Spectre x360 2016/2017 Power Noise

Q: Spectre x360 2016/2017 Power Noise

Hello All, There was one similar thread, but it seemed to be closed. When the power is plugged in on this new machine (7th Gen CPU / etc., but not the new model with the pen), there is a very faint static noise (possibly to the speakers). With the power disconnected it is not audible. Anyone else hear this? FYI, it can be heard when the system is in sleep - not just when it is on. It does not sound like "coil whine" - it could be bad grounding or something like that. R

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a brand new Spectre x360 (13-w023dx). When it's in sleep mode, the power LED blinks. What I am realizing is that when the power LED is illuminated during its blink cycle, I hear a high pitch tone.  It's super high pitch and hard to hear outside of a silent room, but still can be irritating.  I have seen other electronics in my life do this, but didn't know if it's a known issue or just mine. Also, if there's any potential of a BIOS adjustment that could fix it (perhaps changing the power going to the LED or something).  Thanks. [edit] I am realizing it only does this when plugged in/charging.  If I unplug it, the power LED still blinks in sleep mode, but there's no high pitch sound. Tried changing to a different wall outlet, just in case, but that didn't make any change. Still had the same high putch noise.

I was lucky enough to buy one of the new Spectre X360 Ready to Ship model early, but the day after receiving it the Laptop started shutting off when lifted from the left side. It does not shut down when lifted with 2 hands or from the right side. Is also does not shut down when in the screen is rotated to put it in tablet mode. Only when held by left side only when screen is in normal laptop postion. Any thoughts. It's only 5 days old should I return it. Also it is hard to start back up. Need to due a hard reboot by holding power button in for 1 minute w/o AC adapter attached. Does it with and without AC adapter attached.

The display in the 2016 model of the HP Spectre x360 15 4K turned out not to be as advertised, and it is possible that they are using the same display in the new model. The 2016 HP Spectre x360 15 display used the RG/BW Pentile matrix to more or less "cheat" the ability to advertise as 4K UHD 3840x2160, without actually providing the full detail of the resolution. HP Spectre x360 15 false-4K demonstration HP Spectre x360 13 true-QHD demonstration (for comparison, 13.3" model's high res display is true) The new one could be using a completely different display, but given HP's track record with pentile I would say it is better to wait for reviews in order to confirm that. I will update this post or make a follow-up post once I am able to confirm the type of display used in this laptop.

Hi everyone, I would like to replace the built-in 1TB SSD in my Spectre x360 with a 2TB one (namely, Samsung MZ V6E2 S24 A450BW SSD 960 Evo Nvme) Two questions: 1. Is this possible at all? I mean, is the 2TB compatible with the M.2 slot inside my laptop?2. Is this something I can do myself without losing warranty? (I know how to do it, it's only that I don't want to open the laptop up myself if this automatically voids my warranty). Thanks! /Vjeko

A:Replace the built-in SSD in 2017 Spectre x360

Here is the Manual: Service Manual Yes it absolutely will support the 2 TB NVME M.2. (You must have robbed a bank to buy one).  The warranty will be fine as long as you cause no damage in the process. Good luck and post back results please.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

I need a definitive answer. Everywhere on the internet I have searched I haven't gotten one, is the new 2017 kaby lake model of the HP spectre x360 AC013DX, i7-5500 CPU compatible with an active stylus. If so is it compatible with the dell 750 AAGN active stylus? I have checked the compatibilty list however it says that it isn't compatible however I have seen useres reporting that it comes with a stylus and ebay sellers, multiple of them, saying that it is compatible with a stylus and one that even comes with one. HP has done a terrible job of the calirty of styluses and it has taken me over a month to try and get an answer but I haven't so I ask on here now. Somebody please clear this up for me.

