Word 2003 - 'Check Spelling as you type' no longer works correctly

Q: Word 2003 - 'Check Spelling as you type' no longer works correctly

Hi all,

Earlier this year "Check Spelling as you type" in Word 2003 worked fine. Now it does not and the red wavy line does not appear under wrongly spelled words. (unless I click Spelling and Grammar first).

I have tried every suggestion on this web page with no luck.
The registry item named '1' mentioned in the article was missing.

It's a real mystery as the 'check spelling as you type' still works in PowerPoint and also in Windows Live Mail.

I can reactivate 'check spelling as you type' in a document If I choose to run a spell check via the 'Spelling and Grammar' icon on the toolbar or from the 'tools' menu item. Only then does 'check spelling as you type' begin working again for the current document.

I tried a system restore to June which is our earliest restore point for 2014. (I have restore points for 2012 but inexplicably none for 2013. I'd rather avoid going that far back in time)

I re-installed Microsoft Office 2003

any other ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You have have tried everything I would have. Unfortunately Microsoft no longer supports Office 2003 products. So you're not going to get much help from them. Office 2003 support ended the same time that XP support ended.http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/support-has-ended-for-office-2003-HA103306332.aspx

Hi,

I'm having problems with Word 2003 on Windows XP. As far as I know, I haven't changed anything, but when I came to insert a symbol in a document yesterday, nothing happened. Then, this morning, I've found that I can't drag and drop within Word documents either. I've done a virus check and nothing has come up, so I can;t think what's gone wrong.

I've tried running winword.exe/a, which brings up a new Word document without any of my customized settings but with the ability to insert symbols etc. However, if I then try and open my current document using that, the problem returns. Likewise, if I save the new Word document and customize the settings, switch off the computer and restart, I still have problems when opening old files. I've also tried deleting normal. dot and creating a new one using the winword.exe /a file, but it still reverts when I restart the computer.

Is there any way to restore this to normal because it's driving me mad!

Many thanks!

I have received some complaints that the spelling check for Windows 10 does not work within most webforms and/or internal websites. While I am typing this message I can see squigly lines for nearly each word since my native language is Dutch and this message
is in English. This same effect does not work for all forms or fields. Sometimes it will give a squigly line but it won't offer any alternative options. It looks lik the type of field detemines if the spelling check works or not.

In the past we had an add-in for Internet Explorer called Spelling Check which was a lot more reliable. Since it is no longer available we don't know how to offer the same functionality for all forms and websites.
Please let me know if there is anything that can be done to improve this.
The current spelling check built into Windows 10 itself only seems to check certain field types. For example the field I am typing in right now seems to be working just fine, highlighting errors and making suggestions. Other websites however this feature
does not seem to work. It looks like there is a differentiation between field types.
Some of our web applications/sites no longer have a spelling check now which is a hassle for our users. Are there any known restrictions to the field types that are checked?

I have also posted this question in the Windows 10 forum because I am unsure if this should be something posted there since the issue is with the new Windows 10 spelling check however it is relate... Read more

On my old computer, it was the first choice on the tools pull down menu and it was a spelling and grammer check. On here now is only the grammmer check. It does show abc with a check mark next to the word grammer, but it doesn't correct spelling.

We are using Microsoft Word 2003. When running a spell check the word pubic is not flagged as being misspelled (I know it's not misspelled).

However we would like to flag it as misspelled as too many people are leaving the letter L out of the word Public and not catching it before they send out documents.

I know how to edit the Custom.dic but how do I edit the built in dictionary.

Thanks

A:How to remove a correctly spelled word from Word 2003 regular dictionary

I am assuming that pubic is not a word you would use in correspondence- in which case you could use "AutoCorrect" to correct.

Tools> Autocorrect--- then give the word you don't want used and the substitute word you do want used.

If there is a time you need to use that word, you can turn off AutoCorrect when the document is finished and manually make the correction before sending it out.

I have an old version of Word (2000), so I am presuming that MS has not chaned the name of this feature.

When I try to open my 2013 Word from my Office 2013, NOTHING happens any more.  Everything else works fine - Excel, Powerpoint, etc.  I have uninstalled/reinstalled several times; a MS tech person has tried to fix problem, but could not fix it and said they will charge me $70 to fix.  Do you have any idea what the problem could be??  I really need help here!!

A:MS Word 2013 no longer works

The only suggestion I would have is using something like Revo Uninstaller (the free version or trial version - either will be fine) or similar to uninstall MS-Office 2013 and then reinstall it again.

Revo removes everything associated with a program, leaving no traces behind.

If that does not solve the problem then I'm stuck as a fresh, completely fresh, install should install all Office programs in working order.  I suspect that the standard uninstall leaves some bits behind and that corruption in one of those bits is at the root of your problem.

As another quick suggestion search your machine for the file "winword.exe" and try starting directly from it.  If that works then somehow your shortcut is hosed.

Hi there

I am using Access 2003 and have 200 clients I am adding field names and data types at present to set-up a database and want later on to be able to use the sub-form in forms to up-load each individuals personal word .doc CV to there personal sub-form record. Do I set this early on in data type or field properties or use OLE to look up there record on the server depending on the clients name or automated client number? If so how exactly can I do this if it can be done. I only have basic college knowledge of Access so do not know any programming. I realise this can be done in Excel but my boss wants if possible to have the information at hand in a sub-form personal record ready possibly by accessing it via a control button so once clicked the CV will appear for that client and every client once viewing their record details.

Thank you

The problem is that we can't seem to be able to run a spell check on the document whilst it is locked. Is this unavoidable or is there some way around it? The person who created the document is new to macros so she has not guaranteed that she hasn't done something wrong when creating it.

