Does Vista download updates during its installation?

Q: Does Vista download updates during its installation?

Hello all, I have always wondered if Vista's setup downloads any patches or updates during its installation process? Or does it need access to the internet for any reason? I have always installed Vista connected to the LAN , just in case.. Any ideas?

Preferred Solution: Does Vista download updates during its installation?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Does Vista download updates during its installation?

Vista installs as is, then updates itself.
The reason for this is because Vista would need a stable OS to perform updates, this can only be accomplished once it is installed.

Hi. I have Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit OEM (with free Windows 7 upgrade). I want to reformat the computer. After installing Vista, do I need to download Vista updates, before installing Windows 7?

Or just immediately install Windows 7 after Vista?

Also, how often do you do a fresh install (reformat)?

Thank you

A:Vista to 7 upgrade (download Vista updates?)

I never heard of anyone having to update Vista first.

Assuming you have the Windows 7 disk, you don't even need to have Vista installed at all.

If you are lucky, you will never have to do another fresh install. Good maintenance is the way to avoid having to do that.

This problem started Feb 13, 2008. Since then there have been many updates that just will not download. The odd thing is, there have been some listed as Optional and even a few listed as Important since then that have been able to download.

I googled it a bit and found that date/time can throw it off. I updated it and changed the server from which the date and time updates are received - still no change.

What should I do now?

A:Cannot download updates for Vista

Have you tried downloading the updates manually via the Microsoft website?
I.e. find the update in windows update, then google it, and a link should be shown to it on the Microsoft site. Try downloading it that way.
Also, have you got Vista servicepack 2? I had a problem where that had to be downloaded first, which then 'unlocked' other updates.

Hi Guys, Windows 7 security updates does not download, if showing N number of updates, it won't

This problem has found in Windows 7 Ent and Windows

story, because GP options are enforced. There is no WSUS or patch management software yet on network. <o:p></o:p>
I am purely looking for an answer for this problem of Windows Update either not initiating at all if ever it is showing number of updates to be installed,

Hello All,

I have this issue were I get the message "windows cannot update".

I spoke with Microsoft Windows support, they couldnt fix it, even with remote access.

I spoke to HP, the manufacturer, they couldnt fix it, even with remote access.

They both said I had to reinstall with "Image setup", It didnt come with disks, just the Image setup file?

I bought it new about a year or so ago, its "dual core processor" 500 Gb hard drive, 4gigs ram etc.

I find it hard believe, that it can't be "reset", (adjust the settings) without reinstall.

I dont want to loose all marketing the data etc., I have on the HD

Any suggestion, anyone heard or dealt with something like this?, any ideas?

would appreciate some advice, and direction

Thanks
Frank

I have what seems to be a fairly common problem with Vista, I cannot download or install any updates. I have not been able to download any updates for a long time.

I have Vista Service Pack 1 installed, in the Vista home edition that came loaded on my PC by Dell. But I cannot install Service Pack 2. Since I can't download ANYTHING using automatic update, I downloaded the standalone Service Pack 2. When I try to install it I get as far as about 40% installed of section one of the download before I get an error message that says "Install failed, reverting changes" and so I end up with nothing installed.

I have tried turning off my antivirus programs and my firewalls but that doesn't help.

Thanks in advance for you assistance it is very much appreciated.

I'm using a Toshiba Laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2. The computer is used only occasionally and, when opened, it usually downloads numerous Windows updates and installs them automatically. Before today, the last updates (84) were installed 7/26/2015, before that on 6/10/2015 5 updates were installed, before that on 5/24/2015 19 updates were installed. Today when the computer was opened, Windows tried to find and download updates and ran continuously without downloading any updates. I ran the Windows Update troubleshooter and it fixed some problems but also reported discrepancies that it could not fix (Error 0x80070057(2015-09-20-T-03_12_40P). I installed Hotfix for Windows (KB947821) apparently without results. I ran chkdsk and sfc scannow. The log produced after scannow, said "Access Denied when I tried to open it. I have the SR tagged lines in the log file from C:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log which appears to show that several lines have discrepancies which were not fixed. I have no idea how to repair them.

Now the good news. After multiple restarts in the processes described above, Windows Update found, downloaded and installed 42 updates. Upon shutdown and restart it finished the installation of three of them and all appear to be current.

Now the however, Windows update troubleshooter still reports two "not fixed" errors: "Windows update error 0x80070057(2015-09-20-T-10_39_56P)" and "Problems installing recent updates."

