SFC Scan find corrupt files but unable to find them in CBS log

Q: SFC Scan find corrupt files but unable to find them in CBS log

I have been running into some issues with my computer for a while and after trying several things I decided to run SFC scan. It claims to have found corrupt files it could not repair but when I followed Option 3 from SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker and opened the sfcdetails.txt file it shows everything as verify complete and no errors or corrupt files. I am attaching the sfcdetails.txt file as well as the cbslog.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,
Seems like yesterday(Saturday), my computer has decided to possibly corrupt my user profile. I logged in as normal, but instead of loading straight into windows, it decided it would give me "Preparing your desktop" - this would hang for a few minutes. Once it loaded, all my shortcuts were disappeared, all my harddrive links to certain folders were gone and a few programs wouldn't load. I took a look at my users in C drive, and I could see everything under my username.
I decided I'd try renaming the profile, so I made 2 more new admin accs. One for the new profiles, other to move it... In safe mode, I renamed my original account to what my other acc was, deleted the new folder. I then deleted the reg key for the profiles for my other accs. It worked fine once I loaded it, started without any glitches, had everything I needed; apparently this was just a temp fix.
I started my computer this evening (Sunday) and I had all 3 accounts come up. My original, the new, the transfer. I logged into the new one that I used yesterday, and my icons have enlarged along with my background being changed. Also with a couple of programs not working.
The only thing I can remember doing before Saturday, was uninstalling UPlay & Ghost Recon Future Soldier as my SSD was running out of space. Cleared up 20gbs roughly.
Is there anything I can do to check for a real fix, or to be sure it won't happen again or to bring back my user... Read more

I have a laptop running Windows Vista. I ran an integrity scan through command prompt. "sfc /scannow" I got the following message: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them." "Details are included in the CBS.Log"

I was able to open the log file in notepad. How do I find the corrupt files and fix them? Can I replace THE CORRUPT FILES WITH GOOD ONES FROM MY os CD?

A:How to find and fix the corrupt files.

If you ran sfc /scannow...it is supposed to replace damaged files from the DVD...so I don't see the point of trying that via some other method.

I think I'd run the appropriate hard drive diagnostic before expending any more energy.

If the hard drive checks out as OK, then I would probably try a repair install per http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html .

I have just hooked up a Nikon CoolscanV to the IBM Thinkpad after a reinstall. The scanner just generates a message saying 'Nikon Scan was unable to find any active devices.'
I have checked the USB port and cable. They are all right.
In Computer Management, Device Manager, the scanner appears under 'Imaging Devices' and right-clicking tells me that it is 'working normally.'

I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I recently moved from a corrupted HDD to a new HDD by cloning the corrupted HDD.

I later found out that some cloned files and programs are already corrupted an can't be opened form my new HDD after cloning from the old one. Some files like Songs, Movies and software Setups.

I was wondering if there is a software that can detect corrupted files and programs and remove them?

A:How to find corrupt Non-system files and programs in the HDD

Why did you clone a corrupted system ?

Do a clean install.

A system file check will correct system files but not 3rd party programs, you will have to uninstall and reinstall those. Some programs will give you the option to repair them.

I've email printout with e-mail subject, sent out by the user who left our employ. His account was deleted and cannot be recovered. The user have left whole lot of PST files and we are hoping that he had saved this "sent" e-mail in one of them. The PST files are rather large and contain tons of folders each, so it's kinda hard to go through each one finding this very specific Subject line. Is there any other way to scan within the PST files to find a particular text string, like this Subject line? Before I start googling this stuff, I thought someone might already been there/done that.

A:How does way to scan within the PST files to find a particular text string?

Open the PST files in Outlook and do a search.

Hi all,

I am having a repeat problem: my unstable PC BSODed while I wasn't doing anything, rebooted and then BSODed again on boot (0xc000021a), rebooted to the repair environment, which failed to fix it: my machine is unbootable. As before, booting to safe mode is impossible.

I am fairly sure that physical damage to my hardware has rendered something seriously screwy and I will replace the thing soon. Until that time I would like to get my PC back up and running so I have something to use, take backups and so on.

Now, the logfiles the diagnostics leave in Windows\System32\LogFiles\Srt\ are not very helpful. Yesterday it said that a critical boot file was corrupt but did not say which one(s). Today it says that "a patch is preventing the system from starting" but that the repair action, "System files integrity check and repair" failed with error code 0x57.

