Solved: Cryptographic Service will not start

Q: Solved: Cryptographic Service will not start

Hello, I am currently running xp SP3 and am unable to install several security updates. I have narrowed the issue down to the Cryptographic Service not starting. When I go into Services and try to start it it gives me an error of, "Could not start the Cryptographic services on local computer. Error 1075: the dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion." I have spent several hours trying different fixes including all of the ones listed here:

The only fix I was unable to try on the above website was changing the group policy as I was unable to find the group policy under the ADD list.

I have also ran a sfc /scannow which came up perfectly clean.

At this point I Have completly run out of ideas, any help would be grealy appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Solved: Cryptographic Service will not start

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

One of our computer having a problem, a Pentium 4 with a Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2.

It has many issues, the source of which seems to be that the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service doesn't start.

As a consequence Windows Update, System Information, System Restore, User & Accounts control panel, printers, Windows Firewall, ActiveX, and many other things all don't work.

I can't install anything. And when I go into Device Manager, Services, or other things like that, I can't view the properties of any items.

Almost all services don't work, maybe they depend on Remote Procedure Call too?

If I go into Services (only Standard view works), I can see that Remote Procedure Call is set as "Automatic" startup type, but is not "Started" at all.

Any attempt to start it manually results in the error "Could not start the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is Denied".

I checked the properties for Cryptograpich Service under the Administrative tools->Services and Crypt won't start. When I click start, I get this small window:

"Could not start the Cryptomatic Service on Local computer.
Error 1290: 0x05a"

This is the message I get when I try to update Windows:
"setup could not verify the integrity of update.inf; cannot install updates"

I checked the: C:\windows\softwaredistribution\download\2fb654de6ecfe5a35a556d5a5c387a87\update folder and I don't have an update.inf in that folder. (I have attached a screenshot of the contents of that folder)

I dont have a Windows XP recovery disc which came with the computer, though I have the C:/i1386 which contains the same Image as the Disc. I've tried all of the steps from the windows support site.

I had a Backdoor trojan which "mas_pogi" has been doing very well of helping me with. I'v deleted much of the trojan and its remnance, but for us to finish the repair of my computer, I must get the latest updates from windows. Seems like files in my computer have been deleted in order to prevent any updates on my computer. Any help would be great. Thanks.

...you'll have a problem with all programs that need UAC elevation

Firstly, immediately after booting with absolutely no errors, UAC classifies virtually every program that needs elevated rights in order to run as from Unknown Publisher, and pops up the famous 'Allow/Cancel an unidentified program wants access to your computer'. (after clicking on allow, though, the intended-to-run program runs just fine)

Then, after a while, UAC doesn't start at all and all that shows (for the same class of programs) is the 'The service cannot accept control messages at this time' error message

You may wonder why I posted this thread :) well...
..at first I wrote it as a problem for which I hoped to get help here, and then decided to post anyway because some of the vista users who want to slim down the services load may encounter this "self-solving" "problem" ;)

It sounds like the crypto service is not running, follow these steps to enable it.

We are in the process of developing a Cryptographic Service Provider (CSP) and a Key Storage Provider (KSP) which are implemented as Dynamic-link libraries (.dll). The final product needs to be digitally signed in order for Windows to accept and use our implementations.

I read on MSDN that developers used to send an email to [email protected] and request that Microsoft do the signing. I sent an email to them, requesting more information about the process, but haven't received any feedback in about three months.

I figured an alternative would be to buy a "Code Signing certificate for Microsoft Authenticode" from a trusted CA, such as Symantec, and use that to sign the appropriate files ourselves. Would this be possible? I am just not sure whether it is permitted that security products, such as CSPs and KSPs, can be signed by the developers themselves and whether Microsoft wants to look at the implementations first.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

A:How to digitally sign a Cryptographic Service Provider (CSP)

A search seems to indicate that email address is still correct. There is also indications you must download a Cryptographic Provider Development Kit

I am running Windows XP SP2 on an older Toshiba satellite laptop, and have run into a problem when installing the printer software for a new HP printer. A:Trying to start Cryptographic Services

What do you get if you type this into a command prompt (CMD.EXE)?

The error message means that the user account which the crypto service is using to log on is not the same as the rest of the services which normally share its SVCHOST "container".

NetworkService, which is what I assume you're referring to, is actually a (hidden) user account, and that's what CryptoSvc should be using to log on by default. If the output of the command above suggests that CryptoSvc is attempting to use something else - that's the problem.

I had a problem with MySQL, I couldn't find much help, so I though I'd share the problem/solution for any other noob out there.

A while ago I installed MySQL on my Win2k machine (had SP3 at the time). Everything worked well until I upgraded to W2k SP4. I wasn't able to get the MySQL service to start, and trying to connect to the server gave this message:

Error 2003: Unable to connect to MySQL server.

I saw the following message in the event viewer:

The MySql service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 9 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 0 milliseconds: No action.

