I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone, first time poster
heres the abridged setup:
3.8ghz pentium 4
2.0ghz DDR 533
160GB maxtor SATAII/300

So i did a clean install of windows XP pro and it loads and formats perfect but once it is done copying files before it restarts to actually install xp i get the blue screen of death declaring the system had to shut down. after a restart loading from my HD will work and begin the xp boot screen the bar only gets so far and i get the blue screen yet again. ive read that the 300 speed doesnt work on some chipsets but any information would be a load of help! i also tried to use a jumper to force 150 transfer speeds but the same thing happens regardless.

A:Problem with Maxtor Sata II/300

This problem probably has nothing to do with the new hard drive or it's speed settings. Tear down your system to minimal hardware... like on-board video instead of a video card, no USB defvices attached, no NIC cards, one stick of memory and default bios settings.

Redo the Windows install and see if it completes and loads windows. You might need to install SATA drivers using F6 at the beginning of the Windows install

Hey guys, I really need some help. I have a Dell Dimension 5000 with two SATA hard drives in it. My No2 drive is 250GB. I recently bought a new Maxtor 500GB SATA II to replace the 250GB one. To transfer my data across I bought a IDE/SATA to USB adapter. I took the old 250GB drive out and put the new one in to format. Worked fine. I then put the 250GB drive back in and connected the 500GB with the adapter to transfer everything across. This worked fine too. But... When I put the new 500GB drive with all the data (its pure data, no system files) into the bay inside the computer and turn it on the BIOS reads NO drive at all. Not even my Boot No1 drive?!?! I've checked the Boot Sequence but all that says it that it can't find a hard drive. Someone said that my motherboard might not be compatable with a 500GB drive but it formatted fine? And I've checked the drives are working when switched on which they are. Could it be that somehow the new 500GB drive is now set up to be an external USB drive somehow since using the adapter???? I don't have much of a clue with this and am desperatly seeking help. Hope you can help! Please

I've just assembled a new pc with Maxtor SATA 200 GB Hardrive. My motherboard is Asus P5GDC-V Deluxe. For the first time after the assemble is finished, I put winXP pro (without SP1 and 2) and it boot but during the installation, the error message roported that some file is missing so my only option is to cancel the intallation.

Then, I read some FAQ on Maxtor website and download a boot up CD called MaxBlast 4 to format HD and create a partition. However, after that, when I boot my PC with winXP, the message "NTLDR is missing, press CTR+ALT+DEL to reboot"........I've tried so many times but the problem persists. How do I make this SATA HD to work.

(I've heard that Maxtor has problem when installing with SATA, and that I have to insert a floppy disk with SATA driver to proceed with the installation, is that true?? I don't know how to get that driver, please help
Thanks

A:Booting problem with Maxtor SATA HD

Ok, I see two problems.

1 You are using xp without sp1; you will not "See" the full size of the hd. You will only see 137 gig of the drive. The rest will be unallocated.

2 Your board uses an intel sata controller, however it is a newer model and I doubt that xp has native drivers for it. You need to load the driver during the first part of the install. When setup prompts you with "Hit F6" to load drivers, you must do so.

BTW I NEVER use the hd mfg's utility for installing a drive. There is a good chance it will install a drive overlay app. These cause all types of problems.

I just purchased a maxtor 300gig SATA drive. After installing it in my PC (secondary SATA). I booted the PC and installed MAXblast 3.6.1. It installed properly, but when I ran it I got the following error message:

"MaxBlast 3 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

AppName: maxblast3.exe AppVer: 1.0.1.0 ModName: odidev.dll
ModVer: 1.0.1.1 Offset: 00001444

All I am trying to do is format the drive to use to backup photos.

Any help would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks....

I was checking out this site and see a lot of knowledgeable people and wanted to check if anyone could help me out.