Recently I had to re-install Vista on my machine. To my surprise even after installing 3 times update problems majorly 8024200D were there. So, I searched here n there on net including this forum but of no process worked. Hence, I decided to go for another installation. Here I will be discussing what I have observed:-

1) Installation : Something changed from Microsoft hence please install Vista as fresh and do not install any driver and/or application except LAN Drivers otherwise, you will face too many error messages during updates. Even after installing LAN driver you might get error# 80070103 but you may ignore this as this is only due to old drivers error.

2) Update : Keep updating your windows till it says no further update available. Please do not use internet except updating your windows otherwise your PC might get infected.

Surprisingly, Original Windows Vista DVD (without Sp1 or SP2) is of around 4GB and updates are of around 2GB and it will take minimum half a day to update your system 100% with good internet speed (minimum 2MBPS).

SP1 is of around 750MB and SP2 is of around 350MB and rest updates are of around 1GB+.

If you have to re-install your OS once or twice a year then you should make image of your system otherwise, updates gonna increase in future and you will be spending hell of the time in updations.

Hello and welcome to the vista forums.

I am going to assume that you have the full version of winds. Since you have done 3 installs I would suggest doing one more but like this.
Clean Install with a Full Version of Vista

I would do a full scan with your AV...
Download and run a full scan from malwarebytes free version...

I would aslo do a sfc scan and here's how...
System Files - SFC Command
If the sfc comes back with problems then run the sfc 3 times, the sfc scan can fix many problems on your computer...

You might also want to do a CHKDSK on your system and her's how to do this one.
Check Disk - chkdsk

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Not sure a in-place upgrade is even possible if you need new installation media you can use this to get it easily

Personally I would clean install,
It's a lot easier to clean install these days with the unofficial sp2
There are essentially 3 updates needed for a clean install of windows that will get you updated through April of 2016

KB3020369 & KB3172605 & KB3125574 all can be downloaded from the M$ catalog using internet explorer
Microsoft Update Catalog

https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/...ows-7-and-8-1/
When manually installing updates you need to switch your update settings to Never check for updates and restart the machine first.

After restart you will need to ensure the built in windows update service is stopped and set to manual first too or it will conflict with the stand alone installer.

Afterwards reset the windows updates service to what it was before and update settings to your preference and check for updates
Should be only 50 or so updates left to install.

I also have the three required updates on my OneDrive if you can't or don't want to deal with the catalog,

I have a new Dell Dimension Desktop that came with Windows Vista Home basic. At first everything was fine, but now it is running EXTREMELY slowly. I thought maybe it could be infected with a virus or something, so I ran a scan with Norton security. The scan came back and didn't find anything, not even one cookie, so I know it didn't scan properly. Then a thing came up and said Norton needed to download updates, so I clicked OK to get the updates. However, my computer will NOT download them! The connection either times out or the updates get to a certain point, about 65%, and then just never finish. Why can't I download the updates? Why is Vista so slow? Its driving me CRAZY!!!

A:Extremely Slow Operation With Vista. Also, Will Not Download Updates For My Norton Security

Hello!

Sorry to hear about that. I work for Tier 3 at T-Mobile, and we handle all the data aspects of the company. 80% of our business is working with laptops/desktops and a lot of calls coming in are on Vista. What I, and my co-workers have personally noticed is that Windows Vista Home Basic, is crap. That's the clean, unfiltered truth. I personally have Home Premium, and I've had my fair share of problems with it, but I can just imagine the thousands of frustrated people with Basic. So, I highly recommend downgrading (in my opinion upgrading) to XP Pro. If that's not an option, upgrade to Premium. If that's not an option you can look at all the different settings to see if you can smooth things up a bit.

First, check Start - then type in MSCONFIG in the search box. Then, go to the services tab. Click on the box listed "hide all microsoft services". Then, disable all. This will disable all services from running besides microsofts that are required to run your comp. You can browse through the list for spyware and anti-virus that you want to run. Then, go to the startup tab and disable all there, and again, go through the list to see if theres anything specific you really want/need to startup when your comp starts up. Then click ok, and restart. This will make it so your computer doesn't load unneccasary programs at startup that can make your computer lag. I believe vista automatically has defrag set up to do it in the background, but just in case you can do i... Read more

After searching through multiple forums and trying to download windows utility cleaner, etc - nothing has helped. Also, if I try to run the 'Check for Updates" link on my computer - if NEVER stops searching for updates and there for I cant update anything. Not sure where to start

