Q: Share point

Good Afternoon,

I am active duty in the USAF and my squadron has recently stated pushing us to use Microsoft SharePoint more and more. This may be an AF wide trend, not sure; the point is I have no idea what SharePoint is, what it does, how it works, or what capabilities and advantages it might bring to me and my co-workers. I was looking for someone who might be able to answer these questions, and might also be able to discuss some of the disadvantages of SharePoint. Also, are there other programs similar to SharePoint that can do the same things, or possibly have even greater capabilities. Thank you very much for you time and help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I try to add users to a SharePoint site I receive the following message:

"Cannot add user because a user with that name already exists."

Some additional information:

1. I am one of the administrators of the site (there is one other administrator).
2. We both receive the same error when trying to add users.
3. We are using SharePoint 3.0
4. Under the "Manage Users" page the people we are trying add do not show up as users.

Thanks.

Hello.

A sbscription has been created for a report. When selecting "Manage subscription" option from the down arrow, the page doesn't load. The only way is to delete and recreate it. It runs fine, then when you want to manage it again, the page doesn't load or it takes a very long time to load (if at all).

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Do I have any alternatives? Is there a Share Point site that can be accessed for practice purposes? I'm open to suggestions. HELP!!

first i am sorry i am so much biggenr in the networking issues
anyways

i have an access point device , and i have windows 7 on my computer , can i share my files through my the wireless so i can access to them by using another computer having a wireless adapter ?

if yes so how can i do that

i hope someone helps me

thank you

A:can i use an ACCESS POINT device to share my files through a network ?

If you have computers on the same local area network (LAN) they can communicate with each other. If you connect the computers to the ACCESS POINT device (I assume this is a wireless access point, or WAP) the computers can file share.

Short description for Windows 7 and 8 file and printer sharing:

Go into the Network and Sharing Center from the Control Panel or from the Network icon in the Notification Area. Your network must be designated 'Private' (or 'Home' or 'Work'). Click on Change advanced sharing settings. In the Private or Home or Work section you can configure File and printer sharing, Public folder sharing, and Password protected sharing.

You may want to change the Workgroup name. To check it or change it right click on "Computer" and select "Properties."

You must uninstall or properly configure any non-windows firewall (security suite).

Really need more information to be able to help.
What is the make/model and operating system of each computer?
How are they connected?
Do the compuiters show in each other's Network display?
Can the computers ping each other by IP Address and Computer Name?

This is a general trouble shooting guide for simple problems.

Each computer must have a Unique Name.
Each computer must have at least one user account with a password. Vista will not share with computers that do not.
All the computers must have the same Work Group Name.
File Sharing must be turned on for each computer.
Firewalls must be configured to allow sharing.
To Turn on File Sharing.
For the XP computers go to Control Panel, Network Setup wizard.
Click next.
Click next.
If you are running wireless, the ethernet card will be listed. If connected by ethernet and you have a wireless card it will be listed.
For right now, just select "Ignore the listed connections".
Click next.
Select "This computer connects to the internet by a residential gateway".
Click next.
Enter the Work Group name.
Click next.
Select "Turn on File and printer Sharing"
Click next.
Verify all the information is correct.
Click next.
I would select "Just finish the wizard" and not make a disc. It take about the same amount of time to run the disc as to manually enter the data.

I have a unusual case where I need to setup two mapped network drives as two different users to the same share location. When I attempt to map the second drive after inputting the user name and password the system goes on its merry way for a few seconds
and then returns me back to the username/password input.
If I change the second mapped network drive to use the IP address the two shares work happily. If I manipulate the host file and point two paths to the same address then I can also work around this problem. However, I would simply like to know why I am blocked
from setting two mapped drives to point to the same share with different credentials?
e.g.
TestFolder on TestServer is shared to TestUser1 & TestUser2 where the IP of TestServer is 192.168.0.2.
Case1
If I map S: to \\TestServer\TestFolder using TestUser1, if I then map T: to \\TestServer\TestFolder using TestUser2 it will not work.
Case2
Mapping S: to \\TestServer\TestFolder using TestUser1, if I then map T: to \\192.168.0.2\TestFolder using TestUser2 it will work and I can access the folder as the two different users.
Case 3
If I map S: to \\TestServer\TestFolder using TestUser1, if I then map T: to \\TestServer\TestFolder using TestUser1 it will also work (but I am accessing S: & T: as the same user).
Why do cases 2 + 3 work, but case 1 does not?

