Pardon me if my problem sounds little funny.
I have Compaq Presario CQ40, windows 7 laptop.3GB RAM,320 GB Hard Disk.
Since past few days i m facing this problem, whenever i put on my laptop, and when the desktop opens, my laptop hangs in another 1 or 2 minutes. i have tried this around 5-6 times and still there isn't any improvement. i have also tried to set my computer to an earlier restore point, and have done this twice, still no improvement.
Shall i run recovery, i m afraid of data loss.
Can any 1 guide me what could be the cause, and what could be the solution.
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Download VEW (eventviewer) by Vino Rosso http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your desktop
Double click it to start it Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 you will need to right click the file and select Run as administrator and click Continue or Allow at the User Account Control Prompt.
Click the check boxes next to Application and System located under Select log to query on the upper left
Under Select type to list on the right click the boxes next to Error and Warning Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 also click the box next to Critical (not XP).
Under Number or date of events select Number of events and type 20 in the box next to 1 to 20 and click Run
Once it finishes it will display a log file in notepad

Hello, I have a HP Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU Notebook. Currently, Windows Vista is installed on the notebook. I am planning to upgrade the notebook to Windows 7 Professional Edition. However, when I searched for drivers for Windows 7, I did not find any on HP website. I searched as follows: 1. Visited http://support.hp.com/us-en2. Entered Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU Notebook PC in the search box3. Selected Software and Drivers from the left menu4. Clicked Go5. Selected Windows in the Operating system dropdown list6. In the Version dropdown list, I only had two options; Windows Vista (32-bit) and Windows Vista (64-bit). Even selecting one of these options displays:No software or drivers are available for this product with the selected operating system. Please make a different selection, or visit the product homepage. Please tell me the link for installing drivers for this notebook for Windows 7 Professional Edition. Regards,Aziz
Hi, As you can see, no available link for Windows 7. Please run Windows 7 updates FEW TIMES then post back missing driver(s). Regards.Read other 1 answers

First check for all the Win XP drivers for your hardware.
You can check your HP/compaq PC here:

NOTE: Please read this thread fully.
If your Win XP CD, does not support your Sata Controller, you will need to load drivers to uses at F6.
Load Sata Controller drivers with a floppy disk is the best way.

Ever since I've bought this computer (beginning of 2009) my Compaq Presario CQ40 has been extremely slow. I don't really run much software on it, but it takes around 10-15 minutes to start up all processes.
I run Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall as security, but it previously had Trend Micro Internet Security in 2009.
I do Disk Cleanups, a full defrag through CMD and a chkdsk /r but it's still painfully slow.
The CPU fan is nearly always running all of the time, and after a quick Google this seems to be a problem in the Presario?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Everyone, please inform me the driver motherboard for Compaq Presario CQ40-530TU Notebook PC which is compatible with Windows 7 - 32 bit. In HP Website, I only found the driver for Windows Vista (32-64 bit). I really need your help all.
I think most, if not all, of the Vista drivers will work on Windows 7. Actually, when I upgraded a Vista laptop some years ago most of the drivers were included in Windows 7 so you may not need all. Seems like I only needed graphics and wireless driver. How does your Device Manager look?Read other 1 answers
Hi! My computer is Compaq Presario CQ40. It's 8 years old and can only be used when directly plugged in to the electric socket. It's been working fine until last night when it suddenly shut off. At first I thought that maybe the plug was accidentally pulled out from the source but when I tried to plug it in again, the light indicator beside the power supply in the unit itself won't turn on. I tried to unplug and plug the charger adapter but nothing happened. May I know what could have possibly happened? Is there a way for me to check the possibile problem? I know that my laptop is very old, but I still find it very useful and I wish to continue to use it in the future. Hope to hear from you soon.Thank you!
If you are lucky the AC adapter has just died. To understand more, no light comes on the adapter brick when you plug it in the wall and no light comes on next to the AC jack when you plug into the laptop? Where do you live? On an 8 year old laptop you can find a useable "3rd party" charger for a few dollars.Read other 1 answers

