Win7 Open Save Dialogs open to currently activated folder

Q: Win7 Open Save Dialogs open to currently activated folder

Win7 Ultimate

I hope I can explain this clearly.

When I go to an Open or Save dialog box in any application and I click on any folder any where in Windows outside of the application, the Save as... or Open dialog for that application switches to that folder, which is great feature because it quickly enables me to change the location in those dialogs. It's not currently working.

My question is, where is the setting the enables or disables that functionality.

Thank you for any help

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In Windows 98, I was able to access my folder shortcuts in all open & save dialog boxes, no matter what program I was using. In XP, the shortcuts are all hidden. For instance, in the My Documents folder I had a shortcut to my D:\ drive (2nd hard drive where most of my files are stored) and it was accessible in Win98 whenever I viewed My Documents in an open/save dialog box so I could get to it quickly. In XP, no shortcuts are displayed in these dialog boxes.
Is there a way around this?

Just put together a new system. Decided to install Vista 64. I'm having numerous problems.
IE7 fails to run. Error mentions actxprxy.dll.
Open and save dialogs crash Word 2007 and other apps.
Boot time is quite slow, with blank screen for about 20 seconds after login.
Sometimes, it is slow to take keyboard input. Processors are idle most of the time.

I've installed all the Windows, Office 2007, graphics processor updates. Ran office diagnostics.

Any ideas?

After you installed VistaX64 did you install SP1 then Windows Update? Have you check the event logs for possible reasons?

Anyone else getting SaveAs dialogs save, but the box stays open? It's weird. For example I save a file in a folder where the same filename already exists. It asks me if I want to overwrite the existing file. I click to do so. But the box stays open. If I hit Enter again to work the Save button, I get the overwrite query all over again. Mouse click seems to work normally. But the Enter key has something weird going on.

Hello guys. WinXP has a great app named XFilesDialog, it allows us to set custom size to GetOpenFileDialog and GetOpenFileDialog, and added custom buttons so that we could add favorities and have history link to latest folders and files.

But unfortunately the developer had been very lazy last years and takes more than 1 year to release 1 update with some bugfixes.

Is there any alternative, fully developed for XP64 and 7 Win64, with the same features?

I was just about to make a thread about the same thing.

I have Googled unsuccessfully.

I'm on XP Pro SP2.
I use "Details" view as my default in Windows Explorer, and want that to be the default view for all my application File Open and File Save dialogs, but they always default to "List" view .

Some Microsoft apps can be forced to keep Details view *for that session only* by setting to Details and holding down the CTRL key while processing the first file, but after re-opening the app, I'm back to List view.

Whoever at Microsoft decided to make List the default needs to have itching powder sprinkled in his shorts.

I'm hoping someone has a solution.

Thanks -

File Open and File Save As dialog boxes do not show all files and folders known to be present, i.e., that show in Windows Explorer.

- This happens in all programs.
- It is not that the files are hidden or system files.
- It is not that the dialog is only showing files of a certain type.

It gets partway through the list of files and folders and stops. If I type in a sub-folder it will go to that folder, and then when I go back all the files will be shown. It is like it had to "reset" or "rescan" the file structure or something.

I only noticed this problem over the past few weeks. Don't know what might be different about my machine in that time.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

A:File Open and Save As dialogs do not show all files -- not the obvious

Have you tested by showing hidden, folders and files in folder options ?
This is usually a sign of malware but many people seem to be having it,
The problem is not many of them add what security suites they have installed or any prior security suites ?
So the issue seems to be in limbo.

In several programs, including Outlook Express, I would like to be able to move folders in open Save/Open and Insert Picture dialogs (in order to avoid lots of scrolling). Now my folders are (mostly) at "the end of the line," at the right, in the dialog boxes.(I would like to see the folders appear at or near the left side when I insert an attachment or a picture or try to open a file in these programs.)I'm guessing I inadvertently changed a setting (a global setting?) . . . because the folders and their icons used to appear "at the top of the line," readily accessed after selecting File>Open or File/Save.In my attachment, you can see, as shown by the slider at the bottom, that the folders are at the right side of the window. I have also tried to fix this, looking for the My Places Bar in the open/save dialogs of several apps, without finding it . . . although I didn't look in all apps.

Ok. I'm on XP, am using a network connection to the internet, with either Cable or DSL (I can't remember), My compy is a Laptop (Gateway), and the only things that I download are from OverClockedRemix, a videogame music site. (for the record, it's cool)

Whenever I hit Save, or Open, on both Paint and IE, the save/open box will close, as well as the program, after the computer stops making the 'thinking noises' (the HD and stuff) . IE: I open Paint. I want to load in a picture, so I hit open. When it opens, and the computer stops making it's 'thinking' noises, it closes Paint.

