HP Omen 15: Backlit Keyboard Not Working After BIOS Update

Q: HP Omen 15: Backlit Keyboard Not Working After BIOS Update

This morning my HP Omen arrived in the mail, fully functional with everything in tact. After I left my laptop to install the updates from the HP Support Assistant (One of those updates being a BIOS update), I came back to find my computer restarted and my backlit keyboard not working. After trying to use the HP OMEN Control to fix the keyboard, I found that the keyboard will flash briefly when I click "Apply To All Zones", but then immediately turns off again. Is there any way to fix this Backlit Keyboard issue ir can we see an update in the near future that fixes this issue?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Found a solution! Apparently, the keyboard shuts down after the BIOS update, so in order to turn it back on just push F5.

I've tried downloading the latest bios and resetting the keyboard options in OMEN CONTROL as well as pressing the F5 button but nothing works.  The speaker lights are working fine and can still be customized through CONTROL however the rest of the keyboard won't light up regardless of whatever color or zones I choose through OMEN.  I've read in the forum that other users have had this problem after a bios update and clicking th F5 has worked for some users but it still has not for me.  My laptop just fell out of the one year warranty and it would be disheartening to lose the ability of a backlit keyboard for a $2000 laptop just because of a bios update.  Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

My notebook is around a year old and in good condition - a few days ago the keyboard completely stopped working. I went through a lot of fixes and troubleshooting, and some of the symptoms really don't match what i am seeing online. For starters, the majority of the time it will not accept an external (USB) keyboard. Also, in order to be able to enter my password with a USB keyboard i have to boot the computer whilst holding Shift and Enter. Now the keyboard is being extremely temperemental, it isn't useable. Certain keys will occasionally work but not correctly, for example the 'T' key will operate TAB. So far i have done a full system restore, i have removed the battery and held the power button for around a minute, i have updated the keyboard driver and reinstalled it. I've been trying these things in different orders for the past 2 days and i'm not making any progress. The computer hasn't been in contact with any moisture, it hasn't been dropped.  The next step i am considering is updating the BIOS - i have no knowledge of this and wondered if this was an appropriate thing to do? Thanks for reading!

A:Notebook Keyboard not working - Bios Update?

Rturner9314 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! You don't say what Model laptop you have, but my guess is that it did NOT come with Win10 preinstalled.  Is that right? And if so, did it come with Win7 preinstalled or Win8x? Asking because MS recently pushed out their Anniversary Update and, as evidenced by LOTS of postings on the Win10 community forum, and here, that has been causing serious problems with folks whose Upgraded PCs worked fine with the older versions of Win10 (i.e., 10240, 10587) but not with this new version (14393).We can proceed once you provide the answers. And NO, a BIOS update is NOT going to address this problem; plus, unless you have a very new PC, there is no BIOS update available for it.Thanks

Hi, One thing you could try would be to see if you can roll back to the previous bios version as follows. Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Select the Diagnostic Menu option ( f2 ). Select the Firmware Management option and then select the BIOS Rollback option. Regards, DP-K

After installing an ssd recently, the backlighting on my keyboard no longer works. Every other button on the keyboard works normally, including the other built in function keys like mute, brightness, etc. I might have messed up some connection, but I didn't take the keyboard off at all to install the ssd, which was installed without issue itself. Another thought is that it might be a driver, since its a fresh drive and windows install. I don't really know what to look for though, so any thoughts you might have to help would be appreciated.

I just received my thinkpad P71 yesterday and I'm using it right now. Immediately off the bat, I removed the Hard drive in favor of a far better one. I'm curious to know does the keyboard require any special drivers for the backlit keyboard to work? I assume that it works similiarly to the W541 Backlit keyboard in which I hit Fn + Space Bar, it should work right? Well, currently it is not working. Keep in mind that this is on a Fresh install of Windows, does it need drivers to work? Thanks!

I have recently replaced my laptop's bezel. Since then backlit is not working even though the settings are correct. Could this issue be due to bezel replacement. If yes, please suggest how to resolve it

A:backlit keyboard not working- XPS 15 L502

I assume that removed both the keyboard and palm rest first to remove the LCD assembly and finally the LCD bezel. I would go back and check the keyboard and make sure that both the keyboard data and back lite cables are connected correctly. The manual doesn't show a back lit keyboard, but on back lit keyboards there are two cables that will need to be connected.

Hello..

I have the S50-B-15P model with Windows 10 installed. I never checked if the backlit keyboard worked on Windows 8.1, as soon as I got it I upgraded to Windows 10.

