Preferred Solution: Opened a file with word pad now all are word pad files!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have many WP8 files I created that when I try to open them, they give the "convert from MS word 97" dialog box, and when I say ok, fine, I just get "illegal operation" and the program shuts down.

they were created in wp; why can't I just open them in wp? Why are they asking to be converted from ms word? Is there something I can do about this?

thanks

So when i open any file like a PDF or something, it's automatically opened as an excel document when i want it to be word. I've already tried setting word as a default app but it still doesn't work.
Also, i tried going to the downloaded files and pressed 'open documents like this with word from now on' but afterwards when i open that same file it still opens in excel. Can someone please help me, i have to print stuff for school but I can't because of this.

A:All my files are opened as excel instead of word

Well you can Print in the interim. Instead of pushing a file to an application via its File Association, you can always open the Application and then open the document and print it.

So if you try to open a PDF, DOC, DOCx, and others they are all associated to MS Excel ?

Did you Right-Click on a PDF file and choose "Open With" ---> Choose Default Program
And set it back to Adobe Reader ( or whatever PDF viewer you use ) ?

likewise...

Did you Right-Click on a DOC and DOCx files and choose "Open With" ---> Choose Default Program
And set it back to Microsoft Word ?

Additionally...
Did you go to Control Panel and use the Default Programs applet and then choose "Set your Default Program" and then choose the Program like Adobe Reader, Microsoft Word and have it "Set this program as default" ?

Hello,

I am currently studying for an Amazon Web Services (AWS) certificaiton. I need to use their assigned private keys to log-in to VMs. These private keys are given as .pem files and in a program called PuttyGen I convert them into .ppk files so I can use them on Putty.

I accidentally opened one of these .ppk files in Word. Now all .ppk files are saved as Word Docs and I cannot get them to save the way they did before. Please anyone let me know how to fix this. Urgent!!!!!

Alright here is the case. I open up MS Word and of coarse you get a blank page. But when you try and open a word file it displays the picture as shown below (first picture). Now when i try and close MS Word, an event happens as shown by the second picture. I click no and yep, you get the third picture. I then cancel this window and i end up back into word, just minus the blank page or open file. Trying to close MS Word again i get the fourth picture and I click no, which now closes word. Overall I just want to be able open a file, and close MS Word without these problems. The fourth picture shows what programs are running in the system tray.

Was Office loaded on that machine at work?
If so it is my guess that one of two things is happening.

1) The Office dll that displays pictures is resident on the work network and is only loaded when it is needed - thus displaying that message.

2) A similar thing with the document that just the link (and thumbnail) to the pictures were included in the document. The actual pictures are still on the network.

Hi Guys - I'm new to this site and not very tech savvy or sure of which forum topic to post this under. If I'm not posting under the right topic please let me know which topic thread would be more suitable.

I run Word 2007 on Windows 7. I recently had a virus hide all my documents and programs - the virus has been removed but it has changed things around.

I cannot open the word documents I have stored in My Docs. All the icons next to the name of the word files are showing up as a little orange page - when I click on the file name, a Microsoft Office 2010 window comes up which says "The Microsoft Office Product needed to open this file is not installed on your computer". And then it has the invitation to purchase Office 2010.
Does anyone know what's going on here with this and know how I can rectify this & change this back somehow so I can open & read these docs in Word 2007 again?

I can open Word 2007 and make a new document and save it but if I go to open it again it has been converted into this other file with the orange page icon and I cannot open it.

(I can open & save in wordpad - the wordpad doc can be saved in My Docs and it will reopen so I can read it again. Also my music, picture and video files all open ok.)

I am having a goofy problem with .doc and .xls files. If I attempt to open them from either Windows Explorer or My computer, I get the "This file is already open" error but then you can then change the file and save it.
However, I can then execute the application and open the file from within the app, it works fine and doesn't give the error.
Any help would be appreciated. I have found traces of this error on the internet but have not found any satisfactory solutions to it. Thanks

I've got some strange behavior going on with .doc files at the moment. Whenever I try to open a .doc file from Windows Explorer or a desktop shortcut, Word opens with the error message "Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions. * Check the file permissions for the document or drive. *Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space. *Open the file with the Text Recovery converter."