Recently I have had to remove the SysProtect pop up/Vundo Virus...everything seemed fine.
Then as I was spell checking a letter in Microsoft Word 2003, it kept saying I had spelled several words wrong that I knew were correct. (I'm not a great speller, but I know how to spell "available")
Upon closer inspection I see the spell check is checking in FRENCH?
I can find a way to change it. I'm thinking it's a side effect of my recent virus woes.

I'm open to suggestion here.

A:MS Office Word 2003 Spell Check FRENCH???

There are two things you could Try. Open Word, go to Tools, Language, Set Language and make sure French isn't chosen.
Also click on start. all programs, Microsoft Office Tools, Microsoft Office Language Setting. Make sure your default version is set to English. We had a problem recently with Asian Typography being installed. We found once we removed all Asian languages from the Enabled Language window it solved our problem. Possibly you might need to remove French from there if it is showing up?
Hope this helps.

On following as best I could the above cryptic instructions, I found to my horror that parts of my document had been deleted. I have tried to activate the spelling check through Spelling & Grammar tab on Tools Options but without any success. I have looked at the custom dictionary. It is the same as the one I have used for years without trouble when I was running the predecessor to MS Word 97 SR-1. A:WLM spelling check language problem

Hi Highdetailz, welcome to 7F!

If I understand you correctly, you don't have French listed in the choice of languages box as shown in this example, correct?

Source Step #4: Windows Live Mail 2011: Add a second language to the Spell checking feature | a Tech-Recipes Tutorial

If so I may have found a way to add it. There are also two other choices you can try.

1. Run a SFC /scannow to repair any corrupt files, then check to see if WLM has the French listing back. If that doesn't work:

2. Repair WLM: In your Start menu search box, type wlarp , and click the application highlighted in the results list. Answer yes to the UAC prompt.

This brings up the dialog window to repair or uninstall. Select Repair all Windows Essentials programs. WLM is part of Windows Essentials so you have to make that choice. When the repair is finished check to see if you have French listed.

   Note
wlarp stands for Windows Live Automatic Repair Program.
If all that doesn't bring France back, the third way is more complicated, from a thread on the MS community Forum, top of page 2:

Sorry if this isn't the right category. Is there a way in Word to flip letters of a mispelled word. Example, "thier," flipping the i and e. I remember being able to do it in some program, but that was umpteen years ago and probably not a Microsoft product.

A:Spelling Errors in Word

I don't quite understand your question, but this'll probably work for you:

If you keep typing beleive instead of believe, you can hit Tools-Autocorrect and on the Autocorrect tab, make an entry that replaces "beleive" with "believe". It'll automatically fix that for you.

If the word is a real word both ways, then do a find/replace (ctrl-h) and type the wrong word in the Find box and the right word in the Replace box. Hit Find, let it find it and decide whether you want to replace or skip that instance until you've checked all instances of that word.

I'm not sure how swapping the i/e would be any easier than either of those tools.

WIN 7 64bits
multi-users account, one and only one account has admin rights

I've installed the MS-Proofing Tools 2000 for MS-Word 2000 under the admin account without any error msg.

When I try to spell/grammar check in some installed languages (i.e. German) I get

"Word cannot open the spelling file c:\programs files(x86)\common files\Microsoft Shared\Proof\MSSP3GEp.lex for German(Germany)"

I tried to apply
Help and Support - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3054921
but:
I do not see in registry "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\Spelling\1033\Normal"

I see "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\"

Thanks for helping.

I went to do some homework this afternoon and Spell and Grammer Check is not working in Microsoft Word. The little paper clip guy comes up and says MS Word could not find mssp232.dll or MSSpell3.dll then when you hit ok it says MS Word could not find msgr???.dll. If someone could help me fix this I would appreaciate it greatly.

I am using MS Office 2007. I face some problem with MS Word. When I write a word with wrong spelling, MS Word can not detect it and does not show any red/green underline on the word. When I want to check the spelling and grammer by pressing F7, it does not show me any spelling or grammer related error, but there have some error. I already uninstall and install it a few times but still I face the same problem. How can I fix it?

word cannot find the spelling file MSSpell3.dll or mssp232.dll for

Can anyone help me with this...

Win 7 has lost the spellcheck files for Office XP. Do they usually just disappear??

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the full program - but WIN7 still can't find the files. Aren't they on the program disc??

So why won't win 7 install them?

MSN don't have ANY suitable answer, or resolution, (or the files!)

BTW - I suggest win 7 is not fully uninstalling the program, (?) because when I reinstall, all my chosen defaults are still there. This does not happen with other software, where all setting are wiped and program defaults reinstated.

There is also MIcrosoft Office Starter 2012 which may be interferring or in conflict? although I haven't activated this program because I don't want the pre-packaged advertising bundle.

Can anyone advise me on a proper UNINSTALL or how to get back the MS Spellcheck files?

Thank you for your help

Howdy all,
Everytime I try to spellcheck a document, I get this MS Word popup:

Word cannot open the spelling file c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof\MSsp3en.lex for English (Ireland).Click to expand...
but then it performs a spellcheck using English (Ireland). What it doesn't do is allow me to add words. Is there any way that I can fix this?
BTW, I have searched MS Technet, and the fixes provided for in Q211188 - WD2000: Add Button Unavailable in the Spelling Dialog Box were not applicable.
Thanx for any and all assistance.

In Live Mail I work with up to 3 different languages.
I understand that the spelling check detects which laguage is used and automatically starts checking accordingly.
Some image of the spelling check menu I have seen on the net did show a "current laguage" button in the spelling check menu.
However in the menu on my computer ( Dutch version) this button is not there.
I appreciate suggestions

I have a box (in WLM 2009) that can be checked called "check spelling in current input language". Is that the one? I'm not sure what it does since my spelling is checked even if that box is unchecked but maybe it refers to the case where multiple languages are installed.
