Preferred Solution: System restore not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So my little sisters boyfriend deleted all the history on my Google Chrome, 'to free up space' and I think he's been on something weird on my laptop, and want to find out. I googled how to get the history back and the other thing I fully understood was to do a System Restore to back before he deleted it. I did that three times to different points in time, definitely before he did it and it hasn't changed anything. If anyone else has any ideas they would be much appreciated, although please bear in mind I'm not massively great with computers! Thank you

A:How to restore Chrome history, system restore not working?

I don't think you can get it back unless you had a backup, System Restore doesn't affect data so that's why it doesn't work.

Why do you need the History restored anyways?

Hi!
I recently noticed that when I do a Google search, the link redirects me to random ad sites, making it nearly impossible to get to the page that I want. I tried System Restore, only to realize it won't let me go past the last step. Also, my CD/DVD drive doesn't seem to be working. You can watch movies and discs in the drive, but it will not recognize a blank disc for burning music or photos.
I have AVG, and it has only detected tracking cookies. I scan with Malwarebytes on a regular basis, and it never seems to find anything. I scanned with AdAware, and it detected tracking cookies as well. I clean out my Cookies and Temporary Internet Files folder quite frequently, but I can't seem to fix the problem.

Thanks for your help!

Please download RootRepeal Rootkit Detector and save it to your Desktop. * Close all programs and temporarily disable your anti-virus, Firewall and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. * Click this link to see a list of such programs and how to disable them. * Create a new folder on your hard drive called RootRepeal (C:\RootRepeal) and extract (unzip) RootRepeal.zip. When I attempt to turn on System Protection, it doesn't show any drives available when it opens -- it just says that it's searching for available drives and it keeps searching and doesn't stop. Eventually, I'll receive the following Error Message:

"There was an unexpected error in the property page: System Restore encounter an error. Please try to run System Restore again (0x81000203)." also all button are greyed out. I wanted take an image to show you but that's not working either. Is there hope?

Accidentally deleted important files, system restore not working
I accidentally deleted some important files when trying to free up space on my laptop. Now, when I startup, it cannot go to my user. I lost my email settings, other functions. My docs are accessible by going to 'My Computer' then to drive C: then to the user, etc. However, from my Start menu, I can't get to them by simply clicking 'My Documents'.

I've tried to do some 'repairs' using Microsoft Knowledgebase but so far have been unsuccessful. I tried some of the suggested things and have made alist of many of the files that are missing when I tried to do a system repair. These files are not in the recovery section c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386. The list is here:

Lmmib2.dll
spider.exe
clipbrd.exe
hostmib.dll
staxmem.dll
admexs.dll
appconf.dll
iisadmin.dll
iisfecnv.dll
infocomm.dll

I ran HiJackThis and the results are below.

any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks.

Hello to all,

A month back I accidentally deleted the wow6432 node from my registry under system_user. I believe this is the root of all my problems. Once I did that, my toshiba c885 D 64 bit would not boot. I forced the computer to shut down and pressed f12 to get to the system recovery options. I then restored to a point before my blunder. Well, my laptop worked for a while and then magically the screen goes black and will not reboot. I did sestem restore a few more times since I could get a little bit of work done in between restoring and the screen turning black again. After I was fed up with having to run system restore every other day, I decided to run system refresh to keep my files but reset everything else. After restoring I am getting the same problem and find myself again running system restore every other day just to keep working.

My questions are if I completely reinstall windows 8 and start from scratch, will this definitely solve the problem? I thought system refresh would have worked, so I'm not sure. Also, are there any other available options for me to fix my computer without starting from scratch?

Thanks so much in advance! -Aaron

A:System Restore and System Refresh not working completely!

Hi awrontherise,

Since you did not provide your specs, all my suggestions are just speculative in nature; however, I can tell you that a clean install will fix all system software corruption but if you also have hardware and/or driver issues they will have to be addressed separately. So, based on what you have told us so far, I would recommend this as your first step:

Repair Install Windows 8

Now, if the above doesn't work, you may have to take this route:

Clean Install - Windows 8

Good luck.

Hello,
I will try to explain this as best as I can so if you need any more information please ask and I will gladly answer. If this is in the wrong forum I apologize. If it is please redirect me and I will post it there.

