the Basic MS SideWinder Joystick bttns problem

Q: the Basic MS SideWinder Joystick bttns problem

I got this joystick installed first time in win98se and checked it in
Gaming Options and found out that buttons 2 and 6 werent working, so I went to Device Manager and removed the USB Human Interface Device and tried to reinstall it, at hardware install dialog I went for "Display List of Devices" and there were 2 versions of USB Human Interface Devices there [4-23-1999] and [some-2002], so I used the latest one and voila , all buttons worked nice. After a couple of days I can make
use on button 2 (secondary fire) in the game, I check up the gaming options control panel and in Side Winder Joystick properties the buttons 2 and 6 didnt work again. I tried to reinstall like 20 times and never got it right again.
Also in Device manager, there under "Sound, video and game controllers" a new control is placed "HID
compilant game controller" , I tried to tweak it, changing version but it dont make any diff neither.

Anybody?
I have an old puter AMD 450MHz , 256MB CL2 RAM, TNT2U 32MB, Epox MPV3-G2 mobo, all drivers installed 4in1, video , audio and such. No apparent porblems beside this one. Geez I ve only managed toplay a
couple of times and dang it wont work.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a MS Sidewinder Pro 2USB joystick which I haven't used in years. Been sitting in a closet. But the new game called H.A.W.X. is coming out and I've been playing the demo.

At first, the joystick refused to be recongized by my system. (stats below) which is an Intel system. Either from the front or rear USB ports. If I plug the joystick into another computer here (AMD system) it is seen and works.

I've tried several times and have located the drivers on the internet. But when I plug in the joystick into either computer - its like the joystick is dead. Nothing shows up. No errors or anything - nada.

At one point, it did show up for a while on my intel computer (after I installed the drivers)... but as of now, nothing. The joystick looks as good as new. Its one of the better things made by MS in design in terms of function and feel. There is NOTHING on the market that compared to these old 2001~2004 joysticks.

From what I can see with google, the USB connection seems to die on these things. So I am guessing I'm going to have to buy a joystick.

I've looked at whats left on the market that I can buy.
Saitek: While customizable, these are flimsy - the trigger button is not comfortable... and breaks easily since I've owned one before I bought the sidewinder. Fairly low cost at about $20~25.

Logitech: Better feel, a bit large. Same design from 2003ish. Problem from reviews is that that they seem to stop functioning, even if stored for months... Read more

I own a Microsoft Sidewinder Pro, it is of the style that hooks up to my Soundblaster Soundcard (not USB) . When I upgraded to XP I found out that it is not supported by XP. I am having a problem with my Sidewinder 2 using a USB port. When I first turn my computer on, the computer cannot see the joystick. If I unplug and then reconnect the joystick, Windows XP (Home Edition) will see it and it will be functional. Everything is OK until I turn the computer off. When it is booted back up again, the joystick will have to be unplugged and reconnected again to make it work. It has to be disconnected and reconnected each time after reboot to make it functional. Can't find drivers for the joystick at Microsoft, so i assume they are built into Windows XP. Any ideas? Thanks.

This may seem like a stupid question, but have you installed the software for the controller. If you have, there's a small green switch on the back where the connection cable enters. Change it to the other position, then back and try it again.

Good Luck!

A:Microsoft Sidewinder Joystick Problems

if your joystick is usb plug n play then it should have found it. if not usb and plugs into a sound card then you will have to load the driver cd. only other thing could be that the usb cable end is bad or the stick itself. you might try a restart but I doubt that would make a difference on usb. bottom line sticks are cheap. Logitech extreme 3d pro can be had for $25.00 dollars just about anywhere.

I still have my MS Sidewinder Force Feedback peripherals (joystick and wheel). Both are the later USB revisions. They worked to perfection on Windows 7 (just plug and play) but do they work/get recognised by Windows 10?