My understanding is that the correct course of action would now be to run SFC on the offending system. So I booted to the recovery environment, clicked through to the command prompt, and tried it. However, SFC fails; running
sfc /scannow

performs the verification stage and spits out:

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

Now in spite of the frequent recommendation to run this command, my limited understanding is that this is useless anyway, as it is checking the files of the recovery environment. However, running
sfc /scannow /o... Read more

A:Canonical method to find and fix corrupt boot files on unbootable PC?

For the 0xc000021a error:

You forgot the backslash in the offbootdir parameter, although it might not make a difference

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=f: /offwindir=f:\windowsshould be:
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=f:\ /offwindir=f:\windows
If that doesn't help try removing any recent hardware (or any non-essential hardware - leave the mouse, keybd, and monitor)

Today it says that "a patch is preventing the system from starting" but that the repair action, "System files integrity check and repair" failed with error code 0x57.

Indicates that you can boot. Try uninstalling the most recent update in Windows Update, disconnect from the internet and restart.

You should also run Windows Defender Offline

Settings > Update and Security > Defender > Windows Defender Offline ... press the scan offline button

Hi and thank you for reading me
Several days ago, I launched a in-depth scan with avast! and a few problems popped-up. Most of them were called PUP and were located in my Temporary Internet Files. I found the ones for IE and deleted them but I don't know if Mozilla has its own separate files. Furthermore, one identified as a trojan was located in my Windows Defender scans file (I have the name of the specific infected file if that might help) but I can't find it and even if I did, I don't know what to do with it. Do I just delete it or do I have to do anything else ?
Also prior to that scan, I had very bad network connexion problems. I basically couldn't have access to the web for one of those three reasons :
- Home network but no Internet access
- Unidentified network with Internet access
- Unidentified network and no Internet access
Someone suggested that I might be infected so I did the scan. Now after that, my connexion is much better but not flawless, so I'm wondering if those PUP's might have something to do with it.
Lastly, I've been trying to download .exe files from several hosting sites and everytime I do, in the last few seconds of my download, Mozilla freezes. Seconds later, the file is supposedly on my computer and what I find instead is a file named trzF636.tmp The problem only ever comes with hosting sites and it's K-I-L-L-I-N-G me !
So yeah, those are basically all of my problems and I don't know if I'm really infected because now, when I... Read more

A:Downloads replaced by .tmp files and unable to find some infected files

Hello Lullay  -
First PUP = Potentially Unwanted Program (usually a minor problem or unwanted add-on)
As a rule, you can delete these -
"trzF636.tmp" is a randomly named Temporary File that we will now remove.
Please download Temp File Cleaner by Old Timer
Usage Instructions:
Download TFC from the link above and save the file on your desktop.
Close ALL running applications as TFC will terminate them before attempting to clean up the temporary files.
Double-click on the TFC icon - Vista, Win7, & 8, users - Right click and select "Run as administrator"
When the program opens, click on the Start button.
TFC will terminate the Explorer process and all running applications and then begin the process of cleaning out all of your temp folders.
When done, press OK and reboot your computer and finish the cleanup.
Where are you attempting to download .exe files from, and what are they for ??
Please download Security Check by Screen317 from HERE
* Save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.Note: If a security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

First off, I just want to say that this is a fantastic site with a great, helpful community. It has helped me solve several computer related issues and has saved me lots of time.

Here goes my problem:

I've noticed that lately my desktop and my laptop are having issues going to any website ending in .com (google.com). The browser will sit there and load for a minute or 2, then it will say that it can't find the server. However, when I go to any website ending in .edu (i.e. uc.edu) the site comes up rather quickly as it should. I just noticed this in the last couple of days and I just recently installed Norton 360 on both. Could this be causing the issue?

Could it be my ISP? router? I don't really seem to notice this issue when I take my laptop on campus and use my college's internet. But I've only used it on campus once so far this quarter, I might have gotten lucky. It doesn't seem to have this problem all of the time as well. Sometimes if I reset my router it helps.... I'm a complete loss on this issue. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help in advance.

- Mike

A:Unable to find .com servers, but can find .edu just fine...

