Vista won't connect to intranet - will connect to internet

Q: Vista won't connect to intranet - will connect to internet

My Vista laptop has always connected the home network without a problem. Suddenly it cannot see any of the other computers. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling network cards, checking all the networking settings, etc. I even went to an earlier restore point.

I did a search on this website and tried to follow these directions:

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL - select all and enter

However, it just rapidly scrolled the cmd box and closed.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi!

Hope someone can help. I think I am staring at the obvious, but can't seem to see it!

I have a client that has 7 computers. They are on a router from their DSL server. 5 of the 7 computers are using Windows 98 and 2 are using Windows ME. The computer using Windows 98 can connect to the internet and also see all the other computers on the intranet. The 2 computers using Windows ME can see the computers on the intranet, but I cannot get them to connect to the internet.

They have both have an IP address. Everything appears to be correct and running okay in the device manager. I deleted the IP configuration and added just to double check and the IP address came up okay, etc. I have them programed to search for the IP address and not one assigned.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I just bought this laptop about 10 days ago to use specifically for a writing project separate from my other work laptop. It has Windows 7. It had Google Chrome installed (or maybe my brother installed it upon taking it out of the box.) I have
used IE as my browser on this laptop once or twice, but mostly use Google Chrome. I downloaded some genealogy software I just bought today about an hour or so ago (Family Tree Maker 2012) and noticed that it would not connect to the internet to register- it
kept saying "No internet connection". After trying a few things (allowing the program access through Windows Firewall, checking to make sure that "proxy server" tab was not checked in Internet Settings, disabling some Bing Maps and Windows
Live email accelerators) and finally tried closing Chrome and opening IE to run in background instead. However, IE won't connect - keeps saying "Cant display webpage" although I am definitely connected to internet via wifi. I tried resetting Internet
Explorer...no dice. I've restarted several times. Nothing is working. Any suggestions?
My husband thinks i should uninstall Chrome, which he guesses is causing all the trouble with both IE and the Family Tree software. But I'm afraid that if I uninstall Chrome and it doesnt work, i wont be able to get back on the internet since I can presently
only do so through Chrome.

A:IE won't connect to internet, but Chrome is working fine. Other software wont connect to internet either.

Uninstalling Chrome should not be nessesary it does have an agressive default install which should not be used but uninstalling will not fix any issues because chromes uninstall will not change
setting back the way they were before you installed it/ or who ever.
Reset ie9 manually,
Click the Start button on the Taskbar,
Click on Control panel,
Click on Internet options,
Go to the Advanced section,
Click on Reset button on the bottom,
Check the box to Delete personal settings,
Use the recommended setup and install options.

hoping someone can help me and has had this same problem before otherwise i am going to have to try and find another provider which i dont really want to do at the moment...

Please Help... going out of town in a couple weeks woudl like to have my internet working on my laptop...

A:Netscape Connect (old Walmart Connect)and Windows Vista

Hi. . .

Good idea on starting your own thread as this means that all found within pertains to your system and your particular system only.

I am unfamiliar with the "Netscape connect (Old Walmart Connect).

Please elaborate in as much detail as possible and I will gladly look into it.

I can tell you that Netscape is now a subsidiary of AOL and that all support for the Netscape browser ceased on March 1, 2008.

Is this a dial-up connection? The CD you mention - what year is it from and have you found any Internet links to it that would provide me with a copy of it so that I may test it to ascertain the problems you are having?

What is it that this software does for you that connecting via wireless to the Internet does not? I ask as a distant family member recently asked me for help w/AOL dial-up as they were under the impression that it was needed to access their AOL which is not true at all. I showed them that they simply had to enter AOL.com under IE7 or Firefox (while connected to the Internet - via wifi or Ethernet) and then were able to access their AOL email account.

