Preferred Solution: solid taskbar

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've searched everywhere for the answer to this!! I can't believe this isn't bothering anone else?

I love the translucent look of windows, but when I have a window in full screen mode, I want the taskbar to be solid!! this was standard in vista! A translucent taskbar and frame makes it look like the window you're using isn't full screen, and I see I get drawn to it every time! hate it (the only thing I hate so far!).

Any ideas anybody? I know I can make it solid all the time, but thats not what I want either, I just want it to turn solid when a program is in full screen.

Please help me on this one!!

Hi and welcome.

I agree with you and my wife wanted it back to a solid blue.
OK here is the steps
1. Right mouse on Desktop and select Personalize.
2. Select Windows Color at the bottom of the screen.
3. Uncheck the Enable Transparency.
4. Make sure you select the color you want. I still like dark blue and make sure you Color inensity is about 75%

Hopefully that does it for you.

Hello all,

First of all I'd like to thank you for letting me join this forum. I appreciate it.

OK so on to my problem and question. I set my taskbar to be along the top of my monitor screen. It seems like ever since WinXP and probably before that, some windows that open creep under the taskbar. So when this happens, I have to move my taskbar in order to close the window. Yeah I know there's other ways to close this window without moving the taskbar, but another more elegant way to avoid this problem is make the taskbar solid so the window can't creep under the it.

Does anyone know what I have to do to avoid this annoyance?

PS: for clarity sake, the taskbar in question is the bar that is at default on the bottom of a the welcome screen. It would have the start/stop button on it.

I don't have an issue with the way Win7 taskbar looks. I have an issue with the way it works.

Oftentimes a window would open with the taskbar covering its top, and I will not be able to drag it around. Whoever thought "hey, I bet people want to actually see some of the frustrating Windows flaws preventing them from doing the most basic things, so lets make a transparent but impenetrable taskbar and make windows appear under it so people would see them but unable to do anything with em" must've been a saboteur on Apple's payroll.

Anyways - can someone help me resolve this issue? Google shows nothing. Thank you

Best wishes,

I am looking for a new laptop. I currently have a X121e and recall it being extremely easy to configure on Lenovo's site. So I decided to look at the X270. However, having had great difficulty even starting to configure it (apparently, Lenovo does not favour Firefox any longer), I'm currently having trouble understanding the choices. The first is the choice between PCIe and SATA PointingDevice. Following some discussion, I gather this has nothing to do with any kind of pointing device, but affects my HDD/SSD choices. OK, so let's see what the PCIe choices give me. I get 5 'first hard drive' options. (Nothing I do gets me a 'second hard drive' option, so not sure about this. Or rather, I almost understand this now I've read the platform specification, the user manual, the hardware maintenance manual and various posts on Reddit. This references: Quick Launch Bar: icons don't wrap even though there is room - a post by chillz which discovers a "bug" with the taskbar not resetting the row-sizing for toolbars when dragging the taskbar to the left then back to the bottom.

I, for a while now, have been using a custom quick-launch toolbar on my taskbar with the taskbar being 2 unit-lines in height and having the taskbar on my secondary ( left ) monitor. When I first set this up it showed 3 lines of small icons in the toolbar and up to 2 lines on the standard taskbar. This was perfect because the toolbar didn't reset the order every time I launched an application contrary to how the pinned application system works. With pinned applications, no matter what position I drop the icon, the order always resets and floats from place to place so that system of organizing icons is disgusting because you have apps between icons of apps that aren't running some times and other times the running applications are above and below with or without grouping enabled.

The vertical display would be the ideal way for me to view unlaunched applications ( see aforementioned topic ) because they group together and launched apps come after; in horizontal mode the taskbar is chaotic without a toolbar organizing the apps to one side but then you lose the functionality of the pinned-application system ( if you forfeit usage of that chaotic horizontal system in favor of how the vertical system works but in horizontal mod... Hey everyone, i've been having a lot of problems with windows 10. Recently i've had an issue with the taskbar, it started where when i left clicked on a program that i had pinned to it would not show up the menu like it usually does and just does nothing, and later on the start button wouldn't open up at all when i clicked it, now on my main screen (im using a dual screen setup) the left hand side of my taskbar is gone which had the internet access, speakers, notifications, language and date/time plus the show hidden icons and question mark. They are all on my second screen, but none are on my first (main) screen. I've tried using all of the different guides such as

How to fix your Windows 10 Start Menu - BT

and none of them worked, i followed every step, i did the powershell thing and everything else, i even tried make a new account and it was working for about 5-10 minutes and then it did the exact same thing its doing on my main account.