I'm working on creating a point-to-point wireless network between my computer store and a car wash I own that's about 1 /4 mile away. I thought I might start a thread to share the progress along the way.

The goal is to be able to provide Internet service for credit card payments as well as security camera monitoring. I'm hopeful that the connection will be stable and low latency enough to also allow for VOIP.

Next door to the computer store is a home that was once owned by the local ambulance squad. They've got a tall tower still there that is no longer in use. We've made arrangements to be able to put a Ubiquiti Nanobeam on it, which will have a clear line-of-sight to the car wash. We got a tower that was once used by a home to receive TV signals and put it up at the car wash. On Monday, I got up in the bucket truck and mounted the Nanobeam there. (Photos below.) We still need to run conduit and cables to the tower on the computer store side and then climb that tower (as the bucket truck won't reach). It should be fun! I don't think that'll get done next week, but hopefully the week after.

Greetings,
I have an odd issue.. a user reports that they are unable to access a network shared folder from their PC. Here is what I have gathered so far:
-The network share is from their PC located at C:\SQL2014. The share name is SQL2014. Their hostname for this example is "ABC".
-If I attempt to connect to the share from the user's PC ABC to \\ABC\SQL2014 I get the generic error:
  "Windows cannot access \\ABC\SQL2014
You do not have permission to access \\ABC\SQL2014. Contact your network administrator to request access."
-If I attempt to connect to the share by ABC's IP \\192.168.1.140\SQL2014 I can access it.
-If I attempt to connect to the share by ABC's FQDN at  \\ABC.domain.com\SQL2014 I can access it.
-If I map ABC\SQL2014 as a drive letter, I can access it.
-Connecting to this share works fine from any other PC other than ABC.
-I've confirmed the error is affecting any profile old or new on ABC, which means it is a PC-wide issue on ABC.
-If I share C:\SQL2014 as ANY OTHER NAME OTHER THAN SQL2014, I can access it. As in if I share C:\SQL2014 with the share name SQL2014a, I can access \\ABC\SQL2014a.
-Deleted the share and recreated - same issue.
-Created C:\Test and shared it as SQL2014, cannot access \\ABC\SQL2014. It is NOT an issue with the actual SQL2014 folder.

From internet searches I've found the following solutions do not affect my case:
-Clearing CSC/Offline cache (most common working solution)
-C... Read more

Dear admins, power users etc.
The last 36h hours i spend googling my problem but couldn't get any help to solve this issue. I have multiple Windows 7 machines (32bit and 64 bit) at home.

One machine shows my samba share in the network environment and i can access it via double click perfectly.
Another machine doesn't show my samba share in the network environment. However I can access it via \\Share\mount or via \\ip\mount (after accessing the mount it shows up in the network environment, not sure what causes the problem of not showing it in the network environment initally)
The "headache-giving" machine that i refer to in the introduction doesn't show the share in the network environment nor allowing me to access the \\Share\mount or \\ip\mount but only connecting to the samba share via mounting it as Networkdrive X,Y,Z...
As one can imagine googling this problem is not the easiest task and gives you a lot of false positive results. Trying to access my Share via \\Share\mount or \\ip\mount gives me the following error message:

As 2/3 or the windows machines can access the samba share, samba smb.conf problems can be excluded. So I strongly assume it is a Windows problem. I am running MCAfee Virusscan Enterprise. Windows Firewall is disabled and the machine is also in the same "WORKGROUP" as the samba share.

