Internet but no server access

Q: Internet but no server access

I've been dealing with this problem at a client's that's driving me batty. They had Fios installed and the installation guys did something to the wired internal network that screwed it up. Everyone now gets internet but nobody's machine can see the server.

I can ping the server but no icon shows up on any screen. The server gets internet as well. What am I missing here? It's a Windows server, 2008 or 12 I think. I'm a bit unsure of what version of server because I haven't been there in over a year, until last week so I think that's what it is.

Oh anmd it's not a domain but a workgroup since there are only 4 users hooked up.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My laptop connects to the local network, but it has no internet access.
If I run troubleshooting it says that the DNS server isn't responding.
It is not the internets fault, because my room mate net works fine. It's not the cables fault because I tried plugging it in both of my routers and in both of my room mates, using his cable. And it doesn't work.
Wifi works fine elsewhere, but I don't have a wifi router in my dorm.
Things that I've tried:
Flushing my DNS
Adding custom DNS ports, like Googles or OpenDNS
Resetting the laptop to previous restore points
Using winsock reset
Disabling/enabling the network
Disabling Avast

I've changed nothing on my computer. The net worked fine on tuesday in my dorm. I went home and it worked fine there. Yesterday I came back to my dorm and it just stopped.

Try typing 74.125.21.102 in a browser window to see if you can reach Google. Check your roommates DSN settings and see if he is using the same DNS servers.

How about a point in the right direction?

Say I have a client with several offices in diffent locations and they want to share files.

I was going to setup a server in one office and then let the other offices access shared folders on the server via the internet if possible. What would be the best/easiest way to do this? Or what should I go research and learn about?

I was curious if maybe different os's were preferred like server 2003 for the server and then xp for the workstations?

Someone told me that I should not use 2003 and stay with server 2000 as it was more stable?

Thanks,
George

Dear Friends,

I have compaq presario notebook laptop of V3500 series (Model: V3611AU). It has AMD 2 64X processor, 2.5 GB RAM, 1.86 clock speed.

Recently I upgraded Windows Vista ultimate to Windows 7 ultimate. For Vista I was using 400 KB wired telephone cable internet connection. I also upgraded the internet to optical internet connection with 8-10 MBPS download speed.

After installation of Windows 7 ultimate, the internet worked for 4 days nicely. Since, it was good internet speed, i was doing windows update daily. Meanwhile I stuck with windows sound problem (conexant high definition). I resolved this problem somehow.

I tried to figure out what could be the problem for my internet. To know this, i did what has been discussed on net like ipconfig /flushdns; ipconfig /release; ipconfig /all; ipconfig /renew etc etc....kind of things. But none of them worked for me.

Then I checked whether there is some problem with my hardware. So i used previous telephone wired cable. Internet works fine with that cable. But when I connect optical cable, it shows "Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding" after troubleshooting diagnosis.

I also checked whether the optical cable internet is working or not. For that I used my friend's laptop (running windows XP) to connect to internet using optical cable. It works fine with another laptop. I got fade up with the new problems of Windows 7.

My setup is well wired up, no question there. I'm (trying to)install Proxy Server 2.0 on NT4 Server (to which I added service pack 4 & Option Pack 4). The server has two NIC's, one to the LAN and one to the WAN. The hardware (router, hub, cables) works, that's for sure. I got my DNS addresses all written out, both NIC's configured, no WINS server, backlog of addresses entered from 192.168.1.100 to 254... The Internet connection does work, the DHCP is in the router, the NIC on the inside gets its IP adress no problem upon booting, the other one I assigned one to it... I don't get it, and this is just not getting done.
Thank you

A:Proxy server can't access internet

What is the error message when you try to ping a site on the WAN? Are the DNS servers internal or external, and, if external, can you ping them by numeric address? Can you run a traceroute anywhere? Can you ping the addie of the NIC-WAN card? It sounds like you may well have tried these, but it certainly helps for us to know what you have and haven't done so we can help ya. Let us know!

I've also ran malware bytes but that didnt fix the problem either.

Description of Systems:
Two independent family companies, each with their own LAN, FILE SERVERS and WIN98 Workstations, each operating independently and successfully using different workgroup names. One company is using WIN2000 Server and the other WIN2000 Pro on the file server and all workstations use WIN98. Both FILE SERVERS are using NTSF file system on the partitioned drive for the files being shared. Everybody has DSL. I am wanting to be able to work from my home and access the files, via the internet, on each file server.

