Preferred Solution: external encrepted harddisk hard disk not initilizing and showing i/o device error

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, sorry if this has been posted before, but I searched so many threads and none of them seem to apply to my exact situation (they all have the usb showing somewhere).

My usb/external hard drive, isn't showing up anywhere. Not in my computer, disk management, device manager or by doing cmb > DISKPART> LIST DISK. The laptop does make a sound when i plug in the drive however but the autoplay doesnt come up, nor can I find it anywhere. I've also tried switching everything off, tried different ports, checked youtube videos, followed lots of different instructions from so many threads, but nothing is seeming to work.

The problem began when I ran a system restore this morning, I then noticed the usb problem and cancelled the restore (to set it back to before the restore was done) but this didn't work. The problem is also the same with the dvd drive. On device manager both the dvd drive 'link' and a usb 'link' both have yellow exclamation marks next to them. Please can someone help me, I would be so unbelievably appreciative and grateful. I have been searching for hours, trying loads of different things but I just can't figure this out. Thanks so much!!

i had an old notebook with an overheating problem that I thought I had fixed, so I transferred all my music and picture files to it. then the problem recurred and the computer won't reboot. So I pulled the hard drive and put it in an enclosure I've used before, and am working through trying to get it recognized by my new notebook as an external hard drive.

Device Manager recognizes the drive and indicates that it is working properly, and it appears in Disk Management as well. However, in Disk Management, it shows as Disk 2; Unknown; Not Initialized. When I attempt to initialize it, I get the error "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

I've tried to initialize it as MBR and GPT, with no luck, and I've checked the device drivers to make sure they're up to date (they are).

What else can I try? I will try anything, but if it's hopeless, I need to know that too. I just don't want to give up if there's a chance!

I have an external hard disk which got corrupted. When i connect the disk through USB it shows as an unknown device in the disk management with no option to format.

In My computer the device is showing as H: drive but unable to access it. It asks if i want to format or not but when i go for format it does not do it. I want to erase the disk completely as of now. What should i do??

I tried to load it from linux but there it shows as Device Error. Disk Failure is Imminent.

Can something be done or is it a hardware failure.

A:External Hard disk showing as RAW in disk management

Sounds like the drive is failing or the circuitry in the enclosure is faulty.

I would first remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up as a slave to a desktop PC. See if you can then access it. If you can, then post back for further instructions with the version of your OS.

Hi horrocks001, and welcome to TSG.

Have you checked the properties of the devices with the yellow exclamation marks to see what Windows says is the nature of the warning?

Have you tried re-installing the drivers for those devices?

In order for anyone here to better assist you, it would help if you told us the brand and model number of the computer and the version of Windows running on it.

I'm currently using a Samsung NP-QX410, and I'm trying to install an external hard drive onto the laptop so that I can backup the data.

The hard drive is a Western Digital Scorpio 750GB
The hard drive enclosure is a Vantec NexStar TX 2.5-Inch SATA (I know it's cheap. That might very well be the problem).

When I plugged in the hard drive into the USB ports (I've tried all of them), the light on the enclosure lights up and I can hear the hard drive spinning. When I look around, I can't find any signs from my laptop that a hard drive has been plugged in (or that anything at all has been plugged in for that matter). After some digging I found out it's suppose to appear in the Disk Management page, then create a partition and do a few other things with it.

My disk Management shows no signs of the hard drive though. All it shows is Disk 0 (the basic disk) and CD-ROM (for DVD's).

To me the problem just looks like I just bought a cheap enclosure, but I'd rather ask to make sure there isn't an obvious step I skipped. If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate some help.

Hey everyone,
I just purchased a new external hard drive for my laptop. I have a Sony vaio, and the hard drive I bought is a Micronet Platinum XL 500gb. I turned it on and it didn't show up in My computer so I went into the disk management and noticed it was not activated. I activated it and then still nothing.

That was obvious because the drive had not been formatted. So I clicked create new partition and started formatting it. All was fine, it was late so I went to bed, got up in the morning to see how it completed and it said that the format was NOT successful. Now it won't show up in My Computer, nor will it show up in Disk Management. Should I just create a WIN98 bootdisk and format it from DOS, or is there something else I can do?

A:External hard drive not showing up in Disk Management

If it won't show up, I don't see how you can format it in DOS.

Anyway, check out Device Manager and tell us more.

Other suggestions:

1. Test your drive on another pc
2. Check your bios settings

good luck

I assume that if you start without the 1TB HD that everything works normally.

If this is true, when you connect the 1TB HD, do you get any indication that you have added new hardware? You should.

Is your connection to the 1TB HD via USB?

