Save to Desktop -vs- Save to Documents

Q: Save to Desktop -vs- Save to Documents

Whenever I save a file or WANT to save a file to the desktop, I go to "Save As" and it always wants to revert to saving to the documents folder instead of the desktop making me have to take the extra step to choose desktop instead of the computer just realizing thats where I want it to go.

In the documents folder for Library Locations I have removed anything with the word "documents" so the one and only location listed in Documents Library now is "C:\Users\Username\Desktop".

Yet when I make a new document and go to "save as" it is still wanting to save to documents despite being removed from the library locations.

On more than 2 occasions now I was in a hurry and went to save as but didn't check the location assuming it was going to go to the desktop which is where its supposed to but instead had to waste time hunting down some random folder the file went to.

Is there any way to make it so the "Save As" option cannot see or does not realize there is a documents folder (Kind of like how malware can hide from AntiVirus) and default to saving my files to the desktop on the first try without having to manually select desktop location?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

What program are you saving the document from? Many programs have a preference setting somewhere for you to tell it the default location to save or open documents.

For instance, here's the default Save location setting for Word 2013:

Hello,
we are building some restricted Clients for a special room and we need to disable the save as dialoge
When open a PDF-Document in InternetExplorer and then want to save it, the default path is set to My Documents (Instead of the default "Downloads" save location from IE) . We have already disabled the Libarys via Registry but in the "save
as" dialoge they are still there.
We want to achive that a User can only save files to a fileserver and nowhere else. Additionally we have seen this in the open dialog with the desktop as default path, which we want to disable also. Normally the User see anything in the Desktop (restricted
via GPO), but unfortunately its possiable to save and open files there.
I have looked at User- and ShellFolder Registry Keys to custimize the dialoges but it works, but possibly not the best solution. Also I know thats possiable to work with folder redirection, but then the libaries are still there.
Is there a way to disable the "documents" and "desktop" save-as dialogs, so that its noted by the application and only show the share path?
I hope its possiable to understand what I mean :-)

A:Disable Save to Desktop / Documents Folder

If you would like to restrict user from saving file on Desktop, you can remove Modify permission from their Desktop folder by Startup scripts. Group Policy cannot restrict add/remove item if they have modify permission.
You can enable the following Policies to disable downloading.
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer > Internet Control Panel > Security Page
You can enable "Allow file downloads" policy and select Disable in Internet Zone and Intranet Zone.Mark as Answer if it's worked. Thanks. Balamurugan_Subramaniyan

I run Win 7 Pro on an HP workstation. My dream is to have any, every and all open files save to the desktop when I press ctrl s. This allows me to look at them and decide what I want to do with them. If I want them to go to Users\Demon\My Documents, I'll send them there. I don't want to change the location of any files that are already stored and not open, I know where they are. I don't want a new library, or a new favorite. I only want to save open files of any type from any application to t h e desktop.

After that harangue, is such a thing possible in Win 7 Pro, and if it is, how do I do it? While not the desired answers, "No" and "You Can't" are perfectly acceptable.

Hi
I have Outlook 365 on my desktop for emails , calendars and contacts
I use Icloud for Windows to sync my Calendar and Contacts from iphone to desktop or from desktop to iphone.
Was seamless until a few days ago when trying to edit a contact on Outlook it would not allow me to save it
Error message was "Your changes cannot be saved because you don't have permission to modify some or all of the items in this folder. Do you want to save a copy of the item in the default
folder for the item?
I can edit the contact on iphone and it updates though to Outlook on desktop.
Calendar appointments (new and amended/edited) are seamlessly working both ways.
A new contact inputted onto Outlook icloud contact will save but if you then try to add a new number or note then get the above error message.
Please advise

I'm running Word 2013. Up till a week or so it worked fine, but now it freezes completely whenever I try to save or save as a document, new or modified, in my C:\Users\Tom\Documents folder, even though it does seem to save or save as correctly if I choose subfolders in ...documents or other separate folders.

I have tried running Word in safe mode. No help.

I have done a complete repair using control panel/programs...no help. It seemed to have uninstalled MS Office 2013 completely and reinstalled it completely, and nothing improved. One minor problem I have with this is that I've lost my product key from the original version, and I can't retrieve it from Dell, where I bought the machine, so I can't activate the reinstalled MS Office 2013! It'll run till next Tuesday, then it'll be dead. My bad, but that's not what's causing me this grief.

I have checked the hard drive with AVG PCTuneup disk doctor and found no errors. I've defragged with that routine also; no help.

I've tried running Word with and without first launching any browser. The problem occurs whether or not I've launched a browser.