Have a USB wireless WiFi unit. To connect to the Internet. Have to disable the Local Area Connection. When connected to the Internet. If I enable the Local Area Connection. Unable to connect to the Internet. When I disable the LAC, the Internet connection is restablished. Using a D-Link boradband VPN router.

A:Wireless Network Connection will only connect to Internet if Lcl Area Connect disable

sounds about right! Your big issue will be the VPN, as it is frequently specifically
config'd to use a specific adaptor AND to force all tcp traffic thru that connection,
even though you want to do some trivial google.com search.

Consider using a Hardware Profile to define
1) a LAN connection environment (ie no WiFi)
2) a WiFi environment (w/o a LAN)

the choice occurs at boot time and the hardware is enabled/disabled per
the profile.

Just got off the phone with Verizon. They had me push the reset button and I was able to connect to the internet again. I mentioned how slow it takes for pages to load. She said if I have two firewalls running that can happen, then eventually it blocks your internet connection. I have the free Avira and am only using the Windows Firewall. She said the Verizon router has a firewall but it's a low security. So I went on the internet was able to get on some sites, but then others wouldn't connect again, said there is no internet connection. All the lights on the router are on. So far it's still working, but this is what happened before when I lost my connection completely.

I have Windows XP, tried it both on IE 8 and Firefox. The router is an Actiontec MI42WR. The problem was with both my desktop and laptop wired connections.

I have a lenovo u160 running windows 7, a couple of days ago it seemed my computer was infected with something, giving a series of security warnings I had not seen before (not av security suite). It slowed the computer down for a few minutes.

After closing these messages, there seemed to be no problem, but then my computer was no longer connect to the internet. It connects to our router/wireless network, but not to the internet.

I tried resetting and unplugging the router and the modem, but still no luck. We have two other computers on the same network that are connecting to both the network and the internet.

I tried running rkill and malwarebytes twice and no malicious items were detected.

I restored the computer to an earlier point (2-3 days earlier)

On the toolbar in the bottom right of the taskbar, it shows a 5 white signal bars, with a "!" inside a yellow triangle.
If I click on the network button it states it is "connected" to the network. It describes the connection as "excellent" (4-5/5 bars).

Above the display of the available networks, it states

"currently connected to:
Unidentified network
No Internet access"

I am not computer savvy and have not run into this problem before. Thanks for your time and help.

Hello everyone.

I would like to connect to the internet using my Linksys WRT54GS 1.1 router. However, even after I reset the router by pressing the reset button for 30 seconds, and plug the ethernet from the cable modem to the router, I can get only to the 192.168.1.1 (Setup) page, not to any internet.

The same cord and cable modem work with my Airport Express, but I want my WRT54GS router to connect wired to the modem, so I can use my AirPort to extend the network (i.e. I want two hotspots).

Any help?

If it is a modem only you need to power cycle (unplug for 30 seconds) it when switching the device connected to it.

Hello guys,

I have just finished my very first computer build and am rather happy with most things.

Unfortunately I am having problems connecting to the internet.

I have a temporary dongle in place and because it's my only option for about a month I kinda need it to work.

When I first connected it I found my connection and I successfully connected, I downloaded Google Chrome and Steam, then unfortunately it randomly stopped working.

Where the strength bar should of been, there was a large red cross, when I found my connection it read "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network." I Googled this and people said delete your connection and reconnect, that didn't work, so then I tried to set my security type to something different or off as recommended in a solved post, the problem persisted.

Now after restarting my computer several times it sometimes rejects my password, or comes up with the "the settings for the network..." and on rare occasions it connects then 5 minutes later comes up wit my original problem.

I have tried resetting my connection details as what is saved on my laptop and mac and they don't work either.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Regards, Lee.

this is a problem adapter on vista whenever a change is made

Have a read through the following - the most common fix is the driver update - from the manufacturers website or from the atheros website

Atheros Wireless Adapter - AR5007EG & AR5007

Over the last couple of years we have been seeing a lot of problems with the above adapters, mainly concerning WPA and WPA2 encryption and mainly on windows Vista.
We have seen just a couple of issues on other windows operating system, windows XP and windows 7.

