BSOD with both GPUs on Lenovo Y580

Q: BSOD with both GPUs on Lenovo Y580

Hi! At the start I'll mention that I am an "IT guy" (actually IT student)  so I have some higher than basic knowledge about the stuff going on with my computers but now even I am lost... I will start from the very beggining of my troubles - that might be a long story!

So, one day (quite a bit ago) I was playing League of Legends with friends like I did for over a year after purchasing my Y580 and the in-game "bug splat" error occured. It is not something unusual, it happens to people a lot in this particular game so I was like "meh, again they f*** up something with the patch". Then the system notification told me that "driver stopped working but has recovered" or something like that, which was a first time for me. I googled the problem but before I could read anything the screen froze and I had a first BSOD since installing Windows 8 (and I have it for a year straight now). It was IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL pointing at nvlddmkm.sys, part of Nvidia drivers.

I started doing obvious things - ran Windows in safe mode, everything was working fine. Then I removed Nvidia drivers completely, including registry entries and stuff. System loded in normal mode and was working - previously the blue screen was appearing before my Windows 8 login page even loaded. I managed to play games on Intel HD GPU and do my usuall stuff without any problems - as expected to be honest.

I did a memtest back then, also did it few days ago for 6+ hours without any errors. I also ran sfc /scannow and chdksk without errors if I am not wrong.

Then I tried installing various Nvidia drivers. No success. Next - I installed the drivers that came with laptop on CD. Quite old, 2xx.xx ones. The system loaded, I logged in all happy, but then when I entered Nvidia Control Panel the BSOD appeared again... I decided to format my drive and installed Windows 8.1 (about which I kind of forgot, so that's why 8.1 not back to 8 - I was about to upgrade anyway, so seemd like not bad opportunity  - not perfect one I have to admit). Blue screen again, same thing. I did complete system reset, then started to install the Windows 8.1 drivers from Lenovo's site with Nvidia ones being last and... suprise, suprise, BSOD appeared before the installation even finished.

So then I tried disabling the Nvidia GPU with drivers running, it launched to Windows and no BSOD, but I think that doesn't change anything. I've read A LOT threads about those kind of issues, but nothing seems to be like mine to be honest So I left my GTX 660M disabled - I'm an IT student as I mentioned so I can't afford to be left without a laptop for even a few days, so I didn't send it to service yet.

Now the funny part - I was playing LoL on Intel card for almost 2 months now since the GeForce BSOD occured. And recently I installed Path of Exile, which gives me the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSODs after 5-10 minutes into the game (even on lowest graphics settings)! :D (League is running ok on pretty high details... so probably not temperature related? I don't really know now...)

What would you advise me to do? Shall I run all system files checks and chdksk again? Is this software or hardware issue? I'd just like to fix it if it's software, but I tried SO MANY things already that I'm closer to saying it's hardware stuff, but maybe you guys will be able to help me and maybe it will be a software issue - so help me God! :D

I'm attaching my minidump folder zipped, I will appreciate ANY help, thanks a lot in advance just for reading my story, thanks even more if you will try to help me!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi David

Since you are familiar with computers, i will cut the crap and go directly to the troubleshooting. Please follow the below steps.

1. First uninstall both "Intel" and "Nvidia" drivers completely from the system. Laptops require tweaked drivers  specifically created for them rather than generic ones. If the Nividia adapter is disabled via BIOS, please enable it.

2. Then uninstall "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" driver and "Intel Wireless LAN driver" completely. Current versions are not compatible with "Win 8.1".

I've got a used Lenovo Y580 that crashes frequently when a fair portion of its memory is being used, such as installers, or running games. It crashes to a BSOD with an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL code. I've looked in the drivers section and there aren't a lot of drivers available for the Y580. I downloaded the ones that apply to my laptop but I'm still having the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated with this as I can't get much work done with it in this condition.

Hi,

I own a Y580-M772CMH 15.6FHD/i7-3610QM/8G/ laptop with Windows 7 and a few weeks ago I used Ccleaner to clean the registry. Like the dumb stupid person I am I did not pay attention to what it was "cleaning".

Next time I booted up my Laptop it failed to start Windows and gave the following message:

Check cable connection!
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

So next time I pressed F2 while booting to see:

Boot Device Priority
Internal HDD: SAMSUNG MZMPC064HBDR-000L1
SATA HDD: ST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB
SATA ODD: Optiarc BD ROM BC-5550H
Network Boot: Atheros Boot Agent

To me it looked like I still had both disks working so I put in a Windows ISO before boot to see if I could repair. The System Recovery Options screen showed me no known existing OS on the device.

