Text editors can't access the system drive

Q: Text editors can't access the system drive

I have a strange problem with the text editors. ConText and Eclipse are not allowed to read and write on the system drive. I get ""Drive not accessable: Access is denied message " I tried to run as administrator and reinstall. Word Wordpad and Notepad++ don't have this problem Yesterday I ran a virus scan and updated my firewall. Windows 7 Ultimate x32.

Preferred Solution: Text editors can't access the system drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The easiest way to fix this is to do a system restore. This should fix the problem.

Are there any text editors that can be put on my website to enable my customers to type their own text? The catch is that I need the alignment "Justify", not just left or center. It is to justify their own text in a text box on a card that they are designing. Is there such a thing?

I want them to see a preview of their text as it would print. I really need full justification and interactive on my site.

Any suggestions?

Issue: All Chinese characters I try to view in text editors are being displayed as squares.

I can view the file in a browser (Chrome) and the Chinese characters appear correctly, but in text editors they are squares.

Background: I recently installed Windows 7 Service Pack 1 along with many other updates. I had not been installing any updates (yeah I know) but I wanted to be able to edit files with Chinese characters in them, so I installed all the available updates.

After I restarted the first time, I was delighted to see that the characters which were squares before were now legible Chinese characters. However, when I restarted again, the characters were back to squares.

I checked for updates and saw a few optional updates were available. I installed them, restarted, and the characters were back to being legible. I restarted again and the characters returned to being squares.

Now there are no available updates and the characters still display as squares. This happens no matter what text editor I use, be it Notepad++, Sublime Text, or plain old Notepad. The file is encoded with UTF-8 (it's been that way during both when I could see the characters and when I couldn't). It also happens no matter what font I use.

How can I fix this issue?

I am not an expert in this area. I am simply sharing my experience to help other users who may be experiencing the same thing.I saw a recommendation for Lazarus Form Recovery Add-on for FF (I use FF 10). The current release through FF is 2.3, but there is a new release v3.0.5 on their website. In addition, the new version is available for Chrome and Safari, and all three can be downloaded directly from Interclue. Honestly, if you're not having trouble or not using services like Gmail, and/or you have trouble losing data due to server problems, connection disruptions, etc., it's a great tool to have. I look forward to being able to use it again!I had noticed that on certain sites that used Rich Text editors that I would experience frequent pauses during which my keystrokes weren't buffered (recorded). I type pretty fast when I get going, so I found this supremely annoying, especially when I was writing email on Gmail or writing a post on a forum that uses RTE. The pauses happened more frequently the faster I typed, so I would often have to go back and fix the errors created by the pauses. Grrrrrrr I looked through my add-ons and only found one that interacted with typing - Lazarus 2.3. As soon as I disabled it, the problem stopped.I then contacted the author via email and explained my problem. I asked to know if v3.0.5 might resolve this problem. This was his response: Lazarus 2.3 has some serious architectural problems that manifested itself when sav... Read more

I thought i had all my permissions and sharing done correctly until i tried to edit a text file across my network on another windows 7 machine. When i go to save the file it ask me "save as" which it never did while trying to do the same thing on a windows xp machine. Well after the save as i try to save over the existing file and it as if i wanna replace the file then after hitting ok i get Access Denied message.

-I have sharing on the drive and the file set to Everyone with full access
-I have security tab setup so Everyone and Administrators have full access on both drive and file
-I tried changing ownership of the file several times and that has done nothing on both drive and file
-Also tried owership with inheritance turned off and on
-Even tried with firewalls/av software turned on and off
-The file is not blocked or anything like that
-UAC is turned off on both machines
-I can edit the file locally
-I have notepad set to "Run as Administrator" on both windows 7 machines
-I can write to the root C: such as copying over a .exe file or something like that. The issue is editing a text file only.

I can edit a text file on the root C drive on a windows xp machine but not any windows 7 machines across network. I am guessing i must of missed some windows 7 permissions policy some where to enable this. Now i can edit a file on windows 7 machines if it's not on the root of the drive say C:\testfolder\testfile.txt

A:Access denied editing text files to root C drive

Just a thought; would that file be set read only on the Windows 7 computer?

Ok. I tried everything to repair an XP install on my Qosmio GA35-650. The recovery disk was a joke and wouldn't work...I decided to skip all of the DMI junk I read about and clean install a copy of XP.