After clicking OK, the .doc file then opens in Word, apparently with no problems at all (I can edit, save, etc.). So basically the error message seems to be wrong, since the file does open properly.

I can open .doc files from within Word (File -> Open) with no error message.

The issue is more of an annoyance than anything else (since the file eventually opens up just fine), but I imagine it'll just become more irritating as time goes on. Any suggestions on how to resolve it? I've been poking around in the Folder Options -> File Types in Explorer without a clear sense of purpose.

I'm running MS Word 2003 SP3 on Windows XP Service Pack 3. If you need any further info, please let me know.

Thanks for your help!

Hello all,

I have been presented with a project that involves Forms that I am not able
to resolve.

Basically I have been asked to create a document template where other team
members can fill out a form that asks a series of questions, then to have
only the completed form results export to a new file.

I am aware that Word can export the form results to a text file, but when I
do this all of the questions that were on the original form are exported to
the new file.

What we are looking to achieve in the end:
If the end user is faced with 20 questions, but only 12 of the questions
pertain to the end users project, only the 12 completed form fields will
export to a new file.

I know that this should be possible with using a macro button to export the data, but that is where I need the help.

I tried searching for this exact situation, but I did not find any matches, hence the new thread.

Thank you in advance,

Bill

I recently installed Office 2007 on a new Vista 64 bit system. I was unable to install my previous version of WordPerfect Office 12. When using WP on my previous Windows XP system, I was able to go into the word processor, click open, go to the wp folder (where I kept all my documents) and do a search based on a particular word I was looking for. For example, I could type in the word "hebrew" in the files box and each document file that contained that word (not only in the file name but in the contents of the file) was listed. I could then preview the contents of each document file and open the one I wanted.

Does this feature work in Word 2007 under Vista 64? I have only been able to find a file name with the word I type, even though I know many other document files contain the word I type in the files box. This has been very frustrating because it means I have to preview every file to find the one I want rather than just the files with the typed word in its contents.

Thank you for your time in this matter.

This is one of the weirder things I've ever seen happening in MS-Word.

The file in question is a book manuscript that was created in Word 2007.  The individual who wrote the book happens to be blind, but is a friend of mine, and even she knew something was "off" without being able to see it.

She sent me a copy of the original .doc format file and also one in .docx format.   In both, the entire document has the text right justified, but, and here's the important part, Word is showing the document as left justified no matter where you place yourself in it.

If I do a select all, then hit the right justify button the entire document left justifies.

Since this manuscript will be submitted to a publisher it would be helpful if it were working as virtually every other MS-Word document works as far as justification goes.  Neither of us has ever encountered this before.

I figure that someone must have had this happen to them and probably knows what one must do to fix it.  Any and all assistance will be most appreciated.

A:Weird MS-Word Situation - File Created in Word 2007

@britechguy
I ran across a similar situation using Word '97 many moons ago. I had found and used a template which contained pre-formatted content that did not cooperate with the changes I wanted to make. This worked for me.
A word of caution as you probably already realize, you will lose all formatting of the original .doc / .docx so it may involve some work replicating the format of the original .doc / .docx.
Make sure your original .doc /.docx is saved

Open the original .doc / .docx
Open an instance of Windows Notepad
Copy/paste the text from the saved .doc / .docx into Windows Notepad.
Open a New blank Word Document
Copy/paste the text from Windows Notepad into the New Word Document
You should now have full control of your New Word Document
By saving the original, you can replicate the necessary changes (fonts, colors etc.) lost by copy / paste to Windows Notepad

Hope this helps

I recently had a really discouraging problem, where a ton of very special files I'd spent weeks working on, refused to open in either word perfect 8 (in which they'd been created) or ms word from office xp suite. I would either get a message in word perfect about an "unsupported format," or it would try to suggest i open them in ms word 97, and then fail. In word, the doc would open, but be in total gibberish. I tried opening them on different machines, different os's, everything.

