Add folder shortcut to the "Open File" screen? - With picture

Q: Add folder shortcut to the "Open File" screen? - With picture

Hi,

When programs calls for a file to be opened, it starts the "Open File" screen. On the left side there are a few custom shortcuts like Library, Desktop, Computer etc.

Some of these I never use, like the Network shortcut. Is it possible to remove this?

But more important: I use Dropbox a lot. Is it possible to add a shortcut to Dropbox (or any other frequently used folder) in the "Open File" screen?

Please see attached picture (although all text is in Norwegian you might still know what I'm talking about?)

I recommend trying the free service from Zip Cloud. It's currently our users' favorite backup and storage solution and will save you headaches down the line.

You can get it direct from this link http://goo.gl/rFYDxc. (This link will open the Zip Cloud homepage.)

Hello Hoggorm,

Yes, it sure is. The tutorial below can help show you how to customize the list of items displayed in the Places Bar in common File/Open dialog boxes (ex: Save As, Open).

I'm using Windows 8.0

The task should be simple. I don't want to be so engrossed in my work on my computer as to miss picking up my daughter from the school bus. (Phone alarms have let me down in the past with dead bat issues etc.) So I thought I'd simply use the task scheduler
to throw up a photo on the screen in front of reminding me to get off the computer and go to the bus stop.

However, each time the program is run (which is simply C:/alarm.jpg - I even placed it back in root C in an effort to solve the problem - to no avail) It just brings up a "How do you want to open this file?"

Yes I know what you might say - that's a good enough alarm anyway - but that's not the point. I had originally used an mp3 file so the music would play loud (that way even if I'm at the loo or on the phone I would hear it) but I scrapped that and because
it too failed to load and I tried using the picture file instead, thinking surely IT would have no problem loading Windows Photo viewer!!!

When the dialogue opens up ad asks "How do you want to open this file?"
It already has listed at the top the very first option "CONTINUE USING WINDOWS PHOTO VIEWER" so it KNOWS that is the default program  - so why on earth is it asking????

I had the same problem with a music file despite the fact that the default MP3 player is VLC media player.

The arguments and start-in fields are blank.

Hey Fellow Techies,

I'm having an issue with a security flaw in Server 2008 R2, it should be a similar kernal as 7 so I'm hoping we can come up with an answer.

L.S.S. - When you right click on a shortcut and go to the properties box there is an option to "open file location" I want to either remove the button or disable it.

I have removed the "Open folder location" link from the context menu itself. I do not want to disable the properties tab completely due to users on occasion need file or shortcut information. This seems to be a big flaw in windows and the last way for users to easily access the C: drive, which I DO NOT want.

I have numerous picture sets in separate folders, and one folder that contains the shortcut to each folder's "cover.jpg" file.

When I right click on one of the shortcut files and select "Open File Location" or select "Properties" and then click the "Open File Location" button, I'm taken to a "search result" window of the last search I did, rather then the shortcut's folder.

Any suggestions on a fix?

My OS is Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium.

Recently, via Windows updates, I accidentally DLed IE 9. After realizing the error, I went to Programs and Uninstalled IE 9. and now a back to IE 8.

Now, whenever I click on a Desktop shortcut icon to open any of the programs I ordinarily use, instead of the program opening, I get a screen that says: Open With, and then there follows a brief list of programs I have recently used.

This is driving me crazy!!! How do I get rid of the problem, and go back to opening programs in the usual manner [simply double clicking on the icon]?????

Thanks so much if you can help with this. This is so frustrating, and I will go completely mad if I can't get this fixed!

Greetings!
For all my Microsoft Office products (Office 2010), when I go to initially save or open a file, the default location is the Documents folder. I rarely use this opting instead for a specific folder on my dedicated Data drive (in this case my E drive). Is there any way to change the default location? Note: I am NOT asking to move the documents folder to a different location. I am interested in using a different location altogether. Is this possible? I am using W7

OK, this is my first post here, & I've never joined a Windows forum, or one for people who build their own computers, although I am somewhat familiar with forums, so let me try to give enough info to see if I can clarify my first question & add a few related ones.