Thank you in advance, and I hope I can get it fixed. It's really annoying.
Edit: It's now doing the close on the My Pictures folder. This is beginning to suck.

why are there two? can i make the second one go away? it reminds me of XP, and it makes my head ache

A:why two "open/save" dialogs?

I think theres more than two. It depends on the version of windows it was compiled on/for and the compiler would've built in the dialogs for that version. Ive seen some even older ones for Windows 9x. Really Windows should override the dialogs for the latest version imo.

Not sure what happened. The Visio files were opening just fine a few minutes ago, and now when I try to open them, IE prompts me continuously for "Open, Save, Save as." I tried all three options for the fun of it and IE still prompts every time.
Tried opening them from a remote PC and they open just fine. Can't do anything with them on my PC except view them in Visio itself.
I've tried resetting IE settings. Uninstalling IE 11 and going down to 10. Nothing in event viewer for IE.

Is there a way of settings the default Open and Save folder in 2000?

A:Frontpage 2000 Open and Save Folder

Do you understand what you're doing in Front Page?

Here's the quick rules that a lot of people seem to be unaware of:

When you want to create a web site, you should first create one by hitting File-New-Web and giving it the exact location where you want it to reside.

When you want to create a page within that web, you should first create one by hitting File-New-Page within that Web.

When you go back the next day to work on your web, you must first open your web, and then your page.

People who don't do this run into trouble. Took me a long time to figure it out. If you don't do it this way, you'll end up with three or four web pages and you can't figure out how to put them together!!

Then again....maybe I haven't answered your question at all?

I could not see any shortcuts to files or folders within the open dialog.

Okay, this is not really a problem/question but an idea I am throwing out in hopes that someone may have a clever solution. When I am on the computer, often I have 4 or 5 different programs open at once, moving from one program to another. Not uncommon...I might be writing in word, doing a graphic to go in that document in Illustrator or Photoshop, doing a screen capture...ALL FOR THE SAME PROJECT.

As a consequence, I want to save all my work from these programs to the same folder on my hard drive, but usually each program remembers where it last opened and saved their respective files. Each one could be different. I spend a lot of time navigating from one folder to another...

It would be wonderful if I could "preset" a "project" folder, and then EVERY program I then used would open/save to that folder by default (until I changed it), wouldn't it? Is there such a utility that might do that? Is there some hidden Windows feature that I don't know about that does that? Am I dreaming?

Just throwing it out there...

A:Make Win7 open a folder at the end instead of the beginning..?

I really don't think that can be done, as it really is opposite of any logical reason.

You could reduce the width of the columns to the left, which will move the last column so it is visible when you open the folder. If you close those columns enough there will be no slide bar at the bottom.

Hi All,

I work on a web application that has Excel and Word documents in it.

At the moment when a user opens these documents in IE9 they get presented with a dialog box asking:

What do you want to do with "filename"?

The user is presented with Open, Save and Save As as the options.

Unlike previous versions of IE there is no check box to tick to remember the user's choice so it comes up every time.

This is a weird problem I've not seen before and I could use some help or someone to point me in the right direction. I searched the forum with no luck.
I'm assuming this is an issue related only to my machine and not an IE7 problem.

When I click on this link (or one in similar format on the same page), the new window will initially begin to open. Then the new browser instance is redirected to another site....which seems fine & the page switches to the new address, then suddenly the window disappears and the "File Download-Security Warning" box appears and asks if I want to save the file or find a program online to open it with:
Program Name: browserRedirect
Type: Unknown File Type
From: ax.phobos.apple.com.edgesuite.net

Clicking on "Find" takes me to the Windows File Association web page where it says that windows does not recognize this MIME type.

Here's the actual link:
If I need to register a file type, I don't where to start! I scrolled through all the file types in My Computer and honestly, I'm at a loss as to what to do.
Could this be related to some corrupted mime file or something?

Hello lawrance,
Generally this is my full I.E. Reset directions >>
This should be done with Internet Explorer open (even if you are having problems with it), not Firefox / Chrome or another browser.

Click Tools or the Gear icon at the top of the browser > Go down the list to click on Internet Options > Go across to the last tab that should be Advanced >  Click on Advanced and then Reset (near the bottom) > You should get a Confirm box pop up > Tick Delete Personal Settings and now Reset.
This last part may be where the infection changed things -
While there > Go back to Connections Tab, and down to LAN Settings. Open this and check that the only box ticked is Automatically Detect Settings, and untick any others. Click OK >Apply if you changed anything and OK again.
Back to the General Tab and make sure your Home Page is entered correctly in the box. Re-set it if not, clock Apply and OK to close out
Once the settings have all been reset, Close that box. Close any other open boxes. Now close I.E. and Reboot your computer.
Let us know if this helped -

Hi all, this is my first post. I'm not sure which category this fits in, so I'll post here first.