Hi Mike,

Your problem seems to be in your firewall settings.
Temporarily disabling your firewall, and testing, should show .com sites load without error.

As you are a student, it is possible that the Admin who set up your computer has place restrictions on your user account.
Therefore creating a new Administrator user account should fix those issues, but you may need to approach your computer technical staff at uni (?) and confirm with them first. ie you do not want to upset any user network settings made by your school for you.

Also, if you are considering to restore it to factory settings even if OS is just pre-loaded, in the recovery mode you should be able to do this. And that is if you see a recovery partition drive in My Computer.

We need the actual cbs.log file. If it is too large to upload here you can upload it to a file share like rapidshare and give us the link to it.

If sfc is saying there are files it cannot fix you are probably going to have to do at least a repair install if not a clean re-install.

For that you will need the win 7 dvd, a backup (just is case) and a restore point.

Hi guys, I have a problem. My laptop motherboard fried, so I removed the hard drive and purchased a caddy. When I plug the hard drive in to my new desktop PC I am able to see that only 4GB of the 100 GB capacity is available (as should be the case). However, I cannot see any of my files on there (folders I had created on the desktop etc.). I really need to find the rest of my files as I have 12GBs of photos and videos of my baby boy on there, and would be gutted if I cannot access them again (for obvious reasons). Nothing else is important. Please help me if you can. Thanks.

If there is a better location for this question, please let me know.

Had administrator privileges on this computer (running XP) and had two large and critical "tracking files" that I've been working on for months, one in OpenOffice.org Calc, one in Jarte. I come back after my weekend and the bosses IT guy (whose shop is over two hours away) said there was some virus stuff on this computer, and that "some of the files were corrupt." So he makes then me a "User" and, of course, my two critical files are no longer here ... they are gone ... lost (or at least I can't find them).

1.) If I run a recovery program from a flash drive --assuming I can then find these two "corrupt files" -- is it possible to then copy or move such files to a CD on the same computer?

2.) Will my lack of "Administrator" privileges prevent me from performing number 1?

I have a sneaky feeling that the IT guy doesn't know what he is talking about (e.g., he's running AVG Free Antivrus on this business system). And what kind of effort is he going to put into finding or recovering such files when it isn't he that has spent so long building the files to begin with? (Obviously a rhetorical question.)

Thanks people. //cas

It wont detect corrupted fonts (not likely you have any corrupted ones anyhow) but you can very quickly view them all (scroll in the bottom box in the main program to see a quick preview of the fonts in wach category)

Off hand if an anti-virus program found them and quarantined them I would say there is an infection in them. They might be files that can be used on the computer but if they are carrying an infection of some sort they are usesless.

Hey everybody,

I have an HP pavillion a6200n, but thats not really important as all the hardware is ok as far as I can tell.

For a while I was getting random crashes once a week maybe, but after the last one the computer could not reboot. I get the blue BIOS screen and after that just blank screen as the computer cannot boot vista.

I have tried resetting defaults in BIOS, booting from system restore and checking the hardware (but didn't reformat), downloading and booting from a recovery disc and used the repair.

The repair found a corrupt boot sector but could not fix it. Upon entering the recovery disc it could not find an OS. None of the BootRec.exe commands worked and they could not find the OS either.

I have found people with similar problems, but with dual boot systems, using BootSect.exe but my computer could not find this command and I'm not using a dual boot system.

I also tried BCDedit in the command prompt but I got this response, "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The system cannot find the file specified."

I would rather not reformat my hardrive as it would take days to reinstall the software and I would lose a great deal of data that isn't backed up (/cry).

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, so here's the situation (my computer hardware isn't the issue, so I won't bother with posting my system).

There seems to be an installer or updater on my computer that is either corrupt, or not working with Windows 7. It will pop up in a small window every 4 hours or so (unexpectedly, so that's my guess) and then go away immediately. It does this so quick, the program doesn't even show up in the task bar, or display it's name. I noticed it has a "back" and "next" button, but that's all I can notice before it disappears. It wouldn't annoy me that much, but when I'm in the middle of a game, it will minimize the game when it pops up and goes away. It's gotten to where it's affecting my TF2 gameplay, so I'd like some help with trying to figure out how to determine what process it belongs to. I know it's not anything malicious, just a little glitchy program.