A:Windows Check for updates keeps running-all installation/updates fail

Let's start with the easy stuff

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

I'm trying to download updates through Windows Update, it shows that I have 139 important updates, and 40 optional ones. I selected them and clicked the install button but it got stuck at "Downloading updates (0 kb total, 0% complete)". I cancelled and retried choosing only 24 important updates and the same happened. I tried the check for updates option but it also keeps checking forever.
I also tried downloading updates from Microsoft Download Center but when I try to install them it hangs on "searching for updates on this computer".
I already ran the Microsoft Fix It tool, disabled my anti-virus and firewall, but nothing works.
I cannot install the SURT because it also keeps searching for updates.

I need to update so I can upgrade to Windows 10 - the setup also got stuck while checking for updates, so I was hoping that updating beforehand would do the trick.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem are appreciated.

I want to upgrade my Acer Aspire Notebook from Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 32-bit to Windows 7 SP1 32-bit.  It qualifies for the "Supported Upgrade Scenerios" and my system passed the Windows 7 install compatibility test.  I found
the Windows 7 download page, but when I enter the Microsoft Product Key on the back of my Acer Aspire Notebook it doesn't accept it.
How do I resolve this problem?  I can't get Chat to work (loops me back to automated system) and I can't find a email or phone number for Microsoft to assist me.
Please help.  Thank you.
TO CLARIFY: Entering the product key on the microsoft windows 7 download page in order to do the download is where the key fails, not during installation.  I can't even get past the download approval.

Hi Guys,

I have a problem installing Windows Vista. The installation process works fine until after the 1st reboot that goes to "completing installation". It completely freezes at that point and after 1 hour or so goes to a black screen where i can see nothing but my mouse pointer.

I just got my laptop 2 days ago and it's brand new Vista compatible. In fact it came with Vista installed and it was working perfectly fine until I decided to reformat it so that I could check if my new hd i tried installing was the main reason for this installation failure.

I saw a post with similar problems explaining that the BIOS was in need to be updated, but my BIOS is up to date and vista compatible.

My laptop specs are as follows:

Inspiron 1720, Intel Core 2 Duo T7500, 2.2GHz, 800Mhz, 4M L2 Cache

Can someone please help me out! Thanks.

Hello, I'm having an issue installing a clean install of Windows Vista Home Basic onto my friend's Acer laptop.

To start off, my friend has had a rouge anti virus that more or less destroyed his windows. After doing a system restore for the earliest date available, the virus was gone, but Windows kept asking me on how to open simple things such as Internet Explorer and various other programs, which made the OS unusable. My friend gave me permission to format the drive, and I reinstalled Vista with a DVD of my I had for from one of my PCs, but I used his CD key that was on the laptop. The installation went fine, so I went on my desktop PC and downloaded all of the drivers for his laptop (Aspire 5516), and then installed a sound card driver, and a BIOs update. After the BIOs update, the laptop wouldn't start up again. I tried doing a system restore but it had no restore points, so since I just started, I figured doing a quick format wouldn't hurt.

This is where things got bad. I've tried reinstalling Vista again, but it keeps hanging on the "Completing installation" part. I've tried three times so far, and it always hangs at the exact same part, and now I have no clue on what to do.

Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated, thank you.

A:Vista installation hangs on completing installation during clean install

Hi ssjChris. Welcome to TSF!

I would suggest you download a copy of Darik's Boot and Nuke (affectionately known as DBAN) HERE and create a bootable CD with it. Then boot with that CD and do a low-level format. That will insure that you don't have all kinds of wonderful dangling stuff on the hard drive. A Windows format doesn't do a low-level format to the extent that DBAN does. Pay VERY close attention to the menus as you use this software as it is very powerful. If you have any external hard drives connected, I suggest you disconnect them.

Once it completes, try your installation again.

Good day!

Mike

Okay, so let me first tell you that I am in a state of panic. I have very important data on my HDD and am unable to boot any OS on it now.

I initially had Vista and 7 on it, working, until I decided to uninstall 7 for XP. I deleted the partition 7 was on (C; my primary partition) and installed XP onto it. That went smoothly and all, but after booting it up I noticed it wouldn't let me specify which OS I wanted to start; it would just auto start XP. I went into the bootup settings in XP and changed the time operating systems are displayed from one second, to ten, yet it still just auto-booted XP. I was able to access the data on the other partition in the XP explorer, but seemingly wasn't able to boot from it. So I "backed up" all my data onto a third partition I had created as a failsafe in case something went wrong and I couldn't boot either of my OSes.

