External monitor wont work to fix blank screen HP envy

Q: External monitor wont work to fix blank screen HP envy

The screen on my new laptop has gone blank on starting up, it shows nothing, i tried a hard reset which didn't fix. The external monitor won't display anything.
It's a HP envy 15-j112tx running windows 8. With a hdmi connection i tried to connect to an external monitor. The monitor was previously using vga to a desktop, i unplugged that and connected my dvi cable to the dvi port. The monitor says check video connection then goes to sleep. I connected the cables with the laptop turned off and again with the laptop already on. The monitor still says check video connection. The connection is secure, it is a new cord. I pressed the F4 button to switch between screens and waited inbetween presses but still nothing.

It is still under warranty. I disabled the nvidia graphics card a few days ago to try n save on power usage, as it also has an intel graphics card. It has worked fine for a few days since i did that.
Now that i've powered it on/off about 5 times the hard drive stops whirring after about a minute, yet the power button light remains on. It no longer turns off when i hold power for even a minute. I dont want to kill the thing.

Can anyone help me, i can't find an answer in previous threads.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I bought a new flex cable to test if it works.

Hello-
I have an issue with my Inspiron N5010 screen, it doesn't work when switching on my laptop on Battery or AC mode. It happens a lot of times when I turn on the laptop the power button, the power indicators at the bottom turns on normally and the laptop is running without any weird sounds. But the screen is pitch black even doesn't show up anything when I concentrate on it in with a lamp or any light.
When I press the power button again even after 5 mins from the start time of being running the laptop just turn off immediately and doesn't take time to switch off as If the windows wasn't loaded!
I was resolving this problem by disconnecting the AC adapter > removing the battery > Pressing and hold the power button for 20 seconds technique.but today it doesn't work anymore, If there's anything I can do to get the screen backlight to work normally please If someone faced this problem before which is too common and found a solution I would appreciate any help.
Thanks.

A:N5010 blank screen at startup (External Monitor also didn't work)

Hi,
I really appreciate all the troubleshooting you have already done. If you do not get a display on the external monitor it might be an issue with the video card or the system board where it is connected. When you connect an external monitor to the system press on the Fn and F1 keys together to toggle between the displays, if it doesn't work you can only with the F1, and check if you get display on the external monitor.
I would also recommend you to run the LCD built in self test to check the hardware functionality of the LCD screen, you can run this test by following the steps below:

Power down the system.
Press and hold the 'D'  key on the keyboard and power it on.
A solid color screen is shown and five different colors are displayed. While the colors are displayed, the system beeps every 2 seconds. You can use this test to determine if something is wrong with the display.

You can perform the Dell Diagnostics to determine if there is any hardware failure. To perform the diagnostics, follow the steps:

Turn off the computer; press and hold the <Fn> key, push the power button and release the keys simultaneously.
A blue screen will appear stating Pre-boot System Assessment .
A screen will appear with a message 'Were color bars displayed?(y/n).
Press 'Y' key if the color bars are displayed properly.
If you get any error code, make a note of it and continue testing.

So, recently my computer's files got corrupted (I think). I was loaded up CS:S as usual, joined a server I love playing on and waited until I downloaded the map. I waited 10 minutes and guessed it wasn't responding, so I tried to force close it's process "hl2.exe" multiple times, but it didn't close, so I force shut off my laptop 5 minutes later. When I booted it - windows recovery showed up. I shrugged it off and let it do it's work. 1 hour later my laptop shut down and tried to run it again but system recovery runs for 5 seconds. Then I tried booting up in safe mode, but it also redirected me to system recovery. Then I got on my other laptop and downloaded a windows 7 iso. I burned it onto my usb and messed with some BIOS settings to boot the usb on start up. I exitted and saved my BIOS settings and booted up my computer, but after that my laptop didn't display anything. Any help?

P.S: I am using an LG monitor with a VGA cable because my laptop's screen is cracked from the inside and I've been using the vga connected monitor ever since without any problems and got used to it sooner or later. I also tried connecting my laptop with a HDMI cable to my tv, but it didn't work whatsoever.