I have since been able to recover the original docs from my laptop and I'm ok, but it was scary, to be honest. All that work...anyway, I am wondering what happened, and how to avoid it in the future.

I believe that what may have happened, is that I opened some of the files in both word perfect 8 and ms word, and that somehow this corrupted them. (I don't remember my reason for doing this, but I know I had one at the time.)Are there some guidelines/warnings/issues I should know about in terms of opening docs in multiple applications? Or on different machines (my school computer, home computer, laptop, etc.)?

Also...are there any special conditions that will cause corruption like this to occur, that I should know about?

My user has spent years building her Auto-Text feature within Word 2003 to the point it is now, but her company just bought her a new Windows 7 Pro machine with Office 2010 installed. She asked that I migrate her Auto-Text data to Word 2010. After researching on google.com I found that this data is stored in a Normal.dot file and this file needs to be migrated to (in Windows 7)
C:\Users\<User Name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Office.

Having done this, I now find the Normal.dot file I placed there in this location, as well as a new Normal.dot file that Word 2010 has created, but the two aren't merging. I see the new file has macros enabled... Does anyone have any ideas on how to merge these files into one file useable by Word 2010?

Thanks,
S~

A:Help with migrating a Word 2003 file to Word 2010

Normal.dot is the global template for Microsoft Word and is stored in different locations on the system based on the version of Windows and Word.

You dont want to merge them you want to backup the existing normal.dot file to something like normal.old.
Then replace the file in the correct location, which I cant research for you right now.

The bad thing about doing things like this is that if normal.dot gets corrupted, all the work put in to this is lost!

I'm having a problem here that I was wondering if anyone else has ever encountered. I have several Word documents that I need to combine into a single document. All documents use Times New Roman 12 pt for the font. Each document has certain words that are underlined or bolded, and some have simple tables in them. The problem is that when I merge the documents by using the "Insert" "File..." commands, the documents get totally messed up. What happens is some of the text in the inserted text switches to Arial font, some paragraphs get bolded, some paragraphs end up with the first line starting way into the left margin while the rest of the lines in the paragraph start at the margin. I've tried copying and pasting the text from the other files instead of doing an Insert, but the same thing happens. I want the inserted files to keep all formatting from the original file. I don't know how or why the new formatting gets applied, especially the font change. I never use Arial in any of my documents. Any help is greatly appreciated since this is a very frustrating problem for me. Thanks in advance!

A:How do I keep MS Word open when opened by MS Access

If you remove the two lines

objWord.Quit
Set objWord = Nothing

from the function then Word should stay open. Just add them back into your application at the point that you want to close Word.

Give MBAM a shot at finding and removing the malware. If you can't download or run the scan then first
use RKill to hopefully disable the malware that is blocking the scan. RKill Download  (read what RKill does at that link)

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here
Double-click mbam-setup-2.X.X.XXXX.exe to install the application (X's are the current version number).
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
Once MBAM opens, when it says Your databases are out of date, click the Fix Now button.
Click the Settings tab at the top, and then in the left column, select Detections and Protections, and if not already checked place a checkmark in the selection box for Scan for rootkits.
Click the Scan tab at the top of the program window, select Threat Scan and click the Scan Now button.
If you receive a message that updates are available, click the Update Now button (the update will be downloaded, installed, and the scan will start).
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
If potential threats are detected, ensure that Quarantine is selected as the Action for all the listed items, and click the Apply Actions button.
While still on the Scan tab, click the link for View detailed log, and in the window that opens click the Export button, select Text file (*.txt), and save the log to your Desktop.
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can also be viewed by clicking the Hist... Read more

I have a laptop with Windows 8 and Word 2003 installed.
When I double-click on a .doc file in File Explorer, a warning window comes up that asks whether or not I will allow a program to make changes to my computer. When I click yes, Word 2003 opens, but the file does not open. There is a warning message that says that there was a problem sending the command to the program.
If I then click file-open, I can go to the file that I was trying to open from File Explorer, and the file will open normally.
How can I fix things so that I can open .doc files from File Explorer?

A:.doc files will not open in Word 2003 from File Explorer

Verify that the file association for .doc uses Word as default.

