Corrupt MP scheduled scan Windows Defender

Q: Corrupt MP scheduled scan Windows Defender

On opening the Task Scheduler I get a message " Task MP scheduled Scan. Task image is corrupt or has been tampered with ". I look in Library, Microsoft, Windows Defender and the Task MP Scheduler is not there. Real time protection appears to be working and I can do a manual scan through the control panel. Can I download a replacement Windows Defender file or can I fix what I have now without using Refresh or Recovery.

As an afterthought, is it possible to recreate the task in the library and please provide a snapshot of what it may look like

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Normally, Windows Defender reports to have scanned approx. 550,000 objects when completing a full system scan. Then suddenly, I see full system scans being completed of over 1,200,000 objects or just more than double. What could account for such a large increase in scan size on my system practically overnight?

A:Windows Defender Scheduled Scan

Defender defaults to quick scan- full scanning is the entire computer. settings can be changed in tools>options

Did you by chance install CCleaner? If so, you need to uncheck Windows Defender & MS Antimalware under the Applications tab. It cleans the logs out & makes Defender think it hasn't run a scan in a while.

I have Win7 with MSE installed and my daughter has just got a new laptop with Win8 and Windows Defender installed.

The two protection systems look very similar except for the fact that there is no option of a scheduled scan on Windows Defender (at least I can't see one). The scheduled scan checks for updates and then scans the system daily or weekly which seems like a sensible idea to me.

It looks as though the only way to do a scan on Win8 is to do it manually - not a good idea, I would have thought, as it's easy to forget.

Am I missing something here? Is there a way to schedule scans?

A:Will Windows Defender Do A Scheduled Scan?

Hi, from here
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-performance/windows-defender-windows-8-schedule-option-missing/b6603c6a-cba9-4ba7-a894-37f895fc6c92

As I understand, you are facing issues with scheduling of Windows Defender.
You may follow the steps to open Task Scheduler:
a.     Press Windows key + W on the keyboard to bring up Search interface.
b.    Type “Schedule tasks” without quotes and select it from the list on the left hand side.
c.     It will open up the Task Scheduler window.

It would pay to read the entire page

On my Win 7 laptop, I have Windows Defender set to run a scheduled quick scan at 11 pm in the evening on a daily schedule. This scan never runs (even when the laptop is in use - the system idle option is not checked). When this scheduled scan is set up in Defender, is a Windows Task Scheduler task supposed to be created?

The Window Defender entry in Task Scheduler (under Microsoft not Microsoft / Windows in the Task Scheduler Library tree) does not have any tasks listed in the middle pane.

Defender is operating as expected otherwise - it performs both Quick and Full Scans manually.

A:Windows Defender Scheduled Scan does not run

Your system spec info lists Window Defender as your antivirus.
Window Defender is not an antivirus app in Windows 7.

As for your scheduled task issue, do you have history turned on? Maybe some info in there will help you figure out why it the task is not running. What happens if you manually ask the task to run?

To do a complete full system virus scan (not Quick Scan) takes many minutes. I have mine on a schedule in Windows Defender. When I look at the History log it indicates the time to complete the task is about one minute. Can someone explain the log?s entry? Why is the time to complete so short?
A screenshot link of the History log is below.

Hey all.

I was running a full scan on my Win8 system using Defender.  After 15 minutes, scan was three-quarters completed with no problems, so  I left the computer for five minutes.  When I returned, Defender had switched over to a Quick Scan in order to finish up.

No threats found, either by Defender or by MBam, which I ran afterwards.  But is it unusual for Defender to switch from Full to Quick scan mid-operations?

A:Windows Defender Full Scan Switches Over To Quick Scan

I never heard of that happening before so I'm not sure how it occurred. There are three types of scans offered by Windows 8/10 Defender and most other anti-virus/anti-malware programs:Quick Scan only checks the areas of your computer most likely to contain malware...the most prevalent and common places where malware typically hides. The length of time for performing a Quick scan will vary but it generally takes about 15-30 minutes so they can be performed daily.Full Scan is much more comprehensive since it scans the entire hard drive (all folders/files) which can number in the thousands. The length of time for performing a Full scan will also vary but because it is so comprehensive, this type of scan can take several hours. Most Full Scans can be scheduled to run late at night when not using the computer so you can perform a weekly scan without having to monitor it.Custom Scan allows the user to select any files and folders on the hard drive to be scanned. In most cases when performing routine security checks, only a Quick Scan is needed since it checks the areas of your computer most likely to contain malware...the most prevalent and common places where malware typically hides. A Full scan is generally recommended only for heavily infected systems.

It can't run if the comp is asleep. I can't check right now, but is there a task created in task scheduler for this? If so, you can right click on the task and select propeties and on the conditions tab, select wake the computer to run this task.