I'm building a new PC for my sister and ran into an issue.
Motherboard = P5P800 (775 socket)
CPU = Intel 540 (3.2 Gig)
Harddrive = 250 Gig Maxtor SATA w16mb
DVD = LG DVD 16X IDE

Everytime I plug the SATA drive in, the BIOS freezes. If I restart the system and hold the DEL button (immediately) it will boot up and then display an F1 for BIOS or F2 for Continus to error. The error says something about Overclocking failed although my Overclocking is set to Standard and not chosen. If I boot up and wait a second to press the DEL button the system will not let me continue and appears frozen (I've let it sit for 20 min with no error)

I did hold the DEL button and pressed continue and installed XP successfully, but I don't want to have to teach her how to press DEL follwed by F2 everytime she wants to turn the power on.

If I unplug the SATA HD, the PC will boot up without any errors and will load the XP CD in the Dvd Burner.

I've tried playing with the IDE config and it still doesn't do anything. I Currently have it set as following:
IDE Operate Mode = ENHANCED MODE
Enchanced Mode Support oN = SATA
IDE Detect Time Out = 35
I'm puzzled as to why I get an overclock error when I boot up with the SATA, and when I unplug it I get no errors. When I press DEL and F2 I can bootup fine as well?
Any Help would be greatly appreciated .

I strongly recommend you update to the latest BIOS on this motherboard as it addresses a few SATA problems.

You only need the latest BIOS and you should be able to use a bootable floppy to flash the BIOS or use the motherboard's own flash program to flash it.

Here's the latest BIOS: http://www.asus.com.tw/support/down...22&l3_id=4&m_id=1&f_name=P5P80006.zip~zaqwedc

Hi

I just installed XP on my new Dell XPS 410 because Vista is so bad (BSOD, numerous incompatibilities). To do it, I bought a new Maxtor 7H500F0 500GB SATA II drive (which seems to have a good reputation for performance) and installed an OEM XP SP2 on that. It got assigned the drive letter H: (C: is the bundled Vista) but apart from that it all seemed to go OK. It's certainly nice to have a relatively stable OS again!

BUT... the performance of the H: drive is truly terrible, especially under XP, where it's the boot drive. Even under Vista, where it's not the boot drive, it seems slower that the bundled WD 320GB drive, but not half as bad as it is under XP. When I access the C: drive from XP, the performance is just as good as when I access it from Vista.

Any activity on the H: drive seems to come with a LOT of track-seek noise, but even on the occasions when this isn't the case, data transfer speeds are still very low. As an example of the relative performance, a file copy that takes 11s on the C: (it's about 230MB, I think, but I'm not at that machine at the moment), take over a minute copying the same file from C: to H:.

As a control, I have an external 500GB IDE drive connected via USB. The same file copy from C: to the external drive is almost as quick as copying from C: to C:.

Hello everyone. I recently had some software conflicts on my computer. After spending many hours trying to figure out how to fix it I decided to reformat the hard drive. Heres the problem. My setup is an Gigabyte GA7n400 pro mobo. 2 Maxtor SATA 160 hard drives. I had everything working and had it working for about a year. I backed everything up to another pc on the network and decided to start the format. Put my xp disk in waited for it to ask if I needed to install third party SCSI or Raid drivers, when that time came I hit f6 it loaded the drivers then gave me the option to choose my raid controller. I chose it. After that it comes to a screen asking which hard drive I would like to install. Is it me or should it only list 1 hard drive since they are in a raid array. But it lists both separate. So then I decide to install on the first drive. After reboot it says cannot find OS.Is there a setting I'm overseeing or what? Please help!

A:Help installing XP on Maxtor SATA Raid1

When you cleaned your old drives off, did you create the Raid Array again, because if you did not, then it is not there.

Since you have cleaned everything off (including that raid array), I suggest you create the raid array, then try the OS and load the F6 drivers as you did previously and away you should go.

I am hoping that someone can help me before I "open window -> outsert computer"! =P Here is my delimma!

I purchased a Maxtor SATA drive, it's the Diamondmax 200gb 7200 8mb one.
I used to be a computer tech and still build and work on computers but I have *never* installed or dealt with an SATA! No matter what I do, I cannot get this thing working right to save my life. I am working with the Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939 board, which does have two onboard sata connectors. I will list the things I've tried and hopefully someone can see something I'm doing wrong or not doing.... I know that the drive *is* installed correctly, just to get that out of the way.