Thanks in advance

Hey Everyone! Trying to get an idea of what order to start throwing parts at this thing. Like the title says, my screen on the Yoga 2 Pro is blank. The computer boots and runs fine on an external monitor. I haven't pulled the bezel off the screen yet, but the video cable looks good on the mobo end. I am guessing I probably need to buy a new screen, but was wondering if I could have a cable issue before I spend $150 on a screen.  Couple of interesting things:In the device manager, only the external display is in the "Monitor" list. I don't have an option to mirror displays in the graphics properties or anything. My compupter just things there's one monitor, the external one.  I was having flickering issues leading up to the screen going out. Flickering only occured on battery.  Any thoughts?

Hi, As you are confirming that issue is intermittent, and now its working fine, it means that issue would be of display cable. The display cable would be loose. Issue can be fixed by refixing the display cable, if the issue persists then the display cable needs to be replaced. This is the only reason, I asked you in the previous post whether issue was intermittent or display view changed while moving the display lid. This particualr issue has nothing to do with the temperature. Regards,Sumit I am an HP Employee

Bought DELL XPS 15-9550 with intel Core i7, 16G RAM, 1TB SSD HD, with Nvidia-GeForce GTX 960M from Best Buy last November.
Connected to external monitor HP2311xi through the HDMI.
Issue:
Everytime need to set up display as 2 display, HP as Main and laptop as extended. Then every 5 to 6 min, the system reverted back to single display by first blanking the screens.
Reset the display by clicking detect and the laptop screen come back alive, and then after 5 to 6 same thing happened
Talk to Geek Squad. Change the cable, update the Intel HD graphics drive, reinstall and uninstall. Still happening
Update BIOS to the latest available still not solve the issue
Even after letting it in single display mode, the blanking keep continue. It is very annoying and distracting while working.
Any one encounter the same issue.  Please share the resolution
Thank you

A:Dell XPS 15-9550 with External Monitor HP2311xi - keep getting blank screen on and off -

I am having the same issue with my XPS 15-9550 with Nvidia combined graphics connected to a Dell UP3216Q external monitor.
Typically when interacting with apps, i.e. scrolling in MS Edge browser, the external monitor blacks out for a few seconds. It is very intermittent, and tends to occur several times within a 30 second period then it will stop for a while. Acts like bad HDMI cable connection. I have the same issue with multiple cables, although it could be the receiving connector on either the laptop or the monitor.
Have changed drivers on both the Nvida and intel adapters with no change in behavior. Changed resolution, frame rate, etc.
The problem renders the system unusealbe and I will have to return both the laptop and display if not resolved soon.

Hey there, recently repaired a Studio 1555, has latest BIOS A13. Battery is removed. Plugging in the power adapter causes the screen to flash white briefly, but when powering on the system there is no image visible. Plugging in an external screen by VGA shows normal image and Windows boots fine. Powering on while holding the D button shows the RGB test pattern as expected. Any ideas why the screen isn't working in normal mode, but works during the test and with external monitor?

Any input on what might be causing these problems will be greatly appreciated.

A:PC Crashed, blank screen, Monitor and video card work

I would suggest trying something like a BartPE, an Ultimate Boot CD disk, or a Live Linux distribution to access your data (if possible) so that you can recover it. This will also tell you if the hardware is working correctly - since being able to get at your files would indicate that the hardware seems to be OK (although a slowly failing hard drive may not be obvious here). If you cannot recover the data this way, then the next step (IMO) would be to download a bootable hard drive diagnostic from the website of the manufacturer of your hard drive. Links to the most common are in this topic: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/28744/hard-drive-installation-and-diagnostic-tools/

I've got a Toshiba l305d.

The other day my laptop was sitting on a desk playing music when the screen went gray with black bars going across it vertically. I'd never seen anything like this, and it was completely frozen, so I manually powered it off and restarted. Then the screen wouldn't come on.