Observations:
- I am able to intermittently map to the “WIN2000 Server” fileserver using a WIN98 workstation via the internet.
- I am able to consistantly map to the “WIN2000 Server” fileserver using a “WIN2000 Server” workstation via the internet.
- I am unable to map to the “WIN2000 PRO” fileserver, using a WIN98 workstation via the internet.
- I am able to map to one of the WIN98 workstations on the WIN2000 PRO network.
- I am able to ping the “WIN2000 PRO” fileserver but unable to map to the file I need.
- In all cases I am able to ping and/or connect, using PCAnywhere, to any and all servers and workstations from my workstation at home via the internet.

Please help!!!

A:Remote access to file server via the internet

Make sure that NetBIOS is bound to your network card on the server/PC you are trying to connect to. Big security risk doing this though...anyone can access your files!! If you have a firewall open to the proper ports with letting static IP's in thru them then you should be fine.

Hello! I am my company's Network Administrator, but I am not very familiar with Proxy-Server (Microsoft, V1.1) which we use as a "firewall". I've been fooling around with it a bit, but here is all I want to do:
I (the admin) would like full Internet Access. We don't block sites or IP's, but I can't connect to things like (here's an example) http://www.exite.com/games )
I can connect, but when the java applet attempts to load, it says it cannot connect.

Same for applications like Napster, or other programs like that where you have to get a connection to the internet to run it.

(Now, don't think I sit around playing games at work and downloading stuff- I need to do some on-line classes for my accounting software and the same thing keeps happening, but I thought I would use a familiar example or two.)

I am using Microsoft Proxy Server V 1.1 on an NT server and a Windows 98 client machine. I connect through a proxy server setting (company name, port 80). I am using a cable modem, which is run directly into the server.
I tried going into the security settings and granting myself full permission, but it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas??

Suzette

Hi Everyone
I am new to networking. We have a Win 2003 Server, single NIC,running a database, with 10 workstations joined under a domain. All are connected by a switch. Our internet router died and I bought a Netgear 300 that accesses the net thru a ubee modem. The Netgear is ethernet connected to the switch also. Server has DCHP disabled and router is DCHP enabled.
Problem: I can connect any of the workstations to the net with an automatic TCP/IP setting, and they will still be able to use the database. I can connect the server the same way, but if I do so, the workstations cant access the Database on the LAN anymore. If I return the NIC tcp/ip to static add for the server, it works but cant see the internet.

I know most servers have two NIC's and that it's fairly simple to set one up for the internet, one for the LAN.

Can anyone direct me to an article/answer that will educate me re: this dilemma? Have searched all over net, with lots of info but none specifically addressing this question.

A:Internet access but no web browsing on windows server

The default browser security on Windows server can be paranoid at times. This must be to minimise chances of system intrusion by a malware of some sort while browsing the Internet.

However, you could try and verify if your server can talk to outside hosts using the ping command.
Open up the commandline and run
ping google.com

If there is a response, then your computer is able to access the Internet and this may be a problem with a firewall or browser security.

I've have two laptops sitting side by side. This one connects to the internet but the other one doesn't and is giving an error "Can't connect to DNS server." The laptop that is not connecting to the web was reformatted this morning due to a virus or malware that my crappy antivirus and spyware tools failed to stop forcing me to reformat. Now after the reformat the laptop won't connect to the web. I tried updating device drivers for Atheros network card but still no luck. Below are my details from IP config:

I have no access to my wireless router as it is owned by my landlord so resetting it or doing anything with it is not a solution. I also have no access to an ethernet cable or port:

have given issues in the past,
I would suggest getting the latest driver from the manufacturers website
OR
AR5007
Vista 32 / 64 Bit
Direct link Drivers for Atheros AR5007 and Windows Vista 32 / 64 bit
You only need to click on the green download button labelled " Click to Download " and wait, the file will download - you do not need to click on any other buttons to get the download started
http://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-drivers.php
You need to look down the page for your particular adapter model and then look across the columns to find your windows version.
Now click on the blue tick mark in the column under your windows version.
This will open another page for that particular adapter and that windows version.

Now click on the download button labelled " Click to Download " and wait, the file will download - you do not need to click on any other buttons to get the download started

Assuming that after all the above the wireless still does not connect to the internet, all I can suggest is to use wireless security of WEP or to get an external USB wireless card.

Please post a reply here , and keep us informed of the situation and how you finally resolved the issue.

