Q: X1 Extreme Bricked Black Screen by BIOS update

Hi, just got my laptop yesterday. Lenovo Vantage update had laptop restart and now my laptop fans spin and the screen is complelety black. No POST or Lenovo screen. It does play a 8 bit sounding noise. This seems to be a common reported issue. Why is this update not removed from Lenovo Vantage? Is there a fix for this? video of sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZO2-LSe3Wcw code from lenovo android app:Description: TCG-compliant functionality-related error (might be the TPM initialization failure) Actions: Replace the system board (service provider only).

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue.http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Yoga-Series/yoga-500-15ibd/downloads/D...I haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

I have tried combination keys method windows key+ B button, also made a recovery Flash drive from the latest BIOS, but no luck.

Hi, So I have an old ENVY 15-3000 that I was performing a BIOS update on a few days ago. The SSD in it isn't the factory original OEM one so there isn't an HP_TOOLS partition. So after the update ran inside Windows, it rebooted and is now in a bricked state. The caps lock light is flashing, and the airplane mode key is solid orange. Following HPs instructions on how to make a BIOS recovery USB stick, I have found that the installer files HP provides for this model are outdated and do not have the capability to make a recovery USB drive. Is there anything I can do about this or is it just bricked for good? Thanks,Rashed.

Downloaded the HP software assistant and it suggested an urgent update to BIOS 3.6. I get splash screen but when I press F10 for setup, it hangs after putting "SETUP" down in the lower right hand corner. F9 shows "BOOT" in lower right hand corner.Discovered the "crisis recovery" jumper and tried 3.57 off a thumb drive. Same thing...  My recollection is that it had 3.04 on it, but can't be sure. Can't find any earlier BIOS than 3.57 to try.

Here is a method that worked to rescue a HDX18 laptop running an Insyde BIOS. Download the latest BIOS for this model.  ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp51501-52000/sp51618.exe Save it to the desk top and use 7-Zip to "Extract Files, when you open it you will find a file by the name of 3610F34.fd Rename that file to 3610.BIN (I used capitols) Grab a USB flash drive 2 GB or smaller and it should automatically be formatted with FAT32, when it's done copy and paste your newly named BIOS file on to the flash drive, safely eject the drive from your computer. (do not just pull it out from the USB port)  On my Bricked HDX18.   Remove the battery and adapter and hold down the power button for 30 seconds to do a hard reset.  Plug in the flash drive in one of the left USB ports, hold down the "Windows"+"B" key and while your holding it down plug in the adapter.   Boot up and the laptop should start to beep and read the flash drive, release the keys and when finished the laptop will shut down. Leave it sit for 3 minutes and boot to Windows.  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------  This method did not work on my dv8, nor did it work here for mrtranmsb :  http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-systems-and/Please-help-recovery-Bios-HP-DV4-1326TX/... Earlier today I downloaded BIOS_Acer_1.11_A_A.zip from Acer's web site and ran the TMBI0111.exe executable it contained. My laptop rebooted as expected and the flashing process ran to completion (100%).It rebooted again but remained stuck at the Acer boot logo (without the dancing dots). Now the laptop won't boot at all. If I switch the machine off, then on, the same thing happens: stuck at Acer boot logo. I cannot enter the setup utility (F2) either.Note that the machine still reboots when pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete, and the keyboard illumination command (Fn-F9) still works.Any idea?

Well I mistakenly decided to try updating the BIOS on the Stick 300 before I was going to try slapping x64 Windows 10 on there.....and it bricked spectacularly, using the EFI USB method.  Found these forums and I have the same behavior as others, blue light on for a bit, flash flash activity on attached usb memory stick, blue light off, and it repeats, zero HDMI output to the monitor at any point. I cannot find a way to ask Lenovo about a repair option.  I would like to talk or email someone about sending it in to be addressed for a certain price type of deal. It is out of warranty, which I find strange that the warranty is so short on this product, and that seems to make it about impossible to contact support. Anyone know of a way to get their attention to get replies?