So I powered down and used One Key Recovery which told me when I clicked to restore to factory conditions that the partition layout has changed.

Finally I used a bootable Partition Wizard and that showed me this:

Note the negative used value at disk 1.
To my layman's eyes it seems like the SSD and HDD, that are normally combined by a Lenovo software Raid are now separate. And something I deleted with Ccleaner by accident caused it (probably).

Main thing is, I actually don't know what the problem is and so don't know how to proceed.

I'm afraid my data is lost to me, which isn't a terrible loss, but am I correct in assuming... Read more

Hello, As stated in the title, I have a Lenovo IdeaPad y580. I purchased it approximately three-and-a-half years ago, and only now is it really beginning to chug durings its processes. Point is, I want it to last perhaps another half year or so while I finish saving up for another computer. As a gamer, I'm fine with the limitations of the GPU, but sometimes my laptop legitimately has issues processing stuff, such as loading Google Chrome properly. I know enough about Windows to clean out viral matter and uninstall programs that I don't use that are running in the back. But does anyone have any tips or tricks to make this hunk of junk last maybe six more months before it becomes unusable?TL;DR I need to make my laptop run at least a reasonably sub-average to average level for six more months. Any tips are appreciated.

Hi,I have huge problem which is driving me nuts. My laptop isn't charging well. It randomly disconnects AC adaptor. I'll try to discribe this situation in detail:First time it was about 6 months ago. I was using my laptop without battery (i think i was playing Skyrim or something) and my laptop just turn off (immediately, just black screen and completly off at that point). I thought it was no big deal, so i powered up laptop again and enjoyed my gameplay. After few days it happened again. And it was happening often and often. Until my laptop started doing this even when i was using word or surfing the web or even wasn't doing anything. Then i plugged my battery in. What i realized, that my laptop just disconnect AC and at the front/bottom where the indication lights are, the solid white battery light (2nd from left) turns into blinking red/orange. So i plug off AC and stick it right back and laptop is charging again. But i can't do this everytime it happens, it is really frustrating and messes with laptop's performance.Basically i can't use my laptop normaly. Somethimes it stays powered half of day without any faults (ofcourse i'm not talking about gaming, i forgot it long time ago), sometimes it disconnect charging 2-3 times per minute. Here is what i tried to do:-Clean everything inside my laptop (dust, dirt)-Reinstall Windows-Reapply thermal compound-Power drain (when battery and AC isn't plugged and laptop is turned off, you hold power buttom for about 30 sec)-Voltage chec... I have Lenovo Y580 and a few months ago I updated my bios to version 5DCN40WW(v2.07), i downloaded it from Lenovo support website (in this time i got windows 7), then i decide to run Windows 8, but this bios was purposed for Windows 7 and now i cant find 'actualization' to my old bios wich was purposeed to Windows 8, I'm looking for version 5DCN89WW of bios to this Lenovo. Now I have 2-3 bsods a day, even after format, I've updated my drivers using SlimDrivers and downloaded actual drivers from Intel website,on the Intel website I had an information that product has been detected as Kontroler Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30) but this device is unknown or unsupported (current driver:2.1.0.16) and same thing with Audio Driver for Intel Desktop Board, product detected: Sound Bluetooth (current driver: 12.0.0.2951).

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

AFAIK, you have the latest BIOS for your system.
Here's a link to it: BIOS Update for Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - IdeaPad Y480, Y580

Out of 17 memory dumps there were 7 different BSOD error codes. The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers)
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

You can get a head start on the hardware diagnostics if you'd like - they are located here: Hardware Diagnostics

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).

Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your sys... Read more

I currently have a Lenovo Y580 Laptop computer with a dvd burner optical drive. I am wanting a blu ray burner where I can watch iblu-ray movies, and occasionally burn files to a Blu ray disk. I have found this drive, but I'm not sure whether it is compatible. It appears there are several different sizes for optical drives. Any idea whether this will physically fit in my laptop? Thanks for your assistance.

A:Blu Ray Burner for Lenovo Y580 Laptop

Unless it is designed for that machine, and it states that it will work, I doubt very much that you can use it. Laptops, in particular, are very proprietary in hardware, and though some few standard pieces may be interchangeable, for the most part, even the connections for optical drives are often the company's own. You'll need to get a drive from the manufacturer or one that they say will work. (Or advice from someone who has actually gotten one to fit.)

