Pavilion G60 black/faint screen issue

Q: Pavilion G60 black/faint screen issue

My screen suddenly went very dark, though I am able to faintly see the HP logo at startup. I've tried plugging it into an external monitor, yet I get nothing. I have now replaced both the backlight and the inverter, yet there is no improvement. Is it possible that I have a software or driver problem? I can see (with a flashlight on the screen), that during the startup process a screen comes up that says something about startup repair. Any ideas??

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

When you plug into an external monitor, are you remembering the key- combination required to set to external monitor that is on your keyboard?

Laptops do not automatically enable a remote display, you must tell it its there.

Also if you have a removeable video card, the card itself may have died, but it sounds to me like the tube or inverter is either wired backwards, or not getting good power. Do you have brightness/darkness key on your keyboard? Usually looks like a circle, half is black, half is white.

Rescently my father's work laptop running Vista Business decided to boot up with a black screen. Very faintly in the background of the black you can just about make out the login screen.

I searched on the Internet to see what the problem is, and believe that we are dealing with a 'Black Screen of Death'?

Anyone able to tell me whats wrong or have any suggestions as to what we can do to resolve the issue?

Hey!

My Dell Inspiron 1100 is over 6 years old at this point, quite the dinosaur. However, I still have a bit of old data I would love to remove before it really bites the dust.

When I boot up the machine, usually the display is clear and bright. However, after no more than a minute the screen goes black and only a faint outline of the desktop remains. What is the problem and what do I need to do to solve it?

Thanks!

A:Dell Inspiron 1100 screen goes black 30 secs after booting up, faint screen outline

Hi

backlights or invertor board is failing (failed).

If there is an external monitor socket on it use a monitor to see the screen and then you can backup your data.

Satellite Pro L40-17H (PSL4BE-00T005EN)

Hello,

I would appreciate some help with the following problem:

SYMPTOMS: Screen is black, but I can see that there is a faint image in the background.
I get a good image in external monitor.

I suspect, _among others_, that there may be a faulty *lid sensor/switch*, but I have been unable to locate it, although I have disassembled the unit.

If somebody knows, please let me have the exact *location* where I should look for the switch.
Thank you

A:Satellite Pro L40: black screen but faint image in the background

> I suspect, among others, that there may be a faulty lid sensor/switch,

No, I don?t think its sensor issue.
I assume the FL inverter is faulty.

The FL inverter controls the backlight of LCD display module.
Therefore this part should be checked and if necessary, it should be replaced.

Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue.http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Yoga-Series/yoga-500-15ibd/downloads/D...I haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... A:Yoga 500 'BLACK SCREEN' - BIOS update: "[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue"

I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

The first line is 1/3rd of the way down from the top, and the second line is 1/3rd of the way up from the bottom. What are these lines? Are they dead scan areas or something?

Greetings, Troubleshooting this type of problem on an "All in One" system is difficult. You have no display so it is not possible to boot in Safe Mode to check for a graphics driver conflict. Possible hardware causes could be: graphics hardware, Memory, Processor and or Motherboard Processor Socket motherboard, Power Supply. Best to have it serviced. Contact HP Service here. You'll need the correct product number. Cheers!

Hi,I wonder if someone can help me:for 3rd time in 6 month I am having the same situation: while working on HP Pavilion 17 screen goes black.OS - Win 10 64bit.When connected to external monitor - everything is fine. What more; if the screen is higlited with a powerful light (as divers torch) it is clear it works normaly. Thus, possible the matrix backlight is the issue.Laptop has already been twice send to service, only to come back working properly for some time (this time - 3 days!!!) and its OS being Win 8.1 - the original OS being bought with.I did try everything: swithc off/battery out/power cable out/push power button on for 60sec - does not help.Question: may it be this HP is NON COMPLIANT with Win10?What I did learn already is HP service is playing strange things - what I get as service description is not what HP does have in the system, and is not what I am communicating to them... Looking for help...a bit tired by this situation Piotr

Hello @Yool, Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!  I have read your post on how your notebook computer is not able to power on, even though it is plugged into the AC adapter, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter! If your computer is powering on, but there is no lights illuminating on the device, I recommend following this document on Computer Starts but Screen Remains Blank (Windows 8). Should the machine not respond at all when the button is pressed, I alternatively suggest this document: Computer does not start (Windows 8). This should help restore the display to your notebook computer. If the issue persists, please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. I had this monitor since 2013 and all of sudden it just went to a black screen in about 2 years. I thought it was the power supply but nothing worked. So just recently I bought a new power supply because I wanted this monitor to work. So I connected it, but the screen is still black I can't go into settings and it doesn't even display the no signal on the screen. I know it is on because the power button is on and the color is white just a solid white no blinking because before when it went out in 2015 the power button was blinking but now it just a solid color. I can click the okay button and all the other buttons to the left of the power button and they go on. My computer detects it because when I go to device manager it shows right there. I downloaded all the drivers. I tried VGA, DVI, and HDMI but nothing seems to work. If you need pictures so you can see it let me know. I even tried to factory reset it with the 10-second method and the 1-minute method but nothing works at all. Please help me I really love this monitor.Thank You.