I checked out the mysql error log located in c:/mysql/data/windows.err and found this message:

030813 13:42:06 InnoDB: Started
030813 13:42:06 Fatal error: Can't open privilege tables: Table 'mysql.host' doesn't exist
030813 13:42:06 Aborting

I wasn't able to find a mysql.host file hanging out anywhere on my computer, so I did a fresh reinstall... Everything is fine now.

I was wondering if there is anything else I could have done instead of reinstalling?

Hi All,
I'm having a problem with my wireless networking on XP whereby no wireless networks can be found. Basically it says "one or more wireless networks are in range", but when i click the bubble it shows no networks at all, even when i refresh. Normally it shows my home network (access point about 15 metres away) along with around 3-5 other networks from various neighbours. The issue is on the desktop PC not the access point as the laptop i'm typing this from is connecting fine.

After spending many hours trying everything I can find on forums related to this issue and ruling out solutions one by one, i've narrowed it down to a probable specific issue with something called the "event Log Service". From browsing forums I think fixing this issue will fix my problem - either way it's definately giving an error message that sounds not nice.

Under Computer Management - Services. The Event Log is set to Automatic, but is not running. I try to start it, it gives the following error:
"Could not start the Event Log Service on Local Computer. Error 126: The specified module cannot be found". A similar error occurs with something called "Task Scheduler" in the same place - except this time the second part is "Error 1717: The interface is unknown".

Does anyone have any ideas re how to reinstall these components or otherwise fix this computer? I do not want to have to reinstall windows etc. As I mentioned tried... Read more

First, I want to mention that this isn't a network problem like absolutely everyone else online. I get this error when trying to run most applications on my computer. Some get it when I run in administrator mode as well, such as the CMD. It doesn't happen right away, but when my PC is up for a undetermined amount of time, it triggers, and the following problems occur:

- Start menu may or may not respond to my actions (When the start menu is open)

- Adobe Plug-in crashes on Youtube after a 30-second wait.

- If I wait long enough explorer.exe will crash and I will be stuck using Alt-Tab and Task Manager.

I've run malware scans with Spybot, Anti-Malware Malware Bytes, and SUPERAntiSpyware free edition, so I am at a loss. If you guys know whats up or what I should do, then please reply. :)

A:[SOLVED] The dependency group or service failed to start

Hi, usually a permissions problem in the registry reads "local service not "NT authority/service" as far as we can determine the SID is changed from "current" this is difficult to sort. Firstly you need all updates installed. It has been possible in some instances to fix this by changing to a new user account OR by running a very complicated repair of permissions.

Now you might find this workaround will do it for you so try this first:-

Go to start ,all programs, accessories and right click on command prompt select "run as administrator" at the prompt:-

net localgroup Administrators /add networkservice
press enter then type:
net localgroup Administrators /add localservice
press enter then type:
press enter and restart your computer
It is also some times necessary to "add the user" so

net localgroup administrators <my_user> /add

Note:- My user is Paul so the command is:-

net localgroup administrators Paul /add press enter.

Do not worry if it returns the user is already a member of this group.
Let us know how you get on.

I read how someone else on this forum, Garcia I believe, had a similar, but not the same error. I hoped his solution would work for me but it didn't. I too have recently added a D-Link Rangebooster G Desktop Adapter to my computer after which I was sailing along happily until the following day Service Pack 3 was downloaded and I received this message "Air Plus CFG-exe-EntryPoint Not Found" "The procedure entrypoint apsApply could not be located in the dynamic link library wlanapi.dl." WZCSLDR2.exe-Ent.

So far I have removed D-link and its Anio Service program and reapplied with no luck. Then I removed service Pack 3 and reapplied the D-Link Rangebooster. No luck. Just for good measure I tried it one more time. When Service Pack 3 is removed and the D-Link Rangebooster is reapplied the message disappears. I'd take off and ignore Service Pack 3 downloads except I did read your stickys about sneaky patches that have been downloaded without permission by Microsoft. Have you any suggestions? Thank you for your help. Susan

A:[SOLVED] start-up error message after service pack 3

So while I was waiting for an answer I read some of the other posted problems.. and picked up the idea to go to D-links website for an updated driver... imagine my embarrassment..it worked. The error message is gone! Put it down to being a newbie. Take care. Susan

Everytime I reboot my laptop, I have to start the DHCP client service in order to obtain an IP address for my wireless. Any idea? The service is set to automatic.

A:[SOLVED] DHCP Client service does not start automatically

Double-click your DHCP Service and click on the Dependencies Tab, make sure the other Services you see on the Dependencies list are starting Automatically.

Some of your DHCP Dependencies will be Drivers so go to Device Manger, in the View menu, click Show hidden devices. Now, double-click Non-Plug and Play drivers section. Double-click all driver entries you found in the Dependency list of DHCP one-by-one to open its properties dialog, and click the Driver tab;
Check if the Startup type is System.