Can anyone please help ? I would really appreciate it

Hey all, my girlfriend is running Win 7 Home... she has always had the default Windows speaker "volume" icon down on her task bar by her clock. She uses it all the time to switch between her speakers and her headset, where she right clicks on the icon and selects "playback devices" and then changes between her soundcard/speakers and her usb headset.

Anyway, it disappeared last night.

Now open Taskbar, click on the "customize" link, get the window to select which icons appear... on the speaker "volume" icon under behaviors, it is set to "show icon and notifications"...

HOWEVER.

Then at the bottom click the link for "turn system icons on or off" and on that window, the icon is greyed out and set to OFF and it can not be changed to ON.

She's been bugging the heck out of me ever since to fix it.

We have no idea what changed it, or how it got changed.... we just know its been there and she's used it, for the past two years, and now its suddenly not there.

Any suggestions?

Is there a method/hack or a 3rd-party program that allows the user to hide the taskbar by dragging its top border line downwards, after un-locking the taskbar? I remember I could do that under Win9x.

A:Drag top border line of taskbar downwards to hide taskbar

Well the autohide feature is still there I actually find it easier to deal with than manually moving it, which often results in accidentally pulling the taskbar to horizontal or something.

So i used IOBit Advanced System Care 5 to tweak some settings and apparently I messed something up lol I have reset them to default but it still does the same I have restarted several times, I haven't tried a system restore yet as that sometimes can cause problems beyond what it's worth, but I am willing to do it if it will help!

As you can see from the picture, when I have a single window open the button in the taskbar is stretched to fill the entire taskbar, if I open 2 they each take up 50% of the task bar and so on. I would like to return to normal sized buttons but I have no idea how to go about that!

Thanks in advanced if anyone can help, and PS I hope this isn't a repeat question I used the search function but the only threads I could seem to find were about stretching the taskbar across multiple monitors which is not what this is abut. so sorry for that if this is a common question

A:Buttons on Taskbar stretch to fill entire Taskbar

Welcome aboard, Charles Darwin Nice name

Advanced System Care 5 makes such a mess is reported earlier, too . First what I am to say you that windows 7 does not need any advanced system care at all . All these programs are not enough able to care windows 7 system. The inbuilt disk cleanup utility and CCleaner is enough for the OS.

Now let us discuss about the fix. If some registry backups are made by Advanced System Care 5 , restore those backups first.

If not fixed yet, follow SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker .

Another idea to fix it may be by applying the System Restore to an earlier date than occurrence of that mess.

If still not fixed, try Taskbar - Change Icon Button Width Size .

At the last point, you can always perform a Repair Install , when no other fixes are working.

Please post back with results

Hello all,
So about a month ago I restarted my computer and when it came back on all my programs pinned to my task bar and everything that was in my start menu was gone. From there I could not unlock the taskbar and nothing would pin in either the start menu or taskbar. I researched everywhere about it. I tried unlocking the taskbar in properties and registry with no luck. I finally found some posts about how my user profile was corrupt and from there I went on and made a new profile and copied everything and BOOM it all worked fine now. Well today it happened AGAIN! I restarted my computer and everything disappeared. So I think it is still a corrupt profile, but this is the second time it has happened. My question is. 1) is there another way to fix those two issues besides creating a new profile? and 2) What could be the cause of this happening twice in a month. Would a reformat fix it or is it a hardware issue?

ADD: I forgot to mention my outlook email profiles are gone too. Those somehow got erased as well.

One of this days i will buy my first solid state drive.
So i need an expert advice, especially from someone who already has ssd.
First : Most of all worries me the compatibility issue with my GA-X38-DS4 motherboard,i don't want to throw the money for nothing. And i didn't found anything in the web about this.
--------------------------------------------
Second: IF IS NOT THERE ANY COMPATIBILITY ISSUE!! Then....Which one is better, faster?
A) Corsair Force Series F80A - solid state drive - 80 GB - SATA-300
B) OCZ Agility 2 Series - Solid state drive - 80 GB - internal - 2.5" - SATA-300
C) OCZ Vertex 2 Series - Solid state drive - 80 GB - internal - 2.5" - SATA-300

A:My first solid state.

