Microsoft Works

Q: Microsoft Works

I need to uninstal Microsoft Works from my computer. I am starting a job and the program I will be using does not work with Microsoft Works. I have version 5.0 Works 2000. I went to add/remove programs but when I click on that it wants to install Works instead of remove it, it's already installed on my computer. I called Microsoft but they will not help me, they tell me Works 2000 is obsolete and they offer no technical help. Does anyone know how I can remove Works from my computer? I have an emachines 700id with Windows millenium.
Thank you,
Donna

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I downloaded some Microsoft updates, rebooted, and now my Microsoft Works Calendar won't come up. I've been to MS website and tried their fix - it didn't work. Next option is to delete Works and reload. My question is - will this deletion get rid of all of my data files along with the program? Also, is Outlook Express part of Works? I've tried to find out, but can't. I'm really concerned about making a mess of things.

Outlook Express is not part of Works.

When I start MS Works 9, and go to File Open, it goes to My documents. I would like it to go to C:, Program Files(x86), Microsoft Works, Documents. That is where I want to put Word Processors And Spreadsheets. If I cannot open Documents Folder automatically, I at least want Microsoft Works Folder to open automatically. There must be a way to do this.

I recently purchased an ASUS Windows 8.1 64 bit computer.  I transferred my Microsoft Works Version 8.0 word processor and spreadsheet files from my old computer onto the new computer.  I just purchased the Microsoft Office 2013 Home and Student Edition (64 bit version) from an online vendor and installed the software onto my new computer.

I have no problems opening my Works spreadsheet files in Excel.  However, when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get gibberish.  I did some research online and found out that there is a Microsoft tool called Works 6-9 Converter which allows one to open Works files in Word.

I downloaded the Works 6-9 Converter tool from the Microsoft Support website and installed it on my PC.  However, when I subsequently attempted to open a Works word processor file in Word, a dialog box appeared with the error message "Word cannot start the converter Wks9Pxy.cnv" and the file did not open properly (i.e., I got gibberish).

I did a little more research online and found out that uninstalling the Works 6-9 Converter, then downloading and installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package, and finally reinstalling the Works 6-9 Converter may correct this problem.  I followed these steps, but unfortunately when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get the same error message and the file does not open properly. ... Microsoft Office 2010 is installed on my PC (Dell Studio XPS8100, Windows 7). Another member of the household has asked whether she can install Microsoft Works 9.0 on my PC, now that her PC is on its last legs. (She greatly prefers Works over Office, for its simplicity and because of her long-term familiarity with Works.) If Works 9.0 is installed onto my PC, would this cause problems for Office 2010, Works 9.0, and/or my PC? If so, are there workarounds? Thanks.

A:Microsoft Works 9.0 and Microsoft Office 2010 compatibility

The official "word" from Microsoft (pun intended) is that Office & Works can co-exist on the same PC.

Provided you do not intend to share documents between Office & Works (ie both suites will be used separately), there are no "workarounds" or special procedures you need to remember when using them.

Hello,

I have been using Microsoft Works database function for many years. I am a secretary at a sportsmens club and I have the membership developed in a database that contains name, address, zipcode,ss#,drivers licence # etc.

From this databsae I create labels to be used to mail out our club newsletters. We currently have over 1400 members that we store pertinent information on.

Using the label program in Microsoft works in previous versions such as 4.0 or 4.5 has been a breeze and always worked wonderfully.

We upgraded our computer system and now have the microsoft works version 2000. We were able to load our databse in this version and have been using it quite regularly. We are continually adding to this database daily.

