Harddrive didnt respond within timeout period

Q: Harddrive didnt respond within timeout period

Lately ive been having some serious issues with my comp every program would hang up for 10 seconds then start up again, this would occur every 30 seconds or so. So I ended up reinstalling my win2k on my comp hoping this might fix any software problems that might be causing this. To my dismay the problem still persists, after checking event log ive found constant patterns of

Warning:An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 during a paging operation.
Error:The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period.
Warning:An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 during a paging operation.
Error:The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period.

over and over again. If anyone can tell me what the possible problems may be that would help me alot. And also any kinda program to narrow down the possible problems would also be alot of help.

Preferred Solution: Harddrive didnt respond within timeout period

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Dell Latitude CPiA 366 laptop that intermittently freezes or blue screens. I updated the system BIOS and ran scandisk. The machine is currently stable but I am noticing the following system event viewer error which keeps reoccuring:

"the device, \device\ide\ideport0, did not respond within the timeout period"

This is Event ID 9, Source Atapi.

Micro$oft has an article in its' knowledge base regarding this which point to outdated hardware or firmware. Is the hard drive going bad on this machine? Please advise.

A:\device\ide\ideport0 did not respond within the timeout period

It could be. This error sometimes appears when a drive or controller is having problems.

Try getting a diagnostic program that has drive testing.

Hi, I use Windows XP Pro and I am getting this error message in the system event log everytime I log in. Now I only get one, but just recently there are like 3 or 4 in a row many times during the initial log in to the internet network.

I have tried to search everywhere and google and yahoo for an answer but never was able to get a clear solution.

Luckily, I am able to get online just fine but the idea of this showing up constantly bothers me. It was fine, for about 4 months it stopped showing up after I did no changes to my system but its now back.

Also for a while I was getting something about user cancelled something but I have not seen that in a long time.

I tried to unplug the modem and cables to reset the IP , but that doesnt help. Also not that my service uses a Dynamic IP and I cant switch to static IP.

Hi everyone. I live in Southern Indiana and I am looking for an ISP that has no timeout period. I ask because I often leave my computer online for extended periods of time due to the fact that I sometimes download large files like after I format the computer and need to download all of the critical updates, norton updates, game updates, etc etc etc. Anyway, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Some websites that list ISPs would be nice too but I already know of some websites that list ISPs. Preferably an ISP $15.00 or less is what I am looking for.

hello again...

dang this thing is a pain!!

new issue today, trying to save a tiny .rtf file to external USB drive, and get "semaphore timeout period has expired" message and have to save to local drive instead. also get the message if i drag and drop into the desired location.

perhaps related to the issue i occasionally have: the machine loses connection to the external drive and either the folder shows empty (it's not!) or doesn't show as even being connected. little blue light on the drive will sometimes go out, sometimes not, but still no access...

EDIT: i have two verbatim USB drive attached... one or the other of them will occasional disappear from This PC and when i look at device manager there is an error on that drive. i disconnect and reconnect and the drives show up and the error in device manger goes away... there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why this happens. when it does and i try to save something to the drive, that's when i get the "semaphore timeout period has expired"

i have tried to update drivers using windows search online and it always says i have the best drivers loaded....

the drives have been checked for errors and windows reports none... there is still quite a bit of available space on them (80+ gigs on each) and when they are connected and live, i can access files with no problem... it just decides to seemingly drop the drive randomly...

thanks for any help...

When deleting a file from a local drive, that I have permissions to the local folder on, I'm getting the Semaphore timeout period has expired error.

I've tried to make it as simple as possible for the system, after doing a clean boot, and it still failing, I'm currently in safe mode, without networking, and am still seeing the error.  Anybody have a suggestion or work around?  Files in other
folders are not having this issue.

I maintain some software that makes a tcp socket connection to a different piece of software and sends data back and forth (pretty basic stuff there). We use boost asio to handle reading and writing of data over the socket connection. We have a client that
has deployed this software on Windows7. The client has been having issues with our software not being able to maintain a reliable socket connection. One thing I have noticed is that quite often the networking callback are receiving the error: The semaphore
timeout period has expired.

This error is not coming from anywhere in our code (or the boost code). I've done some research on it and I found a Microsoft Knowledge base article on this error for Windows XP (support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/325487). I've seen a few people ask questions about
this error on Windows7, but they're all in regards to moving files to different drives, nothing regarding network connections.

What does this error mean in regards to Windows7? Does the knowledge base article I mentioned still apply to Windows7?

So I did a search and found nothing definitive regarding this particular error in my application.

I have a Dell laptop with an i7 processor, an SSD drive and 8g of ram, running Win7 Pro 64 bit.

I put a 128G micro sd card into the sd card adapter and slapped into the slot. When I try to move files to the card, I get the error.

I formatted the card just for grins. It won't format NTFS, but it did format exFat @ default allocation unit size.

The only file that didn't copy was one that's 21 megs in size. Everything else was smaller and copied over fine.