Hi all, Need help on my Lenovo G40-70 that I've just bought 6 months ago where I accidently bricked the laptop after BIOS update. It seems during the BIOS updating process it when well but after 2nd reboot there's some message on the screen that the BIOS failed to update factory setting and it freeze on the message for quiet sometimes. After a long wait I decided to long press Start button for hard reboot. Then the scary part comes in where it seems the laptop can't longer shows the Lenovo logo & cannot even boot to Windows, just black screen. Hope anyone can help me on this and give some advice on what I'm going to do. I would like to tried myself first before ending up with warranty claim since I'm worried I've brick the warranty due to wrong BIOS update procedure....

hi mahdhir2005,

Im sorry to hear that.

I would suggest you call the Lenovo Technical Team regarding the Issue. If it is the BIOS that's causing the issue then there maybe no source or option to have it fixed without they're help or service.

If the BIOS software you downloaded was from a legit Lenovo Site and correct model, then I think It will be ok to Just report them what happened and ask for possible option.

Hope this helped
Thanks!

All I wanted was to update the graphics drivers (ATI), but for some reason that required that the BIOS be updated to 2.04 or higher. SoI updated the BIOS to 2.26 using the windows utility, everything appeared to work correctly and it said time to reboot. When I rebooted the system, the POST screen came up and the fan went to full tilt and it just stayed like that. With a sinking feeling in my stomach, I sat and watched it for 10 min. but nothing happened. The system was completely unresponsive to any input, including the power button and I eventually pulled the plug and then the battery to shut it down. When I plugged it back in... nothing. Not even the AC power LED comes on when it's plugged in. If I press the power button, the CD drive initializes, the HD spins up, and after awhile it gets quite warm to the touch, so I guess the CPU is getting power although the fan isn't working which makes me nervous. Is there any hope? Should I spend the money to buy a USB floppy and try the boot-block recovery method (already tried a few times with a USB key and nothing happened) or should I just put that towards a new motherboard?

A:Z61m bricked by BIOS update

A floppy drive is necessary piece of equipment for anyone who plans on using Windows since you'll encounter issues which may require a floppy utility to solve. If you're fluent in removing the palm rest, it is worth disconnecting the battery to ensure BIOS is flushed and reatttempting normal boot before continuing recovery techniques, if you determine your BIOS is still truly smoked and if you haven't become completely disgusted with the Z6x, you can buy them preowned used from IBM.com for about $350 and just like buying a certified pre owned Lexus and it includes a seven day no questions asked "I just don't like its face" return warranty and a 90 day warranty just as good as the new systems warranty.  That warranty is upgradeable and it will include the latest BIOS and software updates including your latest video driver that got you into the mess.

I selected it and it tried to install and reboot, but it hung with a blank screen and white cursor in the upper left hand corner. Finally I had to give up and try to power off/on the machine but now there is no video at all. The power supply fan runs loudly and cycles a bit. How can I restore my computer to working condition? I downloaded the latest bios iso to cd and tried to boot using a usb cd-rom, but that doesn't seem to be working. Any help greatly appreciated - thanks!

Simpy put I went to update the bios on my notebook as I have previously without incident.  Well this time the update downloaded, installed and powered down Windows Vista 64bit SP1.  After that nothing! The power lights come on but that is it.  No HP Screen, No MSFT Screen no nothing.  I honestly think this is a bios update caused by HP's own update. This is the update I installed: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-67379-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&...   Long story short HP online chat support was very helpful and will be sending me a prepaid next day air box to ship at their expense to fix this problem.  Any comments are welcome but I strongly recommend anyone with this notebook not install this update!!! I already took out the battery, unseated the ram and the like with no results.  I sure hope they can fix this.