I have built 11 computers, all containing the EXACT same hardware and software. I install windows 7(64bit), all the drivers for each component, and activated the copy of windows. The pc will run completely fine running any program I ask it to. The problem does not happen until I reboot the computer, now this is not always on the first reboot. These computers could last a few days and then I reboot and it all breaks. When I randomly reboot the system it will boot up showing problems and asking for a system restore. So I do the system restore and reinstall a few drivers and the same problem will persist.
I eventually get fed up with the whole process and decide to completely reinstall Windows thinking maybe I could have done something wrong(been doing this for 15 years no problem but it happens). After a completely random(as far as I can tell) amount of time and reboots the system will do it again. I am completely stumped on this issue and could really use the help. I have managed to get 2 working for a few weeks now but they hard bent cpu pins from the factory and I straightened them out. The other ones I have checked and they are fine(so it seems).
The System is running an ASUS P8Z77-v PRO motherboard, EVGA Nvidia 650 TI graphics card, i7-3770 CPU(may be an... Read more

I've tried System Restore, but since that doesn't get rid of the documents that have been downloaded, it isn't helping either. What could possibly be wrong?

A:system restore not working on Win 8.1

Hello, Johnf. Sorry to read your having problems.

I just restored mine yesterday. It does take quite a long time. I do remember the busy circle, but I can't for the life of me remember if it changed to a different screen after a while. that sequence took approximately 10 to 15 minutes. It eventually stated it was restarting, the screen went dark, and I could see it working again for approximately 5 minutes. It then booted again and worked again for another 5 minutes before I got a lock screen, then after hitting a key, a sign-in screen.

How long did yours run with the busy circle before you hard reset it? Also, I think it not to be a good idea to hard reset while it's in that mode, but obviously it rebooted to do it again.

Hi,
I have been trying to restore my computer to a couple days previously but it just won't work. I've been trying to do this to restore an art program I use daily that I somehow managed to reset my settings on and I can't fix it. I keep getting the error message 0x80070571 and I ran chkdsk/r last night then ran system restore but it still did not work. I disabled Windows Defender temporarily and it still did not work. I even ran it in Safe Mode and it still didn't work. I scanned for viruses and there's none so I'm pretty sure it's not that. I also went through services.msc and started Volume Shadow Copy service because it wasn't started then restored again but it did not work. Can anyone help? I'm running sfc/scannow at the moment.

It's hard to diagnose the bootup problem -- but it sounds like it might be related to a buggered Windows update. Open the taskmanager (ctrl-alt-del) and see if "svchost.exe" is consuming excess resources.

If it is, run services.msc and locate the entry for Automatic Updates. Double click that and set the startup mode to disabled and reboot. If that resolves the problem you should probably follow the instructions here:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/549822-solved-svchost-exe-slow.html#post4544272

There is also a hotfix that may need to be applied:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891/

>> Problems with System Restore unfortunately usually require that the cache be purged and reset by turning off (disabling) System Restore, rebooting and then turning it back on. This would fix it for the future but of course would be of no help for this current problem.

I was trying to create a restore point every couple of days and it wasn't doing it. So I went into the "task" Scheduler" and tweaked it a bit.

Now I went in today to "System Restore' to see if there were any new restore points made. And not only were there no new restore points made, but there also wasn't any old restore points.

1. Can I "un-tweak the task scheduler because I'm sure that must've been what caused my current problem.

2. Is there any way to repair the damage by getting my restore points back.

PS - I do have another Windows 7 computer and I could probably look at the task scheduler and duplicate the actions. The computer I'm having trouble with his Windows 7 Pro

Perhaps someone knows where in the Registry hives the settings are kept for Task Scheduler and can help you return it to old values.

For the future an additional way to save the Registry is to use ERUNT

It has worked well for me in every NT based flavor of Windows since NT server 4.
(The web site mentions Vista and W7 but I use it also in Windows 8.0)

If you haven't rebooted your machine since the restore point problem started
Last Known Good may be worth a try.

Hello

My system restore fails every time I attempt it. This has happened the last 3 times I had a need to attempt restore. (Three attempts separated by months in time, about different issues.) This time, I am thinking something may be wrong with my system restore function.

In this case, it is simply a matter of trying to roll back a browser update.

I saw a whole list of available restore points, and I went to the second one back - from only a few days ago. The restore failed.

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, OEM from Gateway Laptop about 1.5 yrs old. I allow most updates.

Any Suggestions? Thanks.