I just upgrades a Dell Precision 690 desktop to Vista Ultimate 64, because for some of the work I do in Photoshop CS4, I felt I would benefit from having access to over 3gigs of Ram. The Dell has 2 Intel Xeon 3 gig processors & the compatibility in place to run a 64bit OS, so I bought Vista Ultimate 64, and upgraded to 8 gigs of Ram. That all works fine & I set up several 66 meg files for large format printing the other day, so I'm pleased with the upgrade from that standpoint.

I just need to get used to some pesky details that slow me down & haven't figured them out from searching. I did make my way to the "local group policy editor" and "enable folder options" so this is now giving me my preferred view (details) whenever I open Windows Explorer.

There are 2 related issues I want to ask about. When I open Windows explorer, it opens as a small window & I like to maximize it. It also opens with the folder named after my user name expanded, and the "Computer" folder collapsed. I never store anything in the folder named after my user name, & I store everything in a mapped network drive, that is mapped to show up below the "computer" folder.

Huh, what's going on here.
My computer lets me browse the network just fine and even sees everything there is to see. However, when I want to say, mount a DVD from a networked computer for example, the Network icon is nowhere to be found on the Open File or Folder dialog window.

Going back to the root level (from the path bar in the very same window) lets me see all the usual stuff: drives, homegroup and such but once again, no network.

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find any solution to this and it seems like a very silly thing to remove from the OS.

I hope it's just me being blind and I really appreciate any information you guys can share on this subject.

Recently, I had to reinstall Windows XP on my C (System) drive due to an inability to boot due to a corrupted boot.ini file. All programs and folders in the C drive were lost and the registry was badly affected, affecting most of my programs on other drives. Meantime, however, non-program folders and files on my other three drives were pretty much okay. Except for one folder, in particular, that I dearly need! This folder, when I try to open it in MSWord, gives me the following prompt: "The folder... isn't accessible. The folder may be located on an unavailable volume or protected by a password." I had made a shortcut to this folder on my desktop (C drive). Also, the non-C drives were RENAMED in the reinstall. This folder was originally in an S drive; it is now in an E drive. I am not clear why this folder now locks me out. It tells me that "access is denied."

Is it possible to open this folder any way? Is there a trick, program, etc. that will give me access to the files in this folder?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello,
I am getting the following error when moving files on the same drive or from one to another:

"Error Moving File or Folder
Cannot remove folder (insert folder name here): The directory is not empty."

This is fairly common (once or twice a month) and it occurs usually with folders containing many subfolders when being moved by explorer gui "Move the selected items", or ctrl-x, ctrl-v . Repeated attempts through the same process seems to move the folders, but the errors increase as the concentration of stubborn folders increases.

There are no event viewer logs corresponding to these errors. (eventvwr.msc: system, or application)

I would have thought this would be a common problem, but extensive searches came up with nothing... so either it is rare, untroubling to others, extremely easy to fix, or my search queries suck. =)
I am going to run Checkdisk to make sure all is well there, and I will repost the likely failure.

A:"Error moving file or folder" "directory is not empty" one file left

Occasionally when I am deleting a file, it is difficult, I have to go through process explorer, search for the thread that is strangely(?) associated with that file in explorer (no reasonable dependencies could be linked, nor is the file being viewed), and kill the thread before deletion.

any thoughts?

Thanks =)

I have searched all over the web and cannot seem to find a solution to the problem I recently started having with my computer. (Although I have found plenty of people claiming to have the same problem.) This is on a computer running XP Pro SP3 with an AMD Anthlon II X2 CPU processor: Normally, when I download something - file, pic, etc. - I can left click on the download dropdown box (revealing the downloaded items list), right click on an item and choose "Open containing folder" and the folder I download the item to would open. (I choose where downloads go, not the My Docs Download folder.) Now, nothing happens when I choose "Open containing folder". At first I thought it was a Firefox problem since that is the browser I usually use so I did a ?refresh? but that did not correct the problem. Then I realized it was also happening with Chrome, so that ruled out a browser setting causing the problem. (I have IE but never use it.) If what I have downloaded uses a program, double clicking on the file in the dropbox still opens the correct program normally.