It then came to my attention that I had installed Windows XP Professional instead of home edition, so I made a bootable CD with the XP iso and restarted the computer for reinstallation. According to the program, the setup files copied over fine and all, but when it auto-restarted to continue the installation process it would just loop on and off at the BIOS screen. After trying 4 different versions of XP to no avail, I stuck my Vista Home Premium disk in and booted from it. Again, I got to the setup screen and all that jazz, but when prompted to select the location I wanted to install Windows in, I go... Read more

I have been trying to install windows Vista 64 bit edition on my computer for the past couple of days now and I can seem to get to work right. It works normally right up until it reaches the completing installation phase the it freezes. I test my memory and hard drive and they are both fine. I have even tried different components just in case but nothing has helped. I upgraded the motherboad bios and tried a IDE and a SATA drive as well.
Here are my computer's specifictions

2GB of Dual Channel OCZ Gold PC6400 DDR2 Memory
500GB Maxtor Hard Drive

I kind of wondering about the motherboard if it has compatiblity issues with Vista but every where I look it says its go to go as long as you upgrade the BIOS which I've done. Any ideas on how to fix this issue or should I consider getting a different board? I need a PCI Express 4X slot on the new one. Thanks for the help.

Since Jan 11 2017, My HP Win-7 (Home) laptop has not been able to download ANY new Windows Updates. It just starts searching for Updates, but NEVER finds any. Prior to this, Win-7 Updates downloaded and installed fine for years.
I have tried it manually, or with a set time with no help.

I see many people have posted on the Web this same problem, and have tried some of the recommended fixes, but have had no success.

My HP Win-7 Pro Desktop continues to download and Install updates just fine.

Any help is appreciated ....

A:Can't Download Win-7 updates

Every time I have run across a failed Win 7 update issue, the two patches that fixed it every time were KB3020369 and then KB3172605. If you run the patch and it sits at checking for updates when you run it, kill the wusa task, then stop and start the update service. Run the patch again, it will install.

I recently had a friend reinstalled XP Pro on my computer because it would not log into windows, after the log in screen it would go black and not come back. prior to that I could log on but I noticed an unusualy low number of processes running in task manager. I also observed the little yellow light on the tower wouldn't be blinking so something was causing my processor to stop. What my friend did was run the pro disk to re install windows without losing my files. I remember while load avg free 20011 it would get to approx. 83% and freeze, so we had to repeat it 3 times. Shortly there after my wife noticed that she couldn't access IExplorer so I checked it out and it shut down saying Internet Explorer has encountered a problem....Error Signature App name iexplore.exe app version 6.0.290.5512 modname ieframe.dll modver: 7.0.6000.17093 offset: 000744ab

System manufacturer and model?

Did the CD used...contain the same SP as was installed on the system at that time?

I presume it wouldn't duplicate any registry entries if run at every startup...?

I've been trying to download the latest Windows Live Messenger on my dad's computer (my laptop was stolen recently so I'm forced to use this) and for some reason, it won't work. I'm using Windows XP.

I tried going to the main website to download it but every time I click on the download button, it kept saying "Server not found", as though I'm not online when I clearly am. The same thing is happening to my dad's AVG anti-virus. It can't seem to update itself. I tried updating my windows but I can't seem to access the site as well.

Is this a virus or is there something wrong with the settings on this computer? Can anyone help me?

A:Can't download updates

I am setup to be informed about updates but download and install them manually. Recently I experienced problems on all 3 computers I have (1 desktop and 2 laptops). Everything is as usual until I press the install button. Beyond this point, Windows says it is downloading the updates but nothing gets downloaded. Microsoft no longer provides free assistance with update problems (I could not find the contact information for this service). The web has number of discussions on this topic and number of 'solutions' that take a lot of time to work through but do not work. Here is a workaround that works for me:

(1) Stop the Windows update service.
(2) Empty the SoftwareDistribution folder in Windows directory
(3) Restart the computer to automatically start the Windows update service
(4) Go to Windows Update web page, which now says that updates have never been performed
(5) Wait for a long time until the webpage identifies the updates I need
(6) Install the updates - this time, they download normally and install normally

Updating 3 computers is a pain even when there is no download problem. This pain is multiplied by having to perform the above operation three times. Should someone know what causes the update download problem I just described and have a simpler fix for it, I would love to be informed of such solution. Meanwhile, I am communicating my workaround which also comes from the web and which took a considerable trial and error effort to identify as being effec... Read more

I was checking the update history and there are so many security updates that failed, I didn't want to count them! The error code is 3800700003. I tried Mr. Fix-It. I tried the Troubleshooter. I even followed the instructions to delete the temporary files like the error code said, but when I got to the final step the to delete the files in the Software Distribution folder, it said they were tied up in the Administration something or other and couldn't be deleted.

