Windows wont load, Boot CD wont load, Automatic Repair Loop

Q: Windows wont load, Boot CD wont load, Automatic Repair Loop

Backstory (skip if you need)
I'm fixing someones laptop, It was slow and taking 30 minutes to startup, i did the usually virus scan and restarted, then it was stuck in an auto repair loop. I used a windows 8 Install CD from microscoft. None of the options in it would work, install (key doesnt match) reset (missing partition), image recovery (cant find an image), restore (no restore point), etc.

Used command prompt, did stuff like bootrec, bcdedit, diskpart, and chkdsk. After it ran chkdsk it finally loaded windows. I reset/reinstalled the OS completely. Fixed, restarted, running smooth. Owner said it was working great for a day, then after turning it back on it was in an auto repair loop.

Now
It's stuck in a preair loop, I can't even boot from the 8 CD! Have it configured in the bios, it shows the the blue windows logo then the screen goes black for 3 minutes and a blue screen flashes for 1 second saying  "Your PC ran into a problem and need to restart. Collecting some info (0% complete) search online for error: 0x000021a"

The weird thing is, Windows 7 disks boot fine, but it's "not compatible". And if I physically remove the HDD, it will boot into the windows 8 CD. So I put the HDD back in (while still at the command prompt) and it wont take my commands in related to the C: . I get a "System cannot find the drive specified"

I also tried hooking upp the HDD to my PC SATA, it shows in explorer, but just right clicking it crashes explorer.exe. Drivers for it fail to update.

Any idea what is going on? How can I get it to boot from the CD, or get  the command prompt to find C drive, or start up when booting with the HDD in the laptop???

Specs: windows 8, core i5, 8gb ram, 1TB HDD, 1.5 Years old, no important files.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

UPDATE:

I got a windows 8.1 disk made and it allowed me yo boot from the CD, but it's SLOOOOW, it takes minutes to load reset or w.e (none of them still work), or open the command prompt.

I ran chkdsk /f /r /x but it didnt help. chkdsk /r ends with:
"A disk read error occurredcc0000185
Insufficient disk space to fix the Usn Journal $J data stream."

Before when I ran it, I'm pretty sure it let me restart and booted into windows, not now.

Next I tried bootrec.
/fixmbr - succesful
/fixboot - succesfull
/rebuildBCD - Total identified Windows installations: 0
/scanOS - Total identified Windows installations: 0

Next bcdedit
Nothing worked "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The requested system device cannot be found."

Next sfc /scannow
"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."
Then sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=c:\ /OFFWINDIR=d:\Windows
"Windows resources protection didnt find integrity violations"

BCDBoot c:\WindowsFailure when attempting to copy boot files

Next diskpart - but I forgot what I did before that may have worked. All i can remember is I had to select a disk or volume, and do something with it.

Hello there,

It seems like you did not perform a clean installation of Windows and that's why your system is acting up.

Follow the steps below to install a new copy of Windows:

1. To format your hard disk during Windows 7 installation you will need to start or boot your computer using the Windows 7 installation disc or USB flash drive. Insert your Windows 7 disc in your CD/DVD drive. Please note: will need to restart or turn on your system with the disc in the drive.
2. After turning on your system with the CD in the drive go ahead and press any key when prompted during your computer post routine and then follow the instructions presented on screen. If you don’t see this go back to step 1 to setup your BIOS to boot from CD or USB flash drive depending on your installation media.
3. On the Install Windows page simply enter your preferences and click next.

4. Accept the Windows license agreement.

5. On the “Which type of installation do you want” page go ahead and choose the “Custom” option.

6. Select Drive options (advanced) on the “Where do you want to install Windows” page.

7.  Select the partition that you want to change, choose the formatting option you want to perform and then follow the instructions.
When allocating space choosing the default MB size for your drive is typically the best for most users since you want to take full advantage of all your disk... Read more

I am having this issue where my laptop with windows 8 just won't boot. I see my acer splash screen, then I see a blinking _ then it goes blank for around 20 min, and then it would say "automatic repair, diagnosing" I've waited nearly 20 hours, almost an entire day leaving my computer on, just still no use.