More investigating revealed that right clicking on a program icon on my desktop and choosing "Find target" was also not working ? nothing happens. (Normally the program folder would open with the .exe file highlighted.) I have to think both problems are caused by the same malfunction. Windows Explorer is functioning normally and I can locate the folders and files manually.

Here is the deal.
In doing drive copies, data recoveries, etc... when we are moving a mass amount of data from one drive to another we run into this problem a lot.
"Error moving file or folder" -- "directory is not empty"
If you restart the move, it will continue on and keep going, restart enough times and eventually it will move all directories.

I think its a programming issue with windows and wonder if anyone has a work around ?

I have a suspicion that the copy process is getting out of sequence. That it is trying to move a folder before it actually emptied it. Possibilities are :
1) windows forgot its place in moving through and navigating numerous sub directories and it is having a problem with “recursive calls.”
2) Computers with hyper threading or dual core processors are spawning the movement of files across multiple processes, and some are getting ahead of the other.
3) It did actually move the file, but the cache or something in memory has not updated, or the full data write has not completed yet before it tried to move the directory. (delayed write)
Yes, you can copy and then delete the old... Read more

A:"Error moving file or folder" -- "directory is not empty"

This is a known issue. It is by design.

As you may know, moving is in its essence an unsafe process. It would be better to use the actual sequence of copy and then delete.

A:No "ScreenShots" Folder in Pictures To Hold " Print Screen" Images!

Is it just saving the screenshots somewhere else or is it just not taking screenshots at all? Don't know about your specific system, but on my Win 10 lappy, the screen blinks (dims) when the screenshot is taken.
Did you look in all the subfolders in Pictures to see if Screenshots folder is buried in one of them?
Win 10 also has a Snipping Tool which will allow you to put a box around the part of the screen you want to capture and then you can save it wherever you want. Maybe that's easier, and you can pin the Snipping Tool to the Start menu so it's easy to find.

OK. This is complicated; please be patient. Some months ago my PC (Win7 Ultimate x64) suddenly came up with the dreaded "BOOTMGR missing...press CTRL+ALT+DEL to continue..." error message. No idea what caused this; the OS had been operating flawlessly for almost a year. Anyway, I tried using a "Windows 7 Recovery Disc" which I had burned from an .iso file downloaded ages ago. After several unsuccessful attempts to fix the problem with the Recovery Disc, I gave up in frustration and rebooted from the Win7 installation DVD. It of course told me there was an existing Win7 OS on the machine; did I wish to update/overwrite that or install a NEW copy of the OS? I chose "new copy" and installed it. This fixed the problem, of course. Once I was certain all was working (several days later), I used Win7's "BOOTMGR" utility to DELETE this second, unnecessary version of the OS. All still worked fine, but it "shrunk" drive D: and left an "UNUSED" area on the drive (according to the DISKMGR tool). I don't remember the drive letter the install routine created. Anyway, I could not "extend" D: or get back the wasted HD space no matter what I tried. Naturally, in the process I stupidly screwed up something and was back to the "BOOTMGR missing..." situation. Try deleting all the Thumbs.db files in the pictures folders (you may have to turn off protect hidden operting system files in Tools>Folder Options>View to see them) so they rebuild themselves. Also see if it works from another account. If that doesn't help there's probably some corruption in the dll that's performing the thumbnail routine and you'll have to get advice from more versed citizens on how to replace that dll.

I notice that Chrome icon pinned to taskbar has inconsistent behavior between my Windows 10 Pro installs. (My taskbar is configured for "Taskbar buttons: Never combine", but it makes no difference)

1. On one machine clicking on pinned Chrome icon expands that pinned icon "in place", i.e. the pinned icon expands and becomes a wide taskbar entry for Chrome window. This is the normal behavior for Windows 10.

2. On another machine clicking on pinned Chrome icon creates a new taskbar entry for the new Chrome window. The new expanded entry appears in the taskbar to the right of the pinned icons, while the original pinned Chrome icon remains unchanged. This behavior is similar to that of ordinary Windows 7 Quick Launch bar.