A:DV4-1120us bricked by HP's own Bios update

lordvader311, several of us already bricked our dv4s with HP latest bios update but you can fix it yourself in just a few minutes as followsBTW, the credit for this goes to PONGSTER who told us all about it.....  Edit Note: I've edited the steps for dv4-1140GO users. By the way, the 1125nr, 1140go and the CQ45 seem to share the same board, as they use the exact same BIOS Flashing application.  This bodes well for all of you who need to get theire dv4 fixed, instead of sending it in for repairs.  Remember, if you messed up your BIOS, sending it in for repairs is not the only solution, as I found out, after researching on all possible solutions.  Follow these steps before sending anything in for repairs  I have a dv4-1125nr.  I'm not sure this will help, but you may as well try it out before sending yours in for repair.  I fixed my messed BIOS update by following the exact steps I'm going to outline here.  There is hope, and you don't need to have your Motherboard replaced.  Simply follow the instructions and you should be typing on your dv4 again in no time.  It took me about 10 minutes, tops, to get all this done. Here we go: Okay... here are the exact steps I took to get my dv4 back in working condition after a failed BIOS update using HP's buggy update (I just had to repeat what we all already know... ) I have merely cut and paste 0.0's steps, so all credit goes to him and the genius over at the Acer sect... Hi everyone, I have a Yoga 720 model 80X6002JUS. I recently downloaded the new BIOS that was posted yesterday (April 3, 2018) 1YCN30WW(V1.07).  When I ran it, it said it was older than the version I was running. I was on version 2.05 or 2.06. I figured it was just labeled incorrectly, so I went to my BIOS and allowed older versions to be installed. I ran it, and now my computer is "bricked". The power button light turns on, I can turn the keyboard backlight on and off with fn+space, but nothing shows up on the screen. I can't get to the BIOS or picking a boot method to re-install Windows.  Is there any master way to reflash a BIOS? I can send the laptop in for repair, but would prefer to try and reflash it myself.  Worst case, does anyone know the best way for me to plug the SSD into a different computer to take off my personal stuff before I send it in? I have Intel® SSD 600p Series which has a PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4 interface. I checked Amazon and I don't see any USB enclosures that will fit that. Note to Lenovo: I would consider taking the new (or old?) BIOS offline if this happened to anyone else.  Thank you for any help you guys can provide

Hi, attempted to upgrade my Yoga 920's BIOS using this BIOS version (link to README):https://us.download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/5ncn41ww.txt After running the executable, Windows 10 restarted but never came back and the Laptop will not boot. The keyboard and power button flash for about 1 second and then it turns off again. The screen remains off and the same thing happens over and over again until I press and hold the power button for about 8 seconds to completely turn off the system. I tried pressing the "recovery" pin-hole button next to the power button with a papaer clip but the same behavior occurs. I guess it's bricked so I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to force the Yoga 920 to flash a recovery BIOS or something from a USB stick. Thanks.

A:Z820 Bricked Bios after Firmware update

Hi: If you run the BIOS file again (on another PC), the intruction page opens and you can try this...I'd burn the DOS based flash files on a CD, since the DVD drive may be looking for a CD to recover from, but according to the instructions below, you can use a USB flash drive (formatted in the FTA 32 files system, not NTFS). Just put the files inside the folder on the CD, not the folder. Fail-safe BootBlock Recovery ModeHP Workstations include 64 KB of write-protected boot block ROM that provides a way to recover from a failed update of the system BIOS ROM, for instance in the event of a power loss.  Fail-safe BootBlock Recovery Mode will detect that the BIOS is unusable and boot the workstation in a recovery mode and search the root folder of any FAT/FAT32 file system on any USB media source (hard drive, flash drive, etc.) for a compatible binary image. The binary (.bin) file in the DOS Flash folder should be copied to the root of the desired storage device, and the system powered on. Once the binary image is located, the BIOS recovery process will be attempted. The automatic recovery will continue until the BIOS is successfully updated or restored.

Does anybody have some advice before I call Lenovo?