To my untrained eye, it seems as if whenever I try to point Word to my normal ...documents folder, to retrieve a doc stored there so I can work on it, or save a new doc there that I've just created, or "save as" a doc I've retrieved from a different folder, Word can't find that spot on my hard drive. Hi all

Just a stupid little problem with W7 I noticed which is VERY confusing but simple to fix.

I changed via the dialog the TEXT SIZE via the screen resolution in the control panel to CUSTOM SIZE.

With one of the newer "Cinema" or Very Wide screen (1680 X 900) displays after I'd increased the text size to over 160 % I didn't get the possibility to SAVE any documents any more via the SAVE AS button. The SAVE dialog would appear but the SAVE button was missing.

The effect was noticed in Office 2007 (all programs) Notepad etc etc.

Seems to be a Windows fault as this should not be allowed to happen.

on more traditional "Squarer" type monitors -- no problem.

I couldn't find the answer by googling but a bit of "trial and Error" fixed the problem.

I've experienced this problem twice in the past week. Here is my current problem:

New Windows 8 computer
Moved Office 2010 install from old computer to new computer
Copied all documents to new computer by installing the old drive in the new computer (NTFS to NTFS)

When trying to open any DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, or PPTX files that are stored in the Documents folder I get permission errors. Word will open an RTF file just fine. If I try to use any Office programs to save a file to the Documents folder, I also get permission errors. I can move the file to the Desktop and work with it just fine. I can then move it back to the Documents folder.

Here are the errors when trying to open files:
Word - Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges
Excel - 'C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\Book1.xlsx' could not be found
Powerpoint - The path or file name for C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\Presentation1.pptx is invalid.

When I try to use one of these programs to save to the Documents folder, I get the following error:
You don't have permission to save in this location.

I tried copying the files two different ways to eliminate any lingering NTFS permissions. I used a linux box to copy from the old drive to EXT4, then to a linux formatted FAT drive. I plugged this FAT drive into the Windows machine and moved the files over but got the same errors. Next, I copied the files from the old drive to a FAT32 drive using another Windows box. Are there any error messages that come up when you attempt to save a file? are you trying to save files to a network share somewhere or are the files password protected? If an error message is being generated, I would check Event Viewer for any problems that Office may be having. If Event Manager doesn't show any instances of failure than a clean reinstall never hurts!

Hope it helps!

It never stops amazing me how people with issues are not willing to give relevant information. "I have a problem but I am not willing to give you more information. Please solve it!"

That being said, when you save a document it most certainly does not save 95 items. However, if you save a webpage selecting Save As: Webpage, complete (*.htm;*.html)(*) then it is only natural that system saves a lot of items as every button, image and so on will be saved to allow offline viewing of said page.

If you want to save a webpage as single file, you must select Save As Type: Web Archive, single file (*.mht)(*)
Kari

(*) Examples from IE 9 & 10. Other browsers might have similar feature but use slightly different wording. Opera and Maxthon browser for instance have the save as .mht feature, Chrome and Firefox not.

If you have a cd burner, u can burn all the important data on to a cd.
If you are using windows xp, there is a built in utility in the operating system which helps you to burn the cds.
Or else , you can use any cd burning softwares like nero, roxio, adaptec.....etc.
If you dont have a cd burner with you, better option is send the important pictures to you personal mail id and once you finish formatiing and reinstalling the software ,you can download them.( Assuming that you have less pics to be saved.)

Hey all,

I've just got this new laptop, a Dell XPS M1530, which I got at christmas, it got Vista Home premium.
It worked all fine, or this last week when I was writing on a school project in Word, and I felt I was done, I wanted to save the document of course. But then I clicked the "Save As" button. The browsing window came up, but it didnt respond. I found it also happens with Excel and PowerPoint.

I'm no computer genius, but I would guess it might be a problem with the "office pack"? I got the whole office pack with the computer.

I've tried to run Norton scanning but didn't find anything.

Any suggest how I could solve this problem?

Would be very grateful if anyone could help me, thanks.

She recently while on the internet received the fake "you have viruses on computer click here to fix" message and installed (from what she can remember it was called) Windows Security virus program. She then discovered it caused all kinds of problems with her computer. It took a while to be removed it and hopefully now her IT person was able to do so.This is her problem now. Originally she had Wordperfect 8 and does many documents in it. She never had problems with it before the above incident. Now however, every time she tries to re-save documents that she perviously saved she gets the following error message "Access denied: You do not have rights to do this". She and the IT person have tried to repair Wordperfect using the cd-rom option. They have uninstalled and reinstalled Wordperfect - actually did that a couple of times. Yesterday, IT uninstalled Wordperfect 8 and instead installed Wordperfect 11. They thought everything was fine but this morning the same error comes up. As you can image she is very fustrated with this and is ready to rip her hair out. Not having Wordperfect is not an option. Hopefully someone here can help me out so I can help her save her hair. :-) Any and all help would be appreciated.Thanksbrussel57

There is a limit to how many files you can have in the "root directory", you should try creating subdirectories on the flash drive and see if it helps.

The limit is about 112 files from memory, but creating subdirectories you should not get this occurring?

I have a client running Win XP. They are on a domain running Server 2008 with a few mapped network drives to their data.

Specifically there is one mapped drive which is the User's data folders with everyday running docs, more specifically running MS Excel '97 and Word '97 (yeah I know...time for an upgrade hey? I know...). My problem with only one of the users is that he is able to open the documents on the mapped drive, specifically with .wbk files (the Word Backups), and even allowed to make changes to the files, and even save it. But as soon as he wants to "save as" the file to give it a different name, then Word crashes, the whole system hangs. Not able to get any other response out of it than opening up Task Manager, but even when I try to run some commands from it or end certain task, itself crashes too.

I have no idea what could be going on. Well, I was informed that the system had a virus on a couple of weeks ago, but I have been given no details thereof as I think the person is trying to hide what damaged he has caused by "fixing" some problems found.

This is what I have done so far:

1.) I have done "sfc /scannow"
2.) Malwarebytes scan (find log attached)
3.) HiJackThis (find log attached)

Please tell me if there's anything more you need.

Hello. I need your help. I am having an issue with the program PDF Viewer Plus (Pro) by Nuance. This program is of a component of a larger program called Nuance PaperPort 12 Professional. PaperPort is a scanner software program that works with many manufacturers? scanners out there. You can scan to create many kinds of documents, like jpeg and PDF documents. I have personal opinions of Nuance ? both +/- ones. The reason why I am here is for a negative one. Nuance technical support charges a pretty penny after its 90-day free support period. So that is why I am here. Nuance?s business model is terrible! People complain about their business practices, plus their software programming all the time and I do not blame them. They took over ScanSoft, a very good former company with a good product, years ago and only recently has Nuance done some work to improve their acquired useful and feature loaded products. Still Nuance products are full of bugs and issues. Their activation policies are terrible and very rigid, but I like their products for their features so I spend money for them.
Anyways, my issue ? After I scanned the documents, they automatically saved on PaperPort?s desktop as a PDF document. Now, the pages of the document on PaperPort?s desktop are all upside down (scanned that way, not intentional) in a small PDF icon. I say, no problem. I am trying to save pictures from my camera's SD card to my laptop, but the "My Pictures" option disappeared after saving six or seven photos.  Normally, I click "Save As", and select "My Documents" and then "My Pictures" from the dropdown menu.  But, the option is gone, leaving me with just "My Music" and "My Videos".

It is still in the Start up menu...just gone from the drop down menu.  This happened once with a desktop I owned, but I was able to access a less direct route through the drop down menu (documents to recent documents and then select the folder that I needed), but that option doesn't exist on the laptop.

Rebooting the computer multiple times hasn't helped, and I found that I can't upload them to Facebook to try to direct them back to me because the "My Pictures" option isn't available in the drop down menu.

I have asked several people, but no one seems to know what is going on.  Can anyone help?

A:My Pictures has disappeared from My Documents...Can't Save Pics XP Pro

Sounds like the program path to the My Pictures folder was unintentionally changed.

Look at your home drive (usually C) for  C:/Documents and Settings /<your user name> /My Documents/My Pictures

If  it isn't there, but somewhere else you can use the search tool to locate your pictures by typing in the search box either My Pictures or *.jpg  (the later will find all jpg pictures on your computer wherein you can open  a couple thumbnails that you know should be in my pictures and click on properties to see where they now reside.)

Here's info on how to reset The My Pictures folder pathway:
Windows keeps the path to special folders like My Pictures in the registry key - HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ User Shell Folders
Rather than manually editing to reset the key, you can use TweakUI Power Tool  - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310176
or the Microsoft FixIt Tool   http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886549#FixItForMeAlways

You also state you can't access the Recent menu. You should see an option for this if you hit the start key  > taskbar & start menu > customize > advanced. Then see if there's a check by List my most recently opened documents .

Hello,
I have one question. Is it possible to save the order of my music folders (and files!) in My Music folder. What I mean is that I'm going to transfer all of my music (55 GB) on external HDD and then back to freshly installed Windows 7. And what I would like is that my order of folder is sorted as I did it in Win XP, and NOT by alphabetical order or something else. I have really huge collection and organizing it like it is now would be a nightmare. I do not want music to be sorted like: ATB, Coldplay, Linkin Park, Trance; but in my order (like Coldplay, Linkin Park, ATB, Trance). I wonder if thumbs.db hidden file has to do something with order of the icons (I guess not ) So is it possible or not? Thanks for advices, cheers!

Explorer can display the files in different orders - alphabetical, file type, date modified and you can vary that by clicking on the column heading. Is that what you've done and become accustomed to seeing? If it is, you're in luck because W7 can do the same.

Vista has decided on a hierarchy of Desktop/Network/Libraries/My User Name/My Pictures/My Documents

I can not find files saved in Works by using Windows Explorer. Windows Explorer shows Libraries with Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos subordinate. But documents saved by Works aren't stored in those sub-directories.

Furthermore, I now have subdirectories named: My Documents and Documents; My Pictures and Pictures; My Videos and Videos.

Some applications seem to change the hierarchy around and use or omit the word "my" arbitrarily.

Works uses a different hierarchy than WordPad. I end up going in circles trying to decipher the directory structure. It is circular.

Thanks.

A:How do I change default save location for Works documents

I have Works 9.0 [last version published by Microsoft] on Win7, my Save and Open goes to my Username\My Documents. Unfortunately Works is more limited [call it simpler] in what can be done when compared with Microsoft Office/Word that Tools, Options has no way to make a lot of change to the Defaults. Works is aimed more at home/student use which usually doesn't require a lot of the adjusting of how things are done.

Now if you have Works Suite, the word processor portion of Works has been replaced by a version of Word, apparently in deference to folks who work on documents at home and need to share at the office which doesn't have Works. That Word should be quite similar to Word in the Microsoft Office suite of applications.

It used to be Works was included on new computers [only cost about $50] while Works Suite cost about twice as much. For awhile OEMs were including a Starter version of Office, Word and Excel, but even that on the Win8 I've set up was replaced by Office 365.

For those without much resources who want/need something more powerful, I've set up the free LibreOffice 4 which can open Works file formats along with a bunch of others such as WordPerfect and Lotus AmiPro [maybe its replacement WordPro?] and Lotus 1-2-3.

As for the "My" part, I think you'll notice it is part of a change in Windows that leaves it off, e.g. Win7's Start menu, but retains it on subFolders of the Libraries Folders. If you open Windows Explorer to C:\Users you'll see th... Read more

Hello all!

I was always wondering,

Is there some way that I can change the default save location of things? For instance.. Games... Virtual machines.. I want JUST documents to be in documents rather then a bunch of BS stuff. If I make a folder in documents like "BS Folder" and put everything I don't want in there then it confuses the software.

Is there anyway I can change something or work around it so when I click Documents in the start menu a select folder pops up that is full of stuff I want it to be full of.

Hopefully that makes sense..

As you can see in the photo.. I want stuff like that out of my Documents and somewhere else.

Thanks!

A:Changing the default save location of things from Documents

It sounds to me like you are talking about the Documents library and that you have folders "included" in this library that you do not want to be included anymore. Is this correct?

Hi,

I've been searching for most parts of the net and the forums here and did install/uninstall/restore my notepad, paint and wordpad but nothing seems to work.

When these files are opened, nothing seems to be a problem. But whenever you attempt to save by Ctrl+S, or the by clicking File>Save or File>Save As the program automatically closes. This has been a consistent behavior for the 3 softwares.

I'm using Windows XP 64 bit OS and had no error messages of any sort except that these programs just close themselves when a save attempt is done.

I did virus and malware scans by Avast, ESET Nod & Kaspersky and nothing was detected.

Reinstalling isn't an option for me now as I don't have any optical drive... besides, this may be very hard for me but I'm willing to suffer for the sake of learning.

I'd really appreciate your inputs on this matter.
Thanks for all ideas and help ahead!

One of my user is having this problem on her Windows XP PC:

Dell GX260 with Windows XP Professional running 512MB RAM, Office XP, Acrobat 5.0

When opening a Word file & edited in Word XP, the user cannot SAVE or use SAVE AS the file, when try to exit out the file, get prompt to either SAVE, CLOSE, or CANCEL the file, at that point it will still not save the file, the only way to exit the file is to hit CLOSE to exit.

I initially thought this might be a Word Xp problem, so I ran the repair tool in Office XP, that did not fix it.

I then uninstalled Office XP, reinstalled Office XP, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then ran the Office update to download the latest patches from MicroSoft, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then UNINSTALLED Acrobat 5.0 from the PC, that FIXED the problem.

WITHOUT Acrobat 5.0 on her PC, the user was now able to open & edit a Word file, and able to SAVE the edited file, also able use SAVE AS to save the file as a new copy.

I then reinstalled Acrobat 5.0 thinking the previous copy of Acrobat 5.0 on the PC might be corrupted, as soon as Acrobat 5.0 was back on the PC, the same problem with the SAVE feature came back in Word XP.

I then installed the patch update for Acrobat 5.0, that did not fix the problem.

At this point, I am out of clues on how to fix it....The user tried Acrobat 6.0 before on the same PC, but decided to reverse back to Acrobat 5.0 because of format problem with 6.0.......so Acrobat 6.0 is no... Read more

I have a number of files I would like to try and save off of the disk, and/or I would like to know if there is any saving the hard drive for future use. I record music and use adobe programs for freelance artwork. Also there are a number of pictures I'd love to recover (though as far as I know they're backed up on google drive). The .wavs of some recordings were recent and were not backed up in time before the disk crashed.

I apologize, this is lenghty but i'll throw it all out there.

As best as I can remember this is the sequence of events:
My daughter was born three weeks ago, my wife decided to pop in a usb thumbdrive to save baby pictures to my pc (Dell Optiplex755 refurbished, Win7 32 bit, Intel dual core processors, Seagate 7200.12 Barracuda 1TB hardrive).

A few pictures, unknown to me at the time, were corrupted wither on the flashdrive or the camera's memory card.

After she moved the pictures to the computer it froze, and she restarted.

Windows Desktop Manager crashed, and CPU in task manager was at 100% always.

I ran an error check, and four files were found to be corrupt and fixed (3 photos, 1 reaper file, and 1 system 32 file. (I'm an idiot and I didn't write down the system 32 file.)

After error check, I noticed a yellow exclamation next to optiplex in devices, and I was notified that the driver for my intel processors was not compatible suddenly with windows. I tried to download new optiplex drivers but chrome and internet explorer would fr... Read more

It almost sounds like you got some malware from that USB stick.

If you have a friend with a Linux computer, or have access to one, you can often hook up a non booting drive and recover files that way. I don't know the exact procedure but something like this may help, too:

Any thoughts?

The computer involved is using Windows 7 Pro 64bit and Office Professional Plus 2010.

I am having a problem I cannot find a solution to. I have one user at a clients location that has recently stopped being able to save excel files in their my documents. The my docs is being redirected to a server. The files open correctly and can be edited, but when save is clicked an error box says the document not saved. Using cntrl-shift-i I found the error code to be 100490. I can open any other file and save them just fine. And any new excel documents can be opened and saved correctly. The file can be saved into the same folder using save as is and the document is renamed. However, the user cannot erase the old file.

Doing some digging I made sure the trust zone was enable for the network path and trusted locations on a network were allowed. They had already been configured.

I checked for the windows update that microsoft reported could fix this problem and it was not installed. I went ahead and tried the hotfix, but it would not run because of the missing update.

I tried changing permissions and ownership. This where it gets strange the user has full control enabled on the folder. On any other folder or file I can right click and view the security tab. However, on the excel files when I click the security tab a red line is displayed that says "This file is currently not available for use on this computer." With regard to clearing lists of [recently opened and/or saved] file names in Windows file dialog boxes, Orbital Shark had described the following procedure (from his 01 Nov., '10 post-) How to Clear This Dialog Box ? :

"If you want to selectively clear the Common Dialog file names MRU, you need to delete these two registry keys manually:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ ComDlg32 \ LastVisitedPidlMRU

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ ComDlg32 \ OpenSavePidlMRU"

My question is as follows (and it is probably a silly one, therefore please bear with me and thank you):

Is the prescribed procedure to delete the *actual keys* ("LastVisitedPidlMRU" & "OpenSavePidlMRU"), or instead to delete the *contents* of those keys? i.e.: Should I select/highlight the key within the left panel of the Regisgtry Editor, and then select delete; or should I select/highlight the key within the left panel, and then select/highlight in the right panel all the contents of that respective key, and then delete all those contents (not the actual key itself) indicated in the right panel?

Thanks much for your patience and for your help! Win

Hello Windough, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Deleting those actual keys would work best. If you like, the tutorial below will help you do this automatically instead of having to manually do it in regedit.Common Dialog Boxes - Clear Dropdown List of Recent Files History
In addition, you might look at this tutorial if you do not want to have this history kept.Common Dialog Boxes - Enable or Disable Dropdown List of Recent Files