Put the Raid drivers on a floppy and proceeded with the install. Setup would not install on the boot partition and gave me a "page_fault" error. I went into the bios and changed disk 0 to JBOD from RAID, disk 1 was already set to JBOD. Reentered setup and at the point where you select the partition to install to only one partition was shown. This was not a good thing as I backed up all of my data from the C: drive (Disk 0) to the F: Drive (Disk 1). I went back to the BIOS and set Drive 0 back to Raid and started the Setup procedure over again. Two partitions were showing this time but Disk 1 was not showing an F: drive designator.

The question. Did I lose all of my data on the second 100gb drive in the system? Is my F: drive recoverable?

Help!

A:Two HDDs in System. Deleted partition on Drive 0 now cant access Drive 1?

I think it depends on what Raid type you were using, some good info of different types here: http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?p=597010
Personally I don't like Raid all that much, as I don't think it's fantastic for data recovery or backup (which was its actual purpose, plus speed)

Hi...I'm new to the forums here, and need some help. I have an HP dv8000 laptop with two 80GB hard drives (160 total), "C" and "D", and I can't access anything on "D"...a long time ago I was able to create some picture folders on that drive, but it never let me put pictures in the folders. Then I tried to delete the folders, and it wouldn't let me...I would get the warning dialog box stating "D:\My Pictures D\photos is not accessible. Access is denied". I hate to think that HP would have given me two 80GB hard drives, and only one of them is usable. I was hoping someone here could maybe tell me some simple solution to allow me the use of this otherwise useless 80GB HDD...a way to "turn on" the access to it...can anyone help me???Thanx,TheresaP.S. I have Windows XP Professional

A:Help! Dual drive system-can't access "D" drive

Hello. First of, I'm pretty sure that your computer only has one harddrive with two partitions. I could be wrong, but I have never seen a laptop with two harddrives in my life. So you are having trouble accessing your D: partition? It seems like you dont have the appropriate permissions. So, you have to take ownership of all the folders in the D: drive. This article explains it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421 Hope this helps, let us know if you need help.

Have you any programs that use the dvd player other then windows media player - less likely ones to cause the problem would be real player & VLC (video lan) .
Have you tried to get a firmware upgrade for the DVD Player?
Go to : HP Support & Drivers | United States click drivers and software and type in your laptop models name. This will take you to the driver page and choose W7 64 bit (if available - vista if not) and you will have a list of all the drivers then select dvd/cd player if available for a firmware upgrade.

I *just* upgraded to an Athlon 64, and I'm having one tiny problem before I can be happy with how my system is running. Normally, multitasking is child's play for this computer... then I started loading my games onto it. Insert the CD, and Winamp would hiccup. Then, when it actually starts installing whatever game I try, Winamp plays at half speed, pops and hiccups, and becomes unlistenable. Firefox takes between 10 and 30 seconds to load an instance, and typing is slow, and shows up on screen in bursts. Furthermore, even my System sounds (right clicking, for example) become slow and broken. I've updated the BIOS and installed the latest chipset drivers... and my investigation heresofar has shown that the BIOS has my DVD drive set for UDMA Mode 2 as the Secondary Master, the jumper is set right, but Windows Secondary IDE Channel in the Device Manager says it's working PIO, and is set for "DMA If Supported." Any ideas?

Hi all,

Apologies if my terminology isnt the best fisrt of all.

I have an XP PC which no longer boots (I get a BSOD with 'Unmountable_Boot_Volume')

As I was planning on installing Windows 7 on a fresh drive anyway, I figured I would just take the hard drive out, put it in my hard drive docking station, and pull my pictures and music from it.

When I try to do this, the drive doesnt show in the 'my computer' list. I then go into Disk Manager to try and rectify the problem. The disc is there, showing as a dynamic disc (?), but it has a little 'no entry' sign on the icon. When trying to click tohe option to 'reactivate' - it times out each and every time.

So i'm stuck now and have no further knowledge on this to be able to try anything else. Thought I would ask here before taking it to a shop, to save some coinage!

Can anyone help? Some stats below:

XP PRO SP3 (Loaded on Hard drive that I pulled from my PC)
160Gb Seagate SATA HD

Thanks a lot

A:Cannot access files from drive with Operating system installed

If the Disk is a Dynamic disk, you'll have to connect it internally to a Desktop PC, you can't use an external enclosure/docking station (though I've seen some reports that it does work, sometimes).
From XP Help and Support (emphasis mine):

Quote:

Dynamic disks are not supported on portable computers, removable disks, detachable disks that use Universal Serial Bus (USB) or IEEE 1394 (also called FireWire) interfaces, or on disks connected to shared SCSI buses. If you are using a portable computer and right-click a disk in the graphical or list view in Disk Management, you will not see the option to convert the disk to dynamic.