I'm trying to repair/reformat a laptop. It's a Compaq laptop, Presario CQ40. It originally had Windows XP but started giving a blue screen. I can't get anything to work now. Windows won't boot, all it gives is a registry error (software/hive). When I try to boot from the Windows XP disc, it starts the XP boot load, but right before it gets to XP Recovery Repair screen, it gives another blue screen. It says "Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C1E524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I don't know what to try. Several internet searches have suggested turning the SATA to Legacy in the BIOS, but I have nothing in the BIOS that relates to SATA. I'm stuck. Please help!
Blue screens can be caused y a couple of failing devices; HDD and RAM are most common. Substituting system components with good ones is a cheap way to solve problems like this. It's easiest to start with the system ram and you can easily eliminate the faulty component that way.

At startup, the Compaq boot screen ( boot, setup, system recovery) options. appears and hangs there for 4 minutes before windows welcome screen loads.
I have tried using msconfig and went through and unchecked everything, just to see. Still have same problem. I contacted HP, however they could offer no help. Anyone out there that can please help with this???
Run System Restore, which enables the system to go back to a date before U had a problem. Everyone forgets about the most popular fix. Is simply running System Restore, which seems to undo just about anything for most folks.
Hello tech guys out there!
I am having this issue with my Compaq Presario R4000. Whenever I have been using my laptop for more than 15-20 min, the ac adapter will not charge propertly. I will keep blinking on the power light as well as the start buttton light. But if I were to turn off the laptop and plug in the AC, it will charge normally again. Any idea what would be causing this issue?
I am thinking it could be motherboard issue that controls the charging but it is really wierd. Anyone had this issue before, please share with me how you resolve it? It might also be the DC port.....
Any comments or suggestion would be appreciated.
BTW, I am also looking for 2gb ram PC 2700 for my laptop. If anyone has these for sale, please email me at [email protected]

I'd like to fix it before trying to format the entire disc....

It seems like you may have bad memory and reinstalling windows will not fix this issue.
What you should try to do is get a copy of MemTest.
Burn it to a CD and check your RAM. Let it test about 3 times, as if it passed 100% once it may not be an accurate result!

My Notebook is HP/Compaq CQ40-323AX. When I seed the windows7, I love it at once. And I have installed win7 to virtual pc. But I want to install win7 to my notebook but not virtuall pc. So some problems occured. It's the driver. Because the win7 was based on the vista, I think it may run well when useing the vista drivers (The drivers were downloaded at www.hp.com.cn)
Who can tell me I can do as I think? It's my thought right?
Or someone can give me a better way!
How is the performance under Vista Ultimate? If you are using Vista Ultimate there should be no problem upgrading or even 'Fresh' installing windows 7.
Yes, a lot of Vista drivers work with Windows 7 (just right-click the setup file and in properties select Compatability for Vista). This works about 90% of the time, if installing build 7068 you may not even need to update your drivers.
NOTE: You will need to backup you existing files (pictured/documents/music/videos etc) and make sure you've got an installation disk for Vista in case the upgrade/install fails.

My brother recently bought a new HP desktop PC so he wants to sell his old laptop (Compaq Presario 700, Windows XP Home Edition) and we both agreed we should do a full restore to completely wipe the hard drive clean to it's original slate and we have the original Compaq ''QuickRestore'' discs and for whatever reason, they're not working. There is three CD's and not a single scratch or mark on any of them. I've tried to run all three on the laptop and the only thing that happens is that the folder containing the discs files on it is what pops up and no actual setup occurs like it says on the little piece of paper that comes with the CD's.
This is what it says....
First, if your Presario Notebook is attached to a Port Replicator (QuikDock), you must turn the power to the computer off, disconnect it from the QuikDock, and plug it into an external power socket. Disconnect any printer cables or other peripherals from the computer before using Quick Restore.
1. Insert the Quick Restore CD (bootable disk) in the CD drive, and press Enter. A WARNING message appears advising that you are attempting to totally reformat your hard drive. Confirm by following the next step.
2. Press 1 and then Enter to continue. The Power Quest Quick Restore Wizard starts copying and uncompressing data to the local hard drive. This process takes approximately 7-10 minutes.
This warning message never appears and none of this ever happens. Does anyone know why... Read more