Windows XP:- A driver update has resolved the issue
Windows 7 :- No conclusive results for a fix

The wireless adapter gets an IP configuration, and shows as connected, but communication is non-existent or sporadic.

Log into the Router and disable the wireless security and see if you are now able to connect to the internet and surf OK.
Please post back a reply here, and let us know if that works or does not work.
If you post back the make and exact model of the router - we can advise how to disable the wireless security

Try checking out your router setup it may be blocking those programs. My browser is IE8. Window XP Home with SP2 (Sony VAIO Desktop PCV-RS420, Pentium-4, 2.8 Ghz, 512MB Ram). I am now unable to connect to the Internet. The network diagnostic for window XP kept saying to check firewall settings for HTTP(port 80), HTTPS(port 443), and FTP (port 21).  I don't know how to do that. I open the Window firewall settings on the Security Center page (Exception tab), it lists programs and services on the "Exception", ie, to not block incoming network connection from these programs or services, which include "Internet Explorer",on the list, which seems to be appropriate.  But my computer still will not connect to the Internet--very frustrating.  I  have done "System Restore" a few times to an earlier dates, thinking maybe the computer picked up some virus and the System restore function should temporarily resolve that issue.  But still no luck.   Finally, I tried connecting to a secured website with "HTTPS" in the address bar and the computer appeared to be successful to connect to these HTTPS sites, but it continued to refuse to connect to a regular website(i.e. with "HTTP" in its address bar).  Please help me resove these internet connection issues I would vey much appreciate.

May have nothing to do with your problem...but you really need to install SP3 and all critical updates since its issuance...that may take care of your problem, but even if it doesn't...your system will be less vulnerable.

Installing or reinstalling SP3... has been known to overcome various previous system problems.

Sounds to me like corruption affecting non-secure websites, so you may also want to reinstall IE8.

I bought a new Dell computer and then got another brand new dell that they replaced for free because they thought something was wrong with it. I returned that one and bought a brand new HP that i still have currently, all have/had Windows VISTA...

After being on the phone for hours and hours with Microsoft, Comcast and Dell, there still hasnt been anyone that can resolve the issues...

I have a Motorola modem thats connect by ethernet cable to a D-Link wireless router, but is only used as a medium to connect multiple computers to that motorola router through ethernet cables.

The connection is good given that i'm typing from my old computer with Windows XP. Plug and play and the internet works no issues.

Can this be an issue with the Modem or D-link router? Ethenet Cable? I can not think of anything else and with the Dell computer(s), microsoft and dell tried everything physically possible to try to un-install Vista, do this and do that with everything. Comcast did say that all their modems are Vista friendly and i even tried directly plugging the ethernet cable from the modem to the computer, bypassing the router and that didnt work. One comment that was made was that i had a bad IP address, which they tried to fix and that didnt work either. Please someone help me! Or im going to have to go with a brand new computer that has XP and not Vista. THANKS!

can we see the following info

------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
Next

Running Vista Home Premium 32-bit. Suddenly cannot connect to internet via wireless. Still able to connect via hard wire cat 5 connection. Have run virus scans, did DNS flush, deleted all temporary internet files, ran ccleaner--nothing seems to work! Why can I connect to the internet via hard wire but not wireless? I can connect to the wireless router, but it says "local connection only" on the taskbar network icon. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Hi all,

I've recently started having some odd issues with one of my computers connecting to the internet on my linksys wireless-n router from my pc. When I enter in the security settings correctly for the network I have setup here at home, it says "The wireless network security key is not correct."

