Show/don't show hidden files action in folder options have got interchanged.

Q: Show/don't show hidden files action in folder options have got interchanged.

Hello,
In 'folder options' the action of 'show' and 'don't show' hidden files have got interchanged.

So, when I select 'don't show' hidden files are shown, and vice versa.

How to get this back to normal?
Thanks!

Royce.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey Guys, I cannot find a soultion to this problem. I was using my desktop like normal then an error came up saying that there was a hdd failure, and that i needed to scan for errors. all my files disappeared and only this error would come up. There would be hundreds of the same msg spamed on my screen. I scaned my hdd for errors using my Bios/Advanced options and no errors came up. I decided to take out the hdd and put it into my External Hdd bay to hook up to my laptop to extract the data off it.

When i hooked it up to my laptop it showed up empty. I went into folder options and clicked on show hidden files and folders. Everything came up but it was grey/transparent. I then copied the files to another hdd for backup.

Then i formatted the hdd and put on a fresh new OS. Id like to mention i have a second internal drive that i use for backups but it wasnt backed up recently when this issue happen so i had to take out the main drive and use it as an external to back up onto another external drive.

so then when i click on my second internal drive after the reinstall of the new OS it shows empty i have to go in and show hidden files and folders.. now they show again transparent. also i plug in my external to get the recent back up and all those files are still transparent when i move them to my desktop that is freshly OS installed they are still grey/transparent and i have to keep the show hidden files and folders to view them.. so its all my music, pics, documents etc th... Hi, guys.

After my pc has been infected by the "bagle prague" (hldrrr/wintems/flec006/srosa) i got cleaned by a software called Regrun. But the malwares have left some problems on my pc. The main problem is : In Control Panel / Folder option / View, i canīt find the options related to "show hidden files". In this forum there is a solution already posted, but it didnīt solve my problem.
The member says to go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden]
and change the value into "group" My problem is : I do not have this last folder in the registry line ("hidden").
I mean, there is [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder] and in this folder ("folder") thereīs no "hidden" folder. So I canīt change the value of "hidden" īcause thereīs no "hidden". Help me please, thanks.

Welcome to Sevenforums.
Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec (left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

In the System Manufacturer Block, enter:
Manufacturer and Model and
ADD the word laptop, desktop, netbook or tablet.
For example:
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the ?Other Info? block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

You will find that in Speccy, you can select info from the display
using your mouse/touchpad and then paste that info into your specs.

SIW is a marvelous program, but the free version does not offer
this capability.

Most people suggest editing the registry key for it (at [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advan ced\Folder\Hidden] ), but i don't have "Hidden" in the "Folder" directory of my registry. If you have any ideas how to fix this without reinstalling windows, it'd help a lot. Thanks in advance guys, i see that you are doing a very good job here.P.S. Hello:  I wanted to delete every fragment of AVG TuneUp, and thought I had done so, both with manual means and via the tool they claim removes everything.  I ran a scan recently to check if all my stuff was up to date, and voila, a component of AVG is still there.  Furthermore, I ran a FRST scan to see where it's located and it's in a hidden folder (not cool). Tried to research how to unhide it and nothing works.  I don't want to venture into FRST fixlist territory or the registry because I don't know what I'm doing.  Thanks for any guidance.   Windows 8.1 by the way.

I am trying to setup a default user or machine setup for how win7 handles folder view options. I want show hidden folders to be set to on for all users and the hide extensions for know file types to be unchecked or turned off ffor all users (so extensions show)
I have located them in the registry but they do not seem to be applied to all users.
Below is the registry settings I have set

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"Hidden"=dword:00000001
"HideFileExt"=dword:00000000

When I create a new account to test the folder options are still hiding hidden files and not showing extensions.

Any suggestions

thx

A:show hidden folders show file extensions thru registry

You're close but in the wrong area.