To install the driver you will need to do the following

Extract the downloaded zip file into a folder on the PC
then

Good afternoon all,

After trawling Google for solutions I'm not sure what to do.

Brand new comp running Windows 7 and using a wireless network adapter. The network signal is saying I'm connected and that there is internet access, but there is not. I've tried a different browser and nothing. Then an exclamation point pops up saying there is no internet access. I've troubleshooted using Windows and its getting the "DNS server is not responding" error. The internet was fine and then did a Windows update.

I've tried cmd release, flush, renew to no avail. I've changed the DNS address to 208-67-222-222. Uninstalled the wireless adapter, restarted and reinstalled. Unplugged the modem and router and then reconnected.

Sometimes internet access will be restored, but minutes later the DNS server pops up again.

I did a system restore to before the updates as a last ditch effort.

Thank you in advance!

My fiancee downloaded some free software and really bogged down her Windows 7 machine. Pastaquotes is the one really sticking out in my head. I ran the unistaller for all new programs via windows control panel. Ever since IE and Google Chrome will not allow me to uncheck using a proxy server option. I've attempted to restore to factory defaults for each browser and that did not work.  Firefox will allow the proxy to be shutdown and allow internet access. I've run malwarebytes, I've run rkill, I've run emisoft. I've run other programs to help this to no avail. How do I fix this if possible.
Thanks

Hello, I've done some searches in the forums and tried a few fixes posted for similar issues but had no luck. BackgroundI am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I recently installed some free software which of course came with some adware, changed my browser settings (home page, default search engines.) After some work I was able to remove them, but now have encountered a new problem which I expect is also malware related. ProblemWhen I direct my browsers to any website I get a message saying that there is no response from the proxy server. I have never used a proxy server for internet access and when I go into my Internet Properties>LAN Settings and un-check "Use a proxy Server for your LAN" and check "Automatically detect settings" the settings are not remembered and revert as soon as I close and re-open "LAN Settings" rendering my browsers useless. Things I've TriedScans withMalwarebytes antimalwareMicrosoft security essentialsSpybot Search and DestroyCCleaner (cleaner and registry)Using regedit to manually delete suspicious registry keysThe FRST fixlist hereThe OTL fix hereAny help you can offer if appreciated. My laptop is running Vista SP2. The machine will connect to my Belkin router with a wired connection but I have a problem setting up a wireless connection. The machine can successfully obtain an IP address from the DHCP server but it is unable to get a ping response from the gateway address or anything else on the LAN (and yes, other devices on the LAN can ping the gateway 192.168.2.1). I have tried stopping the Base Filtering Engine, running 'netsh winsock reset' and applying the fix in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233 but none of these has resolved the problem.

In the 'Network and Sharing Center' window, the machine is shown as being connected to 'Unidentified network', but there is a red 'X' against the onward connection to the internet. Initially, I had the same problem with the wired connection but running 'netsh winsock reset' in the command window triggered it into creating a new network location the next time it connected and then it worked happily. Unfortunately, I have not been able to repeat this with the wireless connection.

The network adapter is an Atheros AR5007EG with driver version 7.3.1.109 and the status show that is working properly. For information I have shown below the output from the command ipconfig /all:

Welcome to TSG.
We have seen quite a few issues with that adapter.
Here is a summary of things to try:

Atheros AR5007EG & AR5007
We have recently been seeing a lot of problems with the above adapters over the last few months, mainly concerning WPA and WPA2 encryption and windows Vista.

The adapter gets an IP configuration, and shows as connected, but communication is non-existent or sporadic.

Log into the Router and disable the wireless security and see if you are now able to connect to the internet and surf OK.
--- Please post back here if that works or does not work.

Here are a number of possible solutions

--- 1) In Device Manager right click on the wireless adapter and "update driver." That apparently has worked for some posters.

--- 2) Download and install the latest wireless driver from your laptop manufacturer's web site support section, as some manufactures, appear to now have a working driver available.
Toshiba - update has worked for some PCs
HP The latest HP Atheros driver dated Sept 2010 has fixed the issue - so check the driver date, However, that does NOT apply to all HPs / Compaqs machines
- the poster did an online scan for driver updates on the HP website here HP Product Detection which resulted in a solution. Solved: Can't connect to internet wirelessly - Atheros AR5007 Wifi through Clear Comm - Te... Read more

Hello,

I am trying to configure Remote Desktop Access to work over the internet.
Remote Desktop Access works on my local network.