After reading a thread like this, I'm afraid to call support. I don't want them to void the warranty.
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Blank-screen-after-Bios-Upgrade-on-X200/ta-p/...
I do part time computer repair and I ordered a C40-05 for a client. I was installing all the available updates from Lenovo, and the BIOS update bricked it. Black screen. No beeps. I've tried all the unplugging, button holding, remove the CMOS, etc. None of it has improved the situation. If Lenovo voids my warranty and I have to pay for a replacement, it's really gonna put a hurting on me. I'm a single dad and I don't have $600 to blow on a problem caused by a bad update from the same company that sold me the computer. I believe that when I buy something from someone, it's because I trust they'll make sure I have a good experience with their product or service...and now that the system is bricked, I feel like I can't trust them to take care of it. I guess we'll find out pretty soon. :/
This woman thinks I did something the wrong way and broke her brand new computer, and her home phone runs through it...so her phone has been down for 4 days. I def lost a customer, and I feel guilty for choosing a PC that broke on day 1. I've had a lot of good experience with Lenovos in the past, but I guess this phone call is gonna determine whether I stick with them or find a new supplier. Cross your fingers for me.

Power light and amber light on the f12 key are on.  Left it sit that way for 10 minutes, just in case.  Won't respond to ctrl-alt-del or power button.  Had to hold down the power button to turn off.  Won't respond to any function keys held down during boot.

My sister asked me to update her laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-16N; Part number PSC0ME-01S00SEN) from Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) to Windows 8 (64-bit).
So I did.

Then I went to Toshiba's UK website to check if there were any drivers I needed to install for Windows 8. The only one was a BIOS update (to BIOS v1.70). I have no idea what the previous BIOS version number was.

So I run the update application within Windows 8. Phoenix Technologies WinPhlash starts and then halfway through the update, the whole thing freezes.

The trackpad wouldn't move the cursor or anything. I had no option but to unplug the laptop from the wall and remove the battery. The laptop is not under warranty.

Of course, now it won't turn on. It beeps once when I press the power button, but the system doesn't turn on. A couple of minutes later, it sounds one long beep then two short beeps. It then keeps repeating this "one long beep, two short beeps" sequence every couple of minutes.

I have Googled and read website after blog after forum post, but nothing works. The links to the software suggested on these websites/blogs/forums are usually dead, so I cannot try what they suggest.

The most common solution is the Phoenix Crisis Recovery Tool. I have managed to download v1.0.0.4 which is supposed to enable me to make a bootable USB key. I was having some minor problems with the laptop so i decided to update the bios. Ive downloaded the bios udpate from my laptop's official page, followed the instructions under windows, everything completed as usual, no errors at all. The laptop booted into windows again so i went to sleep. In the morning i tried turning it on but nothing. Both of the leds were flashing for a second only when i was holding the power button for like 10sec. The display wasnt turning on, the fans werent spinning etc.I tried reseting the CMOS battery, also tried removing the ram, battery and the hdd. Same result. The laptop is not under warranty. So what should I do?Why does that happen even if i have followed all the instructions?

Today I decided to install suggested BIOS update via Lenovo Vintage, computer rebooted but about 5-10 min after I lost power.  Now the PC does not output any signal to a TV or Monitor via DP. It does not repspond to Bluetooth Keyboard - tried old USB, but not even Caps or Num Lock lights are coming up (all USB ports on Tiny are USB 3.0) I see there are some tools available:Lenovo UEFI Diagnostics - Bootable USB (64-bit)  USB Drive UEFI BIOS Flash Package Have no idea how to start it from USB now. I am thinking to swap OS SDD for a spare one with bootable diagnostics.  Not sure what are my options now

Having problems such as frequent mouse disconnections (a wired one) and frozen sessions I decided to look if there was any update to my model's BIOS and indeed there was one.I downloaded the .exe from Dell.com, then run and followed the instructions. Suddenly, while the program was deleting old BIOS, the screen went black and the computer showed it was still on. I left it 5-6 hours at that state, but nothing happened. I pressed the button once, twice, hold it for a while, but nothing, it was still on. Later I decided to unplug it from power, and when the battery died, I turned it on again. However, nothing happens and there is a whistle warning me that there is no BIOS (I guess).
What can I do? Is it possible to flash a BIOS again, or should I buy a new motherboard (or system board)?A guy at a random service spot told me it is possible to flash BIOS again without buying a new motherboard, but I am not sure about this.