The way my machine is setup it will be quite an undertaking running the wires etc in and around the desktop and cramped desk space so I'd like to be confident they would still work

does anyone still use these peripherals or similar types? I found it dissapointing MS turned its back on the sidewinder products. Have never been able to get to grips with game pads really. Playing a driving game or flight sim with a game pad just feels unnatural.

If it worked on 7, it likely will work in 10, you may have to reinstall drivers, but in all likely hood the upgrade should be fine.

I came across an excellent flight simulator (Flight Gear) that makes me want to take the old M/S joystick out of moth balls. Trouble is when I hooked it up, it apparently does not know Windows 7 x64bit from apple butter!
I have a USB adapter that shares a USB2 with a 15 pin game port; so obviously they both function as USB2 ports. The old joystick has a 15 pin plug on it and attaches to this connector, but nothing happens. The machine does not recognize it.
Can this 15 pin game port connection function connected through a USB2 to the Motherboard? Can settings be made to tell the machine that it is there or will the Microsoft sidewinder force feedback joystick just not function in that lash-up?
Trying to load the factory included programs/drivers fails because it will not allow Windows 7 to load them. If this type of connection will not function, is there some kind of a card I could get to make it function? And it that is available how does one go about getting a driver that will function with a W-7 x64bit system.
Lots of questions; LOTS of thanks!

However, I did on another computer, Windows XP, and worked correctly.
Then I upgrade Windows 7. Currently, I am with the build 7201.

When i plug the joystick into the USB ,My PC finds it and adds it to CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM>DEVICE MANAGER> under the sound video and game controllers. when i click on the CONTROL PANEL>GAME DEVICES however, it isnt listed as being even present on my system. I cant add the device because it isnt listed to add and when i try to add it as a 4 button 3 axis joystick (for example) it just comes up as being not connected. Strange thing is, I have Falcon 4.0 which actually recognises that it is there and enables me to use it, But any game (e.g Flight Sim 2002) which looks in GAME DEVICES to see what joystick you have, Doesnt find it and therefore i cant use it. Does anyone have any idea how to get this to register in game devices so i can use it. Both my USB ports are working correctly, everything is installed correctly and there are no system conflicts. Hi guys,

My problem is this;

I recently formatted my computer before I went to university to clean all the crap my parents had on the computer off. Before I did the format, my Sidewinder Gamepad worked fine as I used to use it for Tony Hawks.

After the format however, I plug it in, the light comes on, but the computer does not detect its presence. In Game Controllers it does not appear on the list, I tried manually adding it using the Sidewinder Auto Detect function. It adds Sidewinder 3D Pro to the list and says
its Not Connected. I'm not totally sure what model the Gamepad actually is, its not a 3D Pro I don't think, it doesn't have force feedback and just says Microsoft Sidewinder TM on the back. It looks exactly like this:

http://www.geizkragen.de/img/150/30735.jpg.

To connect the pad to the computer I'm using the Gameport on my Soundblaster Audigy, as I always have. I have installed the same soundblaster drivers as were running before (to my knowledge anyway- I used the ones on the disk it came with).

If anyone could help me out in getting it to work it would be greatly appreciated. As I said, the Sidewinder did work before I formatted, so I must have just deleted some driver or not set some setting back the way it was before when I reinstalled everything. What that is though I cannot think.

One thing I have tried is looking at the I/O range of the Gameport. Apparently there is a similar issue with Soundblaster Live cards and Sidewinders in ... Read more

I'v got a PC Phantom joystick which has developed a fault. On both the x and y axes, there is no longer an output proportional to stick movement, the output snaps from one extreme to the other, making control impossible. There is also a fair bit of jitter when the stick is left alone. The throttle and buttons still work.

I've looked inside and tried to check the track on the pots. to no avail, although I could tell that there was no mechanical damage. I've also re-installed it. I can't find the manufacturers and shops say its not worth repairing. Is there anything I can try before I bin it and get a new one.

