Preferred Solution: EXPLORER CRASHES AND RESTARTS, SHELL32 IS THE CULPRIT

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I was directed here from this post: Click Here.

To sum it up, my computer likes to restart explorer.exe constantly. Everytime I open something, it does it. It's not right after a reboot but it's about 15 minutes afterward. Any program or folder/file that I open prompts an error box telling me that Windows Explorer has encounter an error and needs to shut down. The Taskbar and desktop icons disappear, then about 10 seconds later they reappear and the Taskbar Tray is missing most of the icons that are usually on it.

I ran Windows Defender in Safe Mode and Norton Antivirus and both have deleted multiple files. That didn't fix anything. A friend told me to ground myself and open my case to make sure my fans are working fine, so I did and they move fine. Another friend told me to check my RAM sticks to make sure there are no small burn holes and I did, no burn holes. I have run Spybot, Ad-Aware and SpeedUpMyPC many times to fix problems, and Registry Cleaner aswell. They all delete a bunch of files but seem to be rather worthless.

I then went to the Newsgroups site where Claymore told me to run the Event Viewer and report the errors which revealed my shell32.dll having some sort of error. I have no idea what this means, and he directed me here to try and figure this out. I have been told I may need to run a Repair Install on Windows and I don't think I can do that.

Hi all. I have a very similar problem. Every time i try to the open control panel, either directly or any other component of the control panel from elsewhere, explorer.exe crashes and the culprit is shell32.dll (c:\windows\system32\shell32.dll). I tried all the stuff mentioned above but explorer.exe still crashes whenever I try to open the control panel. What should I do? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I have a brand new Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 20A7 with Windows 8.1 Professional. EXPLORER.EXE is crashing constantly. I disabled non-Microsoft shell extensions, applied all updates, even restored back to the factory image, but nothing works. Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

This happened recently after my sister downloaded something from the internet, and when I opened the folder to transfer it to her flash drive, a notification popped up telling me that, "Windows Explorer has crashed," and then it restarts (not the computer, just explorer. It sort of "refreshes" the desktop), then loads, and then crashes again.

I can still use my laptop normally from adjacent accounts, and when I tried deleting the file (the source of all of this, I'm assuming) it says that I need the permission of my main account, even though this account that I am currently using is also and administrator.

Can someone give me a little help? If there is none to be found I can use this side account for a while until something can be done, but it is incredibly inconvenient.

I am using Windows 7 currently.

I first noticed that explorer would crash a few weeks ago after I stumbled across an infected .wmf file while surfing the net. I was logged in under my limited account and my anti-virus detected the .wmf but it could not take action, I believe due to the fact I use system restore. I finally was able to delete the .wmf after which I ran several different scans and could not detect anything except Microsoft (R) HTML Application host had been altered (24,576 bytes to 24,064 bytes), so I replaced the file (note: explorer was already crashing before this point). The only time it seems to crash is once in a while when I click on My Document, Control Panel, My Pictures etc...

My explorer.exe constantly crashes and restarts; however, when I go into safe mode it works perfectly which means it is a driver problem. So I began to use the app, DriverView, to look at all the drivers I have and sure enough I find 3 very suspicious files that are most likely the cause to my problem.They looked suspicious because their file type was listed as unknown and their description was blank.the three files were:dump_dumpata.sysdump_dumpfve.sysdump_msahci.sysThey are said to be located at C:\Windows\System32\Drivers but when I looked there i couldn't find them. I tried scanning for viruses in normal and safe mode using AVG but I found nothing. I then uninstalled AVG and installed Avira. I also scanned in normal and safe mode using Avira but I still found nothing. The virus blockers i used also were updated. For some reason I just can't findi them. I have a problem that started yesterday. Every 30 seconds Windows Explorer (not the browser) crashes, then restarts. I run Xmarks within FireFox, I thought this was the problem because Xmarks as of yesterday asks me every 40 seconds if I want to sync my bookmarks, if I choose cancel, Windows Explorer will crash then restart.

When Firefox is closed, Explorer continues to crash and restart, almost every 30-35 seconds. I have Windows 8.1 up to date, with all the latest updates, FireFox is up to date. As of writting this post, Windows Explorer has crashed and restarted (5) times.

Hi this just started happening today. I'm not sure what happened to trigger it. I have run virus scan and it didn't found any infected files.

Explorer.exe will load when my machine starts up. About every 5-10 seconds, it will close, meaning my desktop blinks off. Another 10 seconds later (or around that) explorer.exe will start again and my desktop will come back.

Eventually, it stops trying to load and the desktop stays off. I can go to task manager and run explorer.exe to repeat the process of having explorer.exe run, stop, run, etc.

I don't receive any error messages when this happens.