I have an HP pavilion dv2000. When I turn on the computer it boots, shows me the options and everything, but after the windows symbol shows, the screen goes completely black. Everything works properly if I boot it in safemode, which is how I have been using it lately. I've tried the battery trick, as well as resetting my bios settings. The fact that it works in safemode tells me its not a problem with my video card, or monitor connection. I have also run a virus scanner in safemode.... nothing came up. Any other ideas?

After ugrading to windows 10 my laptop really messed up.  It had worked fine since 2009 except for my son replacing the hardrive and the fan had to be replaced.  I was lucky to have my 16 yr son help out but he is gone 1800 miles away.  I cannot even go back to windows 7 until i get this fixed.  I also had problems with another laptop after upgrade to 10 but after 3 days I finally resolved the problem.  The battery pack has not worked for a long time so I just always used the ac adaptor.  With windows 10 you cannot even hit a function key to go in safe mode. I cannot see anything so I was hoping I would not have to throw away now.  If anyone knows of any solutions could they please offer some advice.  I would greatly appreciate your time and effort.  Thanks so much!  Gigi8.

Hi and welcome. Since it starts in safe mode, you might try taking startup programs out of the picture by using start, run, msconfig, startup tab.

If after removing those it starts normally, work backwards.

Hey, guys!
I have a problem with my HP Pavilion dv2025nr laptop. It is almost year and a half old and recently I noticed that it wouldn't boot up at all. It has done that before, intermittently, but it would finally boot after 3-4 resets from the power switch, like it needed to get warmed up. After last night, now it seems totally dead. And I take good care of it.

The boot looks like this:
The screen is totally black, fans are on, HDD seems to be on(?), all the indicators on top are on, no beeps occur, HDD indicator blinks 3 times(5-6 times if media present in the DVD drive), DVD-drive spins up (if disc inside).

Here's what I've tried so far:
- connecting to external monitor - no success
- battery check - tried to boot with or without it. no change.
- power supply - strange, but computer turns on by itself when I plug in the charger. I think that's not normal.
- HDD check - HDD works fine, I was able to back it up.
- DVD-drive check - read/write indicator blinks the same way and at the same time with the HDD indicator. If a disc is inserted, the blinks are five or six.

An interesting fact is that the computer behaves the same way with the RAM modules and HDD taken out of it(!!). That freaked me out! Indicators blink he same way, no beeps or noises. Nothing.
I've no idea what the problem is.

I highly appreciate your help and concern!
Thank you!

Sometimes electrical components needs to have all power sources removed and reintroduced to work properly.  Try performing a hard reset first, if it doesn't work then we'll move to the next step.  To Perform A Hard Reset Shut down the computer by going to the Start menu and selecting shut down. (If you have no display, hold the power button down for  5 seconds); (if the computer doesn't power on, move to the next step)Disconnect the AC Adapter from the notebook.Remove the battery from the bottom of the notebook.  There will be a switch/button to eject the battery.Wait at least 1 minute with all power sources disconnected.Re-insert the battery and reconnect the AC Adapter and then attempt to power on the notebook.

Hi there @bfeliciano86,  Before I provide troubleshooting documentation, I would like to take a minute to welcome you to the HP Support Community, where you can ask questions, find solutions and get help from others! I will do my absolute best to help you resolve the issue you are having with the black screen on your HP Pavilion x2 Notebook PC.  Note: please make sure that the AC adapter cable is not plugged into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source. It should be directly into a wall outlet. Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues. As silly as it sounds, did you happen to try removing dust from the cooling areas in a notebook?Have you connected the Notebook to an external monitor or TV? If you remove the notebook battery, plug the AC power cable back into the notebook, then turn it on, does it power the Notebook? Do you have any beep codes or blinking LED lights? Have you done a BIOS reset?Have you tried performing a hard reset?Have you tried to see if you can test for hardware failures? If the computer is on, do you hear the fan running? If so, but the display remains blank, please see Computer Starts but Screen Remains Blank. If you require further assistance, I would be more than happy to help! Please just re-post with the information required from above. Pleas... Read more

Description of Problem:

Wanting to do a fresh install of Win7 on a new hard drive and with more RAM, I removed the battery from my laptop and replaced the old HD and RAM with the new ones listed above, taking precautions to avoid electrostatic shock. When I powered my computer back on, all I got was a blank screen, the power and volume lights, and a few seconds of the fan running. No BIOS, no beeps, nothing. The hard drive indicator light showed no activity. I went back to the original hard drive and RAM to the same results. Heres what Ive tried so far:
Tried to start computer with different hard drive and RAM combinations, finally went to no hard drive or RAM.
Removed RAM, hard drive, and battery, held power button for 1 minute, powered on.
Tried starting with and without battery, and with and without AC power cable.
Removed RTC battery for 10 minutes to allow for CMOS to reset.
Plugged laptop into external monitor and started up, nothing appeared on external monitor.
Tried starting computer with Win7 install DVD in drive.
Tried starting computer with bootable ... Read more

The screen on my laptop is black, although the power is clearly on - power light, wifi light, hard drive etc. Have tried all the reset options, attached to another monitor (nothing) and still black. Any thoughts?