My problem is, I have yet to figure out how to develop the labels for the mailing addresses. You would think this would be an easy process but when I try to do this I get an error message saying I have characters such as periods etc and cannot produce these labels. That would be quite a bit of extra work to remove any of those special characters and before I would do that I would want to make sure if that is really what the problem is. Why would it be a problem in works 2000 and not works 4.5

Right now I have the program loaded on a laptop with works 4.5 just to devleop the labels. I really do not want to convert to using just 4.5 because of the dates that I use in the databse and with the newer version it recognizes dates in the year 2000 and greater.... Read more

My husband is a pilot. When we had Windows 95 & Microsoft Works 4.0, he saved his flight logbook on a Works spreadsheet program, then fortunately onto a floppy disk. When we upgraded to Windows 98 we also installed Microsoft Office Pro 97. Now when we try to print something off the Works spreadsheet (like only 1 page), we can't. It tries to print all 100 or so pages, & gives us a message about having over 500 fonts. Is there anyway to take the data off the floppy & transfer it into Microsoft Excel 97? I've tried, but it comes out in a format that looks like hyeroglyphics. It would be absolutely impossible to manually re-enter all the massive amounts of data on the floppy, & it of course has to be added to all the time as flight hours are added. ANY suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Hello,I am new to this forum and not very computer literate. The computer in question is running Vista Home Premium. The problem that has recently occured is that it comes up with "MICROSOFT WORKS 8 NOT WORKING" every time I try to open the calender.
Any advice would be appreciated,

Thanks

Michael

A:microsoft works 8

You aren't the only one experiencing this problem. I did a little research on this. MS Works 9 was the edition that was recommended for Vista. Some Works 8 users have been able to run it in Vista (those using the 8.5 edition or later seem to be getting fewer error messages - but not all); but it seems most users are getting the error message you got.

You might want to try using the free office suite LibreOffice (formerly known as OpenOffice). It will open your Works files. It will not save files in that format, but you will be able to save them in MS Office formats, or the default Open Document format. LibreOffice is available from www.libreoffice.org

If you are looking for something with a calendar, try Windows Live Essentials email program Windows Live Mail. It has a calendar available as part of the program (similar to Outlook). http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials.

What does "it comes up all encrypted" mean? Exactly what do you do to open it?
Which program in it did you try to open, the spreadsheet, word processor, database?
We cannot see what you're getting so if you can just tell us exactly what happened from start to finish, we can probably figure it out.

Bought an HP desktop two years ago with Vista Home Ed.. Had Works 9 pre-loaded and no cd's. Geek Squad did the back up discs at time of purchace. Works word processor will not load. Getting an error message saying that a file has been altered or moved, etc. and to reload Works. Since I don't have a Works disc, there is a problem. All of the other features of the Works programs are normal. Tried system restore, but failed every time. I keep the machine trimmed down, eliminate junk, etc.. Any suggestions? Welcome Gary.

>> is there any way that I can convert the works files to excel files

Yes. In Works, choose Save As from the File menu. Under "Save As Type", there should be various Excel options.

>> am I better off putting works spreed sheet on the new machine

It's up to you. Excel has very many more features than Works spreadsheet ; then again, Works also comes with word processor and database applications, which you may not have on your new PC. If it's "Works Suite", then it also has Word. You could have Works and Excel on the new one, if space isn't an issue.

Every time I open Microsoft Works a message appears saying "More than 500 fonts are in the system. Reduce the number of fonts or the display may be incorrect". What on earth can I do to correct the number of fonts?

A:Microsoft Works

Fonts are in the C:\windows\fonts folder. You know what I did? I went into Windows Explorer and I created another folder right next to that one called Fontsmore, and I drug a whole bunch of fonts into that one. If I needed them again, I added them back in--but only as I needed them. Be careful which ones you move.

A:Microsoft works

Hi andy meyrick

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Is this the Windows Address Book you are referring to?
Outlook Express also uses the Windows Address Book.

If so, do a Search for the file extension: *.wab

If not, let us know what operating system you are using and program the address book was associated with.

I do not remember an Address Book associated with Microsoft Works, but then again, I used Microsoft Works only briefly.

if you goto start , control panal , view, explorer bar, folders, find that microsoft file, see if there is anything wrong with it, normally, it comes with that READ ME file, have you checked it all? if that's okay, then

goto start, Run, type in appwiz.cpl YOU have to wait, check change/remove programs. scroll down to microsoft, and check if the spreadsheet is installed completely with microsoft office? sometimes, it is only that the basic or minimum software that installed into your computer..

you might have to CHANGE and follow that little setup. i hope you have the cd. you can REINSTALL or CHANGE INSTALLATIONS for a complete works launcher 7.0 office. that is my best guess, i think that this spreadsheet saving the first letter of any doc. is some glitch or something your computer caught. sorry it that wasn't much help... i tried.