So far only Chrome behaved in this inconsistent fashion. Other pinned icons consistently behave in accordance with the first scenario.

So, would could possibly be the reason for a pinned Chrome icon to follow the latter behavior?

Like each of the folder contained almost 50-60 pics and now each of them have only 1 or 2 showing. Am not sure what has gone wrong, but the last modified date shows 1/04/2012, but i havint touched those folders on that day. I used picasa to pull out all teh pics on the system and it matchs the ones present on the folder. I am really concerned that i mite hav lost everything, and i dont hav back of all the pictures. Can a recovery restore all of it ? I am sure I did not delete them.

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks.
Prithika

A:Unable to find pictures in "my picture" folder

Depends on what actually happened to them. If they were deleted, and as you have been using the PC for months without noticing, they have likely already been overwritten. You can try data recovery software and see what is found.

In any case, this should be an eye opener that you should have at LEAST one copy of any important data. Preferably multiple copies, with a copy kept offsite. For example, if the PC and copies are stored in a single location, and that location is destroyed...all of the data is gone.

Hello, I recently got Vista 32-bit (swedish version), and I'm having a bit of trouble with my pictures-folder.

Since I use swedish vista, I'm not sure on exactly what things are called in the english version, but anyway.

My sort-by options and the overall adjust-option of the folder (adjusting it as a picture-folder, or just a file-folder etc.) seems to be resetting, I want it to always sort my pictures by the date it was last changed, since I want to find the newer pictures easily. This seems to work fine with other folders, but not on this folder, since it keeps resetting, is it a useless "feature" because it's the picture folder? and can I change this somehow?

Please let me know if you need any more info to be able to answer the question correctly.

No suggestions?

No matter whether I set Windows Mail as the default or my other email client Incredimail XE Premium. when I click my Mailto: shortcut to quickly write an email, it opens OK, but only after about 15 long seconds.
I've tried switching defaults and making sure each time that both the email client and the mailto: have the correct defaults in Windows Explorer Default Programs settings.

Anything I might have missed? It only started doing this lately and before I blame something in error I'd be interested in any thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Hello Peter,

You might see if disabling the Windows Mail splash screen may help speed it up to open some.

If that doesn't help, then you may need to use one of the items in the tutorial below to fix Windows Mail.

Mine takes 2 seconds. Are you using disk cleanup and disk defrag regularly ?

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

I have a folder that is full of a lot of files including some big .avi, .mp3, .wav files.

Something has happened and I cannot open the folder.

The error message says "folder is not accessible/error performing inpage operation".

I would like to open the folder but I would settle for deleting it. I cannot delete it. The error message says "cannon delete: the folder is not empty".

When I go to props props says it has 0 bytes, 0 files, 0 everything.

When the file is selected (such as to check props) I can hear the drive grinding and it takes a minute of grinding for anything to happen.

I know the folder is still taking up space on my drive because if I go to My Computer and look at free space the space used is the same as before this problem started.

I am using Windows 2000 Professional, 5.0.2195 Service Pack 2 Build 2195.

I have a 42 Gig hard drive NTFS file system.

Need help to either delete this folder and its contents to free up space or open it and get the contents out.

Please help.

A few days ago my computer started going down hill. I cannot open things like "computer" like the icon on the desktop. If I try to open pictures or anything of the sort the computer freezes and a windows message pops up and says end task. Then most of the time it crashes the whole laptop and turns it off or resets it. From what I seem to gather by searching internet it is maybe a windows explorer virus? I'm not really sure. If you need anymore info please let me know. It is 64 bit so I cannot do the GMER rootkit scan thing
Thank you

Fresh out of box windows8 Sony Vaio Laptop showing error message when I try to open any picture files either web contents or local picture, saying "Not Implemented" error message. And no right click option available.
Can some one please help me. Thank you in advance

A:Can't open any picture files "Not Implemented" error

When you say "no right click option available," what exactly do you mean? There literally is no context menu showing at all?

