Can I use a Dell PA-3E charger in place of a Dell PA-10 charger?

Q: Can I use a Dell PA-3E charger in place of a Dell PA-10 charger?

I recently received a Dell Inspiron 6000 and a Dell Studio 1737 laptops from my uncle minus the chargers. A few years ago, both the original chargers died so they bought replacement Rayovac batteries for each laptop and a replacement charger. I guess it worked for a while until the batteries stopped charging. I'm assuming it was due to the charger not being OEM. Right now, I have the laptops running on an HP 19.5 volt 7.4 amp charger with the same polarity but none of the batteries charge and I get the error message on boot about using an unknown charger. So right now, I'm looking at getting an OEM charger to see if I can get the batteries to charge and to return the HP charger to my dad (it's the charger for his work laptop). I found this Dell PA-3E charger but I'm not sure if it will it work. It's the same voltage, amps and polarity but it's not the same model charger that's written on the bottom of the laptop. I'm afraid that the laptop will run but will not charge. Would this charge and work for both the Inspiron and Studio laptops?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't recognize charger any more. And unfortunately my warranty expired 2 month ago.It was plugged in and working in the morning, but then in the afternoon I noticed that it was running on the battery only. It wont start without battery (just charger plugged in).
1. So here what I have done to debug. Me and my brother, we have purchased the same Dell laptops at the same time a year and a bit ago. This is why for a debugging purposes it was good.I took my charger and plugged in to his computer. And it works. Definitely not the charger issue I guess. And when I plug charger in to my computer, green light is still on the charger. And I have the original charger that came with the laptop.
2. Now, laptop works on the battery only, so this means that motherboard is working. I guess.
3. Next thing I did was unplugged charger and removed the battery from the laptop. Then I pushed and hold "Power" button for 45 seconds to discharge a flea charge. Plugged charger back in but laptop wont start.
4. Next I started laptop on the battery, went to BIOS and checked if the charger is recognized in the BIOS. No, it doesn't recognize charger. So, if it is not a charger then what else can it be?
5. Laptop doesn't have any strange smells so I'm not sure if anything happened with the motherboard, but I would assume mother board is ok because it works of the battery.
6. I was thinking updating the BIOS, but I can't, because it wont update whi... Read more

A:Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't work with charger. Charger is not recognized. Not charger problem.

Hi CJ777,
Thanks for reaching out with your query. You pretty much figured out all points of failure. Good job.
If the adapter is not detected in BIOS, it most likely is an issue with the mother board. In the BIOS set up, AC adapter should show up as 65w or 90w. If the adapter status is 'None' or 'Unknown Device Installed', it indicates that the mother board is not detecting the adapter for which the battery is not getting charged. Once the battery charge drains, I'm sure the adapter will not charge it again. Replacing the system board should resolve this issue.

Just got the replacement charger for my laptop I ordered a few days ago. As I'm sure everyone reading this knows, on the Dell site, this little item costs about $140. Went to Amazon and paid $30. Plugged in the charger at both ends, powered up the laptop and got a message about it not recognizing it, blah, blah, blah. I selected continue anyway. Obvious point #1 - the laptop is working. Point #2 - hovering over the battery icon in the task tray says "70% available, plugged in, not charging."

So, just curious. The adapter even says Dell on it. I just didn't buy it from them. Knock-off? And of course my main question, is it going to work? Did a forum search before posting and I can see this isn't a unique situation, I'm just wondering what's up? Is this like a nag screen or am I actually going to have problems with this adapter?

And, it's late, I've had a shot or two of whiskey, so I have to say - you guys are the greatest! I love the internet. Middle of the night, I have a question, and I know right where to go to find a room full of people who know what I'm talking about. <read this with a slur> I love you guys hic-cup...

i recently bought a new battery charger for my dell laptop. it worked fine for a week or 2 but now it wont charge my laptop when i plug it in.
i've found that the charger when plugged into the wall outlet isn't turning on because the little green light that is usually lit on the box of the charger isn't lit.
so after finding this out i tried using someone else's charger and it worked for a day and the next day the same problem happened. what's going on? i hope it has doesn't have something to do with my laptop itself. please help!!