I recently wanted to install a program which told me i halfway through the installer that i had to have SP3 to run it.
So i googled sp3, went to the microsoft website and downloaded it.
My pc started to do the loop reboot thing thats assicoiated with amd processors..of course i didnt read up on this before i installed it.
So i researched how to fix this problem and came up with alot of different solutions.
I went to go get the xp disk. Inserted it in the drive and pressed F10 upon startup which launched the system recovery thing for compaq. I clicked recover or whatever and it started to do its thing, next thing i know its reinstalled xp...
So im thinking its wiped everything and installed a fresh version of XP which is not the case.
It still shows the programs in the program list but i cant use them and when i look at the C: drive capacity, there is still the same amount taken up and a little bit more, as i had previously before the crash.
Ive kinda worked out that its installed itself over the top of my older xp? but i dont know how to get this back

Hi there...I have another thread related to my Dell Inspiron, I think its fried, I dont have any responses, so I'll try to re-do the hard drive somehow.
This is related to my desktop.
Upon startup, I get an error message the states: "Required System Software Not Installed. Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 is required to continue. This software is available for free download at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/"
I know for a fact that the .Net framework 2.0 IS downloaded and installed on this computer, I checked. As a matter of fact, version 4 is installed as well.
That leads to believe that there must be a virus on this computer. Can one of you fine folks help confirm this?
I've read the forum stickies and have downloaded HiJackThis and have the other 2 notepad things (DDS and ATTACH) saved to my desktop. I'm trying to be somewhat detailed here, but my technical knowledge is lacking.
Does anyone know for certain if you can install windows XP Professional on a Compaq Presario 5441? I was attempting to do a clean install but the setup process continues to fail. At some instances the comp freezes up when copying files over and during others we get a blue screen with various STOP errors including 0x0000000A, 0x00000050, etc.
I think, just from doing some basic research, that the Presario might not have the minimum specifications required to install Windows XP, Professional or otherwise. Check out this link and compare.
I would suggest simply buying a new computer though, seems the presario is a little dated. Do they even offer support for it anymore? I thought since Compaq was bought out they don't support their legacy systems anymore...
Just a little help please.
I've received a used Compaq Presario 1655 with MS Windows 98 upgraded to SE; IE5; 64 MB RAM; 85% system resources free. Yes, it's older than Noah but has an awesome sound; I've done the Compaq diagnostics tests that are in it, and it says all is working well. (This was used by a business; they upgraded and I got this free.)
I need security of course, so when I set up an internet connection (will use my dial up numbers which come with the DSL I use with my 2006 laptop), what is out there for free anti virus, free anti spyware, and free firewall that will work with equipment this old?
When it loads from the off position, a page comes up that says a "SYSTEM.INI" file is missing; it says to reinstall and all that, but when I just press enter, it goes ahead and loads all right. I cannot find what won't work without this file. Is there a resource on the internet where I could reinstall this missing file? I do not have original disk or floppies--just the laptop and the power connections.
Thanks in advance for any help and info,

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)
If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.
However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.
i dont know anything about computers so i will need a detailed explanation and i need to know how to fix it!! it just stays on the compaq screen
Before the problem started was anything added to or installed on the system?
Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.
Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get
the Advanced Options.
Let us know if able to get the system to boot with either option.
Hi, This is now an old laptop, maybe 7 years old, but hardly used and perfectly functioning on Windows 7. However, I want to update it to Windows 10. I believe it is no longer free, but will cost me about £100. My question is - is my laptop compatible with Windows 10. I don't want to buy it over the internet and its not compatible. Many thanks. Hi,Officially I do not think Hp releases any windows 10 drivers. However I have installed win 10 on systems much older than yours and usually it is sufficient to let Microsoft install the drivers for all the devices automatically. Sometimes (rarely) it can be necessary to install drivers from other sources such as the manufacturer of the various devices or drivers released for different computers which have the same device.Anyway you can try to install windows 10 for free initially by downloading it from Microsoft. Create a small partition on your harddrive of about 20 gb and install win 10 in dualboot and see if everything works correctly and then subsequently you can choose to wipe the drive and reinstall Win 10 or delete the win 10 installation and continue with 7.In my opinion win10 will work fine.https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Let me know if you need any further help,DavidRead other 1 answers