This machine has the latest Microsoft updates incl service pack 2.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have had an on going issues with Vista crashing and then restart, some times it does it so quick that I hardly notice it because it was just the OS restarting not the computer rebooting. The how and why Vista would restart was unknown though I do remember a couple of times I would get a media player error but that was not consistant.

However, now the error is consistant and I can replicate it. On certain files, when I would RIGHT Click on the file to look their property Vista will crash and after scanning itself, restart up. At first I have not paid attention to the files in question but today I noticed that when I went to look at the properties for Gas Powered Games' Dungeon Siege 2, because it crashes every time I try to start it (I just reinstalled the game yesterday and while I ran into an online issue, was able to play the single player version fine but today when I tried to start the game it won't start and crashes).

I did two searches under Vista restarting and Vista restarting when Right Clicking properties and after reading the 75 results, there were a few threads that had very similar issues but they were locked and none of them had an answer.

So, let's try it again, anyone got a clue about this issue?

My system is an ACER, that I keep updated with Microsoft Update and protected by AVG as well as the Microsoft utilities.

Are you sure its not just Windows Explorer crashing? I don't see how the OS could restart but not the computer. Try typing sfc /scannow into your start menu. This will check you system files and repair them if they are indeed damaged.

Hello,

After days of troubleshooting via trying resolution methods from various forums, I finally have to submit a help topic, because I am out of ideas short of re-installing windows.

explorer.exe crashes whenever I do one of the following items:
- Right click on desktop to see display properties; the right-click menu never comes up; explorer just crashes. (I can get to the display properties fine through control panel.)
- Open up Start/Programs and enter an application sub-menu. Explorer doesn't crash until the sub menu opens, sometimes instantly, sometimes in a few seconds.
- Hovering over an icon on my desktop. Explorer does not crash when hovering over shortcuts, only when I hover over a file sitting on the desktop.
- Trying to open My Computer. A window opens up and the flashlight appears momentarily, then explorer crashes, which also closes the window.
- Trying to browse files via Start/Run or through Task Manager. Explorer crashes after several seconds, regardless of which drive or directory I am browsing. There may be an additional pattern there too as the time it takes explorer to die varies, but I have yet to determine a pattern if there is one. For Start/Run, the window closes, for task manager, sometimes the window freezes when explorer crashes and restarts, and the task manager icon in the task bar never goes away until I pass over it with my mouse.
- Trying to open up administrative tools from the control panel. Other controal panel options ... Read more

HI, I had no problems this morning, but after I put some videos from my camera onto my computer,and then tried to upload them to youtube, I couldn't do it. Internet Explorer kept closing and restarting everytime I tried to upload. So I went to firefox, same problem, then to chrome, same problem. Finally I decided to just go to the video on my computer and show it to someone, I went into the picture folder, and then Explorer closed and restarted. Hello,

So for the past month or so, explorer.exe has been crashing continuously. It happens on several occasions...

-Most notable when I first boot up Windows 7, it crashes and restarts in an assiduous manner, for maybe 10-15 times until it stops suddenly and starts working again

-When accessing files which force explorer to open, e.g. when I open a document, open the 'My Downloads' folder, and such locations (the crashing and restarting scenario occurs in every situation)

I haven't found a solution as of yet. I even tried ending the process in Task Manager and running it again... with the result of it continuing to freeze and restart even after I run it form Task Manager, until as usual, it suddenly stops crashing and starts working again.

Is there any possible solution to this which doesn't involve any type of System Restore/OS wipe?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. PC is defragged, registry and junk files cleaned using CCleaner and Disk Cleanup, issue still persists. SpyBotS&D cannot detect any malware, and ESET NOD32 cannot detect any viruses or infections either.

A:explorer.exe crashes and restarts when certain actions are performed

This is usualy caused by a bad file filter installed in explorer. And you can usualy trace it down to what type by noticing what files are in the folders you are opening.

Unless this happens at the default "libraries" or "Computer" entries as well...

Can you shed any light on where it does and maybe does not crash?

Did you install anything (Codecs, Office programs etc) just before this started?

I am the admin of the computer and logged in under my account but it does not matter what account I log in under it always crashes. Is there any other way to run the CMD sfc /scannow?

A:Problem- Right click on anything and explorer crashes and restarts

Hello Dave84 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

You can start up the System File Checker tool at the Start>Run command line. (refer to image attached)

That won't require any right clicking on anything. You could even add the Takeownership option to the right click menu but will need to first repair the present Windows installation since this sounds like one or more system files are corrupted.

The other thought on this is a possible malware infection leaving you with corrupted files like the explorer.exe sheil file used by Windows Explorer as well as the Computer desktop icon for browsing drives.

