IE won't connect to internet, but Chrome is working fine. Other software wont connect to internet either.

Q: IE won't connect to internet, but Chrome is working fine. Other software wont connect to internet either.

I just bought this laptop about 10 days ago to use specifically for a writing project separate from my other work laptop. It has Windows 7. It had Google Chrome installed (or maybe my brother installed it upon taking it out of the box.) I have
used IE as my browser on this laptop once or twice, but mostly use Google Chrome. I downloaded some genealogy software I just bought today about an hour or so ago (Family Tree Maker 2012) and noticed that it would not connect to the internet to register- it
kept saying "No internet connection". After trying a few things (allowing the program access through Windows Firewall, checking to make sure that "proxy server" tab was not checked in Internet Settings, disabling some Bing Maps and Windows
Live email accelerators) and finally tried closing Chrome and opening IE to run in background instead. However, IE won't connect - keeps saying "Cant display webpage" although I am definitely connected to internet via wifi. I tried resetting Internet
Explorer...no dice. I've restarted several times. Nothing is working. Any suggestions?
My husband thinks i should uninstall Chrome, which he guesses is causing all the trouble with both IE and the Family Tree software. But I'm afraid that if I uninstall Chrome and it doesnt work, i wont be able to get back on the internet since I can presently
only do so through Chrome.
I dont have a whole lot of experience troubleshooting computers, so please be specific!

Thanks so much!

Preferred Solution: IE won't connect to internet, but Chrome is working fine. Other software wont connect to internet either.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: IE won't connect to internet, but Chrome is working fine. Other software wont connect to internet either.

Uninstalling Chrome should not be nessesary it does have an agressive default install which should not be used but uninstalling will not fix any issues because chromes uninstall will not change
setting back the way they were before you installed it/ or who ever.
Reset ie9 manually,
Click the Start button on the Taskbar,
Click on Control panel,
Click on Internet options,
Go to the Advanced section,
Click on Reset button on the bottom,
Check the box to Delete personal settings,
Use the recommended setup and install options.
Also see this,
New computers come with pre-installed security suites/ Trial versions,
The best thing to do with these trial versions is to Uninstall them,
Use these instead,
Freebie from microsoft,
If money isn't an issue add the full pro version of malwarebytes, less than mcafee or norton,

Then use the free version of this as well for even more ways to clean your machine,

Trying to connect to internet using IE9 says no internet connect detected, but chrome works fine. I'm running Windows Vista. Also trying to download AT&T U-verse McAfee but no internet connection detected or McAfee server not available. I also have Norton loaded.

A:IE9 won't connect to internet but Chrome works fine

some things to try, disable all installed addons and toolbars to see if one is causing the problem. go to advance options in settings and return ie to default, go into safemode with network to see if you can get online.

A friend has a slight issue. I am sorry i do not have there pc specs to hand. The internet is fine & the hub was checked by virgin. When you view the connection manager it shoes 3 icons on the home network. A bridge from there PC, to the router(which is green) then a bright to the internet thats black with a X in the middle. The tool tip display on the internet connectivity system tray says "local connect only" i did manage to get "Local connect & internet" once but it still would not connect. The diagnostic tool could not resolve the issue. But it says check your domain name server(DNS)

What programs can i run? I was thinking maybe dial a fix but could not get connected to download it? I will also run MBAM & remove AVG and replace it with another. Any suggestions?

Please remember i am not by or near there machine until tomorrow.

I have a new DELL XPS M2010 that I want to connect using wireless card. OS - Vista, Linksys Router, when I try to "Diagnose and Repair" I get the response "Cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server".

It's showing an Excellent connection to the route, but will not connect to the Internet. I've tried a few things, such as connecting to other unsecured wireless internet connections and I was able to connect to the Internet then. I also looked at another thread on this site that suggested to add a DNS Server to the list of and nothing happened with that.