I've managed to get it to display through an external screen, and to my surprise the screen on my actual laptop would come back on after I'd get to the Windows Vista login screen. I unhooked the monitor cable, tested Windows a little bit (everything seemed to be working okay), and then restarted. It restarted just fine. So I tried shutting down, but it the screen wont power on if it's turned off. If I hook it to the external monitor again, i can get back to Windows. I'm just trying to figure out why it won't power the screen on its own.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Have used an external monitor for over 2 years with no problem.  Suddenly, my external monitor is no longer detected.  It works on other computer.  Tried switching from HDMI to VGA-no help.  Tried different HDMI cable-no help. Sometimes if I disable and enable the Intel HD graphics card it will come back but not every time.  Updated video drivers.  I saw another older post but the supposed fix link does not work anymore. The external monitor is simply not detected even though the laptop "beeps" when I plug in the HDMI cable so it recognizes that being plugged in.  Monitor stays dark. Any idea?

I have a problem with an HP Envy m6-k125dx.
https://forums.techguy.org/threads/hp-envy-starts-and-goes-directly-to-hibernate.1203428/

The first step to troubleshoot it is to test the monitor (according to HP support).

Their product specs say it has an HDMI port.
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04094893
but not what kind of HDMI port it is.

What type of HDMI port is on the HP Envy m6-k125dx?

Then I can order an adapter to see if the monitor is the problem.

I need an adapter that will fit a 15 pin VGA. The monitor will also accept the other plugin with more pins (whatever that is called)

So I need whatever type of HDMI port the HP Envy m6-k125dx has that will connect to a normal computer monitor?

What do I need to test this monitor?

Also, I don't get any access to BIOS or any of that stuff. So when I turn on the computer pressing Esc or F11 won't even show anything on the screen. Is the ability to read the monitor at that point related to a bad video card. It is just a black screen. not even a cursor shows

Anyway, I need to start the troubleshooting process and I need to know which adapter to get.

Open Device Manager and find the driver that is giving you trouble. Right click it and choose Rollback driver. This will install the previous version of the driver. Sometimes, it?s better to use the default driver in order to avoid compatibility issues. To use the default driver you?ll need to uninstall the current one you?re using and the default one will install itself. To uninstall the driver, do this:Open Device manager and find the buggy driver.Right click it and choose Uninstall.Check Delete the driver software for this device and click OK.Restart your computer.

Check the device manager under display adapters. Sometimes on a Windows 10 update you get Microsoft Basic which will not activate the HDMI port and you need to get the correct driver for the video. It would also help if we had the full model number or Product Number.

This Envy 23 was recently upgraded to windows 10 64-bit from 8.1 64-bit. The issue started when the computer started going into these crash loops that gave the errors "NTFS_File_System" and "Critical_Process_Died".Eventually, the computer stopped turning on all together. The power light would turn on, but the screen remained blank. After searching up the first error, I had decided to buy a new, blank hard drive of the same model that came with the computer. Installing it didn't fix anything. The disk spins up, and the fans turn on, but there is no image on the screen. Not even the backlight to the display. I feel like this could be an issue related to the windows 10 upgrade, but I'm not sure. The computer has Norton Internet Security installed, as well as MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. It is scanned on a regular basis, though I am aware that such programs cannot catch everything. No other programs were installed, and there were no changes made to the computer before the faliures happened.I'm unsure of what the issue could be.Edit: Upon attempting to recover data from the old hard-drive, using SpeedFan to read the S.M.A.R.T. statistics revealed that the hard-drive was dangerously close to failing completely.Edit: The hard drive has failed, after copying 40 Gb of photos off of the hard drive. The drive is not useable.

A:Envy 23 screen blank

Hi Pyroshadow, It sounds like there was a system file error that occured during the upgrade to Win 10. To fix that, you could run a System Recovery to set it back to Win 8.1, and then retry the upgrade.  You will need to put your original hard drive back in though. The new hard drive doesn't have a system image on it yet (it's an empty drive) so this is why you don't see anything on the screen when trying to start from it. If you want to use the new drive, you'll need to order recovery media from HP to then run it on the PC to install the system image on the hard drive. I hope this helps.

When I start my laptop it goes straight to a blank white screen. I can hear the fan running and the lights are flicking on and it sounds like it wants to start but the screen remains blank. I tried taking the battery out and starting the computer with only the AC adaptor I even took out the memory and realigned it but nothing seems to work. What's wrong with my laptop?