Hi. Today morning I started my PC and just after the start up Windows Explorer crashed and restarted and then did (and does) the same every 10-15 seconds. I googled the problem and did following steps (not in the same order as below) which didn't resolve the issue:

- restarted few times and switched off PC completely;
- tried to fix registry with Vit Registry Fix;
- did SFC /SCANNOW and it finished with information that some issues couldn't be fixed;
- ran Malwerbytes with no malware found;
- did a full Kaspersky Internet Security scan with no viruses found;
- did a clean boot (all non-windows services were not used) and it still crashed;
- did a diagnostic start up (so only basic windows services were used) and it helped;
- I wanted to do a system restore but Windows doesn't have data on any restores, meaning I probably haven't started the service (doesn't it make it automatically?);

Other info:
- system works fine in Safe Mode and diagnostic start up, thus eliminating issue with external applications;
- when in normal mode and crashing I looked at processes appearing and disappearing and found out that at the crash process the file dllhost.exe disappears then and shortly after appears back (it may or may not be relevant);
- I didn't do any major updates yesterday (only updated Steam platform and installed one new game);

Just an update - based on my experience with "fixing" the system, I've decided to back up the data and make a fresh installation (no point in loosing more time on trying to resolve the issue but just spend the time on new system and at least enjoy a faster Windows for some time). Funny though that a year ago I had to do the same due to some dll corrupt file (it was much worse then). I really love Microsoft!

HI
The until now decent list of apps that are crashing is slowly growing up so I wanted to sniff the culprit and remove it.
In all previous cases the problem was non obstructive but today I wanted to update Daemon Tools which caused an unrecoverable error in the uninstaller therefore I can't update which I already consider limiting.
All crashing apps invoke the same dialog Program XYZ stopped to work (lookup online solution/Terminate program/Debug program). So I suppose there's some latent problem with my OS and all the situations have the same common divisor. Now I would need some clues how to track it. Any helpful suggestions please.

A:Tracking down the culprit of multiple applications crashes

I don't like Deamon tools, have seen too many troubles with, if I get a computer with it installed I would not touch it if owner does not consent to remove it. I use and recommend Alcohol 52% that is free and does not make so many problems. Can also mount multiple images and has automount too. Windows8 can mount ISO images too

Hello everyone

im having an issue which i cant solve for quite some time,

my laptop will crash every now and then and it usually happened more than 3 times per day.
it is not an overheating issue as i had replace the thermal paste and clean the fans as well as the air duct, both fans are working properly.

i have tested my RAM using memtest86, however no errors were shown after 5-6 hours which i managed to pass 5-6 passes.

i noticed my laptop will crash whenever i watched a video (VLC with MKV or MP4 format) or i opened browsers(firefox and chrome) for quite some time. i noticed when my laptop crashed, usually i have a tab or currently playing youtube videos
my laptop is RARELY crash when i played games such as DOTA2 or Diablo3, it happened every now and then, but the ratio of my laptop crashing while playing games compared to watching video or steeaming youtube can be 1:10

there is no dump file created as it is not BSOD, my laptop just crashed and didnt restart, i need to boot it up manually as if someone just unplugged my cable from the wall.

i'm willing to do any test suggested, currently im doing Prime95 CPU Stress Test, but still no errors after 2 hours, im planning to keep it stressed until 6 hours or more.

please help me in this matter, thanks!

So, after having once again closed this issue down as solved it has again reared its ugly head.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/1084023-solved-cpu-usage-100-explorer.html

Its occurrence appears random. I can boot for days without the issue and then it will appear for no apparent reason for a few days and then disappear.

Each time it appears I try the clean boot process as set out in the earlier thread but it doesn't alter anything. It simply appears and disappears apparently randomly.

Any other ideas guys?

I have Windows 8 RTM installed and have noticed this since the very first day of using it. explorer.exe keeps crashing, say, when I'm opening folders with a lot of media content in them. Sometimes I can browse without any problems, and sometimes it crashes. I checked Event Viewer and ntdll.dll seems to be the culprit.

I've attached the SF zip file to the post. Could someone please help me out? I don't want to move back to Windows 7.

Many Thanks!

A:explorer.exe keeps crashing and ntdll.dll seems to be the culprit

I can't tell what's happening here from the dump file, as it's not a dump file that matches the crashes you're complaining about. The error message the application log mentions for the explorer crashes indicates virtual address space corruption, and from the logs the first Explorer crash starts almost immediately after you installed PlayOn, XBMC (which loads/uses a DirectX component, according to the logs), and then removed PlayOn on August 29th. I also notice Outlook, XBMC, and Splashtop's services are also all crashing with the same error code. There's not much those have in common other than the base OS, and the problems don't appear to have started until you installed one of these two apps. The dump file in the data you provided does point to your video card driver as a possible culprit too, which wouldn't surprise me. These drivers, if accurate, don't appear to be updated Windows 8 drivers, but beta Win8 drivers or (worse) Win7 drivers:

Hello,

I have problem with windows explorer. When i right click on Hard Disk C:, a message appears and saying "Explorer.exe must restart". I used eventvwr.exe to see what kind of problem was. It said that the problem is caused by the module shell32.dll. So i looked for solutions in Internet. I used the command sfs /scannow but it said none file was modified. Then i used Combofix in following instructions given on this forum.
So i need someone capable of reading files produced by combofix.