Is there anything I can use to record a list of ran processes over a period of time? (a program that lists all processes ran within the last 4 hours or something) I just need some help.

A:I need to find the name of this installer/updater that seems to be corrupt. How?

Check Event viewer -
START | type eventvwr.msc | "Custom Views" | Admin log

If nothing in Admin log related to the 4-hour app, check Application log under "Windows Logs"

Also check Task Scheduler -
START | type task |select "Task Scheduler"

I ran scan disk tonight. Now I want to find the log and when I used the finder to find Wininit it takes me clear back to a scan disk log I ran in 8/2015. Why do I not find the scan I did just tonight? I also clicked clear through that very long list for today looking for it manually. It's not there.

A:Can't find scan disk log

Follow the instructions in this tutorial.
If that does not work, run the scan again and follow the tutorial, again.

I have looked all over but can't find anything to do with disc scanning or defragmentation on my new HP Compaq.

Help please!
Many thanks.

A:How Do I Find Scan/defrag?

Go to Start...All Programs...Accessories...System Tools. Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter are located there.

Alternatively, go to Start...Control Panel (Classic View)...Performance Information and Tools for Disk Cleanup and other good stuff
Then, go to the Advanced Settings to see Disk Defragmenter and even more tools.

Guys, thanks for the help but here I would like ask a help for my problem. Let me explain it.

At first it begins after I uninstalled some games with revo unninstaller I uninstall it using logs from install monitoring feature of revo uninstaller. but then I realize my wifi icon at the taskbar doesnt show the signal strength when I am connected to the internet.

And so I restored my computer using system restore which is failed and show errors after reboot saying that the restoration was failed to replace files at c:\windows. I try it using older restore point and end up the same but then I read about clean boot and it works I was able to restore it succesfully and my wifi taskbar icon now showing the signal strength.

But it still let me wonder if my system is at a good state so I read more and learn about sfc /scannow.
I tried it 4 times or more and it always results in "find corrupt files and successfully repaired them" (need reboot). I give the link for my cbs log file hope you guys can help me.

A:sfc /scannow always find corrupt file and repaired it after 3~

SolidLove, try re-starting the PC in between sfc scans. Run sfc 3 times in this fashion (sfc scan - restart x3).

Unable to complete Verify and Repair transaction because some of the files that need to be repaired are in use. A reboot is required to complete this operation.

My computer needs rebooting/restarting every 9-10 days (no websites load, but an instant messenger remains connected?). It came time for me to restart, so I did. But Windows didn't load - it goes passed the bios(I think that's what the screen is) screen, starts the Windows XP loading screen... but never loads.

After this, I tried booting in safe mode - and it hangs/doesn't do anything after it loads MUP.sys. Googled the problem, found this page Recovering from a mup.sys boot hang on windows 2000 or XP. What is mup.sys anyway!. Since I did not see an option to reset ESCD in the bios, and I tried all other suggestions that applied to me except the AV scan one, I went on to #11 AKA Restore registry if Windows XP won't boot,frozen,locked-up or safe mode mup hang How-to

First step is "boot from XP install CD" - I didn't do this as I don't have an install disk, instead just going to the recovery console. My PC has/had a partition from HP from the beginning so I thought maybe I didn't need the install disk.

Followed all steps (chkdsk didn't fix the problem), no problem... until the "Restore base registry hive files from original installation" part. I tried the first command but got told no such file/whatever existed. HOWEVER, I checked the repair dir and indeed system does not exist, BUT system.bak did... as well as all the other files/whatever (not sam.bak, default.bak, but 'sam', 'default', etc.). So I tried doing the comma... Read more

HELP! I have always used the windows scan wizard to scan my documents and pictures. Today, I went to scan a document and I was only allowed to use one of 2 programs (muvee producer or picassa2), neither of which even opened to complete the scan. I have searched the computer, with no luck, trying to locate the scan wizard and reset it to default.
I was able to find the scanners and cameras section in the control panel, but it doesn't seem to allow me to add or locate any additional software to use for my scans.
Any suggestions? I don't know or like either program they are listing AND neither worked when I tried to select them anyway!

As reported elsewhere, I had some issues with my Win 7 installation which involved more fiddling than needed but most everything is working again. Why more than needed? In the list of possible solutions, I was given the one that fixed the big problem last. C'est la vie.

