Blu-Ray player on Y580 won't play

Q: Blu-Ray player on Y580 won't play

I bought an Ideapad Y580 some years ago and it came with a Blu-Ray player. It worked fine, until not too long ago. Now it can't read Blu-Ray discs, only DVDs. Anyone know the why it doesn't work properly? Are there any drivers or updates I need? Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Blu-Ray player on Y580 won't play

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I do not want to use the pre-installed Toshiba Media Player to play DVD's, I want to use the installed Windows Media Player. I cannot change the default DVD player to WMP in Control Panel as the only options are either Toshiba's or Nero's player.

WMP can play CD's, MP3's etc but cannot even read any DVD in the drive. Anyone got any advice on how to do change this?

That?s very interesting. It cannot play DVDs but you want to use it s default player. ;)
You know what, forget WMP and use something else. I recommend you to test ?VLC player?. It can read all video formats and you don?t need to install some codecs. It is for free.

If you will be happy with it you can set it as default player for video format files.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop (I have to get the specs and exact model number later, I'm posting this from work because I have no internet connection at home) which I mainly use for playing DVDs and games. Up until about a month ago, it would play all of my DVDs just fine; I'd insert the disc, I'd hear the whine of the drive spinning, then two beep-like noises, then the WMPlayer would start playing the DVD. Then for a few of them, it would start whirring, , and make some other noises, then stop whirring, then start again like it's trying to read the disc again, and eventually it would just stop trying. I bought a DVD lens cleaning disc and have used that many times, but it doesn't seem to help much. Strangely, it doesn't seem to be caused by excessive scratching or smudging of the DVDs; I've put in brand-new DVDs straight from the packaging that won't play, but then I'll put in another DVD that has some scratches or smudges on it and it'll play fine every time. Any idea what might be going on? Again, I apologize for the incomplete info: I'll post that when I can. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I captured an AVI file from my DVD player using my video card. My Real Player and Windows Media Player won't place this DVD clip. Someone said I need codecs.
1. what are they?
2. where to get them?
3. how to use that to convert the file to some other format?
4. what formats do Real Player and Windows Media Player support?
4a. Is there another downloadable DVD player that will play the AVI file as is?
5. I also tried to burn this AVI file using Nero but when I tried to drag the file to the proper place, I encountered problems. What could be the issue here?
6. I have been told in another forum that my CD burner can burn a DVD file on DVD media if the format is proper. What format is needed? Is this another codec issue? (Nero says it needs AVI and that is what my file is).

Did you burn the CDs as music CDs or did you burn the song files onto a data CD? Some CD players will only play music CDs while some DVD players will play music files (MP3 , M4A, WMA, etc) burned on a data CD. Some older CD players had problems reading from CD-RW disc.

Ok I installed 2 new DVD Drives one just a rom other RW+-... Well the RW+- came with the works. Nero/ Indeo DVD recorder, Indeo DVD creator/ Nero somthing else/ and something like CD copy 4 or something.. I can't recall.. I'm at work right now... The thing is it won't play DVD movies... everything else works fine.. Music and stuff even video not in DVD format. When you click play it says "failled to create overlay" or something like that. I tried playing it on Win media player... sameproblem... Then it suggests lowering the resolution and or color depth. Although I didn't think that was the prop I did it anyways. Still didn't work. I read somewhere that problem occurs when you don't have DVD decoders... Is is really possible that DVD Player software didn't come with decoders... I thats not the problem what is?

I burnt a video to a disc but it does not work on my DVD player. This may be because of my computer automaticly logging off at 9:00pm while the disc was still burning. Becaus of this, there is a strange green bar at the bottom of the video when it is playing on the menu:

But when watching the movie it's fine. But it will not play in my DVD player.

Besides this issue, I have two questions.

First question, does the automatic logoff by Parental Control interrupt a burning process?

Second question, how do I erase the disc so I can start again? I read that they are burned forever but I also saw posts where it can also erase. I want to erase the disc, otherwise it's a waste of DVD-R's and I'll have to start a completely new one.