But I know it is, and I have confirmed on my laptop (which is using the correct settings and is having no issues at all, it's what I'm posting this with) the settings are correct. It has the correct 'Security type (wpa2-personal)', encryption type (aes), and network security key. I have restarted the pc computer and reset the router from factory settings many times, all to no avail. I've used several different linksys wireless adapters and usb slots, and it keeps on with the same issue. Kind of odd thing is, when I change the security type on my computer settings to wpa personal from wpa2 personal, and encryption type to tkip from aes, and enter the passcode correctly, it will connect to the network but with no internet access, local only.

I've also connected to the wireless routers setup page (192.168.1.1.) from the laptop and confirmed settings. When I am able to connect from the pc when I change the settings and it gives me local access, I am still unable to the routers setup (192.168.1.1), so I dont know if I'm actually even connected locally when it says I am.

Also, the signal strength from the network is Excellent (full b... Read more

Try holding down the reset button on the router for 45 seconds.

This will reset the settings on the wireless network and should allow you access.

You'll have to re-configure your encryption or any other settings after this though.

Hello there, recently a Vista computer that I have been working on is completely unable to connect to the internet. I've tried just about everything. Running multiple virus scanners (AVG, avast!, Malwarebytes), various fix it programs (Microsoft Fix IT, ComboFix). But I've had absolutely no luck in fixing this problem.

I have no idea what could be causing this, my best guess would be a virus or root kit of some sort, seeing as the machine was brutally infected before. I ran several programs to delete them and got rid of most of them. However, since doing this, I have been completely unable to connect to the internet.

The internet is working and all (I'm posting this from my laptop connected to it), but the computer itself just wont establish a connection. I've tried to manually set up connections, but no matter what I try, it just won't seem to recognize that I have an ethernet cable with an internet connection plugged into the back of it.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, who knows, I'm not completely sure how to set up a connection, seeing as 95% of the time it recognizes and establishes itself, any help will be appreciated!

The OS is Windows Vista SP2 and I have attached both the combofix and hijackthis logs. I went through the computer with revo uninstaller and deleted a bunch of bloatware and other crap. Please let me know if theres more that should be taken off as well. Thank you!

A:Cannot connect to the internet. (Vista)

When the ethernet cable is plugged in, do you see the ethernet LED/Light - this will help narrow down to whether its the hardware along with trying a different ethernet cable.

If the light is on can you ipconfig /all and post results here.

When I try to connect via ethernet cable it shows limited or no connectivity. I've tried this way straight to my DSL modem and my router and I get the same result. When I use my wireless Linksys USB thing it shows the signal strength and when I try to connect to the network it won't let me and says contact your ISP. Well I've contacted my ISP a few times and the people said my ethernet port is messed up. But there is a little green light coming from it when my ethernet cable is plugged in so I don't think that's the issue. If so I should still be able to connect wirelessly with my USB thing. Now I have even tried formatting both of my hard drives and reinstalling Windows Vista on numerous occasions and this doesn't work either. Hello Everyone or anyone,
I have a Gateway ID58 series with Windows Vista Sp 3 64-bit, had an outdated version of Norton 360 on it when I got it. So no real protection. Vista is running extremely slow, and the only two browsers on the laptop, IE and Chrome, will not connect to the Internet. I get an error message saying Webpage cannot be displayed, I tried the "diagnose connection problem" button, it says there is no trouble with the connection. Itunes updated just fine, so I know the machine knows its connected, but how do I repair the web browsers to recognize the connection?

I installed Advanced System Care Free thinking it might help but know luck. The machine had about every toolbar you can think of installed, I've uninstalled all of them. There were also a couple of shopping site loyalty apps in there, also gone now.

For a side note the Hourglass next to the cursor/pointer is running constantly

Any help is welcome and appreciated greatly.

Do not change the default options on scan resultsSome types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it.Before saving any of your security programs, rename them first. For example, before you save Malwarebytes', rename it to something like MBblah.exe and then click on Save and save it to your desktop. Same thing after you install it. Before running it, rename the main executable file first

Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.