I just got a new Samsung RC420 laptop with Win7 Home Premium edition OS. When I was installing a software last night, a message pops up and tells me I cannot continue installation until I close a certain program (in this case it was Adobe Updater, which was not opened at all).

Today, I am trying to open "my briefcase" from a USB thumb, but a message pops up telling me I cannot open "my briefcase" as it appears a file in it is already open. But nothing else is open on my computer. It was my first time opening anything from the USB thumb.

Is this a common problem with win7? How can I rectify it? Please help.

A:Cannot open folder or continue task because file or folder is open?

No this is not a common problem with Windows 7.

Looks like you need to use the program Unlocker. This program works for both x86 and x64 platforms.

Download and install the program. This will add an entry "Unlocker" to your right click context menu.

Whenever you face a problem mentioned above, on the target file right click and choose "Unlocker". This will show any program / process currently accessing the file. It also gives you an option to kill that program / process so that you can go ahead and do whatever you wish to accomplish.

Hi Everyone,

I'm completely stuck and need help. My wife's notebook - compaq presario mobile athlon4 1.2GHz with 384mb ram running XP home SP1 has been melting down! She started running adobe photoshop 7.0 to edit some large images and it would just suddenly do one of two things 1)say it had an eror and couldn't save anything then just freeze 2)suddenly flash to a blue screen filled with white text and shut itself down. We sent a system error report to microsoft and it suggested a problem with the synaptics touch pad. I then spent about 2 days downloading all compaq updates and microsoft updates including XP service pack 1. However it continues to do the same things. If you go on the photoshop website it suggests thngs like disabling MMX extensions etc which I've don't to no avail.

Anyway I just thought this was a photoshop thing but now it seems to be affecting XP itself. When you just open the folder with the work and images that my wife has been working on the folder flashes open then the desktop icons and lower bar disappear leaving the background and then the icons and bar return with no report of error or anything. If you copy the folder to another disk drive you get the same thing when you open the folder. Also if you share the folder and open it across the network on another machine - in photoshop under windows 2000 it crashes photoshop. I have tried running chkdsk and defragmenting the drive but it still happens.

Thanks for you help again,

A:Solved: Changing folder in which "Open/Save File" lands

Go to File, then Options, then click the "Save" button, and change the "Default File Location" option. You may have to do this for Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc... separately though.

I've experienced this problem twice in the past week. Here is my current problem:

New Windows 8 computer
Moved Office 2010 install from old computer to new computer
Copied all documents to new computer by installing the old drive in the new computer (NTFS to NTFS)

When trying to open any DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, or PPTX files that are stored in the Documents folder I get permission errors. Word will open an RTF file just fine. If I try to use any Office programs to save a file to the Documents folder, I also get permission errors. I can move the file to the Desktop and work with it just fine. I can then move it back to the Documents folder.

Here are the errors when trying to open files:
Word - Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges
Excel - 'C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\Book1.xlsx' could not be found
Powerpoint - The path or file name for C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\Presentation1.pptx is invalid.

When I try to use one of these programs to save to the Documents folder, I get the following error:
You don't have permission to save in this location.

I tried copying the files two different ways to eliminate any lingering NTFS permissions. I used a linux box to copy from the old drive to EXT4, then to a linux formatted FAT drive. I plugged this FAT drive into the Windows machine and moved the files over but got the same errors. Next, I copied the files from the old drive to a FAT32 drive using another Windows box. Then I tool the FA... Read more

When I use my IE8 to something like http://myurl/test.txt, IE automatically opens the file in the browser. How can I make it so that IE asks my user to choose either save or open? I have control over the file extension so if needed, I can make it so that it is http://myurl/test.abc in order to make IE to ask, but when I tried that, IE still opens the file in the browser. I confirmed .abc is not a known file extension on my Windows 7 machine. The content of the file is text.

I do not want my users to open and see the content of the file as it is a data file and meaningless to the user. I just want them to save it on their local machine and then use a program to access it.

There seems to be some answer on this for IE before 8, but there is no more option to force IE8 to give me the option to download.

Any help?

A:How to force IE8 and later to always ask for to save or open instead of always open

I'm currently on an old machine, so I don't know how it will go on Windows 7, but in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, if you scroll past the large types of files, where the alphabet starts again, scroll to "exefile" and in Edit Flags, change the D value ending to 00 00.