My last computer ran XP, I had to replace it and the new computer is running W7, SP1 with IE 10.

When I open Works 9 and, say am outlining whatever and I go to set a tab in the ruler. Almost every time I do this a window opens that has Tabs in the upper left hand corner and a number of tabs already preset. I would like to turn this off as it is irritating to try to set a tab and almost every time you do this window opens.

Have you recently installed a device driver or any software which installs a virtual driver (for example, a third-party firewall, antivirus, or cd-burning application)? Since Windows Safe Mode loads only a minimal set of system drivers & ignores third-party drivers, it could possibly be an issue with a recently introduced driver or any of the aforementioned types of software.

If that rings any bells, uninstall the offending software or driver and see if that allows Works to function in normal mode.

I have seen posted in various places to resolve the problem, but to no avail. Click to expand...

How would anybody here know what you may have all ready tried but did not work for you?

Does the problem only occur with MS Works or does it occur for other programs?

Hi, I have about 20 PCs here at work, all with Windows XP Pro SP3, and only a portion of them does it do anything at all when I go to print to the shared FAX via Microsoft FAX...

I've been trying to get it to work on mine first, then once I figure that out, I can get it working on the rest of them... So, I went to one of the computers that it does work on to find some files that my system said it was missing when I tried to open up the Microsoft FAX Console... these files were, FXSAPI.DLL, FXSTIFF.DLL, fxslnt.exe. Once I copied those to my system, the Microsoft FAX Console would open up, but still it did nothing when I would try to print to the shared FAX. I noticed in the configuration it was set to use my Sprint Aircard as a fax, so I disabled it and went through the configuration again, so that it wouldn't have a local fax to try to use, but that still didn't work...

I have been all over the internet and have spent several hours trying to make this work ... My boss is very adament that I get this working... I would appreciate any assistance in this matter that can provided...

I am attempting to set up a credit card log in microsoft works. After bringing up the template for credit card log showing column's, I enter card number in first column then click to next column, type, to enter type of card. When I do this the previously entered card number changes and adds (E+14) to the number I have entered. What am I doing wrong? Why does the number change?

While I never use Works, that problem is also in Excel so will comment on that, it should apply.

You need to format the cell holding the credit card number as text, because it is interpreting the card number as a very long number and truncating it as you see.

You could try widening the column also, however using text would help more.
Try using spaces in the number? (i.e. 1234 5678 0123456)

Hey,

I hope you guys can help!

I have been writing an essay in Microsoft Works Word Processor. It is around 18 pages. I have been working on it for about 3 weeks.

I saved my document the other day, turned of my computer, turned on my computer the other night and received the following message:

works cannot open c:documentsandsettings/documents/itassignment.wps the file may be in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any of the installed converters, or the file may be corrupt

I am completely confused and don't know how to open this file.

I have also tried opening it up in Word and open office but no luck. Even tried renaming them.

Help!

Try running chkdsk on the drive/partition where it's stored...then see if all is well.XP Chkdsk, Using the Graphical Version (My Computer) - http://www.updatexp.com/windows-xp-chkdsk.html Follow the instructions for running the Graphical Version, please. Check marks in both options presented. You might also want to defrag your system.Louis

I am a novice so please forgive my bumbling here- I have worked with technical support staff at work to resolve issues but never on my own pc. I have windows xp and am having a problem accessing several programs/parts of programs associated with microsoft works. I cannot access clip art gallery or clip art and frames in picture it! I get a message that it can't find database and to reinstall works. I cannot get into calendar at all and get the following message:

Works cannot find one or more files it needs to run calendar. The files may have been renamed, deleated or moved. Try reinstalling works and then starting the program again.

I have tried reinstalling but it still doesn't work. I was also having problems with Roxio and could not burn cd's. It didn't work to reinstall at first either but then I was able to enter registration information and that fixed the problem.

Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

Hiya and welcome

When it says it cand find the database, can you post the full message, like the Calender one. For the calender issue, have a look at this:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303858

That may/may not help for those other issues you're having, with the clipart.