Alternatively, you could look into an external case with a USB connection for a BluRay drive. Since most people rarely use them, except for data storage (double-sided ones can hold 50 GB's which makes a great storage medium) or videos, and they are expensive, it may be best to buy just one that can be used on all machines and keep for future ones. I have found no problems with speed playing BluRay over a USB 2.0 connection (In the worst case, the contents could be copied to your hard drive before playing, anyway, though I have never had to do that). And, of course, since a drive that supports all optical media for both reading and burning is only slightly more expensive than those that support fewer types, it is worth the money to get a good drive. Just another idea...............

Hello, Recently I noticed that some keys on my keyboard stopped working. First of all I found that ESC key does not work. Then I did an online test (http://www.keyboardtester.com/) and found that following keys does not work : esc, f4, f5, f6, f7, alt (left to the space). After some time esc key started to work for a few minutes but then it stopped once again. Esc key also didn't work in the BIOS. Looks like a hardware failure, but is it possible that only some keys stopped to work? I would be very grateful for any advice. Thanks

Hello, I recently upgraded my home internet to a 5GHz dual band connection which I came to learn could not be utilized by my Lenovo Y580s wifi adapater : Intel Centrino 2200N. In order to utilize my new internet, I purchased a USB dual band a/c dongle at BestBuy for $30, the only drawback being a small piece constantly plugged in / using one of my USB ports (not a big deal). I was able to connect with this device at 5ghz and for the past few months everything was fine and I received blazing fast internet using this USB as my wifi. Recently I noticed I I've been losing connection speed and internet. My transfer rate jumps from 6MBs to 433 MBs as and everywhere in between while connected at 5ghz, and figured my usb dongle might be faulty. I unplugged the device to test it, and connected using the computer's normal wifi over the 2.4Ghz channel. To my surprise, while the signal was strong, my internet speeds were also jumping between 1mbs and 60mbs, essentially the same thing that was happening while using the 5ghz USB. In an effort to trouble shoot on my own, I did the following:- Did a full mallware / virus check ( was clean )- I live in a Condo so I installed INSIDDER software to check my wifi channels: no real problems there- Connected several other devices using both the 2.4 and 5ghz connection, including laptops and Iphones/Ipads. Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

I assume that you are trying to replace a missing key cap on your keyboard.  Since there appears to be three different style hinge assemblies for your model, the best way to find the proper replacement is to view your missing key's hinge. You can then compare it to the laptop key seller's images on their website.

Can you post a picture here?  That would assist others in helping you choose the right replacement.

I've been using this laptop for around a year or so now, and it's worked perfectly up until this point in time.  The issue that I'm currently having is entirely mechanical. At the moment, my keyboard is intact and works just fine. However, if I press a key, (mainly the 'e' key) off-center, it pops the entire key up and I have to click it into place. It's not life-threatening or crucial to the machine's function, but when I am busy typing papers or lesson plans, having a key on the most constantly used vowel key continually pop up really puts a dampener in things. I've taken the key out and have tried to click it back in. While I can't see what's going on (given that there's a key in the way!), I can most certainly feel it clicking into place twice, both clicks stemming from the right side of the 'e' key. It seems that, to the best of my knowledge, only two out of four prongs that are meant to keep the key in place and in line are actually snapping and holding the key down. Whenever I type off-center and to the right, the entire left side of the key snaps up and must be pushed back into place. I'm wondering if there's anything I can or should do. Given that I've had my machine for over a year now, I'm unsure if my warranty still covers it (speaking of, is there a way to check warranty status online?). Please, if anyone has any advice on how to fix or replace a busted key/keyboard, please, let me know!