Other PCs in the house, all on wireless, connect fine (obviously including the laptop I'm posting on right now). Still searching the forums for similar solutions - here is my ipconfig information:

SOLUTION: In typical techie fashion as soon as i ask for help I solve the problem. I did crtl + r -> ncpa.cpl -> properties -> configure -> advanced -> network access -> Type in the unique address seen for the network adapter when ipconfig is run, type it without dashes. This worked immediately.

My PC is Windows 8.1 and it hasn't had internet issues before. Last night it stopped connecting to the internet. This morning is has been the same. Wireless connections are working fine but my desktop doesn't have a wireless card so i need to fix the wired issue with it.

I've tried the ethernet cable on other devices and they work, so i think it must be PC settings. I PC restored to last night 7pm and it didn't fix it. I've tried ipconfig /release and /renew and it didn't work. I've tried uninstalling AVG and turning off firewalls. I still am getting the yellow triangle with "no internet access"

IPv4 Address
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway

I've tried updating network card drivers and disabling and re-enabling it. Anyone able to help please?

A:Can't connect to internet wired from desktop. Other devices working fine.

and welcome to the Forum

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Remove all the stored wireless network profiles and search for the network again.

How to Remove Stored Wireless Network Profiles for XP, Vista, and Windows 7

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found here's how.

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type or copy and paste the following command:

ipconfig/all > 0 & notepad 0

and press enter.

Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB drive, or a CD-R disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I'm not really sure where to post this, please move if needed.

My internet connection is fine, programs such as MSN work, but when I go to either Internet Explorer it displays the 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage' notice on every page that I try to connect to, also displays a 'Page loading error' notice on every page that I try to visit.

The problem appeared to start when I installed an update for Firefox, and at the time I had an old version of IE which worked fine, although the updated Firefox did not display any pages, I decided to update to IE8, because the version I had installed was pretty ancient, after which IE also began to display this problem.

I have fiddled with my firewall settings, to no avail.

Incidentally I am now using an old version of MSN explorer, which works to display webpages (which is how I am managing to post this!) I am guessing it is something to do with the updates, although I'm not an expert.

Any clues as to what I can do to fix it (I don't want to be stuck with this awful MSN browser!)

Thanks in advance

A:Internet connection working fine, browsers can't connect to any sites.

Try opening a command window (type cmd into yor run box and click ok)
Then type 'netsh winsock reset' and hit enter.
You should get a message 'successfully reset winsock catalogue' or similar.
then restart your computer

I'm having a problem getting my Internet Explorer on my desktop, or Chrome to connect to the internet. My embedded version of IE will connect and I can browse the web, but when I try to download anything, I get a message telling me it cannot connect to the internet, even though I know it's already connected. All my other applications connect ok. The message I get is the simple "This page can't be displayed". I have tried various other tips from this site such as not using proxy sites but none seem to work. Can you please try and help me sort this as I really don't like the embedded version of IE!

A:No apps connect to MY internet, but connect fine on my neighbours net?

Try checking out your router setup it may be blocking those programs. You may need to login to the router and "enable" the programs as I notice they are P2P programs and quite often you have to permit their use. Try googling for "enabling p2p on my xxxx router" where xxxx is the make / model number

Hello there,

I am using a program called Intervoip (v4.05) that can make phone calls over the internet.

I have been using it with my network here for a while but a couple of days back I cleaned my hard drive and reinstalled it and now it wont connect to the internet anymore.

Now, the proxy server is proxy.stusta.mhn.de, with port 3128 (3130 also seems to work somehow) with my browsers.

In the Voip programs advanced connection settings tab, there is a "Use Port" setting.. I entered 3128 here but it still cant connect

There is no other setting where I can enter the actual address.. only a port number. I tried it out at an internet cafe with WiFi and the program worked fine today.... but back home on the network and it doesnt work anymore.. just keeps trying to connect to the internet without luck. I also tried it without any port number but that didnt work either.

I am on Win XP SP3. Please note that this software was working over this network all these days somehow ( I am not sure whether I had the port number entered in there or not though). It used to take a minute or so to connect but it used to, nonetheless.
Any suggestions?

