Stuttering, performance issues, internett connection issues

Q: Stuttering, performance issues, internett connection issues

OK so my computer is acting up. Two weeks ago while browsing suddenly i get error messages concerning dns failed something probe. Ever since, when i open a new link it takes almost 20-30 seconds to open the page...
When i want to view a new video on youtube, it takes alot of time concidering i have 75/75 up/down
Its not the download speed, once i get a connection it works fast, but still not as normal.
Also now ive started getting sound stuttering/lag in the video.
Today even the mouse curser lags behind the movement of my mouse and then quickly squirms around the screen catching up all the movement i did.
Does this have something to do with my SSD starting to fail?
Is there some virus hijacking my resources?
Are my drivers bad?

Preferred Solution: Stuttering, performance issues, internett connection issues

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Stuttering, performance issues, internett connection issues

Hello and Welcome ..

Does this have something to do with my SSD starting to fail?
Is there some virus hijacking my resources?
Are my drivers bad?

We can try to briefly check these with the following methods, or use stronger programs if required..

Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. This gives a preliminary reading, and clears your Antivirus/Antimalware programs.
You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/
Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
If using Windows Vista, 7 or 8 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
A black DOS box will briefly flash for a minute or so, and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
Do not reboot until you run the next few tools.
If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.
When the scan is done Notepad will open with Rkill log.
Post it in your next reply.
NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.
NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply.

Do you use a battery operated mouse or a USB direct connected one ? ?

Please download MiniToolBox  and save it to your desktop to run it.
It will run on Windows 8.1 regardless of what is stated
Checkmark the following boxes:
Flush DNS
Report I.E Proxy Settings
Reset I.E Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
Reset FF Proxy Settings
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and  copy / paste the notepad document with your next post..
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - , taking care to only post the link of the snapshot in your next post. << Full directions here -
Next -
Open Start > Control Panel > System > Device Manager to check for any Red or Yellow ( ? or ! ) signs.
Next -
Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
Click on the Scan button.
AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
When it's done you'll see: Pending: Please uncheck elements you don't want removed.
Now click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
Look over the log especially under Files/Folders for any program you want to save.
If there's a program you may want to save, just uncheck it from AdwCleaners list
If you're not sure, post the log for review. (all items found are usually  adware/spyware/foistware)
If you're ready to clean it all up.....click the Clean button.
After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S0].txt) will open automatically.
Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder.
Items that are deleted are moved to the Quarantine Folder: C:\AdwCleaner\Quarantine
NOTE - To restore an item that has been deleted by accident:
Go to Tools > Quarantine Manager > check what you want restored > now click on Restore.
To fully empty the Quarantine Manager, re-open Adwarecleaner and hit the Uninstall button, and reboot..
The program can be reinstalled later with the Updated Data base included
Next -
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) to your desktop.NOTE. If you already have MBAM 2.0 installed scroll down.
Double-click mbam-setup-2.x.x.xxxx.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:
Launch Malwarebytes Anti-MalwareNOTE - A 14 day trial of the Premium features is pre-selected. You may deselect this if you wish, and it will not diminish the scanning and removal capabilities of the program.
Click Finish.
On the Dashboard, click the 'Update Now >>' link
After the update completes, on Settings tab, set under Detection and Protection next options:
'Scan for rootkits';
Non-Malware Protection, for 'PUP detections', check, 'Threat detections as malware' option.
Return to Dashboard, click the 'Scan Now >>' button.
A Threat Scan will begin.
When the scan is complete, if there have been detections, click Apply Actions to allow MBAM to clean what was detected.
In some cases, a restart will be required.
Wait for the prompt to restart the computer to appear, than click on Yes.
If you already have MBAM 2.0 installed:
On the Dashboard, click the 'Update Now >>' link.
After the update completes, on Settings tab, set under Detection and Protection next options:
'Scan for rootkits';
Non-Malware Protection, for 'PUP detections', check, 'Threat detections as malware' option.
Return to Dashboard, click the Scan Now >> button.
A Threat Scan will begin.
When the scan is complete, if there have been detections, click Apply Actions to allow MBAM to clean what was detected.
In many cases, a restart will be required.
Wait for the prompt to restart the computer to appear, than click on Yes.
After the restart once you are back at your desktop, open MBAM once more.
Click on the History tab > Application Logs.
Double click on the Scan Log which shows the Date and time of the scan just performed.
Click 'Export'.
Click 'Copy to Clipboard'
Paste the contents of the clipboard into your reply.
Please post back if there are any problems, or you wish for more information.
Thank You..