A:Lenovo Ideapad Y580 - Keyboard Issue

A replacement keyboard (chicony, oki, or dafon are the makers - be sure to look for the manufacturer label and p/n right below the lenovo p/n on the back to get a genuine keyboard) would make a good spares, they are about $30 on ebay. I replaced a broken key on a few different laptops but much prefer to swap out the entire keyboard.  Once a single key goes bad it's likely that more keys will start to fail (note that 'e' is perhaps the most commonly used key on your keyboard because it's the most popular vowel.  Other popular keys like 't' might be failing sometime soon).  So I would suggest you buy a spare keyboard and save it until you can't live without it, the procedure to replace the keyboard is a 10 minute swap. If you want to replace a key, a sharp tipped (xacto-style) knife blade, and a loupe (magnifying lens) are important accessories.  Buy from a reputable site which has good instructions ( http://www.laptopkey.com/ ).  Unfortunately, the key and hinge are manufacturer-specific (OKI, Chicony, Dafon, see above) so you will need to determine it from the guide on www.laptopkey.com.  When I fixed our Acer c720 I also used needlenose pliers to bend a metal tab back into place, the key hinge wasn't seating correctly because the metal tab had bent and was open too wide.  The Acer c720 has a nightmare keyboard to replace with 75 different locking plastic tabs that bind it to the undersize of the palmrest, so i had little choi... Alright, so early I tried to overclock my Nvidia GTX 660m Card, and it worked. the base clock speed is 835mhz, and the memory is 2500mhz. I OC'd the clock speed to 970mhz, and the memory to 3000mhz. It all worked fine, and boosted my gaming framerate quite a bit in PlanetSide 2 and Skyrim. ( I used NvidiaInspector to overclock, btw.) I went back to the overclocking interface, and accidentally set the memory rate to around +1300mhz. I then, without realizing, clicked on set OC settings, and it crashed my card. It rebooted, but now whenever I go into Nvidia Inspector to check my clock/mem speed, they're both set on 405mhz while idle or if there's a high load on my card. It's been stuck like this for a few hours, and I've tried several tweaks to fix it, including a reboot, rolling back the drivers, and then reinstalling the drivers, etc., with no resolve. I really need some help, as this is affecting my gaming horribly, and I'm getting terrible framerates. Please give suggestions/fixes as quickly as possible!

Thanks,

I've searched all over from http://www.eightforums.com to lenovo forums. I've called support and they demand a fee to provide me support for my brand new laptop. I'm desperate for a solution because I have exhausted all more likely resources for solutions to my problem. My problem is that the option to burn factory reinstall discs have been removed. In the windows 7 version of this laptop, One Key Recovery provided this option. For win 7 laptops, this allowed people to reinstall the OEM OS on their msata SSD. Now that option is not there. I've burned a system image disc set, I burned a bootable system repair disc. I created a recovery flash drive on a usb stick. Neither of these windows 8 options allowed me to recover to a new drive on the same laptop. I really really hope someone can help me. This is ridiculous.

Hey all, I recently installed an SSD in my old y580 laptop and reinstalled windows 10 but windows is registering the touchpad as a mouse plugged into the PS/2 port. As such, the touchpad inputs are far from optimized and no multi-finger gestures are being recognized (including scrolling  ). The previous HDD recently died but definitely used elan/synaptics drivers. I've had this problem occur on other Lenovo laptops and I've seen others posting about it on here, but never for the y580 and I've never been able to solve it. I've downloaded all of the touchpad drivers on the support page for my serial number but none of them go up to windows 10 and all of them result in an error message that reads that the Realtek Bluetooth Suite isn't compatible with this version of windows. I've also downloaded 15-20 different drivers for windows 10 elan/synaptics touchpads from varying newer lenovo laptops but none of them recognize my touchpad either. Any help would be super appreciated.

It required that I remove the current installed version of PowerDVD in order to install the patch. After the installer wiped that from my computer and began to install the patch, I received a message stating that "This software can only be installed on a Lenovo system." This was a patch file that the program sent me to, called "PowerDVD_v5630_RiTA10(Lenovo)(PDVDServDelayStartup)_DVD130802-14.exe" After looking at this, I went through the knowledge base and found that there is another file linked for updating the PowerDvd software called "Lenovo.Lenovo_RiTA10_v_DVD110707-07.exe". When I tried to run this I get the following error:"Cannot install the patch.Either this patch is not intended for your version of PowerDVD 10or your system does not havea previous version of PowerDVD 10 installed. The patch installation will abort." Of course I don't have any previous version of PowerDVD 10 installed, because the other patch uninstalled it in order to install. Now I am stuck without the DVD software in this terrible Windows 8 environment. I even tried VLC player and the video is cut off. This is very frustrating. This is on my IdeaPad Y580. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

A:Y580 PowerDVD 10 Update Won't Install "Not a Lenovo Computer"

Since no one is of help it seems at technical support and I finally had some time for this, I was able to track down how to solve this. I used downloaded the installer for PowerDVD 10 from lenovo and then had to hack it. First run the installer (IN12STW153WW5.exe).After the installer fails, it will have dumped the files into C:\drivers\PowerDVD 10 BD\ (or replace C: with system drive I suppose).Edit the file Custom.ini (right click -> Edit)Change the line CLScan=LEGEND Dragon to CLScan=lenovoSave the file.Run setup.exe You can also skip running the installer and instead use a program like 7zip (or another compression program) to unzip the IN12STW153WW5.exe contents into a folder. Then go into the folder you extracted to and modify the file inside there.

