I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Blank Screen with Flashing Dash On Startup

Thats apart of the operating system, is not an error so there is nothing to fix.

UNLESS thats all you ever see, but I got the impression from the post your computer still starts just fine.

If your machine is not booting and stuck at the "flashing dash" you may need to do a system repair.

I have been having problems with my Dell Dimension 5000 since this morning, basically I switch it on and all I get is a blank blank screen with a white dash blinking in the top left corner.

I can't access safe mode or bios settings using the function keys and I can't get further then this blank black creen with flashing dash.

I have taken out my gfx card and cleaned the dust out of the fan, checked all the cable connections inside and out. I also checked other posts for solutions but could not find any that related to mine as I can't access anything. I have also checked the Dell Diagnostic lights which indicate:

Other failure has occurred.
Ensure that the cables are properly connected to the system board from the hard drive, CD drive, and DVD drive.
Check the computer message that appears on your monitor screen.
If the problem persists, contact Dell.

Dell don't seem helpful as the computer is out of warrenty and I even get passed around or hung up on. Only thing I can think of is that my hard drive might of gone as it makes a reading noise about five times then I hear nothing even though I replaced the HD about two months ago.

Sorry for the essay, hope I can sort it out!!

I have an Hp pavilion a1226n desktop computer and shut off the power this morning during a bad storm. I used the regular procedures and shut it down correctly, but when i tried to boot it up earlier this morning, the only thing that comes up is a blank black screen with a flashing white dash in the upper left hand corner. I have already tried to remove reset the BIOS by removing the battery and then later restarting, but it did not help at all. Also, it wont even boot far enough for me to start in safe/real mode. Any suggestions?

Hi sherm12789 and welcome to TSF

Start up your computer by either tapping the F1, F2, F4, F6, F8, F10, F11, F12, or Delete keys to access the systems BIOS. For the exact information on what key to start up the System BIOS refer back to Original Manufacturer System Documentation.

After getting into the BIOS, look for a page that would have something like, eg. PC Health Screen or System Monitoring Page. When you have found a page similar to this post back what the BIOS says for your temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds.

Go into your BIOS and verify that the hard drive is listed as the first boot device. If it is, it sounds like your mbr is corrupt, or your hard drive is damagedI'm still learning Vista, not quite sure if fixmbr is the same or not. I've been having this issue for sometime now. . . My laptop allows me to turn it on and once I do the screen remains blank while the caps lock is flashing once every 3-4 seconds and the f10 key has a orange led light on. After leaving it on for a minute or 3 hoping that the screen turns on, the computer then just turns off. My laptop has been taken to repair shop but still has the same issues. I have also tried about almost everything i have read online on the forums with others who have the same issue. The weird thing is i'll pay no attention to my computer for about a day or two after constantly trying to get it to work and it'll then suddenly turn on with a message saying that there is a thermal issue with the fan or something.? I would appreciate if someone would help me fix this situation so that i can no longer deal with it in the future. Thanks!

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with an upgrade to windows 7 from vista. Yesterday my computer was really slow so I reset it to try and speed it up. I got passed the Vaio screen but then came the black screen with the blinking dash on the top right corner. The only thing I can enter is BIOS with F2 nothing else works. I can't enter safe mode or anything else. I've tried a few things, but nothing works.

1. Reseting default values in BIOS
2. Removing everything but internal Hard Drive in boot menu.

I have a windows & start up disc

3. Ran Startup Repair: Says couldn't detect a problem if recently attached device then remove it. ( Nothings Connected)
4. System restore ( was successfull but still no go)
5. Ran chkdsk & chkdsk/r from command prompt option

I also contacted Sony Support and with the 15 minutes alotted

6. Reseated memory

I just want to be able to get into the computer one more time so I can transfer my music and some other important files to my External Hard Drive. Please HELP!!! Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Upon a rexent start up, after turning it off last night normally, it ceased functioning.
Now after the IBM Thinkpad start screen it merely displays a flashing white dash in the upper left corner. I have some files on there that hadn't been backed up. (I back up every Friday it died on a Thursday of all the rotten luck.) Suggestions about what i can do to get it working again?

A:Flashing Dash

Take the drive out, mount it in an external enclosure, attach it to a working computer by USB cord and copy out files that you can access. After that run hard drive diagnostic utilities like hitach drive fitness test and check to make sure it is completely fine before reinstalling in the original computer. You can try booting into safe mode, or last known good configuration or you can try a repair install of the OS. If nothing else works, format and reinstall the OS from scratch.