A:My DVD-R will not play in my DVD player

First of all could you give me a Name of the Program you are using and also It may be possible that the Burning Process may Be Interrupted but it shouldn't have if you were using Windows DVD Maker when Parental Controls Time Limits have been Reached it will Lock the User until you are allowed keeping all your Open Programs

Now IF You shutdown Your Computer afterwards during the Process because your User Was Locked then the burning would have been Interrupted

Also DVD -R Stands for DVD- Recordable

It can only be Recorded once you can delete Data of off it like a USB Flash Drive but the Space will not have been Recovered so a New DVD Is Required to Burn the DVD Again

Hope This Helps,

A:Can't play DVD in DVD player...

I have seen some DVD players be picky about the brand of blank DVD used and/or the recording speed used to burn the disc. Assuming you are authoring video DVDs, as compared burning video files onto data DVDs, try a slower burning speed with a blank that you have or try another brand. If you burned a DVD+R disc, try burning to a DVD-R disc.

i have a car which plays cd and mp3. i have checked the manual and it definately supports mp3.

i have tried many ways to save the mp3 onto the disk to play in the car cd player, it doesnt play. i have:

- data cd - with mp3 files
- mp3 disk using nero 6

what other way is there i can try? is there another other application that would do it??

i use cd-rw disks to save the mp3. in the manual it says the disk must be ISO 9660 - i have selected that in nero 6, still no luck. any suggestions?

one other thing. on the car cd player, it even says 'MP3' on it, so it must play mp3.

A:Cant play mp3 in car cd player

Try using a CD-R instead of a CD-RW, they generally work better in most players.

Finalize the disc. In Nero this means don't check the box "Allow files to be added later (multisession disc)".

I have burnt an MP3 CD with various artists. Although I have a specific order in burn list, it seems if there is a more than one track from an artist, Vista puts these songs in a folder for that artist on the CD. So I end up with 15 or so folders in alphbetical order, as well as individual tracks for artists that only have one song on compilation.

The problem I have, is that it is not possible to load up CD in DVD player and just hit play.

I have to go into and open each individual folder and select songs for player to play, and as it is alphabetical, it is not the order I want. Artists that only have one song, will automatically play no problems.

All of this takes 15 minutes or more opening folders and adding to playlist for DVD player, just to play an MP3 CD. Is there a way around this, or is it the way it is??

CD plays in order from beginning to end in computer, with no problems.

Cheers all and Happy New Year

I have created a movie using Windows Movie Maker. The file extension is .avi. I have burned the movie to DVD (it's about 3.5GB in size) using Nero 6. The DVD plays fine on my computer but when I try to play it in my DVD player I get a message that it is the wrong type of disc. I admit I don't burn many CDs or DVDs but I have tried everything I can think of and cannot produce a DVD that will play in my player. P.S. the player doesn't have a problem playing DVDs of movies I have purchased or rented.

I am at a loss. Any advice would be appreciated.

PSS Operating system is Windows XP, SP3.

A:DVD won't play in DVD player

Did you create a data DVD? Standalone DVD players are designed to play movie DVD's - these have a very specific file and folder structure. If you look at them in Windows Explorer, you can see folders like VIDEO_TS, AUDIO_TS, and files like .VOB .BUP and .IFO. The format of the videos on those is MPEG-2.*
You should be able to create such DVD's if you pick make movie DVD in the menu (it might ask you to have the files already authored (meaning with the special directory structure, and already converted to MPEG-2) using a DVD authoring program like Nero Vision I think). If you pick data DVD, it will just copy the data without any conversion (no conversion to MPEG-2 nor creation of the special directory structure).
I should note that if you created a movie with Windows Movie Maker, the output should be in Windows Media format (extension .wmv). Did you mean your source (original file) was .avi?

Other notes: Some DVD players can also play VCD's (also special structure, but MPEG-1, and on CD instead of DVD) and SVCD (like VCD's, but MPEG-2), and MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 data files. Newer DVD players can play certain data CD's and DVD's with AVI files encoded in the DivX or Xvid codecs. You can find them with the label "DivX-certified".

One last thought: check the type of media supported by your standalone DVD player. Perhaps you burned a DVD+R when it can only read DVD-R, or vice versa.

That may be the problem, or can possibly cause problems in the future for playback of othe video files. Codecs should only be installed when you need them. Packs should be avoided entirely. What happens is they start "fighting" (for lack of a better term) over which is the prefferrd codec for playback. Files with a WMV extension only require the codecs from MS for playback, once you install any of there media products you should be able to view any WMV file.