I'm having a number of problems with my computer. I have a Dell Dimension 3000. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition w/Service Pack 2. I just recently starting having problems; about 4 days ago. I went into Windows media player 11 to listen to music and it kept skipping. I tried to play a video and it did the same thing. I tried rebooting the system, but that didn't help. I've scanned my computer with Windows Defender, Norton, Spyhunter, and Spynomore. All of them came up with nothing. I've tried to restore it and keeps giving me the "restoration incomplete" screen afterwards. I've tried going back to older restore points, but none of them work. Yesterday, I came home and tried to listen to music again hoping that maybe "it just fixed itself". Right. This time, the music wouldn't even play, and I got an error message that said that there was no audio device installed on my computer. Today, I tried the music again and it plays with the skipping. Progress I guess. Throughout all of this I keep getting error messages saying "generic host process for win32 has encountered a problem and needs to close" and something about a "DrWatson debugger" encountering a problem. I have no idea what either 1 of those means. I don't know if I might have a virus or software problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx!

First thing I would like to know is why were you doing a system restore to begin with? This could be part of the issue you are having now.

Hi I have a windows 8.1 dell laptop ,for some reason system restore is not creating points manually or automatically, when I try to make a restore point manually the working bar just keeps moving at the sane time though I noticed in the device manger a generic volume shadow copy entry will show up with a yellow mark beside it ,I have tried maybe 10-15 times to uninstall this and try system restore again ,but this keeps repeating itself,
I have also went into safe mode but system restore points can't be made under safe mode, I did the repository thing where I rename that folder to old and reset repository in safe mode ,same result any ideas pls Thks

System Restore won't work on this machine - it keeps switching itself off.

If I go to the System Restore settings, I can switch it on and create a restore point. The restore point is then shown if I immediately check the list of available restore points.

After a short period of time, e.g. 20 minutes, checking the System Restore settings shows that it's switched off and my restore point has disappeared.

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks

Seldom does work, really.
You might try a full defrag and try again, but usually when System Restore doesn't work there is no good fix.
Any chance you have an infestation?

I have a HP ZE4430US laptop running XP, sp2. When trying to access Restore, either through Help & Support, or through the System Tools, I get nothing. Help won't even open. Under System Properties, Restore is not turned off. Somehow, somewhere I found the Restore file and clicked on it, and it wouldn't open.

In April, I installed a Maxtor Mini to use as a system backup. Could it have hijacked Restore? Not much info came with it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

See if this helps at all. .

Please try this workaround (you will need your Windows? XP SP2 CD or an integrated SP3 CD if SP3 is installed).

(In the event that you do not have a Windows? XP CD with SP2,(or SP3) you will need to 'borrow' one from a friend or colleague, as the manufacturer's "Recovery Discs" will not work in this instance.)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in your drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting.)

Go start > Run ...in the box type in sfc /scannow ?please take note of the space between the sfc and the /.

This is the System File Checker...it will scan all the Windows? core system files to ensure that they are in their respective correct places, and if not replace them from the CD.

During the scan you may be asked to Insert the CD, if this happens just go retry and let it do its thing.

One important point: While sfc is running, it is not advisable to do any other work, or have any browsers/programs running on the computer, until the scan is complete. (This process will generally take around 45-65 minutes to complete).

If this doesn't work, I would advise doing a repair install using your Windows XP install disc.

My System Restore will not create any restore points. Every attempt is met with the error "System Restore was unable to create a restore point. Please restart the computer and try again". The service is running, and I have turned Restore off, rebooted, then turned it back on to no avail. I cannot find any warnings in Event Viewer. I have even re-installed System Restore and run SFC to no avail. I have run different rootkit and anti-virus programs, but cannot find any of either. Does anyone else have any ideas?

A:System Restore Not Working

I had similar trouble and my appeal for help resulted in LOTS of advice but nothing worked for me. (A search would find my original posting).

What did work for me was my installing the software Super AntiSpyware Free Edition and discovering by chance that there is a Repair section and listed is a repair of Windows System Restore.

I clicked on this and miraculously (!) my problem was solved.

I now have Super AntiSpyware Professional installed but my problem was solved with the Free Edition. Maybe worth a try?

Win 7 64 bit

I have tried restoring to a previous point but it says my files were not changed and that an antivirus may have conflicted. So I did in safe mode. But got the same response. However, I think it is rolling back because a program I had installed disappeared on one attempt and also the updates for NAV 2010 disappear and it has to be updated again.