P.S. Attached is a screenshot

A:Voip software wont connect through Internet via proxy settings

It's good to know that hardware malfunction isn't the issue. That would be another hunk of change in order to replace it.
I don't think that wiping the hard drive was a part of it either.

Do you have the program loaded on an external storage device, or did you also just load up the program at the cafe?

I have a new router connected to my internet from FIOS. I was sick of the ActionTec router requiring a reboot every few days in order to get it to hand out ip addresses again, so I purchased a Ubiquiti edgmax router. After changing the MAC address of the
router to match the MAC address of the actiontec router, I was able to get it functioning. Sadly, that's when the weirdness began. I am able to connect to the internet fine on almost all my devices. I have two Roku streaming media players and an Ooma Ip phone
box that connect to the internet fine with the new router. All my iOS devices connect fine to the internet. I have a dual boot desktop connected via Ethernet and when I boot to Linux, it connects to the internet fine. If I reboot to Win7 (same exact hardware!),
there is no internet connection. I can see the other devices in the network map (I see the Brother printer and the Roku boxes) that are on this side of the firewall, but Internet access past the firewall is not available (red X between router and Internet).
I have done a virus scan using both MalwareBytes and AVG (in safe mode), and there are no virus found by either. I can reconnect the crappy Actiontec router and everything is fine. I also tried bringing the router, wifi access point and Win7 laptop (that
was NOT connecting to the internet at my home) to my office and connected it all here, and it works fine!
To say that I am frustrated would be an understatement.

I have just made this account so I am worried I may be posting this is the wrong place, if I am I am sorry. But that aside i need some help.
first I use windows ten and my computer is A lenovo. Thats what it has on it so i think i am right.I just bought it in January.
that aside, I cant seem to get any of the programs on my computer to connect to the internet, programs like skype and steam more specifically. Theyre the only two programs that cant be opened in the computer browser so im thinking that thats a sign of something. The internet on my computer works fine, i can go though stuff on the internet and make calls like skype with fb messenger just fine. Im posting this on the google chrome browser right now.
Wifi and internet are working perfectly in that aspect. even when i travel to the library and school and use that wifi there everything is fine with browser based things, but these programs no matter what wifi I connect to tell me that they are having trouble connecting and cant do it. They both used to work pretty ok. I was playing a video game that i cant play anymore because I cant connect to steam and i can no longer share screens with my friend to help me do homework because of skype.
my friend told me to uninstall them and reinstall them a few times but ive done them both exactly 8 times and It is the same result over and over.

I can browse everything from my IE9 64-bit browser (even windows update) and I am starting this question using the same
computer I am having trouble with. DNS from a DOS prompt. My RPC service is working correctly (I think). I have no proxies enabled. I get the same result in normal mode or in safe mode with networking. I have run several AV programs but most said no issues
and one said it found problems but it was just cookies. I have tried disabling my firewall.

IE9 32-bit and anything that connects thru the IE9 32-bit internet connection path doesn?t
reach the internet.  When I try using the diagnostic program that pops up it says my connection is fine. I have tried reinstalling my Winsock, repaired my TCP/IP, and manually added exceptions into
my firewall but none of this has helped.  I didn?t add any new programs, prior to it breaking.
I did have Norton but when they tried to help me they had me delete the app and I lost the logs so I don?t know what virus initially started this mess.
Initially I used system restore to try and fix this but it didn?t help. (went back two weeks)
Whatever is different between how IE9 64-bit and how IE9 32 bit access the internet is
the source of my problem.  And other applications that connect the same way as IE9 32bit does also do not access the internet. One caveat to this is uTorrent.

