I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

OK , having major difficulties getting these fixes to work. I have windows vista premium home, hjt will do the scan but halfway through says for some reason "your system denied write access to the Hosts file" I tried to set hjt to run as administrator but that is grayed out, so when I select "ok" it finishes the scan but no copy is posted in notepad. I did actually select a few known trash and it did remove them. dds appears to do its scan but doesn't post any results in notepad. And rootrepeal gives me a device controller error and wont scan. Does anyone have any suggesting on what to do? I did a system repair back to the 30 of December but that seemed to on reduce the popups.

We are running a VPN through a SonicWALL net extender. One of our users reports that she can access all her mapped drives while working remotely but one. This one shows up empty or with one folder, the rest of the data is not there. It there something
specific I could be missing for her to have this problem with only one of the mapped drives? I did not set the network up and I'm slowly learning how they set it up but if I could get a direction to look to fix this problem that would be great. Thanks.

I'm trying to reduce the clutter in Computer explorer window. I can't "Hide Empty Drives" so that all those little memory stick thingies don't show when they are empty. If anyone knows the secret I'd appreciate it.

Only good thing is I tried reenabling Shell Hardware Detection and as a reward my Seagate external USB drive now has an icon that looks just like it!! Whoopie!!!

Hallo MilesAhead, you could go into Disk Managment and remove the drive letter.

It will mean if you want to unhide you will just have to reassign a drive letter to it again

Hi. We have installed Windows 7 Pro in our school over the Summer. I have noticed several times that occasionally Window s7 maps the students home drive to \\server\%username%$ correctly but the homedrive is empty. Under my computer you can see that the P drive shows %username% on Server correctly. I have found that most of the time by disconnecting the P drive using net use p: /del and then reconnecting net use p: \\server\%username%$ it reconnects but not always. The home drives are located on a 2tb server drive and the mapped drive show that it is mapoped to an 80Gb FAT partition somewhere.

If I map a drive to the server that doesn't exist sat net use P \\server\notarealshare$ the P drive is still mapped and also appears to have an 80Gb FAT partition. I suspect that the mapped drive is not connecting to the server but I don't understand why. Any suggestions?

Several very important items you left out: Which version of Win7? (Must be a release candidate since retail version wasnt available until Oct 22nd 2009, and you said you installed over last summer.)
Where and how did you get Win7? (Since it was b4 release date)

I have tried every conceivable way to get Explorer to let me view my empty drives under Computer. They show when there's a disk in them. They show in the reading pane, they just won't show up as empty drives in the Nav pane. I have tried deleting the upper and lower filters in the registry. Un checking the "Hide empty drives" in Folder options, adding a (1) to the registry settting "Hide drives with no Media". That setting seems to change itself back to (0) all the time. I am totally at a loss getting the empty drives to show themselves in the Nav pane.

A:Empty drive partitions? How to add more drives?

Hello David, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Those partitions without drive letters on Disk 0 are for you Toshiba factory recovery. You do not want to mess with them. Doing so could leave you without a way to restore Windows back to factory conditions if needed.

If you like, you could use OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to shrink the C: partition by how much you want for a new partition, and create a logical partition with a drive letter.Partition / Extended : Logical Drives
Hope this helps,

This is a fresh install of Win7/64 after a HD crash requiring a new C:\ drive (for OS and programs). I opted for an Intel X25-M 80 GB SSD in place of the WD 740ADFD that failed.

I don't see my cd/dvd drives in Windows Explorer unless I put a disc in them and somehow prompt the system to look for it. This did not occur in my previous install of W7/64 on the Raptor. All the drives showed up in that installation. I don't understand the difference.

The media drives don't show up in Disk Management window but they do show up in the lower window and also show up in Device Manager. The K drive below is one of the drives from the internal card reader. They don't show up in WE either.

I have two sata drives (C and D) and the E drive is IDE. The two missing dvd drives are both internal sata drives.

I checked folder options and removed the check from hide empty drives, but no change.

Any suggestions?

Laptop Connects to Router but won't connect to Internet?
I have a big problem. I was watching a video and I noticed one of those pop-ups claiming that my computer was infected named "Anti-Malware Doctor/AV Security Suite." I ignored it. I then noticed that the software installed on my computer without my permission. So, I tried to uninstall it from my program list, would not work. I found a website that explained how to remove the unwanted software, www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/r? I followed the instructions and it removed the software but my internet wouldn't work. I tried doing several system restore points, but they all stated that they were unsuccessful. I even deleted the antivirus/malwarebytes software to see if that was interfering with the system restore, but it still did not work. The funny thing is everytime my computer connects to the router and I open an internet browser, everyone else that shares that router disconnects. When I disconnect from the network, the other computers automatically reconnect. I also notice when I try to connect to the internet, the modem restarts again. Also, when I open Firefox, it has the message:
The proxy server is refusing connections

Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.