I have twenty-four pages in Microsoft Word 2000 format, each page a separate file. These pages have text boxes with text, text boxes with photos, some horizontal and some vertical pictures.

They were all created by my father-in-law (85 years young and doing well to do what he has done) who doesn't understand how to create a miltipage document for his Eighth Airforce Historical Society newsletter.

Now I must stitch these pages together into a single MSWord 2000 file so I can print 225 copies of this 24-page document in my duplexing printer (prints front and back in one operation).

Does anyone know how to join these? I'm under the gun on this and have to get his chestnuts out of the fire within two days or his newsletter will be late.

I have never managed to do this:
I have a folder, containing subfolders. They have many text files in them. Now: I need to search these text files to find the one which has a specific word or phrase in it. What I do is to hit Ctrl+f to open the search left pane. Then I click 'All files and folders', type the extention of the files I'm searching in (example: .php) and type the word(s) I'm looking for in 'a word or phrase in the file'. Searching within that folder starts. BUT IT NEVER RETURNS A THING, EVER!

Am I doing it wrong? how on earth can I do this?

I am thankful for the volunteers at BC; good morning to all.

Everything was fine last night, but this morning no Word/Excel Starter 2010 docs will open.  The popup reads:

"Microsoft Word Starter cannot be opened.  Try again or repair the product in Control Panel."

I did this Change/Repair from Control Panel and got this message:

"Repair Microsoft Office Click-to-Run
Repairing Microsoft Office Starter 2010 - English was unsuccessful because an internet connection is required.  Ensure your computer can access the internet and try again."

I think it's obvious I do have internet access because I'm submitting this topic, but apparently MSFT Office doesn't know this.

I opened Click-to-Run Application Manager at the Control Panel and got the same error message as above. Snip attached.

I restarted and attempted the Change/Repair from the Control Panel with the same results.

From glancing in Microsoft Community concerning this, I see that those for whom the repair would not work were encouraged to uninstall Microsoft Word Starter 2010 at Control Panel, then go to Start>Programs>Microsoft Office 2010>click "use", click "open", then reinstall Office Starter 2010...however, each said this didn't work as there is no "use" option available, plus there's an error that Click-to-Run Application Manager won't function.

I tried to do System Restore back to 11/7/2015, but I'm still getting the same "unabl... Read more

Hi

A few days ago i was defragmenting my C: drive, but stopped and closed the defragmenter - only i don't think it stopped/closed properly because heavy disc activity continued. A few seconds after I closed it I opened a file in Microsoft Word 2000 and the computer rebooted automatically (pausing a little longer then normal on the opening motherboard logo screen).

Ever since that happened, everytime I open Word, Adobe Photoshop 6.0, Winword + i think others, the computer restarts without warning. This also happens when I attempt to print (although i can print succesfully from a pc networked to the same printer).

I've tryed defragmenting C drive completley, ran the Disck Check tool on C:, and have scanned for virus with Norton Antivirus, and re-installed Office 2000 - all with no results.

I am using Windows 2000, P4 2.4ghz, 512 DDR RAM, 3 x 20 GB HD, panasonic laser printer KX-P6100, epson stylus photo 830, Sony DRU-510A DVD-RW

any help regarding what exactly the problem is, what has caused it, or how it can be fixed would be very much appreciated.

thankyou, Jake.

Whenever I launch MS Word 2003 (or try to send an email which uses Word as its editor) the WIndows Installer pops up, then shortly thereafter an error message comes up saying, "MS OFFICE Standard Edition 2003 Installation Error: FIle not Found A required installation file YC561413.CAB could not be found. ORiginal INstallation source required." The error message originally told me I needed a different file for Speech Recognition (which I have never used/have no use for). I got sick of the messages so I got my disks out and tried to find the files it wants, but couldn't. How do I stop this annoying glitch? I did recently install Adobe Acrobat, and I wonder if that somehow caused this problem. Help! I use Word all the time and it takes forever to cancel out of the installation. Once I do, it works fine.

A:error message every time Word is opened

Try uninstalling/reinstalling MS Office, make sure you backup any docs you may want.
