Q: Error message: An error occurred while loading a file. AOL will attempt to restore...

I have an error message: An error occurred while loading a file. AOL will attempt to restore the file. My emails, however, are affected. I have email icons without subjects. The emails do open but I cannot know what they are or who sent them prior to opening and I cannot download attachments, answer or forward the messages. This is a potential disaster if I cannot fix this quickly.

Any help appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Error message: An error occurred while loading a file. AOL will attempt to restore...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can someone please help me on this problem?

I have this message on this laptop once windows has loaded.

'Failed to save setting. An error occurred loading a configuration file: unable to open file'C:\users\.....etc...'

Apparently whilst web browsing something occured and on reboot this message appears and the profile doesn't load properly user documents and software not there etc..

Within the start menu the list of program folders are there but the folders are empty. Looking through the c drive and finding my way to the programs the stuff is there.

I created a new admin user to see what that does. The folders are still empty.

This is a windows 7 HP laptop. It also doesn't have a cd disc drive or a window disk apparently.

Many thanks in advance.

A:Failed to save setting. An error occurred loading a configuration file

"This is a windows 7 HP laptop. It also doesn't have a cd disc drive or a window disk apparently."

If it has no CD drive it is most likely a "netbook" & not a laptop.
Try "rolling back" the system to an earlier date using System Restore:
Click Start > Run...........
Type rstrui in the run box, then click 'OK'

Hi, you could try a system restore. If this fails or is not available try this. Desktop items are stored in a cache, this can become corrupted causing what you see. To fix right click on the taskbar and select Task manager. When Task Manager opens under the Applications tab click on "new Task" type:- explorer.exe press ok. Your desktop should repopulate. At this time reboot your computer. If all is well then the problem is fixed if not:-

Repeat the task manager (as above) and new explorer.exe then follow this:-

Go to Start all programs accessories and right click on command prompt select ?run as administrator?

At the prompt type:- taskkill /im explorer.exe /f press enter
(Your desktop will go blank)

Now type each line and press enter after each line.
Note the spaces.

I turned on my PC today for the first time in maybe 6mo, slow to boot up but that's expected. Got maybe ten minutes into using it (just fine, might I add. Linked to wifi, etc) and Norton popped up needing to restart the computer. Hit restart now, ten minutes
go by, PC is still trying to shut down. Black screen but the fan is running. I shut it off completely, push the power button again, and get the disc error. Try to restart twice with CtrlAltDel but same error. Finally soft reset (or try to, no indication that
holding the power button does anything) and then got the "Error loading operating system" screen. Now depending on how I restart it (trying to boot from the BIOS menu or boot menu) I get the disc read error but eventually come back to the OS error.

Nothing can get me into the system, period. I'm doing this from a secondary non-PC device. Any help is appreciated. I can get by on software fixes but I'm completely useless with hardware so all of the quick fix tips I've vaguely read have mentioned removing
things from the actual console which I'm hoping I won't have to do.
Please help thanks

I downloaded the SAC Desktop Alert from www.steepandcheap.com today on my work computer. (It works fine on my personal computer.) However, when the alert attempts to pop up & play the alert sound, which is a WAV file, the following message pops up:

"Sonic CinePlayer Decoder Pack - Please wait while Windows configures Sonic CinePlayer Decoder Pack"

The following message pops up on top of the one above:

"Sonic CinePlayer Decoder Pack - An installation package for the product Sonic CinePlayer Decoder Pack cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'CPDP.msi'."

After clicking "OK" several times (the error messages repeat 3 times), then those pop ups will go away & the SAC alert box will go ahead & pop up. However, it is suppose to pop up w/o the errors & play the alert (as it does on my home computer).

I looked in my Program Files & there is a "Sonic" file that includes a "CinePlayer Decoder Pack" file w/ a "cmdvdpakENU.dll CinePlayer DVD Decoder Pack Resources" file w/in it.

I'm not sure if this version is what I need to avoid these errors & if it was just a matter of allowing something to point to this Sonic file?

Also, if I go into the "SteepAndCheap" program file, then "Desktop Alert", then "Resources", then "SAC", there is the "alert" WAV file. When I click o... Read more

A:Error Message Follows File Loading

This is likely because XP CD doesn't have the more modern SATA drivers for your HD.

They need to be slipstreamed into the installer, unless you have a floppy drive you can load them from during Driver Loading phase at F6 prompt.

How To Slipstream SATA Drivers Into XP CD

Have you tried installing your older programs in XP compatibility mode offered by Win7? Right click on their .exe files, select Properties, then Compatibility Tab. Run as Admin. It works about half the time, I have found. Try also the Wizard, which may want you to dial it back even further to SP1 or 2000.

If there is a configuration/settings file, backup somewhere and delete to see if game will recreate a default one.

