Preferred Solution: task manager to work, system restore won't work, windows update/defender working wro

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Evening all, about 2 weeks ago I had a malicious program called PC Defender installed on my computer, when I caught this I did a 'System Restore' via a windows restore point. Everything appeared to work and I have not had any problems until today. I noticed my computer was not working as quickly as normal so I attempted to open Task Manager and nothing would happen. I tried via CTRL ALT DEL and CTRL SHFT ESC nothing. I then opened up Windows Defender did a scan and it said it had found one problem with my C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file and said it would remove the file to correct the issue. Tried task manager, nothing. From this point I booted into safe mode to see if it would work then, nothing. I tried to run Norton from there as well and noticed the icons had changed (Symantec AntiVirus) and these would not run. When I am not in safe mode the Symantec folder is actually missing from the Program Files directory. At this point I have done everything that I know short of a system re-install and would like to see if anyone is kind enough in helping me out . I read the instructions on how to post and had one problem with the RootRepeal application, it says when I click on the 'Report' tab cannot initialize driver access violation contact author, because of this I am unable to post that report. I am running Windows 7 and not sure if this might be the issue.

Thanks in advance for the help, it is greatly appreciated.

I downloaded file from an unreliable source and gave my system some big problems. It immediately put "Error Cleaner" and "Privacy Protector" shortcuts on my desktop and gave it a url-linked gif background. All my system dates now display with "VIRUS ALERT!" appended, and alert dialog boxes appear at frequent intervals (although not now, running in safe mode). It has hidden many tools and files (Start menu has no Start, Programs, Control Panel; no hard drives visible when I explore "My Computer') and has disabled the Windows Security auto-update (which I can't change). I cannot use the System Restore, and when I look at the System Volume Information\_restore directory, each folder has its rp.log and RestorePointSize files modified.

I actually began to follow the advice of another thread and downloaded Kaspersky, but I could not install it. Thanks for any help. My HJT log below:

New Acer Aspire, but I pitched the box, so can't return it. Anyway, It initially worked fine for about a week, including Windows Update. Got to a point where every window would say (Not Responding) and resources were maxed out. I couldn't isolate the problem and didn't have any valuable info on the laptop yet. So I did a complete System Restore back to OEM spec.
I tether to my cellphone for internet. So I installed drivers and Access Manager for that. I go into Windows Update and click to check for updates. It runs for about 20 seconds then disconnects from the internet and pops up an error code. I've gone through all the steps that can be run down there.
SP1 is not installed yet.
I'm at a loss here and need help, I'm not tech/nerd savvy, but I'm not computer shy either.

Since then processes have slowed down, especially when I shut down my computer, it takes ages to turn off - stays on the logging off page for a while.

Programs are not installing correctly, my task manager just does not work when I select it.

I did a system restore recently, and it didn't seem to work sucessfully.
Now whenever I click system restore it says:

"The System Restore wizard is already running, the program will now exit."

Is there anyway I can diagnose what the problem is:

Any suggestions how to fix this will be much appreciated, I am literally tearing my hair out because Vista is harder to understand than XP.

When I click on Windows Update, a window briefly appears then disappears again. Same goes for System restore.

The sidebar has disappeared too.

Windows Defender isn't turned on and when I do so, and then try to update, I get error message 0x80040154, saying it can't check for definition updates. I've tried loading the manually, but no joy.

I can't access anything via Start- Search - System or Control Panel - Admin Tools either.

AVG has been reporting no threats at all.

I've run Panda online scanner but nothing showed up, but I think I'm infected.

I'm trying to run Windows Live™ OneCare™, but it "is currently experiencing technical difficulties".

Any suggestions?

System Restore Point Shortcut - Windows 7 Help Forums

Having tried unsuccessfully to program Task Scheduler (in 8.1), I found at the above site in Windows 7 forums a shortcut for a script which supposedly simplifies manual creation of a System Restore point. However when I use it the Restore Point created with the script carries the notation "Install" in the list of Restore Points. Does anyone have any idea what this arcane notation could mean? I'll try to attach a snap of the screen to show what it looks like.