Both of my computers are on Windows 7 Professionnal. My router is a Belkin F9K1002.

I followed the official widows tutorial. I forwarded the necessary port on my router (I switched from port 3389 to 50000, in case 3389 was blocked by my isp).

Every time I try to connect I get

"Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:
1)Remote access to the server is not enabled
2)The remote computer is turned off
1)The remote computer is not available on the network
Make sure the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled."

Any ideas as to where the problem could be coming from?

Hi there
Why does Windows Networking always seem to hose things up ( Linux works EVERY time)

I have two computers on the SAME test private LAN one Whitehorse (W2003 server) and the other Blackdog (W8 Enterprise) both enabled "Shareable and Visible".

View from W2003 -- can see and access disks C,D, and F on W8 Computer

View from W8 - Networking shows the computer Whitehorse (W2003 server) but can't access any disks etc (or even its printer). PING even fails but W8 obviously knows it's on the Network because its found it. The stupid Windows diagnostics when you click Diagnose doesn't help at all --in fact I've NEVER found the network diagnostic panel of the slightest bit of help ever.

I've switched off firewalls etc while testing so there's no security rubbish to take care of while I'm trying to get this to work. LAN is purely LOCAL -- no computer is on "the other side" of a router.

Both machines can access independently the Internet through a Local router and connections are via LAN cable so nothing should be simpler. !! But can I get this to work !!.

I had a similar problem with W7 but it seemed to "Disappear" without me actually doing anything -- the proverbial "Ghost in the Machine" I expect.

Assuming this Windows 8 Enterprise machine isn't locked down with Group Policy.

This type of problem usually requires that you change the lanman server parameters in order to get Windows 8 working with older servers. Do these adjustments on the Windows 8 machines that needs to connect to the server.

Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy

Local Policies - Security Options

Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Set to Send LM & NTLM responses only

Set the Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
Disable Require 128-bit encryption

Reboot all machines after making the adjustment.

There are two separate settings for disabling the 128 bit encryption.

Hiya
This is a spoofing vulnerability that exists in the affected products and that could enable an attacker to spoof trusted Internet content. Users could believe they are accessing trusted Internet content when in reality they are accessing malicious Internet content, for example a malicious Web site. However, an attacker would first have to persuade a user to visit the attacker’s site to attempt to exploit this vulnerability.
Affected Software:

• Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 Service Pack 1
• Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 Service Pack 1 and Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 Service Pack 2

Note The following software programs include Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 (ISA Server 2000). Customers using these software programs should install the provided ISA Server 2000 security update.

We run a web proxy server on our network for internet access.
On client machines (running Windows 2012 R2) I have configured the proxy server setting in Internet Explorer "Tools\Internet Settings\Connections\LAN Settings" to point at the designated web proxy server.
When attempting to browse websites from IE I receive the "The proxy server isn't responding" error.
Conversely, browsing the same sites via Google Chrome and Firefox (installed on the same client server) return web pages without error.
In addition, if I run Internet Explorer as administrator (Right Click\Run as Administrator), I am able to browse web sites without receiving the error.
It would appear that the issue is isolated to browsing via IE when not run in elevated mode.
Has anyone come across this issue?

A:Server 2012 R2 - Internet Explorer Proxy Server Issue

Hi Dicki,
First, please try to reset the Internet Explorer. Some plug-ins may affect the proxy.
If it doesn't work, please try to perform a network capture on the client.
Please check if the client send the http traffic to the proxy server at the correct port.
If the client has sent the http traffic to the proxy server, please check if there is any warning or error in the proxy server.

A friend is moving his business, and the new business park that he's setting up shop in does not have anyway to get any wired internet to his building, excluding a T1 line, which he can't justify the cost of.

One windows 7 machine acts as the server, primarily for Quickbooks database, and there are two other windows 7 machines that are clients, reading off said database.

He's getting one of those usb dongles for wireless internet service, for the server only (the other two computers will be tethered to a smartphone for internet for QB and windows updates periodically).

They do NOT want to share the servers wireless connection to the other machines.

My only concern was if the server will continue to try to check the LAN for internet connectivity, or will it check both network connections when one fails, or is there a setting I can tell them to change to ensure it knows to go to the wireless dongle for internet all the time, without interfering with the workstations talking to the server over the LAN to get to the database?

The setup at the old office was business class DSL, they are using a relatively new Linksys router, which had the DSL authentication information.

