Inserted Symbols in Word 2007 disappeared

Q: Inserted Symbols in Word 2007 disappeared

Inserted symbols in Word 2007 (the fractions 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, etc) were reading correctly a week ago. When I bring the files back now, the symbols are gone (replaced with little rectangles). Other symbols, such as the one for degrees, are unaffected. Any ideas how to fix and prevent this from happening again?

I am using Windows 7 and Windows 8 on separate computers.

Preferred Solution: Inserted Symbols in Word 2007 disappeared

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

- not terribly good grammar in that header... sorry!
My problem is in my very long document (92,000 words), into which I've just replaced a font with another, that I downloaded from a reputable site.
I tell you about the reputableness because the problem I'm now experiencing I was having the other day, in a slightly different format...
When I turn on Show/Hide, which I do often, instead of seeing small dots representing character spaces, there are empty squares. (Sorry, I haven't been here for ages, and have forgotten how to post a screen-grab as evidence.)
A couple of days ago, the problem - now gone - was that in tables I was seeing euro signs instead of the little round thinggy with the four prongs.
So I would seem to have some deep-seated... SOMETHING going on, yeah?
Can anyone help, please?

Heres what Microsoft's online help says:

...You've got a great picture to illustrate your text, and you know exactly where you want it to be positioned. When you insert the picture, however, it floats off the page or seems to be cut off, which is not what you had in mind.
When a picture is inserted into your Word document, its default placement is in line with your text. That is, Word inserts the picture where your cursor is, even though it may not be aligned properly with the text around it...

The bold part is what I want to change... is this even possible?

Hello all,

On the 12th October I was editing a Word 2007 document on my Vista Home laptop. Throughout editing I pressed Ctrl S to save the doc over the previous version. I copied data in from several other files.
I went back yesterday to edit the document again and it has disappeared. The only version of the doc is a previous version dated 21st Sept.
I searched on all files modified after 11th Oct just in case I had saved it under another name. Not in there. The files I copied data from did come up in the search results though, soi knwo the search function is working.
I checked the default Autosave location - not in there.
I checked the recycle bin - the doc is not in there and neither are any ~ files or autosaved files. I haven't emptied my recycle bin for months.
I cannot find a word doc modified afetr the 11th October.

Can it really just have disappeared? It is my MBA dissertation paper and I worked on this edit for an awful lot of hours.

Many thanks.

One of my mail recipients is receiving weird formatting symbols when I send an e-mail in Outlook. For example, when I send something with ".............................." she actually receives " …………"

I have changed the font to courier - and still she is receiving this. Any suggestions? My issue or hers? She also has office 2007.

A:Weird Symbols in outlook 2007

If others get the same message from you (or something similar) without the strangeness, it is her problem for certain. If others are also getting the odd formatting, it is probably your problem.
What email program does she use on her end? Outlook uses some formatting that other programs don't.

A (long gone) student was using an excel worksheet and each time she put in dollar symbols they would automatically disappear. After I couldn't get hers to come back, I went on my computer and tried to make mine disappear and they wouldn't. I tried different settings in the show/hide options and the excel options. I have tried to find some info about this via Google but I think I'm using the wrong search terms (I've tried 'show' 'hide' 'symbol' 'character' 'dollar sign'- none of these talked about the above issue). Any help would be much appreciated.

When I insert a picture in Word 97 document, the picture shows up on the screen, but doesn't print or show up in Print Preview. If I save the file to a floppy and move it to my lap top with word 97, the picture prints fine.
If I create a file on my lap top with an inserted picture and move it to my desk top word 97 (WIN98) the picture prints along with the text.
What the heck is going on. The desk top system is Win98 and the lap top has Win 95.

A:Word - inserted picture don't print

Some possibilities:
You might be printing in draft mode. To print the borders and graphics in the document, click Options on the Tools menu, click the Print tab, and then clear the Draft output check box.

Make sure the Drawing objects option, which prints graphics, is selected. On the Tools menu, click Options, click the Print tab, and then select the Drawing objects check box.

You may be trying to print the field codes for a linked graphic rather than printing the graphic itself. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Print tab. Clear the Field codes check box.

Today I was viewing an e-mail. It had a jpeg file, which I opened, & also some text. I wanted to save the text as a joke, so I set about rearranging the words (you know how in some e-mail messages the words are not lined up & the text is different colors?...). I was almost done, & all of a sudden (I don't even recall hitting a particular key) the whole message was full of those < and > signs & those paragraph symbols, in front of & behind every line. I have Outlook 98 & use Word 97 as my e-mail editor. So I checked my view menu, thinking I had somehow changed to page layout, but I was still in normal view. Then when I went out of my e-mail program to check my Word program, it does the same thing in new, blank documents & also my previously saved documents--little paragraph symbols before & after every line! I thought I had a virus, so I deleted the jpeg & e-mail, then ran an antivirus program on both my hard drives & on all my Outlook files--no viruses found. So how can I get rid of those symbols in all my documents? It makes my Word program virtually unusable. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!
P.S. In case it matters, I have Windows ME. My CPU is an HP 7320, Pentium with MMX, 166mhz, 128 MB RAM.

