I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

HP does not post Windows 8 drivers for that laptop just 7 and 10. Check device manager and see what is showing for display adapter. If it is Microsoft Basic brightness adjustment will not work. I suspect you need quite a few drivers for it which we are going to have to help you get from hardware manufacturer sites. Post back with identity of display adapter.

Hello,Having a problem with my laptop keyboard where the hotkey function buttons have suddenly stopped working as they used to. Pressing any of the hot keys results in an f1-12 rather than the previous function of changing volume, toggling keyboard lights and changing brightness etc. This happened around the time of me installing some new drivers for an audio interface so may be related to that. Ive tried going into the BIOS and toggling the hotkey option on and off, and installing hp quick launch software but nothing has worked so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance - C. I have a Dell Inspiron 5555 that I purchased today from the Microsoft Store.  The computer works great, but I've noticed that when I try to change the brightness using the brightness keys (F11 and F12) to adjust the brightness, they don't work.  I did get it to brighten up the screen once, but after doing that, I have been unable to make any changes.  Has anyone seen this and does anyone know something I can do or try to see if I can make these keys work?

A:Brightness Keys not working

The F keys toggle between Media and normal functions by using the FN key. Try using the FN key with the brightness F key--which is not necessarily F11 or F12. Check your manual. The sun symbols on the Function keys might tell you where the brightness settings are. On my model it is F3 & 4.

You can reverse the toggle settings to make the function you use most the default. The default doesn't use the FN key.

I seen all the past replies on fixing this problem. One even said HP enables the keys f1-f12 eventually. Even so, I brought this notebook just last Christmas '15.  Here's the rub,  Microsoft installed some updates recently, since then the f2 & f3 for bbrightness are the only f-keys enabled. Not all users are young, these keys are a must for seniors who are on computers and eyes aren't what they use to be. I even downloaded the driver again for this and still not workng. Should I take it back to store? Still under warrenty.

A:Brightness Function Keys( f2 and f3) NOT Working

Hi: The only suggestion I can offer would be to make sure you have installed the graphics driver...if the graphics driver is not installed, then you can't adjust the brightness.  it is stuck on maximum. This package provides the driver that enables the Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. If high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) video output is supported, this package also installs the HDMI Audio Driver. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72501-73000/sp72652.exe

A:Brightness Function Keys( f2 and f3) NOT Working

Hi, Well that does explain why your f2/f3 keys aren't working as you only have the basic Microsoft driver installed - if the Intel driver was previously installed Ok, this may indicate a hardware issue. What happens if you try to install the Intel HD 5500 driver directly from Intel - it's the 2nd file in the list on the following link. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/search?keyword=Intel%C2%AE+HD+Graphics+5500+for+5th+Generation+Intel%C2%AE+Core%E2%84%A2+Processors If this does install Ok, restart the notebook and let Windows fully load for a couple of minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

I have the strangest problem... When on battery (and only when on battery) my screen brightness keys (f2, f3) don't work. When I press them, the popup appears in the top left, but it won't move up or down with the keys. Using the touchscreen or a mouse I can drag it and it does indeed adjust the brightness. When plugged in to charge, the keys work as they would normally. I have tried disabling and enabling the "Generic PnP Monitor" device as well as reinstalling graphics and chipset drivers. I also tried changing the power profile and obviously restarting. Any ideas?

Hi,

I have the same problem: some of my function keys are not working.

My device is a HP zbook studio g3 with model number T7V83ES.

I did a clean install of 10 education since i could get that one for free and my previous version was enterprise. The keys worked on enterprise although I had some issues with it before only I forgot how to fix it. More people at my university that have the same laptop are experiencing the same problems, unfortunately this is not the case for everyone that owns the same laptop.

Here's what I did and what it resulted in:

-Installed every driver/program that seemed appropriate and was listed on the original  HP website for software and drivers for my device.
Result: My keys were not working at all. (brightness, project switch and mic mute keys)

-I asked google and tried every single solution I could find, including the ones you suggested.
Result: Mic mute key is working, project switch key is also working, and as if it was a miracle my brightness keys are also working! But: my brightness keys are stuttering like hell. It takes windows ages to register my keystroke and even longer to register another one directly following it; it can not register 2 keystrokes in a row, it needs a sort of cooling down time for the button.

This is a list of my installed drivers:

Hello, I have a HP Notebook PC - 15-r213ns (ENERGY STAR) with windows 8.1 Last night, after a windows update, the hotkeys for brightness (F2 and F3) the volume (F7 and F8), wifi (F12) and all the other ones have stopped working.  I can still change the brightness and volume through windows but i cant do it anymore using the keys. The functions keys do work, like F5 refresh or F3 browse. I have noticed that before i had to press the FN key for this and now it does it without the FN + Fx, so i suppose the windows update must have changed somthing here. They used to work fine before the update. I have re-installed the display drivers (NVIDIA G-FORCE 820-M) and looked for new drivers or updated drivers using HP Support asistant but everything is up to date. I was looking for hot key drivers in the HP drivers page for my product but couldnt find any keyboard, hotkeys related software or drivers. any suggestions? thanks in advance, Marco

Hi, I recently completely cleared my laptop and re-installed Windows 7 due to a virus. I am having issues with my brightness and volume control buttons on the keyboard. The brightness buttons do not work at all and there is no option to adjust the brightness via the power options either. My laptop is stuck on the highest setting. The volume buttons seem to adjust the volume appropriately, but the icon that typically appears in the middle of my screen when I do so is not there (the grey volume icon that appears when you use the f9 and f10 buttons and fades away shortly after). Additionally, the mute botton also seems to work but the red light on the f11 key does not respond accordingly, I only know it works from the volume icon on my taskbar.  I had some help from Paul Tikkanen in downloading several missing drivers for various other issues so I'm wondering if this is also a poblem that can be solved with a similar download? If not, is anyone able to suggest other solutions?  Thank you, Kristen

Hi, Try the following. Download the AMD HD Graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74716.exe When done, open your Downloads folder, right click the AMD Graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

I recently reset my PC after a virus infection, and as soon as I started working, I noticed that the fn brightness keys were not working. I was able to use all other fn keys, except for those related to brightness. I was able to change the brightness from the Windows Mobility Center, or from the Battery tab in the Taskbar. I read a few other forums telling me to update my drivers. I checked, and all my drivers were up to date. I uninstalled and re-installed my graphics drivers (Intel HD 4400) and notciced no change. I also tried to enable the Generic PnP Monitor, but found that it was already enabled. On other thread, I read that I should intall HP System Event Utility, and restart. I did so, and found that the fn keys were responding, but not ideally. There was a delay after pressing the keys. I had to wait about 5 seconds before the the brightness went up or down a level, and any other presses (on the fn keys) during that time  (the 5 seconds) were not taken into account. I would really love to be able to use my laptops the same way I could before the reset. Thank YouRegardsRandromeda