Hello,

Before reading the below paragraph NOTE: I used the windows 7 upgrade advisor to tell me if there are any compatibility problems and nothing came in.

I recently installed Windows 7 on my Acer Aspire 6530 and it worked great, no problems at all! I thought it was amazing due to microsoft's previous attempts. Anyway in the excitment I attempt to upgrade my other Acer Aspire 7720 which also is a laptop, and I boot it while on the computer so I can save my files, and then it booted with a black screen with a flashing white dash, so I attempted to install Windows 7 by simply booting it with a CD, after all of that, it has the same result.

Obviously all my files are gone, but I was smart enough to make a back-up which it is now on, but what I want to know is there is anyway to fix it so I CAN use Windows 7, there shouldn't be any problems upgrading my system, what has gone wrong?

Maybe clearing the BIOS could help. Look at the motherboard menu, there should be a jumper which you can set to clear the BIOS.

If you can still enter the BIOS by pressing a certain key on startup, then you can choose Load BIOS defaults or some similar setting.

I had to take my laptop almost completely apart to fix a small problem (the headphone port was crooked and I pushed it back in place). When I put it back together I apparently missed something... When I turn it on, the 3 keyboard lights flash repetitively. There are no beeps. The lights under the screen do work, but the screen is blank, and a fan is working. There are other fans not spinning but I don't think they are supposed to be active when the computer is idle anyway(?) I get the same results whether I use the battery or the power supply. Does anyone know what it means? There doesn't seem to be anything left disconnected... where do I look for the problem?

The laptop is a Hypersonic Aviator EX7, AKA Clevo D900T.

A:Blank screen and lights flashing

It is extremely difficult to disassemble and reassemble a laptop and have it still work, unless you do it exactly as per the service manual steps. Otherwise damage can result.

Did you follow a service manual procedure or just by "try it and see"?

All I can suggest is that you reverse the process, trying to power it up at the earliest possibility before full reassembly, in case a step in the process you follow is causing a problem.

The symptoms suggest that as soon as the system tries to POST, something is forcing a reset. But to be honest, the possibilities are wide ranging. On the basis you cannot now make it worse, simply do it again making sure all cables are plugged in and that nothing is trapped under a screw.

I have an acer extensa with windows vista OEM which I think is home edition. Last week I got a message saying that my computer had a trojan, so I opened up malware to scan for it. I came back about 2 hours later and my computer screen was blank with blinking cursor at top of the page. Over the past several weeks I have been getting those viruses that fake people out into thinking they have to buy a software online to clean up. I was aware of this so when I would get one I would have to use restore point to get my computer back up and running. The problem is that if I try to go to the F8 screen to start in safe mode it will not birng up that screen it just goes back to blank page with cursor. I am able to press F2 and get system settings screen and also F12 to get boot screen. Is there a different way to get to the screen that F8 brings up? WHen i bought my laptop it did not come with recovery disk or windows vista disk. Also, I am not sure if my vista was 32 bit or 64 bit and am not able to find this out since I cannot load windows. Is there a way to find this out. Also, I had windows vista SP1. Since I cannot get a command prompt I cannot get into DOS to at least do a disk check. I had someone suggest that I download ubuntu which will boot up my computer. Is this a good idea? Any help would be appreciatied.

SO my sons laptop started to boot to a black screen with a mouse cursor. I can see the screen to select to boot from safe mode etc. but once the little animated windows logo stops it goes to a complete black screen with a working mouse cursor.

The laptop in question is... Acer Aspire-5560-sb256, AMD quad core A6-3400m, AMD radeon HD6520G.

I went to the Acer website and spent hours there looking on how to flash a bios but all of it required me to be in windows to do it. i get the impression the video works because i see the Windows animated logo and the mouse cursor works. Maybe i am wrong ?

I purchased a external hard drive enclosure and then scanned the laptops hdd on my computer with MSSE and Super anti spyware, were a few bad items but nothing alarming, i was able to transfer a few large game files to and from the drive with zero issues. So i am reasonably sure its not a drive problem.

I removed and re-seated the ram from the laptop, and it still seems to be fine.

I tried booting from all the safe mode selections and without safe-mode, neither of them resolve this issue.

As far as i can tell i have tried all the solutions i could think of, i know enough about computers to basically get myself into trouble Seriously all i know about them is from being an avid PC game player, but i know enough to take apart a computer and put it all back, its really the software side that stumps me the most.