Hi all;
Need to ask how to hid all the partitions in the factory installed HDD for Lenovo Y580.

This is the scenario.
Firstly, i successfully migrated all of the following partitions:
OEM/Hidden partition,
C partition: boot drive/ program files and data drive &
D partition: containing drivers

from my Lenovo factory installed HDD to the SSD and to use the SSD as the primary boot drive . Now, i plan to use the factory installed HDD as my data drive. (I am using a caddy tray for this whereby i plan to swap out the optical drive and pluck in the Lenovo factory installed HDD). However, for "safety reasons" i do not plan to re-format the entire factory installed HDD but rather to keep those partitions just in case if my SSD fails.

Hence, how do i turn all the three partitions above (in the Lenovo factory installed HDD) to become dormant? I want the computer to boot up from the existing SSD but then to treat the factory installed HDD as the data drive and not to read from any of the three partitions in the factory installed HDD.

ANy ideas on how to accomplish this? By the way, i am planning to use EASUS as my disk partition freeware.

A:Hiding partitions in Factory installed HDD (Lenovo Y580)

You will need to delete all partitions, or you will have boot up problems.

So I have a Lenovo Y580 Ideapad I bought circa 2013/14. I've kept it pretty updated and all since then. It had Windows 8 last time I was able to use it (a few months now sadly). Before this incident, it had already happened before but it would come back on after a few tries. One time it took a whole week of trying to turn it on and off and finally it just popped up again. But this previous time I accidently let it die (I always had it charging once this issue began because I was afraid it would die and do this) and it hasn't been able to boot. I've researched this issue and I've not been able to find one specific answer. So I decided to come here and have some seasoned techs look at my issue personally. I uploaded some videos on youtube in order for you all to get a look at it and what it does when I poke around at it. Also, Idk if it would be of any relevance, but before it died it had had a long standing issue of the touchpad not working. Occasionally it would twitch or work for a few minutes but it was mostly dead (the touchpad I mean). I was never able to fix it (also I just got lazy and bought a mouse). Here is video #1 so you get a basic idea of **bleep** it's doing: https://youtu.be/FwVumwp7MFAHere is video #2 of me poking around on it and doing the restart power thing (thass tha technical name right?) so you can see what it does and doesn't do:https://youtu.be/FwVumwp7MFAIf there is any more info I can give please let me know. Recently my computer has been occasionally freezing while I've been browsing online. It doesn't actually get to the point of BSOD but programs will stop working and I eventually won't be able to close or open anything, including task manager.

I tried running CHKDSK to see if that could fix things, (it has crashed since then unfortuantely), doing so somehow filled up my hard drive. I went from having around 700 GB free to only having a couple hundred MBs free. I tried this two more times.

I've attached the dump log as requested as well as the three logs of the CHKDSK that I found in event viewer.

Greetings! I'm currently working on reinstalling win on my cousin's y580 with following specs:Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-3110M CPU @ 2.40GHz8GB RAMGEFORCE GTX 660M Everything went smoothly until the part where I want to install USB 3.0 drivers (responsible for 2x3.0 USB and 2.0 USB port). I tried everything from installing win7 drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling them with Windows Update to forcing INTEL drivers intalation. So far no luck. Browsing the forum I happened to find the topic: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/USB-3-0-Ports-Not-Working-Y580/m-p/3457050#M149... , where the guy assumes that motherboard is broken cause he bought it with "broken USB ports". That is not the case, ports were working just fine on win8 until the moment win10 was introduced. In the device manager the driver shows the error 10. I also came for advice to my friend using the same notebook with better specs(i7) and they are working fine for him. So my question finally is: have anyone solved this problem for the given spec already and/or is it the case of the 64bit system(not fully supported with those specs)? I am frankly out of ideas rn. Cheers, Hubert

Hi All,

I have searched extensively for this issue but haven't found any workable solutions so I'm posting.