If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Gigalan network with two XP, one W2k one Vista and one Mandriva 2009.1. Zoom x6 router. All work fine except the Vista (business) PC.
Vista WILL connect to the Internet when I drop the ROUTER firewall, but not when it's switched on, although all other PC's work fine. The Vista PC is dual boot and it also works fin in XP mode.

Which ports or protocols does Vista require which other PC's don't?

A:Vista won't connect to Internet

Solved:
Most PC's use ports from 1024 to 5000 for internet browsing (to port 80) It seems Vista uses higher port numbers. Router firewall ports for browsing should be set from 1024 to 65535

I had to reset my Vista desktop to factory settings today and ever since then, I haven't been able to connect to the internet from my Vista desktop. I've got 2 laptops (1 XP and 1 Ubuntu) that are connected flawlessly to my router but I can't seem to get any connection from my desktop. Here's my setup

Modem -> Router -> PCs

From the router, my laptops are connected wireless. But I have an ethernet cord going from my router to my desktop. Before I restored my desktop, it worked fine.

But now, the router won't even light up showing that it sees that it's connected to my desktop via ethernet cord (like it used to in the past).

When I try to connect to a network in the Network and Sharing Center in Vista, it doesn't recognize any network/router. I even turned on network discovery and that's not working.

Please help. I'll be on here until the problem is fixed.

Hello there, I have a slight problem and need a little guidence.
We recently replaced one of our computers and decided that the old one might be worth trying to save. It was running Vista and was extremely slow and had too much garbage on it to do anything. So we reformatted the drive and installed XP. The only problem is that I thought we still had XP drivers on a disc, but can't find it. The computer is connected to the modem via an ethernet cable, but it doesn't recognise the connection. I went into the device manager and it says there is no driver for the ethernet controller. I know that I need to get a driver for it and will have to download it on this computer, but I have no idea of what I need exactly or where to get it. Do I need info from the computer as to what driver I need or are ethernet drivers generic?

Thanks in advance

Hi, I have read through the forums and done some searches but none of the solutions from previous cases have solved my problem. So far, my situation is as follows:
I have two desktops, one running Xp the other Vista, connected through a D-Link DIR-615 router to the internet. Up until a few days ago, both computers could connect to the internet but for some reason could not share files. I changed a few things including the usernames and passwords on both computers, workgroup name and firewall settings and was finally able to share files between the computers. However, while i was doing this, my Vista desktop stopped being able to connect to the internet! The Xp desktop runs fine, and has full internet connectivity. I turned off everything (both computers, router and modem) and then reset it. AT this point my Vista computer could not connect to the LAN at all - it could not 'see' this computer (the one running Xp). I ran the Command Prompt and typed ipconfig /all, and the ip adress was a really random one, the subnet mask was 255.255.0.0, and the default gateway was 0.0.0.0. I tried manually changing the IP address (along with the subnet mask and default gateway) to 192.168.0.199. Now, it can 'see' this computer and can share files with it (and vice-versa), yet it the Network and Sharing Center, it shows that it is connected to an Unidentified network. The only way i can get a proper internet connection is when i plug the Ethernet cable directly into the mod... Read more

Hi, I'm Asuna. I'm having troubles with my Windows Vista computer. The laptop isn't connecting to the internet, but I KNOW my internet is up and working because I'm connected to the internet right now via the laptop I'm using.

I've done everything I could find on the internet. Run a scan through "command", uninstalled Norton, EVERYTHING. I can't find out what's wrong with my computer.

When I click my network button at the taskbar on the bottom of my screen, I get a message saying "You are currently not connected to any networks". It simply won't detect my internet. I've tried switching the wireless wifi link with another, connecting a netgear one to the laptop itself, but none of them seem to work. Can anyone help me? Please! I'll try anything. I've already reinstalled the operating system.

Problem is, even tho the lan or wireless say's I am connected, when I click on the IE9 (only browser I have on here) I get a message saying "the webpage cannot be displayed."