Howdy,

It has been a while since I last posted. I am trying to help out a reporter with a story on networking and I would like to get this group's thoughts on the topic below:

Cabling: Structured vs. Point-To-Point
When it comes to data center cabling, there are two primary options: structured and point-to-point. This article should look at the pros and cons of both, how they differ, etc. When and where is one option a better fit over the other? How does the cabling option chosen affect overall data center flexibility, performance, and future-proofing?

We have a point 2 point wireless network set up here (D-Link DWL-220AP) that seems to go down for no reason at all every few months (there's no really pattern to it). The connection is erratic for a couple weeks during that time (and sometimes requires a reboot) and then goes back to normal after those couple weeks and then is fine for another few months.

These units (the send and receive) are connected to cylinder style antennas which are a few hundred feet apart. It's difficult to blame the antennas or the connections to them since the connection always seems to come back and work fine for months at a time. It seems that if it was the antennas or there connections that it would be more frequently. Also, it is not weather related (as I once thought) as it occurs it fine weather too.

I really have no idea what is causing it? I doubt it is the settings because it seems if it was the settings than it would be down all the time and would require some changes on both ends. Recently I disconnected the receive unit from it's antenna and brought it over to the send unit so that they were side by side. I than disconnected the send unit from it's antenna so that they would only point at each other physically. I ran a ping test for over and hour and didn't have a single drop. This makes me think that both units are fine and that it is something in between the units that is causing the problem.

There are other wireless networks in the area and a radio repeate... Read more

Hello, I would just start off by saying that I have been lurking here lately and have found this website to be a huge asset for information over the last couple of months but I'm in a little rut and need a little advice on how to get out.

We are in the process of building a separate maintenance facility on the other side of our complex approximately 2000ft away (nearly clear l.o.s.). In it there will be 2 desktop computers and another laptop. In our main office we have a standard domain based network with dhcp. I would like to be able to connect this new building to our current office via a wireless connection and want to double check all of the hardware to due so before I finish up the purchasing.

Already in place on our current building is a hi-gain outdoor directional antenna which is mounted on our building facing the new building. The antenna is connected to a D-Link DWL-G700AP access point via a 30ft outdoor antenna extension cable. The access point then plugs into our main switch via a standard patch cable. I have already purchased another directional outdoor antenna for the new building but I'm not sure what else I'll need to connect the 2 desktops (wired) and 1 wireless laptop that will be in that building. Would I need to get another access point similar to the D-Link that I listed above and then connect it to a standard 4-port wireless router? Here is what I?m thinking in simplified diagram: Current building?s network > switch... Read more

You got VISIO? Can you show us what you mean using a VISIO Network flow-chart. Sounds like a project and a plan. How many floors is this building? Is this a business or someone house? Not hard to do, but you sound like you know what has to be done. You'll need and AP for each floor, you can test the signal using Net tumbler or some commerical software or a tester for wi-fi which would be better. Wireless laptop would do the trick. You want the signal as strong as you can.

Our company has a 100MB point to point connection through Comcast connected to a remote site 30 miles away. When everything is working properly, we can ping to that site in about 2 ms and transfer speeds back and forth look good.

Occasionally, our ping time will increase to 11 ms and transfer speeds take 3 to 4 times longer on larger files.

Comcast has looked at the circuit and not finding any issues. Our networking team is looking at switches and routers and claim no issues as well.

The increased ping time may last a few days and then go back to normal. After a few months or so it comes back again.

Any ideas on what may be occurring and why no one can seem to find out why it fluctuates? Our applications that we connect to at the site are running smoothly, it is just when we see large data copies back and forth that we see issues.

HI All,
We have set up three users in a home network where one person holds all the files on their PC and that folder is shared for access to everyone.  It is a remote location so no need to have it too locked down.  I haven't created a homegroup but can
if that changes things.  the issue is that at the moment two people can open the same file at the same time without any message about the file already being in use - then the rule of "last person to save the file" wins.  Is there any way
- by settings on the PC, or by using homegroup instead, or by using a third party tool - to prevent this from happening?
Thanks,

Hi, I have a simple network at home that consists of 2 PCs connected via a crossover cable. They are both running Windows XP Pro. I ran the network wizard on both machines and can share the internet connection fine. However neither computer can share files with the other or share the printer.