Sounds fishy :/

Check out how to manually associate files: manually change file association windows 7 - Google Search
I know the query is for windows 7, but it should be identical for win8

Alternatively, for a workaround, drag them into an app, or browser to view.

Hopefully I'm posting in the correct forum section and that this isn't a topic that has been discussed frequently as I've done extensive searches and browsing before deciding to post.

So here's the problem/annoyance I'm encountering and I'm wondering if there's some sort of solution out there:

I have Vista Home Basic and IE7. I can download files quite fine, but the problem is that when I try to open the file either from the dialogue window that shows up after the download OR when the file opens automatically after a download, a new dialogue window shows up that says "Verify" (apparently while the system verifies the file for who knows what).

Now, that window showing doesn't really bother me that much, even though it does bother me, the real problem arises when you download multiple files at the same time and open those files because once the system tries to verify all those files at the same time it ends up crashing the browser.

So what I'm mainly looking for is a setting that would disable this file verification by Vista/IE7.

I have a fairly good computer, with 2GB of RAM, 2.20 Dual Core processor so I really really doubt this is a performance issue.

Thanks.

Can provide screenshots if needed.

I double-click and get "search" instead of "open"--only when I click a disk, like Hard Drive C: or Floppy A: or CD F: and so on.

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

Any ideas?

I have some files which were internet shortcuts, for some reason they are now "Website" files. I cannot open the website from them, can anyone please tell me how to convert them back to Internet shorcuts please

A:How do I convert a "Website" file back to an Internet shortcut

If you select "save as" in the browser, you will save the html file (sometimes along with associated content).

If you click and drag from the URL to the desktop, this will create a web link. You can also right-click on a web page link, and select "save link as" as another method to saving the link instead of web content.

Prior to a few weeks back where I made added a function to the folder file type, it didn't matter if I doubled clicked on a file folder on either the left hand pane or the right hand pane of Windows Explorer, Folder View. Either way opened the folder and displayed in the contents in the right hand pane.

Since I made the change below however, if I click on a folder in the left hand "Folders" pane, it works as before and opens the folder and displayed in the contents in the right hand pane.

However, if I click on any folders in the right hand (files pane) a new windows explorer window opens a displays the "my documents".

This is driving me nuts. The same thing happens if you click on a shortcut to a folder. Instead of the folder opening, it opens a new window and displays "my documents".

This problems started when I added a new function to the folder file folder file type properties to print out the contents of a folder by calling a batch file that piped the content to a file.

In the file association for file folders in the advanced section I now have three functions
- the afore mentioned 'create file list'
- explore (the default), and
- find

For the folder file type I just have:
- explore and
- open

Any suggestions on how to put things back to the way Windows Explorer always worked before make clicking folders in the right hand pane open them up properly in the same window as per clicking them on the left hand pane?

A:Windows Explorer and Folder shortcuts open to "my documents" and not the folder

Welcome to TSG....

You can try doing a system restore to a day or so before you made the change to view. It will not affect any data that you have but you might have to re-install any programs that you have had since that date.

This is an FYI,  I have resolved my problem but want to let others know the solution.

I have a Win 7 Professional, SP1 box that has a fileshare on a 2008 Enterprise server 64 bit SP2 where the user has been trying to create a folder.  Randomly she receives the "unable to create the folder "name of folder"  Too many files opened
for sharing".  This seems to be causing by the syncing utility for offline folders.  I have a fileshare on the 2008 server labled "share1" which has many folders and levels.  The allow offiline files on the fileshare was enabled and on the win7
box the fileshare was configured to synchronized.  Here is what I did to diagnose the issue.  I ran the program that creates the folder from the win7 box, then checked the UNC path from the win7 box to confirm folder is created, which it was.
I logged into the server and went to the mapped drive to that directory which the folder as not present (F5 did not show the folder)  From the server I typed the UNC path to the folder which did not exist.  Went to dos on the server to the layer
above the created folder and did a "dir" which did not show the newly created folder.  I then turned off the allow files to be available offline on the fileshare of the 2008 server.  Then I disable offline folders on the Win7 box.  After disabling
both of these the application is quickly creating the new ... Read more