Once connected internally, it should appear as a Foreign Disk. you can then right click on Foreign and Import the disk. It will then appear in Windows Explorer.

To access the files, you will likely have to take ownership of them;

as its rebooting i see nice green and gray lines all over the screen.. ok great so my vid cards are effed up... ok
i take out one, put the sli card in thats needed, and same green lines. Put back the othe 6800gs and then its fine. Ok so vid card #1 is bad.. no problemo- ill just run on one card and RMA this sucker.
SO i boot up to Win xp (sp2) it finds theres only one card.. yada yada.. ok we're disabling SLI and rebooting.. fine.
As its rebooting, I figured id put the side back on so I hold down the power button to shut it off. - i wasnt looking at the screen, but it was pretty late into the boot so im pretty sure the OS was loading at that point.
I put the side back on, reboot and then the system hangs ( does not freeze) aftter seeing nothing in the cd and trying to boot to hard disk.

A:[SOLVED] Can't back up files or access system HD as external drive

Have you tried booting from a retail Windows XP SP3 setup disc? The retail version will scan for existing installations of Windows and if it detects it, it will ask if you would like to repair the installation. If you choose yes, it will strip the hardware-dependent files, and overwrites important binary files. It will leave the user profile information intact.

This is the procedure I used back when I would upgrade a motherboard and did not want to install a fresh installation of XP or reactivate it. Make sure the hard drive is in the original system (the one you are trying to restore) and if needed, remove any other hard drives temporarily to increase the chance of success of the repair procedure.

Alternative: If you own a copy of Acronis True Image 10 or 11 (not 2010 or 2011) and have external storage available, you can create an image of the hard drive before attempting further repair operations. Additionally, you can download VMWare Player free of charge from VMware.com along with vSphere Converter standalone installer and create a virtual machine using the .TIB file created with Acronis True Image 10.0 or 11.0 or Acronis Echo Enterprise (I forget what they call it now, it used to be Acronis True Image Enterprise).

Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Workstation is also able to restore a .TIB backup file to a VM for testing/troubleshooting purposes.

Hope this info starts you in the right direction, good luck.

My AVG Virus scanner told me that I had Virtumonde on my computer. Ok massive tale of woe here. I was using my computer last week, when it shut down unexpectedly. I couldn't get it too boot back up properly, and when I tried to access system recovery and startup repair I couldn't use them either. I worked out that I had an unmountable boot volume problem. I fixed it by reseting the computer back to factory default and planned to load back my last system image once I could get into Windows. Unfortunately I didn't realise that my last system image wasn't complete and I don't have any earlier ones. This basically means that Windows doesn't recognise is as a full image and I can't restore it. I have a vhd file that is a copy of my C drive and another partial vhd of the boot partition. I need to get some files of my C drive vhd file but when I mount it in Win7 it just says that it is a RAW drive and I can't access it. I've tried mounting it in Parted Magic to no avail. Does anyone know any way I can either access the image or just restore the whole think to where my C drive is now? I've already tried to recover lost files but that just left me with over 10,000 misplaced files what I would have to traverse through trying to find what I need. I'm at my wits end, can someone please help me!

A:Partial system Image access on external hard drive

A long shot:

I assume that for a valid system image, it needs to be in the original folder (WindowsImageBackup) on the ORIGINAL drive it was on AND the associated shadow storage entry ("vssadmin list shadows" command) must be around.

Here's what you could try. Save the C: vhd somewhere safe. If you have a working version/image of Windows, take another system image (reserved/boot partition and C). Do a TAKEOWN of the WindowsImageBackup file and delete the larger of the 2 .vhd files (in \Backup YYYY-MM-DD HHMMSS folder) which will be your C partition image. Then copy your older C .vhd file into that same \Backup directory.

This is probably unlikely to work as there may be stuff in those xml files or the \Catalog folder that won't let things be missing or switched. Or something within the Shadow entry information that is used to double-check that all the pieces are there. But it's worth a shot.

I've never tried mounting a .vhd via Disk Management, but they're supposed to mount just fine from what I've read.

It looks like the GUID-thingy in the .vhd file name is the same for a drive every time a system image is taken.