Ok heres the problem, I own a Compaq 6029us computer with a compaq mobo, built in sound/video/usb etc. I have a MS sidewinder dual strike(about a year old) and am running on Windows Home XP(compaq version). My last computer was built by me and I had no problems plugging in the joystick to the USB and Windows XP PRO would autodetect it. In fact It still works with my other system.
When I plug in the joystick on this computer I get nothing. When I go to add to my Game Controllers it says "Your gameport or gameport drivers are not properly configured. Please see the Device Manager."
So in the device manager there is no gameport under sound, video, game controllers tab. I tried manually installing a gameport(standard, Ess, Neomagic etc.) and none of them work. I looked on MS for some drivers but MS claims that they are all built into windows. I tried looking for gameport drivers from Compaq(waste of time), I called compaq and asked them about this problem. They couldn't tell me how to install a gameport(though they said I should have one) and they told me it was a problem with the joystick and I would have to contact MS for help, which is not true because the joystick works fine on my other computer. I know its because there is no gameport/driver. But they couldn't get one to work and couldn't explain why . So that was a waste of time.

Not that I'm aware of. Some say it won't work in XP and others say it may. When it's pluged in do you see it listed as a device in Gaming Controllers..advanced tab?? My understanding is that XP has default drivers if the sidewinder precision pro is used via the USB port...not a game port.

I'm trying to connect my MS Sidewinder Freestyle Pro to a USB port (it doesn't work on the joystick port).

In Device Manager it is listed under Human Interface Devices with a black exclamation mark on yellow triangle, and when I double-click it it says it couldn't load the device driver (code 2).

So when I click 'Update Driver' it finds one, and when I tell it to go ahead it prompts me to insert "Windows 98 Second Edition CD-Rom". (I don't have this, should I have got it supplied with my PC?)

Anyway, I tell it to skip file, and the 3 files it needs but can't find are:

hidusb.sys
msjstick.drv
vjoyd.vxd

(By the way, when I connected it to the normal joystick port it didn't even list it in device manager - it's as though it didn't realise it was plugged in, which is why I'm using the USB port.)

I have installed DirectX 7.0a but that didn't help, and my sound card is by C-Media (CM18738/C3DX PCI Audio Device) who I can't find on the net for updates. I use Win 98.

Sorry to have gone on for so long but I thought I should put as much info as possible.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Steve

This may be why it doesn't work on your soundcard. http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ARTICLES/Q193/3/43.asp
As for the USB, you do need those files and they will be located on the CDRom. If you don't have the cdrom then you chould have the cab files on your hard drive and should be able to point the driver update to those files when it needs them. Find out where your cab files are by going to start then find files and folders, Search for *.cab it should find quite a few files. The ones you want will be called win98_##.cab where the ## will be a specific number. There should be quite a few all in the same location with consecutive numbers. Run the driver update again and when it needs those files point it to the directory where the cab files are at. The cab files should be on your computer if you don't have the win98 cd.
Then check out this page http://support.microsoft.com/support/Hardware/FreeStylePro/faq/default.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0

I just bought a precision 2 joystick and it installed painlessly and seems to be working like a charm...until I try to use it in a game! It is detected and on the right ID (#1) but when I get into my games (Mechwarrior 2 & 3) the buttons aren't seen by the configuration tools. I can map them fine in Mechwarrior 2, but Mechwarrior 3's mapping tool doesn't see them at all. During gameplay it will use a default in both games and seems to drop a few of the buttons (even the trigger!). I am using DX 8.0 with 144MB RAM. Any ideas?

I just put my Sidewinder joystick on my computer again. The built in drivers work great but the system won't allow me to install the profiler included with the original drivers CD.
MS's site was as abyssmal and useless as usual. They had updated versions of the profiler but it said to use it on win98 and no indication was made as to its use with xp.
Anybody have a download site for me?

Has anybody ever opened a Sidewinder 3D Pro? I'm trying to pull it apart to clean the buttons, they stick and cause all sorts of wierdness during games. I'm stuck on the base. There are four screws under the base and it seems there is a series of plastic tabs holding the unit together resisting my rehabilitation attemps.