I have not had much luck with the network diagnostics in Windows 7 myself, a few points for you, however: what do you have for a NIC driver in the Device Manager, Network Adapters? What does your connection status look like in Control Panel, Network and Sharing Center? Try to run "IPCONFIG /ALL from a command prompt, if you are getting a 169.254.x.x address (Automatic IP Addressing), then you will not connect. Suggest resetting TCP/IP from an elevated command prompt, since you cannot connect to the Internet, I have provided the process for you:
For Windows 7 and Windows Vista
To open a command prompt, click Start and then type cmd in the Search programs and files box.
Under Programs, right-click the CMD.exe icon, and then click Run as administrator.
When the User Account Control box appears, click Yes.
At the command prompt, enter the following command, and then press Enter:

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Note If you don't want to specify a directory path for the log file, run the following command instead:

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
Also, try turning off the Windows Firewall as a troubleshooting step. Hope this helps.

I seem to have a strange problem.
See, recently Internet Explorer has stopped working on my Vaio. After that Opera (the one I use the most) stopped as wel, saying that it can't connect to the server. And 2 day's ago Firefox started doing the same thing. But my internet connection is perfect! MSN messenger works fine and the browser in LimeWire works as well. But I don't want to stay stuck with that so I used System Restore. I restored my computer to a point ten day's ago. In the beginning IE worked again, Opera and Firefox didn't. But I was happy enough with that. So I shut my computer down yesterday evening. But now, when I started my computer up again, IE doesn't work anymore either!
I'm now using the browser in Windows Media Player.
I have no idea what could have caused this. I only know that Opera stopped working after I had installed a new version of it (9.60).

If anyone has any insperation as to what the cause is or where the problem might be...

I posted this thread on Club Vaio Forum and they seem to think it's some kind of malware. I've seen another thread on this site about someone with a simmilar problem but there wasn't any solution given.
If anyone could help me out?

pretty stumped with this. All seemed to be fine until I accepted to try some AVG anti-virus thing for free yesterday morning..I have AVG on my PC and the invitation seemed to be coming FROM the program, now I suspect not.

- Can't connect to the Internet.
- I can connect to my wifi network AND to the internet from my phone, laptop, PS3 and PS4.

This is what I've tried and what I have done that I think may have made the problem worse. Ugh.

- I tried uninstalled AVG, when I couldn't uninstall one of the programs titled "avg protection" (there were 2 and one uninstalled fine), I deleted the file folder alltogether. Still didn't fix it and it seems like part of the program froze upon installation which prohibited me from uninstalling AVG properly. I kept getting a message saying "you can't uninstall this program without uninstalling programs associated with it first..." or something to that nature. I tried to uninstall "avg protection" but it kept restarting the installation from the beginning but couldn't do anything because it needed an internet connection. Ugh. I feel that deleting the AVG program from my PC may have been a bad move after doing some reading.

- I tried system restore to a few different points. NOPE. Tried it through safe mode..NOPE.

- I run the network diagnostics tool. It tells me to unplug my router/modem...wait three minutes, blah, blah...when I click continue I get "runtime error prog... Read more

I have an annoying issue with my internet connection. From time to time i can't connect to Steam, Battle.net or download from torrents (I'm mentioning torrents becuase there might be a connection). I share the internet with 10 other people all of them connected mostly via wi-fi. Is is possible that the connection is too low to connect to the already mentioned above servers? There is nothing wrong with my pc or internet settings because it works fine for a week and then all of a sudden not. Once we tried to hard reset the main router and after that it worked just fine.

Firefox and IE won't connect to the internet or load any of the pages. The internet connection is fine. I thought it was the router/wireless at home...I took it to work and it connected to the wireless here. It was fine...I just can't get my browsers to load. I have vista and the latest version of firefox and IE

I've checked:
1.)Anti-Virus/Malware software - Scanned, and disabled temporarily to see if this was the cause: It was not.
2.) Router/Wireless - Says connected. I've pinged a few addresses and they're all responding
3.) Firefox Setting: It's directly connected to the internet; no manual proxy setting or anything
4.) IE Setting: Ditto
5.) An IPConfig run shows that things are working fine, connection wise...I wonder if I missed something or screwed up the settings somewhere.
6.) Re-installed Firefox and IE: Nothing changed