As long as you have SATA ports on your motherboard, SSD drives will work.

Faster is often a result of which benchmark you used. The biggest bang for the buck with any SSD is it's 0.1ms access times to files anywhere on the drive. You will get that from any of the SSD's that you pick. Your read/write speeds may be marginally better on one drive versus another, but unless you are continously reading and writing large files...it probably won't be noticeable in day-to-day computer use.

Personally, I think OCZ has a great reputation and the Vertex 2 line has been solid. I would pick that one if it were me.

Does anyone in here still use SE v12 or at least HAVE used it and might be able to offer up some assitance with it.
I have a 3ghz/1gb/matrox parhelia128 computer that runs it great for the most part, whenever i go to rotate the 3d model, after say 20 seconds of rotating it sorta just freezes for a second or 4
sometimes for longer.
our support for SE is nonexistant and the phone service is giving me the run around, so getting an update is just about short of impossible. how is v16?

Is it backward compatible? If i use v12 to make something, and have someone using 16 open it, would it cause problems for the document?

A:Solid Edge V12

I'm sorry I can't help you with your problem, but I found this thread through Google, and I'd like to ask a question about a problem of my own, which is a bit similar to yours...
I just started at Helsinki University of Technology and I have a machine design course where we use Solid Edge v15... The university has an academic license for it and they are giving it for the students to borrow home so they don't have to use campus computers to do their works for that course. I borrowed it, of course, but it says it won't install, cause the program is for win2000 or XP only... I have windows 98...
Does anyone know what is the latest version of SE that supports windows 98?
And if so, I repeat the question of the previous poster: Does v15 have backward compatibility? We're not using very advanced features, so I think I might be able to do my work with an older version...

Ive been looking at PC parts for about a year now, so I know at this point about which parts (mostly CPUS and GPUS) are which and when the next gens come out (like how piledriver comes next month presumeably)
But I cant justify $650 without being rather certain of myself.
so here is the parts list:
Rosewill challenger U3
Crucial 8 GB DDR3 1600 Dual channel 240 pin
FX-8120
Cooler Master hyper 212 EVO
Samsung Spinpoint F4 7200 RPM 320 GB (its cheap right now, althought seagate=meh hopefully I wont have bad luck)
Sapphire 2GB 7850 100355L
Rosewill green series 630W RG630-S12 (will update if/when I crossfire later on)
MSI 970A-G46 (chipset 970, has x16 and x8 in xfire mode)
some cheap wireless thing already got.

I already have all peripherals.
total price is $665 with shipping.

so yea, thats about it.

A:Solid build?

Looks good, but on a bit of a prejudiced note, you may want to look at getting a different power supply, since Rosewill don't have the greatest track record when it comes to PSUs. Also that case is a nightmare to try get clean, so If you don't want the amazon jungle inside your case I highly suggest you take a look at some of Antec or Coolermaster's budget cases.
apart from that, the rest looks good to me.

Had a major malfunction with my laptop over the weekend and had to replace the harddrive.. lost a few things but I had backups on an external hdd thankfully. One thing I noticed during the whole situation was that my system restore points had been deleted somehow, I researched and found that Defraggler deletes them sometimes, but who knows it could have been something else.

I'm looking for a good defrag program that won't do that.. I noticed Auslogics Disk Defrag in the stickied topics up top but just wanted to ask and make sure it doesn't do anything like that. Also I want a really good backup program. I was using the default backup thing on Vista (set to backup once a week) but when I check my external hdd, there are backups from last year hogging up space..

If anyone has any advice I'd appreciate it

I use Auslogics and am 100% happy with its performance. You can analyze your HD first to see if a defrag is necessary. Its does a better job than the Vista program included as defrag with the OS.

Hi, I am working on a laptop with Win 7 x64 Home Premium, SP1.

It was recently pretty badly infected, but has been thoroughly cleaned, and all additional bloatware uninstalled.