Hello I recently bought the HP spectre x360 13-ac003na (in the UK) and love it. I would like to buy an extra charger for it and maybe a replacement for the stylus that came with it as I am bound to lose it at some point.  Charger:My model is apparently TPN-DA07 and says to replace with spare 860210-850 (see photo)I found this on the HP website: http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=V5Y26AA&opt=ABU&sel=ACC However this does not look identical and does not list the spectre x360 as a compatible product. Will it work?Pen:The pen that came in the box is shown in image below. As i understand it, this pen uses n-trig technology which is different to previous spectre models. I can't seem to find a similar stylus on the hp store. Any help would be appreciated. I want to give you more money HP but don't know how! Thank you Rob

Would like to know if anyone else have faced similar problem with this laptop. Being a new model that started shipping last week, there will be only a few out there.

Multiple pages on HP's website show the new x360 (Kaby Lake) being used with a stylus. I purchased an active stylus and after being unable to get it to work was told by tech support that the stylus is not supported with the new 13inch Spectre? Are the advertising pages on shop.hp.com incorrect or is there a stylus which works with the new Spectre? The footnotes say that not all hardware works with the Spectre however it seems to be pushing the envelope a little to show someone using the stylus, when apparently none work with this laptop?

Got my Spectre X360 15.6 2017 edition few days ago and immediately notice this very annoying issue. In short, the touch function is disabled for about 2 seconds after using the pen, which means everytime when you finish writing something with the pen, you have to wait for about 2 seconds before the touch screen responds to your finger input.  This is really annoying, it slows down my workflow dramatically. And I have never experienced this kind of issue before on any other devices using NTrig digitizer, and I have used a lot NTrig devices (Fujistu 550, HTC Flyer, Sony Vaio Duos, Vaio Flips, Microsoft Surfaces). But I did noticed similar issues on some Wacom AES devices like the Thinkpad Yoga 14. I do remember HP mentioned somewhere that the pen uses Universal Windows Pen protocol, Is this part of the new protocol? Anyway, please please please, HP! Fix this problem and release a firmware update ASAP, I really like the Spectre X360, You guys did a good job in general, but this is a deal breaker, I would hate to send it back.

Hello. I've been having trackpad issues on my new 2017 Spectre x360 13-ac0xx unit for about two weeks now. Firstly, unlike other techies, I appreciate that the trackpad uses custom Synaptics drivers rather than Microsoft's standard precision touchpads. I've owned both a Surface Pro 4 (w/ type cover) and a Dell XPS 13, which I returned due to their horribly slow and janky Precision touchpads. And although HP has horrible quality control (this is my third Spectre x360 unit, which I recieved 2 weeks ago), I would really like this trackpad issue to be resolved. Ever since I have had the machine, the trackpad has been showing some erratic behavior (which I will describe below). PLEASE NOTE: this is profoundly irritating and I have been trying to troubleshoot this myself for the past few weeks. The previous two Spectre x360 units (bought from Best Buy) did not have this problem, but this third machine (ordered from HP.com) does. There seem to be 3 "separate" problems with the touchpad. The first is that the trackpad sometimes locks up and refuses to track my finger when I'm touching it. The cursor moves on screen only when I fully click-and-drag on the trackpad surface, but otherwise doesn't work. You can see what I mean here: https://youtu.be/idt4_OkkSMA The second problem is that at times, the right click zone expands over to the middle-to-top left side of the trackpad. So, when I try to press down and initiate a left-click, I get a right-click menu ... Read more

Just bought the new 4k 13 inch spectre x360. So far it has been great, except that I am getting nowhere near the advertised battery life. I have already researched these forums, and read the tips located here - http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c00596784 - and here (translated from Spanish to English) - http://h30467.www3.hp.com/t5/Consejos-de-Expertos-para-notebooks/Consejos-de-mantenimiento-de-Bater%... - and nothing has helped.  In just 2 hours of up time with the screen set to 50% or less, I reached 20% battery remaining. This was only with web browsing and some office processses such as email and Microsoft Word. Do I have a bad battery, or is the battery life overall just not as good (or even close to) advertised? The laptop is less than 30 days old.