There was an error something like 0x000002 and i searched but mostly tells how to fix errors with SR

error 0x0000002 system restore win 7 - Google Search=

Help appreciated. Thanks

A:System Restore not working?

Type "Services.msc" into your search bar.

Right click Norton and select properties. Set the service to disabled, click apply and then ok.

Don't forget to re-enable Norton when you are finished with your restore.

I've not had any 'auto' restore points in the 3 months I've had PC. Guess I was supposed to configure it at time of setting up machine. Anyway . . .got into it & found what looks like a folder icon:PQSERVICE -- Protection:Off. Am I supposed to turn it on too?

A:System Restore not working

As far as I'm aware the PQService is your computer's hidden recovery partition so my thinking would be that if its off you can't use it to restore to factory settings.

I think you'll get more information via your manufacturer's support site or your computer manual.

Hello friends,

I have win xp in my C drive and win 7 in my D drive. Now I want to enable System Restore in my C drive. So when I go to My Computer in C drive, right click it, select Properties and Click on the System Restore tab, it shows that it's turned off for all my drives. So I uncheck the Turn off Sys. Restore and click on Apply then it gives me a msg box "System Restore encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more drives. Please restart your machine and try again." I restart my machine and try again several times, but it shows the same thing. Plz help.

Hello there. i'm having some trouble with my computer. i came home from a two week trip to find my computer had the "antivirus 2009" virus on it and i think it may have had a couple others as well. what was happening at first was my computer would just restart itself. then when i typed something in google the links would redirect me to an ad search site or some random site. well eventually i fixed the redirect problem (can't remember how now). so i went around many different forums and eventually read about hijackthis. so when i tried to install hijackthis it wouldn't work...i would click install>run and nothing would happen. same with spybot search and destroy, i would install but when it would try to download something it would just stop working. When i tried System restore it said "windows cannot restore to this point please choose another restore point" none of them would work. i tried creating a new system restore point but it said "cannot create a system restore point please restart your computer and try again". thats when i read something about UnHackMe. i installed and ran that program which enabled me to install hijackthis. now i have hijackthis installed but dont know anything about registry keys. so if anyone can help i would appreciate it very much.

Tried to do a system restore. But no matter which restore point I try, I keep getting " not possible to restore to this point". I thought that the restore points in the callender in bold was the date there was supposed to be a restore point...?? confused

Any help please

A:System restore ..not working

The restore points could have become corrupt due to malware, or just an accident. You can try to purge (delete) all but your oldest restore points. You should only do this if you know for a fact that everything else about your computer is working fine and you are free from all malware. Now you should Set a New Restore Point The easiest and safest way to do this is:Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore. Then go to Start > Run and type: CleanmgrClick "OK".Click the "More Options" Tab.Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Hi all

I need to restore my xp pro to an earlier date due to removing a programme in error, however when i try to
restore, it goes through the process then i get the message unable to restore to this date.
I have tried numerous dates and its the same.
Tried it it safe mode as well and still the same.
Tried to undo the last restore event and it says 'Undo Incomplete' 'SR was unable to reverse the restoration'
Done a scan with Avast and Malwarebytes and all show clean.
All my update have been done an all is up too date.
I did not try switching off SR off, as i know if i do it may remove all restore dates and then i have lost my programme
anyway.
My settings show it at 12% which is maximum (this is not where i set it originally which was 5%) so not sure how that happened.
The programme i removed in error was 'LG cyberlink power dvd' and it looks like it removed a decoder from my WMP and now i'm not able to view DVD,s in WMP that's why i need to restore (also i need SR to work).
I downloaded cyberlink from the website only to find it was an upgrade and not the player so unable to install that as its saying it cannot find powerdvd on my system

Any help will be very much appreciated

Kind Regards
Rozzer

A:System Restore not working

You could try this link. Just be aware that CNET tends to bundle other software with its downloads so choose 'Custom' or 'Manual' install. Whatever you do, don't use 'Easy', 'Quick' or 'Automatic' options and look at every screen carefully before you click 'Next' !

http://download.cnet.com/CyberLink-PowerDVD/3000-13632_4-10352449.html

Alternatively you could try the freeware VLC player, which you can get from here -

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.en_GB.html

I use the VLC player as my default for all video and music and I have yet to find a format it can't play.

Once you start a System Restore it is irreversible, you get a warning to that effect before you actually click on the 'Restore now' button, which is why you cannot undo it.