Any assistance with my problem would be greatly appreciated, so thank you in... Read more

Hello, my Toshiba laptop (windows XP) has just recently crashed (I'm using my sister's computer now). I will try to explain this in as much detail as I can as I know it helps. I was on the internet and then my computer froze, my mouse wasn't moving, Ctrl+Alt+Delete wasn't working, Escape wasn't working. I couldn't do anything, so I switched it off manually. Then, I waited about 10 seconds and then turned it on. The Toshiba logo appeared as normal but then, instead of loading windows, it loaded a black screen and a flashing cursor was in the top-left corner. I couldn't type or anything. So again, I turned my computer off manually and then on again, and the Toshiba logo appeared, then I noticed on the bottom of the screen, it said something like: Press F2 for setup or F12 for boot device setup. So, first I tried pressing F2 (setup), this didn't help, it just said please wait at the bottom and then loaded a black screen. So, I turned off my computer manually again and then turned it on, this time I pressed F12. It loaded a menu with three options:
HDD HTS541060G9ATOO-(PM)
CD/DVD MATSHITADVD-RAM UJ-841S-(SM)
LAN

I tried all of them and it just came up with a black screen.
My mother phoned some computer tech support helpline (thetechguys.com) and told them, they just told her to try and get into setup (F2) but she told them that it wasn't working and they said that it was probably a problem with a computer part and that she should take it in for repair but it would cost ?2... Hi out there, hope someone can help me.

I have an older Dell Dimension 8100 PC, originally configured with one 40 GB HHD. It is an 80528 processor running at 1.5 GHz. Over time I have upgraded RAM to 768 MB, added a 120 GB Western Digital HDD (now the primary drive) when I had the same problem I do now, and also upgraded the system from WIN 2000 to a completely new install of XP Pro.

The other day, apparently all by itself, it just rebooted. Unfortunately, it never got any further in the boot process than the DELL Logo screen. The screen went black and all I have now is a flashing cursor in the upper left corner.

This is the same thing that happened a year or so ago. At that time I added the new 120 GB primary HDD, leaving the older 40 GB as a slave. After installing the new HDD, formatting it and installing the system, I had access to the directory on the older drive. Looking at the old drive with Windows Explorer, all the directories and files seemed to be intact. I copied over all my data files, installed all my software and made sure everything was working and then formatted the original drive, including a system installation in case I ever had to use it as a bootable drive. Well now that the system would not boot off the new drive, I switched them around, and guess what? The drive seems to be intact, except that it will not boot. All I get is the flashing cursor. I have used the “Recovery Console” to write a new Boot Sector with no success.

Welcome to TSG....

You might have to remove the hard drive from this computer and install it in another computer as a slave drive and after it is able to be accessed by Windows on that computer you will have to manually backup all of your important data that you have to another media like CD-R's, DVD or Thumb drive. Then when this is done return it to the original computer as a master drive on the primary IDE cable and do the following:

For this you will need the recovery disks from Dell, If you do not have them you can order them thru the following link:

Hello,
I have a Dell laptop Inspiron 8500 that I used extensively for work. 2ghz cpu P4m, 2gig ram, 160gig hitachi HD.

A couple of times in the past few months it has occasionally came up with only a flashing cursor in the top left. Now it does it once a week at least. I've cannot boot into safe mode. The bios seetings seem ok. I can only boot from a bootable ISO CD.

To workaround so far, when this happens: I remove the laptop drive then use anouther computer to read the drive using a usb to mini IDE adapter to read off my recent work, I run the Hitachi factory tests for this drive via bootable ISO: It always passes fine. The drive reads fine too.
Then I use "Acronis True Image home" to restore the drive back to the last backup( which I do 2 weekly now because of this ) It takes 3hours to restore the image, and then I copy back my recent work , and all works fine for about a week.

I bought "ASO advanced Sytem Optimizer" and cleaned up the registry, and defragged the drive using "AShampoo Magic Defreg". I was excited because I thought it was a registry problem or fragmentation issue.

It worked fine all week and seems faster even. I was happy.

Today it did the same no-boot thing when I when to to boot up. Blank screen with flashing cursor in the top left.

It really seems like something is killing either the registry, mbr, or bootloader on powerdown.