Now, I get to fiddle with fixing little problems. The latest is that Windows Fax and Scan are no longer working.

I have a modem in my computer solely for when I send faxes. With the way that they keep eliminating slots on motherboards, I don't know what I'll do when I upgrade but that's neither here nor there. Back to the story.

A couple weeks ago, I sent a fax without any issues. Today, I needed to send one and Window Fax and Scan couldn't find the modem. When I click on "Connect to a fax modem" I get "an error occured. Please try the operation later."

I opened a console and sent some AT commands to the modem and it responded. Off hook, on hook, dial. It is set as COM 3. I do have a Bluetooth dongle that is COM 6.

Before Win 7, I used WinFax Pro. I had been using WinFax for years and years and never had a problem. However, WinFax Pro doesn't work with Win 7.

One last question. When I started up WFS, it no longer shows my previously sent faxes. Where are those hidden? I say "hidden" because Microsoft seems to like to hide things that should be out in the open like your Outlook files.

A:Windows Fax and Scan cannot find modem

Wow! A lot of people are looking at this but no one has an input.

More information. I removed Windows Fax and Scan using Control Panel, restarted, re-installed WFS, restarted and . . . . no change.

I wish that I could find a half decent fax program, especially a free one.

Go to this Microsoft Support article dealing with using the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted files.  If you get that cleared up, then you shouldn't have a problem doing an Update to Vista Sp1.

I'm planning to reinstall OS etc. either on current HD or another if that would be better.
I set my box to scanning with check disk, and went out. When I returned the computer had rebooted and there was no message. Before I assume that it is safe to reinstall using this HD (about five years old), I'd like to run the data by someone who knows better than I do.
Can anyone tell me where to find the results of the scan?
Also, let's say the scan reveals no problems at all; anyone think I should replace the disk anyway?

A:How to find results of HD Check Disk scan?

...control panel - administrative tools - event viewer - in the left panel, "applications" - look for the entry "winlogon"...
...or RIGHT click my computer - manage - look for event viewer...
...even if you were there when it finished, the results flash so fast you wouldn't have time to read it anyway - as long as you had both boxes checked, (or used the "r" parameter if you used the command line to run it) the errors (if any) should be corrected...

I am trying to do a preboot antivirus scan but it does not recognize the Dr Web disk(disk works on my other win 7 laptop). It does have the cd as first option on boot. I am sure it is because of the UEFI/legacy option but I cannot find where to change it to legacy.

Secure/Legacy started with Windows 8 models. Are you tapping Esc key immediately after powering on? That should bring up a menu with F9 to select a one time boot option change to CD/DVD.

hi i have run the sfc scan 3 times each time it says it has fixed files? yet when i run again it says it has corrupt files?

see enclosed sfc scan results txt file ?

is something beyond repair or is there just lots of corrupt files and sfc can only do so many at a time so has to be re-run until there all done?

A:sfc/scan run 3 times still corrupt files?

The System File Checker (SFC) can only repair files that are in the mirror. And those are only the most important files. For a better resule you have to run a startup/repair with your installation/repair disc. That has a bigger inventory of files.

But even then there may be files that cannot be repaired - e.g. ,dlls that came with program installations that were not on the original installation disc but which were installed from the web.

It will take some time.
When it is finished, it will give you the report.

There is a chance you get the error code and message that " sources file could not be found ".
If that happens, please post back. There is a way to fix that.

Ok i did a bit of searching and found that running sfc/scannow in command prompt would display any errors as ive been getting non responsive programs and crashing computer for a few days now.
It finished and said this:
Ive tried to access the file but it says access is denied. I am the admin and only user on this computer so not sure why.
Any ideas what to do next??

A:Scan revealed corrupt files. . .what next?

Hi wales,

Try running it again; sometimes it takes more than one pass.

If there are still corrupt files, see How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7.

If you can't locate a good copy of a corrupted file, post back with details of the file(s).

Lastnight, I suddenly had warnings pop up from McAfee and AdAware Livescan that I had a trojan. McAfee asked for authorization to allow at least 2 registry changes, which I blocked. At some point, my desktop background disappeared, and I cannot browse from the properties window to set a picture back up. The Task Manager has also been disabled "by my administrator." Ran full system scans on McAfee and AdAware, and both came up with nothing.