I ran the maxblast 4 cd and setup the drive for Winxp /w sp1+....everything went smooth there. I then started installing Winxp(Home) Upgrade. It let me get to the point right after you put your old Windows cd in to verify you have a copy then when it started to write to the drive it stated something to the effect that it could not alter the drive. Soooo....I decided to try to format the hard drive through the windows setup, thinking that perhaps the maxblast 4 cd had set it up wrong somehow and windows could not format the drive. Since that I have tried to reformat/setup the drive with the Maxblast4 cd and it has the drive listed under "unknown controller" and it has it listed as BIOS Drive (80 Hex) 203.9gb (NTFS), and it gives me errors saying "An error was encountered while partiti... Hey guys. New to the forums here, the old site I used to use seems to be dead, had not checked it for a long time. I would say about 6 or 7 months ago I purchsed a Maxtor 200GB DiamondMax 21 HD. I installed it as a secondary storage device to compliment my WD 160 IDIE HD. During install I went through the usual DVD drive missing bs blah blah blah and resolved all the issues. 3 days ago I fired up the computer and Windows froze just as the little "Windows XP" graphic appeard (but not totally bright). I restarted the computer to find that no Maxtor HD was listed in the bios. The computer stalled in the same place but after 40 to 70 sec started normally but still no maxtor HD. When i remove power from the Maxtor HD windows starts nomally. I have new SATA drivers and updated bios. Ive also moved from SATA 1 to SATA 2. What the hell could be causing this?!?! I dont want to loose my 180gigs of music!

Do you load the SATA drivers first before you install the HDD? Or check with your MOBO and load their RAID drivers and Utility program. I use Ultra 133 IDE Maxtor for the OS/Programs then SATA Maxtor 200GB. It's been running almost year now no problems..

Did you install any hardware changes lately? Okay I see then maybe the Maxtor has failed or something is wrong with the SATA controllers. How big is your PSU for you system? Any cables cracked or broken for the SATA connector or power?

I had initial problems with my sata drive, namely failure to format prior to windows xp installation (which resulted in me getting another IDE drive to this) to Windows XP failing to detect the drive in explorer. Ran Maxblast and formatted it from bootup - which incidentlaly i did when trying to install win xp i the first place but failed.

Anyways the problem i have now with the drive is this:

1) The drive access time appears slow
2) running mp3s or games off the hard drive stutters for 2-4 seconds - almost like its 'buffering'.
3) the drive disappears in windows when running Symantec's disk doctor
4) (this may be relevant to the drive or not) Windows takes 1-2 mins to bring the desktop up after the windows splash screen

All the drivers regarding sata have been installed from the motherboard CD. The drive is appearing as NTFS. It has an 8mb cache i believe and is 7200rpm with a 500w PSU in the case if that helps. Athlon 3000+ proc with gigabyte K8T890 motherboard

Any ideas how to get the drive working faster without stuttering? Im almost at the point of testing Newtons Law with this SATA drive and reverting to older, trusted IDE!

Thanks

I tried to figure this out on my own, but it seems I just don't have enough experience in this to figure this problem out. I'm getting to the breaking point so I figure I'll ask here first.

The 120g Maxtor drive is my old drive, but I bought a 250g SATA drive recently, and I installed it. I wanted to make it my boot drive, so I set up the partitions and set the BIOS to boot to that. I installed windows xp on the SATA and reconnected my Maxtor drive hoping to use it as a storage drive. Not to mention I needed my files. Well, I'm not sure where along the lines it screwed up, but it only shows one partition and its 30gigs, and its blank. The SATA drive seem to show up fine. (Both drives have two partitions).

I don't have the box for the Maxtor anymore, but in the drivers, it says Maxtor 6Y120P0. And the SATA drive is a Western Digital 250gig. If anyone can tell me how to recover my Maxtor drive and allow me to see all partitions properly, that would be great.

A:SATA/MAXTOR installation issue...

Sorry for the double post, but I have to add a second part.

I'm pretty sure the partition tables are screwed up. So I ask this, can setting the "Cap Limit" jumper setting accidently screw up the partition tables? If so, is there any free data/partition recovery program I can use? Note it needs to work on Maxtor HD's. Please, I need help.