I'm running the Dell diags disk and it all passes. I can boot and restore ... Read more

to transfer upgrade( awhile back ) from an 80gig drive to this 160gig
drive. All was well until these issues popped up. I think as the drive
utililization grew, I started having problems with my bios's lack of
LBA48( >137 gig ) support. It's almost like I'm getting address
aliasing/wrap around problems after the drive started filling up. For
the Inspiron 8500 there is no bios yet that handles LBA48 correctly, so
I downsized my partition to 100gigs using Disk Manager and all seems to
be well so far. If you search on this problem, it seems it's common on
a lot of laptops that were made before 2004 and/or people not updating
their bios. I've not heard this solution, so I hope it gets
investigated more. I welcome comments on this !! -Lee

So my Asus boots to this screen after crashing. I can enter the setup with F2 and all that. this is a Laptop btw. the G60J model.

now asus has a recovery hard disk or something that resets it to factory settings and reinstalls all of the drivers and whatnot.

However since I have so m uch crap on my PC Im always deleteing things out of the hard drive from windows 7. I didnt think it was possible to delete this factory restore thing like that. Im not sure If I did, all I know is that its not working when I hit F9 at the boot screen. I fear my OS is broken. I downloaded a windows 7 64 bit Iso and used it to see If i could et my OS working but not a thing happend.

Im wondering if there is anyway I can get a recovery disk, or even a ISO of the disk to boot my PC bacck up. Im real short on cash and cannot afford best buys diagnostics along with repair.

any tips on recovering windows 7 or anything that anyone knows about tthis would be really appreciated.

thanks tech dudes

A:Asus boots with blank screen with flashing cursor

Hi -

Try pressing the F9 key during boot-up to access the recovery partition.

If no-go, contact Asus support about purchasing a set of recovery discs. HP, Dell, most others charge about $25 for replacement media.

Need help..my computer will not boot up ,,,all i get is that it detects the hardware then the flashing cursor on the top left side of screen. NO windows logo. I have read the other similar posts but for some reason i can not get into safe mode. I have an old asus a7v8x-mx motherboard with a amd 2100. I have reformatted another harddrive i had laying around and it works great with the computer so that eliminates everything but the harddrive i originally had in there. i want the information on that harddrive so reformatting that one is out of the question. I have the operating system disk , i was thinking of repairing it but i am not sure??????Any help will do Thanks

A:flashing cursor top left side of blank screen

Install your old hard "damaged" drive as a Slave. Use you reformatted drive as master and boot the OS from it. Then see if you can read your Slave drive and get what you need off it.

If not then at least you can run some dignostics from your master and see if you can get the corrupted one working.

Good luck

Not sure what happend. May have a bad battery. problem exists with or without the battery. The screen is blank and the curser in the top left of the screen flashes. When I power up, if I keep pressing the F2 key I can get to advanced diagnostics.Note sure if I have 32 or 64 bit.

Hey,

I've done a search for this but it's kind of a hard one to put in to keywords without getting tonnes of results with radically different problems. I bought a new computer a few months ago and bought Vista Ultimate OEM but I still needed XP for work so I just put my old XP harddrive in, played around with installing some drivers and everything worked swell. I had some free time on the weekend though and decided I may as well install Vista now. I chucked the DVD in and booted from it, then began the installation. I've got 3 hard drives, one of them is XP, one is for the bulk of my files and finally one that I cleared everything off of, ready to be formatted and have Vista put on. The installation seems to have gone fine, it unpacked all the files and installed everything. It rebooted, assumedly at the end (I didn't hang around to watch it install for half an hour) and booted in to XP. Cool, so I rebooted again, went to the boot menu and selected the Vista hard drive and then nothing happens. I get a black screen with a white blinking "_" cursor. I went back in to XP and looked on the Vista harddrive and it appeared to have the entire file structure on it. So is there any advice you can give? I'm not quite sure what else to try other than do a completely fresh install.

My computer: Asus Striker Extreme, Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, XFX 8800 GTX, 2GB Crucial Ballistix + 2 IDE and 1 SATA drive

A:Vista Ultima - Blank screen of first boot with a flashing cursor

sounds like your computer went to sleep after the install and now cannot wake up - common vista problem - go into BIOS and play around with sleep options i find s3 works best usually or turn sleep off - you should also read the excellent sleep tutorials on this website - you can probably run powercfg from xp and see sleep options - hope this is helpful

Try booting up and hitting the F8 key. Then choose the Last Known Good Config option and see what that does for you.

Hello Guys,

I am having a few problems with the Samsung Magician program since replacing my video card and just wondered if any one else has had these problems.

