Solved: XP computer can not find Vista computer on network, problem just started

Q: Solved: XP computer can not find Vista computer on network, problem just started

I'm baffled here. I had my network between my new vista machine (\\MAINCOMPUTER) and my xp laptop (\\JIMSLAPTOP) set up perfectly (transfered old files from xp computer to vista without problems) until yesterday when I was trying to add music files to windows media palyer on my xp machine that are stored on my vista machine. It is wireless network with the vista machine connected via ethernet and xp machine wirelessly.

It was working fine at first- searching for and adding all of the files that it should have. I left the room for a bit while the 13,000+ songs were being added and when I came back it was frozen. I canceled out of it and then tried to access the files that were added but it could not find them. I then tried to access the folder through the network and My Network Places crashed. I restarted, tried again... same... crashed.

I can see the xp laptop no problem on my vista network map, can access any of the xp files, and can ping using IP and name both ways- from vista to xp and from xp to vista. XP just won't find \\maincomputer now in My Network Places- error message says: "Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Network name is no longer available."

Norton's is running on both machines, but I have both computers on the respective "trust" lists

Again, I had this working fine and this only started happening after the windows media player incident...

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Now, I've tried following some of the instructions in the other top two posts about XP lagging (of course, I didn't remove anything using HijackThis, or manually mess with my registry), but I haven't achieved any results.

All my problems seemed to have started when I applied the newest update to Mozilla Firefox (v5.0). Saw that my Realplayer Video Recorder was incompatible with the new version of Firefox, so I downloaded the latest installation of Realplayer and installed it. Shortly thereafter, videos and firefox were slightly lagging, so I restarted my computer. First problem I hit was that it was taking much longer to start up Windows. Then once in Windows, everything became EXTREMELY Laggy, ie. everything would hang for at least a minute before it started, and whilst running, would periodically freeze up for a while, then continue on it's merry way.

So I did what anyone would do when something goes wrong with an update, I went and uninstalled both realplayer and Firefox. I then downloaded the previously known working version of Firefox, and after a re-boot, installed it once again, but to no avail. So I decided to try to get some expert advice before I give up and reinstall my Windows XP.

I was initially planning on finding a HijackThis forum (hence it showing up on some of my reports), when I found this site listed as a recommended forum from TrendMicro, so I figured that this would be the most knowledgeable place I could go to in order to seek h... Read more

I have several computers where I work. They are all running WinXP Pro. I turned an old computer into a shared documents computer. I want the other computers to be mapped to this one so that we can have access to common files.
The problem is that there are three computers that will not see any of the computers in the Microsoft Windows Network Office group. All the other computers can find it okay. Why can't the other ones?
For information, the three computers that cannot see the Office group are:
- one about 5 years old
- the second one about two years old
- the third one is two weeks old

All are Dell computers.

Thanks for the help.

I have 2 desktop computers at home (both Dell, Windows XP), and they WERE networking just fine. I reformatted the second one (went perfectly), but when I tried to reconnect the network, I got a message saying it couldn't find the network hardware. ?! I used the original CDs that came with the computer. I see that under "device drivers" there are some yellow question marks next to some items--I'm guessing there shouldn't be. But I don't know what those items are, and why they wouldn't be on the original disks. Can anyone clue me in? Thanks.

A:Solved: Computer can't find network hardware

Go to Dell's website and download the correct device drivers for your specific machine. I would burn them on CD for later use also. But most likely that is the cause of your problem.

I currentlly have 3 computers on a home network. My main computer (vista) connects to netgear router/modem dg834gv3, I then have a laptop (xp) which connects wirelessly and I have another computer upstairs (xp)which connects via netcomm homeplugs.

As the upstairs computer was fairly old I decided to reformat it and clean it up. After a few weeks I lost the network/internet connection on this computer. I have checked the homeplugs are working (via the laptop) and cannot find where the problem is and why it wont connect (sadly I am a bit of a novice).

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I might be able to try?

Thanks heaps

Hi All - I was trying to help a friend with a Toshiba L25-S119 laptop running Windows XP. She has an Atheros wireless device in the computer and she accidentally deleted her wireless LAN in Network Connections.

Rebooting / and having Device Mgr Scan for changes brought up the various dialog boxes but none found and reinstalled the driver. It doesn't show in device mgr and didn't at any time after any of these attempts.

I downloaded the driver from toshiba - even though the specs on the Toshiba sight list the Atheros wifi card, the driver was Intel. i figured they know what they're doing but when it was run on friends computer it said could not find hardware and though I click proceed anyway - nothing more shows up on screen from it. Next I pointed the add new hdwe dialog to C:/windows/system32/drivers but it also did not complete an installation.

I have her running sfc now but it seems extreme for the situation. Anyone experience anything similar or have any advice. I would be grateful.

Thank in Advance

I was listening to iTunes and surfing the Internet like I've done a thousand times before. Suddenly my iTunes music started lagging and the Internet got really slow, out of nowhere. I turned my computer off and on and uninstalled chrome as I thought the problem might have something to do with the web browser. If anything, I think it got worse! My computer is so slow that I had to turn it off before I threw the whole thing in the wall out of frustration!

I am not technical at all and I have no idea what the problem might be. I didn't get any messages from my virus protector that it was a virus but I noticed that when I pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL the processes were running at 100% the whole time which I assume isn't good.

Any help would be highly appreciated! And I'm also sorry of this is in the wrong forum as I have no idea what's wrong.

hi there,

I have a bit of a problem.

I have been running my Dell laptop for 3 years I think and have always run Sony Sonicstage for my music. Last week it stopped working all of a sudden for any reason....said something was missing on C Drive (can't remember what). I tried to restore computer to an earlier restore point but it keeps saying that there is a C Disc Error and won't allow a restore. Also, it sayes to reboot and it will run a scan but this scan never runs. So, I deleted Sonic Stage and reinstalled and now it won't run saying database is being used by another program. Error Code: 00005e27. Finally, my printer isn't being recognised now either. I don't know much about Windows or Hard Drives but I'm guessing something has been corrupted or lost not allowing these programs to start?!?!? but that is a very amateur guess!

I have tried to reboot and restore in Safe Mode but I can't seem to work out how to get into safe mode.

I just want to listen to my music again!! But I fear the problem is much more than my music program not working

Any help much appreciated!

I am trying to create a folder on our network printer to save scans to. The printer is Ricoh Aficio MP C2500. Computer system info below.

I have walked through the setup process with the printer company, to no avail. The printer is unable to ping my computer, but can ping other computers on the network. I have shared folders available on the network, but when I try to access one of them from another computer, it denies access. The public folder is accessible. I have tried disabling the firewall to allow the printer to see the computer.

When I view the network computers from my computer, my computers name shows up twice. Once like this: EXITFRONTDESK and once like this: EXIT-FRONT-DESK. The printer is able to connect to EXIT-FRONT-DESK without any issue, except that the folders I share are under EXITFRONTDESK.

I am pulling my hair out trying to solve this problem, any help would be much appreciated.

I am having issues attaching computers to my network with different operating systems. I have spent the last 4 hours doing nothing but reading stuff off the internet and am just not getting this fixed. I have read through many threads and I apologize up front, I am just not getting this. The threads
that I have read had their router attached to Windows 7 computer and then trying to attach an XP
computer to their network, mine is the opposite and am I not sure what difference this would make.

I have a desktop that is running XP and my wireless router is hooked to this. I have a laptop
that is running XP and that hooks up to the internet just fine. I added another laptop that is
running Windows 7 and when I click on the list of available wireless connections mine does not
show. I did internet searches and the only thing that I could find is that on the computer that is
hooked to the router you have to turn on file and printer sharing. Nothing happens.

I just don't understand why the XP computers attach fine but the Windows 7 ones don't. There has to be a setting that I have not turned on properly. That Windows Network Diagnostic tool is really useless, it alway says no issues found but to check online for solution which has led me here. There is a long list of available networks but mine never shows.

I recently had one of my networked computers reformatted because the OS crashed. I do not wish for a network advisor to come and try to fix it. This seems like a small problem to me and I do not wish to waste money on a problem I can get help with (without paying 85 per hour).

So everything back to normal. My wireless internet access and my programs to run business again. However, the network cannot find my computer nor can they send print jobs to the computer. I can see other computers connected on the network but the other computers dont see me. So my question is: How can I configure it to where it will recognize the computer on the wirless network?

Also, I've read that the printer can have its own IP address and can do print jobs without having the computer on. How can I do that as well. Any help would be appreciated. The sooner the better hehe. I haven't sent my credit card summaries for a week and a half now.

I have a small office with 6 networked computers and a network printer. As of this morning we got an internet service upgrade (Uverse) and changed from a router to a switch. Everything seems to work fine...

However, one of the computers on the network can no longer see the network printer. This computer connects to the internet and other computers on the network just fine but the printer is invisible. All other computers connect to the printer without issue.

4 of the computers are XP, 2 are Win 7. The computer with the printer connection problem is XP but it doesn't seem like that should be a factor. I have tried the printer troubleshooting and uninstalling and reinstalling the printer driver. The printer is invisible to this one computer.

All of this makes no sense to me. Any ideas what to look for?

Good day,

I have an Epson 310 printer which I cannot find with my wife's win7 64 computer. My network looks like this:

Printer found here: Modem->Asus RT-AC68W Router->USB 2.0 Printer
Wife's computer found here: Modem->Asus RT-AC68W Router->TP Link TL-SG108 switch->Wife's computer

My computer finds the printer just fine, it is located here:
Modem->Asus RT-AC68W Router->My computer via cat6

My computer automatically detected the printer via the devices and printers utility in windows. My wife's computer couldn't find it. When I tried to manually find it, I got asked a bunch of questions somebody that knows something about networks needs to answer. I am not interested in hooking up to the printer via wireless, wired only.

Any ideas? If so, please don't ask me to give you an IP address or subnet mask or some other networking jargon without telling me how to do it as well since I am an end user, not a network specialist .

I had tried to change my Wifi 5G network name on my Arris TG1682G from something like BGHT1465F3F8-5G to something simple like Aces5G. Once I did that the 5G network was gone from my list of networks and it could only see the 2.4GHz. Other devices such as my cell phone and Xbox One could find it though. When I looked around for a solution I came across some information telling me that my wifi adapter, Realtek RTL8188EE 802.11 bgn Wi-Fi Adapter, did not support 5GHz. I now understand why that is but it was confusing since I was already using the 5G network before I changed it. Please Help.

A:My computer can't find my 5G network anymore

Hi: The  Realtek RTL8188EE 802.11 bgn Wi-Fi Adapter definitely does not work on the 5.0 GHz band. That card is a single band card that only works on the 2.4 GHz band. Anytime you see a wifi N card with a suffix that ends in b/g/n, that means it is a single band card. Dual band wifi N cards have suffixes that end in a/b/g/n or a/g/n.

I've set up my wireless router for my Cable modem so that I can use the internet on my laptop without being near my desktop.

To my amazement, which I just found out because I've never had both computers on at the same time, I can also share files over the wireless link.

The tricky bit is, I can see my desktop in My network places on my laptop, but I cannot see my laptop on My netowrk places on my desktop.

What are the steps to get this to work?

A:Cant find computer in my network places

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

There is an insurance agency in this small town of 600, they have a computer guy that takes care of there stuff he went on vacation and they are down. They asked me for help since i have worked on computers before. I don't kn ow alot but they know I no some so they begged me to help. Here is the basic problem

All they have is router to patch panel to firewall to modem DSL

I checked the telephone box outside the office hooked my laptop up and there is internet there, inside I bypassed everything and plugged my laptop into the modem and got on the interner there so we have internet to there equipment. Heres the problem supposedly nothing has been changed. On their computers I can get the ip address, subnet mask and gateway and it says it is sending and recieving. ipconfig shows also ip, subnet, gateway, but it is always page cannot be displayed for internet, the last time I tried one of there computers about 1/2 hour ago it went to low or no connection but before that I had everything but could not get internet, I released and renew the ip, recycled modem and rebooted computers, I guess I need to no If I can get the internet by bypassing there equipment except for there modem and get internet and it shows they are getting ips, subnet, and gateways, and says it is sending and recieveng doesn't it have to be something with there equipment or a cable ? Please help for what to try next, they have 5 emplyees waiting to get on their computers , I am lost

Hello everyone. It has to have been over a year since I came here looking for help because I rarely have problems that are like this. My computer is freezing while playing games (low-end ones at that!). And sorry in advance for killing dial up users with my huge post!

Ok so here's the simple form of it:
1. I've checked for Malware of any kind first: none. Spybot search and destroy, ad-aware, and I use ccleaner(I recomend this program as an experienced PC user) for general stuff.
2. I disabled all uneeded applications(shouldn't have mattered, but still...) before running any games. Left only my wireless software and sound driver program.
3. I downloaded a temperature monitor for my hardware that acessed the built in stuff: all seems good as far as I can find the info for. My main concern was the CPU, that's clear for sure at 50dC.
4. I updated Windows with everything they had; minus the useless stuff, eg: sim card reader and Windows media player(<3 Winamp Pro.)
5. I updated my video card driver and installed Catylyst, which was my main reason for updating Windows(for .net framework updates).

Stuff I already tried to do:
1. Reinstall the below listed games that I've been using and/or testing my fixes with.
2. Notice a degredation issue with continued gameplay: nope. The amount of time before freezing seems to be random as it has been after 2 seconds once, and other times after a half hour or more(or sometime to my pleasure, not at all .)
3. Update... Read more

In my office we have several computers and 2 shared printers as well as a shared MyDuo drive where we store our database, all of this (other than printers) is connected on one router via hard wire. My 3 computers are all win 10 and connected to the router through a connector box. Two of the 3 computers have no issue seeing the rest of the network. The computer I had to wipe and fresh install everything is also hard wired but for some reason ended up on a different network and doesn't even see the other computers on the network, more importantly it doesn't see the MyDuo so it cannot access the database. First off, how can I get it off "Network 2" and back on "Network" like the other computers? Secondly, how does this even happen? Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

I work as a Network Engineer ,I want to find out the list of computers which are connected to Internet ( my job is to create list of computers connected to Internet for intalling updates)

I cannot use any software for this because my company will not agree to purchase software and I dont want to use unlicensed software.

All the machines and server run on windows and I want to prepare a code in Java or C ,if its possible using window commands its still good.

Note: I think my requirements are now clear to moderators.

Hello, I recently caught a virus on my pc. Microsoft Security Essentials labels it as Trojan:WIN32/Sirefef.AB. It claims to have removed the Trojan and it no longer detects it during a scan, but my computer randomly shuts down now with no warning. If I enter safe mode it will shut down VERY fast. I'm using Windows XP home edition. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I'm not very computer savvy, but I can follow directions pretty well. Thanks.

MY computer is a acer aspire 5520 and i cannot find the web cam driver for it and it is running windows vista home premium how can i find the web cam driver for the acer crystal eye web cam?

A:My computer cannot find the web cam driver for windows vista

Have you downloaded the drivers from the Acer website?

Here's the drivers: http://support.acer.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=57
At the top right hand side choose the correct 32 bit or 64 bit version of Vista to have only those drivers listed.

They list 3 difference models, I'd try each driver until you find the correct one.

Hi, I love this site and you guys have helped me so much, so first of all, thank you!

Now the bad news.... I got the WIndows Vista Repair virus about a month ago on my Acer PC. At first, it ran all of those warning messages and then it shut down the computer and reloaded as what appeared to be a completely wiped computer. The only icon on the desktop was the Windows Vista Repair. I tried to find programs by searching for a few minutes before trying to shut down (which the virus had also made me incapable of doing), and resorting to popping out the battery to shut it down. I restarted in safe mode with networking and tried to get on this site, but even in safe mode my browser was auto-redirecting me to sales sites. By following instructions for removal on this site, and downloading programs onto a flash drive from a different computer, I was able to get my computer in working order again, although it would still, at times, randomly shut down my internet browser (and the process and amount of time I spent getting it just to that state of operation was ridiculous, much worse than any virus I've EVER had...I can explain what all happened and the steps I took if necessary). A couple of weeks later, I left my computer on while I went to a friend's house for the night, and when I came back in the morning I couldn't get it to unfreeze. I shut it down and for the next two days, every time I tried to turn it on it would just run on a loop, booting up part of the way bu... Read more

My computer is running very slowly. Applications take a very long time to open. Browsing the web is just painful. I've done everything I can think of. Since I'm not sure of exactly what's going on it's hard to tell if I'm duplicating someone else's question. If I am please direct me to the right thread. Here's my most recent HJT log. As of about five minutes ago I wasn't able to get LiveUpdate to run. I kept getting a message saying that it was running elsewhere. Thanks in advance.