I am having a very very similar problem as this guy, (as well as many others who pretty much lost all their valuable datas in their HDD after installing WIN 8)
:

Windows 8 Woes

The person who wrote that was actually in RTM version, but the problem still persists in the most updated Final build version as of last week. I am quite disappointed in Microsoft. I am currently on my friend's mac.
I have my windows 8 original copy bootable on my usb drive. Insterting my usb drive, it boots and all, and I went into the repair option. I tried all of the repair options, all of them would either stuck in their screen or say that my disk is read only and locked.

I do have access to the cmd though in that repair mode, but it seems to be quite limited.

I tried to enter safe mode by pressing shift+F8, it doesn't work!!! Tried it so many times, just doesn't work.
It gives a loud beeping sound if I hold it for more than 2 sec.

EDIT:
I am now successfully able to boot Ubuntu from my Portable Hard Drive and it runs smooth and really well.

I originally had 2 partitions, C and D. C is where my windows 8 was installed, so it's unaccessable now, it doesn't appear in the ... Read more

I dont know if this is posted in the right area but I'm so desperate to get my laptop working its unreal.
First it started off with my laptop crashing, I had totally forgot it needed to do a windows update and turned off my laptop in hopes that it would work properly.
After that my laptop has not been working. The machine turns on and gives me two options. Start windows normally or do a repair. Upon starting windows normally, it loads so far before sending me back to the two options of start windows normally or repair. On the second time I clicked repair. My laptop then goes so far before presenting me with a blue screen that is usually the screen where my accounts are. The cursor still moves but it loads no further even after leaving it an hour. I decided to make a repair disk, hoping that the problem was because of windows. the disk loads, gives me a choice on the keyboard language then does nothing. I honestly have no idea what to do, I want to keep all the files safe on my computer as I havent backed them up and I have worked so hard on the projects. someone please help

A:windows 7 refuses to load and system repair wont load

Do a hardware/software reset with your BIOS:Shut down and turn off the computer.
Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
"Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station, disconnect
cables to printers or devices such as external monitors, USB memory sticks or SD cards, headset or external speakers, mouse or auxiliary keyboard, turn off WIFI and Bluetooth wireless devices." (Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English))
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
(If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware

After doing those steps, clear your CMOS by entering the BIOS (see your system manual for steps to enter the BIOS), going to the EXIT screen, and loading setup/optimized defaults.

Might be a failing Hard drive. Get to your bios and see if there is any diagnostics there to do a hard drive test. On some motherboards its delete on others its F2. If there is no diagnostics on the bios i would make a USB bootable diagnostics and do that.
I just had the same problems and found out the hard way that it was a hard drive.

Ok, heres what happened:

Vista got stuck on the loading splash screen with the green bar moving along the bottom. Left it for 15 minutes & didnt budge.
Reset the PC & tried again - same thing.

So, I booted of a recovery disk & ran CHKDSK /R.

Now, Vista didnt boot at all & i just got the message:

So, I booted from a Vista disk (Ultimate)

Clicked next anyway & got to the repair menu.
Select 'Startup Repair' & it went off on its merry way for about 3 minutes but then reported back that there wasnt any operating system to repair.

So, went back to the repair menu & went opened up the Command Prompt.

I haven't installed anything lately and I can only think that it was maybe due to shutting down the computer directly from the power button (heard sudden shut downs could cause problems).

I tried startup repair, I tried doing a "refresh" but it won't accept the cd, I tried doing a safe mode boot and a debug boot, I tried changing the sata cords on my drive, I tried doing a system restore to 3 different points and they all give me the same error "System Restore did not complete successfully, System restore failed while scanning the file system on the drive E:\" (I find this strange since there is no drive E: on my computer, maybe this is the problem).
Can anyone help me out? I've run out of options. I've only installed 8.1 on this 120gb 840 evo 2 months ago. I really can't just reinstall 8.1 and erase everything, I have to figure out a way around this if anyone knows?