Firstly if the Samsung Magician SSD program is running in the system try and I start Steam then Bioshock Infinite the game will open for about 0.5-1 second then minimise itself to the task bar, if I click it in the taskbar it will go full screen for about 0.5-1 second again then minimise itself straight away and so on. If I shut down the Magician program I can maximise the window full screen and it will play Bioshock normal.
Also another problem has developed since I have fitted a new video card and I'm not sure if the problem is the video card or the Samsung Magician software, When I open the Magician program my monitor screen will go blank for about 1-2 seconds then return to the normal desktop, this will also happen when the ?refresh drive information? button is pressed at the bottom of the Magician window. The blank flash will also occasionally happen when I play a small video recorded from my camera or phone. I don't get any problems when playing Bioshock or Metro Last light with the settings set high so I don't think it is a hardware problem with the video card or PSU.

I didn't have any of these issues with my old video card (Gigabyte 9800GTX (GV-NX98X512H-B)512 MB)

I am running Windows 8 Pro 64 bit with all updates applied, my video card is a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 2GB PCI-Express 3.0 HDMI OC running ... Read more

Hello Guys,

I have recently installed a new Video Card a Gigabyte GeForce 660 GTX, when I'm playing video's or if I open the Geforce Experience program from the task bar the screen goes blank for about a second then returns to normal, it always seems to happen when I get the program to check for updates. I am using the latest driver 320.49.

When I play games there's no problem occur so I don't think it's the card it's self, I suspect it's something to do with the program.

I just wondered if anyone else is having this problem?

Thanks

Tony

Just curious; do you get a pop-up message indicating that your driver has stopped working momentarily but has recovered? Lower-left side of screen from task manager?

Hey everybody,

Im going crazy cause my computer will not make it past the initial dell startup screen with the two options of pressing F2 or F12. After it loads that page it simply goes to a blank screen with a flashing underscore ( _ )

I would be extremely grateful if anyone can find me a solution to this problem. Ive tried both F2 and F12 and changed just about every setting i could think of including the order of process to boot. I ran diagnostics and nothing worked. I removed the battery and ran off of a/c power and still nothing. I also unplugged everything from the usb ports.

Some info about my computer: dell inspiron 1525 running on windows vista

Thank you to anyone who can help

Sounds like you are experiencing hard drive failure, or hard drive corruption. I just repaired a computer with the exactly same issue, and realized that the partition tables on the drive was corrupted. Then after further diagnosis, realized that the partition tables were corrupted due to the drive physically failing.

Do you have a Dell partition for the hard drive utility?
---

Starting Dell Diagnostics From Your Hard Drive

The Dell Diagnostics is located on a hidden
diagnostic utility partition on your hard drive.
NOTE: If your computer cannot display a
screen image, see “Contacting Dell” on
page 50.
1. Ensure that the computer is connected to an
electrical outlet that is known to be working
properly.
2. Turn on (or restart) your computer.
3. When the DELL™ logo appears, press <F12>
immediately. Select Diagnostics from the
boot menu and press <Enter>.
NOTE: If you wait too long and the operating
system logo appears, continue to wait until
you see the Microsoft® Windows® desktop;
then, shut down your computer and try again.
NOTE: If you see a message stating that no
diagnostics utility partition has been found,
run the Dell Diagnostics from the Drivers
and Utilities media.

Okay here is what is happening, I just cleaned up a PC that I own Windows ME OS, more or less a Dell Machine, with a couple of bits added.

Anyway after I was finished cleaning it up I brought it up to the house. It started up fine, Detected everything (from what I can see) but then as soon as it starts to go to the Desktop the Monitor goes blank and all the lights on the Monitor are flashing. I could not figure out what the problem is so I re-started and booted in Safe Mode which worked, I then went to look for the Drivers but it did not detect the Monitor or have drivers available for it (in Safe Mode - is this normal?), I think it is a case that some of the Drivers have been deleted.

So my questions are....

- Is it missing Drivers?
- If so where can I get them?
- Any other Ideas?

Thanks,

Alan

A:Start up Problem - Monitor Lights all flashing - blank screen

Good Evening Alan, I understand you can successfully boot into safe mode.
Understand that in safe mode a basic driver is used to allow video display.

Your symptom is similar to an out of range kind of problem as though you might be using an old monitor where sometime previously you may have had a more modern one and have increased the video settings which is unsuitable for the current one.

Whilst in Safe Mode, go to the control panel > Display > Settings and knock the screen size and colour settings back to say, the lowest available.

See if that allows windows to normally boot, you can increase the settings later if possible.

qldit.