A:HP Pavilion TS 14 Sleekbook Black Screen

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Pavilion Touchsmart 14 Sleekbook and getting a blank or black screen on startup. Try performing a hard reset. When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices, and remove memory cards from the card reader slot. Disconnect all non-essential devices. If that does not help try to turn on the computer you start to press F11 repeatedly till the menu opens. You can also do a system restore. Hope this is helpful.  Thanks.

Product name: HP Pavilion DM4 Notebook PCProduct number: LS721EA#ABU I tihnk it is 64-Bit but I am unsure. I upgraded to Windows 10 about 4 months ago.  Hello, I have an HP Pavilion DM4. When I tried booting up this weekend I got a black screen with a flashing white line in the top left hand corner. In the bottom left hand corner I had a message "Press Esc Key for the Start Menu". I tried a hard reset and the caps lock LED button comes on. I have since run the system diagnostics test and the Start-up Test, Run-in Test, Memory Test and Tune up failed. The description for each one is Memory module. The error code is as follows: Tune Up: 64RHWW-5MV85J-XD6V5G-401MO3All others: 64RHWW-5MV85H-XD6V5G-400503 The hard disk abd battery tests passed. I reseated the memory module but that hasn't made any difference (It was positioned correctly when I took it out) Can anyone recommend what I should do next? ThanksSimon

Hey there, first post ever so please tell me if I'm doing anything incorrectly; My laptop is a HP Pavilion G6-2208au, as specified in title. Whenever I remove the battery charger, while the battery is in the laptop, the screen goes Black (not just dark - completely black), the fan then spins very fast, and plugging the charger back in does not fix the issue either. Laptop must be hard reset by holding down power button after this.IN ADDITION to this, if I try to start the laptop up only on battery power, it gets to the Windows OS loading screen and then also does the above, (black screen, fan spins fast, laptop freezes, must be reset/turned off).I currently have Windows 7 Professional (32-bit) running on it. I just installed this 2 days ago, and for the first 24 hours the battery was working perfectly fine for the first time EVER, in fact I specifically tested this issue out because while this same laptop was previously running Windows 8 and Windows 10 (throughout it's 5 year lifespan), it had this exact same issue. A big one at that.My only guess is that one of the Windows updates (through the Windows Updater) is responsible for this because as I said, for the first 24 hours of installing Windows 7 Professional the battery had no problems for the first time in the laptop's life. Only after I installed a very large number of Windows updates did this start happening - which is why it's my only educated guess. I cannot be sure though, and wouldn't have a clue which update it mig... Read more

Hi Guys,

Im having some trouble with my HP pavilion 17-e049wm laptop (with self installed 7) where I push the power button but the primary screen does not come on. It used to happen intermittently in between reboots. Then it got to the point were I would have to push the power button on and off about 5 times to get the monitor to come up. Now it just doesn't come up. What is funny is if I can get the monitor to work during boot, it will never stop working and I can use the computer. A temporary solution was to never shut down the computer. Obviously my computer shut down as it would be still working if I hadn't.

A major note is that external monitors work absolutely fine. Using an external monitor, device manager cant even detect that the laptop monitor is there as if it were unplugged. Thus there is no monitor tricks such as (fn+F4 or win+P).

Some have said to try tricks such as taking out the battery and power plug and removing any possible power from the system by holding down the power button for 30s 1m or 2m.

Some said to swap around memory sticks in an event that a ram went dead.

First I must diagnose the part that has failed. I am inclined to believe that both the monitor and the vid card are ok as a secondary monitor works and that the primary works....sometimes.

Where do you guys think I should start to begin the diagnosing process. The cable between the monitor and video card? If so, how do I get to it? Laptops are not always easy to dissemble. ... Read more

Where I would look would be the backlight of your laptop. Shine a flashlight on the screen once the laptop has booted, and see if you see anything. If it's the backlight, you'll see the familiar Windows screens, although very faintly. If it's not the backlight, you won't see anything reflected.

A backlight problem is usually caused by a bad fluorescent tube on older lappies, or an inverter problem. Newer laptops with LED backlights have different issues, usually in the LED drivers.

It could be something as simple as the screen's ribbon connector to the motherboard has become damaged or has come unplugged from repeatedly opening and closing the laptop.

Try the flashlight trick and report back, please.

I have a 4 month old Hp Pavilion X360 2 in 1 laptop. Last time it was used there were no issues, I only closed the lid without turning off last use. The next day I opened up and the screen was black. The backlight works but no display. I turned the computer off and plugged in the AC cord and turned back on. I am still getting the black screen. The computer seems to act as normal (except for the screen). The brightness keys change the backlight brightness and I seem to be able to log in because I carry out the key strokes for logging in (enter, password then enter) and the hard disc starts to work as if it is logging in. CAPS light turns on and off when it is pressed. I have tried:- Entering BIOS (win key + b when turned on)- all 4 arrow keys when turned on- hard reset IAW with HP support Nothing seems to make a difference. Does anyone have any other tricks? Thanks