I had a Toshiba laptop which experienced adapter/power supply problems. Versus purchasing a new power supply and adapter, I simply bought a new system.

The hard drive which was in the Toshiba is a Hitachi 85 gig SATA. The OS is Windows XP. The hard drive is password protected and I of course have the password.

I purchased a hard drive case and USB cables. My new HP laptop chimes when the hard drive is plugged in and unplugged and the hardware icon appears in the systray.

The hard drive does not show up in My Computer but does appear in Disk Manager as an unknown drive. While in Disk Manager I am given an option to initialize the drive, which I do not want to do as all of my old data and pictures are on that drive.

How can I access the drive or boot from the drive and maintain the integrity of the data. While I am familiar with windows Vista and XP I don't have a lot of experience with screwing around with the BIOS.

Is there any software which is user friendly which will help me interface with my old drive? What are my options for resolving this dilemma?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Does anyone know of a good free MP3/WAV editor?

I used to have a program that let me edit out parts of songs (like silent parts, or even delete parts of songs that I didn't like).

It also let me change the playback bitrate (for example, reduce song from 192 kbs to 128 kbs).

I don't remember what program that was, and I lost it when my computer crashed last year.

If you know of a similar free program, please let me know!

Thank you in advance,

Thomas Lessman

So, I just go a new compy, everything works fine except one thing:

Whenever I rune something like an Editor, or Trainer, or certain types of Apps, (I.E. Cheatengine, A few EXEs, some SWFs) But not at the same time...

I get an error that says:

"This application has failed to initialize properly (0x0000135) Click OK to terminate."

Am I supposed to download some kinda reader or software, or something?

Hi everybody :
I'm thinking about switching to Windows 10. One question I have is.......what photo editor is compatible ? Currently....using Windows 7.....I'm using PhotoShop Elements 12 / 32-bit. But, it seems with Windows 10, the only version of PhotoShop Elements is "PhotoShop Elements 2020", which comes in 64-bit version. But, my System is 32-bit system. Advice ?

Hi
are there any powerful 5.1 ch audio editors which are compliant with AC3?If not, are there any 5.1ch AC3 plugins for conventional editors?

A:Powerful 5.1 ch editors

5.1, for that one would think that you would need professional grade software. I've never done much audio editing, but i hear really good things about ACID and SoundForge from sony. Not cheap though. ther is also audacity, which is what i use, but i dont kniow about 5.1 on that.

It shows how to access 'Local Policy' & 'Group Policy' Editors.
I can't access them on my 2 computers.

Those editors are only available on the Pro and higher versions.

I have been advised elsewhere to leave all such software well alone, or at least treat with caution - particularly it seems if downloaded from CNET.  Would this forum's readers agree (or make any particular exceptions)?

I'm looking for a free photo editor I can download. I've used Picasa in the past but it seems to be a bit over encompassing. It picks out every face within every photo ever taken. I found face pictures of strangers only to find out they were way in the background of the pictures I have taken. I'm looking for something basic, user friendly and does a nice job in correcting sharpness, brightness/contrast, crops, etc., all the basics.

Here's some Image Editor suggestions.

Most Image Viewers can perform the simple tasks you mentioned.

I use Irfanview as my default Image Viewer, then when I need more editing power, I switch to Photoshop
The freeware Gimp would be the Freeware Editor to closest to the power of Photoshop.
There's no sense in using a complicated and possibly slow Image editor to perform basic editing tasks

I will soon be working on my website, and I was wondering if anyone knows of good HTML Editors to use.
I am mainly looking for something that I can set all the links up while offline. I was using Frontpage Express last time and the webpage worked fine on my PC but when I uploaded it I had lots of trouble getting all the links fixed up (The online pages were trying to link to files on my computer).
I would also like something that is very simple to use.

Thanks
Grenge

I use Dreamweaver, and am happy with it. I have also used Frontpage Express, and you will like Dreamweaver much better. As there are many sites that offer tips and help with Dreamweaver, you should find all sorts of useful lthings to do.

Any ideas for free/shareware editors that can do layers and have a few effects? I have tried Paintshop pro and Artgem and both have caused problems with my WIN 98 HP w/HP printer and visioneer scanner. Problems include OSD errors on startup and various programs reporting page faults that seem to disappear when the editors are removed. I liked what I could see of Artgem, but I could not keep it. Thanks.