I am unable to unlock the taskbar, nor able to pin any shortcuts to it. There's also a strange folder that keeps appearing on the desktop, called %localappdata%, with a subfolder called 'elevatedDiagnostics'.

I enabled gpedit.msc. I have tried using the sevenforums supplied bat file to restore all Group Policies, to no avail. I searched inside of gpedit to the location that controls the locking of the taskbar, and it appears normal, as 'not configured', as are all the other entries under 'start menu and taskbar'.

I am trying to repair this without doing a full re-install of windows. I'd actually rather know *why* this is happening, and fix it manually.

thanks for any help!

A:Can't unlock Taskbar, Can't Pin to Taskbar, odd folder on desktop.

It often isn't enough to clean up a badly infected PC so I would strongly consider doing a Clean Reinstall Windows 7 especially if this is factory-installed Win7 which is the worst install of Win7 one can have anyway.

Otherwise run a full scan with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware followed by SFC /SCANNOW Command.

My problem is specific to the unpinned icons in Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit. The pinned applications stay put just fine. This problem started a couple of days ago.

It seems that, when I have multiple unpinned applications open, sometimes the icons of the unpinned applications move around at random times (it seems that the last active unpinned application moves to the right even though it wasn't the program opened last). And sometimes, when I have only one unpinned application on the taskbar, its icon seems to move from some slot to its right back in its position.

For some reason I suspect some malware or virus may be the cause.

I tried uninstalling ATI Radeon HD6450 drivers and reverting to an older version, as well as uninstalling every program that was installed since the day the problem started, to no avail. I found four malware in the meantime but even removing said malware did not solve my problem.

I don't think it's malware. If it's any consolation, my machine at work does this occasionally, and it's clean. I don't know what's causing it, but I've just chalked it up to being a quirk in Windows.

Hey !

I have a problem with Win 7...

When i move my mouse from the taskbare and to another place. The taskbar text is still showned

Is there a howto on getting this solved, or can i disable it from displaying the text ?

A:Taskbar shows text when the mouse is not on the taskbar

Most likely the application is the one at fault that is causing that to happen.

If you are beginning to get bored with looking at the same plain taskbar in Windows, here is an app, with which you can add textures to the Windows 7 taskbar.

I have a client that has laptop with windows 7 Pro. He had a faulty network card, so I have added a new, usb network card. That said, He can not pin anything to taskbar or start menu. I cleared both folders of shortcuts(567 of them) but to no avail. He also has no options under his desktop Context menu for New. He is also using a roaming profile, of which I will disable next time I am there. I have a feeling that might be the issue. I did scour the internet trying all the usual suggestions, but do vaguely remember something about an entry in cache somewhere that if it is too big or corrupt, it could cause this behavior. I am unable to find that post anywhere now. Any thoughts? I would appreciate it. I mention the network card because one post had taskbar issues until he disabled his faulty network card. I have disabled the faulty network card.

A:Cannot pin to taskbar, start menu or unlock taskbar

Theres also settings in the performance options that can affect the ability to pin things to the taskbar at least. Have you ran a sfc/scannow on this machine?

Welcome to the forums btw.

Hello,
Actually I saw something named solid keylogger when my antivirus software was running a scan but it didn't detect it because most antivirus softwares don't detect keyloggers(I think so). Anyways I don't remember the exact location of that keylogger but its name is "SOLID KEYLOGGER" exactly. So if any malware specialists out there know about this keylogger please assist me in removing this keylogger. Thanks in advance.
And also please ask me if you want anymore details about this issue.

Hi all,
Just a quick question - this isnt important etc but

I have an old netbook which I use in my place of work (at lunch times lol) to code my website (Boeing 787 Register - Welcome) I have obtained through my own upgrades at home etc a solid state 120gb Corsair Force.

The machine is running windows 7 64 bit on a 320gb hdd, the used space with all the applications I use and the website testing area is less than 50gb.

My thoughts are to - speed up the netbook and give it bettter battery life by cloning the disk from the current spinning disk to the ssd, and this gives me a good 320gb disk to use as an archive drive.

or should i not bother?

A:Solid State v Spinner

I did and it worked out great!