I solved the Blank Screen issue by updating the bios but found i came to a halt using the adriuno method. I wasted a lot of time doing everything described in the adriuno method and in the end was allowed to read the bios but was not able to write to it. I found another method which there is a short video of it in another form by dimar 2342 and had it solved in around half an hour and was cheaper to buy the stuff needed to do it. So for anyone going to attempt the ardiuno method i recomend doing it dimar 2342 way first as i think you will save  yoursel a lot of time and i think if you are new to this kind of thing like i was, it is a way easier method.

My laptop is out of warranty and now its having problems Initially i noted clicking sound coming out of the computer. Not sure if this was from fan or HDD.Next day the PC won't start up. I was not able to even get into BIOSpressing F2 or F4 or F10 or F11, nothing helped. Screen just stays black. I tried 1. Hard reset2. Replacing memory sticks3. Connecting to external monitor4. Recovering bios 5. Connecting recovery USB flash.  none of them helped Lastly, i tried powering up with HDD disconnected... then I was able to get into BIOS. Not sure what to make of this. Please help.

So this started when I used to put my laptop on sleep and close the lid. When I opened the lid the screen will go blank and I would have to do a hard reboot. As if that was not annoying enough, now even on full restart some times the screen goes blank and I have to hard reboot it to get it working. This is unacceptabily annoying. Please let me know how to resolve these issues. (Am using windows 8.1 and ubuntu 14.04 if that effects the answer)

A:Hp envy 15 Blank screen after sleep and at start

Hello @ankitagarwal , Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand your screen does not recover from sleep mode or restart on your ENVY 15 notebook without doing a hard reset. If this issue persists in both Windows 8.1 and Trusty Tahr you're looking at a hardware or BIOS issue. Make sure the BIOS is up to date (Version F.64, Revision A, Pass 1) using the following download: HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors) If the issue only occurs when closing the lid and not just going to sleep it's most likely a display issue. If it happens without closing the lid as well I would suggest testing an external monitor to test for potential GPU problems. You can also use the HP tools to test for hardware issues with the video output by following this guide: Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 8). Let me know if any of this helps.

Hello,we got shipment of X250s and Pro Docks 40A10090EU to company but we have problem with connection via DVI to external display. When laptop is docked, lid closed and it is started by power button on dock, external display is blank. Then I open lid, both - external and system are still blank. Only option is power off the laptop. There is no problem if we power on in dock with open lid. With VGA or DP cable it is OK also.Important thing is we have own image with Windows 8.1 64bit. Factory image with Windows 7 is working fine.- its not only one machine. i tried more laptops, docs, monitors, cables with different set up- by default we took SCCM driver package from Lenovo site for image- after finding problem I install every possible driver for GPU, dock, bios - firstly by System Update then manually- i have tried change setting in bios (config->boot display) with no result Any advice?

Title says it all. I had the dreaded bios corruption problem, which required remotely flashing the bios chip as per instructions on this forum here The small issue now is that this bios flashing wipes the bios of all of the "System Ids" which prohibits the HP Recovery Disks from working. Can anyone here provide the full compliment of System IDs to re-enter into the bios for HP 23 AIO model 23-c010xt ? For example, my machine has no label that has information for FeatureByte.  And furthermore, even the other info in the bios screen regarding the "system Ids" are apparently not named the same, such as the fact that none of my stickers has "Build Id" etc. So if anyone who has this EXACT same model, could you provide a screen shot of the System Ids or a text output of all the System Ids info so that I can re-enter it into the bios?  Apparently you need this info entered into the bios to get the recovery disks to work, otherwise I will have to buy a new Windows product key because the HD installation has a botched Win10 upgrade installation, is now corrupt and has to be reinstalled. I should not have to buy a new license key because HP managed to have corrupt bios problems, doesn't put a Windows license product key sticker on its PC, and now hangs me out to dry. So if any fellow user can supply this info, that would be awesome and THANK YOU immensely in advance.  I know how to enter it into the bios -- CTRL-A once into the bios.&nb...