Hi.
I accidentally removed a usb cable from a powered usb hub , and a volume slider of some other program appeared superimposed and floating above my music making program , so I restarted the pc.
From then on , it wouldnt start , and kept saying preparing automatic repair, then reached 40% and wouldnt go any further.

I unplugged my 2 external drives because they werent showing in the bios , and plugged them into my laptop to check they were ok , and im relieved to say they are.

Since i removed the drives , my desktop ( asus ) will eventually arrive at the blue recovery screen , but all these things that are supposed to help fix it , arent working.

When I try to refresh , it says the drive where windows is installed is locked
Ive tried to do a system restore from 3 different restore points and none of them have worked ( one actually cited a mozilla profile as being the cause )
Re-image wont work because it cant find the image file , which is on one of my external drives which are now unplugged.

It also will not boot into safe mode.

Ive tried cd%windir%\system32\config , but it says " the drive , the path, or the filname is not valid"

Also when i go to click on like my internet it dont work, not even my games work, they try to load then freeze. So i did a scan on it and its still having this problem. After i got frustrated i went to shut it down again and it says "logging off" but stays like that for hours, so i have to manualy turn it off. I just had to chime in here.  I just spent the last 5 days fighting this with a Lenovo U530 Ultrabook Ideapad. I could not even get the machine to boot to a bootable Windows 10 USB stick or a bootable Windows PE USB that had some drive recovery software on it.  Although it would boot to the Lenovo Diagnostics that I downloaded from Lenovo on a USB stick and it would also boot to Tails (Linux distro) on a USB stick. I know the machine was crashing because when it would get stuck, I would try to push the Caps Lock on and off and the light didn't change.  During boot kept pushing the Caps Lock it would toggle then freeze after a few seconds. I took the hard drive out and put it in another Lenovo U530 I had at my disposal and it worked fine so I know that the hard drive was working.  The hard drive seemed to be in  some state of a patial update to Windows 10 so that probably caused the initial problem. I was trying to figure out how to flash the BIOS since I though maybe it had been corrupted somehow but wasn't figuring out how to get that done without being in Windows.  The BIOS flash from Lenovo seemed to be dependent on some .NET framework.  Anyway I ran across a video where a guy explained that he had a Lenovo that was acting similar so he opened it up and unplugged the battery and plugged it back in and it fixed it. I was skeptical but figured I hadn't anything to lose and voila it worked.... unbeivable... Here... Quick summary: SATA Controllers on motherboard are not working. Ordered and installed a PCI-E SATA Controller Card. Connected Hard Drive & DVD Drive to new card ports. Upon attempting to boot installed windows 7, it spontaneously restarts before loading. It seems that I need to get the Controller Card's drivers installed. i try startup repair mode, and I can load the driver and see the Windows 7 installation after that, but then I don't know how to permanantly add the drivers for this installation.

Any help? Or do I need to reformat and re-install? Thanks

A:New SATA Controller Card, Windows wont boot, how to load drivers?

Win7 should not need SATA drivers as it has most of them. There is likely another issue.

Is HD set to boot after DVD drive in BIOS?

Is Startup Repair autostarting from the HD, or are you booting DVD to access Repair console on second screen? If not, try that to run Startup Repair a few times, making sure Win7 or its 100mb boot partition (preferred) are marked Active: Partition - Mark as Active (Method Two) .

If it's autostarting from HD then the change in SATA controller may be too much for your extant Win7 to start. This requires running Paragon Adaptive Restore CD on the installation from boot, or clean Reinstalling Windows 7.

My laptop is in a constant auto repair loop, I have tried just about every troubleshoot I've found via google and youtube, defaulting the bios doesn't working, the 'hold power button for 10,15, 30,60 secs' doesn't work. I dont have a windows boot disk as my laptop didn't come with one. I cannot get to the option to do a system restore, I can;t afford to get a windows boot disk and I don't have anyway of putting it on a usb and booting from there. I don't know what else to do as no forums are helpful for my problem.