Recently purchased a Lenovo Ideapad Y580 and performed a fresh install of Win 7 Premium 64-bit on a new SSD. Installed latest drivers for all hardware but discovered after the install that my wireless adapter wasn't able to find any wireless networks (it worked find under Windows 8 when laptop was first unboxed). My wired connection works fine though, I am able to connect up to my network without issue using a network cable. Also, I am able to connect to my home wireless network without issue using another laptop.

In addition, the adapter icon in my tray shows a red-X on it. I've found many issues through web searches that suggest driver updates or hardware disable/enable steps but neither of these approaches have worked for me. I am holding off re-installing my OS until I've tried some more simpler and less time consuming options.

Hi all, and first of all thank you in advance, even if you don't manage to solve my issue

First things first, what happens:

I have played BF3 since it was out, and a couple of weeks ago it started crashing more and more often. Now I can barely play for 5 minutes. It also occurs with Mass Effect 3, but I haven't tested other games.

Most of the crashes no longer lead to BSODs, I "only" need to Ctrl-Alt-Del out of the game, but sometimes I'll have a cold BSOD.

Note that I had for a while a second GPU from the same model (except 1Gb of RAM instead of 2) and switching between them did not solve the issue.

My Windows is a Home Premium x64 version, which I bought with the computer and installed myself. I built the PC (and installed the OS) in early November 2011.

I hope you guys can acces the specs I entered in my profile, otherwise I'll copy/paste them.

I have run the BSOD Dump & System File Collection app, and attached the zipped result, let me know if anything is missing. Note that some dumps might be old, as I used to have a malfunctioning GPU which was replaced by the store where I bought my computer.

I also attached the perfmon html file as advised.

I'm running AVG Antivirus Free, which is always turned on, and Windows Update are made on a regular basis.

Here's a quick summary of what I tried so far:

- Uninstalled everything Logitech-related
- Uninstall/Driver Sweeper/Re-install NVIDIA drivers several times, with WHQL and BETA drivers

Ok quick and easy
What exactly does adding more GPUs to a computer do, does it reduce lag and stuff.

What I thought is: If you have a video card, say 9500GT and the game lags on it, does adding another 9500GT(or better) imrove quality? I saw a dude with 3 EVGA GTX 570s so i wanted to ask. SKyrim is coming so i want a buffed up pc for it.

A:Several GPUs?

It depends. There are two options that I know of depending on who you go with: SLI or Crossfire. With an SLI (NVIDIA) setup you won't really notice a huge difference unless you play in really high resolutions and have all the bells and whistles turned on (AA, shaders, etc. etc.) As far as Crossfire (ATI) I don't really know where you see a performance gain as I haven't played around with that setup yet. You're probably better off just putting down more money for a good video card to start with then trying to set up one of those though. If you have any issues with one card or have to upgrade, you have to figure on replacing all the cards at the same time which in the end can be a lot more expensive.

For an SLI system, the cards can run in parallel, or one can be dedicated to graphics and the other to PhysX effects. If you are thinking about going with either though, I'd suggest reading up on both and doing some research. If you're playing on a 17" monitor, neither is really going to be of any benefit. And SLI is capable of running 3 or 4 cards in parallel as well, but you're really talking a lot of money for that. Also keep in mind you need a motherboard that supports the setup and a power supply beefy enough to handle the extra cards. Not to mention the cards generate a lot of heat, so you're talking cooling issues as well.

Your card probably supports 2 monitors via 2 output connectors and that's probably what is being shown. I doubt that the onboard video is what you're seeing there.

lol so ive been debating this for a while.

what GPU do you guys think would be best price to performance?

i cant decide between these 3:

GTX 760
R9 280X
GTX 800 series (860 or so when its released)

so im probs going to be buying a gpu in march or so when some big games are coming out, however, which one should i get? i heard that the 800 series are coming out Q1 of 2014.

gaming at 1080p, i just want as many FPS as i can in all games under $300

A:GPUs.....

Too far away and too many variables (price going up/down, new cards, etc) to make any kind of recommendation. Best thing to do would be to start saving based on the most expensive card you're considering and then ask again when it gets much closer to the time of purchase.

A:1 GPU vs 2 GPUs

Well the 2 GPUs in theory would be faster then one, however its completely dependent upon the games you play. Sadly Crossfire is far more broken then SLI at this time.

Hi all,

I'm seriously thinking about (well, I'm going to) buying a new motherboard and get the new 8800 card soon-ish. Thing is, doing this will mean I'll have to change my RAM and maybe even my processor but I really don't want to change my processor. I've currently got an Athlon 64 FX-55 (939 pin) and I don't want to change it just yet because it's still a kickass chip. I need to change my motherboard because it only supports 8x PCI-E and you need to have 16x for the new GPUs. Also means changing my RAM which is a pain as I've got 4x DDR sticks.

Would it make much of a difference if I just buy a motherboard which supports 16x PCI-E socket 939 or are those gonna be dated? Do I really need to change my chip? What motherboard would be the best for the new GPUs and socket 939?

Nforce 6 motherboards only support dual/quad chips, am I missing out by sticking to a 939 board?

Any advice would be greatly appriciated!

Hello, I have bought this psu : Be Quiet System Power B8 550W 80plus Bulk. I'm looking to buy a graphics card, but I can't understand if the pins or connectors are compatible with the specific cards I want. They are:
8GB PowerColor Radeon RX 580 Red Devil Aktiv PCIe 3.0
8GB PowerColor Radeon RX 580 Red Devil Golden Sample
Gtx 1060 6gb (Gigabyte, Msi)
Rx vega 56

A:Is this PSU compatible with these GPUs?

Well for starters, the RX 580 requires a MINIMUM of a 600W QUALITY PSU. Yours is only 550W so I wouldn't recommend using it on those card. Second, your power supply brand is a really low end maker. It will not likely stand to the stress of gaming. I would get a high quality power supply like a Corsair RM 750 or similar.

I have two GTX 560ti GPUs that I need to RMA because they crash when running DX11 applications at factory speeds (these are gigabyte overclocked cards 900MHz core and the only way to avert the crash is by under-clocking the core)

I purchased them from two different websites, one in March '11 one in June '11

1) is it necessary to send the correct item to the right retailer? i.e. will they have any way to check serial numbers and things

2) is there any way I could identify which one is which?! I have them both, 90% certain I know which GPU I bought second (still has the cover over the DVI port!) not sure about the packaging though...

It's a fiddly problem, but I feel I need to get to the bottom of it because they probably get a lot of customers cheekily trying to return old/broken hardware

Both are under warranty and I am fully confident I will be able to exchange them for a replacement/refund. My brother uses the same GPU and does not experience the same fault. I suspect it was an issue with earlier models as he purchased his in september '11.

Any advice or ideas?

A:Two faulty GTX 560 Ti GPUs

The warranty/RMA will be tied to the serial numbers. White sticker with bar code- which should be between the front GPU heatsink screw and the solder points for the cards VRM. I Think most Gigabyte boards only have two stickers attached- the white serial and a green QC.

I know that Nvidia allows for the use of two different GPU's such at an 8800GT and a GTX 280 utilizing the better one for graphics while unloading the physX onto the 8800 however my question is in relevance to the technology. Both GPU's mentioned are DX10 so no problems however I currently have a GTX280 and would like to eventually jump up to the GTX480 however the 280 is based off DX10. Will this be a problem when trying to run both on the same platform?

Nope, shouldn't be a problem with Directx versions. Not sure how much benefit you'll have from using two cards rather then the 480 for everything.

Hi xerox203 and welcome to W7 Forums

Whilst both cards are capable of utilising crossfire, they cannot do so together. Both cards need to be from the same family series, i.e. 2x 6000 series or 2x 7000 series. Ideally, both cards should be identical. So that means, in your case, 2x 6870 or 2x 7950.

I have inherited a beasty PC with an old Nvidia Quadro FX 4500 graphics card. However it is now over two years old and so can't handle modern functions such as CUDA or PhysX, but is still a high resolution quality card. Can you see a problem with adding a second modern graphics card, such as a Geforce 9 series card to the system, ignoring all this SLI and Crossfire stuff and simply running them as separate cards, using my current card as a display driver and the new Cuda enabled card for GPU processing.

A:Multiple GPUs

You'd want to make the new card the main, primary card otherwise any game will use the Quadro card since you cannot specify which card can be used for what and you can't have one monitor connected to two cards without a switch. And if you don't have a second PCI-Express x16 slot then you can't even do that. Your best bet is to sell the Quadro card and get a new Geforce GTX 200 series card.