Then check if it now starts Automatically, if not then try and get a hold of another PC and check it's DHCP Dependency against yours incase any are missing.

If none of that works try doing a repair install.

Wireless Zone Configuration Service IS set to Automatic but when windows startsup, the service is 'stopped'. I have to manually start it every time I reboot my computer.

How can I make it start automatically?

A:Solved: Wireless Zone Service Stopped at start up

It turned out that Dell Wifi Utility disables the WZC service. I turned it off and it fixed the problem.

I had a couple viruses, removed them with a few different software applications. But not before my wireless internet connection had stopped. See the sequence in the attachment for the messages I'm getting.

Windows says "identifying the problem", then "the Windows Wireless Service is not running on this computer", then when I click "Start Windows Wireless Service" it says "Windows cannot resolve the problem".

I've tried starting the service (Wlan Autoconfig), but i get "error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start".

I've seen the question asked before in other forums, but with no answer. The OP ended up doing a format/reinstall, which I'd rather not do.

Wired connection still works. I've tried two different wireless adapters, both with new and old drivers-- no good.

Hi, I am setting up two HP DL380G6 servers with an MSA 2012i (with two controllers), and the server-1 is displaying a start up message that says "iSCSI Discovery Service encountered a problem and needed to close", I tried to gather information about the log event and all I found was:
" - Event ID 1
- Initiator failed to connect to the target. Target IP address and TCP Port number are given in dump data.
o This event is logged when the initiator could not make a TCP connection to the given target portal. The dump data in this event will contain the Target IP address and TCP port to which initiator could not make a TCP connection."

I ping both iSCSI targets from my host and both reply, so I don't understand why this happens or how can I fix this, does anybody have an idea that can help me?

NOTE: Please see attached screen capture.

thanks in advance to all =)

A few days ago I began to receive the above noted error message. The system locked up, more or less, until this message would appear after about 15 minutes.

I have a Dell XPS M1530 with Windows Vista Business, SP2. I do not use bluetooth connectivity between my laptop and external devices.

To resolve this error, I did the following:

Start --> Programs --> Dell Quickset --> Radio Control Options
Click "Advanced Settings" button
Click "Radio Control Options" Tab
Unselect "Bluetooth"
OK --> OK
Click Bluetooth Taskbar Icon --> Disable Bluetooth Devices
I hope this helps because I could not find anything on the Internet with this solution. Hours on the phone with Dell proved, unsurprisingly, to be a waste of time.

For the sake of completeness, I'm going to give the full history here. We have a computer running Windows Vista Home Premium. This is on a home network; no domain. The other morning, following a Windows Update and restart, when the user tried to login she received the message "User Profile Service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded".

We followed online advice to log in with an administrator account and change setting in the registry for the Profile, resetting some values to 0. We also followed instructions to delete the ntuser.dat file; however, we could not locate a file that was just ntuser.dat; they also had long series of numbers after them, apparently indicating that they are temporary files.

After several tries at fixing this, she now gets a different error when she tries to log on: "group policy client service failed to start".

She can log onto the account in Safe mode, and I can log on to her computer using her account from my computer on the same home network without any problems.

We have tried copying the user directory to a new profile, except for the ntuser.dat files, as suggested on Windows help. This took a good 5-6 hours to copy, and the new profile seems to be severely hosed; none of her setting have been carried over, webshots will not run, Firefox keeps asking if she wants to set it as the default browser even after she tells it yes each time, and she can't access the User Accounts settings from the new ... A:Solved: Group policy client service failed to start error - please help!

I think we've got this resolved. Unfortunately, there have been so many steps that I'm not sure which were neccessary. These includes:
* The instructions here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...gon-user/4ed66b21-c23e-42f1-98b2-706dcf931fae
(changing some registry entries for the profile)
* Uninstalling Symantec, which had an automatic scan that had been interrupted and was stuck not being able to complete or be cancelled.
* The final bit of fix that worked was (hope I'm getting this all right):
1) Clearing the registry entries as above.
2) Renaming the profile folder.
3) Restarting the computer and letting it create a new profile folder with the same name.
4) Copying the ntuser files from the newly created profile to the old profile.
5) Deleting the new profile and renaming the old profile back.
And now things seem to be working, though she had to run setup on some programs again.

I am attempting to the load the software for a Canon Mx850 printer to my Lenovo PC with Windows Vista.

I get the message Print Spooler Service has been stopped. I have checked in the services area and it is set to automatic. When I attempt to start it. I get the following Error: 1068 dependency service or group failed to start.

I have gone to the command prompt and typed the following: sc config spooler depend= RPCSS however I get message access denied. I am set as the system administrator. Not sure what to do at this point. Very frustrating. Printer works fine when connected to laptop. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

A:Print Spooler Service stopped Error 1068 dependency service or group failed to start

Double click on the Print Spooler service to open its Properties. On the Dependencies tab see upon what it depends, and trace back to see if the cause/fix can be determined. Caveat: no guarantee this will work any better than your command attempt.