A:Bios Update Bricked my Dell Inspiron N5010

It is possible to have the BIOS chip externally flashed -- or the board replaced.  The former will likely cost less, though you're probably looking at a minimum of $150 in labor for the procedure -- which appears to be on the order of twice what the system is worth on the used market.
You may be better off upgrading a new(er) system rather than repairing this old one - or buying a complete working used system and transferring over the mainboard to yours.

Does anybody have some advice before I call Lenovo? After reading a thread like this, I'm afraid to call support. I don't want them to void the warranty.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Blank-screen-after-Bios-Upgrade-on-X200/ta-p/...I do part time computer repair and I ordered a C40-05 for a client. :/This woman thinks I did something the wrong way and broke her brand new computer, and her home phone runs through it...so her phone has been down for 4 days. I def lost a customer, and I feel guilty for choosing a PC that broke on day 1. I've had a lot of good experience with Lenovos in the past, but I guess this phone call is gonna determine whether I stick with them or find a new supplier. Cross your fingers for me.

BTW: Have you read this, which is specifically about the N5010:

I noticed those instructions don't tell you to reinstall the motherboard battery, but you should do that at the end, assuming the method solves the problem.
If you want to try this, do it after you try clearing BIOS by pulling the motherboard battery, as I outlined above.
And you follow that other guy's method to re-flash BIOS entirely at your own risk!

I received a error message 90B I think that my cooling fan was malfunctioning. I followed a suggestion to update my BIOS, it went to do a restart after the BIOS did its thing, and now it's a black screen. The power button is lit up, and I'm unable to turn it off by holding the power button down. The fans are still not working, so I need to power it down by taking the battery out. I have tried about everything on the help forum and nothing seems to work. Help

Well i've gone and done it. I attempted to update my BIOS and in the middle of it, the screen went black and the computer refuses to boot up.

HP Pavilion dv9628nr.

I've been trying to research this for over a week now and i've tried everything i've come across. I haven't been able to use a CRISIS RECOVERY DISK to bring the BIOS back to life and i've tried it sever different ways now. Nothing seems to work. Could i be doing it wrong? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a bad flash.

Unfortunately 'laptop' doesn't really give us anything really to work with.

Brand, model and flash method may help.

Recently I tried to setup a new HP Notebook 15-ay114ng running Windows 10 Pro, but I was unsuccessful and am stuck now. When installing all the drivers from the HP support pages, I also installed a BIOS update from version F.13 to F.23. II downloaded the program and ran the update, but there was no error, nor was the version of the BIOS changed. Then I booted In the HP diagnostic UEFI environment and found under "Firmware management" that I could choose "Apply now" to update from F.13 to F.23. The flashing procedure was reported to be successful. But upon rebooting the screen went black and nothing happened (except for the noise of the fan and the hard drive spinning). I tried to follow the instructions under https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833, but no HP BIOS update screen appears. What else can be done?

While in windows an alert told me I needed to update my bios and restart windows, which I did but it hung on the update screen for about 4 or 5 hours. I then tried to power off but the power button did not work so I removed the battery. At this point when I powered the laptop It does not boot, the fans turn on but just a black screen. I have tried an external monitor and taking the battery out and holding the power button down. I'm not sure what to do next. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance  Ben

Hi -- on an Inspiron 15R 5521, on Widows 8, I wanted to do a reinstallation of Windows. Ran into difficulty getting that to work, so went to Drivers & Downloads. It suggested a Bios update. I downloaded and ran it. It said the current BIOS version was A06 and it would update to A14. It got 25% of the way into the Update, and failed.I left it on for a few hours in the stupid, vain hope it would somehow spring back to life by itself. Eventually disconnected power, removed the battery, reinstalled both and tried to reboot. No boot, nothing on the screen. From what I can find, this model does not support BIOS recovery. Is there some other way to re-update the BIOS? This is extremely frustrating -- I was just trying to go back to a clean OS install before selling it -- now Dell's software has provided me with an unsellable brick!

Hi zlsmith,
Do you feel the fan spinning? Can you try to boot into BIOS <F2> or diagnostics <F12>?
Please click my DELL-username and send me a Private Message with the Dell Service Tag number and your email address, so that we can check on this for you.