I diagnose the connection and it says "There is a problem with your Domain Name Server Configuration" and it can't be repaired automatically.

A:C cleaner finds invalid or empty files in registry scan

While those are completely benign items and no harm will come from deleting them, DO NOT USE REGISTRY CLEANERS. Just ignore what ccleaner found and don't bother to scan again. So called registry cleaners cause problems, they do not cure or fix anything.

Hi, I have a oldish acer lap top running windows vista and has two dual hard drives (30 gig a piece). I use the C: drive for programs and try keep all data and media on the D: drive. Both have obviously been quite full so I recently invested in an external harddrive and then cut and pasted pretty much everything from the D: drive into the external hard drive. Leaving the D: all but empty. The problem now however, is that while I have plently of space on the my D: drive the C: drive remains very full (less than 10% free) and I dont know what to move if anything. Furthermore I have been through the programs files looking for un-needed files, uninstalled unused programs, done a disk clean up and defrag and still I have less than 10% room. I cant even work out what is taking up all the space. Someone please help me

A:Dual Hard Drives, One Full, One Empty

You can use a partition utility to expand the "C:\" partition to fill the entire hard drive; the laptop has one physical hard drive split into two partitions. Here's one such free tool: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/pm-express/

Be aware that if your only copy of the data is on the external drive then you have left yourself very prone to data loss if the drive fails; drives fail very frequently. You should have at least two copies of all important data.

My 4-slot card reader displays as four drives whether populated or empty. This once seemed as too minor an issue to post on this forum, until the Disk Mgmt showed only three available drive letters for new drive assignments.

When external spin backups are powered-down, the Mgr still considers those spin drive letters as assigned; leaving only a few drive letters available.

How can I remove these card reader slots (as drives) from DiskMgmt & DeviceMgr when card reader slots are empty? I have two readers, but keep one disconnected for this reason.

A:Empty Card Reader appears as four drives?

By default, Windows does not show these drives in Explorer until you insert the memory card. To display these drives anyway, go to the Folder options, and in the view tab under Hidden Files, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives.

It is recommended that you leave the Hidden Files setting alone, unless you work around with hidden files, or at least until someone else says so when troubleshooting issues with BSODs or malware.

In My Computer the empty removable drives are visible but grayed out. I'd rather not see them at all if they are empty. The only empty drive I want visible in the DVD drive.

Is there a way to fix it? In Vista it works correctly but W7 it wants to show them grayed.

A:Empty Removable Drives showing grayed out

Hmm, grayed out would seem to indicated that it is showing the empty drive letters for a memory card reader instead of hiding them. You might try one of the other options in the tutorial to hide them to see if it may work better.

UI guess because drive is automatically removed then a drive is empty.

How can I prevent this auto-closing resp. show the drive letter even if the drive is empty?

Your effectively removing a drive so when you press the eject it will close IE as the drive is not there. I tried it and it does the same.

I have an on going issue with accessing my computer and thumbnails/icons failing to show. This has been happening for the last few weeks.

The first screen shot attached shows some details of my system and the problem at hand:

Everything seems to work fine after a fresh start up but after a short while, if i open my computer it shows up blank with a green bar that never reaches the end and a magnifying glass icon on each of the shortcut folders (favorites, libraries..).

In addition to this, if i access a folder by typing in the path or using another shortcut, all thumbnails and icons of files in that folder are missing.

If I end explorer and restart the process, it becomes worse and I'm unable to even access my computer or the control panel. Instead I get the following message:

::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683}
The remote procedure call failed and did not execute.

However, if I restart the computer or even just log on and off, the problem goes away, but only temporally.

I have tried a system restore a while back to a point before the problem was apparent.
This did not fix it.

Has anyone else come across this and/or can help me please?!

I currently have 4 external hard drives connected to my computer. I have each of them set to sleep after an hour of inactivity. However, if I am using the computer, they stay asleep, until I delete something; anything. Any time I send something to the recycle bin, all four of my external hard drives wake up.

I would like for this not to happen. I already went to the Recycle Bin Properties and set each external hard drive to "Don't move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" thinking that it would quit checking them for deleted files.

I would much appreciate any help on how to prevent these external hard drives from turning on when I delete files off of my computer. And just to be clear, I am NOT deleting files that are on the externals, they are files that are on the Computer.

I use these forums a lot when I have a question, but I have never had the need to post before, so this is my first post. If this is in the incorrect sub-forum, I apologize.

A:External Hard Drives Wake Up When I Empty Recycle Bin

I have EXACTLY the same issue, it's unfortunate no one replied to this

I also set all my drives to "Don't move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" and everytime I delete a file anywhere ALL external my drives wake up

Is there really no way around this? Is no one else having this issue? Does no one else have an external drive attached to his PC that he wants to sleep while idle? Why is Windows checking ALL the RECYCLE.BIN folders on ALL drives when I delete a file on ONE drive?