I'm running 7 home premium.
When I open Windows Explorer or the Save As window, the Documents library or the C: drive or the external drive I JUST had open, is now closed.

It would save me a lot of time and clicking if there were a way to keep it open to the last state it was in.

A:any way to keep "Save as" folder tree open?

need more info
check your drivers
try reinstalling the external drive

Trying to figure out a global issue with are new  Windows 7 image at work in IE.  We have old PC's that we are replacing and on the PC's we are using an updated Windows 7 image but has the same IE 11 version 11.0.9600.18738CO on both images.
The difference though is that there is no security prompt to open PDF files on the old image.  On the new one we get the prompt to Open, save or save-as and trying to find a way to remove it.  Our guy that built the image did not set the Group
Policy intentionally if there is one for this.  I can't find a way to remove the prompt in GPedit.msc, missing the "Launching applications and unsafe file" is missing but yet i see the option under security settings in IE.  The radio buttons
are grayed out from making changes in that window.

Any thoughts?

Hi everybody

I picked up some nasty malware. AVG was updating and suddenly everything just fell apart.

I can't run any installation programs regardless of the extension or name. I've tried to install Rkill and MalwareBytes with absolutely no luck. It defaults to needing to be unblocked in the properties and no matter what compatibility mode I use it will not run. I get a 1084 error when I try to open the security center. In the taskbar I have an Action Center alert that says 1 Important Message and 3 Total Messages. The Action Center will not open at all. I do not have access to a USB key as I am not home, but I will be Tuesday evening. Any help would be infinitely appreciated.

Other notes I forgot: I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, and I am constantly getting errors that Windows can't load and needs to be repaired. It runs and restarts, sometimes being repaired and other times not.

Thanks a lot

A:Action center won't open, Internel Explorer only browser that will open, no MalwareBytes and RKill will not open

An update.

I've tried running MalwareBytes and RKill from a flash drive which is also not working. Windows also ends up unable to load, the startup repair runs and things work fine. Not long after Windows tries to update and then it becomes unable to load again and the startup repair runs again.

I tried running a registry fix for the .exe problem and I get an error stating that the registry is being used even when no programs are running and I am in safe mode.

Hope this information helps

Hi Tech Guys,

We are all clue-less at work. Some PCs have the option of opening a .tif without having to save it first. I use to have that option and I want it back.

The first time I came across a .tif, a pop up would ask me if I wanted to open it at its source and then never again ask me again. Afterwards, the next .tif attachment I clicked it would open the same silze as the one before without having to stop and save it first.

Was it something I did ?

Thank you.

A:Can't open - Can't save

With Excel closed, make sure it's also not running in your task list.

Hit Start-Run and type:

And hit enter. Browse to the folder below:

Right-click the Excel folder and rename it to OldExcel.

Relaunch Excel. If that doesn't work, search for the XLSTART folder and make sure there's nothing in it (remove or delete the contents).

Let me know...

Hi guys

Just to get it out of the way, I have already searched the forum for help (and the web),
and I already found a thread in here explaining what to do
write techspot.com in front of /vb/all/windows/t-5750-Access-denied-to-a-folder-merged-with-Partition-Magic.html
(i can't post links because i'm new here)

But, I can't find the freakin' security settings in Partition Magic

I've been looking through them all "general, view, disk, tools and so on"
but anything saying security I cannot find.
Is it me or my partition magic that retarded :-S

I have to admit it's a craked version, but it didn't complain about anything when I typed the serial just -
"thanks for using partition magic and so on"

When I try to access the merged folder this is what comes up
F:\g is not accessible. Access denied.
The same thing a unformattede harddrive would say.
So is it still a security thing?
Or is it my partion magic that needs changing?

Please forgive my newbi-ways

i'm using XP home edition (from dell) if that helps

A:Folder problem with Partition Magic, can't open merged files/folder.

Although your issue may be easily resolved

TechSpot cannot help with cracked software - as the cracked software may be faulty itself.
Let alone the legal issues

I have one folder in which I keep all my music. There are 605 items, consisting of both folders and music files.
I sort the folder by "date last saved" so that my newest songs are always at the bottom and the oldest are at the top, after the sub folders

However, whenever I open the folder, windows seems like it is re-searching and rebuilding the cache, taking upwards of 5 seconds in order for the folder to be sorted again.

This only started happening after I reinstalled windows, however that is all that has changed. My music is on another drive, the same drive that it was before I reinstalled.

Why does it keep doing this, and how do I get it to remember how it is sorted?

Attached is a video demonstrating what happens
