file.

I have looked through stacks of forums and other help sources givi... Read more

Good Morning.

First of all excuse me for my English, but I am Italian.

I am tryng to install Norton Goback Personal Edition, but I have some problems.

Untill two weeks ago I couldn't use this software because of a Linux Installation of my disk. Recently i have bought a new and larger disk that I have installed as the master one, installing the older one as slave. Then I have copied all the partition except the ext2 partition on the new disk. Now on my primary disk i have 3 primary partitions (Win 98 on fat32, Win2000 on NTFS5 and another NTFS5 partition) and an extended one which contains 4 other partitions (3 with FAT32 filesystem and one with NTFS5 filessystem).

Now let's talk with my problem: when I install Goback with the proper dual-boot installation method, Goback tells me that there are unsupported partitions on my primary disk: the installations finishes without problems, but Goback protects every partition exept the ones containing the operative systems: obviously this renders Goback totally useless for me.

I can't uderstand where is the problem: all the partitions on primary disk are FAT32 or NTFS5, which should be totally supported, but Goback doensn't agree. The disk is a Maxtor Diamond Plus 9 whith an 80 GB size. I know I could repartition and reformat the drive, but I would take a lot of time and I would prefer to avoid it, if possible.

Has anyone ever had a similar problem before? Is there any solution?

Thank you in advance and good... Read more

A:Norton Goback doesn' work properly.

i would change the slave to master and master to slave.

I have a Win7 laptop connected via a WRT54G2 wireless router to an XP SP3 desktop. Both the laptop and desktop can see shared resources and both can connected to the internet.

In the Laptop's Network and Sharing Center, however, things are not correct. The Laptop has two connections to the router, lan and wireless. The lan's connection appears OK, but I cannot generate a map. I get "Windows cannot discover any computer or device." The wireless network is public. I don't know why and I don't know how to change it. Also, when I try to create a new network connection, the laptop sees only a WRT160N router (which I don't have; perhaps I did a while ago, when the laptop ran Vista). No place to add a new one.

I have Cisco's Network Magic and it can correct see everything, including the right router.

Additionally, the Win7's connection to the XP's shared resources disappear from time to time. Now, they are not there. I literally didn't do anything. (This is my second Linksys router.)

So, I just bought a Lenovo Legion Y530, 8thgen I7 8750H, 16gb RAM with a GTX 1050Ti. Installed the drivers and it was everything fine untill I tried to play GuildWars 2, and it kept freezing after sometime. My solution was to lower the graphics quality and run the game in compatibility mode - the only thing that apparently made it run properly - when I should just be able to play it normally. My main problem though is that I work with Sketchup 2017 and Vray 3.4 and when I start to model my Sketchup would freeze and then crash after some time running. Then if I try to open Sketchup 2017 again the following message will appear:"The following errors were found when launching Sketchup:- Hardware acceleration is unsupported or has been disabled on your graphics card. Sketchup requires that you use a hardware accelerated graphics card.Unfortunately, these errors will prevent Sketchup from running. Updating your graphics card drivers might fix the problem."If I restart the Notebook it will work fine again. It seems like the driver is being disabled after the Sketchup crashes. I already Updated Windows, reinstalled the drivers trough GeForce Experience, tried to reinstall the drivers manually trough NVidia website. But nothing seems to work. I can't keep restarting multiple times during my working hours and I don't find anything else that might help me, only people saying "Go for Sketchup 2016", but with a brand new notebook this is kind of frustrating.. I bought a 500gb SSD sep... Read more

I have just bought a computer with a ASUS P5GDC-V Deluxe MOB with a P5 3.0. Hard drives are two Maxtor SATA drives configured in Intel's Matrix Raid 0+1 configuration with 1GB Ram.

I can not get the integrated soundcard on the Intel 915G chipset to read the microphone. I have to nearly swallow the microphone and yell for any flicker on the meter to register. The MOB came with the C-Media 3D sound driver and software programs.

Also, and most likely related is the fact that when I tried to install and configure a US Robotics internal FAX, Data, Voice modem that the computer would lock up.

Can you help me understand what to is going on and how to fix this problem?

A:Microphone and Modem doesn't work properly

Hi,

Two things.