First thing I would suggest is reinstalling the player: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/download/download.aspx

Without some more details your question will be hard to answer.

A:Media Player won't play anything!

Here are the series of actions you will need to take in order to reset your media playback settings to their default values (As they should be after a fresh OS install).

You will first need to obtain Zoom Player v3.10 or newer.

Run Zoom Player and open the "Options / Filter Control / Management" tab and click on the "Registered Filter Manager" button.

Select all the filters in the list (highlight the first filter, hold shift and press the End button on the keyboard).
Press on the "Unregister Filters" Button.
Close Zoom Player.
You will now need to re-register the filters that come with the system on a fresh install. To do this, run this batch file.

Use gspot http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ to determine what codecs you need. Zoomplayer can aid in this as well.
Only install and register the codecs you require!
Some codecs play multiple formats and can reduce your need to install extra codecs. Too many codecs playing the same file formats can result in filter errors and stuttering playback, although this can be fixed by editing the registry and adjusting the codec filters merit, it's very difficult to fix. Codec filters go by merit rules, if you have 4 codecs that will play the same file, the one media player chooses to play the file is the one who has a registry entry for the highest merit for that filetype. This system can result in co... Read more

I have some video footage which I want to copy for my mother to play on her TV. It's not protected - it's mine. The disc has a Video_ts folder and an Audio_ts folder.
I don't have enough space on my computer to drag and drop all the vob, bup files etc. I can rip it to mpeg4 but I'm not convinced that's what I should be doing. I read you need to rip to mpeg2.

I have handbrake which will rip but only to mpeg4 and mediacoder which will rip to mpeg2 and xvid, but when I did both, I ended up with two files both called mpeg4 so not sure I'm any further forward.

I have burnaware to burn the dvd but the only setting for DVD video is the video ts and audio ts. I don't know whether mpeg4 should just go into video ts. It's all getting fearfully complicated.
Strange thing is, I'm sure I've made a DVD before with chapters etc. But I now can't recall how I did it...

I don't want to spend forever on this so a brief pointer if possible would be marvellous!

Hi there!
I hope this is in the right section, please excuse me if not.
I've been copying and burning my DVD's for years with no problems. I use DVD Decrypter followed by DVD Shrink coupled with Nero.
Recently I purchased a new computer & the same process does not work, I can only view copied DVD's on my PC not my DVD player.
I haven't changed the brand of blank DVD's I use.
I don't have a new DVD player.
And I'm using the same (newly downloaded) versions of Decrypter/Shrink & Nero.
The only difference is the new computer & Vista rather than XP. Would that cause the issue?
I dropped the burn speed from maximum, to x4, to see if that worked, but to no avail.
I'm at a loss, if any one could help me it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks heaps!

Just upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit. My Media Player in XP played ordinary run-of-the-mill music CDs. My Media Player in Windows 7 64 bit doesn't, even though the help file says it does!?!? Do I need to set something up?

Maybe it's not run automatically when you give a CD at lector. Try to run WMP11 and play CD.

My DVD-ROM is not playing DVD's properly....with any software. I have tried about 5 different DVD softwares to no avail.

DVD's WILL play, however, the picture is BRIGHT WHITE and unremarkable. The audio for the DVD's still functions properly and you can barely make out a picture........it is just BRIGHT WHITE with hints of yellow and orange.

What do I do?????

I have tried updating the driver to no avail. If it is the codecs, why is it happening with every software I try???

A:DVD player does not play properly!!!

have u tried ur dvd drive on anybody else's computer like maybe one of ur friends?? see if ur problem is present in their comp too. i think, some of ur codecs might be corrupt. get this pack and install it: KLite codec Pack. there's a player included with the pack. try playing ur dvd in it.

I am using musicmatch to burn mp3 cds. If I put 20 songs on a mp3 cd, my player will play it. If I put 200 songs on a mp3 cd, my player will try to read it and then fail...it doesn't give a message it just stops trying to read the cd after a few minutes. I haven't found where the cutoff point is i.e. will it play 51 songs but not 52.

It seems like my cd player doesn't have enough processing power to read all 200 tracks. Would it help if I put some songs in folders?

A:MP3 CD won't play in MP3 player if too many tracks

Try it, it's certainly cheap enough to experiment. I can't believe an MP3 player can't deal with a disk full of MP3's, what's the point of using MP3 if it can't handle them?