A:dell charger issues

First, some chargers need a load for the green light to come on.
If three chargers have died it must be your laptop that is doing it.

I have recently acquired an old Dell 1720 laptop that didn't come with a charger. I did have one for an HP that has the same specs as the Dell (19v @ 20watts) and plugs into the Dell ok. It runs the laptop fine and it shows "charging" but the battery shows only 2 lights (partial charge) and is stuck there. Any thoughts?

A:Dell 1720 charger question

Your best bet is to buy a genuine Dell AC adapter, however you can check the status of the AC adapter and battery in the BIOS.

1. Power off computer, and then make sure AC adapter is connected to computer well
2. Power on computer, quickly start tapping the F2 key continuously, you should be in the BIOS screen.

Under the main screen, look for the AC adapter type. If the adapter says None or Unknown then it's an issue with the adapter. Suggest you replace AC adapter.
Under the Advanced screen, look for Battery Health, it should say "This Battery Is Performing Normally". If there's any other message, it could mean that the battery is faulty and needs replacement.

Hi I just bought a used dell inspiron 3000 I hope this is the right form to post this question. Anyways I bought it and it does not have a AC power charger and it calls for 19v to charge and use.

I have a Universal 12v charger that fits it but it does not have enough power to turn it on but it does turn on the light on the charger. I try to keep it on the charger all night but still no results.

So I was wondering if anyone had any sugestion on what i could buy or use to get it to work (i look at walmart they dont have anything higher than 12v). I also try dell.com and they dont have it anymore and all the websites like ebay and other charge 25 dollars or more. I dont want to sink that much money into it unless i know it will actually work.

So please respond if you have any sugestions. Thanks

Well, my HP laptop charger is not working so I tried to charge with a Dell charger I had and it worked.

Now reading in the internet, I read that it might be dangerous especially since I am using less amps than specified. The specs of the 2 chargers are as follows:

HP Charger: 19 V, 4.74 A
Dell Charger: 19.5 V, 4.62 A

I read that the voltage difference should not cause a problem but using a lower Amp capacity charger than the original might. Will this small difference matter or can I still use the charger?

Thanks

A:Alternate charger for dell laptop

Not if you want to charge the battery, no.  If the power output is the same (voltage and current) and the jack fits, it may power the system but it will not complete the charge circuit - the battery won't charge.
You also run the risk of damaging the system if the jack is of different polarity.

Hello,
Perhaps anyone could advise what to do.
Just noticed that my laptop isn't charging, checked the charger and cable - and strangely, it's the following. After I unplug the charger for a few seconds, and plug back in - LED lights up in green, as usual, but after a few seconds it fades and doesn't come back up. No charging happening either.
If it were fully broken somehow, I'd expect it to be completely "dead", so maybe this is something that could be remedied? Any suggestions?

Nearly everytime i plug the charger into my M1330 (Running 32bit Vista Home Premium by the way) it comes up saying:

The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for the best system operation.

Very rarely after having to repetitively take out and plug in the charger whilst twisting it slightly as it goes in will it charge andnot run slow. But recently even after getting the charger in and having it start charging it still runs extremely slow. Whilst typing the letter i typed about 6 seconds ago has only just come up. When the charger isnt plugged in it is fine.

I had a problem with the motherboard on this laptop once and the motherboard was replaced. Since then the charger hasnt worked properly.

Any suggestions? Could it be the drivers, or do i need another new motherboard?

My laptop (Dell Inspiron 3520, Windows 8) is about a year and a half old now. Lately it has been having issues recognizing the charger when I plug it in. Sometimes it will show it's charging for a few seconds and then it stops. Often, when I restart or shut down and turn it back on, it will be fine and charge like normal. Other times, nothing is wrong and it charges exactly like it's supposed to. Right now, I've turned it off and on several times and it still won't charge. I don't know if it's the battery, the charger, or something wrong with my laptop.

edit: I left it on with the charger plugged in just in case, and now it seems to be charging intermittently; the light indicating it's charging will stay steady before it blinks and bit and goes back to being steady.