You can also try to install the DirectX installer possibly in game/redist folder. Maybe it got corrupted somehow.

I recently installed service pack 3 for Office 2003. Now when I open Excel I get the following error message:

Microsoft Visual Basic

If I click yes Excel opens correctly, however Module1 (which contains macros from personal.xls) is not accessable. Any suggestions?

A:An error occurred while loading 'Module1'.

I have no way of knowing if this will work, but I would do the following.
Copy personal.xls to a removable storage divice, then try opening it in Excel 2007, or OpenOffice, on a different PC.
If successful, then save the macros into a text file. Delete the original personal.xls, and then create a new one.
Copy the macros back from the text file.

A:An error occurred while loading Form in Access database

Hi Quetzal, welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Later versions of Access use an .accdb suffix & not the .mdb suffix & this is the cause of your problem. As you mentioned updating from Access 2003 I assume you are now using Access 2013, so these websites might help you.
In the first one scroll down to the links contained in it & follow those as well. The second one may not be relevant but it does contain some info that might be of interest to you.

No, you cannot change to UEFI/Secure Boot without a complete reload of the operating system.

I saw a few old posts about this same topic, but none quite fit my situation so I'm starting a new post to request help/suggestions. Sorry for the length, but the instructions say to be as detailed as possible.

My System: I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit on an HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC.

MY PRIMARY PROBLEM: Inability to do a System Restore after multiple attempts using various restore points.

First, I'm including what predicated my original attempt to do a system restore. While working on my computer on Sunday evening, some sort of error message popped up, but it disappeared before I really saw what it said. However, the result was that when I next switched to IE8, it wasn't working properly. I seem to recall it saying something about "i.exe" in the original quick message that disappeared on me & later saw something about missing java script, but this was before I knew I had a big problem so I didn't actually note the details.

My first step at resolving this was my standard one - Shutdown & Restart. When I did this, I stepped away from the computer & came back to see that it was doing a disk check. As it does this from time to time for no apparent reason, I wasn't too worried. However, when the system came back online, there were several obvious issues including.
My background picture changed back to some sort of default & all of my desktop icons were rearranged to sort of a standard setup. The items that ... Read more

A:Unspecified Error Occurred During System Restore

Hello Suzyc!

Excellent work on your post! It is very rare for someone to make so much effort, and it makes so much of a different to us!

I have seen similar issues to these before. All slightly different, but I know of a few things to check out.

1) Click on the Start Orb > Computer > C:\ > Users

You must do it through My Computer please, as instructed. Do you see two copies of your Account Name. For example, if this were me:

All Users
Default User

^ Two of my name. Tell me if this is the case on your computer.

I doubt this will be the case.

Go into your Account Folder (Richard for me)

Are there two Document folders, two Downloads folders, etc. etc.

If there are, go into each one in turn. One will contain your actual data, one will contain the data of a new computer. Delete the ones which come from a new computer, leaving only the ones with your data in them.

Log off and back on again.

2) Norton is not the only program to do this. What anti-malware tools do you have. McAfee, MSE, ESET, Spybot S+D with Tea Timer, Webroot

The two in bold have a far worse reputation of causing this problem than Norton does. I need to know if you have either of these two programs installed.

3) Are you backups disconnected and safe?

4) I need to take two logs. The first log will help me diagnose your System Restore issue, your SFC result, and other lurking problems.

Please navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\ and copy CBS.log to your Desktop. Rig... Read more

I made a restore disk on my 64bit win7 desktop for my 64bit win7 laptop because windows stopped loading. Now when I try different restore points I get the same problem. Should I make a new disk? What else could I try?

Post about original problem

I have a normal stock dell desktop with windows 7.

I borrowed my grandmothers laptop. It is an Acer Aspire 5736Z-4790 w/ an Intel Processor. Last night after trying to install some files to make some cheat programs I use for an online game (I have loaded same programs 10x on other computers so I doubt its related to the programs themselves) One thing I did do was try to delete a winhttp.dll file in system32 or the WOW one(for 64bit computers? Forget the folders name) and replace it with another one(Directions for the cheats said to make sure that winhttp.dll was in sys32) and while trying to do that windows would not let me so I read somewere that there is a program that lets you "take ownership of a file" so you can override permissions. I then took ownership of sys32 and maybe the 64bit folder as well. It still did not let me replace any files in sys32 so I then restarted and when windows opened again, desktop loaded then an error message came up, then it restarted itself, and repeated, but after the second time it restarted itself windows would not load. After the Acer manufacture screen, just the blank black ... Read more

Hello there!