Hello there.
I'm currently using HxD for...well, my Hex Editing needs. It's pretty great, but a big problem is that it can only compare 1 difference during each search. It's okay for when I'm expecting to find only 1 difference, but in most cases, I need to find the locations of tons and tons of differences.
What I'm looking for; A hex editor that can Compare between 2 files, and find all/multiple differences at the same time.

Thank you in advance

Have tried just about everything recommended to improve performance and am at my wits end. Does anybody have good advice regarding reg editors? Don't want to start monkeying with the registry and really mess things up! I ran a scan with RegCure and it posted over 1200 errors but am not about to buy a product I am unsure of. Anything free out there?

A:Registry Editors

Most people here, including me, don't recommend using registry cleaners. They can delete things that can cripple your computer. I've done it to mine a few times. But, if you feel you need to do something there is THIS SITE which is Micro$oft's One Care that will go through your registry. Since it is their program, XP, it might be OK. But I'm not endorsing it. It too might do something wrong. I've used it a couple of times and so far nothing bad has happened. You can also click on Start, Run and do a sfc /scannow it will run a check on your system files and repair or replace them. You must have your XP disc in and sit there while it's running, because it won't always find the file it's looking for and you need to click on the "retry" button. It takes about 40 to 45 minutes on my computer...I'm sure someone else will come along with more advice soon and you can ponder all of it and decide what to do, or not do.Good Luck...

For RTCW - Check their forums here :

http://www.rtcw.co.uk/forums/

I believe what you need is RTCW SDK - If nothing turns up at the above then use :

http://www.google.com

There are numerous mods and user missions so presumably the designers released an SDK.

I play Op Flashpoint and there are several gigs of d/ls for that.

In "My Music" I have two sorts of files. Those I have downloaded from KaZaAlite, and those I have got off CD's using XP Media Player.

All the audio editors I have tried (including one that was suggested on this forum) either won't save the results as an mp3 (illegal?) or won't open certain files.

I do belly dancing and the tracks I have are maybe 15min long but the dance is 3min in the middle of the song! I was successful in chopping a song I downloaded off Kazaa (before Power Audio Editor run out of free time) but with the new audio editors I have tried, they will not open songs I have got from CD (Copywrite??).

Since I am only using the demo versions I wonderd if the purchased software would do the trick, but ranging in price from $5 - $345 I am unwilling to pay the price until I know more (and you can double those US dollars to equal NZ dollars!).

Greetings! I've searched everywhere for the answer to this issue. It must be common, but I can't find it anywhere. I'm using MS Word 2007, but the problem was the same in 2003. I sometimes get a text box that is behind regular text. I need to move it. One normally just selects a text box and drags, or cut and paste, it where one wants. However, when it is behind text, it can't be selected. I have found no way to select normal text and "send it behind."

How do I get to this text box that is behind my regular text? I've been told to "move the regular text out of the way, then you will be able to get to your text box." But the text box moves with text!

Thanks,

7nyerik

You can't post a link to your computer to post an image. We cannot access your computer. Upload the png image as an attachment please. To do that, scroll down to "Manage Attachments" then click on "Browse" to locate the file on your computer then "open" it and then click on "Upload" and submit your reply.

What is the best registry editor, if there is one? I have been using Uniblue and ran it and corrected my registry. I then downloaded a trial copy of Registry Cure and ran it, It says I have over 600 errors in my registry. Anyway my subscription to Uniblue has expired, what should I get.

Thanks,
Phil

A:[SOLVED] Registry Editors

Hi Phil. . .

I would advise that you do not use any of these products. They are an absolute waste of money and they could end up corrupting your registry. Then you'll be back to see me when the BSOD epidemic begins.

The items it is flagging as "errors" are not errors at all - just entires in the registry that currently have no association to them. They hurt nothing, take up very little space and cause non-measurable time loss during boot-up when the registry is assembled from files found on your hard drive. We are talking about a fraction of a second.

600 items out of the Vista NT Registry which can easily contain 500,000 + entries represents just 0.12% of total.

To give you an example of how some of these "errors" occur - assume that you no longer have use for Microsoft Word and un-install it. A registry scanner/cleaner would then pick up anything associated with MS Word and its files, whose file extensions are .doc (≤ Word 2003) or .docx (Word 2007) files. The un-installed Word file extension relations found in the registry would still exist, but have no program to open should a doc/x file be clicked on.

I suggest that you leave the registry alone. There may be a time in the future after the installation/un-installation of hundreds of programs where this becomes necessary, but then should only be done so under the instructions of someone familiar with registry cleaners. Most important - back up the registry before using a re... Read more