I'm experiencing constant stuttering / animation lag (only graphical, the sound is fine) at every game AFTER i did a fresh install of my XP (the internet browser seems to lag too sometimes)
I had NO problem with these games BEFORE the reinstall (At the SAME graphical settings).
The only noticeable "error" was that i couldn't connect to the Windows Update Network and had to download the WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86 to make the updates work.
I've tried the Catalyst 12.8 driver (which worked fine on the previous install) as well as the new Catalyst 13.1, i also did several defragmenting and boot time defragmenting, updated CCCP to the latest and installed the newest version of MSI Afterburner (for checking temps and adjusting fan speed as usual) and i checked my computer with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Little word of advice to all you folks - do not let your roommates use your laptop, as they will return it to you running slow as ever and with wireless connection issues. Every couple of minutes, my WiFi decides to shut down for about 10 seconds, then reconnect. Also, when browsing in Firefox, it lags/freezes quite frequently, and sometimes I have to click a link 2 or 3 times before it will load. It seems almost as though when I click on a link, that's what causes the WiFi to turd out on me. Anywho, onto the logs.

Ok well it has been a while since I posted requesting help in here. I suppose that could be considered a good thing... Anyway I checked the "Preparation Guide For Use Before Using HijackThis and Other Malware Removal Tools" thread just to double check the proper way to post in here and noticed you guys mention to use a program called "DDS". I have never used this in the past, I have always only used HijackThis but I will, for the sake of covering all my bases, included both the DDS files and the HijackThis report.Ok on to the problem at hand. I will list the problems as I remember them in the order of when they happened (hopefully, knowing my memory...) starting with the more recent problems. (1.) What has happened recently is I have noticed that my processor has been maxing out at 100% doing things that would normally not require more than maybe 20% of the processor. (2.) I have recently done some fairly major creation/deletion/moving of files in hopes of lowering the amount of junk on my computer. I have also run a defragmentation on my hard drive but it is hard to tell if it really worked because whereas in Windows XP the disk defragmentation tool gave you the ability to analyze your hard drive and then actually watch the progress as it defragmented the hard drive, Windows Vista only gives you the ability to "Defragment Now" and then all you can do to tell whether or not it is done is to stare at the little 'Vista ... Greetings, I just switched my main computer from XP Pro to (in a different HD) Vista 64.
One of the reasons for the switch was that I had purchased the computer with 8GB of RAM and I wanted to see what kind of performance I could get from it.

These are my specs:
Computer Systemax
Processor: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU @ 2.40GHz (2397 MHz)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista x64
8GB of RAM (4 when I extracted these specs - I was testing to see performance)
DirectX version: 10.0

Realtek Winfast PX8600 GT HDMI(NVIDIA)
GPU processor: GeForce 8600 GT
ForceWare version: 162.22
Total av. graphics mem.:2014 MB
Dedicated video memory: 256 MB

As far as the performance issue, I am afraid I am not seeing a definite increase in performnce comparable to the XP Pro installation with just 4GB (3.25 to be exact, due to XP utilization of memory)

I am starting to woonder if there is something I can do to increase the system performance otehr than the obvious (Take out Aero, etc.) It's not the the computer is slow in handling programs, but some interface activities, such as opening and closing folders and windows, launching programs, etc. Are as fast or slower than on the XP OS.

Most recent problem:

It's actually hard to explain precisely what is going on, but I'll try my best.

With a frequency of about 4 times a day and with no apparent cause, the screen will go black. Open windows and the desktop below will flash on and off and if I move the mouse arrow ov... Read more

A:Vista 64 Issues - Pyrotechnic Desktop - Performance Issues

Performance is an elusive issue in higher end computers such as yours.First tho' - Most likely your graphics drivers are a tad bit corrupted, and the following will help to update them:Download the latest forceware drivers for your OS and video card (according to what I read, these are the most current: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x64_169.25_whql.html )Uninstall the nVidia stuff from Control Panel...Programs...Uninstall a program.Uninstall the video card from Device Manager (go to Start and type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter)Reboot and dismiss any "Found New Hardware" dialogs.Double click on the freshly downloaded drivers and follow the prompts. In most computers the big 3 performance issues are:- the hard drive- the RAM- the CPUSo, that's the first place to check. Luckily Vista has a number of tools to help with this. The first is Task Manger (right click on the Task Bar and select "Task Manager". Scroll through the tabs to see what's going on inside of your system.Next, go to Start and type in "compmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then start looking at this stuff (it's listed in the left hand pane):- Event Viewer...Windows Logs...both the Application and System logs- Reliability and Performance...Monitoring Tools...both the Performance and the Reliability monitors- Device Manager- Disk Management- Services and Applications...ServicesWhat are you looking for? I have Win7 x64 installed on a Packard Bell (sub-brand of Acer) MH35 laptop, also known as Hera-C.

The computer works fine otherwise, but flash video has skippy audio, and occasionally locks up for a few seconds, only to then jump forward in the video when it gets unstuck. This gets worse if I upsize the video; if I fullscreen it it just gets awful. Conversely, the skipping diminishes a lot (though it doesn't entirely go away) if I switch to another window. I've noticed that when I'm on another window it tends to skip a lot more if I do things like scrolling the page. Thing is, it's not just video - Grooveshark stutters too, and that's audio-only. Google Music as well.

The laptop has an awful SiS Mirage 3 video chipset, but I don't think that's the problem because it happens even with the generic VGA driver that Windows loads when I uninstall the SiS driver. Rather, it seems CPU-related somehow.