It would be really great if someone knew something about this, preferrably some way around this, so the drives can stay asleep when I do not intend to access them but just delete a file on a different drive.

Okay, here's my problem:
My hard drive is failing. It's under warranty and can be replaced.
I had an AVI capture from my camcorder that was several Gb, but is now marked at 0 kb.
Undelete software does not help as the file has not been deleted, but truncated to 0 kb.
I know in theory the data is recoverable.

Here's my theory:
Make an image of the whole hard drive, some 200 Gb.
Put this image on my PC at work and somehow scan this image and extract all video content.
Is there an application that will rip all video content from a large file that contains other "junk"?

Thanks in advance.

A:Recover corrupt AVI scan/rip ?

I assume the original avi file was captured on tape---Why not just get a new drive, and capture to the new drive---Why go through all the other nonsense.

Ok i did a bit of searching and found that running sfc/scannow in command prompt would display any errors as ive been getting non responsive programs and crashing computer for a few days now.
It finished and said this:
Ive tried to access the file but it says access is denied. I am the admin and only user on this computer so not sure why.
Any ideas what to do next??

A:Scan revealed corrupt files. . .what next?

Hi wales,

Try running it again; sometimes it takes more than one pass.

If there are still corrupt files, see How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7.

If you can't locate a good copy of a corrupted file, post back with details of the file(s).

Right click at Start button > click Command Prompt (Admin) > at the flashing prompt, copy/paste this.......
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

> press Enter.
It will take some time.
When it is finished, it will give you the report.

There is a chance you get the error code and message that " sources file could not be found ".
If that happens, please post back. There is a way to fix that.

hi i have run the sfc scan 3 times each time it says it has fixed files? yet when i run again it says it has corrupt files?

see enclosed sfc scan results txt file ?

is something beyond repair or is there just lots of corrupt files and sfc can only do so many at a time so has to be re-run until there all done?

A:sfc/scan run 3 times still corrupt files?

The System File Checker (SFC) can only repair files that are in the mirror. And those are only the most important files. For a better resule you have to run a startup/repair with your installation/repair disc. That has a bigger inventory of files.

But even then there may be files that cannot be repaired - e.g. ,dlls that came with program installations that were not on the original installation disc but which were installed from the web.

On opening the Task Scheduler I get a message " Task MP scheduled Scan. Task image is corrupt or has been tampered with ". I look in Library, Microsoft, Windows Defender and the Task MP Scheduler is not there. Real time protection appears to be working and I can do a manual scan through the control panel. Can I download a replacement Windows Defender file or can I fix what I have now without using Refresh or Recovery.

As an afterthought, is it possible to recreate the task in the library and please provide a snapshot of what it may look like

Hello

My latop has been turned itself off about 8 times today so I did a bit of reading on the forums and one of the things that was suggested was run the sfc /scannow command. The output says that it was unable to fix teh corrupted files that it had found and deposited the results of this scan in the CBS.log file.

This is the CBS.log file:-

A:results of my sfc /scannow scan saying can't fix corrupt files. Help!

Welcome
To try and correct the shutdown problems
Run the SFC three times if errors are found. If they are not repaired, go to event viewer (type that in search, by the start menu) and go to the left panel, Administrative and look for errors.

Run a full anti virus scan
Download and run a full scan with malwarebytes.

Make sure that you are not overheating, shutting down is a classic symptom.
Download and run speed fan to check tempsl

If that does not help
Test memory

If nothing seems to help a repair install should do the trick, unless it is caused by hardware problems.

A pre-scheduled scan of my pc was conducted today. It returned an indication that I have a ?Potentially Unwanted Program.? The item name is Corrupt-EP. McAfee indicated the status is ?Detected.? In the Details panel of the Scan Results (under ?Items?), McAfee shows the following path: Fine Name: C:\Users\Don\Desktop\456\Dell\drivers\R200272/00010001.dir. Also in the Details panel a link is provided for me to learn more about Corrupt-EP. Clicking on that link brought me to a McAfee webpage (http://home.mcafee.com/VirusInfo/VirusProfile.aspx?key=248985) which was not very helpful. It said that the risk assessment is N/A, date discovered was 12/16/2009, type is Program, and DAT Required is 5834.

As background, I recently had Dell try to recover some files that I had accidentally deleted (and they were not in the Recycle Bin.) They installed a number of programs in this attempt, operating my pc remotely. They were only able to retrieve a small number of files. At the conclusions of Dell?s efforts, they uninstalled all of the programs that they used in this process. This is the first McAfee scan conducted since Dell?s efforts.

Using Windows Explorer, I tried to view the path indicated above. I could not find ?456? in the described path. I seem to recall that the Dell technician working on my problem did create a folder labeled ?456? on my desktop during her efforts. It is not visible now on the desktop, either.