A:Task Scheduler -Windows Defender and System Restore

I have "install" too.
I wouldn't worry about it.

Read other 1 answers

Most of the snap in programs will not work, when you look under "services" in msconfig there is a whole long list of services that I have endable that do not RUN., they are stopped.
IPV6helper service
Windows Installer
Routing and Remote access
Windows Firewall
System Restore
SSDP Discovery Service
Removable Storage
Universal Plug and Play
Auto Updates

These are just a few in a long list......if anyone has any clues let me in. I have cleaned out my pc of virus and have a clean log file( have been workign on that with hijackthis board, so my log is clean)

If anyone can direct me I would so appreciate it ....

Thank you

A:[resolved] System restore does not work, also search, device manager ETC..

I woudl like to add that I get very diff errors from some of the programs, like for instance in search, it is missing files to run, in system restore just says it cannot run and to restart the computer and device manager says MMC Cannot open C:/windows/system31/devmgmt.msc.
This may be becuase the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This also may be becuase you do not have sufficient access rights to thsi file.

I am signed on as the administrator.

Just wanted to add that, already tried going to my computer, and clicking on mange, i get the MMC error.

hope that is enough info to help
Microsoft is aware of the problem and has not sent out a hotfix yet........it says it can help with this specific issue but I emailed them over a week ago and never heard back.

I'm using Windows XP Pro sp3 that is "protected" by AVG, Malwarebytes, Threatfire, and PC Tools Firewall. I also recently "cleaned up" my Dell Inspiron 8600 (yes, I know, old) with CCleaner. I've also tried other "cleaners" such as Wipe, Privacymantra, and index.dat analyzer.PROBLEM: My computer has ample free space and memory because there's absolutely nothing on it besides these programs, firefox, and office (no music, few word docs) so I'm wondering why these programs have recently been "NOT RESPONDING" particularly firefox. PLUS, when I try to stop them using the Windows Task Manager, it takes FOREVER to open and when it finally does, tons of windows pop open on my menu bar and none of which work. Essentially, the task manager can not close the "NOT RESPONDING" programs, so I just have to manually shut off my laptop.Today, when I turned on my computer, PC Tools Firewall said that an "external source" altered some files (which the program fixed itself) but it recommended that I use my spyware to check for any malware. So I tried to open Malwarebytes which was "NOT RESPONDING" and PC Tools Firewall which was "NOT RESPONDING". Again, the Task Manager took forever to open and then tons of windows eventually popped up on the menu bar. None of the Task Manager windows would shut off the computer, so again I was forced to manually shut it off.I downloaded Hijackthis on Safemod... Read more

My brother is using Windows 7 and suddenly after boot menu the computer reaches his wallpaper, with the mouse icon moving fine but no foldiers, files, startmenu or anything else showing.

I people with the same problem online opened Task Manager and opened Explorer.exe to make it work, only Ctrl Alt Del brings us to a black screen which disappears after a few seconds and take us back to the blank wallpaper. I can reach the Control Panel or anything else really when I right click the wallpaper and go to any of the options that bring me into some folder.. but when I'm in a folder and click anything, it won't work. I tried to open Task Manager like that too, or even Explorer.exe, but nothing happens.

Safe Mode works fine bytheway and can't seem to find any errors.

He doesn't have an Anti Virus has his subscription finished lately.. I tried to download AVG during safe mode with networking, but I'm unsure whether it's doing the job right..

Any other options?

Thanks in advance,

"He doesn't have an Anti Virus has his subscription finished lately"

Big mistake. A PC without up-to-date antivirus software will become infected with malware within hours if it's connected to the internet. Please post on the malware forum here: Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help - Tech Support Forum

You must install an up-to-date antivirus as a first step, otherwise the advice you get from the malware forum on removing existing malware will be a waste of time as your PC will just get infected again.

My computer has acted really weird lately. Ever since I was on youtube and clicked a video, (Not sure which video now. I was opening multiple pages.) my computer was attacked by viruses. Avira "Supposedly" removed them, but after this, Firefox would show up saying that it cannot display the page despite IE working. I made sure im not working offline because it tends to activate on my computer periodically.

I restarted my computer and now it won't even open Firefox. I downloaded Trojan Remover and Malwarebytes. I then ran a scan with Avira and it found one item which it move to quarantine. (Not sure if it was connected) Then I ran a scan with Trojan remover and it found nothing. I also ran a search with Malware Bytes and once again, nothing.

THEN I tried to systemrestore to 3 days ago, but it seemed to take awhile restoring. When I turned back on it said it had a problem restoring so files were unaffected. I changed it to 4 weeks ago, and the same message pops up and nothing has happened. I've ran another search with Avira and still it finds nothing.

I tried to switch to Google Chrome even and everytime I run the installer it says it has stopped working (Even though it still downloads for some reason) But then it acts just like Firefox when I open the browser, where it can't display any pages.

Hello folks... and thanks in advance for your time and help!

Ok, I have a 5 year old media center PC running XP and I've never had any major problems. First thing this morning all was well after the PC spent the night in hibernation. After downloading and installing an update to Adobe reader, many odd and concerning things have happened.

1. Upon trying to restart after the update, the PC got hung up at the "Windows is shutting down" screen. So I manually powered it off.
2. Upon powering back on, the desktop was jacked up... the appearances were different (it was all set on the old standard Windows appearance) and all the text under my desktop icons was highlighted in blue.
3. A balloon message appeared saying "you have files waiting to be written to CD." This is especially alarming because those files WERE written to a CD...back in May!
4. Other things were different, such as the appearance of fonts in my Yahoo email, and the appearance of the minimize/maximize/close buttons in the upper right hand corner of each window.

My feeble attempt at fixing this issue started with trying to do a System Restore. That didn't work. I tried it three times, selecting three different restore points. No dice. Then I used Add/Remove Programs to uninstall Adobe Reader. Then I downloaded and installed the older version of Reader that I had been using before. After that, the Adobe Download Manager seemed to take over my PC and it even popped up when I clicked ... Read more

A:Antivirus System Pro; no Windows Start, no Task Manager, no restore point.

Have you tried logging on in safemode? To do this, gently tap the F8 key while the computer reboots. From the list you want to select safemode with networking. If you are able to get in to safemode you will then want to install Malwarebytes, update it and run the scan. Remove everything it finds and then install, update and run SUPERAntispyware; remove everythinhg it finds as well. I would also update your antivirus software and then run a complete scan with it as well. Next you will want to try going back in through the standard Windows mode; just reboot the computer. Run the scans again.

Around the time the problem started TrendMicro Worry Free pack asked for activation and the window stuck, it's was able to click but activation button didn't send me anywhere. This software came with the computer and it has been uninstalled.

Could it be a registry problem instead of a virus?.

Ever since I first got this laptop, task manager has NEVER worked. A program would freeze up, I'd do the normal control, alt, delete... I'd get the blue screen and select task manager.

Sure, it would pop up and yes, I could select the program I wanted to close... and then I would hit, end task... and I'd wait... and wait... and WAIT.

It doesn't DO anything! It just SITS there wasting space. Eventually, I just have to log out of my account and go back in... and since a program was frozen up, it takes a while! What the heck?! Why doesn't it actually work?!

A:Task Manager does NOT work... EVER!

Hey Obbit, Welcome to TSF

Firstly, task manager has a 'new' shortcut CTRL + Shift + ESC.

As for ending your program. Try

1. Right click on the program you want to end
2. Click 'Go to Process'
3. It will change the tab and highlight the process
4. Press the Delete key
5. Click yes to the message box that comes up

That should kill the process without much hassle.

Hope is helps.

A:Task-manager Does not work

Do you have more than one monitor hooked up to your computer or did you have more than one recently?

The reason I ask is that this is a common reason for some Windows to open off-screen where you can not see them.

Here is a trick that helps if that is the case.

Follow these steps carefully because you are doing it blindly.

Right click your taskbar and open TASK MANAGER by selecting START TASK MANAGER
Press these keys on your keyboard.
left arrow
down arrow
down arrow
right arrow

now move your mouse to where you can see it and you should see your task manager window attached to your mouse pointer.

Let us know if this helps.

My Task Manager has stopped working and followed the thread suggesting it could be a malware issue, which in turn directed me to the HijackThis Log Help Forum.

On using CTRL + ALT + DEL or by right-clicking the task bar and on selecting the fully lit tab called "Task Manager", it does not appear. The screen flashes and then returns to the current open window. I have had this problem since I joined the company 4 months ago and I am the network administrator.

I am running an XP Pro SP3 client PC on a small network as the administrator and have been protected by Kaspersky Anti-Virus running anti-virus and anti-spy among others for over a year updated from the server when the signatures arrive. Very liitle date is stored locally to the machine, everything being stored on the server.

As suggested on this forum following your steps, I checked Spyware Warrior for malware and none on the list were present on this PC; I performed the online scan using Panda Active scan (see log below); I downloaded Spy Blaster as suggested; and installed HijackThis (see log below).

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave, and if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have "vanished" .

We need to create an OTViewIt ReportPlease download OTViewIt by OldTimer.
Save it to your desktop.
Double click on the icon on your desktop.
Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
Push the button.
Two reports will open, copy and paste them... Read more

I seem to have some sort of virus that has stopped my task manager from being accessed at all and my system restore will only go back a few days. I have run adaware, spybot, ewido,SUPERantispyware and AVG. All found problems but none cleared the virus. My wife has had her card details stolen from the computer and I'm getting paranoid about using it for anything internet based. I'm using windows XP with an NTL broadband connection. Hope this is enough info for someone to help, please answer in easy to understand language as I find these computer things confusing and just a little annoying.

Greetings all, an apologies if this is in the wrong section.

Computer is a home build desktop, Asus M/B, AMD HD6670 graphics, 256meg SSD as boot drive c: Win7 32 bit.

I had a few problems with this computer and finally did a full format and re-install with system disk pre SP1. Everything working fine. Launched into full updates from windows, loaded all available updates and guess what; windows Desktop Manager fails and won't start. Computer is otherwise fine. I've installed latest drivers for the video card, updated my M/B bios, run sfc /scannow which showed all system files OK, full pre boot virus scan with Avast, full scan with Malwarebytes.

I've done all this about five times now. The problem seems to his after installing Iexplorer 10 and/or SP1. I haven't figured that one out yet, and I'd rather have a nearly working computer than one in a constant state of upheaval.

Having been looking around the web for an answer it would seem that this problem is not limited to certain hardware but seems quite happy to occur with just about anything. Any help that solves this will be much appreciated and rewarded with a curry and a beer.

A:Windows Desktop Manager not working, wont work, can't fix.

I would try this:

Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

See if it continues to fail. You might want to do another Clean Install Windows 7 and then install all windows updates and drivers first. Then Once that is done install your software.

I am trying to restore my system using the system restore feature. I have ample room on my hardrive so that is not the issue. It keeps saying "restore incomplete, cannot restore using the date you have specified, choose another date." I've tried every day and checkpoint in the last 2 weeks but the same message comes up. Can anyone give me advise? Is something on my system possibly preventing it from running?

Thank you....new to forum.

I found this proposal solution to my problem but it is hard for me to install the proposed update System Restore does not work on a Windows 8.1-based computer 2955164. I have download run it, I left it open for 2 hours but nothing it only shows that try to find updates to my PC. Also I try to find updates from windows updates but it only seems to load.

What can I do?

I can make a restore to my system here is message I receive:
System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer. Temporarily disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore.

A:System Restore does not work on a Windows 8.1

Hello asi, and welcome to Eight Forums.

What AV program do you have installed?

Did you temporarily disable it to see if you could successfully perform a system restore afterwards?

Did you try to do a system restore at boot instead of from within Windows?

I have this problem where i want to restore my system, but once it goes through the process of restoring, I log back on to my computer after the initial restart to see that my system was unable to restore.
My task manager won't open as well, i get this MSG "Task manager has been disabled by your administrator". Well, I'm the administrator, so it doesn't make to much sense.

I scanned my computer with AVG, Spybot, and Malwarebyte in safemode. Which fixed one of my problems(couldn't log on). But i still cannot open my task manager or restore.

Having this problem solved would really relieve some stress. Thanks in advanced

If you need more information, feel free to ask! ill be checking back periodically

Hello all!!

I'm having an issue I can't solve.
Since 2/3 weeks I'm having problems with my taask manager.
ctrl alt del task manager pop-up doesn't work as ctrl alt esc.
After searching on google and trying to reactivate it(thought it was a virus due to my research) it still doesn't work.
The problem is that windows isnt showing any error message, it just doesnt pop up.
Also I've read about sfc/scannow (if im correct).
I did that but then there was a way to convert my crashes to an .txt file but when I did that the file was empty.
CMD told me that there were system problems but I can't find out what the problems are.
Also watching youtube-videos on HD(720p and 1080p) seems to crash the vids after a random time.
This looks like an hardware error but coincidal this showed up around the same time.
One last thing is that everytime I start up my computer windows asks to scan my drvies for space(if i'm correct).
This happens every time and most of the time scans both my drives, but sometimes it's just C: or E: (C is my windows drive and driver stuff, E: is documents and other stuff).
Thsi occured rougly about 2 days after the taskmanager problem started.

I know this is a long post, but i'd rather show all I know than to keep posting things I already knew ^^

I hope you guys know how to help me!!

A:Solved: task manager won't work!!!!!<<<

Try the instructions here: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Taskmanager_error.htm

If that doesn't help, you may be infected with something so:
Click here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I am working on the second computer in as many days that is exhibiting the following symptoms:
1. On bootup, I receive an error - generic host process for win32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close
2. I can't run regedit, cmd, or task manager. When I try, Explorer closes down, then restarts
3. The following registry entry was in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run: UserFaultCheck with a value of %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
4. Can't run housecall from Trend Micro - tried to run but it failed when attempting to install updates (used java version, html version failed also although I can't remember why)
5. Occasionally when booting up, Explorer does not load.

The above symptoms are the same in Safe Mode.

It strikes me as quite interesting that I've encountered 2 of these in the past 2 days, making me believe there may have been a bad update or there's some virus/malware causing the problem. I ran hijackthis and looked through the log file, but didn't see anything I thought was suspicious. I'll post it just the same.

Both computers were running Windows XP Home Edition, SP3. I can get to symantec.com and trendmicro.com, but not mcafee.com. Could conficker be involved?

I appreciate any help anyone can provide.

Here's my hijackthis log:

It's not opening up minimised is it? Do you have a dark green square box on your Taskbar near the clock. If so, try clicking on it.

My computer is getting really slow and I was told there have to be programs running in the background that are eating up all my memory. I went to the task manager and sure, there are a lot of programs there, but I wouldn't know which ones to delete, if any. I'm afraid I'd screw my whole computer up.

How can I tell which ones are necessary and which ones aren't?

A:I'm scared to work with my Task Manager

You are not deleting them, you are turning them off - When you restart the computer they will be back.

A:Task Manager Freezes/does not work.

Do you go to launch Task Manager for a purpose? (ie; to kill a program?)

If so - then that crash is probably related to the program that originally crashed.

Run this program (an alternate Task Manager) and see if it has the same problem - http://live.sysinternals.com/procexp.exe