Thank you!

But the short answer is, under the advanced properties of TCP/IP v4, uncheck automatic metric, set your internet to a value of 1, and the LAN to a value of 9999.

My husband and I have several email addresses for our business that were created and hosted by another party using cPanel. Unfortunately we are late in paying our bill and our emails addresses have been shut down. Is there any way to redirect them? Any other advice? We did have access to the cPanel account but looks that was access was changed too. (see attached) If I am able to obtain access again, can I transfer the email addresses somehow?

A:Can I Access Emails If My Server Access Has Been Shut Down?

what was the last part after the @ of the email
why not just pay the bill ?
if ita a domain youu own , then you can transfer to a new provider and they can also host your email - but there will be a hosting / email server charge for you on another host.

Assuming this is all via a domain name, what is your domain name ?
when does the domain name expire?

Who are you hosting with now - is it very expensive?
What country are you in

You will NOT be able to transfer the email address and all the OLD emails , just the email address may be transfered - the emails will stay on the current hosting server , and if you leave it to long , which you may have already done, they will delete all the emails anyway

But after some configuring for the VPN adapter (separate adapter) I can't connect to \\server (that's server real name) anymore.

So I thought that the VPN adapter is conflicting with some settings and disabled it, and it didn't help.

I can ping the server.

What's the problem?

Hello,

I have a problem to access file server on Windows Server 2000 from a Windows 7 PC. For your information, due to some reasons, both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2000 are in different domain.

I have tried all suggested solutions which are :
i. to unchecked both attributes in 'Network Security : Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC)' for both clients and server.
ii. to apply 'Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated' in 'Network Security : LAN Manager authentication level'
iii. to make sure the time setting for both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2000 are the same.

But still, i couldn't access the file server. In fact, each time I entered domain\username to authenticate, it will give out this message :

Since I am kinda new to this troubleshooting things, it would be great if someone can tell me why does this happening. Is it because of the different domain?

thanks in advance.

A:Windows 7 unable to Access file server on Windows Server 2000

To connect to the server you would need to enter the credentials of the domain user on the server that would have access. For example if the domain was 'home' with a user 'Josh' then I would put:

home\Josh

As the username. If you want to get advanced you could try and form a trust with the other domain in active directory so that the other domain has permission to access the server

I use Windows 7 professional, when I start it up and log in, either my network connection will say "no internet connection" and display two networks using the same adapter/connection or "internet access" with the same display. In either case I do not, in fact, have internet access. I checked the adapter this last time and it said IPv6 was disabled, I went into the settings and verified that it was lying to me about that, too because IPv6 was, in fact, enabled. Every ping in command prompt times out, no browser will load so much as google.com. Nothing internet related works, at all. I open the troubleshooter and it says it "verified" that I am able to access some websites and could not detect a problem. Even when its own display says "no internet access." For a while I was running ComboFix every time I booted up because that seemed to fix it for that session. Then I discovered that simply disabling and then enabling the adapter fixes it for that particular session as well and that was probably why combofix worked. I know it's not the hardware because it works flawlessly in safemode and on my linux partition, and I know it's not my internet because the other two computers and my phone all connect and work flawlessly on the same connection. After that I can access to internet for 30-60sec and then it shows there is no internet access. And suddenly it comes after 20-30 mins and again remaining for 30-60sec it drops again. I have reinstalled windows 7 two times and installed windows 8 for finding some hope but it didn't work. In ubuntu it is working fine for hours without any problem. So I think it is not hardware or network problem. I searched many online forums and tried to solve the problem but nothing helped. I also downloaded the latest version of my LAN driver and installed that(Intel Gigabit Ethernet Controller driver for Windows 7). So friends can you please suggest me what is going wrong with my pc, I am totally clueless at this case. My Mother board is intel DH61WW and my processor is intel core i3 2100. No graphics card is installed. Hope for your help and would really appreciate it if anyone had any helpful advice for my problem.

Hi,

Like the title says For some reason I now only have ivp4 internet access and NO ivp6 internet access.

Dont know why, as had both connected previously with the internet working, albeit much slower than I know it should be, perhaps less than 200kbps. This is with an excellent broadband signal.

Ive tried the command prompt ivp4/ivp6 ntsh reset thingy and winsock reset to no avail.

Im stumped.

If you know wwhat my problem is and you would help fix it Id be very grateful!!!.

Thanks.
Tom.