I recently bought the 2016 version of the HP Spectre x360, and I'm trying to look for an active stylus to use for it, specifically for the palm rejection. My problem is that I've been finding very conflicting information on its compatibility. Some say that it is compatible with only the HP Active Stylus, others say that a Dell stylus works, and others say that the stylus compatibility was removed completely in the 2016 model. (To make it even more confusing, there is even a reddit page claiming the problem only comes from a faulty firmware installer.) Tl;dr: What active styluses are compatible with the 2016 model of the HP Spectre x360? (Or has that functionality been removed completely?) Thanks so much, any replies are greatly appreciated

Hello, I just got this computer as a gift. Its intended use is for school. The dual tablet/laptop nature of the product seemed like it would be perfect for school/note taking. I am looking to use a stylus or 'active pen' of some sort for precise note taking (e.g., on one-note). From what I have seen there seems to be no consensus online about whether or not this model is compatible with the active pen. The sales rep who sold this computer said it was compatible but everything I see online suggests otherwise. Many say that the 2016 version is no longer supporting this function--or that to make it work, you must "extract the .bit file," I wouldn't know how to go about doing that. This function is the primary reason for getting this laptop, and I may have to return it if the function is not available. Before I buy any product, I would like a definitive answer. Do these types of stylus's work with this specific product?  If yes, which product(s) should I look into getting that are promised to work? If not, are there any *specific* steps I need to take to make an active stylus work?  I look forward to hearing a response from the community. I will be very dissapoited if I am told a specific pen works, and I purchace it and it does not work. I would prefer not to have to return this laptop, and I would prefer it not be to late for me to do so if I recieve a run-around. Thanks,Happy Holidays.

Hello! I just got a Refurbished HP Spectre X360 (late 2016 model) with 512 GB and 16 GB RAM. I love it! The fan is quiet enough, and the keyboard is fantastic. I was choosing between this laptop and the Dell XPS 13, and I'm so glad I chose it.  I do, however, have one small problem. There are some stuck pixels on the screen, and when I gently press them with a pencil (coated with a microfiber cloth), they move! They jump a few pixels to the left or right. I've fixed stuck pixels before with UD Pixel and with the physical nudge, but I've never seen anything like this! Is there anything I can do? While you're at it, do you have any other recommendations for using this new PC? Much appreciated,  Casey

Aside from the below trackpad issues, coil whine and fan that likes to spin up even when doing basic tasks, I quite like the new Spectre x360. Issue 1: When using the entire trackpad as a click, the cursor will sometimes move just before I actually click down, which is something I never experienced on my MacBook Air's trackpad. This results in either missing what I originally wanted to click, or clicking on something entirely different. Issue 2: Two-finger scrolling doesn't work in the bottom 20% of the trackpad. I can use two fingers in that area, but scrolling won't actually start until I get towards the middle of the trackpad. So, until I hit that area, it'll just be single-finger pointing. Given the trackpad's wider than it is tall, this can become a problem. I tried messing around with the dated-looking Synaptics settings program, but couldn't get anything to help. Maybe it'll get better with time on its own? Otherwise, hopefully software updates will fix it...

Didn't know where to post this so this was my alternative. I bought my Spectre x360 about two days ago brand new. It seems like a lot of people have the same problem as I do. While the computer is shut down (not hibernating, not sleeping), I will lose about 5-6% every eight hours while off. Battery does not lose charge THAT quickly. I've run the battery health check and everything is okay. I would assume so since this laptop is brand new. Why will HP not take responsibility over this issue? Every single thread I've been in, offer no real solution for this. I will end up returning this product if there is no solution and I hope those who have the same issue do too. When you pay 1,500 dollars for a laptop, you have high expectations for the product so why does this type of issue exist? Upvote so HP knows that they have a problem on their hands or they'll end up sweeping this under the carpet again. Hold them accountable.