Hello new friends. I?m not sure if this is the exact area to post my problem here, but I cannot find anywhere else more appropriate. Forgive me if I missed it.

Here is my dilemma:

As of late, my machine?s Explorer has started to ?BEX64? crash when I have icons shown as thumbnails ... PDF, AI, TIF, JPG, PSD, Word, Excel and FireFox URLs (I use a program called ?Sage Thumbs? to render them). I also use ?Display Fusion? to control my two-monitor system. FWIW, I also use Kaspersky as an anti-virus, etc. My system is clean.

About a year ago, the problem started, but it was just an errant Google search URL. When I deleted that using a CMD command, all was fine again. Then it was eBay links that crashed it. Same fix. Now I have slowly progressed to the point where the system will not tolerate anything, i.e., the BEX64 crash happens every time I start Windows (unless I render all as icons).

As a workaround, I tried creating a new User, and all was good at first. But just as I was getting everything set up as before, the crash came back. FYI, the problem exists in Safe Mode as well with any Admin-based user. So, to reiterate, the only way I can now use my system is to keep all files relegated as icons, period. That option will not work for me.

I have spent days and days considering the problem on my own, trying all sorts of suggested tests and CMD-based remedies, including the CMD command "takeown /f MSVCR80.dll" and "regsvr32 MSVCR80.dl... Read more

Hey guys,
I'm kinda new to the forums, but looked all over for advice given to others to see if anyone else had my problem. Internet Explorer will open web pages, but anytime i try to open Windows Explorer or My Documents, etc. or try to go into Control Panel, i recieve an error message. It sends an error report involving iexplore.exe/explorer.exe and shell32.dll. I don't seem to have a problem running any other programs, it just won't let me open folders or look around my computer. I've scanned for viruses using Trend's Housecall and scanned for spyware using Ad-aware and Spybot.

I scanned using HijackThis, but i didn't see anything that would cause a problem. Everything mentioned in the log is something familiar to me. Here's the log:

Hi all. A few days ago, my computer got some malware through a friend's USB Drive. I tried scanning it using quite a few anti virus and anti malware softwares (avast pro, kaspersky, malwarebytes, even used a rescue disk and tried boot scanning) but it didn't detect anything and was unable to clean it.
I was unable to open MSConfig, System Restore or install any new applications. I ran windows in safe mode and disabled a few javascript files with weird names from startup in MSConfig. Now that problem is no longer there in normal mode and I can install applications and open MSConfig and System Restore (the previous restore points had been wiped off, though).

But in normal mode as well as safe mode, whenever I try to open the control panel or any of its components, either directly or through any other link, my explorer crashes and I am unable to open it. The fault module is shell32.dll.

Also, I was reading a different topic with a similar issue, wherein someone's explorer.exe crashed due to a different .dll file. A few commands executed in cmd was the solution provided there. Not knowing that it wouldn't really help, I applied the following  commands to shell32.dll and haven't reverted them yet:
takeown /a /f "c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\shell32.dll"
cacls "c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\shell32.dll" /g everyone:f

I did run sfc/scannow after reading somewhere about it but the verification finished without any errors reported. I do not want to... Read more

Pleased to inform that I have not been encountering Windows Explorer crashes or shut downs - at least since after my last post in sevenforums. In fact I tried to check if the problem is occuring again by 1) clicking the 'Explorer' icon on the taskbar. 2) Open folder hierarchy- as for me it is set to open automatically by changing the settings. 3) Right click a folder (e.g. C:\Program Files) a context menu should come out. 4) Click: 'Open in new window'. 5) Click the contents of a folder.. if it is .wma, Media Player should open.

I have done these and no error message or crash has appeared. Also have tried multiple times in several weeks.

I've modified the icons in my shell32.dll using Resource Hacker and when I've applied it Internet Explorer fails to start. It gives an error which reads,

"iexplore.exe - Entry Point Not Found"
The procedure entry point
shell32.SetCurrentProcessExplicitAppUserModeID could not be located in the dynamic link library api-ms-win-downlevel-shell32-l1-1-0.dll."

When I revert back to my previous shell32.dll which is also custom one, IE10 is working fine, so I think it is Resource Hacker that is causing this problem. I've tried modifying shell32.dll using Restorator 2007 but it gives me an error with "corrupt icon resource." I don't know what else to use to modify shell32.dll that won't make any problem with IE10. Any solution or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
