Preferred Solution: One user account can't access internet but others can

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

When I try to access internet on one of my user accounts I get an "Unable to find proxy server" error message, while the other user account works fine?!

I'm using Firefox Vers 3.6.8 on both accounts.

I've checked network settings & the account that's not working says it's connected to the LAN.

We had no problem before, the only difference is that we recently switched ISP's.

Thanks,

Hey Guys,

I'm having a fairly similar issue to this one. My boss at work (who is completely computer illiterate) decided to install Norton Internet Security on his own. And now the HotelGuest account which is a Limited User account can't access the internet at all. I have tried serveral solution on my own - uninstall NIS, delete user account and then recreate it, reinstalled NIS and triple checked NIS user settings to insure account was active and allowed Internet access, I even tried the one suggested here, which caused an odd occurence. Once the Limited account is changed to Admin the internet works and once its changed back it stops again, and since this is a public computer leaving it set to Admin(my boss's suggestion) is completely out of the question unless I want to spend 10 hours a day cleaning up Porn, P2P appz, and otherwise "Duct Taping" this POS back together.

Any ideas that may help with this issue are great appreciated and welcome.
Thanks in advance,
Arminius

Aright...so, I have a limited user account on my laptop (windows xp home sp2) and I'm trying to allow this user to access the internet via my wireless LAN.

The limited account can access the internet through a dial-up connection, and my virus update software can connect to the net through the wireless network, but when I try to use Internet Explorer while logged in as a limited user, there is no internet connection available.

How do I allow the limited user to access the internet?

A:Limited user account can't access internet!

Change the limited user account to an admin account open up IE and run the wizard (tools/internet options/connections/setup) and make sure its setup for your type of network. Once you have it opening up webpages change the account back to limited.

How can I get access to all my encrypted files regardless of which logon I use?

Umm...if you could access encrypted files from another user that would remove the whole point of encrypting the files to begin with.

According to the windows.microsoft.com website "Your user account prevents anyone who is using a standard account on your computer from seeing your files." My wife and I share our computer: I have an administrator account and she has a standard user account. Yet when she is logged in she can access my documents and read them via File Explorer, though she cannot delete them. This seems to contradict what Microsoft say or am I missing something? Grateful for any advice.

Since writing the above I have found that the same situation exists on the other computer that we share, but in this case she is able to delete the documents as well.

Sorry, everyone, I think I've solved this. I must have set particular sharing permissions and forgotten I'd done so.

I added a password to my Admin account on my Windows XP desktop PC; it is the only account on the computer. When I added the password (through Control Panel - User Accounts), the system asked if I also wanted to block other users from accessing files on my computer, since even if I added a user account, they still would be able to see my files. So I said yes to the question.

Then I discovered that I could no longer access any shared folders on the desktop from my networked laptop. I deleted the password on my desktop pc, but it still won't let me access the files from my laptop. In Control Panel - User Accounts there is no option to unblock access to files. I tried my computer's help, but there was nothing there.

In Windows Explorer - Sharing, all the folders that I want to share across the network have the proper boxes checked, but they are now disabled.

This is occurring on my home system.

Does anyone know how to undo the file folder blocking?

Thanks.

A:User Account File Access

Try Setting Permissions for a File or Folder

To set the permissions for a file or folder:

Use Windows Explorer to locate the file or folder for which you want to edit the permissions.
Right-click the folder, and then click Properties.
Click the Security tab.
To add a new access control setting to the folder, click Add.
Select the users, computers, or groups that this access control setting is applied to, click Add, and then click OK.
To remove an access control setting, click Remove.
To edit the permissions for any group, select the user or group, and then use the corresponding check boxes in the Permissions pane.
Click OK to accept the settings, click Cancel to cancel any changes you have made, or click Apply to apply the changes without closing the file or folder properties.

Go to Control Panel, User Accounts and see if your account type got changed. If it did, you will need to log in as an Admin to change it back.

You say you can't access programs except MSN (but Spybot and McAfee are programs, too, so you must be able to access some things). What happens when you try to run other programs?

Two ways: easy & defficult

1.Easy:Boot DVD Vista

Hello, I hope someone can help, I booted up my PC today and it won't complete the log in process, I get to the log in, enter my password, hit enter and it just sits there with my user name and welcome with the little dots spinning around.

I have 3 other unused accounts on the PC from back in the Windows 7 days that have never been logged into, so I tried one of them and it worked fine and went through setting up the user account. All user accounts are Administrator. But I just can't access my main account. Using one of the other means that I will have to go through all the settings for my apps again and reactivating them it appears, some stuff only allows a minimum amount of activation, I really don't want to have to go down that path, this is a DAW only machine used for music production with a lot of software and literally thousands of plugins, quite possibly a lot of work if the majority require reactivating and setting up.