When I set folders to ?share this folder on the network? the folder is not visible on the other computer. Both computers have IP addresses set, however neither computer is able to ping the other.

When Computer.A (host of the internet connection) goes to Start -> My Network Places -> ?view workgroup computers? all that shows up in the list is Computer.A.

However if I try to go to ?view workgroup computers? on Computer.B I get the following error message:

?Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator etc.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available?

I have searched the forums and found various steps that I have tried, but I still am not able to get this to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A:Can share internet but can't share files

Hello! Welcome to TechSpot!

The quickest fix is a router/hub rather than peer to peer cable.
Do you have file and print sharing turned on?
Try setting up network wizard to something other than "MSHOME"
You might have only internet sharing turned on.
Did you create the files for network or just "finish network setup",
in the wizard?

This has helped me by setting guest password.

Protect your guest account - The guest account can be used by hackers and/or malware to gain greater access to your machine, even when turned off. The guest account can't be removed. However, you can disable it, but this can affect the functionality of your computer. Instead, what you can do, and what you probably should do, is put a strong password on it, and then leave it safely turned off. You do this by opening a command window (start -> run -> type "cmd" and press enter). at the command prompt, type net user guest <password> (where <password> is your chosen password, being something you can remember). After hitting the enter key, the guest account will be password protected. If your machine is networked and authenticating as guest, then you'll need this password to access network shares - if you tell it to remeber the password, it will only ask the once.Click to expand...

I followed the instruction to manually create a Manual Restore Point and that works fine. Then I decided to set up the task in the Task Scheduler to automatically create a restore point once daily. For some reason the task is started as it should but it never completes and I have to manually terminate it. I have included in the attached ZIP file, 5 screen shots of the tabs of the task, 4 screen shots of the history tab starting and running and then 4 screen shots of the history tab when I terminated it an hour and 25 minutes later. I don't think a restore point takes over 85 minutes to complete so I wonder what I have set incorrectly??? The VBS file is C:\Program Files\Scheduled_Instant_Restore_Point.vbs and was downloaded from the W7 forum.

Let me know if you need any additional information. If this has been answered, I couldn't find the thread. Please point me to it.

Thank you.

this is very weird
I have no restore points, so I create a new one, get a success message
then when I go to see the restore point, 7 comes back and sez no restore points there!!!
I ran a sfc /scannow, it came back ok
did my commodo full scan, it finds issues with office 365 but no rootkits etc, lol
ran malware bytes and other rootkit revealers, nothing found there
I have 8gb set aside for restore points, that has been plenty in the past
I did have restore points at one point, did not check too recently though
any ideas what this could be???

A:restore point create success... but no restore point found????

After creating the new restore point and receiving the success message did you click on OK to finish the process?

I've got a strange problem dealing with a 2012 R2 share.  We have a lab with 30 Windows 7 Enterprise workstations.  They all have the same desktop via a GPO applied folder redirection to a share on the above mentioned 2012 R2 server.  All
but 4 of them can connect and pull the desktop with the appropriate shortcuts, network folders, etc.

So the share permissions have no explicit denies.  In an effort to resolve this issue I've added both Everyone and Authenticated Users with Read permissions on top of the appropriate AD Group object that already had Read permissions and of
course SYSTEM and Domain Admins with Full Control.  The NTFS permissions have of course CREATOR OWNER, SYSTEM, and Domain Admins with Full Control.  The appropriate AD Group also has Read permissions.  No explicit NTFS denies either.

Using either the same account that belongs to the appropriate AD Group or my Domain Admin account (which doesn't have the redirected desktop) I can login to all workstations and all but the above mentioned four get the folder redirected desktop.
When I authenticate with my DA account and try to connect to the share on those four computers I get the same error the user gets:

Network Error
Windows cannot access \\SERVER\Share$
You do not have permission to access \\SERVER\Share$.  Contact your network administrator to request access.