While it's possible the battery was damaged, it's far more likely the problem is a blown charge circuit on the system board.

I recently replaced both the battery & charger for my Dell Studio 1558 laptop. All was fine at first but on the 3rd day of use there was a popping sound from the charger & it no longer worked. The battery continued to work/discharge as normal. I then went to a local computer shop for a new charger & they loaned me one while they waited for the specific type to arrive.

The borrowed one would power the laptop but not charge the battery. It was a Dell unit & had all the same specs as my original charger except it was 65W whereas the original was 90W. I got the new one today (a Lavolta pa-eud 12) & the battery still won't charge, the battery meter shows "0% discharging". The input & output info on the Lavolta are the same as my original Dell but it doesn't specify wattage.

This isn't too big a deal as the laptop is used at home 99% of the time, my concern is could it possibly damage the computer & has it maybe damaged the battery?

Thanks in advance for any info/advice.

A:Solved: Dell battery/charger problem

They can't have the all the same output specs if the wattage is different. Wattage is the result of amperage multiplied by voltage. So the 90 watt adapter for this unit was 19.5 volts and the amperage was 4.62 amps, a 65 watt unit if still rated for 19.5 volts would only have 3.33 amps or so; so maybe not enough to charge the battery while power the laptop since it under-rated.

Also, Dell's are picky on the power adapters and check for an official Dell power adapter. If you are buying some cheap knock off units they may simply not work correctly.

Get a genuine Dell adapter and hope that none of the knock-offs damaged the laptop or battery, especially that one that failed on you.

I have a Dell Netbook that runs on Windows 7. When I insert the charger in, it doesn't charge. Well, it usually doesn't. Sometimes, after I push it in really hard and twist and jerk it around, it works, but I have to keep it absolutely still. As you can probably conclude, this is a giant pain. The laptop and charger are about two months old. The charger shows no obvious damage.

This is the second time this has happened. It happened with my Compaq laptop back in May '09. This doesn't happen to my sister's laptop. Or my dad's. Do I have a charger curse or something?

A:Laptop charger issue for Dell NetBook

The Achilles heel of all PC laptops -- the ever weak, ever breaking power connection in the laptop. I've never seen a case where this plug was damaged that it was not caused by abuse -- pulling sideways on that connector when it was plugged in.

And in every case, the user denies they did such a thing; but, there it is, the irrefutable evidence.

It has to be either a damaged cord on the charger or a broken socket in the laptop. And it is quite an expensive repair if the damage is in the laptop, which it almost always is as the laptop must be disassembled completely and the main board removed in order to repair it.

I bought the laptop from a guy I know and the PC is just 3 months old. But from the first day I got it I've been facing problems. I managed to get all the software problems fixed (Firewall detecting viruses where there were none, all my files turning into files of size 888kb, driver problems) but now another problem has come up.
Before yesterday it always seems like I have to press the power button twice before it turns on. Yesterday afternoon I pressed the power button twice and it didn't turn on, then I plugged it in and it turned on, and the battery was full. I removed the charger and it was still working so I don't know why it didn't turn on at first.
Later in the evening as usual I went to this place to use the WiFi there and after downloading some stuff I hibernated it and went back to my dorm room. Only to turn it on and be told that 'my battery is critically low' which shouldn't be so because I was charging it while browsing and the battery was at 100%. Hey, I've had this laptop for about a year or two now, and on about three separate occasions the laptop has reported that the charger is not recognised. On previous occasions I have had to call Dell and they send me a new charger which works fine for a few months until I get this problem again, and I have to repeat the process.
I guess it is that time again, because the laptop has stopped recognising my charger, and refuses to charge. How can I fix this and stop it from happening? I am sick of having to call Dell multiple times just to get a new charger, only for it to stop working a few months later. How can I fix this issue permanently? I am severely disappointed.