Hey all, im having some issues with an Maxtor One Touch 4 500GB external hard drive i purchased. I bought it about 6 months ago, and it worked perfectly during that period. However i recently went overseas for a month and when i came back my computer was unable to recognise it as an external device.
The hard drive runs of usb and a power adaptor, and when i first turnoed on my machine and attempted to plug in my external hard drive, the computer froze, when i reset it failed to load with the hard drive still plugged in.
I removed it and everything worked perfectly, i once again tried to plug in the hard drive, and it attempted to reinstall the software on my computer, yet i was still unable to see or view the device through my computer or safely remove hardware.
With further attempts disconnecting and reconnecting the hard drive my computer would freeze and windows explorer would reset or close.

I was able to get my music data off of a friend, and all that remains on the hard drive are movies, and general copies of files on my computer, so i wasn't to worried about losing data.

Today i decided id attempt to play around with it again, and i read on several posts that the issue could have been caused by the casing of the external hard drive. I removed the hard drive from the case, and purchased a new SATA cable to connect to my motherboard. Yet when i attempted to turn on my PC with the hard drive connected via only this cable it came up with the message, "... Read more

Hi

I have an OEM Maxtor Diamondmax10 200gb hard drive which although appears to be fitted correctly doesnt get picked up by BIOS. Its a new system so theres no Windows on there. The Windows installer cant see the hard drive although a RAID utility sees it ok.

The HDD isnt used as a RAID. When i switched the SATA mode in BIOS from RAID to IDE both BIOS & the Windows XP installer detected it but Windows was unable to format the drive. Windows said the drive might be damaged?

If there is any third party software i need what is it? Is there any other software i need? Is there a bootable floppy i need?

I think setting the mode to IDE in BIOS looks right but i dont know where to go from there. Essentially i just need to get the drive detected and usable so i can get the OS on there...dont really need Raid or anything too fancy. Just a working hard drive

If anyone can help would appreciate it!

Thanks

It always puts it in the 2nd channel master in the bios start up no matter how I plug in the cables (or don't plug some in) and it calls it a removeable drive with the icon on the taskbar to safely remove this hardware. Also, it freezes after I go into windowsupdate.com and/or a couple minutes or so after loaded into windows. I've looked through the manual and it says it will take sata up to 3 gb/s (which this is) and I set the jumper to limit it to 1.5 since that's all the cable is good for.

HI, I have an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard on a self build HTPC. I have a Samsung IDE HDD which isrunning Visat 32 bit fine. I wish to install a Maxtor 6L150S 233GB HDD via a SATA connection. To speed the transfer of files from my main desktop pc onto this HTPC I installed the Maxtor into my Dell Dimension 5150 using the SATA connection. XP detected it and I copied all my movies, pics etc onto it. When I connect the Maxtor into the HTPC it is not detected in BIOS. I have enabled SATA in the BIOS but still no joy.

Please can a anyone help?

Graham B, welcome to TSG
What does device manager say?
any yellow or red problems?
I have the same board and I think i had problems at first and can not remember what I did Grrrr.
I know I had to change something in the BIOS and install the raid controller from the floppy that came with my motherboard.
So go explore the BIOS and see what you can find, enable any and all sata raid options, if that fails tell me what you did or didn't do and I will try and help

I have been trying to do this the entire day with no results.

I have:

Chaintech S1689 ULi Socket 939 ATX Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 Venice Processor
2 Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300GB 7200rpm 16MB SATA-150 OEM Hard Drives
2gig Corsair PC 3200 DDR Ram
Chaintech GeForce 6200 Video Card

I formatted the drives using the Maxtor MaxBlast4 boot CD, making them compatible for WinXP (without SP1).

When I attempted to load the drivers from the motherboard cd, I came up with a system boot failure. I copied the driver folder contents onto a floppy and tried again. No luck.

I booted from the WinXP cd and pressed "F6" to install drivers from manufactors disk. When prompted, I installed the SATA and ATA drivers that I was instructed to install from the manufactors read me notes.

It appeared as if all was well. Then it came up on "Windows XP Startup".