I have installed all the drivers from the Toshiba Windows 10 upgrade page however as before the keyboard works just not backlit!
I opened the eco utility software and checked for the keyboard backlit settings under eco mode however it does not exist and no setting exists in the BIOS either. The keyboard does have the symbol to enable the backlit function on the Z key however pressing FN + Z does nothing.

Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix this? Does the keyboard even have this function or is it faulty?

Thanks, Craig

I have a new Dell XPS 13 Linux edition (this one) and immediately installed Linux Mint 18 on it, wiping the Ubuntu 14.04 which was shipped with the it.
I am really confident with it, only the backlight for the keyboard is not working. I have a keyboard light symbol on my F10 key but when I press it, nothing happens. All other features and all other media controls/media keys/screen brightness keys work. When clicking the battery icon in the Linux Mint taskbar, I see 2 controls, one for the keyboard lights brightness and one for the screen brightness. When I drag those bars, only the screen brightness is working again.
I also see the settings in /sys/class/leds/dell\:\:kbd_backlight/ (I think that's the config folder for it). The brightness file in this directory contains "1", so as I understand this correctly, this should theoretically work.
As I noted before I immediately installed Linux Mint on it, so I can't say whether it worked before. And this is really the only thing which is not working on the laptop.
I have obviously checked that my ultrabook has backlights with the product number on its back.
Do you have some tips so I can get this to work? Thanks in advance!

It's a hardware issue and is going to have to be addressed by making a warranty claim. There is no adjustment or quick setting fix we can provide.

Hi,
I bought a backlit keyboard for my latitude 6420 which was only equiped with a non backlit model at the time I got it.
When hitting Fn + >, nothing happens. I read many things on the web and it looks like we have to go into the BIOS and enable the backlit. I've been told that I should find the menu under System configuration and Keyboard Illumination but I don't have this menu...
I also had a look and the hot keys and don't have the ones related to the backlit keyboard... Looking at the Control Panel, Keyboard Properties, I don't have the Backlight tab, "Keyboard Brightness".Does someone know how I can enable my backlit keyboard and have it detected as such?
Prior buying the backlit keyboard, I got in touch with the Dell support to make sure I can upgrade my notebook with a backlit model without facing compatibility issues. They told me that I just needed to order the backlit model as a spare part and it will work... but it doesn't...
Does somebody know how I can get the backlit keyboard working or is it just a bad luck and it will never work? thanks in advance for your help!

Hi all,  I recently purchased a T460s with some upgrades on the specifications (RAM 16 GB, GPU GeForce 930M and etc.). The initial operating system was set to Windows 7, so I upgraded to Windows 10 64 bit. I manually downloaded all the drivers required for this laptop and windows 10. While everything else runs pretty well, the keyboard backlight does not seem to work. I haven't checked if the backlight works on the previous operating system, so I am unsure if the problem is actually from the hardwares or if the OS was updated wrong. I am pretty sure that this model supports the keyboard backlit function since the space bar has that little image on the left side that (I'm guessing) indicates the function of backlit keyboards.  I'm wondering if there are actual drivers that I must intall prior to pressing the (Fn+Spacebar) keys to turn on the backlight, or if there is a problem with my computer. If it's the case of the latter, I am thinking about resetting my laptop (reinstalling windows 10). Being aware of how long it takes to download and install all the necessary components, once I do, is there any method of backing up the computer and after the reset just using that backup to go back to the original state where I have all my programs and data?  Thanks.

A:Latitude laptop backlit keyboard (not working)

Hi Hildo,
E-series Latitude portable systems have the option of a backlit keyboard. With the E3 series keyboard, there are several ways to set the backlit keyboard illumination. One can either press <FN> + <Right Arrow> to adjust the illumination. The other way is to adjust the illumination through Dell Control Point (DCP). From the main DCP screen, choose ‘Keyboard Backlight’. The settings you can adjust are as follows:

Brightness:-

0%(Off)
25%
50%
75%
100%

Activation Settings:-

Keyboard light will automatically time out if there is no activity for certain time frame where the setting can be preset from 5 seconds up to 5 minutes.
Resume lighting from time out with default option as 'Keyboard'. This means whenever user presses any key on the keyboard, the keyboard backlight will light up provided the brightness is not set to 0%(Off). The other option available is 'All internal input devices'. If this option is chosen, other internal input devices like the touchpad, will also turn on the keyboard backlight on one touch.