Never mind. One of your images shows that the Seagate is recognized. From that, I conclude that the USB interface is good

When I go to open a program I've recently installed, half way through loading I'll get an error message reading:

The drive is not ready for use; its door may be open. Please check drive A: and make sure that a disk is inserted and that the drive door is closed." Cancel, Try Again, and Continue, to which I press continue to.

Then I get "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert disk into drive \Device\Harddisk1\DR1" with Cancel, Try Again, and Continue, to which I press Continue to and another appears but with \Harddisk2\DR2 and so on. After pressing continue to 1 2 3 and 4, the program continues to load fine.

After doing some google searching I see suggestions about renaming the troublesome drive something other than C (apparently this error happens when 2 drives are called C) but there is no drives involved? its just a program, so theres nothing to change, does anyone have any ideas as to why these errors appear? :S

You need an external enclosure with 5 drive bays and that supports RAID JBOD.

But there is no benefit aside from only having a single "drive" and drive letter.

Windows 7
I'm trying to get a definitive statement on how to map event log errors that reference this:
\Device\Harddisk<X>\DR<Y> where X and Y are numbers (not the same)
onto the actual hard disk. My question is: what exactly are X and Y? To be clear: I don't want to know how to run chkdsk. What I would like to know is what X and Y exactly relate to?

Let's look at previous non-answers:

Three "answers" were given in the above thread:

Unplug USB drives until the error goes away. This is a) clearly not a practical answer (especially if you don't have USB drives!). And b) it doesn't answer the question of how the numbering in the event log error relates to the installed drives.

"Y and X are the same". That is just plain wrong.

You could download and run WinObj from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896657.aspx. Under

Plug flash disk A into USB port x. Press F5 to refresh the display.Unplug it.Plug flash disk B into USB port x.Unplug it.Plug flash disk A into USB port x.
WinObj will show you a different value for Y each time.

I have a problem with a new external hard drive I bought. I have an external Western Digital 250G HD. It ran fine for a about 10 minutes, then I started getting an error message when trying to copy files onto the HD:

Cannot copy <filename>: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error

I've set it to be optomized for performance and to enable write caching on the disk.

When I close the message and try to get back into the HD, none of the files that are on there show up.

How can I fix this?!

A:External Hard Drive I/O Device Error

It's a process of eliminating one source at a time.

The following assumes you have experienced no prior problems using your USB ports.

The first thing I would do is remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to a desktop computer where I would run CHKDSK /R. If that is negative, I would download the drive manufacturer's testing utility and check it for fitness. (Some second-rate companies offer no such testing utility.)

If all of that is negative, you have either a bad enclosure or some problem with your USB port.

Hello so this is the issue.

I have win vista x64,sp2.
Toshiba satellite
and a Seagate freeagent goflex 1tb external HD.

I had been using the external for a while. noticed some information wasnt really working properly. I thought I would do a chkdsk.

However, I used Tuneup utilities to perform the thorough chkdsk of my external HD, i figured it would find and fix any bad clusters. WRONG. after 20hrs of waiting. I restarted the PC, and now i cant access any information. The external shows up in "computer" I can open certain folders but after a few mins I cant access anything and i get the I/O device error...

ive tried running chkdsk /r just from the PC in a CMD window. It shows a list of 30-50 files that are "unreadable" and sticks on a certain file at around 6% complete every time.

Ive tried all of seagates suggestions and other then that everyone else just says to run chkdsk on other forums. I really do not want to loose this information at all costs...

any information would be fantastic.

thanks for your help in advance.

A:i/o device error external hard drive please help me anyone

I dont want to cause panic.. but.. I/o errors are normally always related to knackered hardware.. I.e your hard drive.

theres a few things you can try first.

The standard Microsoft protocol is to first check that windows is fully up to date incase youre missing a key upated system file.
Next you could try uninstalling your usb drivers in device manager and reboot. (youll loose control of any usb device plugged in before the reboot).
It might not seem the most logical thing to try but it was suggested to me once and it did the trick for my issue.

Failing that Microsoft q and a also suggests shrinking the partitions if possible using disc manager.

I have a Samsung s2 1tb external hard drive.

Today when I hooked it up to my laptop it would not load. It will shows local F drive when it usually will say samsung Drive.

A pop up box will then appear stating "you need to format drive"

I know if I reformat it I will lose all my data which I will not do.

When I look in device manager it states that the external hard drive is installed.

I attempted to go through start menu and type cmd then F: and it states "The volume does not recognize this system file. Please make sure all required system drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted."

A:Samsung s2 external hard drive not loading showing local disk F drive

With the external drive connected, Go to Disk Management (Start > type: "computer" > click on Computer Management > click on Disk Management)

Determine which disk is the external drive.
If the external drive shows here as a healthy volume, Right click on the large box to the right of the "Disk 1" / "Disk 2" lable and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

If there is nothing but a grey box or "Unallocated Space" next to the disk number then Right click on the disk number (the box) and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

Change the drive letter to anything else > OK.