I have two computers, both running Win 7 Pro.  One performs normally in all ways.  The other was fine until a few days ago;  we moved from a hotel WiFi network to a residential cable modem/router, and anything requiring an internet connection suddenly became very unreliable.  Browsers spin their wheels endlessly, Outlook 2010 won't connect to the Gmail IMAP servers, and so on.  The network connection is fast and stable from the other computer.  Both computers run Avast Internet Security, with weekly full scans scheduled.  Both the hotel and the residential networks have been treated as public networks. A quick scan with Avast revealed no malware on the malfunctioning computer.  The good computer is an old HP Pavillion DV7 4070us, the bad one is a newer Sony Vaio VPCSC1AFM. Nothing else has been changed recently.
I tried Malwarebytes.  Initially, it balked at the update, but after a restart it updated its database successfully.  It froze when I tried a scan.  I ran Rkill (nothing detected) and TDSSKiller (no threats found) then Malwarebytes again (no malware found.)
I also have tried changing DNS servers, and disabling IPv6.
I have tried the malfunctioning computer on a guest network at work, and have experienced no difficulties there.  That points to something on the residental network that isn't getting along with something on the malfunctioning computer.  I'm not knowledgab... Read more

Firefox works as usual.
Network Magic shows a good connection; the internet speed test gives normal readings.
However, IE 7 will not connect. I get the message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". Also, Microsoft Update cannot connect. I have tried the following:
- rebooted many times
- reinstalled IE 7
- repaired & reset WinSock
I don't really care about IE, but not being able to update Windows is a problem.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

So my internet has been a bit slow lately, and I've noticed when I load certain pages I get redirected, especially on my phone, but also on my laptops. I suspect there is something wrong in my router itself, but I'm unable to access it. When I use the gateway mask to access it, I just get "Connection timed out." I'm using the right IP, and I double checked it with ipconfig, but I can't access it. I've tried on my phone and laptop, I've tried over the wireless and wired connections, but I can't get in.

I'm trying to avoid having to factory reboot the router, which is why I'm hoping people here might have an idea.

I find it really odd, and troubling, that I can't even access my router.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Cannot connect to router, internet is fine, but redirecting

Hi Mydako, and welcome to TSG.

Say what? I have heard of "Subnet Mask" and "Default Gateway". They are both part of the results of an IPCONFIG /ALL command. What is a Gateway Mask?

What IP address are you using to access the router?
Have you confirmed that the router has a web browser based interface?
What is the Brand, Model Number, and any hardware and/or firmware version of your router?

The problem: About a week a go my computer stopped connecting to all online games for apparently no reason (Wow, Steam, Sword of the New World). My internet works just fine, I can browse the web, stream video's, everything seems normal. But for any game it wont connect to the servers, the update servers, the news servers, nothing.

I have disabled my windows firewall, disabled my modem firewall, forwarded every port I could think of, checked all my internet settings about 20 times, checked for viruses, closed all unused programs... nothing.

My setup: I am running windows XP professional with sp3 installed. The wireless modem I am using is an SMC8014WG-SI cable modem. I am using a static IP address.

I have a friend’s win xp computer that they desperately need for a expensive
program on it that only runs in win xp.
I started out in the win xp forum because I thought it was a problem with the
winsock in the network part of win xp. Through doing some problem solving
with help there, it is now narrowed down to something software is stopping the computer from
connecting to the internet
The lan adapter and wifi work fine they connect to the network but they do not
go out to the internet
I don’t have a proxy running
I did do a reset of the winsock ..no luck
if I do a ping it wont get out to the server and fails
I cant use any browser I tried 3 and none work. I get page not displayed
Through some help here we discovered in safe mode I can connect to the
internet. but At this point we are stuck I am not sure if anyone here in the
malware forum can help but I am really hoping to get this computer connecting
again without reinstalling windows xp.
Thank you in advance for your help

A:Computer connecting to network fine but will not connect to internet

Well if you can connect in safe mode but not normally then that sould point to some software or driver conflict.
VPN installed of third party firewall? What about AV that might have a firewall. You can post a FRST log that may provide some clues:

Problem arose yesterday. I've ran diagnostics and turned the router on and off, plugged the Ethernet in for a better connection. My hp envy 17 laptop finds no problems with the connection yet I cannot access any pages through the web browsers properly. I've restarted my laptop several times and sometimes a page will load but never load completely and if I click a link on the page it will not load at all. My Skype works fine and I've ran a full scan with panda security which has detected no problems. I haven't downloaded anything in the space of when my laptop was working fine and when it stopped working, in fact I barely used it at all. I've tried all the conmand prompts I've seen suggested in previous cases like this i.e. The netsh winsock etc. sort of stuff but they haven't seemed to work. I believe I don't have any proxy servers active on my laptop or in any of the browsers (not sure if that makes sense since I'm not really an expert on this technical stuff ) also chrome keeps crashing every time I load a page, which has happened to me previously so may be a separate problem, but it isn't really helping the matter. Really hoping I don't have some sort of malware.. Any suggestions of solutions would be great, the laptop is fairly new, bought it in September I believe so I don't see why there should be any problems with it (considering its price too >.>) thanks a lot. Also my laptop has windows 8.1 if that... Read more

ive been using the same setup for months, my laptop connects to our wireless network, its been perfect, our ipads connect to it too, theres never been a problem, then last night out of the blue it just stopped working, all the devices and my laptop can still connect to the network just fine and they can browse the net and ask questions on forums (), but they cant connect to game servers, my daughter cant play godus on her ipad, my son cant connect to minecraft, i cant connect to world of warcraft.

I did have a message pop up briefly on my laptop that there was an IP conflict and i thought that might have been something to do with it, i tried everything i could to get a new IP address, i did the ipconfig /release /renew thing, i tried leaving the modem and router cables out all night so i'd get a new one from my ISP but none of these actually worked, after checking i can see that i still have the same IP address.

But it still didnt make sense to me because its not only my laptop that cant connect to games, the other laptop and the ipads are also having the same problem. I googled for hours, trying various things, the main one i kept seeing was port forwarding, even though i had never needed to do that before i figured i'd give it a go and tried to open up wow's ports first. I found the list of ports to open on blizzards website and went to work opening them all up, but i am still unable to connect to battlenet/WoW

I also tried resetting my router back to factory se... Read more

I'm virus cleaning a computer for a friend. They are unable to connect to the internet through IE and the laptop is infected with viruses. I started a basic cleaning, (Found and destroyed the trojan, used a few cleaner programs to clean it out, attempted to run malwarebytes and spybot.) I was able to run malwarebytes (without it being updated) and it found 235 viruses. But there are still viruses preventing it from updating and preventing me from accessing the internet with IE. The internet is working because I installed firefox and the internet works fine. But i still cant access the internet through IE. I've tried updating malwarebytes in safe mode, no luck. I tried installing spybot in safe mode, no luck. I cant update malwarebytes or install spybot. I'm going to research how to get malwarebytes to update but does anyone know a registry fix or what i have to do to solve the IE not accessing the internet problem?? I'm hoping all i have to do is get malwarebytes updated and spybot installed and updated and they will find and destroy whatever virus is preventing IE to access internet. But how do i go about that???

Check the installed extensions in Chrome's settings and remove any you find.  If you still cannot go online, check the firewall.

A few days ago my desktop booted up very slowly and I was not able to connect to any webpages or any programs which use the internet. I just left it to sit for a few days and tried to boot it up again today, it still booted rediculously slow (took about 10 minutes) but it's still not working so I figured I'd register here and ask for some help. The router which I have connected to my desktop's modem is used to give internet to my laptop is still working fine (I'm posting this from my laptop). I've tried to do a system restore on my desktop, but the restores get an error and don't work. Also when i do the system restores, my desktop icons wont load so i have to end the explorer.exe process and then run the process again, after which all the icons show. (this only happens after I system restore). Another thing that is weird is that I can still connect to AIM (the instant messanger) on my desktop, but nothing else. Not sure what to do at this point, hopefully you guys can help.