Is there any place to get additional symbols for MS Word? I am particularly looking for more cooking symbols, such as 1/8, 1/6, 2/3, etc... I have searched for math symbols & fonts, as well as more MS Word symbols, but I can't find anything.

When I type in 1/2 (then hit the spacebar) the symbol automatically changes to . I want all the measurements in this size, but this only works in the m most common ones.

Any suggestions?

A:Additional Symbols for Word?

The most common symbols can be accessed in Word by clicking INSERT >> SYMBOL. If you need additional symbols you can also click the Windows start button and then click RUN and then type CHARMAP You can select various symbols and characters and copy them directly to your clipboard to paste into other applications.

If you want to turn off the fraction feature altogether in Word you can click Tools >> AutoCorrect and then select the AutoFormat tab and uncheck "Fractions 1/2 with Fraction character ."

Another option is to press SHIFT + F9 to turn on your field codes and then type the following inside the curly braces eq \f(x,y) (just replace the x and y with your actual numerator and denominator) and then press SHIFT + F9 again to convert to a fraction.

Know Your Numbers
It is crucial to "Know Your Numbers" with respect to Blood Pressure. Life-threatening complications can develop over a course of years when hypertension exists. Increased pressure on the inner walls of blood vessels make the vessels less flexible over time and more vulnerable to the buildup of fatty deposits in a process known as atherosclerosis. Hypertension also forces the heart to work harder to pump adequate blood throughout the body. This extra work causes the muscles of the heart to enlarge, and eventually the enlarged heart becomes inefficient in pumping blood. An enlarged heart may lead to heart failure, in which the heart can not pump enough blood to meet the body's needs.

I need to insert a lot of Visio drawings into Word documents. I prefer to edit the drawings in a full Visio Window rather than in place. When I return to Word, I want the drawing to be sized to fit the drawing contents.

I figured out how to get Visio to open in a full window when in Word I do Insert|Object|Visio Drawing: in the registry I added EditInPlaceOnInsertObject=0. When I exit from Visio back to Word, it sizes to fit the drawing contents, too.

But I can't get the same things to happen when I open a previously inserted drawing to edit it. If I double click the object, it opens in place rather than in a separate window, so I have to right click it and choose Visio Object|Open. But when it opens, the shapes take up the entire drawing page. If I want to add something to the drawing, I do File|Page Setup|Page Size|Predefined Size|Standard to put the shapes on a larger page. But then they're scrunched in the lower left corner, so I do Edit|Select All, grab them, and move them somewhere else to get more room. Then the zoom factor is different than it was when I first made the drawing, so I may have to change the zoom to get a shape size that's convenient to work with. And when I exit Visio back to Word, Visio doesn't automatically size to fit to the drawing contents, so I have to remember to do File|Page Setup|Page Size|Size to fit drawing contents before I go back to Word.

I had been using SmartDraw to make drawings. To edit an already-inserted d... Read more

My system:

I convert PDF files to Word documents. When I do, however, I find the symbol, which Word informs me is the "NOT SIGN" placed randomly within the converted text. The symbol has the character code 00AC. It looks like a horizontal line with another line attached to its right side going perpendicularly downwards (like an L turned upside down and the base horizontal line pointing downwards).

Is there any way of removing these without having to scan through pages and pages of text and removing them manually? Microsofts TechNet pages are of little use in this matter.

Thanks in advance.

How does one get character map symbols to show up in MS-Word 2000?

In Windows XP, Program Files > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map will show the symbols in the character map for a given font. After clicking on a symbol, the keystroke combination will show in the lower right (for example, ALT+0230 for ''). So, far, I've been copying and pasting the symbol from the character map to get it to appear in text (as I did here to get the '' to show up).

But this is going to get tedious. I can't figure out how to get it to appear by using keystrokes. Pressing the ALT key (either the left one or the right one) and typing the numbers (e.g., 0230) doesn't bring anything on the MS-Word screen, even when the font matches that of the character map. So, I need a step-by-step set of instructions on how to key-in ALT+0230, for example, on the keyboard and get '' to appear on the screen.

And to make it even easier, there must be a way to map a symbol or a set of keystrokes to a keyboard key. But, I can't figure out how. Can someone give me some directions?

A:MS-Word 2000/Character Map Symbols

It should work, unless your keyboard driver does not support it for some strange reason.

You are using the number pad keys I assume, and not the numeric keys above the main keys? (only Number Pad keys are usually supported on many standard keyboards)

Hi Everyone,
Right i'm more hardware orientated so not sure on this one. In word '97 (i know, ancient) my friend is trying to insert special characters and suchlike.
Now when she goes to Insert - Symbol and the windows appears, half of the characters are missing all that is in the space is a small square. Sometimes she can see the symbol/character but on inserting it is either a square or space that is inserted.
I'm no expert but on reinstalling Word the problem is the same, could it be the installed Fonts on the system that are corrupt or does the problem lie elsewhere.
Cheers Guys

I have had an utterly bizarre problem ever since I upgraded to Windows 10, and it persists now after the Windows 10 update. My computer is a Lenovo Ideapad, with an Alps touchpad. Here's the issue:

If I unintentionally swipe across the touchpad from the left as I begin to use it, it will (silently!) erase whatever word is just behind the cursor. That's in Microsoft Word. If I'm in another application -- say Notepad -- it will instead leave one of those little rectangular boxes that indicate a character that won't display.