Code:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"HideFileExt"=dword:00000000
"Hidden"=dword:00000001
show and hide files is a profile specific key and therefore can be modified by user accounts. if you would like to change the default, navigate to key:
HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current version\explorer\advanced\folder\hidden and \hidefileext
there are keys in there that set default behaviors.

Hi,

I am guessing this will be either incredibly easy and I am missing something, or incredibly difficult to achieve.

But what I am wanting is to setup my system so that one partition has the ability to view all of the hidden windows files and folders and also hidden system files.

However at the same time for none other partitions on my PC to have this ability.

I can set this up affecting all paritions but there are some that I do not want this feature on.

I know I can laboriously keep switching it back and forth on the drive I want but I would not like to have to do this unless absolutely necessary.

So does anyone know any method that I can achieve what I am wanting.

Thanks

I managed to show them back by using regedit by following some guides by setting the value of Hidden and ShowSuperHidden to 1.

May i know are there any method to clear of this problem and showing the hidden folder again by using the normal way. I find it troublesome because if I checked the folder options then the value of Hidden in regedit is reset to 0 again..

hi ,

I am facing a strange problem in my windows 7 PC now. Yesterday I made one folder hidden in my F:/ drive. Today I want to un-hide it. I went to "Folder and Search Options" >> View Tab and then "Show hidden files and folders". Then I applied and OK the changes. Still I don't see my hidden file. The F:/ drive shows that I have 7GB of data in it. But it shows a folder of 98MB only.

Please help. I am stuck up here.

A:How to show my hidden folder again after I hide it?

Try opening Windows Explorer as an administraitor, or use another file explorer such as WinRAR, which is unaffected by Windows Explorer settings such as hidden files. If you still do not see any files, then prehaps your memory device has been corrupted and you have multiple 'bad sectors' on your device (assuming its flash-memory based)

Hi all.

I've searched the forum but I can't find any solution to this problem.

Now with previous versions of Windows in the folder options you could see file types tab which shows all file extensions that are registered and which app opens each extension. On Vista this part isn't available/visible. The main reason being is I want to change the default icon to something else.

Does anyone know how I can view this option in Vista 32bit?

Cheers.

You may have to un-hide protected operating system files to see that folder in Explorer.

Running Winaso registry cleaner some time ago revealed 500 odd registry errors that were fixed and a subsequent run some time later revealed few problems. Running Winaso again yesterday discovered hundreds of errors again.

Kaspersky seemed to have trouble getting past; PE_Patch.Juba, and Googling suggests there may be something hidden in there.

This machine runs well enough but Firefox not responding, and slowness on internet activity are symptoms.

A:Show hidden files that remain hidden

Welcome to the forum.

The "Documents and settings" folder has been obsolete since Vista. You should be using the "Users" folder". The "Documents and settings" folder is just a link maintained for compatibility with old software. Windows Explorer will never give you access by this route no matter what you do.

The "System Volume information" folder has special protection, even from an admin account, and should not be accessed unless you really understand what you are doing.

Registry cleaners are more trouble than they are worth and should be avoided. The validity of the errors found is often questionable. Many will find errors after a clean install. Others will find many errors and supposedly correct them but after another scan it will find the same errors. They have numerous pother problems as well.

There's a difference between hidden files and system files. To view hidden files, you need to check Show hidden files, folders and drives in the Folder Options. From there, if you want to see the system files you need to unchecked Hide protected operating system files (recommended). Then you'll see every files and folders on your system.