Defender scans are automatic. It will scan downloaded files as soon as they are saved to the computer and run quick scans periodically.

If you want Defender to scan the entire drive, you will have to ask it too manually.

Today my windows defender randomly popped up that it was turned off. This was weird so I went ahead and enabled it then tried to run a quick scan. Every time I run a quick scan it pops up an error and goes red again. At first it would keep disabling after enabling it after a few seconds but after a restart that no longer happens it stays enabled but if I try to scan it will again disable itself.
I've run quick and full Malwarebytes scan's and nothing comes up so I really don't know what the issue is. I haven't downloaded anything questionable either. The only thing that happened was yesterday in DayZ some hacker formed me to kill myself but I doubt some hacker in DayZ somehow infected my PC.
EDIT Just found out that also when I run a quick scan in malwarebytes windows defender goes red again. Says real-time protection is off and says data base is out of date when it goes red.

I get this message every time I start the computer.
Running Windows Vista Home Premium, can't find a version #

When this message began appearing I lost the Auto Complete function on IE but not on Firefox. I don't know if the there is a relationship or not. Auto Complete is selected.

I have run chkdsk without success in repairing the error.
I tried a system restore and get a message that says I can't run restore because of the corrupt file. It asks if I want to repair the corrupt file at the next restart. I selected this option and restarted but nothing changed. I repeated three times but nothing changed. Using System Restore was an attempt to recover Auto Complete.

I tried to open the list of start menu programs but instead of showing what is on the start menu I get a window with the same error message and can't go any farther.

Everything except Auto Complete appears to operate normally and I don't know how critical this particular corrupt file problem is.
I do know that I really miss Auto Complete.

Hello JJG,

Whenever you download a file from within the IE download manager, a security scan is performed on it using the SmartScreen filter.

Any file that is opened in Windows 8 will also be scanned by Windows Defender and filtered by Windows SmartScreen by default.

If one has a 3rd party AV program install, then it may also scan emails and downloaded files.

For some odd reason WD keeps telling me I need to do a scan (it's in orange in WD) even though I do a scan everyday via the Task Scheduler. After any kind of scan it resets itself (I don't need to scan, green in color). Some time period later it tells me a scan is needed.

Is there some option that controls how often WD tells you to do a scan? Any ideas on this will be appreciated.

This started happening about a week or so ago. I don't have anything running on my system that IMO is doing this.

How exactly do you do that? Have you created your own task? If so, export and attach the XML.

WD scans during periods of system inactivity. It's implemented as a part of automatic maintenance (search tutorials here). Unless your PC runs 24x7 without entering the inactivity state, scans are taken care of and there's no need to schedule your own scans, given you didn't mess with automatic maintenance in task scheduler.

I have tried System Restore, but that didnt work - aparantely because you cannot use System Restore with Acer - Acer said I could set it back to factory settings but I dont want to go to all that trouble.

I've been using a clean install of W8 Pro for a couple of weeks now and while I have installed some of my usual programs I have not yet installed any standalone AV, firewall, or other "Security" programs. Late last night I decided to try a full scan for the first time, left it running and went to bed. The scanned "file count" was increasing rapidly as one might expect and while the green "progress bar" was filling it was happening quite slowly (I didn't watch long enough to see if there ever was any indicator showing "% completed" or "% remaining "...)

This morning there was absolutely NOTHING on the screen, no messages, no alerts, no "results" or "problems found" or even any indication that the scan itself ever completed...? (I still pretty much use the "desktop" with the bottom taskbar for now and haven't done much playing with Metro Tiles yet ). When I open Defender I cannot find any "scan history" records either...I understand that Windows strives to maintain itself "automatically" for the majority of users that never care to even know what really goes on behind the scenes, but I relish getting into the cybernetic "nuts and bolts" of it and ? if not having way more control of things, at least knowing what's going on (or "what happened")

Surely there must be a way to make it all more transparent..?

However, you can view Windows Defender "Operational" events in Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) under Applications and Services Logs -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Windows Defender.

Going back to Windows 8 I have created a task to manually update Windows Defender definitions on a schedule. This is fairly straightforward as detailed here Auto update Windows Defender and here http://www.thewindowsclub.com/update...dates-disabled.

Today I noticed the computer that has updated to AU is not completing the task. I get "The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)".

The created task and the included argument is the same on all my computers. ""?C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe? -SignatureUpdate"".

My other computers, which do not have AU, complete the task without error. I am fairly certain the one with AU also completed it prior to the update. AFAICT the file location is named correct and is the same after the AU so why can it not find the file specified?

It appears Defender is updating definitions on its own (not frequent enough which is why I schedule the definition updates) and I can update them manually through the program so the function is working.

I know this has been discussed before, but posts tend to be old and a definitive answer has eluded me.

Despite extensive fiddling, I simply cannot get the otherwise excellent Microsoft Security Essentials to run a scheduled scan. I've tried changing the date and time, scanning daily, scanning weekly, making sure the computer is on at the relevant time, and set Task Controller to wake the computer when a scan is due (it being left on standby for most of the day).

It's not a fatal problem because I get regular warnings that a scan has not been run for some time (sometimes even the day after the previous one!), and "Scan now" only takes a couple of minutes unnoticed.

Any more ideas would be welcome.

can do it on another laptop without any problems. I have now had to start doing a Custom Scan as the full scan is just so slow that there must an issue with the full scan. Can I fix it or do I just have to carry on doing a Custom Scan only?

A:Can't do a Windows Defender full scan on one laptop but

Depending on the files it is scanning or if another process is running at the same time it may take a while. Let it do its thing.

Hi!
So I got a message from Windows Defender yesterday, saying that there are possible threats on my PC. I did a complete scan and the threats were removed afterwards. Now, I let my brother know about this, since I was wondering about how some of these threats got on here (I had a Trojan, a Trojandownloader and a Hackertool). He said he didn't know, but that he was not surprised (my stephbrother messes around a lot on this thing ). He then asked to send him a screenshot of the scan results, but I can't find them anywhere! How can I bring those back? Where can I find them please?
Thank you for helping me out!

Hi,
In Windows 7 I used to be able to right click on a file and one of my choices was to scan with Microsoft security essentials, but that's no longer in my right click menu.

How do I go about doing a manual scan on just one file using Microsoft's (I guess it's now Defender) Security Essentials in Windows 8?

Thanks,

I don't think they have built in.

MS themselves describe it as basic security - and that 3rd party apps. are much more complete .

It is only intended for people who otherwise wouldn't have anything at all.

Ok, this isn?t for my computer, it is for my roommates.

About a week ago, we rand Spybot S&D, Norton, and Adaware on his computer and it found a few nasties. He found few Trojan's and a Data miner.

Not all the nasties I think were taken care of. Before the scan windows Defender was corrupt and would not load, and what little loading it did it gave an error and the computer froze.

Just recently, his credit card has had fraudulent charges from few stores in Costa Rica. My instant thought was the data Miner, and I was wondering if you guys can look over his HijackThis! log and see what else is lurking around...

I have posted his HijackThis log below

Thanks,
Greg

I installed MSE last week and I really like it, but I am having a problem with it. I cant get it to run a scheduled scan. I keep moving the time back to try and get it to work but it wont. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I have the check box unchecked that says to only run a scan when the computer is not in use. Anybody know why its not working? Thanks

A:MSE Scheduled Scan Problem

Hello,

Please make sure that you have updated your MSE to the latest virus definitions. If not updated, some of the features may be disabled until you update

I installed MSE about 5 weeks ago. I manually ran a full scan (which takes quite awhile) and then I went to 'Settings Tab' and did the following:
-Run a scheduled scan on my computer..CHECKED
and my personal choice was for Moday around 2 AM
-Check for the latest virus and spyware before running scan...CHECK
-Start the scheduled scan only when my computer is on but not in use I have tried both checked and unchecked and MSE has not scanned my pc as scheduled, ever.
-Limit CPU usage during scan to, I have it set to 10% (I don't know if that means my computer would be really really slow or if it would be almost unnoticeable..again I am so not a computer person as far as the security stuff goes, I can find my way around the web pretty good though..Please help?! What do I have to do to get MSE to run the scan as scheduled? Oh by the way, like I said I tried 2 different settings..MSE has never run a scan unless I have done it manually. Thanks in advance, Janell[/FONT]

A:Need help with setting my MSE to run a scheduled scan

Here are my settings:

Checked: run a scheduled scan on my PC and limit CPU usage during scan to (I have this set to 80).

I have my schedule set to quick scan, Wednesday, 3 pm.

Unchecked: check for the latest virus....... and start the scheduled scan only.......

I have had issues with scans not running myself, but not in at least 6 or 8 months.

Do you use any sort of "cleaning" application that might possibly be removing log data? This log data is needed by MSE so it knows when it last scanned.

Have you tried a complete uninstall and reinstall of MSE?

My scan definitions are updated at least once a day anyway, so I have never bothered with that choice "check for the latest virus and spyware...........".

I certainly don't see why the typical user would want to check "start the scheduled scan only......".

Regarding the "limit CPU usage..." choice. I take that wording to mean that an 80% setting would allot a maximum of 80% to the scan and leave me 20% for other purposes. But I may have that backwards. It shouldn't much matter in a typical scenario anyway.