Donno what to do from here. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Error 0x80070079: The semaphore timeout period has expired

Hello Ady,
Thanks for your post!
This issue may be a little complex and require some steps to troubleshoot:
1.    Update the driver of wireless network adapters in both of your computers.
2.    Temporarily disable all the firewalls and anti-virus applications, then check the issue again.
3.    To exclude the factors from other services and applications, do a clean boot to check the issue and perform Step 4.(KB929135) How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vistahttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;929135
4.    With clean boot, try to apply the hotfixes contained in the following KB articles:(KB932045) Error message when you use a network connection to copy a large file from one Windows Vista-based computer to another Windows Vista-based computer: "The connection has been lost"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932045(KB932063) Several problems occur on a Windows Vista-based computer when you work in a wireless network environment
If problem still persists after steps above, this issue is very possibly due to network devices or configurations, please let me know:
1.    Whether this problem occurs in wired network?
2.    If strengthening the network signals, the problem can be changed?
3.    What size of files will lead to this error.
4.    Does this error terminate the copy process?

My environment is: Win'7, Visual Studio 2010, C#

There is another message on these forums with almost exactly the same title. It's closed, so I couldn't post there.

I'm getting that exact same response from Win'7 in a try /catch scheme.

i.e., "...The semaphore timeout period has expired..."

I am quite confident that the serial port is really there, as he will open and will transfer data from time to time.

It's the whims of the hardware that have me so confused.

The exact same code worked perfectly last night. In fact, it has worked for weeks.

The statement which I believe is causing the error is...

Much like the other thread mentioned, the port is a BlueTooth connector, and Win'7 is reporting him okay, and so on.

I welcome responses from those with useful knowledge on this topic.

This can happen when the total path length of the source file

Hello, randomly my main disk goes to 100% usage and either
1 Stops the system responding for 10-30 seconds
2 Refuses to let me switch programs without a freeze

This 100% usage occurs for 10-30 seconds. This issue started occuring 4 days ago and has happened 5 times. This issue has also happened on Windows 10

I have looked in the event logs and found this
Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued. As well as Reset to device, \Device\ACHIPort0, was issued.

A:Harddrive randomly goes to 100% and system doesn't respond

Open a Command Prompt (it is at Programs>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt) right click on it and select "run as administrator" then type in "Chkdsk C: /f /r" (without the quotes). This will scan the hard disk for errors and try to relocate any data on bad sectors.

I work at a Community College, outside of my job title, I also work on computers. There are 23 computers and the image I created was 13 GB in size(Windows XP, Microsoft Office, Adobe CS4 Master Collection, e.t.c.). After 2 hrs of formatting and installing software(all besides Office and CS4), I went to Cnet and downloaded Windows Key Code Viewer, because I was curious about the product key, if it was different from each machine. When I compared it on each machine that I used the dell disc on, the product was the same, even though I used different discs. I'm assuming that this image includes drivers for a given system, I believe that's Dell's habit.

Hello Everyone,
I have an on going ATA deployment, where the customer wants to know, the possibility of having the logs / event retained for 1 year and an approximate idea on the impact of storage and any limitations for MongoDB.
As per the ATA sizing tool and article the requirement of ATA center falls in the below specification.

Packets per second from all DCs

CPU (cores*)

Memory (GB)

Database storage per day (GB)

Database storage per month (GB)

2,000 (2,500)

So we have a approx. storage requirement of 3.6 TB per month, so how long are the logs/event on ATA center kept by default and can we change the retention period for the same.
Thank you,

hi all,

well, ive a weired prob., its all about strange ping replies we got from any

clients linked with 3 dlink switches and one Thomson 500 adsl router..
pinging to any domain would result in this very weired behaviour..
btw: we didnt expirienced this b4 imean this's a new thing we're facing,
and sometimes the replies come so normal..

any clues?? can it be the dsl provider itself??

A:wiered pings! 300ms..timeout..300ms..timeout!!

Somewhere between you and about 1 packet in 6 is being lost or delayed beyond ping's threshold. Maybe the destination site is busy, maybe your ISP is busy, maybe general network congestion. Not desirable, but not so weired either.

My Dell Vostro 1400 Laptop recently quit working. Its only 4 months old.

"Windows dould not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

I inserted the setup disc and booted from it, when I got the the Repair option it says,"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue."

So I took the computer down to the local computer store and they put in a new 130 GB harddrive, ran the setup disk again and it displayed the same missing HDD message.

Anyone have any Ideas of what could be wrong???

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

Now it runs fine, but I get bluescreens after random amounts of time, with errors involving a windows file. Unfortunately, I don't have the bluescreen error details at the moment. I have however uploaded the 3 minidumps from the 3 occasions.

Now i am thinking long term.. i am considering purchasing a "network harddrive", one that is between 500gigz to 1tb. There is a smaller/more affordable Seagate external drive.. but it is not a "network harddrive".. it has 1.5tb.. versus a network drive that is about 2tb but it cost about 314.

My question is, thinking long term.. and considering the setup i have.. which is a regular PC acting as a server.. what should i get?

Your suggestions are appreciated

A:Repair Man Did Something i didnt want him to do Help!!!