If you're the type to prefer a seriously minimal desktop—so much so that you choose a solid-color desktop over setting a custom wallpaper—you may be wondering why-oh-why Windows 7 takes so long to boot your machine.

I don't know if you guys already know this but I didn't. This will be a problem for some who think Windows 7 is taking too long to start..........

Personally? I can't think of anything more depressing and somewhat nerdly, than a solid color desktop. But for those who don't share my disdain for such, I'm sure glad there's a fix for the slow booting problem.

Thanks for that post. I'll pass that along to my tech friends.

Maybe Google Sketchup.

Hi all,

Just looking for some advice/experience here.

I manage a fleet of 100 laptops/desktops and I'm pretty new to SSD's working here having never really come across them in my last employment.

Our fleet consists of a few Dell Latitude E6430's that have seemed to be specced with 120GB SSD's. Now the 3 year warranty has just expired and I thought that replacing them with 5 x shiny new Dell E5550's (again with 3y year warranty) was the best idea and cascade the older laptops down to less used/infrequent staff. Same ran, both i5's but slightly bigger screen.

What a bad idea that seemed to be.

The newer laptops seem that much slower and I think that is down to the fact they have spinning drives. Everything from slower boot to waiting for Outlook 2013 to 'process' to icons showing on the desktop. They aren't that bad really but its noticeable against the older SSD equipped laptops.

I'm sort of hooked of the SSD thing now and that spinning disks are cack. I've bought a 120GB Kingston SSD and saved a almost chucked C2D Optiplex, unbelievable how it performs now.

So what next, as laptops are due replacement at 5 years do I just get it an SSD/new battery upgrade and see them out another 3 years?

Confused now, cant turn back the E5550 purchase (that's down to experience) but just thinking for the future replacement plan.

I assume a HDD and battery replacement would the main degradation points of a laptop and just view screen problems as they happen.

A:Solid state disks

Hi
Yep adding an ssd's is the best upgrade to any machine really
Any laptop new or old would probably have a 5400rpm hdd in it and yes painfully slow as you're seeing they use them for battery life mostly.
SSD's also cut down on heat production compared to hdd's

We're starting a new Distributor biz that sells to retailers. We're in the process of setting up our home office and would like to start with a good solid platform. I'm not a computer geek and need to avoid constant fixes/virus and spyware scans/etc. I certainly would consider switching OS or going with MAC or whatever, to avoid what seems to be a constant steam of nagging issues. Currently I have XP, Outlook, IE with a likelihood that we'll be using QuickBooks and Customer Manager to manage our biz. My kids are constantly using the computer with AOL IM, Internet games, etc.

Would love your thoughts on best OS/hardware to give us a good solid platform, and suggestions on how to systematically maintain it to avoid problems before they happen. Should we set up a separate CPU just for the biz (no kids allowed)?

A:Solved: Solid OS/HW/etc. for small biz?

First thing is have a separate computer for the kids and there games, the computer for the business should be for business only. The next thing is you want to do is contact the Better Business and find out about Computer Advisors so you can have the correct computer setup with the security and protection that you need. There is nothing worse than finding out all of everything has been hacked on you and that is bad.

hi all
i am thinking of using a solid state drive for the operating system and would be grateful for any advice can i keep the drive i have now with win 7 home premium, and install another windows 7 (like ultimate): on the solid state drive??

A:Solid state drives

I don't think you can have two instances of Windows using the same license key, even on the same machine (unless you clone them, but then the drives should be identical). So basically you'll have to buy another copy of Windows. Other than that, SSD will make your machine way faster. the only catch is the limited number of write cycles, so I would follow the by now standard advice of moving your cache and temp folders to a RAM disk.

Hi I had my computer in sleep mode for a while. I was in a hurry and when I went to use it, it froze. I held the power button down to shut it off. When I booted it back up. I get the usual hp invent startup screen, followed by a windows error recovery screen with options of launch startup repair or start windows normally. After either choice I get a "windows is loading files.." bar and then after, I get the usual black screen with green loading bar. After that it goes to a solid light blue screen with just the mouse pointer on it. It doesnt do anything after this. Its stuck on this screen.

Im running Vista home premium and have an hp pavillion media centre PC.

Really need help guys.

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests (located at this link: Hardware Diagnostics ). They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:
