Preferred Solution: Computer Starts With Windows XP Then Goes Blank With White Dash

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an Hp pavilion a1226n desktop computer and shut off the power this morning during a bad storm. I used the regular procedures and shut it down correctly, but when i tried to boot it up earlier this morning, the only thing that comes up is a blank black screen with a flashing white dash in the upper left hand corner. I have already tried to remove reset the BIOS by removing the battery and then later restarting, but it did not help at all. Also, it wont even boot far enough for me to start in safe/real mode. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the help

Hi sherm12789 and welcome to TSF

Start up your computer by either tapping the F1, F2, F4, F6, F8, F10, F11, F12, or Delete keys to access the systems BIOS. For the exact information on what key to start up the System BIOS refer back to Original Manufacturer System Documentation.

After getting into the BIOS, look for a page that would have something like, eg. PC Health Screen or System Monitoring Page. When you have found a page similar to this post back what the BIOS says for your temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds.

Hello. I have a compaq mini that was infected with the pallidium virus. After following the instructions for removal using RKill computer rebooted and now it only starts with a black screen with a flashing dash. I cannot access anything at all. I took out the battery, still nothing. I thought I would reinstall Windows XP Pro but I get the error message that it did not find hard disk drives? Any ideas.

Thank you.

I got my Radeon 6570 today and I installed it, but now Windows won't boot it just gives me the blinking white dash. So I removed the card, switched back to onboard from BIOS and it still didn't work. I tried a lot of other stuff but it didn't work so I reinstalled Windows with the graphics card removed (Hoping it would reinstall the drivers for the onboard video) it didn't. So then I tried booting from an old Linux disc I found and it worked (how I am typing) but Windows still won't. Any help? I ran a diagnostics text and everything is working, and I can even access all my personal files on my old Windows install from Linux so I know that it's active.

Hey guys, here I am again with another failure.
Today morning I woke up to my windows refusing to boot. It just does the white dash blinking in the top left corner (it jumps down a bit at first, then just keeps blinking endlessly). I'm aware that this can be a result of a poor shutdown or a crash or modified system files or program installation, or whatever. The thing is last night I was using the computer fine and I didn't install anything, modify anything, and it shut down correctly (as far as I know - after I clicked shut down I shut off the monitors and went somewhere else, and just when I came back it turned off so I assume it was fine).

I've tried a number of things already. First, I'm booting from an Ubuntu CD right now and my files are all fine and intact on the C:\ drive. Second, I tried running my Windows 7 CD to go into the recovery system and tried a bunch of things.

The recovery thing doesn't detect my operating system, first of all, but I've had this issue before. I remember that I got it to work somehow, but I don't remember how. I think it might have been a disc that I burned with a modification that allowed it to detect the system (I used some tutorials over at sevenforums.com, can't remember which ones now though). I'll look for the CD, I might have it somewhere.
EDIT: I found what I presume is the CD but it doesn't even want to boot. I'll try looking for whatever I found before and make another one, I guess. But if I could get it to det... Read more

A:Help - Windows won't boot, white dash blinking endlessly.

From what you have written, this should be impossible but I suggest you to press F8 right before booting into windows, and select 'Use last known good config'.
This issue sound really hopeless, but if you could manage to boot into any windows which is on another partition (if you have any), you could rebuild the MBR manually (master boot record) which stores the OS information.
Do you have another disk/partition?
If yes, the best would be to install W7 on it (takes 20mins) do the above things (I will explain it further if you have another partition) and then boot back into your original OS and would be able to delete the 'blank' windows 7 installation files from the orher partition.

Hello, I am trying to install Windows XP (because Windows 7 is damn slow) Corporate Edition 64-bit but after the Copying Windows Files setup portion, the setup wants to restart my computer, but after the motherboard logo, I just get the blacnk screen with white dash - if CD is inserted I get "Press any key to boot from CD....." and a white dash at the end with nothing happening. I've searched for a solution everywhere, but I didn't find my case. I have installed XP atleas 20 times on this computer, and I've never had such problem before. I thought it could be because of the 64-bit version, but after trying to install the 32-bit version I have got the same issue, which has never happened before. Windows 7 installs perfectly. I have: removed the CD from the drive; Updated the BIOS to the last version; Tried running in safe mode and nothing helped. My computer specs are: Processor: Intel Pentium DualCore @ 2.80 GHz, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, 650GB HDD SATA2, ATI HD 4770 512MB DDR5 Graphics Card, American Megatrends Inc. 0502 BIOS. I hope there's somebody out there to help me because I really want XP.

A:Black screen with white dash after first portion of Windows Setup?

Seems that Windows XP installation is not detecting or having problems with your SATA2 drive.

Try going to BIOS and Switching the SATA2 drive out of RAID mode if possible see if that helps.

Windows Xp has issues with SATA2 Drives.

Or you may need to slipstream your copy of Xp with sp2 or 3 if your cd is only SP1 for it to recognize and work with SATA drives. Also with SATA drives I believe Windows XP only recognizes 128GB 137GB SATA drives.

When I start my laptop it display the Hp screen as usual but after that instead of booting it display a blank screen with white cursor blinking at the top LEFT corner, the fan is working like... after 3 minutes of waiting the Windows 7 logo appears and Windows Starts. I thought the problem might be that the bootloader got corrupted or something, so I tried booting with Windows 7 CD both but no change still same blank screen with white blinking cursor But Now it gives me Operating System not Found after 3 Minutes Windows Starts Normally. Please note that I have been able to enter Bios setup and change the booting option as well. Bios was showing all the hardware as it usually shows. I Tried to change the HardDisK But the Problem Remained.
When I try to Press F11 recovery button it performs same thing, blank screen with blinking cursor.
I Also Tried to Format but because when i boot it doesnt take the cd and remain with the blank screen with blinking cursor. After Window Started I Entered and run the setup.exe and installed Windows again but the problem was not solved !!!

I have been having problems with my Dell Dimension 5000 since this morning, basically I switch it on and all I get is a blank blank screen with a white dash blinking in the top left corner.

I can't access safe mode or bios settings using the function keys and I can't get further then this blank black creen with flashing dash.

I have taken out my gfx card and cleaned the dust out of the fan, checked all the cable connections inside and out. I also checked other posts for solutions but could not find any that related to mine as I can't access anything. I have also checked the Dell Diagnostic lights which indicate:

Other failure has occurred.
Ensure that the cables are properly connected to the system board from the hard drive, CD drive, and DVD drive.
Check the computer message that appears on your monitor screen.
If the problem persists, contact Dell.

Dell don't seem helpful as the computer is out of warrenty and I even get passed around or hung up on. Only thing I can think of is that my hard drive might of gone as it makes a reading noise about five times then I hear nothing even though I replaced the HD about two months ago.

Sorry for the essay, hope I can sort it out!!

It looks somewhat like a stuck/dead pixel case. As possible solutions, I have tried the following : i. Battery Drain for 30 mins, and re-checkii. Disable/Enable the Graphic Card Provided that there are no easy solutions, I wish to know whether the replacement of screen of my product (which is still under warranty) will be covered or not? Regards,B.

Hi! Sorry for opening a new thread but this is just so serious and I am so stressed out about it that I didn't have the patience to search if the thread is already open.
I have a black screen and white blinking dash problem. The thing is, I can't even type f2 or f4, or anything whatsoever. It is not reacting at all to the keyboard. It's the second time this is happening in 2 days, every time I turn it off (properly) and try to turn it on, it does that. After a lot of hopeless trying to turn it on or make f2 or f4 work, it just starts working again normally... And now I finally turned it on after I spent the whole morning trying and I'm working on saving all my files, but now I'm scared to turn it off. What do I do?? What is wrong with my computer?

Hi everybody,
First of all, sorry about my English.
Few days ago, I was working on my laptop (ASUS X5DI) and when I decide shuting down, I realize that needs to intall updates. I let him to shut down by itself and do it fine without any problems.
Next day, when I turn on the computer again, the show me this (its spanish but i think you'll know what screen is):

I thought then, that something in the update process went wrong, so I try to fix it. First, I tried it by click on the "Repair Startup" option in that image menu. A message box that wants to select a keyboard language appeared but after that and some comprobations of the process, It said to me with an alert box that it couldn't be possible:

Then..  this other screen appeared:

I click on the options, even in the prompt option, and tried to fix it with bootrec commands like /fixboot or /fixmbr but nothing fix the problem.
So... What I decided? the solution that "never fail" ... format all my pc again and get a "new" computer hahaha..
I get into the BIOS and change the boot order to start from CD/DVD. Save changes, introduce the Windows 7 disc and restart.
I realized that my computer cant start from cd/dvd because that white blinking cursor appears on the top left of the screen.
I tried with different CD/DVD even Ubuntu CD and always the blink cursor appears. So... if I use HDD boot in BIOS appears the screen on the top... Read more

My computer, which was running windows 10 without much issue, is now completely unusable for reasons beyond my comprehension. After bios messages I now only have a blinking white dash on a black screen.

I have tried various repairs, with the windows recovery usb. All automatic repairs fail due to the disk "being locked", so i have tried a few guides which involved bcdboot commands which have failed to fix anything. One command was bcdboot g: which gave an error like failed copying boot files (i forget the exact wording) .

Could some kind soul point me towards a fix, im tearing my hair out! Many thanks!

I typed Y for yes and still,
That boot missing chkdsk thingy still pops up)

Checked the BIOS which I googled again for its meaning.(and yes, it is in order)
But never worked.

Thats apart of the operating system, is not an error so there is nothing to fix.

If your machine is not booting and stuck at the "flashing dash" you may need to do a system repair.

I have the same problem. When turning on the laptop screen goes to white, I can hear windows starting but cannot see anything. I connected it to an external monitor, which will only display once windows has loaded. I then took the whole laptop apart and discovered the LCD cable was frayed due to a faulty laptop hinge. I replaced the cable and it was the same, just white. The problem I think is with the motherboard and the intergrated video card. Upon taking the whole thing apart I noticed that where the video card plugs in is right where the heat sink is and the cooling fan which gets exceptional hot. I figure it has fried the board to the extend the monitor will not work where it is plugged in, but the external monitor will work but only when windows boots. So sad to say because of the the heat this laptop puts off and if you have it sitting on your lap or bed or anywhere else that it cannot cool properly it has over heated and you will have to get a new motherboard.

"I connected it to an external monitor, which will only display once windows has loaded"... This is normal behavior because the video signal to the external monitor is not sent until Windows loads. If you can see normal video, the motherboard video chip is good

HP Envy 34" All in One, model 1039801

16 gig Memory
No optical drive
4x USB 3.0, 3x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI out, 1x Combination Microphone / Headphone Jack, 1x Media Card Reader

I woke up yesterday and my 6 month old computer boots to a blank, black screen. No windows logo at startup. I can hear the fan whirring when I start, but then nothing else. I know I can't fix permanently, this but I am desperately hoping I can get it functional enough to pull information off of the 2tb drive. Methods I've already tried to fix this:

shutting down, unplugging for hours, then plugging back in
hitting escape repeatedly while booting
hitting F10, F5 repeatedly while booting
restarting, holding down power button then rebooting
holding down Windows+B while booting
16 short beeps while using the Windows+B method-nothing else worked

HP has agreed to fully refund my purchase, but I cannot open the PC without voiding the warranty (and losing the $2,000 refund). Is there any way to connect to a functional computer long enough to pull off some information? Is there a method I haven't tried? Is a miracle possible?

Thanks in advance!

Hello to the readers out there

I am having a problem with my computer. I dont know if any one can offer there support to this problem, or there could be some one out there that has experienced the same problem.

Here is the problem. My computer screen, seems to go blank, being all white screen. It seems to happen, when you do stuff on your computer. like clicking on icons to bring up the internet, also yahoo mail etc. To get rid of the white screen I need to click on to the desktop icon to make the white screen go away. You think it has gone, but it is still there, when you do the same thing clicking onto icons it seems to keep on going blank white screen. It gets annoying clicking on the desktop icon all the time.

Some days the white screen may not come up.

Would any one please, provide info about this problem I have.

Thank you for reading.

If this issue started occurring after doing some recent software changes on your computer, then I would suggest you to restore your system back to a date when it was working fine. System Restore will affect Windows system files, programs, and registry settings only.

For System Restore steps, you can refer to the URL mentioned: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/system-restore

If the issue still persists, try running Hardware Diagnostics on the computer.

It's my first post, so please be nice...

I was working on my computer when everything froze for several minutes, so I tried Alt+Ctrl+Del, but to no avail. I restarted the computer by doing a force shut down by holding down the power button. When I restarted the computer, after the windows logo graphic, the screen turns black/blank and the HDD activity stops (led indicator).

I started Windows in Safe mode and tried various recovery points, none of which fix the problem. I tried doing a virus scan with Norton, but SOMEHOW it does not do a search but tells me complete immediately. I did to a scan about 2 days ago and everything was cleaned up. I search through my HD and I can access anything I want in safe mode. When I did a S.M.A.R.T. test for the HD, everything came up normal.

I am out of ideas!! What could be wrong with my computer?? How can I fix this? How is it possible for it to boot in safe mode but not regularly?

So I have a dell dimension/Windows XP, a ge force graphics card that goes in the pci slot, I don't have AGP...So the problem I am having is, I put the new graphics card in awhile ago and it was competing with the onboard video I believe which caused it to go blank after the windows started........So everything loads up find it shows windows then the monitor just turns off after it says windows xp....So somehow I fixed it about a year ago and it's worked fine ever since, but I recently had to move my computer, So i moved it and now it does that same thing again....I don't remember how to fix it.....I tried to get into safe mode, but i think i turned off the computer too many times while it's loading and now safemode just starts to load a bunch of sentences that say partition in it and just gets stuck and won't load safe mode...So I can't turn it off that way....I tried to go to bios and it has a video controller option that only has auto and onboard, it doesn't have a turn off onboard monitor option....So I am lost, I tried calling dell, but my "Technical Support warranty" is up so I can't get help there....So I am lost on what to do.....So if anyone can help I would really appretiate it, Sorry for the long post, just wanted to make everything clear I hope......

A:Montior Goes Blank After Windows Starts.......

your question was a little confusing but i got your problem. You know most Bios have an option of selecting graphics. If you have selected auto for initial display option in Bios setup then you should know that the bios first scans for AGP card and then for PCI then goes for your onboard graphics card. So, if you graphics card(PCI) then probably BIOS will scan for your graphics card first and will turn off your onboard card. Now about your problem, since you can see windows starting up logo then your graphics card is ok but i think your graphics card drivers might have been corrupted since you have moved your system it might have happened. So, what you do is try to boot your system in VGA mode(select VGA Mode from start up options) and tell me what happens and if the computer boots up tell me do your system shows your graphics card in your device manager(right click my computer select hardware tab and then click device manager button and then display adapter. I know I am not alone with this problem, but haven't been able to find a solution online - last encountered it some months back, but today it is back again. Folders 'show' as white squares (invisible) and many files lose their default icons and go blank as well. It's not just the icon picture - a whole batch of bmp files have been affected: if I right-click on them and choose Properties, the information tells me they are 1x1 pixel (they are not), or on others I am told that the bmp file is a folder containing 100s of MBs of files. (Wrong!).

Clearly Explorer has had (another) nervous breakdown. This occurred today as I was working as usual - no new programmes or alterations to the system. Last time a System restore fixed it, but has anyone sorted out what the problem is here?

System restore didn't help this time - same thing. Even worse, my bmp files are being destroyed as I open the folder. For a split second they show as they should when I open the containing folder, then they go white and register as 1kb in size. If I choose to overwrite the folder with a backed up copy, without opening it, the replace files dialogue shows all files as being their original size however (i.e - no instance of do I want to overwrite the 'corrupt' 1kb file with the proper 2MB file, or whatever. The sizes and dates of the files show as being all the same.

A:Windows and Icons white/blank

.. and now I can't undo the Restore as System restore no longer shows any option to undo it. Beginning to get really fed up with this!

Hi all,

Probably a stupid question. I have a PC running Windows 2000 Pro. Yesterday at startup it goes as far as the login screen. I can log in OK, but then all I get is a blank white screen with nothing but a mouse. I'm not a cat, so this is no good to me.

I can get to the usual Task Manager by Ctrl+Alt+Del; I see no applications open, plenty of processes running.

I know slightly less than nothing about computers, but I recall seeing explorer.exe running all the time. Is this what's missing?

Any help would be appreciated.

I have a HP dv9700t laptop, and I noticed yesterday that while playing certain games the display would suddenly spazz and turn really staticy, usually mostly in one color. After that, I installed the newest driver from nVidia's website (HP hasn't updated the driver for a really long time), which made it almost unusable in all situations. Since apparently I didn't have enough hard drive space or something, there wasn't a Windows Restore point I could use. So I installed an older driver, but after that the screen is completely blank.
The screen distinctly lights up at bootup, but the BIOS doesn't show, but I can still hear Windows booting up in the background, log on, and start random programs. The screen stays blank. I can hear the hard drive, etc.
I'm suspecting the graphics card, but I don't know for sure. It doesn't seem like a driver issue would cause this problem, but it happened right after I installed the driver. Maybe the card was about to give anyways?
Nothing happened when I tried an external monitor.
Anyways, your help would be much appreciated.

Hello! Thanks so much for taking the time to read my thread.
I've run into a bit of trouble with my HP pavillion dm4-1065dx laptop (Windows 7 x64) in the past few days. I have a variety of symptoms that lead me to believe I could be infected with something, possibly failed ransomware. My main issue of concern is that, when I log in, I get a blank white screen with pointer only following the "welcome" screen.
Including this, here's a breakdown of some of the problems I've been facing:
- blank white screen with pointer only, after logging in / following the "welcome" screen (however, if I wait over 2 minutes or so, the desktop WILL eventually load and be usable)
- inconsistency with being able to boot windows normally (sometimes it works, but sometimes it never makes it to the login screen at all - working for now)
- inability to boot into safe mode (hangs at classpnp.sys - note: I usually CAN boot into safe mode with command prompt)
- general slowness, especially upon startup
- "could not reconnect all network drives" bubble pops up often
As for tests I've run and things I've tried thus far:
- malwarebytes (most notable discoveries were hijack.startmenu, conduit)
- hitmanpro (just chrome tracking cookies)
- tdsskiller (OK)
- roguekiller (various PUM HJ DESKs found in registry)
- adwcleaner (didn't help)
- farbar recovery scan tool (I've only run it in recovery mode, and while I did get the log, it caused computer t... Read more

I am a new member. Here is my first XP issue. I have been running XP Pro now for a year with no issues. This week I decide to purchase and install a new hot game Half-Life 2. I seemed to have no problems installing the game (all 5 CDs worth). I shut down my PC. The next day when I turned my PC on I got about 30 seconds of blank screen followed by a white progress bar accross the lower portion of my screen.

My PC is a Dell Inspiron 5150. It takes about 120 seconds before the
progress bar moves across from left to right then windows starts OK.

I decided to reinstall windows XP pro yesterday as an update. This done
I rebooted but the problem is still there.

Prior to this problem, my PC booted completely in about 15 or 20 seconds.

have you tried booting in safemode hit F8 while booting
then have a look see if there are any yellow triangels in device manager
maybe de-install the game

see what happens

have you searched the game forum - sometimes theres some q&A on that site with game problems

I am using GP user preferences to create shortcuts on my users' desktops. On all my Vista/Win7 machines they are fine and the icons are what I set them to be. on all my Win8 machines the icon is just a blank white square. If I right-click and view the icon,
the correct image appears. But when the user is looking at the desktop the image is blank.

I have upgraded a couple machines, scratch built one, and purchased an OEM version on a new laptop. All are the same: blank shortcut icons.

Surely I'm not the only person testing Win8 in a domain environment, right?

Hi, the Internet Explorer icon just dissappeared from the windows bar on the bottom of the screen. Instead, a white blank icon replaced it. How can I get the normal icon back? Thanks for your feedback.

A:windows internet explorer icon dissappeared, replaced by white blank

Hello bakelite, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If the IE shortcut still works, then you might see if rebuilding the icon cache may help.

If not on both, then you could see if unpinning the icon, then pinning the iexplore.exe file below to your taskbar to recreate it may show better.

Upon a reboot last night, I got a blank white screen. Could still hear Windows 7 starting up, so I entered my password and it went to windows. CTR+ALT+DEL x 2 to turn off. Tried turning on again with same results and held power button to force turn off. Plugged it into an external monitor, which shows my OS working as normal, but laptop screen is still blank white (though I can still change brightness/dimness). Writing this post off of the same computer, just an external screen.

Dell support says my LCD has tanked (purchased 1/1/10). Problem is that I'm not working in Bolivia (South America) so shipping to a repair center in the U.S. is not an option.

I have searched through a lot of threads and couldn't find any with this specific problem. Yesterday when I got up I turned on my computer. I have a Compaq Desktop with an Intel Celeron D processor and Vista Home Basic with 2 gigs of Ram and a LCD monitor. When I turned on the monitor the screen started flashing white, so I immediately shut the computer off. When I turned it back on the screen was still white but it had the warning saying that I may have had recently installed hardware and it failed. So it optioned me to go into repair mode, which I did. Repair mode gave me the option of using System Restore and I used that. The computer rebooted fine. When the PC was done with system restore I got a error message from Norton Anti-Virus error number 3035,2. My anti virus was turned off and I was prompted to do some hot fix. Which wouldn't download when I tried it so later in the day I found the Norton webpage and downloaded the Hotfix and it has worked fine. Norton Antivirus also had to be turned back on and updated and it all worked fine. I ran diagnostics, defragmented and anti-virus checks everything and it all says everything is working fine.

Now I am oddball in the fact that I turn off my computer when I am not using it. So I turned off the computer and few hours later I turned it on again and there was no white screen. So I had to go out for most of the day and when I got back I turned it on and had the white screen again. So I turned it off and then back on ... Read more

I have a dell pc with windows 7. The computer loads the dell logo, the screen is black with the blinking line in the corner. I have tried all solutions that I have come across, the fixboot, replacing config files and last resort, I did a fresh install of windows. After the fresh install of windows, it worked for a few days and now it is doing it again. What is my next option?

Hello Nicole and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you've already done a reinstall of Windows 7 and the problem has returned, I think I'd start looking at hardware issues. Perhaps a hard drive, RAM, motherboard, etc that's failing. One of the Forum experts has prepared a couple of troubleshooting guides that might help isolate the problem. I might start with the Memtest86 and HD Diagnostics test outlined in Steps 8 and 9, first tutorial.