If you can't do any of the above post back. If you can post a screen shot of the Disk Management window that can help.
Do not initialize the disk or format it or you will lose your data.

I am trying to resolve a problem on my wife's computer. She has been complaining about general slow performance. I have tried the usual maintenance, most recently an update on the Intel 82945G Integrated video chip set. Following the update I got a BSOD warning. I subsequently uninstalled this driver in safe mode and installed the driver that came with the original cd. Now she is getting numerous warnings and errors in Event Viewer including errors detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation and the driver detecting a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\D. There are other problems popping up in read/write operations. The drive and computer are less than a year old. I have the drive partitioned in 3 logical drives with XP installed on the largest primary partition. No problems are detected in Device Manager. Thank you in advance for any suggestions on resolving this issue. She is running an Intel single core Pentium at approx 3.1 GHz with a single SATA2 320 GB hard drive.

After I did this, the laptop gives 20 rapid, low volume beeps whenever I turn power on. 2) Reset BIOS defaults. 3) Reseat hard drive twice.  (Now the one screw is stripped.)4) Looked under Boot Device Options.  Nothing there. 5) Tried hard drive check under UEFI. Both types say NOT INSTALLED. 6) Tried to go into HP Recovery Assistance (F11) but wouldn't come up. I get the Boot Device error again.  I also called Support - I can't believe how hard they make that - but they asked they were no help. I hope someone here can help.  I have work I have to get done. I press F2 and everything works the same and I run though each test, doing the Hard Drive Check first. Firstly, I do a Quick Check and then it says:

I bought an external hard disk (FreeAgent 160GB, Model # ST901603FGE1E1-RK) in February 2008. The purpose is data backups of my PCs (all XP-SP2). Whenever I use this external hard disk (from any of my PCs), there are always a few occurences of the following in Event viewer :-

Type: Warning
Source: Disk
EventID: 51
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging operation

My other external hard disk is a Western Digital (procured about a year ago), and so far, I have not come across any such error message when I use it.

Should I be concerned about this error event in my Seagate FreeAgent? Since this is a data backup device, I am worried.

A:Seagate FreeAgent external hard disk - paging error

You can run a drive diagnostic test on it:

Also consider running CheckDisk on it too
Go to My Computer
Right click the drive
Select Properties-Tools

This quick new hard disk. So sad I cant access it anymore? why this happen?

You can see from the photo MY computer cant even see this driver anymore, so I check on the
- Disk management it said unknown no driver letter too ,Not initialized.
-Click Initialized it said i/o device error

I have try uninstall the device and restart let it install again still the same.
Checking many thread have the same problem, I wonder anyone solve this kind of problem before?
Update the possible cause of it, I believe my external hard disk spoil because my laptop was low battery and suddenly off either it goes Hibernate or off there is no time to read or write in the hard disk.
Then I just unplug the external hard disk.

If you face this situation don't unplug it, turn on the computer back and do a proper remove or shut down everything.

hi all,

i would like to ask you a very basic question:

What is the difference between an external hard disk and an internal hard disk mounted on external enclosure?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure risky in terms of loosing the data?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure reliable to use?

kindly let me know as there is a vast difference in the price of these hard disks. The external hard disk is costing more and if i use internal hard disk in external enclosure price is very much reduced.

my only concern about using internal hard disk in external enclosure is the reliability.

thanks in advance,

I have a Dell XPS 15z laptop, spec. is i7-2640 processor, 8GB memory, 750GB hard drive. The problem is that it often freezes and when restarted it suggests no hard drive, "No boot device found". If I go into the BIOS there is no hard drive, if I boot into the diagnostics screen (F12) and run thr tests on the hard drive it comes up as passed, if I then restart the laptop it will boot into windows 7 Ultimate.
Evertime it freezes it won't boot after a restart unless I run diagnostics then it will start OK.
My thoughts are that it is hard drive, although all tests I have carried out on it suggest its OK, one of the times it booted into windows I ran the Seagate seatools and it was fine.
Anyone any suggestions as to the cause?

A:Laptop hard drive issue -- no boot device found/disk read error

Sorry, message at start is "A disk read error occurred", not sure if that makes any difference to your thoughts.
I reformatted and reloaded the software to see if that made any difference but the problem still persists.