Also, I had gone another route with the Event Viewer and saw there were many events but I don't know what that means anyway. These all said they were "friendly", so how could they do any harm? I had stopped the updater, but after I couldn't delete the temporary files like it told me to, I turned automatic updates back on. If I have to send this to a computer shop, they start out at about $90.00.

Can anybody point me in the right direction. I'll never be able to upgrade to Windows 10, otherwise.

A:Updates just won't download

Welcome to TSF!

Try deleting the files in the Software Distribution folder after booting the computer up in Safe mode.

I am looking for a way to download Windows XP updates to a CD. The reason is I am working on my sister's computer which says she needs many updates, including Windows XP Service Pack 2. She uses dial up and one download can take hours. My computer is on cable hookup and downloads quickly. I would like to download the updates to a cd and transfer to her computer. However, going to the download sites requires it searching my system which doesn't match. I run Win98. Does anyone know how I can get these updates? Thank you.

I have 3 computers (2 laptop wireless, 1 desktop wired, all XP Pro) all 3 will not download updates for Windows, anti-virus, anti-malwre, even new programs. I can visit all websites fine and computers are not slowed. The only exception is applications on facebook (farmville, cafe world, etc...not something I use, BTW) which will not load. In each instance, the download will begin but stop after a few seconds and just sit. Sometimes I will get "connection to server was interrupted."

First thought was virus/trojan/worm but all scans came up with nothing so I did a clean install of XP on my desktop. Same problem as soon as I got connected. I took the laptops to a friends network and it worked perfect. Fast, updated everything, all apps work on facebook. So I think it has to be my internet. I call AT&T they run all kinds of test and come up with nothing assuring me it is either my computer or modem.

I switched modems with my friend, whose network my laptops worked on, but it still does the exact same thing. I am at a loss...anyone with any ideas?

Have been unable to download Windows XP updates for 2-3 weeks - was hoping it would fix itself. Have downloaded "Microsoft Fix it Center" but the instructions on how to repair are not clear and have tried to input the DOS (command prompts) guide but there is an error in the formatting. Hi, Quite some time ago, when the windows 10 was rolled out, my laptop started malfunctioning (performance made a huge drop). I didn't install windows 10, because the laptop didn't meet the hardware requirements. Still windows kept prompting me to download it. I didn't care much, because it's an older laptop (i think pre 2007) and didn't use it very often. I'm in a situation where i need 2 laptops now, though, so this is a problem... Anyway, my laptop simply won't download updates anymore... i select all the updates (30+ by now...), click download and install, the process starts but stays at 0% downloaded... I've tried system restore, deep virus scans and trying to download them 1 by 1, but to no avail... Can any1 shine some light on this situation? what do i do to fix this? My laptop refuses to connect to password protected wifi signals for some reason and it's bugging the hell out of me. DxDiag:------------------System Information------------------Time of this report: 9/7/2016, 20:44:53Machine name: SANDER-HPOperating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_ldr.160317-0600)Language: Dutch (Regional Setting: Dutch)System Manufacturer: Hewlett-PackardSystem Model: HP Pavilion g7 Notebook PCBIOS: Default System BIOSProcessor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 380 @ 2.53GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.5GHzMemory: 4096MB RAMAvailable OS Memory: 3894MB RAMPage File: 2430MB used, 5355MB availableWindows Dir: C:\WindowsDirectX Version... Windows update says it has a number of update files, but when I hit download, it "pretends to be doing it" -- but there is no progress in the status bar - stays 0%. I have tried "fix it" - I have tried requesting download of only 1 file
-- still have the problem. Discovered none have downloaded since February.

Win 7 updates keep coming but will not download. I do not own the win 7 o/s disk, cannot re-load.
When I restart pc, warning says loading 2 of 3 updates, but after 2 hours nothing changes. I have to manually turn off pc and then turn it back on.

A:Win 7 updates will not download

1) Is this a new situation or has it always been this way?
2) If it's new, what is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?
3) Do you have an legitimate Windows 7 installation?