When I pressed the enter key, the following message displayed:

"Setup did not find any hard disc drives installed in your computer".

I checked and re-checked all of my cabling and connections. When the computer boots up, it shows the 2 drives on Channel 1 and 2.

I'm at a loss here.

Can anyone offer any assistance?

Thanks.

Yet when i attempted to turn on my PC with the hard drive connected via only this cable it came up with the message, "unable to rea... Read more

A:Maxtor/SATA hard drive issues

Some steps to consider:

Are you giving the hard drive power when connecting to your motherboard? You need to connect the Sata power cable to the drive. Simply plugging the sata data cable in isn't enough.
Are you disconnecting your other internal hard drive?
If the external HD is powered and the internal hard drive is connected, check BIOS for boot priority. It may be attempting to read from the external drive and when it fails to find boot data, you get that error.

Good luck

Just bought the MAXTOR SATA 300GB HDD w/16MB cache [6B300S0] and my BIOS will not detect it @ all!

MOBO: ASUS P4P800 Deluxe

I am already running [without any problems] a MAXTOR SATA 120GB hdd [6Y120M0] connected on SATA1 socket.

Attempt #1:Tried to plug in the 300GB drive to the SATA2 socket [as a 2nd drive].
Result #1: BIOS does not detect ANY drive, not even the original 120GB drive.

Attempt #2: Tried to plug in the 300GB drive on its' own instead of the 120GB drive to SATA1 socket.
Result #2: Could not even enter BIOS setup, PC froze after memory count.

Furthermore, I even held the drive in my hand with only the power cable hooked up to it, fired up the machine and felt it spinning, so I doubt it's a power issue. Tested the SATA data cable with the original drive and works fine.

I also updated the BIOS to the latest version to no avail.

MAXTOR told me to try their POWERMAX software on the drive, I don't know how it will detect it but will give it a go.

Open to suggestions.

Cheers.

A:MAXTOR SATA 300GB HD not recognized by BIOS...

I've had to use the powermax software to install maxtor drives before.

Also, you may want to make sure that the primary device on the sata channel is set to auto in the bios. If it has previous, or no drive detection information it may not autodetect.

I am trying to get windows xp installed on my new system but it keeps telling me that it can't find a hard drive on my system. I have used the motherboard cd to make a sata driver disk and I have pressed F6 at the beginning of the XP cd loading. I have chosen the WINXP Promise driver, it loads it I press enter then I press enter again to install windows and it says that there is NO HARD DRIVE. WHAT THE CRAP! Can someone give me some help. I have 4 serial ata ports on the motherboard. 2 of which have "pri sata" & "sec sata" written. The other 2 have "sata1" & "sata2" written. Is there a certain one that I should plug into? HELP! Should I use the power adapter for the SATA DRIVE or just the regular power cable? ANY help would be great thanks!

With SATA, there are 2 POST's. First is BIOS. 2nd is SATA. Enter the 2nd by pressing a key. Refer to manual. Add the new drive there. Save and reboot.

I have a maxtor hard drive SATA 200GB as my main drive and a second drive D.
Very recently when I have noticed that my computer took longer to boot into windows. Applications seem to take a bit longer than usual to load.
I have XP SP2 installed. I defragment my drive every few weeks so its not a defragment problem however when I try to defrag it now, it takes many times longer to do so.
Also for a scan disk of C: (chkdsk on boot) it took 6 hours to get to about 25%. So there must be a problem. I can hear the hard drive loading sound for a few seconds and then there is a very long pause maybe about 10-20 minutes. It should only take a few hours the last time i did it maybe about 5 hours. Something is wrong.

When I transfer a large file like 1gb into my drive D it takes 15 minutes. Which is a bit long for a SATA enabled hard drive. I have had this drive for about 2 years now and it has never gone this slow before.

I have downloaded the seatools from the maxtor website which diagnoses the drive. The tool ran slow but my hard drive passed the tests.

Also when I ran that scan disk, it did say there was a mirror copy of something and also some other things. I think it had the word security in it so it deleted somethings. It mentioned indexes and some files.
I forgot most of it.