I think we've all seen this error before.  But I've only seen it associated w... Read more

W2K domain issue:

users can delete files from
\\server.domain.local\data$\folderbut can't delete files from the
\\server\data$\folder
The server is my domain controller.

When I redirect the "my documents"-folder to \\server.domain.local\data$ , it appears as \\server\data$ in the adress bar, so users can create files but not delete them.

A:Difference between \\server\share and \\server.domain.local\share?

It seems i mapped the driver to \\server.domain.loc\data$ when it can't find it, the computer seems to revert to \\server\data$
Windows is a funny OS.

At the Auburn site, they are on ATT DSL using a TP-LINK TD-W8960N Wireless N ADSL2+ Modem/VPN Router ( that replaced the standard 2WIRE modem/router/WiFi which did not support VPN ) that supports IPSec, PPTP/L2TP and SSL VPN. This unit is connected directly to the ATT DSL line.
The IP info is:
IP 192.168.1.101 ( on the computer that needs the VPN )
Sub 255.255.255.0
Gate 192.168.1.1
DNS 192.168.1.1

External IP 64.30.111.117
At the Mather site, they have a D-Link DIR130 VPN Router that is connected to a Fiber Modem in Bridge mode, so it should be passing everything through to the router ( so says Sure West ) which supports IPSec, PPTP/L2TP and SSL VPN.

The IP info is:
IP 192.168.1.103
192.168.1.104
192.168.1.105
192.168.1.106
192.168.1.108 ( these are the DATA server in Auburn )
Sub 255.255.255.0
Gate 192.168.1.1
DNS 192.168.1.1

External IP 70,235,45,150

I have tried IPSec with no results.
From what I read it should work easily.
Should I be using one of the other versions of VPN ?
Are there hidden things I need to setup ?

Both ask for the IP address to be stated as 192.168.1.103/24 ( example ). I don’t know what the /24 part is, I assume something to do with the Subnet but not sure and can’t seem to find anything on it.

I believe this question is legal. I have two laptops that are wireless: one is a vista and the other a windows xp. I use dial-up and would like to use a point to point connection to share the internet. I just passed the comptia A+ core so I know a little but not enough, how could I make this connection?

A:Wireless Point to Point?

Set up an ad-hoc wireless network between the two PCs. Make sure it is working (e.g., you can ping each from the other) and then enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the dial-up connection.

If possible use the XP machine for the dial-up connection.

I understand that this is just an outline; I leave it as an exercise for the student to ask for any details needed.

Tried searching the forums but having no luck.

2 sites.
each with sonicwall nsa 240(site a: 192.168.0.x / site b: 192.168.200.x)
client has a new p2p 6mb pipe. with a cisco 2600 router on each end with the sub of 192.168.1.x

Need to connect the 2 via that p2p, so we can eliminate the virtual vpn.

I have connected each ethernet handoff to the x2 connections.

I need to config the x2 ports on each side and confi them for a trusted DMZ so any traffic along that x2 on either side is trusted and can see the network.

Having a hardtime configuring this correctly so each side trusts each other and secures each side.

Would appreciate any thoughts, direction or details on how to resolve this.

Thank you.

I am in the process of sorting out a huge network mess. I have 2 stores (about 4 blocks apart) Store 1 has the T1 connection coming in, Store 2 is supposed to share this connection thru the point to points, however these are not connected to the store 1's network. What would be the easiest way to do this? I figured i could place a router from the switches to the point to point at each location. If this would work how would you configure them? Here is a diagram showing what I have for a little clarification. TIA for any info on this.

A:Point to Point between stores

Hi,

From Store 1:

Confirm the Network settings in the Cisco 1800. For Example:

Store 1

10.0.1.X
10.0.1.254

Setup the router in Store 2, I would guess another Cisco 1800.

Store 2

10.0.2.X
10.0.2.254

Of course, any network Switches would need to be appropriately placed after the Cisco routers.

Now, do you have any experience programming the IOS on those routers?