Since upgrading to windows 8/8.1 x64 i have twice had this situation when during boot up windows tries automatic repair & fails , every time i restart same repair fail happens , its stuck in this cycle , neither "Refresh" or "Reset" option works , . I have to do a fresh format & install , loose all my files stored in the OS partition , I even tried to recover the files using linux boot cd but the folders were inaccessible/corrupted .

I tried every solution i could find to make it boot including Unable to refresh or reset PC after Automatic Repair fails in Windows 8 but nothing worked .

This has happened twice in the one year since i have been using Win 8 , Is there any way to avoid this from happening i future ?

A:How to avoid Windows 8.1 Automatic repair boot loop ?

This video claims to demonstrate how to escape the loop.

Also read comments. One claims rebooting with no USB devices connected broke out of the loop. I see lots of complaints on MS but I didn't see a fix.

Hello,

I have a compaq presario with vista basic that won't load. When starting it dosen't find the boot record and asks for a boot record.  I have tried recovery with no luck.  I have dismounted the c: drive and ran virus scan and chkdsk from another computer and nothing found.  This started with the desktop not turning on. I thought I had a bad power supply, but after resetting cmos by removing the battery and then reseating the memory stick the power returned.

One other symptom after running chkdsk I tried to change the drive with the cd command and it won't access the drive

Hope you can help

Thank you.

A:vista boot record wont load

Boot your Vista recovery disc and Choose Repair then once on System Recovery Option, choose command prompt. In cmd prompt type
bootrec /fixmbr <- Note the space after bootrec. Enter

This should be done while the hard drive is connected to the compaq computer itself.

So i installed vista (and it was very slow because of AHCI mode or whatever) and at the last step it was going very slow and lagging
We restarted the computer and now i get the message
"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "Ok" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation."
I built my own comp and pretty sure all the parts are compatible and compat with vista and windows 7
So ive tried various vista recoveries and programs to wipe my hard drive but none of them actually ever boot
When im stuck at the screen with the error message i can open the cmd box

A:Vista wont load or boot disc

When you say that they wont boot. Are you referring to the HDD tools or the
Windows disk.

Acer Aspire V5 is the PC I am using. I turn it on, the boot fails and the pc restarts. Then begins an automatic repair, which crashes and the PC turns off. It is a loop I cannot get out of. How do I fix this?

I don't have a Windows 8 Disc or anything like that.

A:Windows 8.1, failed boot, preparing automatic repair loop

You will have to reinstall windows. On the Acer at boot press Alt + F10 to access the recovery process. If unable you may have to order the recovery disks from Acer. I hope you had you data backed up

Hello,

I'm having problems with my windows 8 laptop.
This afternoon I shut it down, and went to work. A few hours later when I came back home I noticed the little blue lights on the keyboard (showing me that the pc was charging and that my wifi is on) were still on. Normally these are off when the pc is turned off.

I tried starting the laptop but nothing happened, the screen stayed black. I held down the 'on' button to force it to turn off, and turned it on again.
I then got a textmessage on the startup loading screen that there were problems with my C drive (only drive the laptop has), so it went to automatic repair.

*my laptop's language is set to Dutch so I'm translating everything *

It gave me 2 options:
1: Restart computer
2: Advanced options.

I tried option 1, didnt work ofcourse, it just restarted and I got back to this screen, so I checked what option 2 had to offer.

I got to a screen with 3 options:
1: Continue to windows 8
2: Solve Problems
3: Shut down

When I tried option 1 the computer just restarted and went back to the same screen.
When I tried option 3 it shut down as it should.

Option 2 gave me 3 other options:

1: Renew PC
2: Factory reset
3: advanced options

Option 1 just restarted my pc and took me back to screen 1.
Option 2 I havent tried yet, because it erases all of my files. This is a last resort.
Option 3 gave me 6 other options:

1: Systemrepair
2: Repair with installationcopy
3: Startuprepair
4: CMD
5: UEFI firmware settings
6. Startupsett... Read more

I have tried searching for this in the forums but I cant seem to find an answer.
So I figured Id post it.