I'm currently running Vista on my Compaq laptop. Unfortunately (long story) my key for Avast Antivirus expired in January 09 and I was unable to input the key code until September 09, so I guess the virus found it's way onto my computer during that time.
I ran a scan after finaly inputting the key and Avast found several infected items. Some could be removed, but since that scan I've been getting the following message after starting-up the laptop:-

Error loading C:/Windows/TEMP/msxm192z.dll

Also, since the initial scan and appearance of this error message I've been having various problems -
* Laptop running slow
* Media player not running (won't open/run) - cannot play any music!
* Photo Gallery icon blank and won't open - cannot access my photos!

I've since uninstalled Avast and installed a free version of AVG. Neither seem to be able to get rid of this virus.

I also followed the advice given to another member of this forum. I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

My apologies if this has been gone over before, but i'm asking this in desperation (almost) !.  I used Outlook Express for years when i had Win.XP on my old PC without a single problem. In the last 18 months, since i've had my new PC Win.7 Home Premium 64 bit. i've had to use Windows Live Mail & it's utter c**p !. Almost every day without fail, when trying to send or open an e-mail,i get the rerror message attached. The only way i can get Live Mail to send or open any e-mail, is to log off & re-boot my PC ,which is a PITA,especially as when a few months ago,i was taking part in some pretty lively correspondence on line.   Is there a definitive cure for this problem other than switching to another e-mail system  ?. I've searched the I/net for a solution, but all i find areboat loads of others with exactly the same problem & no answer & definitely no respose from Microsoft.   I would get rid of Live Mail & install another mail system if only i was sure that i wouldn't make a total mess of it as i'm not 100% PC literate. So,any serious advice will be deeply appreciated,

Hello I am looking for some help as I cannot seem to find any fix for this problem after hours of searching online.
Up until yesterday I had no issues with windows running at all, however after turning on my PC after coming home from work that day windows now fails to load. I have checked all the hardware is working fine and the computer starts up ok until windows tries
to start. At this point I get the windows error recovery screen asking to start windows normally, or to launch startup repair.
Startup repair reports that it 'cannot repair this computer automatically' and asks to send an information report of the problem.
From this point I can navigate to a list of system recovery options, however  when I try to carry out a system restore from any of the recovery points I am presented with the message:
'System restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.
System restore failed while scanning the file system on the drive D:\
The drive might be corrupt. You might want to retry system restore after running chkdsk /R on this disk.
An unspecified error occurred during system restore. (0x80070057)
You can try system restore again and choose a different restore point. If you continue to see this error, you can try an advanced recovery method. For more information, see
What is recovery?'
I can not even get windows to start in any form of safe mode and so at the moment I am complete... Read more

A:Windows 7 failing to boot, error 0x80070057 on restore attempt

Do exactly what it says and hit F8 just before windows loads to bring up the boot menu, then go into the system restore area and open the command prompt.  From there, you can run chkdsk /r and see if it will repair the disk.
You can also try to restore to a previous time in the last couple weeks using system restore while in that menu.  Hope that helps!

Please help!!! I downloaded an ATI Graphics driver from the sony website then when I launched the installer, it says: "checking system information.." then after that something will pop up saying "an I/o error occurred while installing a file. This is normally caused by a bad installation media or a corrupt installation file." What's wrong with this? I used internet download manager to download the file, although while I was downloading it, there was a blackout... but when the electricity came back I quickly resumed downloading it.

thanks in advance.

A:An I/O error occurred while installing a file

Think you've answered your own question - my guess would also be a corrupt installation file. I'd download it again over the one previously and try to install again.

OK, I have Windows 7 64-bit installed. Whenever I try to install a program called Auslogics Disk Defrag or Auslogics BoostSpeed, en error message pops out which says an error occurred while trying to read the source file.

I am using Download Accelerator Plus and I can download these files with no problems. But whenever I try installing them, this error message pops out. I tried to click ignore or retry but it did not install these programs.

What is the reason for this?

Hello Blanchflower,

In my honest opinion, I think it's time to start looking into a clean reinstall of Windows 7. Considering your previous problem with viewing video, it sounds like there is something just not right about your PC at the moment.

Sometimes you invest a lot less time starting over from scratch than getting to the root of multiple problems.

Please listen to me as others would suggest to you just as well... Image your new installation of Windows. When you start having problems like this, you could just reload the image and everything will be fixed in a matter of minutes.

Just something for you to consider.

When I startup my computer as the desktop launches a message comes up stating:

The specified module could not be found

What does that mean and how is it affecting my computer. When I run a system scan with Norton Internet Security and SystemWorks it says my computer is fine but I know that has to be doing something. Does anyone know?

Thanks in advance for any help that might be offered.

About a year ago I installed a cyber sitter called "iProtectyou" on my son's computer. I decided to uninstall it for him recently because it didn't work, and it only seemed to give him a hassle when he tried to use the internet or play games. When I tried to reinstall it, it would not take the password I used (I could of forgotten it, but I had it written down).