Hello,I recently purchased a new 2016 model Spectre x360 (PN X7V20UA). It came running Windows 10 1511, and I would like it to be running 1607 (Anniversary Update). I was noticing severe battery drain on my one month old spectre x360 i7 7500 ssd 512 GB variant. the laptop was taking more than 3 hours to charge and the charge was not holding for more than two and half hours for normal web browsing. It was also discharging at an unacceptable pace while completely turned off. I bought this computer about a month and a half ago and today I noticed it started doing a weird clicking noise (I had this happen before with the speakers on an other hp computer on Linux. They later broke). This sound is completely new because I've been working from home the last couple of weeks and I never heard it before. I could hear the fan starting, but never this sound.I can't seem to be able to trigger it, so I can't really figure out what it is. I first thought it was everytime I got a notification on Hangouts (sound related) but it is not always. Then I thought it was a processing related issue, maybe the fan was coming on and something got loose in the computer, but the fan just started (loudly) and there was no clicking sound. Anybody has any idea what it is and how to proceed? Ps: I can also hear a whirring/scratching sound when I put my ear close to the top left corner, but the clicking sound seems to come from the bottom right. Maybe they are related?

A:HP Spectre x360 with weird clicking noise

I also have a Spectre X360 that makes noises, but I don't think they're the clicking yours makes. Sometimes, when the fan first engages, there is a very quiet click, before it ramps up. Then there is the constant buzzing/crackling that you mentioned, and this has been discussed at length here: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware/Spectre-x360-Noise/td-p/5107394 with no proper solution as yet. It sounds like your clicking is a different sound, and since the only moving part in the machine is the fan, nothing else should really be making audible sounds (unless you have sound playing through the speakers). The crackling/buzzing mentioned is due to power management circuitry for the processor, and the noise is barely audible. If your clicking is loud enough to be heard during regular use, then my thoughts would be that its the fan, something in the fan, or the speakers. Do you hear anything if you shake the machine?

HelloI'm using the new HP Spectre x360 laptop and I'm experiencing an annoying issues. Whenever I connect the charger there is a "metallic" noise from the laptop. In a quiet room there is no problem hearing it. Almost sounds like an old mechanical hard drive but more metallic and high pith. I only hear this when the charger is connected I had the laptop replaced by this but still have the same issues. I have three different original power adapters and I have the same issue with all of them. I have also tried to disable the keyboard baclighting since I read that could cause issues previously. I don't really want to send this one back too since I think that the third laptop will have the same issue. Mst be others noticing this? Any solution, workaround or clue what is causing this? Best regardsJohan

Hi, I just received my HP Spectre 360 (13-4007na). Its the top end model - i7, 8GB / 512GB  SSD / QHD with Windows 8.1 - 64. I am noticing that the fan comes on even for basic web browsing activity. All you need to do to get the fan started is load 4 to 5 tabs on a mainstream news site (like theguardian). This can be consistently reproduced.  More details- I am using Chrome as my browser. - I have installed all the recommended Windows updates (400mb+)- The machine is brand new. So there is no question of dust etc.- My room temperature is quite low - about 12 C- I installed speedfan, one of the temperature sensors reads 60 C after opening about 5 tabs- The fan stays on for several seconds at a time, starting up again when you open new pages- The fan is quite loud and very distracting. This is very disappointing and  is a deal breaker for what is presented as a "premium" ultrabook model.  None of the online reviews seems to mention this. Just wondering if its just a issue with my machine. Would very much appreciate any suggestions. Thanks,hkm.

I just got my computer today and I am noticing the same problem. However, no one else seems to be having the same problem I suppose? My computer's specs are almost similar, i7, 8gb ram, 256ssd with FHD screen. I don't know if we should try calling HP and try and get a replacement or hear what other people have to say? What do you think?