Im running into a very strange situation.

Im running 7 Ultimate on a Lenovo 3000 N100 Laptop that I use for work.

Originally I had the RTM that i revieved from work (HP). Once 7 was released to the public I purchased the Ultimate anytime Upgrade to make my copy of 7 my own.
Here is my issue, With the RTM installed I had no problems. But once I entered my new key I started having boot problems.
Every other boot, when I get to the login screen It seem that my graphics driver and my touchpad driver did not load and I must shut down and reboot.
when I reboot it then works fine.

i have done a Fresh Install 3 times,
Downloaded updated drivers for my chipset, graphics, and touchpad.
Could it be a BioS issue?

I was wondering if anybody has ever encountered this or knows how to remedy this.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Video and touchpad drivers Wont load every other boot

**UPDATE**

I found a Bios update, but when I flashed The graphics/touchpad issues were done and gone.

But now I have no sound.. found and installed updated Realtek driver, but still NO sound!!!

I rolled back my bios flash to the previous bios because I cant deal without sound.

I find it kind of disturbing, that 41 views and not one response...

Our family computer is randomly having trouble connecting to the internet when loading some web pages or web pages wont load. I occasionally have the same problem with my laptop but never at the same time. Which leads me to believe it is not likely my router. Would that be correct? My wife plays alot of games from Yahoo Games. Could that be a source of some of the problems?

I have some of the tools I believe will be needed to clean the system loaded to my desktop ready to go. I need some direction to be sure I don't go out of order and cause a bigger problem.

Thank you

Do you have more then 1 computer connected to your modem/router? If so, does this happen on them? If not, can you connect a separate one (ex: friend's laptop) to test?

Normally when you get errors like this it's best to rule out a problem at the modem/router and provider before going crazy over trying to fix a problem (that may not exist) on your PC(s).

Also just a couple of other questions:

Who is your internet provider (ISP)?
What connection type do they use (Cable/DSL/Fiber/Fixed Wireless/Mobile Wireless)?
What is the make and model of your router and modem?

It appears that you have already posted a hijackthis log here. Please be patient while waiting for assistance. HJT Helpers are all volunteers regardless where you post a log. While waiting for a response, you should not ask for help elsewhere or make changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc.) Any modifications you make on your own can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, following advice outside of that post may cause confusion for the HJT Helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. If you had posted your log here, similar rules would apply. We would ask that you be patient while awaiting a reply and refrain from asking for help elsewhere. If you followed any other advice already, please ensure you inform the HJT Team Helper when they respond to assist you with your log. Any help with this problem would be great

A:Some Pages wont load at all and others load fine

Try running a ping to the sites that have trouble loading to see what kind of connection times you are looking at. I would also run a tracert to those sites to see if there are any places dropping the connection.

Hi, have just tried to do a clean install of windows 7 64 bit on my new PC. I have been into the bios to make sure it is set to boot from DVD, all good. I then insert the windows dvd, drawer closes, disk spins, I get to the "windows transfering files" bar at the bottom of the screen, all good. Then the "Starting windows" message appears (without the colourful swirl in the background, just words) and thats it!!! It seems to lock on that screen? My motherboard has a LED code AE - Legacy Boot Event? What does this mean and is this stopping windows from booting? Please any help is much appreciated!. Boot into Setup (Bios) What is the HDD mode set to? Is set to IDE or AHCI? Also set the Bios to Default. Also check again in Boot Priority again to make sure CD/DVD rom drive is First Boot Device. You may need to do a Bios Update.

When I go to turn it on it sounds like the hard drive attempts to spin. I don't hear the fans, but all the lights come on. The battery is fairly new and everything is plugged in properly.
All this began when I was running Macromedia Dreamweaver MX and it locked up forcing me to shut down.
Any ideas?