After hours of trying to uninstall it, I went to the internet and Googled how to get rid of cyber sitter's with a forgotten password. Luckily there were several people with the same problem. I downloaded the applications they gave out on the site, and eventually got rid of it. They also had me go to the "Registry Editor" (run: regedit) and screw around in there. The program still shows up in "Programs and Features" but theirs no publisher now, and I still cannot install it. Except now, instead of asking for a password, it just says that their was an error with database.

Now when ever we open up anything, we are swarmed with windows telling us "Crictical Error Occured While Opening Database."

Any help would be great.

Some clients of ours have difficulties installing our MSI application.
When looking into the MSI.log, You see the following error.

DIFXAPP: ENTER: ProcessDriverPackages()
DIFXAPP: ERROR - The operating system you are running on is not supported. Only Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows codenamed Longhorn are supported.
CustomAction MsiProcessDrivers returned actual error code 1603 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox)
MSI (s) (E8:28) [15:06:16:300]: Machine policy value 'DisableRollback' is 0
Action ended 15:06:16: MsiProcessDrivers. Return value 3.

Looking around on the internet, there were 2 suggested fixes:

To resolve this issue, check if the Windows Application Compatibility setting is turned off in Group Policy Object (GPO).

Turn off Windows Application Compatibility as follows:

1. Launch the Microsoft Management Console (mmc.exe) and add the Group Policy Object snap-in
2. Browse to the Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Application Compatibility folder
3. Select "Turn Off Application Compatibility Engine"
4. Set this policy to be enabled in order to turn off Windows Application Compatibility
Use Compatability mode > Users do not have access to them.
Does anyone encountered this error before and know what to do with it?
Thanks in advance!

A:Failed attempt at installing MSI file - DIFxapp error

This MSI is under your control - correct?

Try this: Mark's Stuff: Fixing Error 1603 on MSI installs

You will need Orca MSI Editor from the Platform SDK installation ( I used Windows 7 Platform SDK). For these particular errors, it a problem with the DIFXAPP drivers in the installation package. I got updated files DIFxApp.dll and DIFxAppA.dll from the Windows Driver Kit for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 (from MSDN Downloads).

Open the MSI file in Orca MSI Editor. Select the Binary table on the left. You should see the 2 dll's listed on the right.

Delete each of these rows: right-click on the row and select "Drop Row".
Right click in empty area on the right side and select "Add Row". Navigate to the location of the updated drivers from the Drivers Library (C:\WinDDK\7100.0.0\redist\DIFx\DIFxApp\WixLib\x86). Add both the DIFxApp.dll and DIFxAppA.dll files, making sure the row name is the same as the DLL file name.
Save the MSI file.

hi, do you have a diagnostics partition on your inspiron, on mine I press F12 as the computer boots. If you do, run the extended test on the hard drive. At this point I should ask if your important files/pics etc are backed up as any test on a failing hard drive is intensive. You ask if your hard drive "just crashed", have you tried restarting to see if you have access.

My operating system is XP. My (Western Digital) master drive was getting too cluttered, so I decided to reformat. I changed the BIOS to boot from the CD-ROM and proceeded. After that was completed, I installed a second hard drive (Maxtor Ultra ATA/133 160GB). After insuring the jumpers were in the correct position (my 40G (master) to hold the OS, and the 160G (slave)for storage, I powered up. The OS loaded, but I remembered that I needed to change the BIOS to boot from the hard drive instead of the CD-ROM, and I got the error message "Error loading OS". I was told that I now have a "bad boot sector". If I don't get a cure for this, I'm going to have some unhappy people on my hands, and I was wondering if you might be able to offer a cure. Thank you. Sincerely, Ms. Nongeek

Hi all,

Huge problem regarding permissions on my (massively unstable) PC. I try to run ANYTHING including .dlls with admin permissions and i get a nice little "ding", and error message regarding the relevent .dll and File system error -1073741792, including one just before I get to the logon screen (think it was called "WINMM.dll", which yes, is "microsoft mouse", but my mouse still appears to be working sooooo... confused... lol).

Also, when i try to system restore, I get an unspecified error, code (0x8000ffff). I don't get anymore info, it just apparently can't do it.

All this came about when i started my PC up after changing/installing NOTHING (since it last worked perfectly), and it randomly said the disk integrity of C: (64GB kingston SSD running the OS but no installed programs) had to be checked, before several black screens of text whizzed by, deleting and then repairing registry entries. It has done this once before, (completely different symptoms, but same root cause of this windows integrity checker thingy), but i fixed it by transferring my account files to a new account, deleting the old one, and presto, instant new admin profile with full permissions again, but problem is, what with nothing that requires admin status working, I can't create a new account this time.

If anything seems unclear about what I've just written, please ask, and I'll clarify, but I've been battling with this all day, and need to get some rest befor I ... Read more

What is "restore disk"? Are you talking about system restore feature in Windows or a disk image backup utility or something else?