Hi buggycobra, Thanks for posting. Apologies that your computer is not working as you expected. In researching this for you, it appears that if the charger plug is inserted and removed multiple times, the internal connection to the motherboard can become defective thus giving a "not recognized" error.  You may need to have the motherboard changed to keep this from happening. Please contact Tech Support in your country to troubleshoot.  Thanks.

I have a Dell 17" 1720 Laptop

Every few seconds there is a delay when using the Touchpad, then it will work for a few seconds etc

USB mouse is fine

Here's the weird thing - problem goes away when running on battery

The charger that is rated at 6 AMPS works ok - no problems with Touchpad

The smaller one (although advertised as working with the 1720) is what causes the problem - it is rated at 19.5 V 4.62 A = 90 W

The larger one is same voltage - 6.2 A and 130 W

No other issues other than the intermittent touchpad....

Any ideas ?

Hi

Get the PSU tested with a volt meter, if its outputting a voltage then the Mobo is faulty, as Dell failed to send you a replacement within the guarantee period you could argue its their fault and that had they sent you the correct PSU inside the warranty period then you would have know it was a Mobo issue and as such it would still have been covered by warranty, however as they delayed sending the correct part out your warranty expired....

The charger port in my Inspiron has become broken over time, due to the charger that was sent with my laptop not working properly, (Where when the charger is plugged in, it comes up with a message saying that it's plugged in, but not charging. During that time as well, the plastic bits inside of the charger port has come out, leaving only the two tiny metal bits that the plastic covered. It still charged my laptop when i got the charger to work. Since a few weeks ago, when the charger completely broke, I left it alone and used a spare laptop. A new charger finally came for my laptop and it does not accept any charger whatsoever. Not even showing the LED that it is charging. My laptop still has warranty, but I don't know whether this would be covered. Can anyone help?

It'll be deemed abuse/accidental damage - the warranty will not cover the repair.
If you can replace the part yourself, it's this one:
www.parts-people.com/index.php
If you can't, a local computer repair shop can replace it - costing about an hour's labor charge.
You're better off with a reputable local shop that charges by time -- not one of the big chains (Staples, Best Buy, or even Dell) that charge a flat rate for the repair.  Flat-rate will almost certainly cost more.

My Dell XPS 13 has recently been unable to recognize my AC adapter. I've tried several outlets and chargers, but to no avail. Once I plug the charger into the laptop, the charging light on my Dell lights up for a second but turns off immediately after.
I am unable to get past the Dell SupportAssist and it seems to be an endless loop that won't allow me into my desktop.
Would I be able to bypass the "AC Adapter Unknown" error by using Google's Pixel 2 charger? It would allow me to charge through Dell's USB-C port instead. Has anyone tried this method or has solved the issue in any other way?
Thanks for any help at all!

I am currently using Dell Vostro 14 3000 laptop. For past few days whenever i tried to on the laptop it shows this message
" Alert! The AC power adapter and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available
Strike f3 key if you do not want to see the power warning message again
to continue press f1
To change setup option press f2 key
to run onboard diagnostic press f5 key "
why this problem is occurring? what is the possible reason of this problem? Is there a battery problem or charger problem or motherboard problem?
Please help me to fix this problem.

Hi Need some help, I have an inspiron 5100 that I bought couple of year ago. few month back I noticed that the machine is not charging the battery when the laptop is on. as sson as I shut down and turn off teh laptop, teh charger stats working on the battery. So I don't beleive it is a battery problem but rather a charger one, I'm wondering if someone know if it is a software related and how to fix it.

thanks

Check very carefully for full contact from the charger points, and the best way to clean them is with a pencil eraser, followed by denatured alcohol and a queue tip. The contacts do become weak or bent, which can cause the problem.
There is no software that affects that model, but there is a chip in the battery that counts the number of full charges. Onces it reaches that magic number, it stops further charging even though good otherwise. This is to prevent fire and other damage as the battery ages.
Otherwise, you need someone with experience using a soldering iron, to replace a couple of doohickies inside the case.