I recently upgraded to Win7 Ultimate (clean install) from XP 3/4 weeks ago, and for the last week or so am having problems accessing my USB external drive (although it worked ok at first).
When I connect the drive to my laptop, after a few seconds I hear a windows sound which tells me that the connection failed. In the meanwhile, the drive light displays solid for a moment but then begins to flash at a constant rate that seems faster than when operating normally and the drive cannot be heard.
I went into device manager and checked the properties for the "unknown device" and it was displaying 'code 28' stating the drivers have not been installed, but the last few evenings (after around a dozen or so attempts over several hours during each evening), the drive is somehow detected and is accessible.
I have also tried the following to try and solve my problem

- uninstalled the drive via device manager when displaying as 'unknown device' and rebooted. upon connecting the drive, windows tries to install the drivers but soon displays an error message stating that the drivers are not available.

- updated the bios to no avail

- went into disk management and refreshed drives to no avail
I also tried googling the device id when the drive shows as unknown (which is 'USB\VID_13FD&PID_1618&REV_0100') which brought up many results which seemed to include the line 'pnpdrivernotfound'
I would appreciate any help that anyone can offer, thanks in advance.

A:seagate usb external hdd - showing as 'unknown device'

Welcome to the Se7en Forums! FrEnZyUK

One suggestion given when buying any new external hard drive or flash drive often when simply being used as a storage device is to first reformat the factory Fat volume to NTFS for making it readily available. In 7 the support for Fat and exFat has returned allowing you to simply go into the Disk Management tool and assign a new drive letter for the drive. This will initialize the drive as part of the process making it available again.

If you have only a small amount of files and data on the drive presently you could simply elect to backup them up and reformat to NTFS while in the Disk Management at the same time as you custom assign a new drive letter. Windows will then remember the new letter that replaces the temp letter assigned when working.

With usb not so much eSata drives that are plugged in and unplugged often that will even be more of a help once a reformat is performed in automatically being reinstalled by Windows upon plugging the drive back in if unplugged at all.

Hi everyone

I've been using this hard drive for a while, and now all of a sudden I cannot access it. Under My Computer, it is referenced by Local Disk (G: ). Usually, it says Seagate Expansion (G: ). When I left or right click on the disk, Windows Explorer freezes. I have tried changing the letter of the drive by using Disk Management, however Disk Management gets stuck while saying "Connecting to Virtual Disk Service...".

Any suggestions on how I can access my hard drive? Data is very important

A:External HDD showing as local disk

I would try another cable first, or another USB port. Chances drive is going bad or already is.

When in the past you disconnect this drive did you use Safely Remove Hardware icon in notification area? If not can damage the partition on the drive. Ever used on a different PC ? Saying local disk does not mean drive is bad, somehow seagate name was erased by incorrect shutdown, windows seeing the drive differently.

Can try Seatools here
Downloads | Seagate Check SMART status of the drive and health. Any way take a screen shot of when plugged in and disk management is open, without trying anything with the drive.

Hi all

I have a 1TB Seagate expansion drive which has started giving me problems. In my computer it is referenced by local disk K: . Usually it is Seagate Expansion K: . I cannot access it,right-clicking on the drive causes explorer to crash. I have tried changing the drive letter but when opening disk management a blank screen comes up with the words "Connecting to virtual disk service". Nothing will show in disk management until the drive is disconnected form the laptop. I downloaded minitool partition wizard and using that I can see all the properties of drive. What should i do because the data is extremely important and sending it to Seagate would be too expensive

A:External HDD showing as local disk

We could give you some ideas but since data is extremely important:
Remove the disk and don't do anything until an expert (like Jumanji) responds.

Hello Everyone-Hoping for some guidance on my son's laptop issue (Pavilion dv6 - LW260UA#ABA). Obviously a dated unit, purchased for when he first went to college, but still worked great, up until recently. The original problem was the fan burnt out, and thus the laptop would not start. I purchased a new fan and installed myself, was fairly easy. Upon starting up the computer, I got the "Harddisk error "Hard Disk1 3F1" error. I ran all of the appropriate tests, and everything, including the Hard Disk Test, came up fine. No errors. I re-booted, and the "Hard Disk1 3F1" error came up again. Re-ran tests, all clear, no errors. At this point, I thought maybe I hadn't put the unit back together correctly following my installing the fan. I took another Pavilion dv6, same exact model with no issues, put this Hard Drive into it, and still get the same message. So at this point, I'm thinking the Hard Drive must be bad after all. Before I gave up, I did find a video online showing how to boot up in a situation like this. When rebooting the computer, I hit ESC, got to the startup menu, selected F9 Boot Device Options, selected Notebook Hard Drive, and voila, it starts up into Windows just fine. Computer works great, not slow, everything functions as normal. BUT when I restart it comes up with the same "Hard Disk1 3F1" error and I have to go through the F9 process to get Windows up. So do I truly have a bad drive (considering it's in a different case than the original...