You can also install Dell control point for your computer from link: http://dell.to/XDJhTF
Steps to download:-

Click on “Download Now”.
Save the driver on your desktop.
Once the driver is downloaded on the desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.

A:X1 Carbon Touch Backlit keyboard not working

Hi, architect7

Be sure to hold the Fn key while pressing the Spacebar to turn on the backlit keyboard. If you have already tried this to no avail, then I would recommend checking some BIOS settings. To enter BIOS, reboot the machine. When it is powering back up and you see the Lenovo splash screen, tap the Enter key repeatedly. A menu should appear. When it does, press F1 to enter BIOS. Once here, navigate to Config ? Keyboard/Mouse and check the settings of Fn and Ctrl Key swap and Fn Key Lock. For purposes of this test, make sure they are both set to Disabled. Once done, press F10 to save and exit. The machine should now boot normally. Log in to Windows and try to activate the backlight again and see if that works.

Best of luck,
Adam

I just got a T470. Excellent computer! I got the Core i7-7600U model with 4gb of memory and a 500gb non-SSD hard disk (T470 20HDCTO1WW, ordered directly from Lenovo). The 2TB SSD and 32GB RAM I got from Crucial work without problem (yes, I ran a memory tester) ? although, yes, it?s a moderate pain to take off the back panel (even if you have a special plastic tool for doing so). It?s a really great laptop; I like how clear and bright the display is as well as how fast it runs. That said, on to my question: I got the model with the non-backlit keyboard. Is is possible to upgrade this model to have a backlit keyboard? Here is the information I have gotten from my research: * The dealers selling T470 backlit keyboards warn that it may not be possible to get the backlight to work if the motherboard does not support it (for example, https://www.amazon.com/ThinkPad-01AX569-SN20L72890-Backlit-Keyboard/dp/B0727S1H14/ where they claim ?Please check whether your laptop can support backlit keyboard or not before placing the order, if can not, the backlit function of our keyboard will not work!? or https://www.amazon.com/CHNASAWE-Replacement-Backlit-Keyboard-Thinkpad/dp/B071KWWW21/ with a similar ?If your original/old keyboard does not have the backlit, this keyboard backlit will not work.? warning) * There is nothing in Lenovo?s T470 service manual at https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/pubs/t470/html_en/index_en.html#Replacing_t... I recently purchased a T460 to realize that it did not have a backlit keyboard on arrival, I see aftermarket ones online for reasonable prices so I'm curious as to whether or not there is some output on the motherboard I am missing or if it would be just like installing a regular one.  I have seen on forums that people have done it but I am asking specifically for the T460.

A:Can I replace a T460 non-backlit keyboard to a backlit one?

No problem.  Backlight keyboard is just swapped in - no other parts.

OK here is the Service Manual: Manual The keyboards are not sold by HP as a separate part: only sold with the whole top cover. See p. 20 The Manual does not list any keyboard/top cover as having a backlight. However, the keyboard map on p. 15 shows the f5 action key as activating a backlight on "select models".  From this I gather that there is a place on the motherboard to connect a backlight cable if the keyboard has one. However, extracting the old keyboard from the top cover and replacing it with just the replacement keyboard is not easy and there are no directions in the Manual for that procedure. I would want to see one of these alleged backlit keyboards. Bottom line, it is possible, but I would be leery. Do you have an f5 action key with the backlight symbol on it? Have you tried it to see if maybe your keyboard is backlit? If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

To use a backlit kbd the motherboard must have the connector to plug it into- usually only highend models have this. Your Maintenance & Service Guide does not show a backlit kbd option.http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04886216

If your computer is a "desktop" computer, it should be a "no-brainer".The USB port on your computer would supply power to the keyboard to run the back-lights. But, since you have a notebook, you'll have to find a keyboard that physically matches the size of your current keyboard, and then hope that the notebook's motherboard will supply electrical power to the back-lights.This sounds like a tough task!  From:  http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetPDF.aspx/c04472797.pdf >>  Full-sized spill-resistant keyboard; optional back-lit keyboard keeps you productive in low-light settings lists that such an option is available, or maybe, was available when this model was first manufactured. From: http://h20628.www2.hp.com/km-ext/kmcsdirect/emr_na-c04551620-2.pdf Keyboard with backlight and pointing sick for use only on HP EliteBook 850 G2 Notebook PC and HP EliteBook 750 G2 Notebook PC computer models (includes backlight, keyboard, and pointing stick cables):       For use in Canada776475-DB1
