Broken Case Y580 Laptop

Q: Broken Case Y580 Laptop

My Y580 case broke. First it started around the plastic "grill" on the heatsink (on the left side of the laptop). Soon it was the lower portion of the case around the hinge. Then it was the other side of the laptop near the hinge and despite some gorilla glue and duct tape. Now my Y580 case is in bad shape. I went online to buy a new case and see that others have this same problem. This is definately a design flaw. It's not just me. Will Lenovo fix my laptop? It is out of warranty, but a design flaw is a design flaw. I would hope Lenovo would like to keep a good name and a good customer. I'm being honest here - if they don't I'd have to be a bit stupid to buy more from Lenovo.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have had this probelm for awhile but to a lesser degree for the last year. Now the connectors at the back of the case have broken as a result of the leverage pressure of the hinge structure. I am currently trying to keep it from excessive separation of the case with plastic packing tape. It's not working well but it's all I have. The computer works well otherwise and I can't afford to buy one just because the case is broken.I have seen forum messages about the same issue but no direct response. What solution is there for a problem that seems to based on a poor case/hinge design. I need some direction.Thank you.

The case clips that hold the laptop bottom together at the screen hinges are broken on both sides.  It is clearly a design flaw.  I don't even use the touch screen because the problem is severe and I can't lose use of the computer.  I would reason that case part replacements would be required to make the repair.  What can I do to repair the computer?  Are case replacement parts available?  Please advise.

I currently have a Lenovo Y580 Laptop computer with a dvd burner optical drive. I am wanting a blu ray burner where I can watch iblu-ray movies, and occasionally burn files to a Blu ray disk. I have found this drive, but I'm not sure whether it is compatible. It appears there are several different sizes for optical drives. Any idea whether this will physically fit in my laptop? Thanks for your assistance.

A:Blu Ray Burner for Lenovo Y580 Laptop

Unless it is designed for that machine, and it states that it will work, I doubt very much that you can use it. Laptops, in particular, are very proprietary in hardware, and though some few standard pieces may be interchangeable, for the most part, even the connections for optical drives are often the company's own. You'll need to get a drive from the manufacturer or one that they say will work. (Or advice from someone who has actually gotten one to fit.)

Alternatively, you could look into an external case with a USB connection for a BluRay drive. Since most people rarely use them, except for data storage (double-sided ones can hold 50 GB's which makes a great storage medium) or videos, and they are expensive, it may be best to buy just one that can be used on all machines and keep for future ones. I have found no problems with speed playing BluRay over a USB 2.0 connection (In the worst case, the contents could be copied to your hard drive before playing, anyway, though I have never had to do that). And, of course, since a drive that supports all optical media for both reading and burning is only slightly more expensive than those that support fewer types, it is worth the money to get a good drive. Just another idea...............

I feel if this is such a common issue, why should I have to pay for a phone call, or a replacement case?

Hi everyone, and thanks in advance

The problem is this:
I was just testing out a bunch of mouses on my USB port (its a long story) and plugging them in to the front USB port on my case...

You can view my case ina big picture here:
http://www.pc-look.com/boutik/images/Plus/700850-013_p003.jpg
I plugged it in to the top one

anyway, a little later i tripped over the mouse cord pulling the mouse cord out of the USB Port and causeing the top USB port protector (white thing covering the 4 prongs) and bending the whole thing down.

Now the top USB Port is missing the white protector. The bottom one seems fine but both were bent... now none of them work.

Could anyone give me any information on what to do or ways i could try to see if it works (excluding taking it in for repair)?

If repair is the only option could someone tell me what may have to be repeaired?

thank you very much guys
any help would be very greatly appreciated :slurp:

Hi, I would like to understand how my problem will be dealt with as I am now working with a machine which is very physically fragile and I would like to get it fixed as quickly as possible so that no further damage is done to the machine. My machine is covered by warranty, but going through ww.hp.com/contacthp the site didn't agree.  So I put in my details and attached the invoice for the machine which says that I have a Care Pack which means that it still is in warranty.  Now I need to wait for 1 day until I get a response?  Very disappointingly, the page where I filled these details in did not even send me a "receipt" email, so I need to wait 1 day, hope that my warranty validation request was actually made, and hope for a response.  If I don't get a response, how then do I get back in touch (via what medium, I wonder?  it seems that I am not allowed to make a phone call?) So, hopefully this will be resolved by tomorrow.  At that point I can then type in again a description of the fault. Then what will happen?  I wait another day for someone to call me?  How many days will this take?  What can't I just phone someone?  Or even go on a "chat"?  I'm not allowed to do that as my warranty has expired (except that it hasn't actually expired - that's an HP mistake). The problem is that the case has broken at the location of the screws near the hinges on one side.  The scr... In December of 2015 I bought my daughter a Lenovo 300-15ISK IdeaPad. In many ways it was a good laptop, but it wasn't durable and I wouldn't buy another one. After 5 months (May 2016) part of the housing around the power connection was broken. Because of this the power cord wouldn't plug in all the way and the IdeaPad wouldn't charge. I took it back to where I had purchased it (MicroCenter) to be repaired. I was told that this type of repair was not covered by the warranty, and the price they quoted me was over $300 (about 3/4 of what I paid for the laptop). I was upset that the repairs weren't covered and that they were so expensive. Other places near me had similar prices for this repair. Luckily I was able to jury-rig a solution so the power connection would stay in place and the IdeaPad could be plugged in and charged. My solution lasted until late 2016 before I needed to adjust it again. That 'solution' lasted until this March before it failed again. This time the power connection became detached from the interior of the laptop. So I opened up the laptop in order to fix it again. This IdeaPad was clearly not designed to be repaired -- opening it up was an adventure which strained my abilities and patience. I was able to reconnect the power connection and reclose the laptop, but the IdeaPad will no longer start. So I am left with a bricked IdeaPad, a poor opinion of the durability of Lenovo products, and a worse opinion of Lenovo warranty terms.

Well add my machine to the list of others on here which I find have the same problem. I'm disappointed to find so many with the same issue. Has there been any success in getting resolution? I really didn't anticipate the case and hinge being the first things to go bad on this $$$$ laptop. :-(

Hello all - first time poster on this forum.

I have a bust up fairly old Intel Celeron 600mhz laptop which could do with a new case/shell (not a bag, it needs the equivalent of a new desktop tower) but I don't know where to find one. I believe this is just a clone of similar laptops made around the same time and the model number is 6133. I was wondering if anybody knew somewhere I could purchase replacement shells/cases and if they stocked a case for this computer.

Everything on the laptop works fine except for a dodgy monitor cable (which would be fixed by moving everything into the new shell) so I don't intend to sell it for parts. I'm also quite experienced in fiddling with computers (my dad's a PC engineer so I've picked up quite a bit from him) and he is willing to help me get this laptop into tip top condition again.

I was also wondering if it would be possible to upgrade the motherboard and processor. At the moment it's a 600mhz intel celeron but I'd rather go with an AMD athlon of some sort as I believe them to be generally better. If anybody knows where I can purchase laptop motherboards to fit certain needs any help there would be gladly appreciated (am looking for a socket A motherboard). If the upgrade to Athlon is not possible I would like to know what the upgradability of my current motherboard is - I shall be looking inside the laptop within the next few days and can probably provide a number for it.

I think that with a fe... Read more

Howdy and welcome to the Forum.

Have you contacted the Manufacturer regarding replacement parts? That's where I would start.

BUT to be honest, although you do not give all the specs of the PC, I'd be willing to bet that you could replace the whole thing with a new laptop cheaper than replacing parts like case, MOBO, Processor, RAM, and HD !!!

So unless there is some "sentimental value", like the case broke stopping a bullet shot at you by terrorists...I'd shop for a new unit.

No you cant. Ports in laptops meant to output video data. You may try out some HDMI to USB converters in Amazon or ebay.

Hi Guys, hoping one of you can help with this.
My girlfriends had a laptop for a couple of years and the screen backed up a while back which then lead to a seperate monitor but now it's given up completely.

I'm trying to figure out a way i can access her laptop through my PC but taking into account i can't view/action anything from the laptop.
Any ideas?!

You have two or more girlfriends and they shared a laptop and the only thing broken is the screen? Amazing!

If it was setup to allow Window's Remote Desktop or some similar third party remote access, you can use that. Otherwise, I think repairs or another laptop are called for.