I do have a recent backup image with Acronis, whether or not that will work once I try to restore it who knows. But if it was possible to gain access to my login would be much prefered, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

This did not occur after a Windows update or anything, I have kept my PC on version 1511 of Windows 10

Thank You

Hi again,

As I am new to networking, I hope this isn't too noob a question. I have 4 machines on a network with a router/hub. I have various things stored on different machines, and don't really want to put them all in a central location. My question is that the way XP seems to work is that in order for one machine to log into another, each machine must have a seperate user name on each computer. Normally I foundn't find this to be a big deal, but now when you turn on the computer, you have to type a password when logging in (turning on) the machine. Before it would automatically log in that user. Is there some way to have all the permissions set for each machine but avoid this log hassle? With the exception of the kids machine, all the users would stay the same all the time. There wouldn't be a need to have so many accounts. The way I have it set up now, everything works but there are 4-5 accounts on each machine. Is there a better way?

Thanks

I can't seem to simply create a second user who has no access to files/programs on the computer by default. From what I read, that's supposed to be the default behavior? When I try it, the new 'Standard user' account can see all programs and files. I haven't previously changed permissions or anything on this PC.

A:Standard User Account - File/pgm access

In the User Account - Create you should be able to use Parental controls to limit programs and file access (although I haven't had to do so myself)

You should be able to create a standard user accounts on your computer and reserve administrator permissions for your user account, you’ll have to type your account’s password whenever a standard user wants to install or access restricted programs.

After that I believe you can right click on any application and set the permissions (or disallow run)

You could also use Group Policy Editor - Quickly View Enabled Policies in Windows

If you have Windows Ultimate you could also use AppLocker - Create New Rules

My 15 year old son was trying to bypass Cyberpatrol and in the process of tring to change his account from an adminstrator to a standard user I've made things worse. I changed the administrator account in his name to a standard user account but there was no other administrator account on the PC other then something called CYBERPATROL_SERVICE which is an administrative account istalled automatically by Cyberpatrol. This was the first mistake. Then he guessed the password to Cyberpatrol and attemped to uninstall it...it only 'half' uninstalled it, leaving a real mess of error messages and no access to let me change anything. I can now neither reinstall cyberpatrol or unistall it, nor can I see a way to log back in as an administrator to effect any changes to put things right. Three emails to cyberpatrol have elicited no response so I'm coming to the conclusion the onlu way out is to reinstall Windows 7 and find a different web filtering program- is there any way to log back in a an administrator? I didnt delete the admin account, only changed it to a standard type. Then If I can get back in as a administrator how can I get rid of the unwanted Cyberpatrol?

Any suggestions for how to do this, or whether it is even possible?

I have a user account on 3 of the 5 PC's and when logged on to any of the 3 with my account and I try to access any of the other 2 PC's that I also have a user account, I get the following:

\\computername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions
The network address is invalid.

I can access the 2 boxes that I dont have a user account while logged on with my user account from any of the 3 with my user account. Its definitely a user account issue. Is there a possible name conflict? I cant figure it out and nothing similar with google.

4 boxes are win 7 pro 64 and one is vista home premium 64

Are you certain that the computer names are all different on every machine?

Are they all part of the same Workgroup?

I cannot find the solution to this anywhere for months now. I've had to do a clean reinstall of my win xp HE. My old user account has dissapeared from user accounts. its still in win explorer is "documents and settings" but every time i try to access it, it says access is denied. Also tried doing so in dos, and with other various programs. I've managed to get the files from within the folder using "getdataback for ntfs".
Would appreciate it if you could help me.

I have 2 accounts on my PC, one is admin the other std user.

I have installed STEAM on the PC via the admin account and the std account can access STEAM and STEAM is in the start-up for that account too.

How can I install programs on the admin account and not have them available to the std account?

Hi,
after I started up my new Dell inspiron with Vista Premium 32bit , I set up an admin account for myself and two additional user accounts for my kids. While I was logged on one of the kids messed with the account info. Now I am locked out of the admin account, but am still able to log in to my kids account.
Is there any way to recover the admin account or create a new one without having the old info?
thanks

A:lost administrator PW, still have access with one other user account

Hi Bayern, and welcome to Vista Forums.

This tutorial may be able to help you by resetting the password for that account. You may need to use Method Three.

Reset User Account Password

Hope this helps,
Shawn