First of all delete all sound card references in Device manager and reload your sound drivers. Most ASUS boards require that you load sound drivers last for best operation.

The modem Issue:

Give this a try:

To to the modem manufacturer's website and download the latest and best drivers. (forget the disk that came with the modem)

Go into Start, Control Panel, System, Harware, Device Manager and remove ALL references to a modem.

Shut down and physically remove your modem and place it in PCI #3 (third slot down from the AGP port)

Enter BIOS setup menu and make sure the PnP is set to DISABLED>

Save and Exit

Reboot and when it finds the modem force feed (Don't listen to the XP message that says the best drivers are loaded) the drivers you have downloaded.

This should get you going.

I have a Samsung R580 laptop and the trackpad button doesn't work quite right. The button is a single piece button. The right clicking works just fine, but when I try to left click, it doesn't always work. I'll have to press really hard to get it to work. This has only started the last couple of weeks. I know that I probably shouldn't, but I take a thin knife and stick it in the crack surrounding the button and slide it back and forth a few times. This seems to fix the button momentarily, but only for a few seconds. After which, it goes right back to hardly working. I have no idea of what's wrong. I can use a mouse, but it's much more convienient to use the trackpad button. I can also use the trackpad it's self to tap which will do the same thing as clicking the button, but I keep clicking things I don't want to. Any ideas ? I don't know that the keyboard being dirty is causing it, as every other button works perfectly.

It sounds like you might actually need a trackpad repair or replacement. Are you still under warranty?

I updated Windows 7 64bit and it installed IE9 64bit. I used to be in IE8 64 or 32bit. I'm not sure.

When on IE9 I had so much problems with flash player. So I uninstalled the updates to IE9.

Now my IE8 doesn't fully work anymore. I updated Flash player, thinking that was the problem. Some thing with Internet Explorere (non-64bit)

I play a lot of those Facebook applications like farmville and cityville. I can get to the game ok, but any popup within the game to ask request, don't work anymore.

I am already using firefox for my other account, so I need IE working.

A:IE8 doesn't work properly after uninstalling updates from IE9

is there a specific error? perhaps a screenshot.

When I installed IE9 on this machine and then removed it,. the only noticeable problem I have is I get the new welcome box everytime I fire up the first session.

I am not sure if anyone has experienced same thing, but it is very weird to me.

I am using a Lenovo T43 laptop, and recently my both Ctrl buttons are not working properly. When I am at the desktop interface and hit the Ctrl button, my desktop will refresh. It seems that it shut down the explorer.exe and restart it.

And if I have a file explorer window opened and hit Ctrl button, the window will be closed immediately, so I can't use ctrl+c or ctrl+v to copy and paste in the file explorer. It is really annoying.

Can anyone help me on this issue? Thanks!

Hi all, Currently i am using laptop HP Probook 450 G3-X4K55PA, i need to use Ubuntu for my work, so i installed Ubuntu 16.04. My laptop doesn't work well with this OS, when i plug a monitor via HDMI port, my laptop hangs, it can't work anymore, so i must turn off the power. When i put my laptop in sleep mode, it can't come back, it is hanged, i must turn off power to take it back. I tried to install different Ubuntu version many times, but it still has the issues. I install WIndows on my laptop, it works well. Please help to solve the issues with Ubuntu. Regards,Han.

A:My laptop doesn't work properly with Ubuntu

Hello, Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for your post. I am afraid this PC officially supports Windows OS only and Linux-based like Ubuntu are not officially supported. Therefore, you may experience certain issues while with Ubuntu due to the lack of proper drivers loaded there (in the Kernel). Ubuntu 16.04 uses Kernel 4. You may try older Ubuntu versions such as with kernel 3.13/3.16/3.19 - Ubuntu 14 LTSYou can also try to post at the Ubuntu forums where Linux/Ubuntu gurus may be able to provide you with specific advice about the problem >> https://askubuntu.com/>> https://ubuntuforums.org/  An alternative option would be to install Windows as a main (host) operating system but run Linux Ubuntu as a virtual one from inside Windows using free software like Oracle VirtualBox >> https://www.virtualbox.org/>> https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Screenshots