The video chipset has made it a massive problem to run Linux on this computer (Ubuntu doesn't even want to start), but the two distributions that get the widescreen resolution right - PCLinuxOS and Puppy, the former via proprietary driver and the latter via generic VESA - both run Flash flawlessly (though they have other video-related problems that make them unusable on the laptop).

What can I do to fix this? I tried to disable hardware acceleration in Flash and it did a whole lot of nothing. I'd much rather get Win7 working properly than fight more than I already have in an atte... Read more

Hey everyone

I have been having strange stuttering issues on my new Pc and i can't figure out whats causing it. Basically it happens randomly and what happens is the game i'm playing or youtube video i'm watching will start to stutter and then make a horrible noise out of my speakers. Its not constant but it happens quite often.

A friend was helping me with the issue last night and suggested that i go into device manager and click the drop down box for Network adaptors and disable 'Realtek PCIe GBE Family controller' as he had heard something before about disabling that solved an issue similar to mine. He said before i do however that i should come onto this forum and get a second opinion on the matter. I suggested that i should buy a sound card as i have onboard sound but he said wait until i have tried absolutly everything to solve the issue.

The issue seems to be most common with Dead Rising 2 but it can sometimes happen with my other games. Whilst in device manager i checked all my drivers and they are all up-to-date. Also if it helps my speakers plug in via USB and not the standard audio input. Any more information you require about my computer please feel free to ask and i am happy to give all information required to solve the issue

Thank you

Alright, I've got some weird problems. First of all, I'll describe my system:

Intel Extreme Series D975XBX2 Motherboard
Q6600 Quad Core 2.4 GHz Processor
4GB DDR2 Corsair RAM
256 MB DDR3 8600GT Graphics Card
Vista 64 bit OS

Here is the problem(s) I am having:

1) Audio stutters every 30 seconds or so for about 3-4 seconds.
- I've tried updating BIOS, but I get the same "Internal Error" type message everytime, even though it's the correct version that's supposed to be compatible with Vista 64.
- I've tried updating the audio drivers. The only driver that worked was the version that's about 2 releases old because the newer versions all had random errors and didn't work with Vista (even though they said they were supposed to).
- I thought if I turned off some advanced audio processing features it would fix the problem, but I can't get Intel Audio Studio installed because it says "This is not the correct driver for this sysetem" even though it IS.

2) BIOS refuses to update, saying "There is an internal error" or something along those lines. I looked up that error message in Intel's readme and it said it's due to a lack of hard drive space--but I have 450 GB free!
- An interesting thing I've noted during boot is that it says "No hard drive is detected!" when going through it's RAID check. I'm not set up for RAID, so I'm not even sure why it does this check. But, I think this could be causing the BIOS update error-... Read more

Hello all!

I'm very new to these forums so hello to everyone!

I've looked through a bunch of other threads to find a solution to this problem and so far haven't had any luck, so here goes.

I've recently done a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate RC 64-bit Build 7100 on my Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine for the most part but recently i've been getting an odd stuttering when booting into windows. This problem seems to occur randomly; sometimes windows boots and is perfectly fine. I've also noticed that neither my network or sound volume icons appear on the taskbar and many programs refuse to launch. Right clicking on the desktop seems to show the most noticeable stuttering since it takes 5-6 seconds for the menu to appear. Basically it makes windows unusable.

There are a couple of things that i can think of that may be causing this but i'd like to see if any of you might have come across this before i spend time reinstalling every application or reinstalling windows!

I've got a Quad-core Intel Centrino, 8GB RAM, nVidia 8800 GTS, Creative X-Fi Fatality. I've installed manufacturer drivers for the sound and graphics cards. I also have Steam, Norton Internet Security 2009 and MagicDisc (Virtual CD Drive) installed. I do have MagicDisc and Norton installed on my laptop which is running the same version of windows and i've had no problems with that.

Any help on this would be appreciated! Thanks in advance for any responses!

A:Windows 7 Boot Issues and Stuttering!!! HELP!!!

I had this exact same issue when turning my Dell M1530 laptop on today with Windows 7 RTM 32-bit which I installed yesterday. I have Norton Internet Security 2010 beta installed, I think this may be the cause.

You also seem to have Norton but the 2009 version, I believe the 2009 version is also in beta for Windows 7.

I think this could be a problem with Norton even though you said it works for your laptop. We should try a different security product which should solve this issue.

Recently my s940 has just started having issues. mainly that the cursor will move but leave an image of where it came from and the typing stutters and lags a bit. There is also a grpahical issue where windows will load in strips vertically across the screen until you scroll.

A:Cursor stuttering, typing lag and graphic issues

Start with the first solution and work your way down the list until you find the one that works for you. Reinstall the mouse driverUpdate the graphics card driverCheck the local area network settingsEnd Realtek audio.Other options1) Disable Cortana. Many users have reported that disabling Cortana helped fix  their freezing mouse. 2) Disable ATI HotKey Poller service. Many user have also reported that ATI Catalyst drivers including an ATI HotKey Poller service can cause mouse lag in certain system configurations. If you don?t need the ATI hotkeys, just disable this service. Here?s how you can do it:a) Press the Windows key and R at the same time, type services.msc in and press Enter. b) Locate ATI HotKey Poller service on the right side of the window. Then double-click it. c) You?ll be in the Properties window. Change the Startup type to Disabled. Then click Apply and OK. d) Restart your computer. 3) Don?t use USB hubs to connect your mouse. Directly connect your mouse and keyboard to your computer via the ports at the back of your PC to ensure you get the best performance. 4) Try to temporarily disconnect other USB peripherals, such as a digital camera, USB disk drive and so on. This will help you confirm whether this problem is caused by device conflicts.  Regards,Adrian

Hi guys,

There are 2 issues I am trying to resolve at the moment one which has been ongoing and triggered a clean reinstall to try to resolve and the other that has occurred since the install.

I am having trouble playing HD files in iTunes. Playback is stuttering and freezing during HD playback but not SD. Previously it was both but now the SD files are playing without incident. CPU is being taxed to 100% during playback. New memory module has been installed due to faulty one being identified after reinstall of OS.

I am running alienware m15x (first version, so coming up on 3yrs) with windows 7. Although the computer is getting on the components are still nearly top of the line performance wise. There is a blueray drive installed and other HD audio therefore I would be very confused to see it was the specs that were the problem here. See end of post for specs. Please let me know if you think they may be causing any issues.

After the reinstall I moved all my iTunes purchases to an external hard drive to prevent loss. However I have noticed that Lost Season 3 is only showing up as Lost in the TV Show Library. I have tried manually managing the iTunes folders and creating a new library but neither has resolved the issue.

Does anyone know how edit the files info through the library files, it appears they can be opened in a web browser but I couldn't find the right place to edit.

I've been trying to look all over the web to see what could be the issue of my laptop randomly freezing. Ingame when i play League of Legends it happens frequently now where my Frames drop completely to the point where i cant see anything for a while, it is stuck on 1 frame. But i recently also started noticing some issues when watching a video on youtube where either the video would stop, and then play out as in hyperspeed, whilst the sound would normally continue.
I've been looking aswell on what might be the problem causing this and i checked my pc for malware/spyware/etc. and there was nothing on it (except for those damned tracker cookies). The temperature of my vents and cores are perfectly fine aswell which i checked with speedfan/GPU-Z. (i must add that i recently let my laptop get repaired and they replaced the vents, added new cooling paste and gave me a new C: drive). So dust can't be the issue since it has just been fully cleaned.
HOWEVER, i have been looking and seen some people write about running scf /scannow in CMD. This gave me the result that there were some files that could not be repaired. So i kept reading and tried to extract the Log into a Txt file so i could see for myself what was wrong. When i opened and looked through it i saw like 6-8 problems that could not be repaired, but i have no idea what to do or if im even on the right track.

sfc /scannow
Will repair files just let it do its thing!
Run command prompt as administrator then run sfc /scannow
You can run it from a recovery tool like this -
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows
Windows might be at C:\Windows when you're using it, but D:\Windows from the Command Prompt in System Recovery Options.
In most installations of Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7, C: usually becomes D: and in Windows Vista, C: is usually still C:. To check for sure, look for the drive with theUsers folder on it - that will be the drive Windows is installed on, unless you have multiple installations of Windows on multiple drives.

Hi.  A couple months ago, my computer started having a range of issues.  I will detail the issues and the steps I've taken to try to correct them and what is going on now.  It all seems related to me, though may not necessarily be.
First off, here are my quick specs:
Intel i7 2600

-Frequent Kernel-based video card crashes
-Frequent driver failure for the video card
-The mouse cursor would jump to the edge of the screen
-The mouse cursor would change when browsing the web (ie, the hand point sometimes over text boxes, the typing cursor over non-textboxes)
-When alt-tabbing from facebook to World of Warcraft, the monitor would go into power save mode and not come out of it, requiring me to press the power button the PC to turn it off.
-Sometimes when shutting the computer down, the fans and front vanity light would remain on and not turn off (even after 10 minutes).  This would require me to hold the power button down to power off.  This would happen during Restarts as well--the system would not actually restart and just hang in this mode.

Within 3 minutes of turning my computer on, my monitor went into power save mode when alt-tabbing back into World of Warcraft. I noticed that before it happened, there was a system stall for 5-10 seconds and sounds stalled as well. I had Ventrilo open, 1 window of Firefox open to a facebook message, WoW, and HW Monitor (temps were in the low 30s across the board as I just turned the system on).

Double checked my power save options and the monitor and system are still set to never sleep.

Hello, and thank you in advance for your help. A few months ago, my system became infected: namely, AntiMalware Doctor and the Google redirect virus. After getting some help from Microsoft Customer Support, I found your forums. Since then, I have received lots of help from Malware Response Team member Sempai. I'm happy to say the infections appear to be gone; however, some issues seem to persist. Audio & video is choppy and stuttered. This occurs with all audio and video, from my own music and videos on my HD to youtube and other streaming video to games run through flash, java, etc. The only site that doesn't seem to be choppy is Hulu. For some reason, their video comes through with no issue. My main issue is with SlingPlayer, an application that uses my SlingBox (a device hooked to my cable box that allows me to stream my television online) that worked with no problems before. Now, it is unwatchable, due to the extreme stuttering. I have tried letting it buffer, but no amount of storing up the video seems to matter. Also, youtube and other streaming videos tend to run a little better once I have let them completely load, but it doesn't always work and it isn't perfect. Whenever I Restart my computer, the audio controls on my machine stop working, and the Volume icon on my system tray disappears. I effectively have no volume control. The only remedy for this that I've been able to figure out has been using System Restore to go back a day or so. Then, ... Read more

Unless you have a really huge hard drive...I suggest that you run the appropriate hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic on your hard drive.

I have 500GB drives that run those tools substantially quicker.

What you seem to diagnose as driver errors...may be indicative of a failing hard drive or damaged system files.

As the topic says, I'm having extreme sound stuttering & distortion issues using the latest driver for this old graphic card (179.48, February 2009). I cannot browse a webpage with Flash content without hearing crackling sound. Same thing happen whenever I'm playing mp3 file and opening applications on Windows.
I can certainly state that the driver is causing this issue, since disabling other components and devices on my laptop won't help. Furthermore, installing some very old driver (98.02) seems to fix the issue, but as you may understand, performance is terrible and I am not even able to watch movies smoothly on youtube.

My question is: is there a way to compare these two drivers and manage to mod the newest as to remove the sound stuterring issues?
If not, is there an updated driver available anywhere? I understand my laptop is 7 years old, yet it is fully functional and working properly; I wish Nvidia didn't stop supporting that video card 3 years after its release.

For the record, I have always tried to install some 300.x drivers series using modded inf, without success (either installing it wouldn't work using the 'Have disk' Method, or it would work but performance was terrible).

I'm using Windows 7 32bits. I am suffering the same issue on the 64 bits edition as well as on Windows 8 (drivers are the same anyways!).
Any help would be strongly appreciated.

I do not see any newer drivers. Have you tried letting windows install default drivers? Uninstall the nvidia drivers, reboot and let windows install.

Recently my s940 has just started having issues. mainly that the cursor will move but leave an image of where it came from and the typing stutters and lags a bit. There is also a grpahical issue where windows will load in strips vertically across the screen until you scroll. Something i did notice is that intel utility was reccomending a graphics driver update but upon trying to do that it said it was not validated for this machine as it is not reccomended in lenovo's update utility. I have manually installed the driver but that causes far more issues graphically. it definetely feels like there is a driver issue Updating via lenovo website has still not fixed this despite it being fine last week.

Okay, About three months ago, I got hacked HARD...permissions were changed, administrator rights were removed from my administrator accounts, etc. i was flabbergasted. THe iactually didn't bother me though until I ran a MBAM scan and found 133 viruses and spyware instances on my drive (NOT including tracking cookies!). I cleaned and recleaned, using MBAM, SuperantiSpyware, Avira, running each one in safe mode first, then loading into my normal account and running them, and finally erasing my user account and creating a new one. But even after the new user account was created with Administrator privileges, I still routinely received virus and Malware threat warnign flags from MBAM and Avira. Eventually, Avira and MBAM were disabled and Avira was "deleted" (Windows will not uninstall because the setup.exe file has been 'Changed" and won't reinstall it because I don't have "Administrator privileges" on my Administrator accounts!) even though at startup I receive an error message saying that Avira has been corrupted. The most telling issue is that antivirus and spyware/Malware scans come up clean on Safe mode scans, but using my normal account, the machine reboots. Using Superantispyware I notice that it's always during the memory test that this occurs (and in Safe Mode, it passes through this section with no issue). None of my antivirus programs will download updates, even ones I start manually, and although I have no problem acc... Read more

i've been having problems with my system slowing down. I've MS Defender & AVG running daily, I've run Ad-ware with no problems. Running Spybot 1.5 found over 200 problems but on fixing it removed access to my normal user account and I had to do a RESTORE. Things are now available but the system is again slow.

I note from the task manager that when I have problems "agent.exe" seems to be taking 97% CPU at times.

I also notice from the Hijack list that despite removing Norton from my system. elements of Symantic still remain. Are these a problem & can they be removed?

I had to pull the PC by the plug a few times a while back, ever since then, my PC cant play games.

Before the problems, all of my games ran smoother than silk. Now, my games, just seem to get slower as i play them.
They are unplayable in the first place, but i can tell they definately get slower.

I have...
-reinstalled/updated graphics card drivers
-changed my graphics card (i had a 8800GT now i have a 1GB ATI 5770 HD)...
-formatted and installed windows 7
-ran various tests (memtest, various hard disk checking tools) and all of them pass.
-Kept my hard drive in good condition
-reset the BIOS
-Ran 3D mark test - I have 2 1GB sticks of ram in A1 and B1 slots. I took B1 out and 3D mark ran slightly smoother.
Put the B1 chip into the A1 slot on its own, ran slightly smoother. Put both sticks back and it ran even slower.
I wouldnt say there is a dramatic different in speed, but it definately runs slower with both sticks in.

People have said its my RAM, one person said my hard drive. I dont want to buy any new components and find out its not the solution. This has to be hardware, as i have formatted and reset every other setting.

Oh yeah, when i am debuging websites in Visual Studio on my PC, the sites run slower than would they would on the internet...

Can anyone help? Thanks

Hi -- I have recently started having issues with my laptops performance and have no clue what's going on. I did inherit this one from my older brother who is a developer so I know there is a lot installed on here which I don't need...

I've uninstalled all the applications I'm certain I won't be using, but there seems to be a lot of php or .net environment stuff on here that I'm not sure I should touch as I'm uncertain if it's required for something?

Task manager looks like nothing is taking up too much memory or CPU so I'm really puzzled as to why everything is just so slow to respond.

I'm running windows 10 on a 2 year old Alienware laptop (at least I think it's 2 years old), it's a legit copy, there's no CD but I'm pretty sure it doesn't need one - though... I'd love it if I could avoid spending a whole weekend re-installing everything! Thank you in advance for any help or light you can shed.

Hello there. So when I restore my computer to defaults, which is a dell XPS 8700, 8gb of ram, running windows 7 64 bit,I7 processor, everything is great.
But when I download the updates for windows, and put in the anti virus programs like malwarebytes or avast, download firefox and chrome, and all of the normal stuff for a good user experience; in game performance takes a serious dive. Its definitely what I would call an internet problem, as lag time and stuttering becomes huge. What can do to see whats taking up all of my bandwith, or reducing kbps? I looked at my resource monitor and nothing seems too high, and I went in cmd to look for Trojans but nothing.

Thanks for your time.

Game is Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare on Origin.

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Can you provide us with the Dell Service Tag number for the machine, then we can look up the exact specs for it?
Is it all exactly as it came out of the factory or have you changed / upgraded any parts?

If the problem isn't there before you download all the Windows updates etc then it is unlikely to be your internet, as that won't change just because you have updated Windows and/or drivers.

If this belongs in gaming more so than here, I'm sorry!

I'm running an ATI 5770, an Athlon II 2.8Ghz quad core CPU, and 4GB of RAM. MY PSU is a 550W OCZ Fatal1ty, and I'm on Windows 7 64-bit.

Up until about 2 months ago, everything I played ran fine - specifically, League of Legends and Starcraft II. (NOT demanding games in the least, and other things like BFBC:2 ran great as well)

At some point (not sure when or what I would have changed to caused this) I started getting slowdown - sporadic in LoL, constant down to 40 in crowded settings in SC2. Since then, I've taken all the steps normally associated with this sort of thing; nothing helped so I wiped the HD and re-installed Windows (Win 7) I'm on the latest service pack with all updates, have the latest GPU drivers, and furthermore just pressure-cleaned the case with an air compressor. I've been monitoring heat and my system stays at a constant ~24-27 while my CPU goes up to ~45 if I'm trying to push it.

I've ran diagnostics such as SpeedFan, Memtest86+ and CPUID, checked the SMART values of my HD, and manually measured my PSU voltages under load with a multimeter, all to no avail - I can't find a damn thing wrong with my system.

I'm at complete loss now, and simply have no idea what to check for next. In other forums, one person mentioned that just because my PSU voltages were fine didn't mean my PSU wasn't under excessive stress - are there any more tests I... Read more

I recently built a computer with the following specs:

Intel E6600 Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz Processor
2GB Ram
Nvidia 8800GTS Video Card (Factory overclocked by BFG)
Intel Motherboard
500GB 7200 RPM HDD

My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium

My issue is that the performance is not what I thought I could expect. Word takes about the same time to load as it did on my Dell E1505 using XP Pro, with a 2 Ghz processor, 1GB Ram... Most games (Call of Duty 2, Prey, etc) will run at max settings smoothly (frame rate ~60-75), with the exception of Halo 2, which tends to have horizontal tears even with lower settings... So for games it is fine. But for some programs - especially iTunes - it isn't that impressive.

Is it the programs? Is iTunes always very slow? For example, it takes it about 7-10 seconds to come up. (Does library size have to do with that?) Also, iTunes always starts with everything black... I have to maximize it and then reduce the window again in order for it to show up right... (UG) (Also can't scroll with the mouse wheel...)
Does Word typically take a while? (As in longer than 3-5 seconds?)

Or am I just expecting too much?

(Virus scans seem to take decades, but I'm guessing that's due to the 500GB HD...[1/2 full])

Hi Rousseau

Vista has a lot of overhead going on by default, and it's suitability as a gaming platform has gotten a pretty cold reception by gaming mags like MaximumPC. Some users have gone the route of keeping XP around via a dual-boot situation, and they game from XP. Performance is usually much better under XP. The DirectX 10 mess didn't help things much with Vista, either.

You can try trimming your optional start programs a little, and turning off your Indexing services (at least during gameplay). If you've several competing desktop indexers (both Vista's native Indexer & Google Desktop, for example) -- make sure they're off while playing.

I think you are very likely correct in your guess that your lengthy virus scans & slow indexing simply reflects the large amount of data involved. If iTunes checks it's library at startup, that would follow too = the larger the library, the slower the iTunes startup.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

P.S. User Account Control seems to add a delay for just about everything --- I'm not in a great hurry most of the time (and I put more emphasis on security than performance), so I leave UAC on. But if you have good protections in place, you could try disabling UAC for a bit, and see if that speeds up a few things - or not.

For about a week now i have been having serious performance issues. Even when i am doing very little on my computer such as using just word, my mouse will move sluggishly and the system for a few seconds will partially lock up and then its fine. I put task manager in the bottom bar so i can monitor my cpu and as i thought, when the system goes sluggish, my cpu is spiking all the way up to 90-100% use and then drops to normal. Have never had these kind of issues before and have been running this same set up for some time now. I ran a couple virus scans, spyware scans, smitfraud fix, chkdsk on the hd, ran windows update, defragmented the hd and still am having this same issue. Is there anything i can get that will tell me exactly what is spiking the system and when? Or is there something else i can do to help this issue. My computer set up is:

When the system goes sluggish open task manager and go to the performance tab. Then click on CPU on the list above the processes. This will list which processes are using the most CPU at that moment. If it does not show the highest CPU user at the top click CPU again to bring the highest resource hog to the top. Also check the show processes from all users checkbox so you can see everything that's running.

Lately, I have noticed performance issues on my Windows XP Media Center edition. I used to be on XP home, then I decided to try out vista, then from Vista I proceeded into X64, and then now to media center. I had never had any problems like the ones I have experienced lately.. Here's my problem:

I have been experiencing very very slow performance on my computer, but the biggest thing I notice is when I go onto internet pages and try and scroll down. I have a DSL connection and always have a very high connection so it has nothing to do with my internet, I also have other people on the router who have none of these problems, and I also had none of these problems before. As I scroll down on a page it lags the screen and then if I keep going fast it will give a system beep. I am wondering if possibly my processor or ram is messed up, or if X64 bit may have messed up my processor by activating the 64 bit part and now moving back? I have looked all over and found no solution to this problem, please help!!

Hello there,
I’ve just run a full scan on McAfee and it has come up with 0 issues and did not detect any viruses, spyware, or other threats (attached). Part of me wishes it had as my laptop is really not performing well at all.
I don’t know if it is to do with having too much on it but what is too much? Does too much protection actually impair the performance?
I seem to have more problems with my Thunderbird mail system and not sure that this isn’t affecting everything else. Not only do I not know, but I don’t know much about computers.
It just does seem so slow............................
I have thought about getting the laptop serviced, if such a thing is possible, but I thought I’d come here first, knowing that the answer might well be here within these four walls.
Any help is greatly appreciated, as are any thoughts.
Many thanks

Greetings to all. OS is Win 7x64 Pro
For the past week computer has become sluggish in response. When opening folders I get infinite loop and the message that it is not responding. When connected to Internet webpages are slow to open and at times unresponsive and again message that such and such is not responding. At times Internet Explorer has stopped working pop-up. This is becoming more frequent.
I've checked in the Event Viewer and there are several IEXPLORER.EXE faulting errors.
I am not running that many programs on startup. I've run malware as well as anti-virus scans and results are negative. I've tried some solutions as proposed by Microsoft Answers including MrFixit.
Hoping someone in forum has a solution. Mini Toolbox report is included.MiniToolBox by Farbar Version: 13-07-2013

Hi All

For some reason my laptop has started to crawl... it is really slow and I can't figure out why. When I view the Task Manager and am doing nothing, the cpu is at 20% but as soon as I do anything, the cpu rises to 100% - whatever it is that I do.

If I have a few windows open, the system takes a few seconds to render the page when I flick between these windows. Even firefox takes an age to display the screen which isn't my internet connection but is the laptop performance.

What can I do to determine which application is malfunctioning and eating up my cpu cycles...

My system originally had one 512 stick of unknown origin and two 256 sticks from kensington. I don't know anything else about those RAMs. I just bought a 512 stick from PNY, DDR400, and a gig stick from Centon, also DDR400. I put these two in with my old 512, expecting the huge increase I got when I upgraded my RAM to one gig, but there's been hardly any change. Doom 3 is faster, but the speed is also less constant. Before, the game would slow down a bit coming through doors and such, but now it slows intermittently as if it had a pulse. And Morrowind actually runs slower outdoors, and indoors has some weird slowdowns unlike anything I've seen. Normal slowdowns you feel like you're stuck in mud and the frames come more slowly one after the other. Now I can look around at the same speed, but the visuals get all choppy like cards being flipped to animate something. What's wrong? Is my RAM too cheap? Do I need a better processor? Is my RAM too mix'n matched?

A:RAM performance issues

The RAM doesnt really affect game performance unless there is a compatability problem. Adding more RAM mostly makes the game and levels load faster. Some motherboards dont like it when you mix and match RAM. Also if your old stick of 512mb is PC2100 or 2700 the new PC 3200 RAM will default to the lower speed. It would help to know your system specs.

Firefox seems to be slow, but it's not about the connection. Whenever I try to scroll through a web page or type in text in the web page (especially in this thread), there's always this delay. Sometimes it gives the "not responding" statement for a few seconds before it resumes.

I have a Pentium 4 3.2 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, Geforce 8800 GTS, 320 GB HD, and a Windows 7 Build 7100.

I am running Windows XP Home Edition and I am having extremely slow performance at certain times. The performance is usually slowest at startup, when on the internet, and while playing games. Startup procedures may take 10 minutes before the computer is functional, the internet may take 5 minutes to come or never open or the internet will simply run incredibly slowly (this is especially a problem with firefox and when on facebook), and when I am playing games (such as Warcraft III) the computer runs extremely slowly (especially when the internet is running). Sometimes when I minimize a game and try to maximize it will be as long as two minutes to maximize the program.

Let me know what information you need to help.

Our home desktop has become very sluggish, and sometimes lately it even locks up. There are six people in the house that use the machine, so I am unable to even figure out who may have done what to start the problems. I havent deleted any programs, and believe I have completed all of the required initial steps for posting a help request. Thanks.

I am having issues with the performance of my PC and am unsure as to what the problem may be.
I first noticed when playing a pc game - my frames per second were at around 20-40 whereas they had previously been at 120 or so.
I noticed that the system was running a bit sluggish also.

I tried cleaning up everything, uninstalling everything I did not use, defragging, virus and malware checking (Windows security essentials and MBAMM respectively. And finally tried reinstalling windows 7.

On my fresh system I reinstalled all the drivers and updated the graphics driver to the current version.
I then reinstalled the game, and am still suffering the same low FPS.

Thinking it may be an issue with the game (perhaps a new patch messing things up) I have run a benchmark test "performance test" (a free test) and my PC is well under what it should be according to the specs.

Have you any advice on how I can sort this, or what the issue may be?

Thanks so much in advance!

Well, I never thought Id see the day ..

system wont boot up properly, sometimes have to tell it to boot from XP disk which seems to work but Im not sure if its just a matter of it trying to boot several times. Even without the disk, it boots sometimes on its own. Other times ti locks up at the blue MS welcome screen.

When shutting down, I always get the pop up DirectDBNotify which Ive Googled. Ive only found it to be a MS problem not a virus or spyware.

I have up todate trendmicro antivirus and spyware which picks up nothing. Also ran Adaware, Spybot and Spyblaster to no avail.

There is still 25% left vacant on the programs disk so I dont think its that.

the system Im referring to is P4 1.6ghz with 1gb ram

also when changing users on express email, you can walk away, have a coffee, go to the store, read the paper, then come back, THEN the user changes! My Commodore 32 is faster (thank God I kept it )

this happens with the least amount of program running too. Like when you open express and Explorer for instance.

Also, when you go into Cntr Alt Del and check performance, the processor is peaked much of the time at 100%

I vacuumed it out - wasn't too dusty so I dont think heat is an issue either.

Any suggestions would be great

I was kind've unsure where to post this for I am unknown to the problem.

Recently, I reinstalled Vista because the old OS had annoying errors due to uncomplete installs, compatibility problems, etc. Well, all is fine and dandy. I installed my usual programs again, delete the Windows.old folder. Now the issue is my performance. I've made some usual suggestions from PcPitstop Optimize, and various other programs which worked with my old OS.

The problem lies with my internet being slower than usual, computer stalling more when running multiple applications along with skipping music under heavy payload. I recently ran a raid on WoW and actually DC'ed which NEVER happened. Had some unhappy campers... None of these happened with my old vista installation. Am I missing something? Device drivers? Device Mgr doesn't state anything wrong and I've run multiple tests. Anyone have any ideas or tests? Change in router settings with MTU or something?

Also as a side problem, Facebook refuses to cooperate with Firefox by being unable to navigate with links on their page. Therefore I have to use Chrome which has a problem with opening emails with Hotmail. I never had these problems before? I've reinstalled both browsers multiple times.

Thanks for any help.

hi, i'm a noob at this site and i wasn't quite sure where to post this, so sorry if i'm in the wrong place.
So anyway i have a
GA-P35-DS3 mobo
q6600 @ 2.6ghz OC,
2gb kingston 800mhz,
gigabyte GV-RX387512H-B (hd 3870),
500gb western digital sata 2
and a 500 watt psu.
My friend has extactly the same cuz we got them at the same time but for some reason he can run games fine at hi res but mine just can't hack it. For example cod4 maxed at 1600x1200 he runs at 40-60 fps but i run it at about 8-28 fps, he runs crysis at 30-40 fps high @ 16x1200 but i have to play it on lowest at that res to get playable frames. I was hoping someone would have an idea about what the problem is because i really would like to avoid sending it back because i've OCed it so i'm pretty sure theywont take it without money.

Any help would be appriciated, cheers