Hello, I purchased a new spectre x360, w013dx model number, from best buy on Feb 11 2017 and I seem to be having an issue that has popped up on this forum, YouTube, and various other Google searches, namely the loose, or more appropriately, the overly noisy and clicky touchpad. I am wondering A) is this a condition that becomes worse, progressively that is, or does it get better over time as the touch pad and other components get "broken in" so to speak, and mate together better, like using lapping compound on machine parts? B) If this is considered an issue, is there a fix for it if I send it in to HP? It is moderately bothersome to me, and in haven't really experienced it before on other laptops. I really like to use the 2 and 3 finger swipes and scroll features, and when I push down on the touchpad without clicking it, it feels loose and there is an audible click when I press down on it. I am coming from and Acer laptop that had an extremely smooth and oversized glass track pad so I may be overly aware because I got used to that one and it was very solid. I do not want to return it and plan to keep it because otherwise it is fantastic, but I have seen other people say this and I will echo it here, this is a 1200 to 1400 dollar device and  I want to make sure it is in peak condition because I plan to keep it for at least 2 to 3 years. If someone from HP could respond I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Hi everyone, I received my X360 a couple of weeks ago and I'm thinking of returning it due to fan noise. I've followed some advice in other posts where people are suggesting in it's driver/windows 10 or even dust related. I've updated drivers, stopped windows services... done everything I can think of resulting in watching task manager like a hawk. With a few tabs in my browser open it will start to get warm at the rear-left, eventually the fan will kick in slightly - the fan kicking in slightly is fine. However should anything remotely tax the cpu at around 25% for anything more than a minute or two, or worse still I dare to open an indie game which should be too demanding then the fan quickly spins-up and is an off putting nuisance. I know it's not a gaming machine, but the cpu load issue has me wary of even installing a standalone antivirus. How has everyone found the fan noise or heat produced by their Spectre? Would be grateful for some feedback please.

Hi @CliffWard?,Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP Spectre x360 Notebook and issues with heat and fan noises. I recommend to restore the BIOS defaults. You could restore the BIOS with this document selecting the reloading the BIOS default settings and fan defaults. Restart the Notebook after it has completed. You could  try using the Windows Update Troubleshooting tool to fix any updates that have not come through for Windows 10.  Please restart the Notebook twice to make sure all update have been completed! Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just select the on the right side, download and run the program on your Notebook and it will help with any software and driver updates on your system.I hope this helps.Thanks.

So I just got this laptop, and I noticed that it would make a soft but noticeable clicking sound sometimes when I tap it lightly or when I'm scrolling with two fingers. Is this normal or should I exchange it? Thanks!

Yesterday my laptop suddenly refuse to get power from AC source. Following the instructions on the web, I first assumed AC adapter faillure. But the adapter works well. The tiny LED next to the power inlet went off, although Windows catches the AC adapter driver and seems working. The last job I did before the problem was updating the BIOS, which is instructed by HP Support program.  I bring it to the service center, but they refused to take it since it's not a Korean-sold model (I bought it from the other country).Quite annoying because they did not take any questions at all, just repeating 'we don't accept that, go away'. Can anybody give me a solution? The battery is only half-filled, and after it dries I think it would be turned into a piece of brick.I really need a help. Thankyou in advance!

So like many others on this forum my HP Spectre x360 13-4106na has no power after 10 months. Last night I shut down my laptop and turned off the power at the wall. Today when I turned it on it would not start and the Power LED is not on, even though it is plugged into the mains. I have tried disconnecting all external devices/cables and have also bought a replacement Power Adapter but still nothing. I am now out of pocket by 39.99 for the new Power Adapter from Maplins and worse still I can't open an issue/ticket online as I have the HP 3 year Pickup and Return Notebook Service as this can only be done between the hours of 08:30 and 18:00 by  phone with one of their engineers. I have experienced the issue with the tracker as well as the Intel Graphics resetting although I had up until now put this down to Windows 10.  HP what is going on? I will be keeping a track on how the replacement process goes especially as I have the extended warranty and the laptop is still not yet a year old and will provide updates. Jonathan