HiI wasn't sure whether this was a general Windows problem, or a possible malware. I'm guessing the latter:I am a student at University, and about two days ago when logging onto a PC in the labs, I noticed a folder called 'desktop.exe' on the desktop (a folder, not an executable). I didn't bother with it, except to notice that it looked odd, and I plugged in my flash drive. Windows recognized and labeled it as the H drive. I had My Computer open and was browsing through my files, when I noticed a folder was generated in the root directory of my flash drive, called "H.exe". Unfortunately I was in too much of a rush to consider it, and the folder disappeared (it was probably set to 'hidden').I immediately thought my flash was infected with someone's homemade malware, but I had no choice other than to plug it into my laptop at home to do some work. I had almost forgotten about the problem, until I tried viewing hidden files and folders and found the "Show hidden files and folders" option remained unchecked no matter how many times I repeated its selection. Hi, I have a problem with Windows XP when setting folder options. When I choose tools -> folder options -> view, then I checked "Show hidden files and folders " radio box, then Apply button and Ok but it does not show my hidden files. When I open the same window again it shows that "Show hidden files and folders" radio box is unchecked. I dont know what is the problem.

here is the fresh hijackthis log:

Hi everyone,

Need some help with an interesting problem I'm having. I'm currently using a laptop with Windows XP installed. Both the choices for Show Hidden Files and Folders options are on for Folder Options. So, currently I can't see any of the hidden files. I included a screenshot of the problem.

Any idea on how to fix this? Maybe modifying a registry entry? Other buttons seems to work fine, except for the above mention problem. I tried to click on Restore Defaults, and the defaults are all restored except for this one.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

A:Can't show hidden files and folders

Greetings zentana01, and Welcome to TSF!

For you to be able to 'see' the hiddens system folders, you will need to check the box marked "Display the contents of system folders".

Do this and they will be visible on your C: drive.

Windows? has this box unchecked by default, as it is considered to be 'dangerous' for the uninitiated to be tampering with the system folders, in case one is accidently deleted, which could render the O/S inoperable.

Hopefully this answers your question; if not, feel free to post back with any other queries/concerns.

Hi gentle guys,I have been thru the guidelines in "Am I infected" forum to clean my PC which seems infected still. I was directed by the assistants there to do a Hijack and post it here. I have done Hijack using RSIT and here is the log. Please take a look and kindly advise me what to do. A:USB drive and hidden files do not show up

Hi,I understand that you need help in order to get rid of the malware that is present on your system - But you need to help us first..I notice that you never scanned with an Antivirus previously before starting this thread - because you don't even have an Antivirus installed! This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. That's why I want you to install one first!!* Please install Avira Antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/This is a free Antivirus.Perform a full scan with Avira and let it delete everything it is finding. Then reboot. After reboot, open your Avira and select "reports".There doubleclick the report from the Full scan you have done. Click the "Report File" button and copy and paste this report in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog. Then we'll start from there, because it really makes no sense otherwise that we clean this up manually if an Antivirusscan is not present which should be able to deal with most and prevent further reinfection.

Hello there and welcome to Bleeping Computer's security forum. You are using Download Accelerator - DAP Be informed that it delivers popup/popunder ads, and tracks your internet usage. You can find safer alternatives here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php?cat=dlman#dlmanI suggest you remove it. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove itI see a clean log here, there are no signs of malware or anything that may cause the hidden file problems you are having. Hi there,
I've got a fresh install of windows 8, with bitdefender loaded just after. I then transferred saved files from another hdd, which wasn't connected during install, to the windows 8 hdd. I now can't access hidden files. Whenever I tick the show hidden files box it resets? I tested by hiding a file which no longer appears no matter what I do...I've tried the registry trick of show files = 1.
I've run bitdefender - clean
Malware bytes crashes on scan
malwarebytes antiroot kit comes up clean

I'm at a loss as to where to go to now?
Thanks for any help

I have two main issues.

I get a dos command box that opens up periodically and closes itself, and I can't show hidden folders/files.

The facts are these:
1. I have full admin permissions
2. When I try to show hidden files/folders and uncheck "hide system files and folders" and click ok or apply, nothing happens. When I go back to the folders options again, they are both back to the where they were.
3. When I try to run DSS, it crashes right after displaying cleaning up files.
4. I have uninstalled the ServU program (FTP program).

here's panda log:
