Removable Disk Issues - Work through issues

Q: Removable Disk Issues - Work through issues

Hello Forum,

I have two removable disks.

One is write protected (D) - I want to know if you can alter that property.

I have just put them into my laptop and discovered the presence of New Folder - with a zip folder in it and another folder called Found. Want to know how that got created.

The other question I have is that the removable disks had the status of being shared and could be accessed via the network - I was wondering if I had done that correctly? I have attached what folders were shared prior and also a screen shot of what I unchecked to get it off the network.

I have been transferring data from one computer to another.

I have noticed that I have two new folders.

1> I have noticed that the folders have duplicated for some reason - maybe I copied and pasted.
2> One is write protected and the other is not.
3 > I have the situation that I have a - New Folder with a zip folder in it
and another folder called Found Folder.
4 > The removable disks were previously shared and I have gone in and changed the sharing as per my screen shots.

I have attached a copy of the situation - I would just like to know if there is any resolution to the above issues

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Found folders are usually created when you run CHKDSK on a disk.

I end up with New Folder if I start to create a folder and then stop before I name it.

What type of external disks are they?

Hello all,

I currently have a Dell computer given to me by my old employer that is running into validation/registry issues. The computer is now at my new employer since it was faster than what they originally had for me. I am assuming the computer originally had a KMS activated copy of Windows 7 Enterprise but I can't be sure. I first noticed issued awhile ago when a dialogue box saying something on the lines of I could be a victim of software piracy or something. I just closed it out and didn't pay much attention to it.

I then tried to download Microsoft Visual C++ as a program requested that I do so and I got the 0x80070005 - Access is denied error. I've researched and a bit and even bought a new copy (with CD) of Windows 7 Pro. I was a fool and thought I could just plug in the new key and it would be fine. I've tried the whole SubInACL deal and got errors so I'm not sure what I should do next.

I could do a fresh install but 1. This is now my primary work computer so I don't want to lose anything. I am somewhat scared of doing a fresh install, a restore, etc. I honestly don't know the difference all that well.

I also forgot to mention I have the original CoA and I will give that information now:
Windows 7 Pro OA

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

Hi All

I setup some rules to restrict users from using certain usb sticks, I have removed these rules (in gpedit) after some testing, now the computer is asking for an admin password each time I try to copy something to the hard drive, which it was not asking for before. I enter the admin password, and it denys me access to copy the data across.

It comes up saying Destination folder access Denied

I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. I will try and spend some more time figuring this out later today, but was after anyones feedback in regards to this issue. I feel like I am missing something very basic which is causing this to be an issue.

About a month ago, I began having isses with my removable devices. If I try to enter any device (microsd, flashdrive, external HD) through "Computer", I got "E: Application not found", but the devices work fine if you enter them with "Explore." This happened in any USB slot it used, so I doubt it was a faulty usb slot.

OS is Windows XP SP2, no problems besides the following:

Seems like a driver or something is missing for my USB controllers.

I have 4 things plugged into USB. Mobile phone, Printer, Camera and MP3 player.

Printer works fine, but the rest dont. They aren't recognised. Upon booting up, I get the "New Hardware Found Wizard" appear, attempting to install "USB Root Hub", but instantly after it then says

Failed to install the following device:

This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)

Any ideas?

The same with a USB hard drive, not recognised at all. So guessing it is something to do with the supposedly Unknown device.

Already tried Windows Update, as well as Dell's Support site (It's a Dell Dimension 8400).

Did the other devices come with software installation disks? Alot of those types of software usually need drivers installed prior to using them.

Hi all,

I'm running Win10 64bit. My sig has all my system details.

I use 2 SSD's and 1 internal HDD.

Issue 1:
My internal 2TB HDD is displayed in Device Manager as Portable Devices. This HDD hosts my User's Folders.

Issue 2: I have an external HDD which is a USB3.0 compatible. When it's connected to a USB3.0 port, the LED on the HDD is blue, and if it's USB2.0 the LED is white.
When I wake up the PC from Sleep mode, the HDD doesn't return to USB3.0 status, instead it's LED is white. Unplugging and re-plugging, won't help. I'll have to reboot the PC to get it back to USB3.0

I'd appreciate your help.
If more info is required, please let me know.

A:USB3.0 Issues and Internal HDD shows as removable

Your internal drive can show as a removable drive if:
It is set as a "Hot Swap" drive in the UEFI/BIOSYou have not installed the Asus SATA/AHCI controller driver

Is this a new, recent install? Upgrade or clean install?

When the USB problem occurs, is the external drive plugged into a USB3 port on the computer case, or in one of the ports in the back, attached directly to the motherboard?
If it is the case, try the rear port and see if the same problem occurs.

Okay, About three months ago, I got hacked HARD...permissions were changed, administrator rights were removed from my administrator accounts, etc. i was flabbergasted. THe iactually didn't bother me though until I ran a MBAM scan and found 133 viruses and spyware instances on my drive (NOT including tracking cookies!). I cleaned and recleaned, using MBAM, SuperantiSpyware, Avira, running each one in safe mode first, then loading into my normal account and running them, and finally erasing my user account and creating a new one. But even after the new user account was created with Administrator privileges, I still routinely received virus and Malware threat warnign flags from MBAM and Avira. Eventually, Avira and MBAM were disabled and Avira was "deleted" (Windows will not uninstall because the setup.exe file has been 'Changed" and won't reinstall it because I don't have "Administrator privileges" on my Administrator accounts!) even though at startup I receive an error message saying that Avira has been corrupted. The most telling issue is that antivirus and spyware/Malware scans come up clean on Safe mode scans, but using my normal account, the machine reboots. Using Superantispyware I notice that it's always during the memory test that this occurs (and in Safe Mode, it passes through this section with no issue). None of my antivirus programs will download updates, even ones I start manually, and although I have no problem acc... Read more

what is odd is if i have a disk in and boot the computer it will see the disk and show and work perfectly with that disk until i remove the disk and insert a new disk (this only happens with audio c.d's, dvd's data disks works perfect and blue rays are untested.

What a coincidence -- I have exactly the same BlueRay drive as you. However, my motherboard has two sets of SATA connectors and I have the BlueRay connected to the one that is NOT set as AHCI. I found when I had it connected to one of the AHCI connectors, I could not boot using it and had problems using it otherwise.

Hi all,
it's my first posting here thus I hope I'm doing everything fine.

I'm having this weird problem: after a PC crash I had found out that my Windows XP laptop (Compac nc6120) didn't see anymore any CD/DVD drive or any virtual CD/DVD drive. The device manager stated that the driver had been started correctly but there was no corresponding HW available (Error 41) which in the case of virtual drives is quite funny

I had already seen this problem on other PCs and solved it by removing Upper and Lower filter entries in the CurrentControlSet\Control\Class entry for CD-ROM and rebooted.

After reboot all disks were available as expected and I had to reinstall some of the CD-Writing software to re-install the needed upper and lower filters.

Now everithing seems to work fine with one notable exception: If I show devices in Groups Explorer insists in placing my CD/DVD both phyiscal and virtual in the "Hard Disk Drives" group.
This is not a problem in itself, except for some annoyances:
- When I insert a CD or DVD ROM Explorer says the HD is full and nags about clenaning it up
- Autostart does not seem to work as expected all the times

I've noticed that when I create a new virtual DVD or install an external CD-ROM, it is correctly seen as a "Removable" Device but I don't have any "Properties" option in the contextual menu.
If I refresh the explorer window (F5) then the same driver is seen as an HD, the "Properties" opti... Read more

Hi Paolo. Welcome to TSF.
It's possible some files got corrupted when your machine crashed. Try reinstating them by running sfc /scannow. Provided your XP installation disc has SP2 installed put it in your drive. If autorun isn't working you may have to start it manually. When it starts, press EXIT at the welcome screen. Then press Start>Run and type sfc /scannow in the box and press OK. You may have to press retry several times - this is normal. When finished, reboot your machine and see if this has improved things.

I read some other threads about this, but they didn't quite seem to help..

Yesterday, while browsing the internet, my computer went black, and upon restarting it, I get a black screen stating that my computer could not boot. It gives me a few options to reboot, run diagnostics, etc..

Upon running diagnostics, the computer tells me that I have an error 0141 and that there is no disk drive. I have tried reseating the hard drive, and rebooting, as this has apparently been enough for other people, however, i still continue to get the same error.

Is there anything else I could try to do to fix this problem without taking my computer in to be fixed?

Hello, and thanks in advance for any help that anyone may be able to give me.
Yesterday, my laptop started giving me errors about low disk space. My first assumption is that it is some sort of virus, because I have hardly anything on this laptop aside from a few songs and games, and the hard drive has over 100 gigs. I'm not sure what kind of further information that may be needed... I am running Windows XP and I use ZoneAlarm Security Suite.
Also, I'm not sure if this problem is related or not, but my first and only idea in terms of fixing this problem was to do a system restore. I tried that, and none of the available restores seem to go through--each time I get an error saying that my system was unable to be restored to the chosen date. Is there something I can do to fix this problem as well?

Hi everyone, hope there is some one that can help. I view my event log regularly lately. I have a message that states HarDdisk0/D, has a bad block. Is this my hard drive? I'm not sure what to do, I want to avoid a crash. My tech support through my manufacturer is not responding. Hope theres help out there somewhere

A:Hard disk issues?

Yes it is. Hard disks start at 0. In my PC, harddisk0 is c: and harddisk1 is d: Chkdisk may be able to isolate the block. I would back everything up ASAP, as chances are you will need a new HDD.

OK... I've checked other forum threads after searching google, so i will be able to skip a couple steps in troubleshooting here...

after installing service pack 2 i ran the defrag that comes with windows, it opened - but when i tried to start defragmenting it gave me a generic message - something like "could not start disk defragmenter"

(this was also after fighting off and removing several trojans/malware programs that automaticly loaded from my browser without permission. I removed them with avira and repaired windows through the setup disk... which is why i finally gave in and installed SP2)

tried running defrag c: in command prompt- same result
tried running defrag in safe mode - same result
tried running through command prompt while in safe mode - same result.

ran chkdsk - after restart it ran so fast i didnt see what it said... assuming if it had an issue it would wait for a responce from me?

page file is set to max - 75% disk space free on c:

was able to defrag my MP3 player just fine.

after checking all of this i installed diskeeper 09 and it still didnt work

checked to see if the disk was dirty, disk was not dirty.

as you can see, ive tried everything i could think of, and checked other forums, including an earlier post on this forum -im clueless - any ideas?

So we have an email program provided by a company we use for our catalog as part of their service - IDMI web based email. However, we all have Outlook installed on our computers and that is the email program we all use. When the IDMI inbox, outbox, deleted file gets filled - nothing works !!!! So I went in today and deleted everything I did not need - emptied deleted folder - clean up all the other folders and still no change. I cannot receive any email and this is a vital part of my position - co-workers and customers are receiving the message that my in-box is full and can no longer receive emails. PLEASE HELP - Thank you.

I don't use IE (Firefox instead) but this has been bugging me for a while since sometimes IE is useful.

Whenever I open IE, I get a message that says "No connection to the internet is currently available. To view Internet content that has been saved on your computer click Work Offline. Click Try Again to attempt to connect." My comp is always connected to the internet. Firefox, Yahoo IM, and AOL work fine; but IE refuses to ever detect a connection. If I click "Try again" it connects just fine. What is that about?

I had a trojan and some other malware a little bit back and your helpful techs helped me remove them. So I am clear in that aspect. They told me to go here after they got me clear and I am just getting around to it.

Correction: Yahoo IM is not working as it should. It keeps disconnecting every few hours. Not sure why. Started happening after the trojan/malware was removed.

Also, before the whole trojan/malware deal, whenever I got email, a Yahoo IM feature alerted me to the new message. That alert still shows up, but before I could double click that icon and a Firefox window would open up and take me to my Yahoo mail inbox. Now when I double click it, the icon goes away but no Firefox window opens.

Let me know what other info you need.

Hello guys,

I'm having an issue at work right now where a lot of spam email seems to be coming through the exchange server and not being blocked by trend micro. It just started doing this recently. I've also noticed that some of the spam emails are coming from the peoples email addy's that work here... any ideas on why it's not being blocked anymore? It used to block the spam fine and we would only get a couple a day, but now we are getting over 200+ spam mails every couple hours. When I clear the spam folder 2+ spam mails keep coming through.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi guys.

My dilemma started with trying to transfer files from 1 micro sd to another micro sd.

I followed this guys thread:

Managed to copy all the files, removed the sd card, inserted the new sd card, and then I get the above error.
Changing the drive does not work.

How can I copy all from 1 sd to the next sd?

When I insert the old sd back, the drive works fine and shows all my files, but the moment I swap it for the new sd I get the error to insert a disk.

Hope someone can help. Thank you.

Okay, well basically I got my desktop back from repairs about a week ago, they had replaced my faulty hard-drive and in the process got rid of the Acer eRecovery management partition that was built into my hard-drive.

Now, I was wondering whether or not it was worth either buying another restore disk (?50!) or just torrenting (Sorry if this isn't allowed mentioning this here) an Operating System. (Windows 7)

Also, I want to know whether or not the restore disk would replace an Operating System on my hard-drive or not.

Please help me out guys!

Hi and welcome to TSF buying a disc is the safest option and should work with the new hdd, never use the other method as it will always lead to trouble these files are usually a malware nightmare

Hi guy's I'm using a gateway FX 6831, windows 7 home premium with a failing harddrive so I recently bought a new one that I'm going to use to clone the first. So I wanted to use a rescue disk I created with Hiren's on a USB stick to do the job. I used to use it with this computer and some others with no problems. (I tested it today with another pc and it worked perfectly.) Now everytime I try to boot it up with my failing computer it gives me this message during bootup "remove disk or other media press any key to restart" I tried removing everything that was connected to the computer except for that one USB and it still gives me that message. If I remove the USB itself and press a key it continues to boot into windows instead. Any help would be very appreciated, thank you!

A:Issues when trying to boot from a USB recovery disk.

I am no expert so usual caveats, but I have had fairly similar issues. Have you tried the stick in a USB2 port? I don't think Windows 7 natively loads USB3 drivers at boot up from most recovery discs / sticks. Can you get to a point where it asks if you want to install any drivers? I always find a repair CD is more robust, I never have much luck with USB stuff.

My PC reset itself yesterday to apply an update. It all seemed to be going fine until I was unable to boot my PC up beyond the Lenovo screen. I tried restore points, running a diagnosis, running an auto-repair, but nothing worked. Eventually, I gave up and chose a windows refresh. My computer boots now, but it has a consistently high disk usage and sporadic CPU spikes.

Looks like the highest thing in my CPU usage is the Windows Module Installer Worker. Attached some screenshots. Not sure if they'll be of any use. I'm not too tech-savvy.

My problem started two days ago, as I turned on my computer, it was slow going through the usual BIOS checks, and when it went to boot Windows XP, it could not boot.

I restarted and the problem occurred several times. I looked in the BIOS setup, and found that neither of my hard drives were detected. I tried the hard drive with my OS installation, in another computer which works, and this hard drive was recognized by the system, and I could access the files on it.

I placed this back into my system, and found that the BIOS recognized it, but not my other hard drive. I could boot into Windows, and everything was fine, apart from my second hard drive. So I took out the second hard drive, and placed that into another system, and it was not recognized by the BIOS or OS. I double checked the connections, and they were fine.

When I placed this drive back into my system, it would not read this drive either.

Today, as I turned on my system, it only got as far as the BIOS logo screen, and would not progress further. When I tried Tab and Delete to move into Setup, or Post screen, nothing happened.

I am now stumped as to what the problem could be. I tried taking out both hard drives and booting from a Linux disc, as this worked before, but this did not have any result.

Any Suggestions?

My PC (system specs below) was working fine until 2 days ago. I sat down to my com, restarted it (even using the Win98 menu to do so) and when it rebooted it got to the part saying "Checking DMI pool data..." or something like that, and then gave me "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

I did this, and it seemed to be booting okay until it got to "Checking PCI Bus using Mechanism #2" and then it just sat there. I tried this mulitiple times with the same result.

The curious thing is, I have two HDDs on my PC. Drive C: is my main drive, while drive D: holds non-essential data (mostly mp3s, etc.). I was able to get to a command prompt from the system disk, and apparently my PC now thinks that the non-essential data drive is drive C:, and it can't even find a drive D: (or my CD-ROM). I have tried going into BIOS and auto-detecting hard drives but it doesn't seem to change the situation.

I'm at the end of my rope (which was short to begin with). Again, all I did was restart the computer via Windows. ANY help would be appreciated!

Do you have a Win98 bootdisk? Try running fdisk /mbr at a prompt and see if that works. If the drives cannot be autodetected in the BIOS, you may need 3rd party software to check drives for errors. Here are some links:

So I've been playing around with FreeNAS on another rig, you install the server on a USB drive and run the server form the flash drive. I've decided to go another rout and not use free nas so I went to format the 2 flash drives I was messing with and there are some partitions I can't remove with disk management, and space missing.

disk 1.jpg

Disk 3 should be 4GB large but I can only find the 943 MB

disk 2.jpg

disk 3.jpg

It doesn't give me any options to change the volumes on Disk 4.

any help would be great.

A:Disk Management reallocation issues.

You can try using diskpart to fix those volume issues or use some third party applications like Easeus Partition Master or Partition Wizard MiniTool.

We have an MSA 1000 storage device (9 x 73Gb 10K) disks. We are using almost all the space in use, obviously simply adding more disks will sove that issue.

However we are experiencing huge slow downs in accessing files on the the device, people's email freezing up, extremely slow accessing docs in general.

I have watched performance monitor when these problems occur, with the %Disk TIme and Avg. Disk Queue Length counters switched on and they are going through the roof.

Avg: 1113.651
Max: 4109.931
Min: 66.16

My problem is how do I track down what is causing this disk activity? It is not the disk where the Page File is, also the server is showing no high CPU or Memory usage so it is not struggling anywhere except for the disk usage.

Please help me work out where the problem is and if a new SAN or just new disks are needed?

The passed 3 months I've had issues with my C Hard drive, i have followed all different steps in order to fix the 100% disk use issues, from supercatch to changing system values, and none seem to work.

I am unsure what is causing the issues, it did used to be a windows 7 which got upgraded to windows 10. It is also a custom built PC now, as the hard drive used to be part of a prebuilt computer from before. If anybody has any other advice on how to resolve this issue i would very much appreciate it.

Thank you.

hi I got the same problem with 1 of my laptops
I have tried 19 different solutions but none of them worked

the only solution I haven't tried yet is completely erase the drive and partition everything from the beginning using windows 8, 8.1 or windows 10 setup
the problem may happen due to the tool we use to partition the HDD, not from microsoft or it is from windows 7 or XP, properly

The second working solution is to upgrade to an SSD but this is quite ridiculous