I have checked my D drive and it is running fine and unaffected.
Also I noticed during bootup that on the windows logo screen, the one with the bar moving from left to right that it freezes for about 5 ... Read more

the drive is a maxtor ultra sata, and i used the maxtor sata/150 pci card to connect the drive.

any suggestions on what went wrong?

i uninstalled norton ghost and also reformatted the new maxtor drive, but the computer is still slow when it is connected. when i disconnect the drive, my computer runs fine.

Hi and welcome. Clicking sounds and hard drives are always bad news.

You might download the drive diagnostics from Maxtor's website, if you didn't get a floppy or cdrom with the drive. Test the drive and see what error reports pop up.

Hi all!

My 30gb Maxtor is acting funny for a few days now. At times I’ll get a balloon popup in the system tray saying, “New Hardware Found” and the name of it is “Laxtnr” I go into device manager and sure enough Maxtor is now Laxtnr! At times it’s accessible under that name and other times it’s not. I uninstall the Laxtnr drive and then search for hardware changes and then Laxtnr will now become Maxtor! I ran SeaTools and it passed all tests so what the heck?

I am having problems installing my maxtor 10g hard drive. BIOS detects all of the devices properly but windows will not display the new drive that I have installed. I think I have installed all of the devices properly:

Primary Master : 3.2g HDD Seagate
Primary Slave : 10g HDD Maxtor (New)
Secondary Master: 8.2g HDD
Secondary Slave : 52x Creative Infra CDROM

These are set up properly with the pins in the right places, on the right places on the ribbons and I have run the diagnostics program that was downloadable from the maxtor website and it said that the drive was fine. Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks in advance,

What version of Windows are you using? How did you partition the drive and what drive letter or letters are assigned to it and your other drives?

Hello people.................my nieghbours comp has problem.......on boot up:
"Windows cannot find hal.dll" Ive seen and sorted this before by slaving the drive to another machine and copying the missing or corrupt file over.....problem is when I try that, the drive is recognised at the boot sequence.....in Device manager and disk management but not in "My Computer",its not assigned a drive letter and the option to change the letter in Device manager is not there.Ive also tred "Boot Magic" but I cant seem to get anywhere.
Drive is XP and he has "GoBack" drive managment installed, which is maybe the reason for the thing not being initialized.

Im sure this is an easy one for someone who`s hit this before.

TIA

A:Maxtor HDD problem!

Yes, the whole problem is the fact the drive has GoBack on it. You will need to install GoBack on your machine in order to access his drive.

Hi there,
Im having problems with an old Maxtor Fireball 3 40GB hard drive that all of the sudden became unreadable by the computer. The BIOS identifies the drive, but using a custom factory name for the drive.

The problem is i need to recover files from the disk. After some searching, i found that the problem is most likely firmware related and thus i need to update the firmware or some boot records.

Does anyone know how to do this and where to get the firmware needed?

Hi all - just bought a second-hand PC, wanting to install a new OS from CD. Changed the boot order from '1st - HDD, 2nd - nothing, 3rd - nothing' to '1st - floppy, 2nd - CD/DVD, 3rd - HDD'. Popped in the CD, rebooted and left it to go - not noticing the floppy in the drive... turned out to be a boot floppy to flash the Maxtor firmware. I now have a PC that can't see the (only) HDD installed, although the BIOS seems to see it as a 'Maxtor SABRE' but won't boot from it. I've subsequently seen other support forums referring to problems with these disks and certain motherboards, the usual solution being to flash the disk firmware and / or motherboard BIOS, however I can't seem to find anything specific to my new setup (below). My questions are has anyone had a similar experience, how did you resolve it, where can I get updated firmware for the HDD (not the Maxtor website it seems), or just any help / guidance really...

I recently installed a new Maxtor 6E040L0 40 Gig hard drive to replace a Western Digital drive that failed. Nothing else has changed. Now when the system boots up, there is about a minute pause after the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load. This did not happen with the WD drive. I don't believe the Maxtor drive to be defective because otherwise it works fine. Anyone have any ideas as to what might be going on and how to correct it? Maxtor tech support was of no help.
Thanks.