I haven't seen any discussion of this problem anywhere. All my drivers are updated. The system claims to be entirely current. And yet this maddening bug persists.

I'm not sure when this started as I have not used Office in a few weeks.  My computer uses Windows 7.  Today, I went to open a document in Word and it said "File Conversion--Select the encoding that makes your document readable."  I can choose between Windows, MS-DOS, or other encoding.  I went to check another file and it says "The file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents."  It also says "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened."  I get the same kinds of messages with every document and with my PowerPoint as well.  All of my Office is 2007.
I tried running my AVG Free and SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition and they did not pick up anything.  I also tried restoring to my last update, but was told that I cannot because the file was changed in the process.  I had to restore for another, unrelated issue about a week ago and it worked fine.
I'm thinking this is some kind of virus but I have no idea how to handle it since nothing is picking it up and I can't restore to even three days ago.  Any help would be IMMENSELY appreciated, as I am a college student and need to be able to hand in final papers!

When using Word 2007 you need to "save as" Word 97-2003 format to retain backwards compatibility.

On computer1, I have successfully created a customized form with user-define fields in Outlook 2007 and a merge document in Word 2007 that works (starting the merge from Outlook 2007). I want to copy the custom form with the user-define fields and the merge document to a second computer (computer2).

I saved the custom form with fields from computer1 to a *.fdm file using the Tools, Options, Other, Advanced Options, Custom Forms, Manage forms. On computer2 I used the same process to install the custom form file (*.fdm) into Outlook 2007 and created a new contact folder that uses the form and displays/adds new contact records correctly. I also copied the Word merge document to computer2. Computer1 and computer2 both have Office 2007.

All the problems occur on computer2. First, when I attempted to merge (starting in Outlook 2007), Word gave messages that all my user-defined fields did NOT exist in the database although I could see them in the Contact records. I attempted to create a new document and the user-define fields do NOT show up in the Word merge field list either.

On computer2, I created from scratch a new contacts folder with a new custom form and user-define fields which works when merging. Therefore, the problem seems to be that Word can not see the fields I created from the *.fdm file I installed.

Can anyone please help me with this? Thank you in advance.

I have been running a new PC, ASUS Z97-WS, for about four months. Over 80% of my application crashes are related to Microsoft products. I am running WIN7 Ultimate x64, using Office 2007. Word crashes daily reporting ?? software exception (0xe00000002) ?? I have run hardware tests, including Word diagnostics without finding errors. I also run Viso Professional 2007, which attempts to reinstall itself every time I start the program. I can cancel the install or lets it proceed. Once started Viso works correctly. Word is my biggest headache as it tends to fail just when you are saving a file for the first time. If it recovers it normally looses the data entered, it sometimes shows repairs related to image objects but is vague on details.

I have all the latest Microsoft updates, BIOS updates, print drivers, and have disabled all Word add-ons and have replaced normal.doc.

What would you recommend I try to resolve these concerns? Thanks.
PS The programs worked better when I installed them on a previous PC about 6 years ago.

My employer just upgraded to Microsoft Office 2007. According to the help files, I should be able to paste Excel charts into Word that update automatically when changes are made to either version.

I am clicking "Link to Excel data" and "Keep source formatting" when using the little popup clipboard to paste a chart into Word. But after closing both files, opening Excel and updating data on the chart, saving and closing Excel and re-opening Word, the chart is not updating with the new information. I can't get it to update by clicking on "refresh data" either.

Does anyone know how this is supposed to work? I was looking forward to being able to update just the Excel file and having it update in all the Word documents where it is pasted.

Our OS is Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 2. My work computer has a Pentium 4, 3 GHz processor and 2 GB of RAM.

I am having difficulty linking Excel data from a simple worksheet table to a table in Word 2007. I would like to retain all the formatting currently used in the Word table, but can't get the Paste Options working at all despite following all the advice on the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

If I copy the Excel data and then place my cursor at the first cell location within the Word table where I want the information to be pasted I get different paste options compared to placing my cursor outside of the table.

I am using the "Medium Grid 3 - Accent 3" Table Style in Word.

I have attached a couple of simple files to demonstrate the formatting and content in both apps.
Step by step help would be appreciated.

I have Office 2007 on Windows 7.

When I am working on a sheet (or document) the ribbon can become inaccessible, nothing works when I click it (like a 'Not Responding' screen).

If, I switch to another open sheet/doc and then switch back the ribbon is accessible again!

I have uninstalled/reinstalled Office plus SP's twice but the problem persists, and, as is usually the case, this does not happen all the time but enough times for it to be really annoying!

Any ideas?

Thanks for your time on this