I am also concern since i did install win 10 on my cq61-420us. The one concern i do have is my touchpad isnt not scrolling either up and down or side to side. the synaptic drivers that are provided do not work properlyRead other 9 answers
I have a Compaq Presario laptop 2190 Us with Windows XP for home and wish to upgrade to windows 7 home premium. Have purchsed new Windows 7 home premium but error message says installation disc is required, no other changes in my original laptop, do I need another disc?
It is not exactly clear but if this is an install disk for Windows 7, boot to the install disk by changing the boot order and then reboot the PC and then try the install. If you get the same message about an installation disk, or it fails to boot, then you do not have the install disk.Read other 1 answers

Can someone please help me acquire the latest driver for Compaq Presario C767TU FOR WINDOWS XP. I just recently installed Windows XP on my old Compaq Presario C767TU laptop, replacing the Windows Vista which was provided on purchase. I however was uncomfortable with Windows Vista and above (too messy!) and Windows XP is much more easier to deal with, as well as being more comfortable to work on. Yes, I know it isn't supported anymore and has become more vulnerable, but still... Blame it on Microsoft for not continuing to improve Windows XP instead of creating unsightly and infuriating newer OS.If info for such driver cannot be given, then at least tell me the make & model for the chipsets module; more specifically, the graphics chipset module, sound chipset module and the Wireless LAN chipset module. Only driver for those are missing.Thank you to anyone that can help provide information for my plea.Read other answers
I have compaq presario c700 laptop which has windows vista as inbuild OS. Due to many dll issues and corrupted directories , I changed it to windows 7, 3 months back. But my system is very slow and takes too much time. I want to change it to windows xp pro sp3.I learned from the internet that i have to disable sata native support from the BIOS. I did that, but when i try to restart ,the system doesnt ask 'press any key to continue boot....' It just goes blank screen ...nothing happens for hours. I am totally confused ....little help will be very grateful

I bought this laptop which has AMD Turion processor and it comes with 512 mb RAM and Windows Vista OS. Wanted to upgrade the RAM and tried adding Kingston 1gb stick.
After installing the RAM and rebooting, i opened the windows explorer, I see that the window closing button (in red color) gets distorted. If i take the mouse over that button, the red color spills out of the boundary of that button. Generally some icons gets distorted.
If this is the problem with RAM what RAM can i use (Am planning to try using Transcend RAM also).
Or is it the problem with the operating system ?
Is it a good idea to continue using this RAM if the display issue is acceptable ?
It is kind of in the air. Could be the memory, you might want to check and make sure that it is the same speed ect. Or it could be vista. I personally wont buy vista for a couple more months, let them work the bugs out and make more compatible drivers for all my devices. That n it might get cheaper.
i have a compaq presario m2000 laptop pc and it crashed few weeks ago. Thought it was the hard drive so i replaced it but it didnt help. When i power it on the power light is lit up and can hear the cd driver working but then it stops and the screen is black. Screen stays black and wont display anything not even a blue error screen. what is wrong with it?

I'm helping out a friend try to fix his compaq 5280. First he said that upon boot, it did not recognize the c: drive.
I pressed down on the ide cable and it recognized the Quantum HD that was installed.
The problem is that it got stuck in the Windows 98 logo screen, it wouldn't go past this screen.
So I removed the HD from the compaq and installed it in my own rig and it sd that there was a certain file missing and that I should reinstall the windows o/s
I installed windows 2000 and it worked perfectly while installed in my pc. Booted up and entered wndows without any problems.
But when I returned the quantum hd to the compaq, it would start up like any windows 2000 startup begins but as soon as it gets past the windows loading screen, it reboots by itself.
I know it's not the HD or the windows install that's the problem.
Can someone out there lend me a hand to get this compaq up and running?
Thanks in advance.
See if it will boot from the 2000 cd and reinstall it again. Because the pc's are running different mobos, windows needs to install the stuff for that mobo.