Call him up and talk to him about it. Presumably he installed using an "upgrade CD". You will need a full install CD to do a clean install, unless you really know what you are doing and have both the old ME disk AND the upgrade XP disk.

If you didn't make it clear to him that you wanted a "clean install", you will probably be charged again -- but it may depend on his mood.

The notion that Windows users might be the targets of hacker attacks is nothing new, given the platform's vast market domination and the sheer number of Windows-based desktops and servers. But a mysterious new type of attack has security watchdogs and Microsoft itself baffled this week; the company has issued a security warning that appears to offer little help in fending off the attack. As is often the case, this latest problem involves a Denial of Service (DoS) attack but is interesting because it also lets attackers insert code in PCs; the attackers can later use this code to compromise security. As a result, victims often can't log on to their own systems.

According to Microsoft's security bulletin about this problem (see the first URL below), the attack injects the following files on compromised systems: seced.bat, which can change the system's security policies, and cg.bat, which can attempt to connect as an administrator to other servers on the network. "As of August 2002, the PSS Security Team has not been able to determine the technique that is being used to gain access to the computer," the company writes in its bulletin. "However, because of the significant spike in activity, the PSS Security Team has determined that these techniques are similar and/or automated in some cases. Fully patched computers that follow security best practices provide the best protection from hacking or other malicious software.&q... Read more

A:as if we didnt know this would hppen...a.k.a Yet another one..

I smell a M$ ploy! Iddinit coincidental that M$ has their new SP1 for WinXP that everyother update will build off of and then a mysterious hole that allows full uninhibitable access to your computer pops up and M$ has no clue what's going on.....

they are going to let it scare the living crap out of the average user for about 2-3 weeks and then magically have a perfect plug for the problem but it will only be available with the latest update to your M$ O$.... planned obsolescence at it's finest if I've ever been paranoid and dilusional, which I probably am.

I was wondering would i void my warranty in any way IF, i was to put 32-bit version of windows Vista on my laptop, Already knowing i can use the same cdkey with the 32-bit version, would it be against the policy or anything!?!? 64-bit isnt for me, it crashes and freezes too much. Is the T9600 Useable with 32-bit architecture??! I hope so...

A:I am Wondering, Didnt know where to put this

Best thing to do would be to goto your manufacturer's site and ask them. Most larger manufacturers have the live support chat now, so request a chat, grab a can of pepsi, & wait for a tech. If not, they should have a # you can call & sit on hold all day.

A:didnt happen before, went away and now like this

Sounds like your 'puter is busy doing something else. Press ctrl-alt-del and look at CPU usage at the bottom. If its 100% have a look at the Processes tab and see whats using the CPU. Maybe you can end the process or maybe just rebooting will make it go away.

so i got onto my computer, and i noticed some of my desktop icons were gone. i also had a weird "windows 7 recovery" icon on my desktop as well. after a few seconds of confusion, it opened itself and started to "scan" my computer and said it was fixing the problem. i wouldnt let me X out of it or minimize it, so i knew something was wrong. i ran malwarebytes, and it found something and i delted it, and figured after i restarted it it would be fine. but i was wrong.

after the restart, everything was gone from my desktop but malwarebytes and microsoft offrice, and ALL of my files, folders, muusic, pictures, videos, EVERYTGING, was gone!! but, when i go to the search menu under my documents, everything comes up. and when i go to microsoft office and go to my recent documents, i am able to pull things up.

so i re-ran my malwarebytes, and it found about 6 new items, and it said it delted them. now, it appears to be virus free, and yet i still cannot see any of my files or folders on my desktop, nor in my "documents" folder. but i am able to search for them!!

i am now downloading AVG and i have malwarebytes still on my computer.

whaaat happened?!!? thank you:/

So the other (when I wans't at home) symantec did a scan, found 15-25 trojan malscripts. When I got home, 80% of icons on my desktop were gone and anything I did before I shut it down did not save.

Even though Symantec said they got rid of everything I have a feeling they didn't. I have a log report from symantec but unfortunately I can't upload files on this froum.

However I have found similar virus names, but under different types on this forum.

The file names follow the following pattern DWHFEA2.tmp.

Regardless I need some more advice. I currently have vista professional.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This afternoon i tried connecting two sata drives, one seagate drive and the second a Fujitsu laptop drive that i was going to back up, i checked the install HD was the first drive but when I booted windows a message displayed that a change on hardware generated an error.

I selected the first option and after that windows boot locks up at Starting Windows.

when i restar there is an option to run the repair program but that does not help at all

Anyone knows what could have been the problem?

originally i had one sata drive and one IDE drive plus two DVD/CD units, then i only left the two sata drives when this error appeared.

I tried leaving everything back to normal but that did not worked.

My Motherboard is kinda old its a Via P4M900MW-L made by MSi

A:Win 7 didnt like two SATA HD at once

hmm looks like this happened because of a memory stick/slot dying

A:What u deletd didnt go into recycling bin

You can set Windows to delete off the disk instead of using the Recycle Bin. Someone might have enabled that feature. Also, if you use Shift+Delete it bypasses the Recycle Bin in the same manner.
